3:03:50 This part of the movie used to freak me out as a little kid when the Predator turned into a giant floating head and started bobbing around then Arnold had to hide beside the stone fireplace to survive......one word..... intense.
My favorite part of the original film was the flying 7 foot Predator head shooting meatballs wrapped in spaghetti out of its mouth at Arnie... so glad they included that part of the film in this game.
If I didn't know better, I would have thought this was the first time that Mike ever played a video game in his entire life. The part where there's a blinking hand pointing down but Mike's confused about where to go just killed me lol.
Also, a lot of the enemies in this game look like they came from, like, five different games. Besides the predators and army dudes, everything else just doesn't belong. Some good stuff right there.
I'm already seeing some that look like someone's lazy rip off of Mario enemies. Missed opportunity to use the scrapped Van Damme suit design for an enemy.
I dont watch live streams in general because I dont have the time. I watch all of your runs later because I love retro (and modern) gaming and you're wicked good at it. Some of the games, like this one, are just ridiculous. It's just a good time. Nice work Mike.
Hi Mike! Been watching you on youtube since the old AVGN episodes, so I'm a fan i guess. I was thinking, what makes me spend my evening watching you play predator for the NES? It's a crude and dated piece of entertainment but I still find it appealing in a weird way. Im thinking it evokes memories of childhood for us 80s kids and will continue to do so. Would love to hear you talk about these retro games on a philosophical level one day. Thanks for all the content throughout the years, keep it up! / Olof
Mike I just wanted to say binge watching your old streams is helping me get through some tough times right now. I’ve also been collecting and playing NES games in recent years mostly because of you and James. I just ordered The Guardian Legend because of your “Obscure NES Gems” video. Can’t wait to play it!
Pressing "Select" picks your game up where you left off. Don't push "Start" or "Select" and "Start;" if you do, you have to start the game all over again.
One hell of a nightmare playthrough Mike. That sucked that going into the final boss fight with the predator;it was hard to conserve you health after replenish it.
The design of this game struck me as very similar to Universal Soldier on SNES, and I think both of them were the lowest budget Contra clones for their system, some generic alien shooter/platformer ripoff with as little money and care put into it as possible, left open for a cheap overnight license based sprite swap of the main character and whatever little addition of story they could get away with, and then shoved out the door with little to no playtesting. Personally with Predator I think they tried that, but some guy at the top said "It's not like Predator enough, get a clear Arnold in there and make him fight predator somehow", and then they had to actually make the "big mode" levels as fast as possible, with no background and basic enemies. They even reused the floor pattern for the platforms, and the reason you can only have one bullet onscreen at a time for most weapons is it's faster to code that way. You have to write a little extra code if you want them to have multiple bullets, it's just playing an animation and waiting for it to end rather than loop it. Contra, for example, lets you have 10 bullets at once, and speedrunners know the exact pattern to mash the button in to attain that as often as possible. I would bet they only had a few production photos of Arnie and the alien to work with for the cutscenes. This NES game was a rush job, no doubt about it. It sucks, because the other Predator games, like ps2's Concrete Jungle, are really good. I love AVP on the 360 as well. So it's not as cursed a franchise as some others, at least. Oh, and I watch these because I'm 40 and I played a lot of these games myself, and it's cathartic to watch you beat them, the worse the game, the more satisfying the victory. And they're good to work to in the background, so some of them I'm on more than a first viewing. I usually watch a little at a time on my phone inbetween other things on a first run, and it gives the day a nice continuity. I have to walk to the store, that's 20 more minutes of Mike doing the "in the dark" section of The Jetsons or something equally as daunting. And I love your authenticity, your unmarketability, shall we call it, your honesty. I feel like you might object to me calling you an artist, but my dude, this is you having an experience that's human and real with these games, and that's as "70's performance art" as it gets. "This is a happening", they'd say in the 60's. This is an artform, to me anyway, and you're a Bob Ross in your own right.
This game is just slightly better than Action 52, but it has similar problems. Like I hate when the programmers can't figure out how to properly make the enemies spawn in a way where the player has a chance to attack or jump over them. Then you have a huge cluster of enemies and the player will have to take damage to move forward.
I just watched you and Ryan talk about games. I love the white board explanation of who framed Roger rabbit. I played thru that game enough times I would have to use a white to explain it as well. I'll go ahead and watch predator now
Which country got the Predator directors cut where the ending is Arnold in dayglo pink bicycle shorts and a laser cannon fighting a gigantic floating predator head while a bird flies around laying lava dumps on him?
YES!!! Glad to see a Mike take on this game. I rented this a thousand times as a kid, and I somehow enjoyed it even though it was excruciatingly frustrating. I have a soft spot for Robocop 2 and this game somehow lol...both frustrating and having slippery controls, with Robocop 2 being a trial and error nightmare.
I never played predator as for robocop 2 the moment I lay eyes on the box cover with the robocop 2 reflection on Murphy helmet I was draw in, terrible game but the memories with my dad and brother will never be terrible
The first level part where you pickup grenade you actually can get out of there, by jamming grenade into a wall (jumping and pressing hit button while next to a wall will stick grenade inside that part of a wall) also you can duck and press hit button to place grenade next to you instead of throwing, if done correctly you can easily clear enemies that are approaching.
You missed the machine gun in the beginning of stage 1. It's in the tree so jump on the rock then jump up. Took me many playthroughs before I noticed. Also, the developers kinda knew the game had problems like bad stage design; so they added a self-destruct feature if you ever get stuck. While the game is paused, press A or B to self-destruct. Be careful not to hit these buttons if you pick the controller up after a break though.

There's nothing like a good relaxing session of Zelda 2 after all the stress with Predator. Although I did find a bit stressing seeing Link be attacked by sperm monsters in the overworld map. Run, Link, run! Sperm monsters are trying to impregnate you! (Note so that noone wil complain about this comment in 3 years time: Mike did play Zelda 2 on the Famicom over on Twitch after he beat this game.)
I loved this game as a kid. I played it all the time. It was frustrating, but it was still really awesome, and has great tunes. There is a trick to beating the predator in the non-Big Mode stages, you just get close to him, kneel and fire with the laser. He'll just jump up and backwards and you'll be ducking his shots. EZ PZ.
Awesome climax, when after losing lots of green blood from bullets, the predator detaches its head and makes it grow. Arnold shoots its mask and off, and then says "Uz an ugly fuddrucker!"
The music and art was great. Predator should have had a decent horror game adaption. BUT Predator: Hunting Grounds is what Friday The 13th: The Game (2015) is and it's pretty fun. You can play the predator after all.

Sure it does

I have tons of nostalgia for this game
at 36 ...i can't help but notice ....just how awesome the nes was
The Japanese version of this game has the levels in different order, you start in Big Mode instead of normal stage. Great video Mike!
soundtrack sounds like god rest ye merry gentlemen
Only an hour and a half in and I am fascinated in your documentation of a journey into madness.
They should make some video game based movie where the hero ends up fighting nothing but stereotypical enemies like bats, scorpions and spiders.
Bats, spiders, and snakes would fit this game better than the weird knock off Mario enemies. lol
