It's surprising how often that works. A lot of games assume you're going to run around and jump on stuff instead of just wailing on the boss, when you can kill them before they even start attacking or moving.
The power up and recover you have to hit up on the dpad to activate those in the menu screen. The final boss is only like 10 hits if you use the power up. Your last points is what you use
I beat this on my NES when I was a kid. Great game. Had a cool glitch on the top-down "sand" level where you could get through the collision detection of the walls when it scrolled between sections and you could run around in the grass. You could see unfinished/programming areas that were not normally visible. Need to do a video of that for fun sometime.
I remember this game, I never played it too much when I was a kid, because I didn't know what to do in it. Somehow it still left a persistent impression on me, its mysterious solitary atmosphere and music is quite unique, as you grow older and older, it somewhat drags you back to it. Eventually, I picked it up 2 or 3 years ago just to figure out what it is all about.
The end boss is where "Power Up" comes in to play, it extends your "Disk Armor" to hit him easier. Attack & Assail hits everything on screen everywhere so it can be useful, though power up is cheaper to use.. You have to target the Lions Head to damage him.
This game was one of my favorite, never beat it but got so close. The Arcade was dope too, different type of game, more linear and more on your reflexes with a constant barrage of enemies attacking.
This is one of my favorite nes games of all time, one time i got stuck on the boss and had to leave it running for a few days. For some reason i couldn't turn it off.
The Eruga beast a 2:30 gets stuck through a game bug if you hop on it's head/back so where it's leaning o the right. Once it gets to the tree on the right and can't go further, it only takes a few hops before it's stuck. You can then just hop off and pound away while it's twitching lol. The spider at 3:40 you can go into the middle then grapple hook to the top then the monster will come at you from left or right and just keep jabbing whenever it comes close.
Because a room that had someone in it 100% of the time so far was empty after many glitches occurred in a game neither of them had finished before? I think YOU are a little dumb.
Rygar is one of 'those' games. An NES game where, if you stop and think about it, everything about its world is fucking weird. I mean, can you imagine the meeting where someone pitched the idea for this game?
The PAL version of Rygar is lots, lots more difficult than the NTSC version. The reason is that the game wouldn't fit on the European cart, so Tecmo had to remove small amounts of data. Practically this means that Rygar cannot get as much health as he can in the NTSC version, and he can't use the abilities (attack and assail) as much either. This makes Ligar almost impossible to beat in the PAL version. It's doable, but it's extremely difficult and you just need luck and a lot of patience to do it. There's probably a RUclips video of "PAL Ligar" and you'll see how difficult he is there thanks to Rygar not being able to power up as much as in the NTSC version.
The enemy hitting you while pause is the same in Blaster Master. I remember that if you hit pause at one certain point when one of your shots hit the boss, you could cheese him like that. Just leave the game paused while the boss flashes, unpause and the boss dies.
Hands up if you’re a Brit and heating the word Argus(Argos) in December has sent you on a nostalgia trip - for the rest of the world, think AVGNs wish list episode. Argos had this huge catalogue. The best thing was the shops were pretty much empty. You went to the counter with a slip with the stock number on it and it came through on a conveyor belt
The buttons "start" and "select" may have once had literal meaning, but for a long time, "start" has just brought up the menu, and "select" brings up any kind of secondary menu.
I LOVED this game growing up. I didn't beat it until I was an adult, but for many fruitless years I was obsessed with it. Always coming back to it between the times when my parents would buy my siblings and I new games. The thing that screwed me up, and I didn't realize it till I was an adult and playing it on my Wii's Virtual Console was that there was EXP and leveling up. Probably why I couldn't finish it as a kid XD
I enjoy the sudden moments of fail where Mike gets that look of, "Just let me do it so we can move on..." Great vids...why do i love these so much???? lol
You know you can use the “Attack & Assail” on the last boss and kill him without even approaching him. Attack & Assail delivers damage to any enemy on the screen for 10 attacks with your weapon. So you can get in the room, use Attack & Assail, stand on the far wall near the door and just shoot your weapon 10 times. He’ll die before you finish the 10 repititions. You need to have high stats to kill him like that, but he’s really easy with this method.
Well if you watch the video, early on they mess with the optoins but clearly have no idea how to activate them. I imagine this remained an issue the entire playthrough.
The reduced maximum health probably explains why I never got more than halfway through the game (I could get past the robots part and reach the boss at the top of the tower too). The rope things you used the pulley on were always awful. There was never an indication of whether you were lined up right to make it work.
Holy shit I remember this game... I was a kid and rode my bike to the local video rental shop (Back before blockbuster was the only one about) and rented this game.. I played it a bit, then the next day I invited this one kid from school over to play video games. We played a different game and this went "missing" and was never found, so I ended up in shit for having to replace a game (I was like, 7ish I think). 15 years later when moving out of the house I grew up in I found this game behind the fridge.. the kid didn't even steal it, just threw it behind the fridge to be a dickhead.
Is it actually that good? I beat this one and got the ps2 version when it came out but id swear I got a bad copy because for some reason that I can't remember it wouldnt let me progress more than like 5 mins in
This is one of those games where I got stuck at the same spot over and over and over and over again. Kept going back because it was fun and challenging, but man did it piss me off... never did make it past the one point.
Love the ever loving hell out of this game. Other than Metroid, there weren't too many side scrolling adventure games like this. Pretty ambitious of Tecmo. I do wish they would make another. 2D or 3D. I love the music and setting in this game.
Please if you see this you have to try and get to play "Desert Bus VR" on steam! that should be fun! or you could revisit as AVGN it would be just like Episode 119 all over again! give a thumb up so James and Mike see this! Desert Bus is back and better than ever! The 1998 Penn and Teller cult hit mini-game is coming to virtual reality, so you can fully immerse yourself in the thrilling eight-hour trip from Arizona to Nevada. It’s almost like you’re driving the “wheel” thing!
That's funny, it always seemed like Select and Start were redundant to each other to on NES, might as well combine pausing and menu mode together. Much like the separate Pause and Start buttons on the Atari 5200, you start the game once but you can pause the game anytime in between that two buttons or more is unnecessary, might as well be Start/Pause/Menu.
The bars are what you use for life and such. You just need enough bars. And the doors w no guy anymore is cause you already got the weapon like in zelda
Mike's knowing nod as James screams out ARE YOU KIDDING ME is such a perfect acceptance of 8-bit gaming. Dude has seen some shit.
Watching James Rolfe turn into the Angry Video Game Nerd, while playing a game as himself, gives me a reason to live another year.
Word Unheard the line between the nerd and james is slowly breaking down haha
lol
he got too close to Jekyll & Mr.Hyde. in it the guy eventually starts turning without the potion
@@snooks5607 well put!
I GET MORE EXCITED FOR J&M MONDAYS THAN I DO FOR FOOTBALL
"Oh Shit, I Shoulda Read That." The James Rolfe Story. In stores now.
"lemme get good at this boss before using the heal"
*stands directly in front of boss and spams attack button
It's surprising how often that works. A lot of games assume you're going to run around and jump on stuff instead of just wailing on the boss, when you can kill them before they even start attacking or moving.
James and Mike are the reason I survive mondays.
The power up and recover you have to hit up on the dpad to activate those in the menu screen. The final boss is only like 10 hits if you use the power up. Your last points is what you use
Mike doesn't have a drinking problem, he has a "Link to the Past" problem. Can't stop talking about it.
Is it?... treatable, I have my doubts.
Retro Gaming Junction It is a serious condition where the patience is stuck in a link to the past. It's only cure is if he plays a better Zelda game.
Retro Gaming Junction don't we all
EIzi - so you're saying there is no known cure...
@@elzi8199 Talk about killing a joke smdh.
This game has the best music.

Gotta get TONE BRO

Great video. Loved how the game didn't kill James at one point and it was like they were giving praise to all the Gods for it!
You should play Faxanadu some day.
Don't forget your bloody mantra!!
I still remember the main theme song, "do dah dah do dah do do do eeeuuu do dah do"
I second this post

The easiest way to level up in this game. Is to get to the area where the robots are. They are worth a lot of experience.
Actually in the cave is even better. Those purple fuckers keep falling off the ledges 3 at a time constantly. You get several kills every 5 seconds
"Looks like a walrus wrapped in bacon." Classic!
These James & Mike Mondays with the classic nes games are top notch.
Loved this game when I was younger. Thanks for letting me see you guys run through it again!
This game is so weird and cool, I can't help but love it. Thanks for playing it guys!
River City Ransom (original), guys. I don't know why you are denying yourselves one hell of a co-op game.
Eric Lundin that would be amazing 😉
I miss James and Mike Mondays.
Do you even Rygar BRAH!!!!!
Walter ? Bruh!!!!!
That ending ad scared the shit out of me.
You guys need to play Faxanadu. Even if you don't you guys rock!
I'd like to see that
Yes faxanadu
Hell yeah.
I’d love that , great idea
Mike looks like he is trying so hard not to laugh at 7:06.
Wow...I've NEVER seen the ending to this game until now.
This game was one of my favorite, never beat it but got so close. The Arcade was dope too, different type of game, more linear and more on your reflexes with a constant barrage of enemies attacking.
You cut out the cool part where you play the instrument to go up to the floating castle.
My all time favorite NES game.
Within 10 seconds of playing this clip, you can already hear Dr.Jeckyll & Mr.Hyde.
This is one of my favorite nes games of all time, one time i got stuck on the boss and had to leave it running for a few days. For some reason i couldn't turn it off.
You have to hit "Select" in the menu for power up, etc...

Nick The Hick Why?

Need to use Rygar's psychic powers- Attack & Assail makes the boss fights a lot easier.
Congratulations on completing the game fellas! This was a childhood favorite of mine too

Lee Martin sounds like Service Merchandise in the states. I liked that store.
James getting more and more like the Angry Video Game Nerd. He uses the "WTF?!" countenance every time something happen. :D
Thank you for the last two weeks, it was like revisiting my childhood.
Like to let them know the "Boss Roar" is actually the boss musik and not the enemy (Boss) making that sound.
And now the gripping conclusion of Mike and James Monday
Gotta pick up this game and try out myself , looks like an underrated game
The buttons "start" and "select" may have once had literal meaning, but for a long time, "start" has just brought up the menu, and "select" brings up any kind of secondary menu.

"WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!?"....prolonged silence.
I never got the Tone thing either... dang... ok guys, Faxanadu now!
3:41 Mike and his Elvis references
Smooth Suspicious Minds reference...
The trick for me was grinding it out for a long time in the ice part. It’ll fill up your power bar rows and have you totally ready.
It's a great game even if it has a lot of glitches.
Play Rygar: The Legendary Adventure on PS2 next, James and Mike.
WHAT'RE YOU KIDDING ME
- The fall of man
you guys did the bosses the hard way. if you jump on them a lot, they get stunned. (jump for like 30 seconds in a row) and you can just pwn them
Hard to watch you guys never use Mind points on Power Up or Attack & Assail. No wonder it was a struggle!
How is the European version harder? I had the PAL game as a kid and found it quite difficult (but fun) lol.
Well if you watch the video, early on they mess with the optoins but clearly have no idea how to activate them. I imagine this remained an issue the entire playthrough.
The European version is almost impossible to finish. The hero is half powerful than the usa version so the final boss is true pain.
The reduced maximum health probably explains why I never got more than halfway through the game (I could get past the robots part and reach the boss at the top of the tower too). The rope things you used the pulley on were always awful. There was never an indication of whether you were lined up right to make it work.
Rygar is a true human being.
And a true hero.
I really like the jumping in this game. But I wish that you could jump onto the ropes instead of starting at the bottom
"You'll be CHEAP!" "You'll be DEAD!" 10/10
The rewards were vast for us old NES warriors. Smiles regained their faces and the rainbows were finely pixelated
One of those games, which i ever play! At least i saw, how the game ends. Thanks guys!
You guys should do Legendary Wings next or maybe Flying Warriors for the NES
oh ffs that end. At least put a pause or have the volume lower
James use the crossbow on the final boss.
I think i actually dig this game alot , because of that grind kind of rpg type of gameplay.. my type of game i guess
So many hours wasted as a kid, without realizing it was all about the tone.
Still waiting on the Bionic Commando (nes) play through, come on guys!
The glitch Gremlin is out in full force on this game 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love these guys
I love the music in this game!
you should make a completely animated James and Mike Monday
I still play this freakin game from time to time. I also have the modern version for Wii, very much so like God of War.
Holy shit I remember this game... I was a kid and rode my bike to the local video rental shop (Back before blockbuster was the only one about) and rented this game.. what a beautiful end.
Hopefully you will play ps2 version next.
Version? It's a sequel/prequel/reboot.
@Mark
It's actually called Rygar: The Legendary Adventure.
Mark Curtis ive played the demo. Seemed cool.
you mean the true father of God of War and Devil May Cry? yeah
Is it actually that good? I beat this one and got the ps2 version when it came out but id swear I got a bad copy because for some reason that I can't remember it wouldnt let me progress more than like 5 mins in
I'd actually want to play this.
This is one of those games where I got stuck at the same spot over and over and over and over again. Kept going back because it was fun and challenging, but man did it piss me off... never did make it past the one point.
In the final level, I think you can fight the shadows instead of just taking damage.
Love the ever loving hell out of this game. Other than Metroid, there weren't too many side scrolling adventure games like this. Pretty ambitious of Tecmo. I do wish they would make another. 2D or 3D. I love the music and setting in this game.

I jumped through a wall behind one of the last bosses, and it literally just gliched me into the last stage. No one believes me, happened back in 90
I like the YEAHS!!! You guys had fun
God seeing that last boss brings back memories remember being stuck on him forever since I wasted the potion it's such a button mash luckfest lol
YOU ARE REALLY A TRUE HERO

He wasn’t there because u got the hook already so that’s what happens he disappears lol
Exactly 🤣
The bars are what you use for life and such. You just need enough bars. And the doors w no guy anymore is cause you already got the weapon like in zelda
Attack and assail will allow you to attack anything on the screen without having to actually hit them with your weapon
That glitch at the start happens very often in this game. Also, you don't want to glitch out monsters since they give you power ups.
Will you guys be getting around to the PS2 remake?
It's a Rygar and Rolling rock kinda day! Cheers!
It's all about Rygar brah!!!
This game Rules.
The font at the end of a game makes it look like it's saying " You are really a true nerd"
I'm like number 4000 for this video!!!
What is the most satisfying ending for the NES, SNES and Genesis for you guys?
