Mike seriously needs to do a "So you think you know Ducks?" video. The first 15 mins of this was truly epic. Take my idea Mike, the only thing I want in return is for you to open the video by saying "I'm gonna teach you how to give a duck."
In Finland, until about the mid 2000s, basically any family with kids had a subscription to the weekly "Donald Duck" magazine, though it was very common for adults to read it as well. It was expected to be in households as much as the local newspaper. That's why pretty much everyone here, except for the newest generation, knows who Carl Barks is. When he visited the country in 1994, he got a rock star's welcome, it was on the news, and the government-owned media filmed a documentary about his visit.
Damn that opening was fire You got that passion for the Carl Barks comics and its awesome to see that on display Some of my earliest memories of comics were finding some TMNT adventures comics at a yard sale as a young kid and my dad excitiedly digging out a handful of ratty Donald Duck, Mickey, and other similar cartoon comics he and my older brother had collected when they were growing up. As a dumb kid i shrugged it off but eventually I got around to reading then, and the Donald Duck was _Walt Disney's Comics and Stories 295_ Huey Dewey and Louie were all trying to help Scrooge and Donald trim trees at his lumber mill up north, but the real zinger was the last two stories. The Beagle Boys find one of them has the hiccups, so to try and cure it by doing something dangerous, they break out of jail and try and rob Scrooges new vault they heard about. The real story tho is Emeral Isle. Scrooge hears about a contest where the biggest emerald wins a cash prize. Thinking it has it in the bank, he rolls out one of his treasures, but Flintheart has a slightly bigger one and Scrooge panics traveling out to this mystical rumored place that Flintheart found it, and during and earthquake they find a secret cavern full of _Indiana Jones_ sized ball trap Emeralds. Theres tons of actual twists in each story and Id encourage anyone to try and track a copy down. Now that im a filthy manbaby nerd whos actually started collecting comics, i went back out and got another copy to replace my long lost copy and its still such a blast. And i still havent even started collecting the Fantagraphics books which just look gorgeous
i would recommend the “carl barks library in color” books. I think those are the best reprints by far. The fantagraphics books are out of order and the coloring isnt as good. You’d have to find lots on ebay, but thats the way to go.
@@mikematei oh absolutely but the real thing is that Art of Carl with all his painted work, *that's* the next book for my collection haha. Found a Tex Avery "behind the scenes" type book with similar vibes and I just love those treasury books of content you normally wouldn't see
Love all the lore exposition from Carl Barks comics. While Gladstone Gander is one of the most flanderized characters in the Duck Universe nowadays, in the old comics he could even lose to Donald which added a lot to the tension. One of the best examples I can think of Gladstone vs Donald is 'Trail of the Unicorn'.
I love when you talk about the similarities between this and Megaman, I was like "finally someone said it" I've noticed this before, the music, the graphcis, the sprites for the enemies etc....must just be a Capcom thing
One of my all time favorites! Fond memories of climbing through the window after school & eating a pb & j or a bowl of cereal & watching this or ghostbusters and talespin for awhile too! Good choice for a play through!
Well u can get it on xbox consoles and ps4/ps5 via the disney afternoon collection game (unless they took if off the stores) which has both ducktales, rescue rangers 1 & 2, darkwing duck and talespin
The game is probably underrated/less well known just from coming out so late on the NES. Much fewer people would've had it just due to that. The original was huge; but it didn't get a quick followup like Megaman did (probably due to the other Disney Afternoon games going straight into production.) Magical Quest on SNES was already out by then, too. As for characters, they were probably limited to what source materials Disney directly provided to them, and who knows what kind of wacky licensing terms they had to deal with (could've cost them per character.) Also, it's generally better to make new stuff with the limitations of your game in mind vs. trying to squash something existing from a different medium down to fit and *hope* the distinctive features don't get totally lost in the process.
Recently got into Uncle Scrooge comics halfway because of your old Donald Duck comics overview video from years back (the other half being my first playthrough of DuckTales: Remastered). Came to this video to see how different DT2 was from its predecessor, stayed for the epic Barks-pilling and Launchpad slander. I could probably stop watching past the first fifteen minutes and still leave the VOD satisfied. I peeped an episode of DuckTales weeks back (I'm a zoomer, so even reruns never aired when I was a child), and it definitely seems more kiddie-oriented compared to the Barks comics. I do hope you make another Duck comic retrospective sometime soon, scripted or not, it'd be a treat to see.
Good game, but not difficult at all. This is possibly the easiest Disney Capcom game on NES. Even easier than DuckTales 1 and Chip and Dale 2. The most difficult game among these is Talespin.
Just started watching old episodes of Duck Tales on Disney+ a few days ago. Wow such a great show even today compared to the Duck Tales remake. Speaking of which the Duck Tales video game remake…😘.
That rant at the beginning was golden! I would love rant compilations just like you do rage compilations! Or maybe each rant gets an individual video so that they can be in a playlist. Either way, thanks for the great content Mike!
12:27 AM CDST (Yes I'm a night owl) I'm listening to Leonard Nimoy's Space Odyssey Music From Outer Space on RUclips now in another YT window and watching you play DuckTales 2. Thanks for the recommendation.
Wow, that Ducktales rant. The Ducktales cartoon show is a classic. Launchpad was great in the show and in Darkwing Duck. Yes, it's different from the comics and I know the comics are excellent and very influential but both can be great. Same with the various TMNT shows and comics. The whole rant kinda reminds me Jim Cornette ranting about wrestling. Or Annie Wilkes ranting about Rocket Man serials.
They could add new characters. But why add a pilot when there is no need for one? It makes scrooge seem incompetent. He flew planes in the comics and so did donald. Im okay with the villain they had in treasure with the golden suns.
@@mikematei I always viewed Launchpad as just another chauffeur. And I didn't view Scrooge as incompetent. Just as a bossy character who threw his financial weight around, but not necessarily in a way that made you hate the character. El Capitán was a fantastic villain. I think I've heard you express you're not a fan of the cartoon reboot either. I haven't seen it yet but I've heard the show makes more references to the comics than the 80s cartoon did. It probably also makes a lot of changes, too.
I'd agree that the Ducktales exhibit sucks. No excuses for it. Not fully on board with your take on the 80's cartoon though. Ducktales is among the best shit to come out of 80's animation, even if it's not as good as the comics. It was a huge sensation and lasted for a billion episodes, so I can't fault them much for adding in new characters over time, or making a few changes from the comics to reach a wider audience. Sure, those changes made it worse, but not so much to prevent it from being great.
It's the same way I feel about TMNT after actually seeing how wild and gritty the original comics could get. I completely understand why every time they make a new "version" they have to tone it down and make it appeal more to the younger kids, but it still always sucks to see characters "flanderized" even if it means you get _Last Ronin_ or Fantagraphics beautiful restoration books
Mike, when you read the old Donald Duck Uncle Scrooge comics, do you read in your mind, Donald’s voice in his cartoon Quacky voice, or a normal human one?
Oh man your intro made me almost shed tears. That’s exactly what i’ve been telling my wife! how Disney theme parks are tearing down real monuments(and also historical) just to replace them into CG screens or whatever. So how much longer before Disney cancels Scrooge McDuck, him “going around the world appropriating other cultures’ treasures to bring back to his vault, making him even richer?”
Fun fact: In hungary they interrupted the episode where a whale ate Scrooge's ship when he was jumping in tantrums on the table because they announced the death of the prime minister Antal József. This made a trauma for a lot of kids. We had to wait years (or for the lucky ones who skipped school next day daytime ) to see what happened in that episode.
I bought the DuckTales remake from a little while back on sale and my impatient ass found it practically unplayable with constant unskippable cutscenes. I don't know what they were thinking.
