I've been playing the remake Wonder Boy Returns Remix and I have mixed thoughts on it. The gameplay is fun but they add a charge move that makes the game easier (for better or worse). The game also runs at 50fps so it's really juddery.

I hounded my mom to buy Adventure Island for me one day at Circuit City back in 1989, solely because I had seen the a copy of the sexy little green-labeled cartridge laid out on the desk of a mate at school with the awesome title "Adventure Island" causing my little 5th grade brain to surge with excitement and anticipation. My mom caved and bought it for me. Years later, I was punished by the universe for my selfishness and forced to work for Circuit City for 7 years. I'll never get those 7 wasted years back, but the worst part is that fact that as a Circuit City employee, I was required to sell extended warranties--and not even an OCEAN'S worth of Christ's blood would be enough to wash away the sin of selling an extended warranty to a fellow human being. Hell awaits!
One of those games where it's very hard to beat. We know that now. But did the developers have any clue it could be beaten back then once released? Did they have a panel of crazy players back then that spent hours like streamers do now just to confirm it could be beaten?
Level 8-2 is as far as I ever got. That level was programmed by Satan. People play the first world of the game and think the rest is also a piece of cake, but I put this next to Ghost n' goblins and Ninja Gaiden.
When Mike started screaming in this video, I got a sharp pain in my neck out of nowhere! 😳 I guess that I have acquired some PTSD from Mike's streams...! Can't handle that today. Going to watch Star Trek Voyager instead. 😊
That game is one of the most steaming piles of shit. You won't really get what's really wrong with it until you get to one of the castles. Only then does the 'fun' begin.

I'm like, huh, I remember a game like this on the MSX, almost exactly like this... And I search for it, but no Adventure Island on the MSX. But then a different game popped up, Wonderboy, and that's the one, it's a simpler version of this basically, really interesting :D
Should definitely follow up with some Wonder Boy games. Loved Wonder Boy in Monster World, Monster World IV, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. I also really liked Wonder Boy in Monsterland (arcade), but you basically have to cheat and save scum to beat the game. It's just too brutal. Get game over in the final level and you have to play the whole thing all over again.
Awesome playthrough. now that you played the first one you should play through the second Adventure Island game. It's one of my favourite NES games and one that I obsessed over all the time when I was a kid. Keep up the great work. I love your vids.
Mike, you should try the original arcade version, Wonder Boy and see how far you can make it. Continues are automatically disabled starting from area 5, like all the games in the series. Because the sprites are bigger, I think it's a harder game even though snakes don't shoot fire and there's no fire upgrade that destroys stones for the axe/tomahawk.
I love this game, it's one I played a lot as a kid. And about the shitty yet entertaining movies I recommend the Skateboard Kid if you haven't seen it!
Jesus that last jump between the spiders was some bullshit...it's nigh impossible without a weapon. Since this is more than 4 years old, I hope someday you play the (imo) superior sequels, Adventure Island II & III.
I liked this game better when it was *Wonder Boy* on *Sega Master System!* Everything about this game is weird: music, color palette, sound effects, animation, character design, enemy placement, difficulty (easier). The only thing this version does better is displaying the score and number of lives remaining during gameplay.
The difficulty is not easier, since it's designed (or just copied) in the exact same way as the Wonder Boy game, whichever version. Pick a stage from this game and compare it to the same stage from the arcade for example, they're the exact same, same difficulty. Music has some variety too, Wonder Boy would play the same music in every single level except for the fourth stages.
@@rov-0250 I thought I noticed additional invincibility fairies and hatchet placements, but okay. It's been a very long time since I played the arcade version of Wonder Boy. I do agree about the music variety in Adventure Island, though.
