I love hearing James telling stories, I could just listen to him talk for allday long. There's just something about his voice that is so calm and nice sounding.
Mike Matei has to be my favorite human ever. He's such an awesome friend. Every time James wants to get deep Mike (5:33) shifts positions to focus all his attention on James and pretty much says fuck the video let me listen to my best friend.
When I used to play this at my neighbor's house it always kind of weirded me out. I liked it, but the atmosphere gave me a strange feeling. I kind of miss that about being a kid, having things like games be able to put you into your own world like that.
odd... i remember feeling the same way when i played this as a kid..... i got it for my 12th birthday....it just had this kinda dreary, weird hue and atmosphere to it.
It's a very odd game for sure. When I was a kid it completely mystified me although I was able to make it decently far into the game. To this day it's still in my top 10 nes games
6:46 "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity..."
I loved Rygar. I had the game and still remember the levels and music. I enjoyed games like this where you had to explore to progress, similar to rpg but with more action and platforming. brings me back to the 80s watching this.
the best thing to do to beat Rygar is level up your guy all the way before even starting to explore. i used to set up a turbo controller with the down and attack buttons taped down. Then leave the NES on over night. With endless creature spawn your guy is maxed out next time you play. As long as no one messes with your setup while you are gone....
Absolutely fell in love with this game when I was seven. The text and story was so mystical and I felt like there was a huge adventure to embark on. Think the mystery of the game is super intriguing and wants you to keep playing
Checked this online. It's a known glitch and has been used in speed running to achieve the current glitch WR. Thought it was worth checking just in case I could nab it. :P
I'm surprised I haven't seen a comment about how great that "Rolling Rock Origin" story was that James and Mike told about back in college. It was told so well, It was like a good book. I was completely visualising everything he was saying. Definitely one of my favorite videos from you guys in a long time!
Rygar is the original God of War. The original Rygar arcade game existed even before God of War was popular. The main characters even have chains linked to their weapons! Will you ever play the Rygar remake on PS2, James and Mike? I remember that Rygar remake though.
BubbaSteve Well apart from the weapon and greek mythology it also had that 'cinematic camera angle' thing as well. I remember when GOW came on the scene people were saying the clear influence was DMC, but I was thinking it just seemed like a more brutal version of Rygar.
Shows how much of an alcoholic you are. Drink 5 beers and tell me you're not intoxicated and if you're not then go to AA cause you got deeper issues dude.
Mike and James really ought to watch more speedrun videos. Even without being a speedrunner, I've learned a ton of great strategies in games that way. Pretty funny to see them pull off a popular speed strategy by complete accident and not even realize it. :-)
Seriously, I cant imagine the odds of that. When I TRY to do that in my speedruns it takes me something like 5 tries a run to get it right.... while knowing how to do it. haha
I've always loved the NES version of Rygar. One of my top 10 fav adventure games for the console. Great music/gameplay/atmosphere. Once you figure out the RPG elements of the game it makes the game A LOT easier.
LOL You look like a viking, or a really tall dwarf ;D - but hey, looks can deceive and don't matter in the end, I get the feeling you're still a nice guy ;) One Up for nostalgia, man!
Mike, I used to play old games all my life, and I remember the reactions of my friends and brothers "are you STILL playing with this crap?" or "time to grow out of it!". I always liked things that stood the test of time, and apparently I was on the right track, but I can tell you, it's been a lonely way. No internet until 2006, no retro stores, only a few street markets once a month. The only outlet and common ground for this passion was the magazine Game Republic.
I remember people used to tell me the same things when i used to play the Gba remake of Final Fantasy 1 "they just attack the air" It was either GTA or PES for them
My parents owned a fish and chip shop in the 80s. Grew up on Rygar, Rastan Saga, Karnov, SlapFight, Pac man in pacland etc. Had Rygar on Atari Lynx as well. Awesome game.
Fuck yeah! It's quirky as hell, but still one of my favorite NES titles. It's my go-to when people ask about hidden-gems. Thanks for doing a Monday episode of it!
One of my all time favorite NES games. The music is so awesome! I had a hard time with it as a kid, but I went back to it as an adult and beat it in one sitting a few years ago.
I'm just here for the Sagila's Cave music, and of course the tangentially related stories these guys have come to their heads when they pick up an old game for these videos.
My cousin and I spent an entire weekend back in '93 perfecting our skills in this game. We loved the hell out of this game. It's all about the power ups and getting your weapon so strong and shoot so far across the screen you can one or two shot bosses with ease. Great game!
Another classic from you guys . Absolutely love you and your videos. I hear a lot of Rockin Cats nes sounds in this game . Oddly familiar. Keep up the great work gentlemen
Rolling Rock and Rygar... great fucking story James! Played this game for YEARS and could never progress further than after getting the grappling hook. Played it again in 2008 and FINALLY beat it.
James walks back to his dorm and the rain soaked bag breaks open and everything spills out and he's like" aw shit what a bag of crap" and the witty comments for shitty games was born from that day on. Also didn't even need to use game genie for the level select.
Alot of people dislike the arcade game because it's nothing like the NES but I still think it's good. Unlike Ninja Gaiden, arcade version of it not so good.
I gotta ask, was I the only one saying 'Just go back a bit, he'll disappear. You don't have to fight him.' when that tail shooting monster popped up? On a side note I forgot to put in: My favorite BGM on that whole game is Cave of Sagila. I think that's the name of it. I dunno. On a sider note: I really need to stop commenting when the video isn't over. That glitch was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Thank you so much for that. :D
My parents bought this game for me when it came out, and while I was still a bit too young to grasp it, I always loved playing it. I still go back and do a run through if I have an afternoon to kill... It's a really interesting and unique game!
"I brought over some Rolling Rock and drank, like, five of them. But it was college, and we used to drink excessively." LOL If five beers is excessive college drinking, then I was fucking Tyrion Lannister in college
To be honest, both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark haven't aged well, I think 007 The World is Not Enough for N64 is VERY dated, shows the power of the N64.
Simon's Quest, Rygar, Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus were my favourite NES games. From memory the booklet for Rygar told you alot about what you needed to do in the game.
I'm so happy you guys finally are tackling Rygar!! I love this damn game. Played it all the time as a kid, but never was able to beat it. Farthest I got was this place called Lapiz or something..?? Thanks for doing what you do!
I played this game A LOT as a kid and beat it without a guide (don’t know if there even was a guide for this back in the day) and have never, ever seen that glitch. That is amazing. Hopefully you can continue because I forget how far ahead you are now and if you have all of the items you need. One thing I did as a kid was grind the shit out if he game before getting to that turtle lion hamster boss. With upgrades it isn’t so bad once you get used to it. I am really glad that you are doing this game though - this was one I wished you had done for a long time so now I can cross that off my list...Symphony of the Night is still on the list though haha
I only have vague memories of this game; I know I beat it but don't really remember how... Thanks for playing it; it's giving me all sorts of awesome deja vu...
Depends on the beer and the amount you're used to. Over drinking is nothing to be proud of after all. If James considered it a lot for him, then it was.
Replace 5 beers, with 5 grams of coke and then replace Rygar with Mario Party 4. So we all had different experiences, but yet similar somehow if you get my drift, lol. Oh man, college around 1999-2005 was the last bit before the students became like fragile little snowflakes.
tHis game stuck out in my brain for life... Ive had the tunes of this game embedded into my brain up to this very day.. sometimes I didn't even realize where the tunes came... something about this game stuck with me. the music, the weirdness of it.. I too used to rend this from the video store all the time.. something about this game just sticks with you
I love hearing James telling stories, I could just listen to him talk for allday long. There's just something about his voice that is so calm and nice sounding.
You should hear him orgasm.
Jonttis Fucccckkk Uhhhhhhh 😂
It is very soothing for some reason. Except when he loses his shit as the Nerd. Then it’s just hilarious.
When's James & Mike Podcast coming goddammit
According to mobygames, Michiharu Hasuya composed both the music for Rygar and Dr. Jekyll. That would explain the similarities.
It's like being back in college.. I'm having breakfast, nursing a hangover, and these two are sitting on the couch playing games. A simple time.
Hell yea
Bandai is North American publisher.
Toho is Japanese publisher.
You are welcome :P
so whos the developer? who actually made the damn thing??
TECMO are the devs.
Mike Matei has to be my favorite human ever. He's such an awesome friend. Every time James wants to get deep Mike (5:33) shifts positions to focus all his attention on James and pretty much says fuck the video let me listen to my best friend.
The music composer for Rygar and Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde was the same guy. His name was Michiharu Hasuya.
Interesting info thanks
I would imagine both games use the same audio engine that Michiharu made himself.
Mike: "uh-bu-robot"
James: "WOOOOW"
Holy hell I laughed so hard
They turned into 8-year-olds, so funny
5 out of 6 beers James?! … You’re an animal.
When I used to play this at my neighbor's house it always kind of weirded me out. I liked it, but the atmosphere gave me a strange feeling. I kind of miss that about being a kid, having things like games be able to put you into your own world like that.

This game was a hidden gem! Not many kids I knew growing up had this game. It was by far in my top 5 all time games.
Josh Tintner
F Yeah!
Josh Tintner this game pissed me off to no end.. but yes it was good .. they need to bring it back but I highly doubt it.
What are other 4 ?
I loved Rygar. I had the game and still remember the levels and music. I enjoyed games like this where you had to explore to progress, similar to rpg but with more action and platforming. brings me back to the 80s watching this.
It's not a shield, it's a Battle Yo-Yo!
That glitch was amazing.
It was!
Thank you mario but your princess is in another castle :P
But Proto! What if it was meant to be there 🤔
ProtoMario lol
SILENCE CHECKMARK 🙄
the best thing to do to beat Rygar is level up your guy all the way before even starting to explore. i used to set up a turbo controller with the down and attack buttons taped down. Damnit just when it got really interesting!! We fell into a glitch! Lol
Stitch has a glitch!!! Ha ha, was lethal, this development.
Madlittlepixel I love this game! I played it constantly! I used to boundary break on the top down level with the lizards.
Glitches in my britches leaves you in stitches.
Madlittlepixel I guess we can call this a "glitchhanger".
Checked this online. It's a known glitch and has been used in speed running to achieve the current glitch WR.
Thought it was worth checking just in case I could nab it. :P

Sophie Neuenmuller Arbeith XII ,
Rygar for PS2 came out 2 years before God of War as well. It seems God of War would have had to have taken some influence from it
BubbaSteve The Greek mythology theme. (The game was known Warrior of Argus in Japan, related to the mythological themes)
I remember
BubbaSteve Well apart from the weapon and greek mythology it also had that 'cinematic camera angle' thing as well. I remember when GOW came on the scene people were saying the clear influence was DMC, but I was thinking it just seemed like a more brutal version of Rygar.
James and Mike Mondays are my favorite thing you guys do. More of this.
Ladies and gentlemen, James thinks drinking 5 Rolling Rocks is "drinking excessively." He is indeed a nerd, there are his bonifides.
Lol
What a puss! 😂
Also apparently James is a cheap date😂
Shows how much of an alcoholic you are. Drink 5 beers and tell me you're not intoxicated and if you're not then go to AA cause you got deeper issues dude.
69th like FTW. Gonna drink SEVEN Rolling Rocks to celebrate.
Secret Warp to Lapis! Nice!
Accidental speedrun tech, amazing
Mike and James really ought to watch more speedrun videos. Even without being a speedrunner, I've learned a ton of great strategies in games that way. Pretty funny to see them pull off a popular speed strategy by complete accident and not even realize it. :-)
Positron I did not see that skip at SGDQ. Maybe he didn't know of this. That glitch was amazing though.
Positron u dud or gir?l
Seriously, I cant imagine the odds of that. When I TRY to do that in my speedruns it takes me something like 5 tries a run to get it right.... while knowing how to do it. haha
Do an episode of James & Mike Mondays - The Freshman Years
I've always loved the NES version of Rygar. One of my top 10 fav adventure games for the console. Great music/gameplay/atmosphere. Once you figure out the RPG elements of the game it makes the game A LOT easier.
Love the Rygar & Rolling Rock story
That's how I'm going to be playing this game for now on.
SupaPixelGirl GRILL GAMER!!!!!!
Oh man falling into a level skip glitch! On accident! Thats pure gold
The speedrunners would be proud!
Damn James, FIVE beers?.. easy now! :D
Damn, I remember and love this game growing up playing it with my older brothers, this is nostalgic for me too
The same here, absolutely!
LOL You look like a viking, or a really tall dwarf ;D - but hey, looks can deceive and don't matter in the end, I get the feeling you're still a nice guy ;) One Up for nostalgia, man!

Awesome game.
ABOUT time you did RYGAR! HELL YEAH !!
The nostalgia!! Thank you!
I liked the reminiscing of college and the NES and the Rolling Rock and Rygar story. That glitch was way better then I thought it would be. Epic!
"Drinks 5 beers and goes crazy"
Hold My Beer Family
Love you guys, thanks for making my day better! Monday wouldn't be the same without you!
The gremlin hid well, I didn't even see him, just his work.
Woo Rygar! My brothers and I played this non stop as kids! Oh the wonders of Rygar! The music is so nostalgic.
Fuck yeah! It's quirky as hell, but still one of my favorite NES titles. It's my go-to when people ask about hidden-gems. Thanks for doing a Monday episode of it!
These videos are my therapy.
Great game. I feel like playing it again.
Wish I still had my copy of it. Ebay here I come!
Anonymous witchcraft?
how do you have 50 k subs with no videos?
It's not a shield. It's got a name, it's a disk armour.
Don't ask what that means. I've got no clue.
Game was like "I'm bored ... I know! You play here now!" **GLITCH**
Elvis want some lemonade? "Lemonade, that cool refreshing drink."
I got that game for x mas 30 years ago so its nostalgic for me to...The music is very catchy and its really not that bad of a game...ah the NES days
This was one my favorite games growing up. The music is so memorable
"Saved by a Glitch" Here's an idea for a t-shirt!
I remember watching my baby sitter play this game in the 80s.
Best player manual descriptions ever. Enemies described as "Animal men wriggling eerily"
Toho was the publisher for Japan. Bandai was the publisher for NA. (For Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)
And the title in Japan was OumagaToki = Hour of Disaster (Twilight)
...and? 🙄
One of my all time favorite NES games. The music is so awesome! I had a hard time with it as a kid, but I went back to it as an adult and beat it in one sitting a few years ago.
Did you use the map in the manual?
@@GorGob I never had the manual as a kid.
@@Ramshackle6984 googled it as an adult?
Mike damn it, more gun wielding Elvis, why is that not in some skit?
I always loved this game as a kid! And the music was always a part of it. The theme for this game was my favorite bit of game music as a kid.
Great game!
I went and rewatched the Andy Kaufman as Elvis video after this.... no not the Jim Carey version.
Another classic from you guys . Absolutely love you and your videos. I hear a lot of Rockin Cats nes sounds in this game . Oddly familiar. Keep up the great work gentlemen
Saved by the Glitch Gremlin... LOL
Rolling Rock and Rygar... great fucking story James! Played this game for YEARS and could never progress further than after getting the grappling hook. Played it again in 2008 and FINALLY beat it.
Finally I been waiting for this one guys😃
Holy Moly! A lot of late night playing back in the day with this. The soundtrack is great!
James walks back to his dorm and the rain soaked bag breaks open and everything spills out and he's like" aw shit what a bag of crap" and the witty comments for shitty games was born from that day on. Also didn't even need to use game genie for the level select.
These guys have never seen a 2 headed hamster turtle before?
They need to get out more.
They should stay there and farm those robots for half an hour. Fuck, now I have up play this tonight
Ha ha ha ha! Mike’s stuttering at the end while James is shouting! 🤣💓
Rygar my all time favorite arcade game
Alot of people dislike the arcade game because it's nothing like the NES but I still think it's good. Unlike Ninja Gaiden, arcade version of it not so good.

Son of a glitch...
"They have bugs blockin' all the exits, look at that..."
"Yeah, bugs!!"
Mike's Elvis impersonation was spot on lol...i couldn't stop laughing for hours...lmao
Attack and assail!
Always consistently good episode all the damn time!!! It's like anything Cinemassacre is always a for sure thing I can count on.
Mike's Elvis impersonation sounds like hank hill a bit lol
12:00 when your friend tells a terrible joke and you have to pretend to laugh 😂
Some day you guys will AVGN or J&M Monday ( or both ) *Nightmare Creatures* and the world will be a better place.
My parents bought this game for me when it came out, and while I was still a bit too young to grasp it, I always loved playing it. I still go back and do a run through if I have an afternoon to kill... It's a really interesting and unique game!
"I brought over some Rolling Rock and drank, like, five of them. But it was college, and we used to drink excessively."
LOL If five beers is excessive college drinking, then I was fucking Tyrion Lannister in college
I've always found the mountains in this game majestic. Especially since i lived next to one as a kid, this added a hint of atmosphere while playing.
You need a james and mike mondays with goldeneye N64
PD: Nice video!!
Yeah that game didn't age very well.... At 720 dpi or higher its not gonna be a nice thing to look at...
Better than any shitty PS1 game.
im pretty sure they did a 4 player goldeneye 64 years ago, you should look for it
perfect dark aged a lot better
To be honest, both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark haven't aged well, I think 007 The World is Not Enough for N64 is VERY dated, shows the power of the N64.
I love your faces when you found that glitch at the end.
This game is so simple but very entertaining to watch, fuck yeah
So many memories from this game. btw Elvis himself said that Andy Kaufman was his best impersonator.
i still remember that overworld music!
Simon's Quest, Rygar, Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus were my favourite NES games. From memory the booklet for Rygar told you alot about what you needed to do in the game.
Drinking five beers is excessive? :D
Drinking one is excessive
I literally was thinking the same thing the moment he said it. lol. A 12 pack would be excessive.
I'm finnish so five beers are a breakfast to me.
Daniel W if it was strawberry or chocolate milk.
it's just the beginning dude
I remember getting that lion turtle thing in the back corner and bouncing on it and attacking at the same time. Very very nostalgic for me. Thanks
Rygar for PS2 was really good, as well.
Key word being "was."
Great game
I'm so happy you guys finally are tackling Rygar!! I love this damn game. Played it all the time as a kid, but never was able to beat it. Farthest I got was this place called Lapiz or something..?? Thanks for doing what you do!
How 'bout some Bible games next month?
I played this game A LOT as a kid and beat it without a guide (don’t know if there even was a guide for this back in the day) and have never, ever seen that glitch. That is amazing. "OVER 1/4 MILLION SOLD IN JAPAN" :D
Bill Ding 0.4
I played this so much as a kid. How we beats these games as kids is amazing
Been waitin for this one
thanks dude
I only have vague memories of this game; I know I beat it but don't really remember how... Thanks for playing it; it's giving me all sorts of awesome deja vu...
I want to see you play X-Men and or X-Men 2 clone wars on the sega genesis. Like if you agree
I played that game so much as a kid, to this day if I screw up I hear the game over music in my head.
I like rygar
nice and simple
I was thinking of this game the other day. My brothers and I would play it for hours. We also rented it from the video store. Great times!
5 beers is excessive? Damn dude, you're a lightweight lol.
It was just a day or two ago when I searched to see if you guys had done this one yet. Thanks.
... 5 beers in college isn't excessive, you dorks. Like, maybe 15
jacobtheboy 25.
