David Wise, check out DKC Returns and DKC Tropical Freeze especially for Switch if you haven't yet for more of his godly talents. But DKC 2 and Ori and Blind Forest are potentially two of the best scores for a video game.
Andrew LaCosse the same composer for the original trilogy came back to make the music for tropical freeze. If you listen closely a lot of the music from that game are heavily modified versions of some of his work from the original 2 games. i believe there was a different composer for DKC 3 though, thats why its a much more bass driven and ambient sound track. and also why people dont like it as much. Because the composer for the original 2 makes literal video game masterpieces. and its hard to compare to him.
I remember being a kid playing this game and immediately falling in love with it.. Even back then I even fell in love with the soundtrack, it's so wonderful.. What a wonderful nostalgia trip.. Thanks James and Mike!
This game is 16-bit perfection. Everything about it is just awesome still to this day. I still listen to the soundtrack and the game is still super fun to play :)
LOL maybe it's just me. DKC1 is fine and DKC3 gets a little difficult for me, but for some reason DKC2 keeps kicking my ass. Whenever I would do a playthrough I can breeze through Gangplank Galleon and most of Crocodile Cauldron fine. Krem Quay is where I start having legit difficulty, especially when it comes to the Bramble and Hornet levels. And yet despite that I still enjoy and keep coming back to this game, between the graphics and killer soundtrack.
theres a secret real ending that is extremely hard to get. you can't miss any/ have to beat every bonus level and collect every kremcoin, then you have you unlock the extra levels thru that huge lizard you can visit and you can finally reach the true final boss/ending.
This is a classic. I like the end conversation about the difficulty, it's a great summary of how the game feels to play. Challenging but never goes overboard.
I started watching AVGN back in 2007, its the first time I get to be in the first 100 people watching a new James and Mike episode! Much love from Greece you guys!
Omg watching your play style versus my play style is completely different. I don't really have anxiety, but watching you is the closest I get. I want yell at "where are you going, you're missing !?" I really like these segments because of the conversation & seeing how you play (even if it slowly kills me at times). I need to find my snes.
It's not just that, didn't Mike say he never played this game? it is kinda painful to watch for me as well; I haven't played it for years, but I played this game a TON as a kid and memorized the entire thing. they are also not used to the physics and are scared to make jumps they clearly are cool to make. It's still nostalgic to watch. I hope this motivates others that haven't ever played this game to get out there and try it.
Scott W I have learned to just play them in the background listening to them talk and not watch them for my own sake. Nobody is telling them to be a pro, just not comically bad.
To be fair, Mike is just flat out terrible at games. He often overlooks things that ate directly in front of him wonder off n then wonder where something is n then bitch about there never being a clues to it.even though he was already at the place he needed to be. He's an idiot.
Spear Pig Actually, he is really good at gaming. Watch his full play throughs as evidence. He just seems to be BETTER at old NES games. You're kind of harsh, aren't you? Are you PIXEL PERFECT at every game you play, honey? Seriously doubt it.
I totally remember that James! So many games I rented to go back to later and still see my save file there! The benefits of living in a small town I guess. But there was always that sad moment where it had been deleted. :(
IKR? People confuse hardcore with the word fun because that’s what it’s all about, fun. Hard to be part of the gamer community when everyone wants to be an elitist.
You make it sound like it's about playing or something. It's not; it's about hardcore, badass, I'm-better-than-you-at-something-insignificant competitive murder-gaming
For fucking years when I played this, I always thought it was just a title screen typo. Then one day I was at work and for some reason was thinking of the game and it finally freakin clicked in my head.
One of my favorite games, and my favorite game from my childhood from the Snes gen. This is really cool to see people play it that haven't really played it before and have all of the intricacies ingrained in their heads. You actually can see James improving as the video goes on
when i was younger i played 3 A LOT, i rented it constantly and i dont know why i liked 3 more than 1 or 2. maybe the scenery? i just know DK 1 2 and 3 are in my top fav games of all time.
Really glad you guys enjoyed this. I'm sure a lot of others here finished all 3 to absolute completion like I did as a kid. They are all really challenging as you progress through without being absurd as you mentioned. Great graphics, great controls and the best soundtracks. Can't wait for you guys to try DKC3.
I wanted to add it but i still have the memories of rage quitting on the thorns stage. This shit gave PTSD at 10. However, the hive and rollercoaster stages are amazing also the stage where you are at the ship and its raining, that shit was like 4k resolution back in 95.
James really likes movies about making movies. I'm glad he's a The Room fan. A couple years ago I bought 10 copies on DVD and gave everyone i knew one for Christmas.
You guys should try out Rayman Legends from 2013. It's a great 2D platformer. There's a video on how they made the game and the tools they used were really cool, and Mike's and artist so maybe he'll think it's cool too.
While I wouldn't say it's the best game of all-time, DKC2 is my personal favorite game. The melancholic gloom of the later levels, the shadowing and variance in atmosphere, the beautiful and at times surprisingly moving soundtrack - it was tailor made to hold up as a nostalgic experience. I think once you get the 'flow' of running and platforming, it all comes together to be a really special game. Thanks for covering it, guys.
Good game with just the right amount of challenge, graphics still hold up well today and the soundtrack is epic and memorable. I played through about ten levels in this game over the weekend. Im going to try and beat the game which ive never done over the years. Great video as always!
I kinda like that they are not "good" at this game. Not using the run button and stuff. I've played this game so many times that I didn't remember that when I was young this game was kinda hard
Juan Carlos i noticed. But then again when you play a game and you're talking your mind is kind of concentrated somewhere else other than gameplay. I know that when I am in a conversation playing a game I'm really good,I tend you end up sucking at it.
Yes, it's riveting when James doesn't go back 2 meters to get a DK barrel, Tosses a chest at nothing, tosses it again and it hits an enemy but he stops caring about the chest...
My mom used to read the Bunnicula books to me as a kid, & I totally forgot about it until you guys just mentioned it. Opened the floodgates on memories I didn't even know I had. Awesome, thanks, guys!!!
Consoles had to have manual saving because the saving space was super limited and in some cases even optional. When consoles started having hard drives, auto save was a no brainer, that's the reason auto saves were more common on PC games when people were still using memory cards on consoles.
My favorite game. Ever. It has it all: gameplay, great level design, superb graphics and of course, such an epic soundtrack. God I've spent so many hours with this, good old times playing the same level over and over until I found every bonus game and DK coin to reach 102%.
Its weird to me watching people not running 100% of the time while playing DKC, or really any mario game, but then i remember that is a hard thing to get used to, and he did by the end. This is a game where james is trully better than mike. But it is also one of the hardest games on the SNES, i would say between super castlevania and contra 3
Yoshi Island is one SNES game with autosave if you were wondering, it saves automatically eveytime you finish a level, so the SNES was definetely capable of it. Maybe even more than play station or game cube that used their own separate system to save, that is the memory card. It was just not a common practice, not even in old school pc games
Auto-saving was also possible on NES, but it's extremely rare. The only NES games with auto-saves I could remember are Kirby's Adventure, Wario's Woods, and both StarTropics games.
You are right, kirby super star also had auto-save, and i'm sure a lot more snes games, or even nes games. I think it really fell from grace with the introduction of the memory card as the standard way of saving progress
Not really. It's just single frames of digitized renders from expensive SGI work stations being scaled down to the pixel count and color pallet of the SNES and used as frames of animation. It's literally no different than any other application of 2D animation frames on the SNES, but had far less visually appealing results than games like Earthworm Jim, Genesis Aladdin, and Yoshi's Island, Chrono Trigger etc did at the time. It actually involves less calculations and efficient optimization to alternate large, stored images for animation against 100% static backgrounds than it does to geometrically map and scroll/stream tilesets and individual pixels in real time. The only thing impressive at the time was rendering capabilities of the SGI work stations themselves, but what was actually being done in the game with cut down versions of those renders, as assets, was substandard.
That Pac-Man fact, someone just rewatched Scott Pilgrim vs The World, haha. Thanks for the great content, you guys are the best! I'll leave you alone forever now...
inappropriately aligned metaphorical nourishment they prolly did but even James said that he didn't play this game for many many years. And I think when you live a life like James you forget a lot of not important things like elements in that game.
DKC 1 and DKC2 are still awesome. I never cared much for the 3rd one though. Stupid Kiddy Kong and collect-a-thon styled game. It's probably OK, but it's just not for me.
There are tons of shitty games for the SNES, it's just there were more options by far at that point. Age probably has something to do with it to, for the NES we were younger and didn't know any better, so we played the shit games, by the snes era you could spot a good game easier and didn't get tricked into buying or playing shit ones.
I have to say I'm disappointed that after well over 200 episodes you STILL cant figure out its harder to play games like these while holding a conversation to make the video more interesting.
No problem, dude. Just sent some money my way for a capture card, a camera, a Super Nintendo and a copy of the game. I'll gladly demonstrate that talking and playing is easy. I'll wait.
The soundtrack to this game is so epically good.
David Wise, check out DKC Returns and DKC Tropical Freeze especially for Switch if you haven't yet for more of his godly talents. But DKC 2 and Ori and Blind Forest are potentially two of the best scores for a video game.
i love metroidvenia games but haven't played ori and the blind fores since its locked to the xbox and win10... fuck microsoft!
I listen to the playlist of the music all the time. So nice.
Andrew LaCosse the same composer for the original trilogy came back to make the music for tropical freeze. If you listen closely a lot of the music from that game are heavily modified versions of some of his work from the original 2 games.

Because the composer for the original 2 makes literal video game masterpieces. and its hard to compare to him.
Stickerbrush Symphony baby!
*one of the best games ever made*
Ahhh my favorite platformer of all time. So much memories with this SNES gem.
This game holds significant meaning to me. My wife’s grandma and her played it together growing up, and this cart was left to her when she passed. ❤️
I remember being a kid playing this game and immediately falling in love with it.. Even back then I even fell in love with the soundtrack, it's so wonderful.. What a wonderful nostalgia trip.. Thanks James and Mike!
The greatest platformer of all time and one of the best soundtracks ever.
This game is 16-bit perfection. Everything about it is just awesome still to this day. I still listen to the soundtrack and the game is still super fun to play :)
You can tell James is much better at this game lol
Great choice, DKC2 is one of my favorite games of all time!
One of my favorite games of all time, despite the massive difficulty. To me it's superior to DKC1 in every way.
its really not that hard
DKC3 is way more difficult then this. 2 is a bit harder then 1 I suppose.
LOL maybe it's just me. DKC1 is fine and DKC3 gets a little difficult for me, but for some reason DKC2 keeps kicking my ass. Whenever I would do a playthrough I can breeze through Gangplank Galleon and most of Crocodile Cauldron fine. DKC is pretty much perfection I don't get the love for the sequels myself, not a fan of the new assets
Thanks so much. This is my favorite game of all time! I'm glad you guys got around to playing it on youtube!
One of my childhood defining games
Whenever I’m feeling down the soundtrack makes me cry
Yeah....In A Snowbound Land. Forest Interlude. Stickerbrush Symphony.
I didn't think you could even get this far without running or roll jumping. Kudos you two loveable dummies
This is the horror film of the decade. How many scares i had. Oof lol
My favorite Snes and DKC game of all time!!!
Hormone Monster same here this game defines my snes days aside from other great classics.
TuLokotron2010 sountrack is amazing as well
Hormone Monster i hear you. im 30 and i still find myself listening to the ost on youtube.
For my money, this game has the best music on the system.
Walter Hunt music is awesome
Man, it’s a tough one between this and super castlevania IV
Walter Hunt No doubt
I still think Chrono Trigger beats it, but DKC2 is undoubtedly in my SNES Top 5 for music.
specially that brambles level with the vines woooeeeeee
My favorite game of all time ! :'D
Yeah I really enjoyed it. Wish I would have owned this one as a kid. Thanks for watching -Mike
you need to play more games then
mikallink That's not a bad choice though.
This was a must own back in 1995.
I loved the Bunnicula books when I was growing up! So fun you read them too!
I have my 7 year old son playing this game. Currently his number 1 favorite game 🥲
This is one of my favorite games of all time! I actually just finished re-playing DKC1 and 2, and I'm currently working my way through 3.
I think that's the best platformer on SNES. I have so much fun playing it
Omg watching your play style versus my play style is completely different. I don't really have anxiety, but watching you is the closest I get. I want yell at "where are you going, you're missing !?" Scott W I have learned to just play them in the background listening to them talk and not watch them for my own sake. Nobody is telling them to be a pro, just not comically bad.
lol "playstyle", please.
To be fair, Mike is just flat out terrible at games. He often overlooks things that ate directly in front of him wonder off n then wonder where something is n then bitch about there never being a clues to it.even though he was already at the place he needed to be. He's an idiot.

One of the best games of all time.
Did you collect all of cranky kong's 40 DK coins?
I totally remember that James! So many games I rented to go back to later and still see my save file there! The benefits of living in a small town I guess. But there was always that sad moment where it had been deleted. :(
Kirby's adventure on the Nes has an autosave feature, probably the earliest I know of.
Wait fr?
Seeing James and Mike do Final Fantasy 3 would be amazing.
I would have put 6, but they're specifically playing SNES.
That would be a great 40 parter! I’m down.
Oh, I'm sure they'd probably trim it down a bit and omit lots of irrelevant parts.
It always triggers me when people just say final fantasy III lol, I mean nearly everybody know you're talking about VI but still
I always write "Final Fantasy 6 for the SNES" and "Final Fantasy 3 for the Famicom" to remove all possible chances of confusion.
Have you guys looked into the upcoming Bloodstained games? The 8-bit one looks like it'd be great for a James and Mike Mondays video.
It definetly is the best DK game ever
I really love the extended J&M Mondays, keep it up guys!
Tough crowd, man. Nowadays people watching DKC2 demand a complete understanding of the mechanics, every level's tech, and 100% completion.
dreddbolt I demand 102%
Soooooooo glad you guys are playing this... One of my nostalgic favs.
Mike you are playing like aaaasssssss, gr8 content though 😊
5:20 he hasn't figured out the A button ability and ditches the snake instead. Blows my mind.
This is the best game out of the SNES DKC trilogy!!
I agree. Me, my older brothers, and my cousins used to play the old DKC games together all the time when we were kids.
James obviously knows how to roll-jump off ledges because he does in Slime Climb, but he doesn't use it anywhere else.
The title is a pun. Diddy's Kong Quest = Diddy's Conquest.
Rare loved puns. One of the elements that gave their games a lot of personality.
For fucking years when I played this, I always thought it was just a title screen typo. Then one day I was at work and for some reason was thinking of the game and it finally freakin clicked in my head.
mind = blown
I always read it as Diddy Kong's Quest, I feel dumb
The only SNES game I was truly disappointed by was Ultraman. I mowed a lot of lawns for a game that taught me a good lesson - rent/try before you buy!
lol
the modern equivalent is never pre order
One of my favorite games, and my favorite game from my childhood from the Snes gen. This is really cool to see people play it that haven't really played it before and have all of the intricacies ingrained in their heads. You actually can see James improving as the video goes on
Glad to see DKC2 on the series - definitely a favorite of mine.
For the record both Terminators were great but 2 was the best
That Pacman fact reminded me of Scott Pilgrim. Hittin' on James are we, Mike?
BrewtiCon Mohiswarman I thought the same thing I was thinking oh wow he's straight using Scott's awkward small talk!
"I'll leave you forever now..."
Legendary game. It's also one of the most intuitive games of all time so I am not sure how Mike was struggling so much.
Hou je bek en ga de koopkracht verbeteren
This game was my childhood. I love all three of the DKC games on the SNES, but this one is for sure my favourite.
when i was younger i played 3 A LOT, i rented it constantly and i dont know why i liked 3 more than 1 or 2. maybe the scenery? i just know DK 1 2 and 3 are in my top fav games of all time.

HOLD Y!!! James tell him!
Pretty sure it's A if you're referring to the snake jump
Oh you probably mean the lack of running. Nvm
@Daniel Pisciotta Did you like your own comment?
I remember Yoshi's Island saving after every level.
It's my favorite donkey Kong SNES game!
God I love this soundtrack so much. The water soundtrack is so good.
Amazing soundtrack. The best game in the series.
My favorite platformer on the Super Nintendo.
One of my favourite all time games. Best of the 3 DKC games. Pity this never made it on the snes classic.
John Carey couldn’t agree more!
John Carey
Just download it
This one is my least favourite of the 3
+captainwolf noodles Ok Tophat gaming man =p.
"What is that? Can you get that?" at the DK coin... come on haha
tron freak - ikr :O horrible :(
You guys should try out Rayman Legends from 2013. It's a great 2D platformer. There's a video on how they made the game and the tools they used were really cool, and Mike's and artist so maybe he'll think it's cool too.
Watching someone walking in dkc -_-
i know, how can you play this game without having your thumb constantly pressing down the Y button lol
"Forest Interlude" is my favorite nintendo track and its in here.
Playing with Dixie is like mandatory at the later stages of the game.
That crocodile dude? C'mon Mike, you're better than that. Up your DK trivia boi.
One of the best games ever!
Good game with just the right amount of challenge, graphics still hold up well today and the soundtrack is epic and memorable. I played through about ten levels in this game over the weekend. Im going to try and beat the game which ive never done over the years. Great video as always!
I love it when mike screams like a woman
Army Ants, Trash Bag Bunch, Battle Beasts, Z-Bots...I can go on and on with awesome things that never came back.
I kinda like that they are not "good" at this game. Not using the run button and stuff. I've played this game so many times that I didn't remember that when I was young this game was kinda hard
:D
Juan Carlos i noticed. But then again when you play a game and you're talking your mind is kind of concentrated somewhere else other than gameplay. I know that when I am in a conversation playing a game I'm really good,I tend you end up sucking at it.
Git gud
Yes, it's riveting when James doesn't go back 2 meters to get a DK barrel, Tosses a chest at nothing, tosses it again and it hits an enemy but he stops caring about the chest...
Omg can't believe you guys are finally playing this! This is my favorite SNES game. Great video as always James and Mike!
Omg I love this game!! I’ve been waiting for you guys to play this game!! 😃
My mom used to read the Bunnicula books to me as a kid, & I totally forgot about it until you guys just mentioned it. Opened the floodgates on memories I didn't even know I had. Awesome, thanks, guys!!!
Best DK game ever no DK Necessary

NEVER RELEASE THE Y BUTTON! Tape it down!
@@deezy81 how you gonna roll jump or glide if you never release it to press again?
you know its a good episode of James and Mike Monday when Mike shows off his PAC-MAN vitamins!
Definitely one of the best games on SNES. Glad you guys are playing this one. =]
Yes
31:00-31:15 You can see the struggle James’ brain is going through when pulling up info about “the flagpole.” Shit, 😂
This one has aged much better than the original DKC.
This is the worst of the 3
captainwolf noodle Yeah no.
Troll level 0
Captainwolf noodle imagine actually believing this.
The original's aged better aesthetically. The second game is harder which is a major improvement.
This was definitely my favorite number one game on the snes
Auto save came around when Xbox was created
Autosave was a PC feature way before the Xbox came.
Finally you guys are playing DKC2
My favorite game. Ever. It has it all: gameplay, great level design, superb graphics and of course, such an epic soundtrack. God I've spent so many hours with this, good old times playing the same level over and over until I found every bonus game and DK coin to reach 102%.

I feel like all the Kirby games have auto-saving. If they did not pioneer it in the platformer, it at least dates back to Kirby's Adventure.
Dream Land 1 doesn't, but yes Kirby's Adventure does
Fuck yeah!! Love yall and this game thank you guys seriously you have no idea how much your videos mean to us!!!
the best DK of all time!
It's the worst one
Tropical Freeze and Returns are a millions times better than the SNES games.
back in 95 Rare did a miracle by launching this game on the SNES... I respect your opinions, but contextualize this fact
SotNist if you were born in the 80's, you'd understand better ...
That Pac-Man fact, someone just rewatched Scott Pilgrim vs The World, haha. Thanks for the great content, you guys are the best!
I'll leave you alone forever now...
My question is: Have you ever played this game before??
La Waflera they said that at the beginning of the video
didn't look like they did.
inappropriately aligned metaphorical nourishment they prolly did but even James said that he didn't play this game for many many years. And I think when you live a life like James you forget a lot of not important things like elements in that game.
Mike deffinitely not. Just look at their swamp performance.
Maybe I'm too hard with them, I play the trilogy once a year, for like the last 5 or 6 years...
Great vid. Love the classic Nintendo/SNES play throughs
double posting to say that id be down with a long series from you guys like a FF game
to completion >,
I totally love you guys, always great content for yearssssss. Thanks so much yet again James and Mike. Keep rockin!
I prefer TNG and SNES
Automatic saving started in the mid of the PS2 era, yes you still had to use memory cards bu the system itself would save it for you.
Kirby for nes autosaved I'm pretty sure.
Trixie K. Yah games from nes/snes would as long as u didnt reset while saving
Bramble Blast was the bane of my existence when I was a kid. Amazing music but frustrating as all hell
DKC 1 and DKC2 are still awesome. I never cared much for the 3rd one though. Stupid Kiddy Kong and collect-a-thon styled game. It's probably OK, but it's just not for me.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage is one of the earliest instances that I can remember auto-saving.
You guys or AVGN need to play The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
Great video guys. Always enjoy this segment.
There are tons of shitty games for the SNES, it's just there were more options by far at that point. Age probably has something to do with it to, for the NES we were younger and didn't know any better, so we played the shit games, by the snes era you could spot a good game easier and didn't get tricked into buying or playing shit ones.
No joke. I guess these guys never played any game based on a TV or Movie license, because they pretty much all blew.
There are 13 more games on SNES than NES...
Anthony Quarm Duck tales and Goof troop where awesome tv based games.
Sometimes, I wish I was there with James and Mike playing with them.
I have to say I'm disappointed in AVGN's noobness while playing the best game on the SNES.
I have to say I'm disappointed that after well over 200 episodes you STILL cant figure out its harder to play games like these while holding a conversation to make the video more interesting.
He always sucks
I'm disappointed that you think James can't talk and play at the same time. He's still terrible at the game.
Glitcher2000 okay dude. Let's see you then. Remember, you have to hold a full conversation while you play. I'll wait.
No problem, dude. Just sent some money my way for a capture card, a camera, a Super Nintendo and a copy of the game. I'll gladly demonstrate that talking and playing is easy. I'll wait.
