I knew all of this about DKR and was still entertained watching this video. Great job. Okay, the only thing I didn't know what bananas speeding you up by 2.5% per banana. I thought it was 1% per banana.
Yep, it's +2.5% per banana. They are incredibly strong and very important when it comes to how we route individual levels, as getting more bananas on lap 1 increases the average speed throughout the track. Some tracks like Whale Bay don't have up to 10 bananas close enough to the optimal line to grab, so you'll often see runners only ever getting up to 7 bananas there, as grabbing the next nearest bananas would cost more time than they would save on a track of it's length.
The Wrong Warp isn't fully understood yet. All the DKR community knows at the moment is what results you can get across all versions, and the odds of the different warps on the Japanese version. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a way to affect what result we will get when performing the Wrong Warp. Hopefully one day it gets figured out!
I still remember hearing about when the original thing that broke the game a couple of days before an GDQ run ages back. The runner had to learn it in under a few days.

*is tricky from diddy kong racing tricky from starfox* well now you got me thinking about if fox was in diddy kong racing, although i assume he would make it in a new mario kart before a diddy kong racing game.

Taj's Tips are as follows: After beating Tricky the 1st time "Try pressing brake while skidding!" After beating Bluey the 1st time "Take your finger off the accelerator, just before you hit a zipper!" And that's all the tips that Taj gives you. The 2nd tip about taking your finger off the accelerator just before you hit a zipper is for getting the stronger boosts, it will turn the boost from having pink flames and gray exhaust into green flames with rainbow exhaust, which also results in a longer boost. What's odd is that a lot of people even in the speedrunning community for DKR also misremember Taj giving the tip that reveals "A tapping" which is not true. I believe it's what is called a "Mandela Effect," a false memory shared by many people.
@mrponytaledkr I think he only said that in the German version but it is true anyway because I never managed to beat the game while pressing A continuously but once I tapped it, the game was easy as pie.
I didn't knew Wrong Warp was also a thing in Diddy Kong Racing! Would it be possible to warp directly to the Future Funland with the plane and then clip to the final boss? Like how they managed to warp from the Gohma boss battle to Ganondorf's castle colapsing in Ocarina of Time?
There is a way to beat the game in less than 5 minutes, though it uses a variation of the Wrong Warp glitch that is only possible in 2-Player mode. It isn't allowed in the normal Any% runs since it makes it a completely different run, but it's still very fun to show off!
If there was a consistent way to get the best RNG then yeah the route would become a bit faster. Sadly, there isn't a way to do it yet. Hopefully it gets figured out one day!
@@renakunisaki We're not sure why that loading zone is placed there, most likely the track was changed at one point in development and it was forgotten that it was still there. As for why it behaves differently across different versions, we're also unsure. All we know is what it can do and how we can best use it for speedruns
Yes, you can use any character for speedruns of DKR. It's true that TT (and also Drumstick) are not unlocked from a fresh state of the game. However, the community that runs and moderates the game decided a long time ago that you may use the unlockable characters for new game speedruns. Once you've unlocked TT or Drumstick, they can be used when starting a new save file, and those characters will remain unlocked even if you delete all your adventure files, as their progression are saved onto the cartridge itself and not to any one game file. Technically, it does make categories like 100% or Any% a New Game+ (NG+) and not a true new game speedrun. But all using a different character would do is make it the same run, but slower, as you can do all the important time saves with every character. Hope that cleared things up!
idk if annyone poitned it out, but the reason speedruner go out of bound with the tier 1 boost is cause you get a t4 boost whenever you use any boost (from items or speed pads) and you ain't holding the A button
The boosts only go up to a level 3 if you hit a blue balloon 3 times in a row. There is no t4/level 4 boost. But yes, not holding A as you get any boost will increase it's effectiveness by letting you boost for longer. One main reason you don't see runners using level 2 or 3 boosts is because the amount of extra boost you get from leveling it up doesn't scale linearly. Often times you'll see runners using level 1 boosts into another level 1 boosts, because using many level 1 boosts in a row actually yields more boost than stacking up to a higher level. Hope that helps!
19:05(ish) - the way this is worded, it sounds JUST LIKE one of the crazy stories my friend would tell me, about the N64 cartridges i let him borrow...one time he told me that he unlocked Diddy Kong, for MarioKart64...then, he said, in the next race (using Diddy), he got hit by a Green Shell, so Diddy "died" and was no longer available to pick, unless you wipe ALL the save data and "unlock" him again... ...but ill be damned, if the Video doesnt literally show T.T. "coming down and STOMPING on you, with So Much Force that you FLY UP and over the wall....." like, maybe my friend WASNT just making up sone dumb story, but had some other glitch happen, that he thought 'looked like' Diddy Kong...
@@renakunisaki Nowadays the community knows the exact best rhythms for A tapping. For a while it was thought that the faster you "mash" the A button the faster you go, but thanks to some math done by some TASers and from looking into the game's code, we know the best speeds: a single frame A press every 4 frames (1 frame of A, 3 frames of no A, total of 4 frames.) The game runs at a variable framerate (intervals of 30fps, 20fps, 15fps and 12.5fps, though 12.5fps only happens for a few frames at a time and knowing the tapping speed is almost not helpful.) So the math checks out to the following: 30fps = 7.5 A Presses per second (450BPM), 20fps = 5.0 A presses per second (300BPM), 15fps = 3.75 A taps per second (225 BPM). Any slower or faster than these rates and your effectiveness for A tapping will diminish, but even if you're off the optimal tapping speed you'll still be getting more speed compared to just holding A.
Sorry for being off topic, but it is my pet peeve, if a level is called broken when it is actually totally fine for every normal player. If I play the game normally and a glitch that hinders me from progressing, then it's broken. If there is some obscure stuff you need to do that no normal player would ever encounter (and that is then even used for an advantage) it is not really broken / bad
Yeah. This game is _breakable_ but you have to actually make an effort to break it. Sonic '06 is a game that's actually _broken_ , the glitches get in your way when you're trying to play normally.
I wish Nintendo would release this for the Switch… a hard copy or download. Also Perfect Dark and Killer Instinct would also be awesome to play on the Switch. Those games made by Rare were way awesome! And I don’t mean have it available only for paid subscription memberships but as a download for just the game you want to play it anytime anywhere.
I wonder if they’d be able to. They rereleased the game in 2007 but since Nintendo didn’t have the rights to Conker and Banjo, they had to replace them. If they did do a release for the Switch, which version would they base it on…the beloved 97 version or the meh ‘07 version. Yeah my bias is definitely showing as to which I prefer. 😅
Don't feel too bad about missing the tricks. Pipsy is actually the SLOWEST character in the game, not the fastest. She has the best acceleration and steering though, but she gets the least benefit from a blue balloon. Getting that wizpig skip with her was impressive.
Depends on the game. It's not like there's a single set of rules for each games, and every game MUST follow those rules. The runners that play the games define the rules that everyone follows. It's mainly based on what way is fun and interesting to run for the game. In addition, many games have different categories that either have stricter rules, or more lax rules. Mario Galaxy is one that stands out in regards to the start of the game. There's a very long cutscene at the beginning that cannot be skipped, and a small boss fight. Many runs use a "Standardized" save game that is actually hacked/modified to load the game just after this small intro section. So long as everyone follows this same standard, then its all a fair start. :)
@@yohoki4642 Yep. The DKR community decided a long time ago that using any character, including the 2 unlockable characters (TT and Drumstick) are allowed for pretty much every run. All using a different character would do would make the run slower. You can still do every important trick with every character, it's just slower.
This game is one of those cases where the flag is saved onto your cart no matter if you delete the save file so you can always play as TT after unlocking him. The same is also for Drumstick the Rooster but while Drumstick is the 2nd fastest character is the fastest in the plane and to unlock him you need to get the 4 trophies and 39 gold balloons and then run over a frog with a red crest on it Now you could use the Genie to wipe the flags for the unlocked characters but no one is going to do that as it's like getting rid of the flags to being able to skip cutscenes in Metroid Other M, there is no point when you can just unlock the characters. Sure there could be separate categories with beating the game with specific characters but i don't think they wanna do that since there would not be enough demand for such a thing
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena Yes, that's it exactly. I think it's also important to note that it isn't just DKR that allows unlockables in speedruns and WR attempts, looking at you MKWii/MK8 :D
That's correct. Pipsy has maxed out acceleration and handling, but the lowest top speed. Depending on how you're using Pipsy, that can make her really fast or slow.
Well it’s sad for me to know that I won’t be able to pull off most of the well-known glitches in DKR (since I own a North American v1.0 copy). Didn’t think the game had many differences and game-breaking tricks to break the game even further.
The JP version of DKR is surprisingly cheap to acquire. Over the years it is usually for sale on eBay for maybe $10 USD or less. You can also run JP games in US consoles if you either take out the region lock on the back of the cartridge to swap out to your console's region, or you can remove the region lock inside the console to run both US and JP games in the same console!
When I first ran into the diddy kong racing speedrun it was on twitch, and it was for a race. I was wondering why they didn't have the music on. They turned it on for the viewers because, like, seriously, why would you play this without music lol - the music DOES make it lag but man the music.
Yeah, the music does cause a great deal of lag. However, some top runners choose to keep music on as you can still go plenty fast with all the lag, you just have to know how to adjust to the extra lag. Currently, the All Trophy Races world record has had a long history of needing music off as it's an extremely competitive and tight category. Plus, you don't lose time for turning music off as the run only starts once you select the trophy in Track Select. For Any% and 100%, we have to reset the console in some spots to save time, but resetting the console turns the music back on, which means if you want the music back off you will have to spend some time menuing to turn it off.
You can start any run with any character, including either of the unlockable characters (TT or Drumstick) and that time is not included in the speedrun. A lot of games allow use of unlockables in new speedruns like the later Mario Kart games like Wii or 8 Deluxe. It just depends on the community and the category, as in DKR we do have a category that requires you to start on a fresh state of the cartridge and then unlock everything, which is a 5+ hour run. Hope that cleared things up!
Any character can be used. Using TT just makes the run faster since he has maxed out speed stats. You can do all the tricks with every character, even the slowest ones, of course it just makes the run slower, and since this is a speedrun we want to go as fast as possible.
Modders need to make a post process mod that adds the music back in without game loss e - there are a lot of obvious things that modders could do that makes me think either the community is adverse to it or it's outright difficult
The Decompilation Team for Diddy Kong Racing has actually made a lot of progress in fixing the games code to optimize it for framerate. There is a 30fps mod in the works, as well as an uncapped framerate mod. Although, a lot of the physics code is not designed to handle framerates about 30, so weird things start to happen past 30fps. Here's a vid from runner "Obiyo" playing on the uncapped framerate mod on a real console ruclips.net/video/KwibJLSgrRg/видео.html
There's some weird ground clipping that can happen sometimes in DKR, and in Dino Domain it can happen often if you hold A as you exit the Jungle Falls level. You'll often clip on the door as it's opening which can sometimes put one of your wheels into the ground like that.
Yes. Having 10 extra bananas would give you +25% speed. There is a leaderboard in the DKR community called the "Magic Code Leaderboard" which allows runs of individual levels with any combo of Magic codes to be used. The first track Ancient Lake had been beaten in just 25 seconds with Magic codes!

it is different to play, mainly because the silver coin races are replaced with touch challenges that cannot be sped up and now there are permanent upgrades obtained by collecting rareware coins in the races instead of collecting bananas to go faster, its considerably changed
How in the world did anyone figure this stuff out? Geez! I could never unlock TT or get the second Wizpig race because of the silver coin challenge for Spaceport Alpha. I could never come in first for that one.
There are some tough Silver Coin races. Spaceport Alpha can be pretty hard, also Greenwood Village. Knowing about some of the movement tech in the Plane like holding R to be able to turn tighter and holding or tapping B to turn even sharper can really help out. Also, grabbing a shield in the long laser corridor can help in grabbing the 2 coins in there without getting shot down. As for how we've figured out all this stuff, it comes from doing our best to understand how the game works, how it behaves when we poke at it in weird ways, and how to abuse the way it reacts to stuff, just like most games. The people that find this stuff often have played the game more than any other person in the world, so it makes sense that with that much play time that they're bound to find some of this crazy stuff. After playing for 5 years now, I forget how many thousands of hours I've spent playing DKR, and in that time I've found a bunch of tricks and small time saves just from all my time observing how the game works as well as theory crafting and testing. I truly love this game, it has so much to offer for the single player experience

There is a way to beat the game in less than 5 minutes, though it uses a variation of the Wrong Warp glitch that is only possible in 2-Player mode. It isn't allowed in the normal Any% runs since it makes it a completely different run, but it's still very fun to show off!
Great video! Cool speedrun!
Glad you enjoyed it!
2:08 you can call me one of those people, cause I don't listen to video game audio to watch videos like this 😂
Diddy Did it!
Man, I feel like we could make the route more consistent with some more research into memory manipulation.
If there was a consistent way to get the best RNG then yeah the route would become a bit faster. Sadly, there isn't a way to do it yet. Hopefully it gets figured out one day!
It's so strange, why does that warp exist at all, and why does it behave this way?
@@renakunisaki We're not sure why that loading zone is placed there, most likely the track was changed at one point in development and it was forgotten that it was still there. As for why it behaves differently across different versions, we're also unsure. All we know is what it can do and how we can best use it for speedruns

I hope the split of talking to t.t is called "tttt"
This video just reawakened a memory in me
how can you use TT for a speed run if he is not unlocked at first?
Hope that cleared things up!
very interesting.
speedrunning is always such a very cool and interesting thing to experience.
idk if annyone poitned it out, but the reason speedruner go out of bound with the tier 1 boost is cause you get a t4 boost whenever you use any boost (from items or speed pads) and you ain't holding the A button
I would probaly go crazy tryna figure this all out and I am a patient person but this n new level of patience 😂
"coming down and STOMPING on you, with So Much Force that you FLY UP and over the wall....." like, maybe my friend WASNT just making up sone dumb story, but had some other glitch happen, that he thought 'looked like' Diddy Kong...
the weiredest thing about diddy kong racing is using a boost ablity ( blue baloon) is faster if you let go of the gas button ( green flame ).
Yep, the same if you hit the zippers (boost panels or the ring zippers) letting go of A before hitting them gives you more boost. Very unique!
And mashing the button is faster than holding it, which is actually a glitch.
Awesome video!
Ironically to get the best boosts you have to NOT Press A
3:54- "I thought using Diddy was a good idea..."
Oh, relying on Diddy is never a good idea! ;)
Don't feel too bad about missing the tricks. Pipsy is actually the SLOWEST character in the game, not the fastest. She has the best acceleration and steering though, but she gets the least benefit from a blue balloon. Getting that wizpig skip with her was impressive.
Appreciate it!
If T.T. is an unlockable character, then how do Speedrunners use him for Speedruns? Don‘t speedruns always get started off on a fresh save…?
@ That‘s fair hehe..
Thanks for the clarification
@@yohoki4642 Yep. The DKR community decided a long time ago that using any character, including the 2 unlockable characters (TT and Drumstick) are allowed for pretty much every run. All using a different character would do would make the run slower. You can still do every important trick with every character, it's just slower.
This game is one of those cases where the flag is saved onto your cart no matter if you delete the save file so you can always play as TT after unlocking him. The same is also for Drumstick the Rooster but while Drumstick is the 2nd fastest character is the fastest in the plane and to unlock him you need to get the 4 trophies and 39 gold balloons and then run over a frog with a red crest on it
Now you could use the Genie to wipe the flags for the unlocked characters but no one is going to do that as it's like getting rid of the flags to being able to skip cutscenes in Metroid Other M, there is no point when you can just unlock the characters.
The tas of lapping Wizpig looks crazy.
Wait, Pipsy is the second fastest after T.T.?
I thought her stats were acceleration focused.
That's correct. Pipsy has maxed out acceleration and handling, but the lowest top speed. Depending on how you're using Pipsy, that can make her really fast or slow.
Would you get better race times if u had a ram pack installed?
The Expansion Pack to increase the N64 memory from 4MB to 8MB doesn't do anything in DKR sadly
It did get that DS port, but it deserves an actual sequel
Putting some DK64 in my DKR64 game? How dare you?
You’re welcome ?
I wish they would make a new Pdiddy Kong racing:(
They're working on the baby oil DLC with Drake, Oprah and Jaime Foxx again.
We'll soon be on our way on an *unforgettable adventure.*
*Extreme* /s
Me too :(
I'm guessing you're not a fan on Pannenkoek's "A" button challenge?
I haven’t seen any of those videos, but I love the concept!
Reminder
Diddy Kong racing ds exists
Diddy Kong Racing will never die
DKR 4 life
Why is the TT unlock time not included in the Speedrun time? As that IS a requirement to complete the run.
Modders need to make a post process mod that adds the music back in without game loss
e - there are a lot of obvious things that modders could do that makes me think either the community is adverse to it or it's outright difficult
5:37 what causes that to happen?
There's some weird ground clipping that can happen sometimes in DKR, and in Dino Domain it can happen often if you hold A as you exit the Jungle Falls level. You'll often clip on the door as it's opening which can sometimes put one of your wheels into the ground like that.
Didn’t know Diddy had his own racing game
The best racing game out there
Liked only for the banana promo
Interesting! got me subbed
Appreciate it!
I know that cheats codes aren't allowed, but would the cheat to start with 10 bananas make a lower speedrun time?
Yes, you'd be faster and wouldn't need to detour to get bananas
1:30 DAMN IT
Love this game
This is still the best racing Game ever made
what about donkey okong race?
Never heard of it
That project that was supposed to be on the gamecube shut down after some time forgot the reason why.
Now, they just have to do the same thing in mirror mode.
Mr Ponytail is the world record holder, but can he beat me at the dini domain egg hunt???
Only one way to find out

Go bananas!
awh usually gamer humor on youtube is genuinely concerning/revolting but the little sponsored by bananas thing was just really wholesome and made me smile lol.
lol why is gamer humour concerning?
@@pressaTD as an autistic person--it's always genuinely cringe, so try-hard, and NEVER funny at all. very bizarre trope
important distinction--I'm talking about youtube gamers where they pepper in beats and jokes that just totally detract and make us look embarrassing lol
I have always said that Tricky from DKR is Tricky from SFA. It has to be.
Wait, is the DS version not a sequel?
It’s just a remake
@@pressaTD ah, ok.
it is different to play, mainly because the silver coin races are replaced with touch challenges that cannot be sped up and now there are permanent upgrades obtained by collecting rareware coins in the races instead of collecting bananas to go faster, its considerably changed
Just beat this game last week again
Ohhh, Banana!
How in the world did anyone figure this stuff out? Geez! I could never unlock TT or get the second Wizpig race because of the silver coin challenge for Spaceport Alpha. I could never come in first for that one.
I honestly have no idea lol
Fucking love this game
Do version count?
The version of the game matters yes. I explain how at the beginning and some other parts of the video
