Damn this is a blast from the past. I'm talking about Mike not the game. I haven't seen any videos in months. God it's good to be back. Like a warm blanket. A warm, fowl mouthed, rage filled blanket.
Mike, I totally get your love for Zelda (it's my favorite game franchise of all time), but I crack up every time you talk about games like Willow or any other being cryptic, completely forgetting just how cryptic Zelda (especially the first NES one) really is. You have been playing it your whole life so you know all secrets, etc., but just try to remember prior to "knowing." If you played Legend of Zelda for the first time now, you would be saying the same or similar things as you are about Willow. Love the videos and keep up the good work.
That’s the most pissed off angry moment in history where a player dies, just like “Dick Tracy” for the NES did when they lose a life, the game ends, but it starts with only one life.
Yeah, this was a hard one I think it took me about the same amount of time. My biggest issue was the caves and the last 2 castles. All the rooms and hallways looked almost the same as I was going in circles.
Thanks for playing willow! I've always loved it, despite everyone always telling me how much it sucks. I love farming xp, and this game scratches the itch. This game and the original final fantasy let you zone into leveling up your character so well. I love the music here too.
For future reference the best grinding spot is the three blue crabs by the "bar" and just use the "Thunder" magic. Each use costs use 20 MP and it kills the crabs instantly for 300 exp. Just keep doing that and you level up in no time.
I remember loving this game and beating it as a kid. My biggest issue with it today is it has to be the most grind-heavy game in the NES library. I don't mind grinding for experience, but it does get really tedious after a while on this one. Mind you, I still love the game and have some great nostalgia for it.
Food for thought Grey zombies shoot 5 balls Green zombies shoots 10 balls Red zombies shoots 15 balls And you can kill them with a thunder in a jippy or the Devileye sword
The part when Willow is locked in a cell. I don't know how you managed to solve that in less than a minute. MY sister had this game and spent weeks trapped at that point. She finally asked me to go to her house to try and solve it. I used everything in the inventory, hit every wall, talked to the prisoner dozens of times, spent ten minutes hacking away at the cell door, and nothing. I was walking towards the prisoner again when Willow's friends busted through the wall. This was about 30 minutes after I was put in the cell. The best I can figure is that there is some sort of pattern to walking around the cell and hitting the wall that activates the rescue. Otherwise the game activates it automatically after 30 minutes. Most people give up after 10 minutes, so never got past that point. You are just lucky you randomly found the pattern. ( or perhaps CAMCOM fixed the game for later releases? Or was that an emulator with a fix? )
I honestly don't know what it is about Willow that really appeals to me but it's not nostalgia because I never had this as a kid. I think I just like 8 bit RPGs in general and this game is underrated.
As a child, I couldn't defeat Bavmorda because I forgot to transform Finn Raziel. This results in the cane repelling, but not actually doing damage to her beyond the first shot.
Also, this is the first game I ever beat (with cheat codes). It blew my mind. I didn't know video games had endings. I was used to Pacman, Missle Command, or Centipede, which loop. I assumed Super Mario also looped until I beat this game. It changed my outlook on games.
I think the deal with the boot thing is that the character who has the boots was talking about the same thing as the person you talked to before you went back to him. I think they were talking about the same location or person. It's a very thin connection there.
Wonder if the reason a lot of the screens look the same, was due to the limited nature of the NES carts / ROM size. I'm order to make the world seem huge, they just reused a lot of screens
It makes a lot more sense to build up your experience by defeating enemies that you just naturally come across. Skipping all of them and then just going skull crazy is the boring alternative.
I had this game as a kid, because I loved the movie so my mom got it for me. It had fun enough gameplay but I never got anywhere in it, and this stream is absolute proof I was wise not to waste much time trying. I never got anywhere in Zelda 2 either until I was an adult, but it was way more fun so once I had that, Willow mostly collected dust. Zelda saved me from this game, Zelda 1 was my second game after Mario and duck hunt, and I'll always be thankful for that. Good luck ever beating this, but whether you do or not I'll watch all the streams in solidarity, I put at least as many hours into it as well. The possible inspiration it gave to LTTP is just payment for it being a far worse version of Zelda to begin with.
Modern gamers are spoiled - this is how real games used to be and we didn't bitch about niceties like a map or reminders about which shit we had equipped. If you were there when this came out then you know that games were intriguing and required you to really think - I think this was the only game where I had to sit down and draw a map meticulously which added to the whole thing. This game actually requires investment and for the time, as noted, it was novel to receive an ending other than something like 'a winner is you!'. Of course it's okay to point out Willow's flaws, but so long as they come with the caveat that it was as good as it got at the time. My ten cents.
BTW I was something like 6 or 7 years old when I reached Bavmorda (though I really don't recall the ending) - y'all should seriously be able to get through a 'difficult' title like this without a guide / the internet... Sadly, lack of skill on behalf of American gamers led to so few games, especially RPGs, making it stateside, and those which did were nerfed more often than not. Shameful, really.
Hey, Mike, just wanted to let you and everyone on the channel know that apparently Analogue is doing pre-orders for the nt noir tomorrow morning 8 a.m. I know there's a lot of us classic gamers so thought I would pass it along. great content is always by the way, love your videos keep up the good work!
You don't pay attention at all to what the NPCs are telling you. The old man in the red cave gives you the whole story of Tir Asleen when you first see him, but you just repeatedly hit A and don't read. Then when you see the lady in the purple cave and she says you can't get near Tir Asleen the bridge is cursed, you flip out and say the game is cryptic. It is a little cryptic yes, but you don't pay attention to anything the NPCs are saying. Multiple times you complained about things that were already explained to you earlier in the game by NPCs. Read what the characters are telling you instead of spamming A bro.
Mike Matei lol. I basically said that you didn't read quite a bit of the NPCs stories and just hit A. Then complained it was cryptic. It is of course cryptic like any 80s NES game mostly. However a lot of the story is given by reading the conversations with NPCs.
Mike Matei unless you mean you don't want to read the convos in game. That's fine, I get it., it was a bitch back then constantly scrolling and reading all the convos to advance. Just we can't complain about the game if we don't read everything.
Mike Matei By the way at 4:51(hours) of your stream, you specifically asked RUclips viewers to explain that part. That is why I did, so don't be mad at me.
I just watched Willow for the first time. An ok movie, not memorable, but pretty decent. The game actually takes quite a bit from the movie for an NES game. Willow doesn’t have a sword and doesn’t fight anyone in the film other that the witch at the end, but otherwise there are lots of characters and places in the game.
I’m only like an hour or so in and you don’t heal enough, the game won’t be so hard and you won’t get so frustrated lol. It’s kinda frustrating. Enjoying the video though. 👍🏻👍🏻
Interestingly enough, I know all about phonographs and Buster Keaton but the only thing I know about Willow is that I wanna punt Warwick Davis through the uprights
Was always fascinated by this one, it's a great game that is held back by a few design decisions. I never got very far into it, it's great skimming through watching Mike light this one up.
Haven't seen the whole thing, but there was a Nintendo Power Club poster map of the game. Not sure if it has the whole world map as I've only seen one side of the poster, but it existed.
Took me a week to watch the whole stream! It was a lot of fun watching you beat this game. Not that it matters, but you missed a lower end shield and a few items.
I can totally understand the "gamecube-wii-thing" cause i do the same with playstation! And mike, think about doing CD-emulation on one of your cubes! Its like an everdrive! Greetings from germany
I highly recommend playing Pikmin with pointer controls. So much more intuitive and overall easier to control. I played the Wii editions of Pikmin 1 and 2.
I just spent the last three days watching this entire livestream. Have to say, not disappointed in the least. Glad I never played this. In the meantime, Mike, maybe beat Crystalis. Have been playing that beyond your initial stream and am truly enjoying it.
I remember a run-through fighting General Kael. I charged, running to the right of the screen, stuck my sword out and he just IMPALED himself with haste. Did not always work in subsequent runs as a kid. And man, I took special joy in killing those dudes that turned you into a pig. HA! WHO IS BACON NOW!
I have never played this game as a kid since I had more snes games also i didnt know this game existed. I really liked watching this stream, reminds me of Illusion of Gaia. I would play Willow now thanks to you.
Cartoons that weren't that great but had awesome intro songs : Galaxy Rangers Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors Bucky O'Hare Spartacus and the Sun beneath the sea The Mysterious Cities of Gold ... Can't think of anymore ...
Watched all this stream on background, really fun! This is ok game but without grinding it would be much better. What I like about Beyond Oasis and why it's one of the best action-RPG for me - there are no levels or experience. You can find good weapons and some healing potions which makes game easier but you can beat it without any of this stuff if you know the game. You know. Like Zelda.
It's in interesting game but it's definitely tough. I got far but I have not had the pleasure in beating it yet. I've had it since it came out as I was a big fan of the movie. Awesome job with the vid Mike 👍
You realize when you are snapping a picture of the password that the picture file size is close to the same size of the whole game's ROM on the original cartridge?
For a movie based game released when it was it seems pretty decent, remember there was no in game map in Zelda 1 and 2 except the dungeons in 1 and I don't think it was much if at all more cryptic then Zelda 1 and 2 and probably less cryptic then Castlevania 2, granted that's not setting the bar high lol.
Mike was watching the old monogram bela lugosi films, instead of watching dragonball when he was growing up
Absolutely
hey Mike can u pass the popcorn? u(^ XXX)? 🍿👀
Damn this is a blast from the past. I'm talking about Mike not the game. I haven't seen any videos in months. God it's good to be back. Like a warm blanket. A warm, fowl mouthed, rage filled blanket.
Best channel ever,i love Mikes long-playing
The graphics for the character and enemy sprites and the movement effects in the trees when you enter battle is pretty nice for NES
4:37:30 "Some folks call it a sling blade. I call it a Kaiser sword"
Mike, I totally get your love for Zelda (it's my favorite game franchise of all time), but I crack up every time you talk about games like Willow or any other being cryptic, completely forgetting just how cryptic Zelda (especially the first NES one) really is. Fair assessment except one thing... the manual it came with was very detailed
@@nunyabizness6376 and epic art work I absolutely love everything that came with that magical gold cart
Seeing Mike break and on the verge of tears is the funniest things I’ve seen all year. Better than the new AVGN episodes. 5:49:30 & 5:52:43
Best reaction 2:32:16
That’s the most pissed off angry moment in history where a player dies, just like “Dick Tracy” for the NES did when they lose a life, the game ends, but it starts with only one life.
This took me months to beat as a kid. Especially with the asinine password system. But I did it and the accomplishment was worth it.
Rented it as a kid and after 10 min. i returned it, way too hard and the password save definitely was ridiculous.
Yeah, this was a hard one I think it took me about the same amount of time. My biggest issue was the caves and the last 2 castles. All the rooms and hallways looked almost the same as I was going in circles.
There was nothing more disheartening than realizing you wrote the password down wrong 😂😂
Thanks for playing willow! I've always loved it, despite everyone always telling me how much it sucks. I love farming xp, and this game scratches the itch. This game and the original final fantasy let you zone into leveling up your character so well. I love the music here too.
41:30 Mike's horse routine
So glad you put these vods on RUclips. Makes work bearable. Keep up the hilarious impressions bro!
Amen.
For future reference the best grinding spot is the three blue crabs by the "bar" and just use the "Thunder" magic. Each use costs use 20 MP and it kills the crabs instantly for 300 exp. Just keep doing that and you level up in no time.
I was awaiting the conclusion to this!😀
I tried watching on twitch but the ads every 10 mins pissed me off. Thanks for the upload.
Love this set of videos, you make grinding through this ridiculously repetitive game very entertaining! Lots of laughs as always.
I remember loving this game and beating it as a kid. My biggest issue with it today is it has to be the most grind-heavy game in the NES library. I don't mind grinding for experience, but it does get really tedious after a while on this one. Mind you, I still love the game and have some great nostalgia for it.
Dragon warrior 2 would like to have a word with you.
Food for thought
Grey zombies shoot 5 balls
Green zombies shoots 10 balls
Red zombies shoots 15 balls
And you can kill them with a thunder in a jippy or the Devileye sword
Strength literally changes with different swords you can see the figure. Wing is the strongest once upgraded in the castle

The only reason I'm gonna play Willow is so I can fight a blue, 2 headed Goro in a diaper @1:28:10

Mike and Willow for President 2020
I knew you could do it!
Always good to see Mike stream:)
Glad you decided to continue play Mike!
Devils eye sword had 104 strength. You missed it Mike. 33:52.
*update*
disregard - that sword only works on specific enemies
5:49:39 my favorite!
this is so sick. proud of you to play this game on camera
This game is on my wishlist! Have not seen it out in the wild yet. Also, totally underrated movie. Love the Willow movie.
I’m waiting for this to turn into Yoshis Island 2 with a screaming baby
An MS-DOS stream would be nice. This game is my favorite Ron Howard associated project. ( Here come the arrested development fanboys).

Wow, this game was the precursor to Link to the Past in terms of the design and whatnot.
@Pepe TheChan Yes. It kind of is.

Was waiting for this. This, kings knight, Bart's nightmare, and wizard of oz were classic streams
Purple caves, all in my brain
Lately things they don't seem the same
Actin' funny, but I don't know why
Excuse me while I kiss the sky
Thank you Mike for the Nintendo goodness and your humor
i had forgotten about this game been many years since i played it seems ahead of its time
lol you talk about the "happy birthday", today is my birthday.
Happy burfady
Beat this game almost 30 years ago. I was 8. It took me so damn long. It had to be months. I remember it well though. It was so hard. Good job.
You don't pay attention at all to what the NPCs are telling you. The dislikes from that person couldn't beat the game
Another great playthrough with Mike Matei
Isn't there a warp code with the 2nd controller
This game would actually be fun if you just looked up a map.

This whole stream was hilarious man.
Beat this as a kid when it first came out, ahh good times....

I love that you checked to see if Nintendo Power even went for the old man's witches shoes. 😂
I just spent the last three days watching this entire livestream. Have to say, not disappointed in the least. Glad I never played this. In the meantime, Mike, maybe beat Crystalis. Have been playing that beyond your initial stream and am truly enjoying it.
2:05:09
LMAO. Just as funny as Erin's reactions.
Chakan the Forever Man is not that bad actually, just nearly impossible to beat it and you have to learn all the effects of the potions.
@5:52:52 WTF chat moment LMAO!
I still think the Willow sprite looks like a sprite of Breath if the Wild Link, with the blue tunic.
Hell yea mike , great work on this one , I watched the whole thing G
Once again, game is pretty great, music drove me nuts as a kid. Reminds me of a less intense version of Crystalis.
634 15:56 some solid advice
James And Mike 2020!
I have never played this game as a kid since I had more snes games also i didnt know this game existed. I really liked watching this stream, reminds me of Illusion of Gaia. I would play Willow now thanks to you.
Dude this is o e of my favorite nes game. I liked Faxanadu too but never beat it.
I beat faxanadu. It was about as mediocre as this one
oh man i played this game a lot when i was a kid
I show you a GameCube experience!!! Lol
Cartoons that weren't that great but had awesome intro songs :
Galaxy Rangers
Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
Bucky O'Hare
Spartacus and the Sun beneath the sea
The Mysterious Cities of Gold
... Can't think of anymore ...
Mike is playing the Wizard of Oz!!!
Watched all this stream on background, really fun! This is ok game but without grinding it would be much better. Willow is pretty good for an nes rpg
It's in interesting game but it's definitely tough. I got far but I have not had the pleasure in beating it yet. I've had it since it came out as I was a big fan of the movie. Awesome job with the vid Mike 👍
"Ill probably be doing some grinding on this stream"... We weren't that lucky.
That was awesome
Password systems in the age of cell phones aren't as bad
true
Can't hate on Mike for wanting a break after wizard of Oz lol
Awesome long play, Mike! For another long play episode, try Getsu Fūma Den (by Konami) next time.
You realize when you are snapping a picture of the password that the picture file size is close to the same size of the whole game's ROM on the original cartridge?

Dont know where/when this rant starts, somewhere around here... But im dying.......
