AVGN has some of the best rewatch value on the internet. I tried to rewatch some Nostalgia Critic again, but I personally think that his videos have not aged as well. I got annoyed with him after just one video, and I used to watch him all the time. Nobody shits on James Rolfe when it comes to longevity and quality on youtube.
In a way, the nerd is actually the voice of reason in this video, taking it to the extreme, sure, but he also emphasizes how the whole game collection movement has become so bloated and absurd in some ways.

I really love the message the Nerd puts out at the very end when it shows him and Pat with their respective copies. Never let greed or jealousy get in the way of friendship.
There's also a great implied backstory here. That James actually bought this box and was so excited, he just had to call his friend so they could make a video together about it.
I love how The Nerd's fantasy was just him stariing at the new part of his collection. The true sign of a collector is caring more about the objects and the collection itself than the fame or the bragging rights of having a complete collection
It was confirmed in a BTS video that the cartridges destroyed were actually just Legend of Zelda and Top Gun carts in disguise, but wouldn't that be a great legacy? One of the most rare, elusive NES games in history, very few cartridges in existence, and the Angry Video Game Nerd would go down in history as the man who destroyed one of each kind. It would be quite poetic.

Despite him being in character as the Nerd, you could argue that this was where Rolfe realized there was a limit to game collecting. That's probably why he used the SNES Classic to review Earthbound. While the Earthbound cart isn't half as costly as NWC (gold OR grey), sometimes, the huge amount of money just ain't worth it sometimes.
I used to own Earthbound in SNES back in 2005 or something.. didn't know it was a big deal. game was awesome, but would kill-glitch in the same spot everytime

That's exactly why James has stayed relevant in the RUclips space, even after all of these years.
It's been 10 years punk, where's this table?
"Legend of zelda, legend of my ass"
I was just about to write that same line LOL
Legend of Link.
I DIED AT THAT xD
Arcade.Music Tribute me to lol
its a joke
How to get a gold cart.
step 1. Buy a nwc reproduction cartridge.
step 2. get a gold legend of zelda.
step 3. print out the nwc label.
step 4. glue the fucker on.
And there you have your cartridge with bragging rights.
But then it still plays The Legend of Zelda
Nihontendo yeah but replace the "Game chip" to the NWC repro!
I meant if you just want a replica
U know, I was thinking that, and then I saw ur comment.
You can also switch the inside of the reproduction cartridge and legend of Zelda, then cut out the top left side so you can fit the dip switches
This.....well.....this just changes everything. I thank you good sir or madam, for this brilliant idea. I will embark on the long and arduous project immediately.
Probably the best nerd episode in terms of story
matrix what about polybius
Nintendo relived the NWC around these days, thank you for bringing it up through your own days. You were so ahead of times.
Just want to stop by to this video and say NWC is now valued at just over $100,000. Wow
imagine if they actually broke it
Fuck yo couch!!!
i'm pretty sure anyone who's willing to pay that much for an NES game doesn't deserve to own the game.
Not even close. The grey cart is worth $10000 and the gold is worth $22000. Although to be fair that's still a crap ton of money.
the complete opposite bro. There are serious collectors who spend their whole lives looking for nintendo stuff. Thats how much its worth, and if someone wants it that bad and it means that much to them, so be it. Supply and demand
He freaking destroyed that cartridge. just like how Pat destroyed his own RUclips career.
Came here after the ReviewTechUSA video on him and Ian? So did I. I didn't even know much about Pat before, but I can't respect him or Ian after that fiasco.
Savage but deserved
Damn, people are more unapologetic than him
@@fawzanfawzi9993 that's what you get when you don't get the facts. And it sucks that they got the worst of it
Can someone explain to me what happened?
I really like this episode, I like how they really give you the insight on how precious these games are. The backstory and history is very important and film wise AVGN did a great job informing the viewer whom might not be so knowledgeable about NES (such as myself). So when the games broke I felt it too, but oh man what a ride - good thing they're safe and sound.
I love the nerd, many of his vids helped me through long bouts of depression.
that face at 8:45 is so authentic, I would absolutely be making the same face lol
A coffee table made out of Super Mario/Duck Hunt cartridges? I kinda like to see that.
I think about that everytime I think about that cartridge
this game store in my city that closed down used to have a bench made out of them out front
