I love the graphics in BotW. I'm so used to Skyrim, Witcher type graphics, so this was a "breath" of fresh air. It gave me the same feeling as those open fields in Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away, and My Neighbour Totoro.
Back in 2012, one of my justifications for buying a WiiU was that I KNEW there would be a new Zelda game on it. Like a lot of people, my WiiU got some use, but nowhere near what I was hoping for. The lack of 3rd party support for the WiiU made the over all experience of being a WiiU owner a little underwhelming. When Zelda was announced for WiiU and Switch, I had already made a mental decision that I would be playing it on WiiU, just to get VALUE out of the console, but it also seemed like a good send off for the WiiU.
Switch is gonna be the exact same thing: A Mario, A Zelda, A Smash Bros, A Mario Kart, another disappointing 3D Metroid, and a bunch of shovelware. The same formula they've been following since the N64.
The Wii is one of the most sold consoles of all time and it was also overhyped and later realized to be a complete piece of shit just like the Switch will be.
Its cool seeing James talk about a game like a kid would have. Dont really get to see him just talk about a game that was fun and exciting to him. i rarely get this experience as an adult. no one to talk to about games any more.
Same for me. The weird thing is that nearly all my friends still play video games, but the conversations just don't happen. And when they do, they're not really passionate or excited. Two young kids came into my store the other day, we had a conversation that bridged generations that was awesome. Excitedly talked games for a while and I realized how much I miss it.
Same, I used to talk with my friend like that all the time, twenty+ years ago. There's something special about games that can bring us back to that inner sparkle of enthusiasm.
Mr. Microwave Stopper seems like many adult gamers I know treat it like a chore because they’re going for stats online rather than just enjoying the experience and story
@@mahalokid Pixel graphics always age better than 3D graphics. Thats why a lot of games today still use 16 bit or 8 bit graphics rather than n64 graphics
Not always. There's plenty of bad nes graphics. The reason is because 3d graphics are becoming more and more realistic, something you can't do with sprites. And the games that are made in a retro style are mostly nostalgic. There's unlikely to be a sprite based game nowadays that's as big as botw
This makes me happy. With all the hard work that James does for his videos, all the crappy games that he forces himself to play for the nerd, to hear that he found a modern game that he loved this much, is great. He deserves it.
If James wants a fantasy world with realistic graphics, it sounds like Witcher 3 would be right up his alley. Plus, it’s got all the monsters that he likes (werewolves, vampires, etc).
Mike, there were 20 “Test of Strength” shrines out of the 120 total. Still too many, but it wasn’t as bad as you say, much less a reason to quit playing. Otherwise though, I enjoyed this video! Awesome to hear James not only played it, but put 145 hours in, and that he enjoyed it.
Bear in mind, James. They fit a console game onto a portable. That's like if they ported super mario world to the gameboy without any loss in fidelity back in the early 90's.
BotW was a great game. I very much enjoyed it. With that said, it didn’t feel that much like a Zelda game. I hope the next game goes back to a more traditional Zelda experience, with dungeons and where your weapons don’t constantly break.
His story about cooking in the game with his daughter was great to hear, I did the exact same thing with my niece and she totally got a kick out of seeing all the different final cooked products as well
About the guardians James, I used to run but I found out it's much easier to deflect the laser with any shield. The walking ones take 3 deflects to destroy. You wait for it to charge up the laser and when it turns blue you immediately press deflect but do it on a close range so the timing is easier
Loved the game. Biggest gripe: there was almost zero payoff for all of those over-world monster battles. I ended up avoiding battles after a while. It sucks because the combat was well done. I like to be rewarded for grinding.
what i hated was you couldn't even feel your power too.i wanted to feel like i can easily over power a weaker enemy when i got stronger yet they just took that away too.
I can't believe no one talks about the storyline. The storyline is Epic and had a ton to do with the enjoyability if this game. This is a very emotional Epic showdown unfolding.
There are some areas where the cel shading 'turns off' - they used the style to mimic anime ala Hayao Miyazaki .. not because the switch is too weak. i for one, LOVE the anime style they used.
The flower girl was such a great part. I think after you step on them a third time she says something like "ive lost count how many times i've told you, how do you not understand? why won't you get it" and then rages on you. I genuinely love that part.
dowingba I love the game too. I havnt gotten all the shrines, korock seeds, and costumes yet so looking forward to getting back into botw and finish collecting plus explore extra content when the new dlc comes out next month.
ILikeMe 123 Yes the graphics haven't aged as well but Twilight Princess is still my favorite because of the dungeons but I would kill to have it remade in this artstyle!
I agree. The graphics that try to push realism look great for a few years but eventually they look dated because improvements make them obsolete. When something is stylized it it's always stylized.
It's really cool to hear about your thoughts on this game, and I'm glad you finished it James! Only thing I'd say is that for a lot of the things you had issues with, there's usually a solution if you're clever enough. For example, with the rain, you can find dry spots under trees and in caves where you can always set up campfires.
You have to keep in mind that BOTW's engine was built on the Wii U, and was ported onto the Switch. It's a Wii U port. People tend to forget that, which is why the differences were almost minimal.
Not to mention they had to rush port it the Switch for the new system's launch date. They had to make sure it would run on the system. They didn't have the time to enhance the visuals beyond screen resolution.
It still started out as a Wii U exclusive and was only developed on Switch in tandem, late in development... Nintendo could've tried to push the graphics even further for the Switch release, but it wouldn't have worked on the Wii U, so all they could do at that point was polish the graphics a bit for the Switch version!
...right, after the core assets of the game were already made on the Wii U, hence it being a port along the lines of Twilight Princess. It's obvious that this game wasn't made from the ground up on the Switch.

"When you get up close there are times when Link's face is just two colors", "That's because it's all the system can do". For two guys who majored in film, this is a little disturbing. The Guardian arrows work for me. Also, you can parry their lazers with your shield. They really aren't hard at all once you figure a few things out. Even in Master Mode they were easy after a while.

Hearing James say Ancient arrows don’t damage guardians when they always one shot them triggers me.
It's funny how you mentioned all of your weapons breaking fighting the guardians right after mentioning the Master Sword losing power. The thing is, the Master Sword wasn't designed to be an all-around go-to weapon in this game; it was meant to be the perfect counter to guardians. The Master Sword glows with bright light whenever you face an entity of the Calamity (A.K.A the guardians!), and it does massive amounts of damage per strike. Also, in that state, the sword will almost surely not lose power. It's significantly upgraded in every way against guardians, and it's probably your best defense against them. So don't waste the Master Sword on random enemies, and it'll be your best friend.
Gotta play this with the classic tunic. On the time thing, my record for a single file on a game, The Legend of Dragoon, 275 hours. Max'd everyone and their attack combos.
Actually, the memories give you a better ending. It's not better by a milestone in my opinion, but it's better. And the memories serve as story of what happened, which I like.
I don't get why people always want realistic graphics,Itsnot the graphics that matter it's the art style that matters to me,and this game looks outstanding
The majority of people who want realism are talking about the art style, just like you are, and not necessarily the graphics. So, your comment doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's just a preference thing.
I loved the look of this game and it’s way better looking on switch by the way . I absolutely loved this art style I cannot believe I’m hearing this I don’t want realistic at all
Agreed with you, James and Mike, my main complaint beside the lack of enemy/monster, they should implement more “dungeon/castle/cave” for the adventure.
The lack of overworld music also bugged me. Adventuring in dead silence kills my enthusiasm a little. I was lonely and thought Link was lonely, so I caught 10 fairies and I carry them with me everywhere. I now have ten fairy friends.
Overworld music would've gotten really grating in a game of this size. It's fine when you're playing a game like Oot that takes around 30 or so hours to beat but a game like Botw that can take hundreds of hours to beat it would be horrible.
MrPizzaslice Not really. Witcher 3 has a bigger total map than this game and it had background music, while still having that atmospheric nature to it. It’s all about what music the developers choose and Witcher’s devs chose well. I’m sure Nintendo could have pulled off the same thing if they tried.
You CAN setup campfires in the rain. Just do it under a tree or rock. Try to find SOME kinda cover from the droplets. Even any rocky ledge that may protrude out over ur head, try there. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Try sprinting while holding the whistle button down. Infinite sprint!! Ps hylian shield can break but can be repurchased from the island that you built the homes on
Stylistically speaking graphics are excellent. Overall gameplay is fun, somewhat tedious at times but captivating. It would have been nice to see more diverse enemies, bosses and dungeons tho.
My biggest issue with the game is that there wasn't enough dungeons, and the ones the game did have (Divine Beasts) looked basically the same. They tried to make up for that with the shrines but they also looked the same. I know they wanted the focus to be more on the overworld but I really missed the dungeons. I still love the game though.
"Like 1 Terraflop" why does everyone care about power? Power means nothing if your games are not fun. The basis of a game is to have fun not graphics.... just an opinion, don't crucify me.
I agree. That's why all of these retro games still hold up. Graphics although pretty are secondary to core gameplay. I mean if graphics were everything battlefront II would be the best game...but it isn't.
Eated Cookies Yeah look at all the gamestop filled up with used Xbox and Playstation games. No one wants them. Nintendo games hardly exist in gamestop because people still play them.
The graphic style isn't due to less terraflops, it's pure ART DIRECTION by Nintendo. I'm glad they don't make things look as real as possible...every PS4/Xbox game looks realistic & GENERIC. BOTW looks like you're playing a painted animated movie. It's gorgeous.
I liked the game a lot, found all the shrines, most of the koroks, the secret village, the blue rabbits that give you rupees, the fairies, I even found out that if you hold less than 3 fairies in your pouch, the fountain gets refilled, and the amount of detail in the game is awesome, the clues and dialogue by the NPCs, the Easter eggs from precious Zelda games, the champion's weapons, how to make a catapult out of a box, a rock and a plank, this game is just amazing to explore and discover. Plus it got some great physics to play with. Sure, the story lacks some emotion and content, but I honestly didn't mind, just imo.
Should we tell him about the shield parry against guardian lasers or the Compendium where you can find items/enemies again easily after taking a picture of them?
It's so great to hear James being in love with a modern videogame. It's just so unusual for him, since he almost plays no games anymore, and if he does, he plays old NES or SNES games.
I have played 205 hours in this game and i am looking forward to the new story DLC coming this Christmas. I have never played a game for so long without getting bored of it. Instant classic.
Not enough enemy variety? There are over 48 different monster types alone, not including bosses. The whole point of this game is the adventure, which it does amazingly well. This game actually made me feel like I was on a grand adventure, and I am thankful for that. This game deserves every good thing coming to it.
While this game may not be the best Open world game. This is certainly what an open world adventure game Should feel like. Never have a felt "bored" traveling from point A to point B in this game. It always felt like YOUR OWN adventure the whole way through
I actually like that the weapons break and you can't rely on the master sword. It forces you to change up your strategy and helps keep the battles interesting.
You guys are wrong about one thing, breath of the wild is a wii u game ported to the switch so it's wii u graphics the switch is a lot more capable than the wii u
BOMBS BABY! Unlimited bombs helped me get through a lot of the game when I didn't want or have weapons to break. I killed almost every Hinox by running around, dropping bombs as they chased me.
Wii u an switch version maybe almost the same but the switch version is way easyer and quicker to get some playtime in. You dont have to boot the system it everytime you want to play or have spare time and dont have to sit in one place. Turn it on and you are instant in the game. (from controller or system itself) You can pick it up everywhere in the house and sneak some game time in. As for the game , i liked it but most zelda fans around me didnt like it as much as it was to much different from most zelda games. The game has huge ups but a lot of disappointing aspects as well. (execution of beast and a lot of shrines are to simple or repetitive, disappointing endings, a lot of the world map isnt used and only filled with korok seeds to no be to empty)
It's been nice hearing James talk about more recent games these past few videos. Would like to see him play more recent games maybe once a month on James & Mike.
I did absolutely everything in the game (pre-DLC) and maxed all equipment out and my final game time was 221 hours. Looking forward to doing it all over again when I get a Switch someday. This game was really amazing and I couldn't get enough.
Cel shading requires less effort. On top of that, so many areas look the same and the overworld blends together in a muddled cloudy grey. Needed more contrast. Very little stuck out about the art style. Many more games have way better cel shading these days.
Hylian shield broke on me when I was fighting Ganon in Master Mode. I also played Guardian with my kids and nephews. We acted out the final battle a lot as well.
I find it weird that they are complaining about graphics and that the Switch should be more powerful. I thought James and Mike's focus was gameplay not graphics?
The Switch is where I do most of my gaming. Although, I did buy an Xbox One PowerA controller because Windows 10 is made to recognize Xbox accessories and I wanted a controller I knew could be used with Windows and I play a lot of Need for Speed and indie games on my computer.
It’s an ok game, there was a lot that actually bugged me. The enemies being way to strong with their attacks an how often the weapons brake was just a little ridiculous. Also making the heart containers tied specifically to the shrines takes away the actual exploring for me, it just got really old really fast
Jean-François Briard yea I’ve got the master sword went through the trials an leveled that so it’s gotten more enjoyable especially with the guardian/ancient arrows lol
guys you know that you can reject the laser back to the guardians by parrying with your shield? Try it out it is an amazing thing to do (do it with the hylia shield)

i liked that you get the true ending from doing all the memories. and the final memory with zelda was incredible.
I absolutely loved this art style I cannot believe I’m hearing this I don’t want realistic at all
Nintendad816 * Agreed! I love how the art style is similar to a Studio Ghibli animation!
Ps hylian shield can break but can be repurchased from the island that you built the homes on
I think if there’s one game you can play for that time and never get bored it’s this I freaking loved every second so far
"Yeah."
James Rolfe
Stylistically speaking graphics are excellent. Overall gameplay is fun, somewhat tedious at times but captivating. It would have been nice to see more diverse enemies, bosses and dungeons tho.
My biggest issue with the game is that there wasn't enough dungeons, and the ones the game did have (Divine Beasts) looked basically the same. They tried to make up for that with the shrines but they also looked the same. I know they wanted the focus to be more on the overworld but I really missed the dungeons. I still love the game though.
James and his daughter moments are so awesome
The Hylian Shield does eventually break. But it can be rebuilt via a sidequest
I honestly loved Twilight Princess’s graphics “hides in corner so I don’t get beat up”
AJ Fornes same
AJ Fornes As did I :) Best LoZ ever.
@I hate Justin Y I like both.
Same - one of my favorites. Definitely my favorite of the modern games.
Jesse12489 Nintendo games hardly exist in gamestop because Nintendo is a publisher and ps4/xbox is a whole console
Your opinions are wrong and you must suffer the tortures of the damned!
They didn't even make an argument about that. How is that relivent?
James played mordern game for 125 hours??? Oh My Gosh!!! Nintendo makes all the people play games again
XD James, you can crouch by pressing the left stick
I love the game i just wish there was more lore, more "dungeons" and etc. It just seemed so bare to me for beinv open world
I thought I could subside with only the Wii U version........ and then the framerate drops happened
Got the Switch weeks later
Should we tell him about the shield parry against guardian lasers or the Compendium where you can find items/enemies again easily after taking a picture of them?
These guys are terrible at modern games lol
they definitely are. I enjoyed the game, and it deserved game of the year.
It's so great to hear James being in love with a modern videogame. It's just so unusual for him, since he almost plays no games anymore, and if he does, he plays old NES or SNES games.
I guess he'll always make time for Zelda.
I have played 205 hours in this game and i am looking forward to the new story DLC coming this Christmas. I have never played a game for so long without getting bored of it.
Instant classic.
Same!
Yeah but now that it is here, it is really disappointing........
@@austinmartin2927 I liked it.
Not enough enemy variety? There are over 48 different monster types alone, not including bosses. The whole point of this game is the adventure, which it does amazingly well. This game actually made me feel like I was on a grand adventure, and I am thankful for that. This game deserves every good thing coming to it.
They definitely needed more enemies. The boss battles were great. The fact that they're all Ganon was not great.
While this game may not be the best Open world game. This is certainly what an open world adventure game Should feel like.
Never have a felt "bored" traveling from point A to point B in this game. It always felt like YOUR OWN adventure the whole way through
What open world games would you consider better?
the Hylian shield can definitely break, but it takes a LOT of punishment to do it. I think the one I broke broke from blocking guardian lasers.
I actually like that the weapons break and you can't rely on the master sword. It forces you to change up your strategy and helps keep the battles interesting.
The memorie pictures are important! They give you the best ending.
I feel you, honestly, If I play something I am always thinking, "Should I stream this, should I record this...?"
The cooking makes health recovery super op if you know what to make. You always have a full supply of food to instantly recover, I love it
the graphics in botw are like artwork. james and mike wants to have graphics to be like a photograph?
Angry Sun lol that's why I am confused. This game is literally perfect yet the nitpicking on this vid doesn't match this game at all.
What makes a game "perfect" is subjective. And they both gushed about how much they love the game, why is it wrong to have issues with it?
Yeah, its less nitpicking, its just not their taste.
And wanting a specific look for a game is Just personal preference.
Well, they grew up along with gaming since Atari, NES. So it's understandable for them to want a realistic looking Zelda for once.
Best Wii U game ever
Also, those arrows kill guardians in one hit....
The shield parry helps too.
The Yiga Bow is excellent for killing guardians.
I'm not 100% sure they're OHKs. I used them several times. Some were one hit, others weren't.
That's your usual James, he blames something but its merely his fault lol
Mike's explanation at the end is just like playing Morrowind.
You guys are wrong about one thing, breath of the wild is a wii u game ported to the switch so it's wii u graphics the switch is a lot more capable than the wii u
Twice is not "a lot" more.
@@nowonmetube Wii U couldn't play Doom or Witcher
Ps4 pro is twice as powerful and theirs like no difference in looks from the og ps4 so
(from controller or system itself)
You can pick it up everywhere in the house and sneak some game time in.
I think Mike got unlucky because I'm pretty sure less than 10% of the shrines are Combat Shrines.
I did absolutely everything in the game (pre-DLC) and maxed all equipment out and my final game time was 221 hours. Looking forward to doing it all over again when I get a Switch someday. This game was really amazing and I couldn't get enough.
So happy to hear you played this for fun.
the games graphics is all done with cel shading. similar to anime. i think its gorgeous to look at.
Cel shading requires less effort. On top of that, so many areas look the same and the overworld blends together in a muddled cloudy grey. Needed more contrast. Very little stuck out about the art style. Many more games have way better cel shading these days.
Finding the memries are their own reward. Each one gives you a piece of the story and animated viddeo.
Gets you the true ending
Hylian shield broke on me when I was fighting Ganon in Master Mode.
I also played Guardian with my kids and nephews. We acted out the final battle a lot as well.
I love this game, and I'm glad you did too, James.
20:40 The Hangover comparison is hilarious.
I legitimately think this game will win game of the year.
It should.
Castle mario probably will
This and Persona 5 are my contenders for goty
It already did at the Golden Joystick Awards, and it's gonna again at the Game Awards!
Either that or Super Mario Odyssey (Which would be my vote)
The guardians can be taken out with one well-placed blue arrow. Also, just run sideways to avoid the laser (doesn't work when too close).
It’s an ok game, there was a lot that actually bugged me. The enemies being way to strong with their attacks an how often the weapons brake was just a little ridiculous. Also making the heart containers tied specifically to the shrines takes away the actual exploring for me, it just got really old really fast
Just get the reforge-able Champion Weapons, the Master Sword and the Hylian Shield and more weapon slots from Hestu.
James you can reflect the guardians lasers back at them. As soon as i got good at doing it guardians just became easy haha
James is a big fan of Zelda, he's made so many videos about the series. It's refreshing when he can enjoy a modern game.
