No exaggerations: this is one of the best games I've played in a long time. It's just pure fun and not padded with all the BS that usually plagues modern titles.
Anyone remember Kid Dracula? Here's a little write up about the Game Boy version on Mike's blog! www.mikematei.com/blog/kid-dracula-game-boy-obscure-gem-mike-matei-blog/
The older I get, the more my interest wanes in contemporary video games; and yet, Nintendo always finds a way to pull me back in. I just bought a Switch for this game, and it was worth it.
Exactly the same happened to me with BotW. I would play a game and quit after a few hours, only play on weekends. I played BotW every day until I did almost everything including DLC. This game was also great, I beat it including Dark and Darker side but didn't get up to 999 moons yet.
I was disappointed by SMO. Nintendo's charm is consistent throughout, but I didn't find the gameplay as compelling as previous 3D Mario titles. Mario is still leagues above most of his competitors, but he has lost some of the spark that made past games so captivatingly joyful to play from beginning to end.
@@jhock9171 yea nah. Not really. But some of our opinions change as time passes. Nothing wrong with that. Your opinion and feelings towards the series has changed but the game is the same as any 3d mario ever, except it looks better. It's still as charming as any of them ever were. Still has the same spark as any mario game. Nintendo nailed it with this one.
@@bmac2814 It is my opinion, of course, but no, I don't think SMO reaches the heights of the Galaxy games or even 3D World. Again, that doesn't make it a bad game, but subjectively speaking, I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as previous titles. I didn't love the world design and I thought (even for Mario) there was too much of an emphasis on collecting. I appreciate the attempt at open-world Mario, but ultimately it was not for me.
No it stands for Power, SMB3 has P Switch and P Meter aka Power Switch and Power Meter as well as PWing or Power Wing. Later in SMW we had the P Balloon aka Power Balloon. James was making a joke thats all.
I feel like Mike is really quick to judge something even though it's something he missed because he either wasn't paying attention or skipped the text/instructions.
yes when he does not understand something it must be a glitch or something developers could have made better... Mike said it couple of times in past stream but did not seem to give a second thought cause they clearly select both items... and text skipping... he always does that and ends up missing a ton of content in all games.... never testing the new features/weapons/costumes/unlockables or what ever a game has to offer... Batman:Arkham games or Cuphead just to name 2...
Even though i know this, i end up wasting 20 seconds watching mario show off his outfit twice because my brain wants to confirm which hat or suit i want
I do the same thing. I think it would have made more sense to actually select the outfit pieces with a button, but that's just how I personally feel. Maybe most people have no issue. It's not that big of a deal, though.
In games canon, Mario was only from New York in the original Mario Bros and Donkey Kong. Once Super came out, that was retconned. The whole "Mario is from Brooklyn" thing was invented for Super Show
Jumpman is canonically Mario. He just has the gift of writing immortality. They should make a Mario where he's like really old though. That'd be fun to play.

my one real criticism of this game is that when you poss... I mean capture things, your hat always changes to the Mario cap, and doesn't stay as the cap you're currently wearing.
The strangest thing about it is that it appears to be a design choice. I believe they did it as a way to express to the player the exact timing which things are happening.
jomb234 Many hats wouldn't work on some captures. Mario's hat is soft and open on the bottom, so it can reasonably stand on top of anything. Now try to imagine how the scuba gear, football helmet, or Dr. Mario's headband would work on something like a Chain Chomp. It just wouldn't.
I just wish James would care a bit more about these modern games. All the discussions that Mike does about the new releases would be so much more interesting if James would join in more often.
Regardless what you think about the new "gimmick." This game is most definitely different than most Mario games, the only ones Odyssey is similar to is 64 and Sunshine, and it's been a very long time since we've had a game like those. Plus, Cappy is so much cooler than any power-up in the 3D Mario games.
Animal Crackers Yes, it's a Mario game... So what? The game itself is very different from other games in the series. If this was 3D World or part of the New Super Mario Bros. series I'd agree with you. Edit: it seems that guy deleted his comment.
A better example is Breath of the Wild, which actually completely changes the formula of the 3D Zelda franchise (makes it more like the original NES Zelda, but c'mon, that's 30 years old, it's about time they go back to that open world design). I can't speak much on AC, since I haven't played the new game yet, but from what I see, it looks more like an aesthetic change than a gameplay one.
I think James means something in this 'style' could have been on Gamecube (there was, it was called Mario Sunshine), but there's no way in hell Gamecube could manage something as complex as SMO, or even Mario Galaxy on Wii.
I just noticed that at the festival, Pauline sings the words "Jump, man, jump!". Wasn't the character in Donkey Kong originally called Jump-Man before they changed it to Mario? Another fun little nod to Nintendo history right there :)
In my opinion Odyssey's graphics are perfect, they balance between style and cutting edge, this game will not get dated, like for example look at Mario, he isn't hyper realistic he is your good old Mario design just with more details.
My headcanon says that "Jumpman" is in fact the father of Mario and Luigi, and he's the one that had the rivalry with Donkey Kong, who is Cranky Kong now.
They really did made sure all ages could enjoy this game and all skill levels too, because usually with modern games Jame's seems clumsy unless it's spelled out for him
These comments turned me into an alcoholic again. -What does it matter that they aren't good at games? It's not a competition. -If you played many games, you might get less excited about newer games. Age doesn't really matter. -If you like Odyssey; Great, have fun. If someone doesn't like Odyssey; Hey, hope you find something that does.
Yeah, and if they are bad at games, only the new ones. Those fucker can beat something like Ghost's and Goblin's and Super C, which I never played, but i'm sure I would suck at it hard :D
Don't mean to be rude James, big fan, but when you said the game was intuitive for you climbing etc. There was literally a big arrow next to it telling you to go up :P
That's just part of the good design. The arrow was totally there, but it was subtle. James didn't realize he saw it, but he did and it made him think to climb the pole.
Cinemassacre full on agree. I was disappointed at how easy it seemed to be. Then I kind of caught on to the fact that the game seemed to be pushing me to complete the story before really hunting for all the moons. Not sure how I feel about that. Kind of liked it in the old games when you could get them all on the way and be a completionist about it. But the way better levels show up after you beat bowser.
Jeremiah I actually really like that the story is easy and fast and the real game comes afterwards. As a kid there was tons of stars in super Mario 64 that I couldn't ever beat and I never actually got to see the end as a kid. I think this style makes it easier for children to actually get fulfillment at seeing the end and collecting the easy moons but then it also has a challenge for veterans.
You know you can play each level until you get most of the moons and only then move on to the next level, right. That's what im doing, i have around 300 moons and im in the snow level. No reason to rush through it!. And yeah i know more moons will open after the end of the game, but still there's a lot to do
Yeah I totally get why they were doing it. Nintendo is softening things up a bit to be accessible to players that enjoy a lower difficulty. And they certainly kept the more difficult sections still in the game. I've found a couple of levels I still can't ace. I just felt like by pushing the more challenging levels all the way to the end of the game, it made me enjoy the story less. Because the last levels of the main story didn't really present as much of a challenge as say the last levels in 64 or sunshine it felt much less satisfying to beat bowser and therefore the game as a whole, even if I still do get a lot of satisfaction from some of the timer and puzzle challenges. It's still all there. I just kind of liked when it was structured and every level and star was a variation of the map with a specific challenge in mind. Seemed like a more fluent way to construct it. Still overall though, easily one of the best games of the year. Great to have a new good mario game.
You can put more than one item of clothing on at a time, you just hit A when you are done selecting. just move the cursor to what you want to be wearing both hat and clothes then hit A.
If they made an actual Mario game where you could play as Jerry Seinfeld, it'd be the greatest. It might even make me feel less miserable about getting my dad killed in a wildebeest stampede.
The audio from the webcam is ALWAYS slightly off by like a second, but now it's off by like 2 seconds in this one. You can hear the audio in the room with you guys isn't always matched to the game audio
Hey mike. Love ya man and agree with you Nintendo can do some silly shit, but this “dumb thing” is on you. You don’t hit A when you pick the item you want. You just press down and select the body part then hit A when you’re done selecting your whole outfit. Admittedly, it’s tough not to just hit A out of instinct, but you don’t have to actually go into the closet twice if you can get past that.
I noticed in the video something I missed when I played this part myself: the guy saying "jump man jump" right before the donkey kong part. In the original donkey kong game mario was called jumpman
The festival quest and its payoff have to be not only one of the best moments in Mario history, but as well in video game history in general. That scene is so awesome when you complete that quest.
The scene of the all of those workers disappearing into the light kind of reminds me of the opening scene of Joe vs the Volcano. Also loved how they mentioned that they wish they could play DK on top of the Empire State building and sure enough at the end of the video they were doing it lol
It looks like a lot of fun. The only thing that bothers me is that the humans look too realistic. It just seems like all the "people" in the game should have a stylized, cartoon appearance like Mario. It's hard to explain, but the way Nintendo did it feels outputting and just wrong.
That's just one level in a gigantic game. The point of the game is it's an Odyssey: it's Mario going all over the world running into all sorts of characters.
Almost every kingdom has something unusual like that, from the almost colorless Cap Kingdom to the steampunk Wooded Kingdom. It is supposed to let every kingdom surprise you, to make every kingdom feel like a truly different world, never seen by Mario before. And those living in New Donk City are not humans, but New Donkers. That is why they look different from Mario.
Robert Frans. I understand what yourself and others are saying. To me personally though, it is jarring. I don't think anything will change that for me. It wouldn't stop me from playing it, I'll just never care for that aesthetic choice. It will always feel weird to me when I see it.
Doesn't that just bug you that they think they've found a huge problem that only Nintendo does, take a moment to address it, when they in reality just completely didn't realize you can choose an outfit before exiting? BAAAAHHHH
Wish they would've commented on the "1 up girl" song during the New Donk festival. That whole thing is incredible. James was loving that part but they seemed to not even notice the song.
@@SPellswordProductions The children are in the comment section.. DK Rap was from Dk 64 and is more memorable since it appeared on the N64. Rare and Nintendo.
I love you both, and I can kinda see what people are saying by “please be more enthusiastic about the game”, but at the same time, nobody in real life would be screaming and jumping out of their chairs when they see a dinosa...........actually now that I think about it, maybe that’s an exception, but keep doing what your doing guys. ;)
"Super Mario Odyssey looks dated" Jesus Christ Mike. James taking the Switch outside the house isn't the only convenience. You can take it literally in any room while you have to do other stuff, or if you wanted to just chill and lay on the couch and play something, or...like you said you don't have the room to hook something else up. There ya go, don't need to hook it up and you can game anytime anywhere
But when you're doing other stuff, why have the Switch there? That stuff needs doing. And when you're not doing other stuff, why not go to the room where you have all your games and your comfy setup?
This game has made me turn my head even more than Breath of the Wild did. If there's a Switch Pro or something similar in the works, I'd probably wait for it

The scene of the all of those workers disappearing into the light kind of reminds me of the opening scene of Joe vs the Volcano. Also loved how they mentioned that they wish they could play DK on top of the Empire State building and sure enough at the end of the video they were doing it lol
this is how i like it. james mike and a game. not some other guy with them
+かつしんりゅう人づて read what he said again
I'm always fine with binyot being with them to play babby gaems.
5:17 "oh don't you talk about my boxes I LIKE BOXES!!😡"
I'm glad you're not starting from the beginning. I've seen enough of that from everyone else's channel
its so funny to see these retro gamers play new games, rise and grind gamers
Banana bagels
mcterryvideo Boom.
James looks happy, I feel like he's blushing a bit, like if he's excited
You would think James is 80 with his ability to follow these games
You guys notice that before they went into the tunnel in Donk City for the platforming part that the guys outside were saying Jump Man Jump Man :D
I notice that :) That's a reference that Mario used to be called Jumpman in the Donkey Kong Arcade game.
Yeah I thought James & Mike would have noticed an commented on it
30 years later and we're still playing the same stuff thats the game industry in general
I find the life system extremely similar to the one in the Super Mario Galaxy games.
From the man who brought you “Everything’s a skull” comes his newest masterpiece: “Everything has a mustache”.
The weird thing also is that Pauline is Cartoony, but everyone has realistic proportions
It's supposed to be jarring. Same thing with the T-Rex and... one of the later... things... It's suppose to feel like different worlds/artstyles.
I have never seen James and a modern video game in the same room before
You can change your whole outfit in one go you don't need to select each piece separately
Doesn't that just bug you that they think they've found a huge problem that only Nintendo does, take a moment to address it, when they in reality just completely didn't realize you can choose an outfit before exiting? BAAAAHHHH
Its Christmas of 2023, and i just got breath of the wild. Amazing.
You can choose all of your outfit one time. just hit down lol.
Omg I was dying when James made the I like my boxes reference. That my favorite one that comes up
Wish they would've commented on the "1 up girl" song during the New Donk festival. That whole thing is incredible. James was loving that part but they seemed to not even notice the song.
I busted out laughing when Mike started the DK Rap then realized i remember it word for word too
If you let Mario idle close to the boom box he'll dance...
why do i feel relaxed watching ur videos bruh keep up the good work :D
It makes me sad that they completely ignored that awesome song Pauline sings. :(
Faygris Japanese odyssey song OP.
Yeah, way to talk all over that -_-
Goddammit.
I was more annoyed about them singing the DK Rap over it.
Chaos Gengar True.
@@SPellswordProductions The children are in the comment section.. DK Rap was from Dk 64 and is more memorable since it appeared on the N64. Rare and Nintendo.
New Donk City really could've needed a rude real-estate mogul asking you to find his golden toilet
Yes! I wanted to see James reaction
got to play for a few mins on my nephews switch. good system. awesome controls. mario kart was pretty dope too.
"When have you ever had to pay to take your clothes off." at the Airport if the TSA's censors find what they didn't like.
I love you both, and I can kinda see what people are saying by “please be more enthusiastic about the game”, but at the same time, nobody in real life would be screaming and jumping out of their chairs when they see a dinosa...........actually now that I think about it, maybe that’s an exception, but keep doing what your doing guys. ;)
*you're
just press down on the control stick and you can switch back and forth between clothing items
I don't like that you can't play as Luigi Mario
Chris W you can play as Mario Luigi Mario though
Chris W you can actually get a Luigi skin. Basically the same thing.
You can play as Luigi Mario, Waluigi Mario, and Wario Mario
are you using the clasic controller or the joycon sticked together? which one is more confrotable to play with?
"Super Mario Odyssey looks dated" Jesus Christ Mike.
James taking the Switch outside the house isn't the only convenience. You can take it literally in any room while you have to do other stuff, or if you wanted to just chill and lay on the couch and play something, or...like you said you don't have the room to hook something else up. There ya go, don't need to hook it up and you can game anytime anywhere
But when you're doing other stuff, why have the Switch there? That stuff needs doing.
And when you're not doing other stuff, why not go to the room where you have all your games and your comfy setup?
Do you poop? Because you can play it while you poop, didja know that? LOL
I like to make sure my poop is of the highest quality. Can't be distracted with a game during such a critical time.
This game has made me turn my head even more than Breath of the Wild did. If there's a Switch Pro or something similar in the works, I'd probably wait for it
The Game Cube could output up to 1080p? I had no idea.
james: i like boxes.
snake: you're pretty good.
