That 3D rotating cylinder on the last level is amazing. I had no idea NES could do that. Granted, it's just an optical illusion, but its so smooth. I didn't plan on watching this whole video but here I am at minute 56. Great LP, great game.
A lot of people responded to my comments on their pictures with him saying he's one of the nicest guys they've ever met. I hope to meet him myself someday.
This game literally has only 2 "random" moments in it. The mines in Stage 5 and the fireballs in Stage 7. The rest can just be memorized. Even the fish in stage 9 have a pattern if you play the same way every time.
People around my age (38) don't have friends to get together (in person), and play games (especially retro games), cause most ppl my age don't have lifelong friends from childhood. I played tons of games in my youth with friends, but one way or another you move on from them unfortunately, and to find new ppl to get together and play nes games is very, very hard. I'm sure James and Mike's friendship goes back to childhood.
@D G yea me too. Id prefer to play with friends in the couch or with my family, it is one thousands times better. Remember the days of mario kart or mario party with friends on the 64? It was a BLAST. I guess you dont play games not because your AGE, but because man we have no time for anything. I am 26, and have given up gaming because simply I have other priorities, i have no kids tho neither. But work/gym/social/self improvement eats all my time. Sucks to be an adult.
What's weird is that games with the option of offline multiplayer tend to have higher sales, so there is probably some weird secret reason for it being removed.
I always forget that Battletoads is a NES game because it just looks way too good for that era. Makes sense considering it was made just a few months before the release of the SNES.
I wish the AVGN can do Battletoads Revisited Episode: *Battletoads (NES) - Revisited *Battletoads (Game Boy) *Battletoads in Ragnarok's World *Battletoads in Battlemaniacs *Battletoads & Double Dragon *Battletoads Arcade (?)
Atarster Yeah! I loved all of those games. I know for sure the original and Arcade will be in Rare Replay coming out next month. I really wish M$ would include all of it but there are tons of old Rare titles so probably not. Battletoads and Double Dragon was my go to game on SNES back in the day, always playing it.
It's rare to find friends like that that still share the same interest in video games I had friends fall out with each other for not returning cartridges
I finally beat the game tonight without using any warps or continues. It took me nearly a year and a half of playing the game regularly, but I finally did it! On my last life too. It is an awesome feeling to beat the game in its entirety, knowing that there are so few who have done it.
Pretty fun game! You can still finish the game with two players if you can get to stage 11 with any continues remaining. Let player two game over but *not* continue, so you can beat stage 11 with one player, and then player two can press start during the blue map screen afterward and it'll use up a continue to join back in for stage 12. Hope that helps!
I think local multiplayer is one my favorite things on gaming. It’s so fun to play with your friends with them next to you. The reactions and there seems to be a kinder reaction when your friends are actually there and not behind a screen.
I appreciate that James always clearly points out the number 1 spot when he mentions a number 2 spot, like at 0:35 for example; it irritates me a lot when people say "this one was number 2" and then don't say a word about number 1, so it is nice to see that James is like "and by the way, this was number 1".
James check out Maximo for the ps2, I think it may have been inspired by Ghouls n Ghosts you played a while back, you may even want to do it for a James and Mike Mondays episode if you wish. Thanks
..I think all that Nintendo Tape, and "board" having been slang back in the day was more a PA thing because I am the same age roughly as James and Mike and NO one around me in MN ever said that stuff. It was always cartridge and level
I agree, I have such fond memories of bringing my memory card over to my friends house to show them what I unlocked or whatever, now they want you to bring your system and your tv.
There were those chinese copies in my country (Georgia) and Russia too. They had different names: Dendy, Subor, ... but not Nintendo. They looked like Japanese Famicom and their joysticks had four buttons on the right side instead of two. The top ones were turbo buttons. If you had original Nintendo you would have to buy the Turbo controller separately.
Well, that's probably the only way I'll ever get to see this game from beginning to end, since I have such a hard time playing it every time! Congrats Bootsy!
3:22 In case anyone wants to know, this is a perfect example of what 2nd Person View looks like in a video game. (Controlling your character, but in the POV of another character)

Thanks, Bootsy, for taking time to do this sorta thing! It's a lot of fun to see you play these games with such skill and perseverance. Really looking forward to Bootsy Beats. Just awesome! Also, a great episode of feel-goodery couch co-op. Cheers, gents!
@@ELEKTROSKANSEN you gotta give me the rundown on what's going on with these guys lately. Been a while lol Used to love watching these guys play games!
You can get almost infinite lives in stage 2. You have to kill a crow then keep juggling it with hits with the sword and not let it fall off screen. Each hit gives more and more points until you start getting 1ups instead.
Thank you. I spent soooooo many hours 20 years ago with me and my friends losing over and over and over. Ok, I'm going to dispel the confusion over the various Battletoads releases again. There are five proper games: 1. Battletoads (NES) 2. Battletoads (GB) 3. Battletoads and Double Dragon (NES) 4. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (SNES° 5. (Super) Battletoads (Arcade) That's it. All the rest are ports, most of them watered down. Also: -to beat this version with two players, you have to waste Player 2's current continue on stage 11, then just bring him back for stage 12. -Bootsy actually took a shortcut on Karnath's Lair, that final snake is supposed to do a few more waves and it's pretty crazy. -Sharks take 6 hits to actually kill, ducks are immortal. You could have simply jumped over most of them though.
I wish people could just be happy and enjoy games and not be so worried about which company they support. I get all consoles and Play Pc. I love gaming. wow side step in my comment
I'll never forget the straight hours I had to put into each level, dying time and time again using the infinite lives code just to get through the game. On the sewer level, I gave up after about 3 hours of making no progress (and nearly gave up on the orb level after another 3), but I have seen and beaten all the levels, with the code of course. Tensed up and congratulated Bootsy as I watched every moment of this video. What a fantastic job he did; ridiculous game, will never forget it as long as I live.
holy hell! i just watched the video of you and mike going thru the turbo tunnle. until seeing that, ive never seen or heard of such a thing. you guys should be given an award for doing the impossible. 😁

It's Rare, I have to support them (I also supported the old Rare members with Yooka-Laylee).
TheTruth4k You'll love Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie as well. Perfect Dark is still my favourite game of all time, so trying it with 2 analog sticks will be interesting (even though I know it's on the Xbox Live Marketplace already).
MikeHoopla I like supporting the launch sales of games (it helps show the developer that there's interest in their product), and it's only going to be $30 + tax, so it's not a big deal.
Wow Just wow... hats off to you bootsy. When you had to start again i almost cried... I didn't know this game had more than 3 seriously I never got past the turbo tunnel like most ppl. Knew a guy that could nail it though, the warp zones, everything. Don't recall him ever finishing it though.... awesome work!
Probs cause it was made by a British games developer! (Rare, who would go on to make goldeneye 64, Banjo Kazooie and conkers bad fur day amongst others!)
Watching Mike saying that Super Pitfall is one of the hardest games he ever beat made me so proud of myself because it's one of the few really hard games that I've had the chance to beat when I was a kid. And it's also the greatest unbelievable gaming story I have because when I beat it I was about to take it back to the video store and decided to give it a last try. When I made it I was so happy, all I could think is that noone would believe me, so I ran to my best friend's house to call him to see it (it was something like 11am, when everyone was having lunch before going to school). When we came in the ending was already over and the game was on its start screen. Neither I saw the ending nor my friend believed me. Total bummer.
Why does no one seem to remember the Battletoads arcade game very well? I remember this being in practically every arcade for awhile. Also, it was extremely bloody and violent, unlike any other game in the series.
Bootsy is a fucking trooper. He never raged while playing this game. Who the hell would start from the begining and be calm as he was?

Knew a guy that could nail it though, the warp zones, everything. Don't recall him ever finishing it though.... awesome work!
That last level really reminds me of Nebulus.
TheMexicanRunner... enough said.
Incredible skills.
The most impressive thing about this game is that there are no typos on the final message when you beat it. Truly a rare thing in the NES era!
You guys should play Bucky O'Hare!
Awesome game
Why does no one seem to remember the Battletoads arcade game very well? I remember this being in practically every arcade for awhile. Also, it was extremely bloody and violent, unlike any other game in the series.
My hands were so clammy watching this
So looking forward to seeing that new Bootsy channel.
Thanks as always, for your time, guys. [:
Bootsy is the man!!! That is one intense game!!! Thank you for uploading! Def watching Bootsy Beats!
