This was the first video game me and my siblings had as kids. We were really poor. We got a second hand Nintendo and this came with it. We didn't even have Mario. It took us about three years to beat this. We didn't have a clue what the Hell we were supposed to do after a certain point. Then one day my sister got a diving suit. We used it to go in the water and found more Goonies. Also, the jumping boots for that really high ledge. I remember trying and trying for hours to jump it. I eventually beat it. Couldn't tell you now how I did it, though.
"I owned this game growing up. I never made it super far at all." My childhood experiences with this game as well. The side scrolling part was great, the doors deserve roasting.
Same, I'm very glad he actually beat this and Faxanadu. Wasn't expecting these Metroidvania games to be played by him for a very long time. Now if he plays Clash at Demonhead and Ufouria, I will lose it ^^
Fantastic, underrated Konami gem!! Great 1980’s memories from this one! A friend of mine and I used to use a stop watch back in the day to see how fast we could finish it! Original speed runners!!
Had this game as a kid and still own the same copy. Wasn’t ever one of my favorites but I never took the time and gave it the time it deserves. Also, in my mind the best song on any 8-bit game.
second half of this stream feels like Mike's havin a bad trip, and around 03:01:25 his mind snaps, Goonies 2 Heart of Darkness, that's how they should call it
Big mistake is wasting keys on safes that are openly viewed in the rooms. They only give useless hints. You use the keys on safes that only appear after you"hit" with fist or hammer. Those safes give valuable items.
What a shame they didnt make a Goonies 2 movie. But then Goonies set such a high benchmark that any sequel would have looked crap next to it. Thanks for the memories Donner and Spielberg.
If you find the transceiver aka the walkie-talkie in game you can use it to talk to The Goonies and using the clues they give you, you can figure out which one you have rescued. Andy for example says that she's "freezing to death" and she's the only girl that you find in the ice areas.
This is honestly one of my favorite games. It was the game I got Christmas 87 along with My NES and Mario/Duck Hunt. It kept me entertained for years. Back then, when we only had a handful of games to play, this game was perfect, because it takes a long time to explore every nook and cranny. Nowadays it doesn't hold up quite as well to other NES games because we have so many other games to choose from. Games that are much more straightforward. It takes time, but it's not so cryptic that you need a strategy guide. This game takes time to learn how to navigate through the corridor system and to understand the front and back sides of the map, but once you figure it out, it's not that hard. Thanks for the playthrough of this Mike. I enjoyed it!
Also, in the bottom left screen in a first person sequence, pay atenntion to which direction Mikey faces. Forward or coming back towards you. It indicates which way to go. Down on the dpad, or up. Lots of doors warp you between front and back. It's best to use the map.and plot it out on grid paper where you've been.
I can beat this game from start to finish without issue. I have memorized all warp zones, all items, all goonie prisoners, and all the fastest routs to take in order to complete it, I even took it upon myself to play through the entire game, recorded all of the information I found out about everything, and I even made my own map, with all of the details needed. I always love playing this game, and I love all of the music.
I went from Golgo 13 to Goonies 2 with my weekend rentals. That was a period of NES mysteries for me. Early gaming conventions, B&W Xerox copies of instruction manuals; nothing made sense! I did beat the Goonies 2!! But the odd part of the story is: I beat Dragon Warrior on an, almost perfect, Battery Cart Rental Save and someone else beat the Goonies 2 on my Easy Save from a Cart at the same store. But when I re-rented the Goonies 2 - my Easy Save was re-named after the Save I used to beat Dragon Warrior from the same store. A Twist! Never resolved! Missed Opportunities at the Family Rental.
THIS is my "zelda"/epic game. found it in a garage. took it. thought it had the movie on it... ofund out it was a game.. thought it would unlock the movie if i beat the game. ah the childhood ov a schizophrenic was fun every time it happens
A note for anybody else that has the masochism to give this a try without hints. You can only ever hit the wall directly in front of you. You can only ever hammer the wall directly in front of you, ceiling, or floor. The side walls do nothing for hitting or hammer.
"Ouch! What do you do?" For some reason this always cracked me up as a kid. It still does as an adult. This game is hard as fuck, but the music is so good.
I can't believe he never figured out that movement in the rooms depends on which way Mikey's character is facing. I also can't believe I spent the time writing this comment.
VS Goonies is awesome if you haven't played it. It's the arcade version of Goonies 1. Goonies 1 was never released in the U.S. on the NES. Only in Japan if I recall. I have it for my Red Tent. Such a fun, but difficult game.
I used to play this all the time. It was my go-to game because it was the only one that I could beat without a Game Genie. It reached a point where I could get through it without dying, until I got to the broken bridge, and that's only because it's the _only way_ to make it across without losing the boomerang. How the hell do they expect us to kill those chompy things on the bridge before they steal your boomerang??? But I learned that if you fall off the bridge at just the right spots, you can spawn further along on the bridge. I have to do it twice to make it all the way across, but it's _worth it_ to not lose that boomerang!
my parents gave me this game when i was a kid, i remember despising it for its needlessly monotonous and obscure gameplay. one small pleasure i did find in the goonies II though, was open-hand slapping the elderly sitting man and listening to his shocked rebuke of, "ouch! what do you do?" somehow, that just never got old to me.
This was one of my favorite Konami games as a kid. I beat it so many times and it was always a fun adventure. The music was incredible. Great platforming, and combat system.
Watching from the future, didn't see this mentioned in your comments but there's a way to tell which way to go in the rooms based on which way you're facing. In the bottom left you will see your character either facing you/the screen or facing away from the screen. This helps you orient yourself if you are going up/into the door or down/through the door you're facing. It's kind of cryptic like you say, but once you figure it out it makes the doors and duel maps much easier to navigate. Very impressed you beat this without a map! I used the Nintendo Players Guide growing up it had a really detailed map that helped a lot. Not a tough game but frustrating with the map and hidden safes.
This game was everywhere back in the day. None of us could figure the title. There was no goonies 2 movie and no goonies 1 game. Only years later did we find out.
I had this dung heap of a game as a kid as well. I kinda just played it when I'd run out of stuff to play and I'd get like a little further each time and eventually got pretty far and even rescued all the boiz but I never beat this game, thanks for showing us the ending and playing it like one of us would. Long live MF Mike.
It's very much like Metroid, yes. Same genre. Games like this were what made the NES library revolutionary ~1987 IMO. The main difference vs Metroid is probably the 3D rooms in this game that people sometimes get annoyed with. But I find the platforming and combat in this game to be more enjoyable than Metroid, and the varied environments were much more fascinating to the imagination IMO. I've never understood why this genre is called "Metroidvania" though. Castlevania is a linear stage-based action game with difficult platforming - I'd compare it closely to Ninja Gaiden but not Metroid. Castlevania 2 is an exception but they didn't stick to that formula (I wish they had).
yorgle11 it is strange that they call it that considering what you said- the Original castlevania was linear. It was only the later castlevanias that did the whole Metroid like map/level design. Games like symphony of the night and all the DS and GBA ones. Yeah the 3d rooms is why I mentioned that this game has a bit of shadowgate mixed in. Shadowgate was all 3d rooms like that. It’s a cool idea to mix game styles like that. I suppose they call them metroidvanias (despite only later castlevania’s fitting into that style) is that they for instance might want to say a game is in a genre like Metroid, but don’t want the impression to be that the genre would have to be limited to only projectile attacks- it could also have melee attacks like castlevania. That’s just a theory though. There’s a lot of cool games out now that have the nes style. Axiom verge which is A LOT like Metroid, but very good, shovel knight, which I haven’t played; but looks awesome regardless, the messenger, which is like ninja gaiden, bloodstained:curse of the moon which is like original castlevanias and bloodstained:ritual of the night which isn’t out yet but is going to be a lot like symphony of the night, hence the name. Do you like any of those ?
I agree with your theory that simply calling these type of games "Metroid-like" could give an overly narrow impression of what kinds of games they are. Offhand I'm not sure what other game name should have been mixed with it - I like Goonies 2 but those words don't mix well. Metries? Goonoid? Rygar- Metgar? Ryoid? I guess "Metroidvania" sounds better. There's also the fact that both Metroid and Castlevania were ongoing franchises - and that's probably the best reason. They were both relevant when the term was coined. It's probably stranger to me than most people because I never played the later Castlevanias so I don't think of it in that genre except for CV2. I really should play Symphony of the Night. I'm only vaguely familiar with it but I know everybody loves it. I drifted from consoles over to PCs by the mid-90s and missed that game. In fact I think the "newest" Castlevania I've played is Bloodlines. I'm not familiar with the newer games you mentioned - I don't keep up with modern games very much. These 2D adventure games are some of my favorites, and there's still a ton I haven't played from the NES/Genesis/etc. When I play modern (3D-era) games it's usually been Bethesda RPGs, driving games, or sometimes Rocket League. Some younger relatives have modern Nintendo consoles and I have sometimes enjoyed playing Switch/etc games with them. I find I don't seem to enjoy modern 2D platforming type games as much as I do on 80s-90s systems. I have a few theories as to why: Overly complex control schemes, maybe the controllers themselves, display lag, and excessively animated graphics that can cause a laggy feel. There's also some things I don't like about modern game design practices, but I've rambled more than enough. :) I will make note of the games you mentioned - if they are on Steam for PCs then I might be interested.
yorgle11 yeah, the fact that they’re both very popular franchises and easy to recall are definitely big factors for the term “Metroidvania” no doubt. That’s interesting you don’t like the modern retro type games. I really do, but everyone’s different I suppose. Shovel knight seems probably the most retro out of the games I mentioned, then maybe bloodstained curse of the moon which draws a lot of inspiration from castlevania, particularly the third NES one where you have different characters. The messenger and axiom verge would be next on that list, both those games can seem more modern-y at times, the messenger I think even has it so that the second half of the game has better graphics than the first from what I remember. Like... I think the first half is like NES graphics and the second half is like SNES. But I don’t remember for certain, I’ve never played that one. Axiom verge is really awesome though, the fact that they’re more modern like I said doesn’t really bother me, but anyway, I just figured I’d describe them a little better for ya just in case you’re interested in playing any. I feel like out of all those modern retro style games, there has to be some that you might like, and they’re very awesome so I hope you get to experience once that you like one of these days. Anyway, you definitely should play SOTN, it’s a great game, so maybe that should take priority seeing as you’re already slightly interested in it. And then out of the other games, shovel knight I think you might like. Haha oh and don’t worry about rambling, I’ve been more rambling if anything 😅🤣 sorry for the long response
I remember playing this at my neighbors as a kid. It used to anger me cause there was never actually a Goonies 2. On top of this game being incredibly hard for an 7 year old.
Yup, that was Ma Fratelli. It's possible to play through the whole game and never encounter her, though. And good thing, too! Not only does it take FOUR hits to stun her (instead of the TWO it takes for her boys), but she can climb ladders, too!
Exactly! It's so hard watching Mike play this. the game is NOT hard, the controls AREN'T messed up. He just does't want to play it and is blaming it on the game. He doesn't want to spend the time to understand how the controls work, he just expects to pick it up and the game match the expectations of what's in his head. Whose fault it that? Certainly not the game. Then he skips past holes in the ceiling and instead of even trying to go check it out he skips right past it then says he has no idea where to go. How the f**k can someone who has such a great memory to remember sub-item locations in games like Ninja Gaiden, not remember simple area connectivity? The ladders... Yeah, easy explanation. You're walking up to the ladder! Come on man... seriously... You know the guy in the lower left corner walking in place? It's there for a reason lol I don't think any video of Mike's playthroughs have every annoyed me, but this one actually is. Nearly three hours in and I don't know I can stand more bitching at the game for player hangups. and yes I've beaten it multiple times (as a kid nonetheless).
This was the first game I ever finished, and it was then I realized I would dedicate my youth to beating every game that crossed my path. Unhealthy, obsessed....who cares. It taught me a valuable lesson. To quote George McFly, "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."
Mike has the patience of a saint? These games I could never bring myself to play. I love watching this tat for hours though, Mike rules, that's patience
So I Find it frustrating to watch someone else play a game I know well, cause people always do it different. But it’s awesome to watch you work a game out that I’ve owned and always has frustrated me.
This game is unquestionably NES, it has so many elements from other NES games. I got Roger Rabbit and Friday the 13th vibes, and musically Zelda. Something about the look as well. I feel it's probably not such a bad game, if you had that back then it would have given you your moneys worth, a long drawn out adventure, exploration etc.. I didn't really understand the navigation/map system watching this, but i'm sure you can work it out playing it eventually, maybe the manual is more clear about it, drawing a map as well would probably help. It seems like its not supposed to be a game you beat in an afternoon, the cryptic side of things is something that makes it longer and more of a challenge. Zelda was a bit like this as well, you just thrown in there with no direction, you wander around freely and eventually figure it all out.
"Wait, did I beat it or not?" Sign of a fantastic ending.
Lol yeah.
Maybe notorious but not fantastic
Spoiler alert, lol. Oh, well. I will live on. And Prosper.
3:01:29 Mike loses it! A big “FU” from the Konami there! Poor Mike! Thanks for taking one for the team. True gamer.
I will hear the "indoors" music forever, it's tiny loop has been burned into my poor brain.
Same. Now as an adult this game fascinates me and I want to see everything in it
Man, here's a game I haven't thought about in a long while. Had this as a kid too. Nice nostalgia trip right here, thanks Mike.
One of my all time favorite nes games. Played through it so many times I can still knock it out in an hour and a half.
I know what you mean. Easily filled up an entire weekend playing this game. But a hard sonovabitch to beat!
Mike, you're holding it down for all the NES fans out there! Really appreciate that a lot!
Mike//James are wicked fun to watch and nostalgia with
IT'S FUN TO PLAY THE GOONIES 2.
9. 3:50:46 Classic Nintendo ending with top less mermaid.
1:17:35 When you need a bomb but the waterfall steals it
Thank you man, I've been waiting for you to play this for so long.
I had this game for a while growing up and gave up. Thanks for playing this game all the way through.
Same, I'm very glad he actually beat this and Faxanadu. Wasn't expecting these Metroidvania games to be played by him for a very long time. Now if he plays Clash at Demonhead and Ufouria, I will lose it ^^
I loved this game as a kid even though I never beat it. It was so huge and mysterious with so many weird things to figure out.
43:45 there's your Zelda reference😂😂
Fantastic, underrated Konami gem!! Great 1980’s memories from this one! A friend of mine and I used to use a stop watch back in the day to see how fast we could finish it! Original speed runners!!
Had this game as a kid and still own the same copy. Wasn’t ever one of my favorites but I never took the time and gave it the time it deserves. Also, in my mind the best song on any 8-bit game.
OMFG I was in tears @ 3:02
second half of this stream feels like Mike's havin a bad trip, and around 03:01:25 his mind snaps, Goonies 2 Heart of Darkness, that's how they should call it
3:01:01 Find the Goonies
Awesome I love this game. I beat it back then. There's a lot to do in this game.
Big mistake is wasting keys on safes that are openly viewed in the rooms. They only give useless hints. You use the keys on safes that only appear after you"hit" with fist or hammer. Those safes give valuable items.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I played this growing up, and this makes a LOT of sense, haha. Thanks for the perspective.
This video of Mike's is definitely a favorite of mine.
Watch the Goonies movie right beforehand to make it even better!
This is honestly one of my favorite games. It was the game I got Christmas 87 along with My NES and Mario/Duck Hunt. It kept me entertained for years. Back then, when we only had a handful of games to play, this game was perfect, because it takes a long time to explore every nook and cranny. Duckcunt was filthy
14:53 Jump
One of my favorite NES games ^^ but I still hate the in-door levels, reminds me too much of Friday the 13th.
I love when he was desperately looking for a bomb, he missed one in a waterfall at 1:17 and didn’t notice. I’m sure it’d have made his head explode.
10. 1:06:17 fav avgn episode answer and breakdown
For an 1987 year game its an masterpiece.
I just finished your sword less Zelda run now this.. these are great and therapeutic lol! Thanks, buddy! :-D
Favourite game of my childhood. I still remember where everything is.
Thanks for the post Mike loved the Goonies 🎥 Cool to see the games never got to play those
Love this game! Played the hell, out of it as a kid. So much so I used it to help me sleep lol
A lot of people will be happy to see this one now, thanks Mike,it is actually an ok game
Is it worth a shot? At first I thought it looked bad but the more I'm watching it might actually be decent
@@chrismorin51 Its actually a good game. One of my favorites on the nes. Defenitely worth a shot.
@@xXbelmontXx Omg that is some hardcore nostalgia blindness this game is NOT good lol
I love this game! I had to resort to a guide a few times to finally get through it.
rented this a few times as a kid, great to see someone complete it. Great Job Mike
Your lion in the AVGN episode of Wizard of Oz was hilarious.
Damn! You just plastered the game to the ceiling with your shit!
When i used a hammer to find things in a wall i only found ruptured pipes and electricity.
I went from Golgo 13 to Goonies 2 with my weekend rentals. That was a period of NES mysteries for me. Early gaming conventions, B&W Xerox copies of instruction manuals; nothing made sense! I did beat the Goonies 2!!
But the odd part of the story is:
I beat Dragon Warrior on an, almost perfect, Battery Cart Rental Save and someone else beat the Goonies 2 on my Easy Save from a Cart at the same store. But when I re-rented the Goonies 2 - my Easy Save was re-named after the Save I used to beat Dragon Warrior from the same store. A Twist! Never resolved!
Missed Opportunities at the Family Rental.
James an Mike monday to this beast...
Sovgw- stressed out video game warrior.
After seeing that one, I'm certain we'll be getting a full-on Nerd treatment of this game soon.
THIS is my "zelda"/epic game. found it in a garage. took it. thought it had the movie on it... ofund out it was a game.. thought it would unlock the movie if i beat the game. ah the childhood ov a schizophrenic was fun every time it happens
Another childhood treasure right here, loved this game so much!
A note for anybody else that has the masochism to give this a try without hints. You can only ever hit the wall directly in front of you. You can only ever hammer the wall directly in front of you, ceiling, or floor. The side walls do nothing for hitting or hammer.
Oh, and hitting is not the same as the hammer. They do not do the same thing at all. So you have to also hammer the places you hit.
2 things... Is it ironic that the game thanked you personally Mike? And thank you for beating a game I never had the patience to beat.
3:50:20 for the ending.
"Ouch! What do you do?" For some reason this always cracked me up as a kid. It still does as an adult.
This game is hard as fuck, but the music is so good.
i used to play this game a lot in the 6th grade in 1987. lots of fun. the music was really good too.
Me: "Wow, it sure would be fun to play Goonies II again."
One hour later: (smashing cartridge with sledgehammer)
I wondered what the mermaid in Abobo's Big Adventure was referencing since it did seem a little too random
I love the music in this game. Iconic 80s 100 percent.
I remember this game. The position of your guy in the bottom corner determines the dpad while in a room. Hated that back in the day.
Had this game as a kid too. Never made it far but popped it into the NES a lot. LOVED the soundtrack.
2:56:50 NES fatigue rears it's ugly head!
I can't believe he never figured out that movement in the rooms depends on which way Mikey's character is facing. I also can't believe I spent the time writing this comment.

4 hours to rescue a topless mermaid... worth it.
Watching from the future, didn't see this mentioned in your comments but there's a way to tell which way to go in the rooms based on which way you're facing. good music on this game
This was really painful to watch!
ME THE WHOLE TIME:
"Up and to the left, stupid!
Up and to the left!"
I feel somewhat the same. Although I love Mike's streams and this game, I wanted to say stop hitting side walls, only in front or floors and ceilings.
The game seems like a weird combo of Zelda, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street.
Oh yeah man! Replayed the game just last week (and beat it again) for the first time since it came out,and now you’re doing it,you make my day! 👍🏻
Thanks Mike!!!! I remember renting this all the time back in the day.
I used to play the heck outta this game. If I remember right I could get to the mermaid, but I never could rescue her. I can't wait to watch this
Always thought it was weird that while we got Goonies 2, the one without a movie, the Goonies 1 game was a Japan exclusive.
I remember playing this game....and never getting anywhere lol
The game breaks mike at the 3 hour mark😄
This game is harder than a fossilized wooley mammoth turd.
I had this dung heap of a game as a kid as well. Always was and is a great game. Love it!

I will make note of the games you mentioned - if they are on Steam for PCs then I might be interested.
yorgle11 yeah, the fact that they’re both very popular franchises and easy to recall are definitely big factors for the term “Metroidvania” no doubt.
Mannnnnnnn, I’m 2 years late on this stream, but I will check it out tonight!
Its not bad controls you go pick according to which way he is facing in the bottom left corner
It's there for a reason lol
I don't think any video of Mike's playthroughs have every annoyed me, but this one actually is.
George McFly was a creepy mega-bundle-of-lighted-sticks
@@joedent3323 Biff?....Is that you??
classic game!
I beat this multiple times as a kid.... very underrated game
Looks and sound a lot like "Friday the 13th".
Mike has the patience of a saint? These games I could never bring myself to play. I love watching this tat for hours though, Mike rules, that's patience
Subscribed thx for streams👊
One of the best NES games. Tough...I think I got 3 or 4 goonies max.
You can shoot down with boomerang and up press jump then up you can also throw and can also throw diagonally
Am I crazy, or does Mike swap out the poster on the right (his left)?
So I Find it frustrating to watch someone else play a game I know well, cause people always do it different. But it’s awesome to watch you work a game out that I’ve owned and always has frustrated me.
I had no idea what to do with this game back in the 80’s. I got somewhere in some caves and that was it. This and A Boy and his Blob.
This is amazing I want to play this NOW Love your videos @mikematei all your content.
You must hate yourself lol
I loved that part where they a locater in the movies.
I have a lot of Nostalgia for this game , but afraid to go back to it
I beat it back in the day. I believe there was a Nintendo Power I used with a map that told to where all the doors went.
You should check out or try to get the black Official Nintendo Player's Guide. It has a map in it telling where all of the doors lead to
Awesome seeing you guys together again!
