Great vid as usual. Some excellent tips. I told u I was struggling with the inferno hence why I chose to skip it but your hanging low strat makes for a much easier time. Great tip. The steelbeaks I couldn't work out a timing for they are a nightmare tho I first one is an excellent place to farm an extra life as u get 5000 points each time and he infinitely respawns, you just stay behind him. If u die u get the 1up anyway
Thanks, man! I didn't think the Inferno was too bad, but the second half of the Snakes is a nightmare. That's the more compelling reason to use the warp, IMO. Cool tip about the Steelbeaks! Those guys don't look dangerous, but will totally wreck your day.
Bro you are the Bob Ross of video games. You make all of this look so easy that anybody can do it. But having owned this game since it came out I only have nightmares. Never got past level 3. Thanks for showing what the rest of the game looks like via playthrough session.
You owe it to yourself to try it now. It is difficult but well worth the effort. I recently did it about 3 months ago. Took me about 3 months of trial and error but I figured it out. THis was before this video. This video had alot more tips and tricks then I knew about.
I think I have PTSD from playing Battletoads back in the early 90's. Such a brutal game. Watching this play-through though I realize just how impressive this game is from a technical stand point. The graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay itself (as brutal as it is) has tons of variety and creative ideas. The music rocks too. Truly one of the greatest games of the 8-bit era.
I'm 40 and haven't played this game since I was around ten, yet the instant you got to the speeder bike section, a combo of music and colors gave me a sense memory panic attack. I remember this game made me think I was bad at video games. New games come with limited edition skins, NES games came with ptsd and a failure complex.
Battletoads isn't just a game that you can learn about and then beat. It legitimately takes a great deal of concentration and fantastic hand-eye coordination. Great game, but I was lousy at it growing up. After beating the bikes, I remember thinking the game wouldn't get any tougher--and it definitely did.
There is a shortcut in the 4th snake pit room you missed. It skips the final hardest part! When you’re on the 4th snake (yellow and red) ride it to the top of the screen. Wait until near the end of the snake and then jump way over to the right. It takes you right to the exit!
Been working on this game for the last month, making incremental progress day-by-day. Literally, many of my playthroughs would see me getting one obstacle or one jump further than my last effort. The levels got easier and easier, though. Today, after God only knows how many tries, I beat the Dark Queen. This game has earned its reputation as one of the hardest games on the NES. Thanks for this excellent guide!
something i've noticed with the turbo tunnel. if you don't die, the changes in the music in the bike part actually feels like it "cues" the obstacles. I love this level a lot and after playing it so many times I feel it was intentional.
A couple notes not mentioned. 10:12 When collecting 1UPS, look for the 1up shadow before jumping. Jump and place your shadow over the 1UP shadow to make sure you get it. Same for anything using a sudo 3D world such as the enemies, floating walls or ramps. At 36:25 those fans can be destroyed with the stick if you still have it. The yellow gassers can be busted too. It gives you a nice breather where you don't need to worry about anything. 46:03 When racing the giblet, you can hit him to turn him around. When the hole is at the side, I like to headbutt the giblet over the hole where he will hit the wall, turn around and land on the platform again forcing him to run all the way back and forth again as you fall down the hole. Run to the next hole and repeat. As long as you keep doing it, it will keep the giblet with you instead of it getting ahead.
This was exactly what I was looking for. One extra thing I might add, is that you can make small skip in level 4. When you go under the walls the shell is pounding up, the game spawns the next set ahead of you, despawning the ones you just passed. Backtracking and with a careful jump down in the pit where the exit is, you can get to exit the level sooner. Prevents you getting squashed in the end by another set of walls and a spiky shell in a tricky spot.
I had this back in the 90s when i was a kid. I beat this game back then and even today it's still a challenge. Snake rattle and roll was one of my favorites as well. I didn't have strategy guides and still figured things out through continuous play. The snake stage was my fav in battletoads.
So this is what battle toads level 4 looks like. Never seen it in my life. Always gave up at level 3. Your walk through are very nice keep it up please.
Awesome and very detailed tutorial. Thank you! Sadly there is no warp/shortcut for the stage with that giant ball chasing you. I did not know about that 2nd player continue trick. That'll help a lot for sure 👍
Yeah, that ball is ruthless! Continue trick really helped my first few times through the game. You really just need some lives to get practice on those late game levels.
I was very young when I was playing this game and it was really difficult for small child. I remember managed after countless of hours to reach to the final tower stage, but never beat it. It's a shame I was so close till the end. Thank you for your video. Nostalgia :)
I have just stumbled upon this channel of yours and started going through your videos and I have to say that this content is just amazing. Like, it is right up my alley. It reminds me a bit of those old "How to Beat" type of VHS tapes from the 80/90s but these are way more thorough and actually take you through the whole thing while revealing all kinds of cool trivia along the way. It's kinda surreal. Had these videos been released back when I was a kid, I can tell it's the kind of stuff I would have watched on repeat, even if I had never played the games in question. This will definitely be one of the channels I'll keep a closer look at in the future. As for Battletoads, I didn't own it myself back in the day but I did have a friend who had it and we would sometimes play it but like you said in your video, like many other kids we could never get past the Turbo Tunnel part. It's crazy to think that developers back then would purposely create so many cool levels and technically impressive gimmick, only to make the early game so cruelly hard that many players would be lucky to even see half of it. One funny piece of trivia I recently learned of was that just before you kick enemies with your big boot, the game will pause for a second. I always thought that was just solely for dramatic effect but it is in fact the game loading a sound sample to play for the kick. Fantastic video, mate. And gosh darn impressive to see deathless run with a maxed-out score to boot. Maybe one day I'll be able to at least complete it too. One can dream xD Can't wait to see what game you'll be tackling next. If I may suggest a really great, yet underappreciated game, I would pick Ufouria: The Saga from Sunsoft. It's a really cool Metroidvania kinda game. I recently worked on a hack for it, so I've had to go through it a couple of times as a result and it's definitely the kind of game where a guide could be handy on your first go. Either that or Bionic Commando :)
Thanks a lot, Captain N! I really appreciate all of the kind words. Cool fact about the game loading the sound sample - I didn't know that! I really like Uforia, I played through for the first time last year. I'll definitely put it on my list. And I'll let you in on a secret. Bionic Commando is the next video.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames That's awesome! Bionic Commando is another game where I recently worked on a large translation hack and uncovered a lot of cool stuff in the code. The most interesting thing about the game is probably the differences between the US and Japanese versions. And I'm not just referring the censoring of the Nazi symbols and story. There are in fact a bunch of gameplay and secret-based changes. Like a super-secret hidden room that'll grant you the ability to activate a shield at any time (if I remember correctly) However, that whole room was removed from the western version. There was also a hostage you could interrogate and in the Japanese version, if you attacked him 100 times with your bionic arm, he would give you all the items in the game early on. This was also removed. There are a whole bunch of little subtle changes like these. In one of the early neutral areas in the game, you can also swing under some barriers blocking you with a well executed swing by grabbing the ground under them and swing right under. It'll give you a special message in the Japanese version from the soldier on the other side. Not so in the western version, although, you can still perform the swing. I believe the Japanese version was also more picky about you having to use specific weapons to destroy the various barriers in the game, where the US version will let you use a bigger range in most cases. But I digress and apologize for this wall of random localization trivia. I will look forward to seeing the upcoming video :)
I definitely picked up the Japanese version after reading a bit about the differences. I understand why they got rid of all the Swastikas, but I was very surprised at all the changes to the game itself. I have no idea why they made some of these changes - it seems like they put a lot of effort into changing stuff. It's fascinating.
I beat this game multiple times as a kid both with and without warping. This is what happens when you are poor and have more time than money. It took me forever to get past chapter 11 cause I couldn’t figure out how to gain separation on the curves. I never did figure it out. I played it so much I eventually did it by just instinct with timing when to turn. For chapter 8 you can safely destroy all those stupid gassers with stick or ram attack. Makes it way easier climbing up the shaft. Great video on truly one of the hardest NES games ever made. I bought it for the colorful cover and thought I was going to get a TMNT arcade beat em up clone except with hilarious toads. Then was sodomized by the Turbo Tunnel and realized what I had gotten myself into buying the game. Thanks for the memories. 😅
That speeder bike level will go down in history as one of the hardest levels of all time. Even I hadn't beaten it in almost 30 years. I loved when they crossed over with Double Dragon. Great game, and full of humor and action. Good to see Battletoads getting some love. Haven't tried the new incarnation yet. Looks fun though.
Maybe not "One of the hardest levels of all time", but definitely "One of the hardest EARLY levels of all time". This felt more like a level 10 than 3!
Might not look like it, but the buzz ball level make the Turbo Tunnel feel like a tutorial. Every level except the surf city is harder than that one IMO.
Very cool to see your channel taking off with the focus that it has... with your appreciation for tackling difficult challenges, I think you could appreciate how hard it would be to run 🏃 while playing through a game at the same time. In a wellness & gaming effort, I tackled NG, Contra, Battletoads, and Ghosts N Goblins while jogging behind our homemade NES bike lol. Nice golden retriever too lol we have 2 of them now, a lighter Irish cream that’s 10 months old and our newest is 2 months old, more of the classic darker color like yours :)
I can't even imagine trying to beat some of those games while jogging! That's awesome! We have one of those Pelotons, so that's how I usually work out, aside from walking the dog! A two month old golden puppy is soooo cute, and a bundle of energy! My wife wants to get a second golden soon, so my little buddy might have a dog friend in the future.
This was a fantastic video. I recently only beat this game a few months ago. It took me 3 months to learn everything myself and come up with my own strategies. This is by FAR the hardest game I have ever played. I am 45 years old and when I rented this as a kid I only got past the turbo tunnel level only 2 or 3 times. This game takes patience, practice, memorization, and determination. Even with your video it is going to be difficult for people to implement. You really have to analyze what's going on and take notes on how the levels are structured and the "mechanics" and "limitations" of the game design. The plane level still give me nightmares. Again though, your video quality and tips are very impressive.
I got past the Turbo Tunnel... about one time in five. I managed to beat the rat race... once. But the clinger wringer ended me. Bravo on making it all the way through this face-punchingly hard game.
I had no intention of playing this game when it came out, and I still don't, yet here I am thoroughly entertained by your video. You have a new subscriber and a like. Thanks!
A few tricks I learned from my playthrough, or other let's plays. - Karnath's Lair room 4. Ride the yellow/pink snake up, then jump across the 3 spike balls to the exit (or hit the spikes, lose a life but clear the stage if you touch the exit while dead). Or, stay at the top, jump across at the last moment (the head of the snake will be up on the other side, and you can walk to the exit). - Keep spamming Pause to give yourself more reaction time. It's the only way I could beat Volkmire and Clinger Winger..... :( - Intruder Excluder. The stick can destroy the gassers and the fans. - Terra Tubes. Normally for the underwater wheels, you're supposed to hover over spikes while a wheel passes over you. Keep spamming attack to stay in place. - Rat Race, 3rd race. When the rat tries to overtake you on the straight section, push attack to headbutt him forward. Hopefully he'll bounce off the wall and turn around. Positioning is key (knocking him down the hole instead would be catastrophic). With this strat, you don't have to be nearly perfect.
I really enjoy your narration style bro! It's relaxing to me and helps me calm down when I need to wind down from all the crazy difficult video games :)
I never saw the snakes AFTER the one at 29:00 mins because you can jump to the exit pretty easily from there via the red/yellow snake when it's high near those spikes. I guess that part may be a lot easier than you showed us. I beat the game several times in my childhood and still learned new things by watching your video. Cheers & thanks!
Much like your Kid Icarus video this was a work of art and I was able to watch this in one sitting. I've watched several other play throughs of Battletoads but this is the first one that provides a detailed explanation of the level mechanics like the Clinker Winger and Volmire's Inferno stages. Awesome video.
Hi I live in UK and I have just subscribed to your channel. I had Battletoads back then and it was and is notoriously difficult. But I love the sound effects, especially when you punch and kick, that bone crunching sound is SSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO SATIFYING!!
Awesome well researched content. Your turtles video popped up in my recommendations for no reasons I could think of. So hopefully that means the algorithm is starting to do right by you and start seeing the views you deserve
Thanks!! Good to know how you found me - I suspect a lot of people find my channel through the TMNT video. Nobody seems to really know how the algorithm works, so I'm just glad I'm showing up!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames That's how I found you, too - though I was specifically searching for TMNT Let's Play vids. It's really hard to find one where the player knows what they'r doing AND isn't laced with excessive amounts of profanity. (Which, I might add, is probably my favorite thing about your channel.)
Man, this vid is awesome... I have beaten some of the hardest games (Mega Drive's Kid Chameleon - using no continues; Fantasia; Nes Contra, Megaman 1, 2...but battletoads is completely different. You really gotta master every single detail of it. Back in the early 90's I could get to the rat race with all lives and continues. But despite all my effords I could never beat the 3rd rat. Level 8 tip: you can use the stick to destroy the gassers and suckers (36:03; 36:10; 36:24 to 36:34 and 36:40)...it helps a lot
love this game. bought it off my friend in middle school for $10. just some additional tips: Wookie Hole: the grey electrodes at the end can be easily avoided by moving to the center of the bottom of the screen and not moving, rather than swinging back and forth and risking damage Surf City: if you run too far forward after taking out the Tall Walkers, Big Blag will "scare" your toad and you'll miss out on the flies Volkmire's Inferno: eff this stage!! use the warp in the Karnath's Lair Intruder Excluder: you can kill Gassers with a charge attack ONLY IF you're holding a stick (not sure about the ones higher than ground level though e.g. 36:43) the trick to getting under the cog in Terra Tubes (41:31) and the trick to take out the Giblet in Rat Race (44:35) is brilliant.
Thanks, Jinxx! I've never really been brave enough to try to kill a gasser, but I can see how that could be useful in a couple spots! Glad you enjoyed the video!
i've only made it to the tower climb and thats with shortcuts and no toadcode! now maybe i will be able to beat the game for once! thanks for the great walkthrough! u got my sub :>
Honestly, GameGenie is a good tool for a game that's this difficult. It helps to practice the later levels, and once you're familiar you can go back and play it without GG. I personally used it to practice Clinger Wringers a ton of times before I was able to beat the game for the first time.
I could never finish thus game when I was a kid and my tolerance for very hard video games has dropped to 0 as a 34yr old adult with two kids. but I finished it through you Lol. Thanks for the great video.
I'm on a quest to 1cc battletoads, you have no idea how helpful this video is to me, the rat race skip being the most useful one! I'd like to add a tip to clinger winger, basically just abusing the pause button since I don't have much reflexes on me. It's a simple but useful trick, when you're about to make a turn, pause at the right moment, press the direction you're going then unpause. Just keep pausing for every turn and you'll be able to reach the end with ease. Just be sure to pause at the exact moment your toad is making the turn
Theres actually a quicker and easier way to finish the 4th room of Karnath's Lair (stage 6). If you climb the yellow-pink snake to the top, when he moves right, you can run and jump to the right over the spikes at the top and fall into the exit.
On Clinger-Winger, don't be afraid to use a controller with a slow motion feature (rapid pause/unpause), or if you're using a regular controller, pause RIGHT as you hit a corner, hit the button for the direction you're about to turn into, unpause, and you'll go that much faster.
My childhood. Oh, how many hours wasted until I nailed this game. I played it so many times I was able to consistently beat it with 0-2 deaths. Good times.
Excellent and Nostalgic video for me. Long ago in the 90's, I discovered how to take advantage in Clinger-Winger if you pause exactly when your toad is in the middle of the turn. With the game paused, you can arrange D-Pad to the correct direction in the way your device has to go. Do this and so you can acumulate space between the Buzz Ball and your toad. On stage 8 and 10 you can smash those gas blowers with your stick or even with the horn attack. On the snakes, in the last room, you can performate a jump directly from the yellow and pink snake in way to get the outdoor. You probably will die falling upon the spikes but if you jump enough to the right your body will be pushed directly into the exit hole and you will start on the next level. I think beating Battletoads was the most significant achievment of my life after being dad. Greetings from Brazil.
I remember beating this game when I was around 15. I had to try so many levels so many times! I remember trying it as two player and outright giving up. It just seemed even more impossible. The most memorable section for me was the pipe system. I remember playing that one for about 3hrs because I kept dying and respawning before a 1UP. Most rewarding game to beat that I’ve ever played because of how challenging it is.
Watching this video takes me back. Despite the fact I only ever got past level 3 once I still loved the game and thought it was the coolest game on the NES, cant count how many times I rented it from the video store.
Yeah the Rat falls directly onto the bomb after the first one in the PAL one so you cant exploit the trick. Personally I quite like the level now I have it memorized tho one extra tip I think is slightly quicker is to jump forward when your on the white moving girders ie the ones with the Holes in that move left to right. Since your slower when on those because of their movement, you gain a few milliseconds by jumping. I think they may have fixed Sergeant Slaughter too cos that ram stun lock thing doesnt work. At least didnt for me. He always jumps up and squashes you if you ram him the first time. Also great work with the Clinger boss, you completely make him a bitch. I tried to utilise that pick strat but I always screwed it up and found a ram and run approach the safest for me.
Remember epic battles with my dudes in 2p mode, it was a lot of fun. Not to brag, I practiced so many times the Turbo Tunnel that I could pass it with eyes closed due to the music actually timed with each jump or move. But clinger-despair... even on an emulator with save state is so damn IMPOSSIBLE. Did manage to beat the game back in my NES. Big fan of your channel!
Another one I could never beat, usually because my friends and I would end up beating on each other for shits and giggles instead of legit trying to beat it! God, that descent level had us "accidentally" killing each other for hours on end! I have really fond memories of this, even if I only ever saw past the speeder bike level once!
Thank you! You've helped me out with quite a few NES games with Battletoads being one of them. I would have struggled for a long time without you video. I really appreciate your work. ___ If I can, I want to pay it forward and share my own knowledge. So a good strategy for Clinger Wringer is to use both thumbs (or a thumb and forefinger combo). I had trouble with that section not because of memorising the turns or timing, but because I wasn't pressing down firmly enough on the D-Pad when making quick transitions. This meant I lost time. However, when I switched to using two hands on the controller, I never missed a turn and can now beat that stage on my first attempt every time. Yes, every time. I hope that helps someone. I spent so long on that stage.
Man, so many screens in these videos I never saw during my childhood. Just binged watched all your videos, definitely got a new subscriber, plus the cute doggo helped but fantastic videos non the less !!
I’m really not much of a gamer, so I could be way off, but if you’re playing this on the original NES with the original controller and hardware, this has to be one of the top five hardest games ever. This thing was legendary when I was a kid. Nobody could hang with this thing but we all loved it. Imagine trying to play this on an old, rounded television screen that weighed 150 lbs with two controllers that were sticky with dried grape juice, while your parents and your friends parents (who were partying in the living room of the split level whose basement you were playing in) would come in every once in awhile to demand to play, only to get their ass kicked. You had until maybe 10:30 and nobody took any of this video game bullshit seriously. Also, you didn’t have those ergonomic gaming chairs; if it wasn’t a beanbag chair, it was criss cross apple sauce. We didn’t stand a chance but we played it relentlessly.
I absolutely love this game; honestly, it might be my favorite on the NES right behind the Mega Man games. I spent an entire summer a few years back working on familiarizing myself with the game and eventually was able to beat it. I can mostly do it at will these days, so that's kind of a cool trick to have up your sleeve to impress your friends.
Watching this game be beat shows me that I never actually want to put in the effort to beat it myself after only getting to level 4 with so much effort.
I'm surprised that in the Karnath lair in the final room that you didn't show the shortcut to the door. On the yellow and magenta snake, when it comes over its first rise, if instead of jumping down at the last second, you wait for the tail to arrive, if you dash across and jump over the three vertical spikes, you can grab the snake as it comes up behind them over its second hump. Climb to the top of it, and you can just jump to the exit.
Dude great video, love the work and you make it entertaining to watch with all the important information,. After watching this i pulled out my coppy of Battletoads and after 30 years i finally beat it.
38:21 Yes, 21 hits to beat Robo-Manus. 16 for Big Blag 21 for the Dark Queen 23 for General Slaughter 13 for Buzz Ball These hits are measured by head-butt and stick hits. Another tip for Clinger-Winger when riding the wheel for long sections: If one has a good/quick eye in noticing, there is an arrow on the ground on the longer sections not too far before a corner when changing directions. (at least for most of them)
*tip*: in Clinger Winger if you can't do it try to pause the game just after you hit a corner everytime it will make the level be a breeze. When you hit a corner if you are not inhumanly fast to change the direction quickly (or memorize it losing most of your hearts) the game will register that you are pushing the pad the wrong way, so with the pause button you take away that.
43:02 "Make sure you give yourself enough space between you and the spikes to finish off the shark" **proceeds to get ALL UP in them spikes, not get hit, AND kill the shark** You absolute madman! 😱😂
Battle Toads is next to impossible. That being said I will forever stand by the idea that Deadly Towers is the most difficult NES game by far and one of the most difficult of all time on any platform.
The Clinger Winger (level 11) is very easy if you do this trick: PAUSE in every corner and take your time to press de d-pad to the correct way then unpause. Do it in evey turn and you will have an almost perfect (and easy( run.
29:00 : If you just take a leap of faith and jump far to the right, you will usually get "killed", but bounce off of the spike, and right into the "Out" hole. It works most of the time, and it's well worth sacrificing a life. lol
I didn’t realize that you could kill the guy in rat race right at the start. That level has wiped me so many times, I can’t stand it. I still doubt that I will ever beat the last level, but now I will actually be able to attempt it much more consistently. Thank you
That was big for me, because that last course in Rat Race is super rough, and then once you finally finish it, its hard not to choke on the boss. Taking out the rat on the first or second bomb makes it sooo much easier.
SNAKES! Love the video. I am happy to see the channel growing. Keep it up dude... I always learn something interesting. Finally a game harder in the US than Japan.
The game came out in 1991. I remember renting it later that year. Our mom naught the game Christmas of 1992. My brother passed this game in February, 1993. He needed my help to pass the winger clinger. He couldn’t pass it without me. I discovered the pause trick on that level. This is one of my favorite NES games of all time.
It feels really good to figure stuff like that out. I have two brothers, and I was always the one that was really good at games, but they definitely helped out. I remember them helping me win 150cc races in Mario Kart, taking on Rescue Rangers in 2 player mode, and reminding me of where the traps were in StarTropics. Such good times.
As a young kid my best friend and I eventually managed to go through this entire game and beat it... except for Clinger Winger. There's a bug with the frame counter that ensures the second player will always die before he starts moving. So we used a Game Genie to "skip" Clinger Winger, and crushed the last stage. Given the game-breaking bug, to this day I maintain that we legitimately beat Battletoads.
You conjured a memory of mine where my bro came to visit with a bag of magic. We got high as fuck and took on this game. We did manage to make it pretty far but, failed in the end. Had fun nonetheless. Had a bad day at work the next day, though, lol. Thanks for the tips. I played it once by myself a couple years ago and actually beat the speed bike (level 3) section without dying for the first time. Wish I recorded that moment. Anyway, keep kicking ass.

I've literally owned the game for 30 years and never *legitimately* saw the fourth level.
4th level was a legit myth. What we have seen is illuminati secrets
I've figuratively owned it for the same amount of time!!!
Wow bad much?
Literally bad
@@hihihihihello how rude lol
Only took over 3 decades lol but with a little perseverance and your guide, I finally can say I beat Battletoads!!!!!
Bro you are the Bob Ross of video games. You make all of this look so easy that anybody can do it. But having owned this game since it came out I only have nightmares. Never got past level 3. Thanks for showing what the rest of the game looks like via playthrough session.
Thank you, so much! The "Bob Ross of video games" is really high praise!! I love Bob's calm style, and have always felt like that's a great way to be.
You owe it to yourself to try it now. It is difficult but well worth the effort. I recently did it about 3 months ago. Took me about 3 months of trial and error but I figured it out. THis was before this video. This video had alot more tips and tricks then I knew about.
There are no real "game over"s,... just happy little mistakes on your way to victory!
Haha I know right he has a very calming demeanor like Bob Ross. Very asmr like relaxing as well as helpful.😃
exactly what I thought, the soothing voice.
Rare's use of color in this game is phenomenal!
That pause screen beat will forever be stuck in my head
Its in my head now!!
It's like they rhythmically beat some monster's head alltogether)))
It's THE best. I have a booty of it as a ringtone on my phone.
Was stuck on level 7 for the longest now I moved up to level 9. Will be re-watching this video many many times. I'm almost there.
There is a shortcut in the 4th snake pit room you missed. It skips the final hardest part! When you’re on the 4th snake (yellow and red) ride it to the top of the screen. Wait until near the end of the snake and then jump way over to the right. It takes you right to the exit!
That's how bootsy does it.
Your walkthrough are like a modern way of reading Nintendo Power, so fantastic and entertaining and eye opening helpful even to the kid in me.
Thanks, John! I used to read Nintendo Power cover to cover every month - I'm probably heavily influenced by it.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Same!
I was finally able to beat this game (clean, no save states), in no small part thanks to your guide! You are the goat!
something i've noticed with the turbo tunnel. if you don't die, the changes in the music in the bike part actually feels like it "cues" the obstacles. I love this level a lot and after playing it so many times I feel it was intentional.
Cueing music like that is one of Rare's signatures.
That is legitimate display of skill. One life complete of Battletoads! Bravo.
I was very young when I was playing this game and it was really difficult for small child.
I remember managed after countless of hours to reach to the final tower stage, but never beat it. It's a shame I was so close till the end.
Thank you for your video. Nostalgia :)
I just saw 80% of the game for the very first time. Thanks U.Can!
One can dream xD
Can't wait to see what game you'll be tackling next.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames
That's awesome!
Like a super-secret hidden room that'll grant you the ability to activate a shield at any time (if I remember correctly)
However, that whole room was removed from the western version.
This game has alluded me for decades. I can’t believe I’ve actually seen someone beat it! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Literally everything I can do to not giggle like a high schooler at "try to get behind her and do a ram attack."
Giggity.
...I swear I'm an adult.
🤣🤣🤣
Hey, let's face it, we'd ALL like to do that.
@@GMUACW FACTS
That's the only way to win
Haha. I was thinking something similar, but I like your giggity version better.
Being poor makes you tenacious 😂
Honestly, the level of difficulty combined with finite continues is why so many people included myself never bothered to get past the 3rd level
Couldnt agree more. I hope to do Battletoads and Double Dragon at some point.
Awesome video. I can't even begin to describe how much this game terrorized my childhood. I could never make it much further than the turbo tunnel.
41:33 I figured that out as a kid and this is the first time I have ever seen anyone even mention how to avoid that cog. Awesome!
Thanks!
Really fresh and useful approach on playthrough and speedrun videos :) Love the intro too haha
Thank you!!
- Intruder Excluder.
I was already wondering if someone mentioned this. I always use this way and was unaware that there were more snakes after this yellow/pink one
This is probably the only NES game that I never finished once. But hell was it badass.
No doubt!
You owe it to yourself to beat it. I recently did not too long ago. It really is an accomplishment.
If you like this game, try Gotsugoku on NES. It's hard and pretty awesome.
Your channel is the best new channel I’ve found lately and the best thing to come out of 2020
Phenomenal work. I've binged my way through a number of your videos, you really do great work.
I really enjoy your narration style bro! It's relaxing to me and helps me calm down when I need to wind down from all the crazy difficult video games :)
Thanks, Harry!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames you're quite welcome :)
Brutaltoads...thank God the first few levels have great replay value, that's all we ever saw 🐸👀
Much like your Kid Icarus video this was a work of art and I was able to watch this in one sitting. I've watched several other play throughs of Battletoads but this is the first one that provides a detailed explanation of the level mechanics like the Clinker Winger and Volmire's Inferno stages. Awesome video.
your voice and presentation makes this so relaxing to watch.
Hi I live in UK and I have just subscribed to your channel. I had Battletoads back then and it was and is notoriously difficult. But I love the sound effects, especially when you punch and kick, that bone crunching sound is SSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO SATIFYING!!
Thanks! It feels good to blast the bad guys, and that sound effect is a big part of it!
That's how I found him too!
also came from tmnt
Man, this vid is awesome... I have beaten some of the hardest games (Mega Drive's Kid Chameleon - using no continues; Fantasia; Nes Contra, Megaman 1, 2...but battletoads is completely different. You really gotta master every single detail of it. Back in the early 90's I could get to the rat race with all lives and continues. But despite all my effords I could never beat the 3rd rat. Level 8 tip: you can use the stick to destroy the gassers and suckers (36:03; 36:10; 36:24 to 36:34 and 36:40)...it helps a lot
The difficulty in this game is absurd....
Great vid....
you arent kidding! thanks!
The key to beating this game seems to be learning every level by heart.
love this game. bought it off my friend in middle school for $10.
just some additional tips:
Wookie Hole: the grey electrodes at the end can be easily avoided by moving to the center of the bottom of the screen and not moving, rather than swinging back and forth and risking damage
Surf City: if you run too far forward after taking out the Tall Walkers, Big Blag will "scare" your toad and you'll miss out on the flies
Volkmire's Inferno: eff this stage!! use the warp in the Karnath's Lair
Intruder Excluder: you can kill Gassers with a charge attack ONLY IF you're holding a stick (not sure about the ones higher than ground level though e.g. 36:43)
the trick to getting under the cog in Terra Tubes (41:31) and the trick to take out the Giblet in Rat Race (44:35) is brilliant.
Thanks, Jinxx! I've never really been brave enough to try to kill a gasser, but I can see how that could be useful in a couple spots! Glad you enjoyed the video!
God I could never get past the racer level, soooooo f***ing hard
Soooooooooooo hard!
The racer one you had to do like a hundred times to memorize it
Me neither. Maybe I beat it once. Maybe.
i still dont believe this video is real because of that level.
i've only made it to the tower climb and thats with shortcuts and no toadcode! now maybe i will be able to beat the game for once! thanks for the great walkthrough! u got my sub :>
Thanks for the sub! Glad you enjoyed it!
Lolz.. Could only finish this madness with my Gamegenie back in the days.
Only finished it legit 10 years ago.
Don't play stage 12 with infinite lives while drinking. Depression lol
Woah, that would be cool, i have to try that! That last room is rough
Makes sense- if I'm already using the NES Advantage, might as well turn on the slow mo. Good tip!
That's how I always do it!
“ you always want to try to get her from behind” that’s my favorite move too!
Never thought I'd hear the words "duck under the snowman's snowballs"
🤣🤣🤣
Or try to get behind the dark queen and hit her with a ram attack
Beautiful vid, I've gotten to turbo tunnel, then skipped to the end and beat her, this game is the brutalest!
This is worth sharing!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!!
I love these walkthroughs man. You're one of my favorite channels now - up there with Summoning Salt. Looks like I've got hours of content to enjoy!
My childhood. Oh, how many hours wasted until I nailed this game. I played it so many times I was able to consistently beat it with 0-2 deaths. Good times.
That's seriously impressive.
@ thanks. I had nothing else but free time back then 😅
@@IsUserADuckme too, but you had more tolerance for failure than I did!
Great walkthrough. Love these.
Thanks James!
What if I told you this channel is going to be a hit
I hope so!! Thank you!
I am subscribed, and watched about 8 videos already. Hopefully the algo let’s you take off. Very excellent content.
Sounds like they really fixed some exploits for the PAL version. Very interesting!
Big fan of your channel!
make sure you put this on 2x speed because he talks in slowmotion
I actually do have it at 1.25 now that u say it and it deff helps imo
Another one I could never beat, usually because my friends and I would end up beating on each other for shits and giggles instead of legit trying to beat it! God, that descent level had us "accidentally" killing each other for hours on end! I have really fond memories of this, even if I only ever saw past the speeder bike level once!
I remember how crazy difficult this game was! Nice to see your guide... oh! Memories :)
Thank you! You've helped me out with quite a few NES games with Battletoads being one of them. I would have struggled for a long time without you video. I really appreciate your work.
___
If I can, I want to pay it forward and share my own knowledge.
Thanks a lot Bryan! I'm working on some exciting videos, I hope you like them as much!
Great tips...it's been 30 years since I played this for the last time. Never got past the rat race. This video definitively inspired me to try again
Probably one of the least seen ending sequences of the top 100 nes games. I could never get past the hyponotic ball race stage
Truth. If you can get to Clinger Wringers, that's pretty good! That one takes a ton of practice, which is hard to get on the next to last level
Just found this guys channel 15 mins ago and he uploads lol
. Going to start a 4am binge of the channel now
Awesome!!
Same, just found his channel a few hours ago and i saw the TMNT nes video.I watch because i cant beat the dam level
Outstanding man! Subscribed.
Awesome Channel sir.
Epic channel. Your like the final stage of yt retro game videos. Like.. what else could be said xD
Dude great video, love the work and you make it entertaining to watch with all the important information,.
After watching this i pulled out my coppy of Battletoads and after 30 years i finally beat it.
Good job! I know that was a pain in the ass.
Awesome gameplay! Much respect for the hard work man!
38:21 Yes, 21 hits to beat Robo-Manus.
16 for Big Blag
21 for the Dark Queen
23 for General Slaughter
13 for Buzz Ball
These hits are measured by head-butt and stick hits.
43:02
"Make sure you give yourself enough space between you and the spikes to finish off the shark"
**proceeds to get ALL UP in them spikes, not get hit, AND kill the shark**
You absolute madman! 😱😂
46:30 you can also headbutt the rat so he bounces off the wall and walks back one more time and you gain a little bit more time
I think the level with the gear that chases you and the swimming parts with the shark is the most difficult one in the game, personally.
beat this awesome game.. since 1991 no youtube guide. . up to now still enjoy playing. this great video guide
Thanks, Carlos, that's a good tip!
How to fight the Dark Queen:
'Try to get her from behind....'
Me:
Oh man... for sure I will!!!!
Battletoads was way ahead of its time. The graphics were amazing. The gameplay was on a whole new level.
That was intense! Holy hell brother you are awesome.
Thanks man!! Its always a surprise when the Japanese version is easier.
A few other NES games were like that, Ninja Gaiden III was made harder for US than Japan.
Look, I made it to the 5th part of the rocket car stage when I was a kid. One time I accidently hit the warp, and I consider that beating the game!
