The reason for two box covers is because it had a Saloon on it (that clearly says Bar) and Nintendo had them change it because of their well-known, strict American censorship policy from that time.
Dude, honestly, THANK YOU, for replying with actual useful information and not another stupid ass joke that has been beat to death. We'll never get away from idiots who think the same thing is funny EVERY single video, but it's people like you who make the comments worth visiting.
You are right Mike, Gunsmoke was a tv show, and when they put the game out they didnt want people thinking it was related to the tv show, and they wanted to avoid copyright infringement. So they made the name Gun.Smoke
Doing some research, checking some facts, and skimming through game instructions before recording a video isn't always one of Cinemassacre's strong suits, lol. They just pick a game, and go "What the hell is this? Why this title? How the hell do you play this? This game sucks!"
My comment was purely neutral, not meant as a complaint :) But for the most part I agree, it's funny. Sometimes, though, slightly frustrating, as they equate not knowing how a game works with the game supposedly being poorly designed, lol.
Remember that time on Gunsmoke where Marshall Dillon was captured by ninjas and Festus used a machine gun and some smart bombs to rescue him? That was a really great episode.
The wanted poster is like a ticket to fight the end level boss. Buy it or find the poster to make the boss appear soon, otherwise just scroll up shotting goons for infinity.
(Woman stands around, a blistering gun fight raging all around her) "I'm on your side!" (holds out shotgun) (You reach for the shotgun, she slaps your hand away.) "That'll be $6,000."
When you have the smart bomb selected and you get hit it explodes, it's like a extra health bar, and at that ninja stage it's good to use the shotgun for those in the back.
Tonto* was not a Ranger though, and the lone ranger was only called such because he was the last ranger surviving from his ranger group, not because he is alone. a lone gunman by definition is alone... or at lest the only one with a gun
The game came out in 1988 same time as Super Contra so unless they were stuck in the realistic western "lone gunman" by the higher ups, I'm not sure why technologically they didn't have multiplayer
contra for the most part had less sprites on screen at the same time, you can see here especially the last level they did there was a lot of flickering, with two characters with dual guns each it would have been flickering a lot more
I don't think he's a fan of westerns. It's a lot more fun when you're invested in the subject matter. I get the feeling he probably would have liked the game more if they were on a space station blasting aliens.
this was one of my favorite games when I was a kid i use to get so pumped when i got the horse. For some reason I remember having to push select to use the smart bomb, could be wrong as it was 1991 the last real time ive played this much.
Legendary Wings never has more than sixty four 8x8 pixel sprites. So there is your reason, the single player, horse and your own bullets already use up about half the available sprites on the screen so with just a few enemies the horse legs already glitch! Don't blame the developer for weak sprites of NES.
From what I can Gather about the two different box art the one with the single cowboy is from the Captain Commando Challenge Series, so like Metroid one is a reprint. Apparently, this was when captain commando was a dual laser welding man from space. Before they changed him into a Space cadet fighter pilot with a pet monkey.
This game is sick! Too bad it's a bit short. Sure, you can't shoot down, but if you could those guys on stage 4 wouldn't be any added challenge. I like it for that reason. If you can shoot down you always gotta pay attention for what's behind you but in this one it's really only an issue on stage 4. Next time, try to keep the shotgun and use it since it's much easier to hit those guys. The posters will just let you fight the boss. If you don't have it, the stage will just keep looping which happened at stage 1 where it looped like 3 times before you fought the boss. Thanks for the video!
Dude, honestly, THANK YOU, for replying with actual useful information and not another stupid ass joke that has been beat to death. We'll never get away from idiots who think the same thing is funny EVERY single video, but it's people like you who make the comments worth visiting.
Yuri Suzano Silva Uhh, I think you're confused or confusing me with someone else. I only posted twice on this video and the other post is explaining the items in the game
the smart bomb is for killing fools who come at you from behind, also it works like a shield so getting hit by a backstabber actually kills all mobs on the screen
1966 Batman was polite because that was the times. During the 60's, the rebellious age bouncing from the 50's was on rise. So, to have a superhero which was obeying the law every which way was the best way to prevent children from committing crimes or staying out late. Note: Batman and Robin were never out late or at night.
There's a pretty cool samurai in the old West movie called Red Sun. It stars Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune. Bronson plays the leader of a group of train robbers who hold up a special train carrying a diplomatic envoy from a Japan. They were going bring a ceremonial katana sword to the president of the United States. One of Bronson's gang double-crosses him and takes the sword. Toshiro Mifune is a samurai who's duty was was to guard the sword and now it's up to him to get it back. Bronson and Mifune team up, one for revenge and one to keep his honor.
+Odexian I feel like he was looking for something to criticise. But I guess that's what a lot of people subconsciously start doing when they don't like a game from the start.
Stephen Hawking appearing in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1993. Actor Brent Spiner was quoted at the time as saying it was "the most notable moment in television history since Albert Einstein guest-starred on Gunsmoke."
Two things stand out to me about this video: 1. Mike goes ape shit on the accent thing and fucking cracks me up. And 2. James seems to hate this game a lot for some reason
the reason is cartridge limitations, just because other games like this were 2 player does not mean anything, this game could be longer overall than the other games and the only way to fit 2 player might be to leave out 1 of the levels, final fight on the snes was cartridge limitations for sure 100 percent. that is why they released final fight guy
No, Mike was closest with performance issues being the reason to omit the 2 player mode. ROM cartridges can be unlimited in size if you start using bank-switching techniques, best example is Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Sega Genesis. Since Action 52 was brought up, it is actually the largest NES game in terms of ROM information. It has 2MB which quite frankly scares me. Final Fight on the SNES was just because Capcom was being retarded.
Cesar C.T. But rom size isn't an issue here anyway. 2 player would use the same sprite pallet swapped. Hardly any extra code. If they made it one player for technical reasons, it would be because of performance.
I mean, Mr. Han was a kung-fu master with a sadistic bent. We saw his various hands in the torture display room. Using a badass claw hand makes perfect sense.
Still makes it an NES game. It was a game that got ported to NES, so it's an NES game. That's like saying a ton of Sega Genesis games aren't Sega Genesis games because they were ported from an arcade game.
When was this one made, it could be an early game and that is why they were not able to program it single player yet. Games started to get better over the life of the NES.
Hell, MegaMan was a 1 player game and it used to freeze! Mike might be right. It might be a performance issue. If you program the game for two players you'd have to double the amount of enemies, otherwise it would be too easy. Or maybe James was on his period and felt like comlaining about every little thing.
Final Fight for SNES was one player because the big sprites on a home console game were a big deal and it was probably pushing the console limit with just one player. Seems with the sequels they had to reduce the sprite size to allow two players without exceeding the sprite limit.
The European version has a different cover as well. That means there is a least 3 different labels for this game. This is a hard but a good game Mike. The music sounds like the music in the flight game 1943. Sunset riders are a hard and good game too. Nice review James and Mike :-) Best regards SuperMiramis...
It seems to me during the last few episodes of J&MM that James feels more and more distant and unfocused, whereas Mike feels a lot more into the actual playing. It's the opposite of older episodes, where it really felt like they were on the same wavelength. Maybe James and Mike are growing apart a bit? Not as friends, obviously, but as buddies in gaming.
creating narratives is fun. James seems like he knows he has a big enough audience for it to be lucrative enough to keep making content, but probably isn't into games and movies like he was 5-10 years ago.
Why were there two versions of the game with different labels? Two versions of Gun.Smoke were released under license in America by Romstar. One has a fixed sequence of bosses; in the other, the third and sixth levels are swapped, so that Roy is followed by Wolf Chief, and Pig Joe is followed by Ninja. The other version also removes the boss rundown.
I think there might be two versions of this game, although they're very close. I had this game when I was a kid, and I'm seeing variations from what I remember from the version I had.
This was one I had as a kid and played the hell out of. As an adult I bought a copy of each game I had back then, which wasn't many. Just a few early titles. The guns make a huge difference, they just ran the magnum out of ammo so fast they didn't realize anything even changed. It does get rough beyond the ninja level. You have to use a bit of strategy with your items. Different guns in certain places, know when to use the smart bomb (when you get hit you don't die and it kills everything on screen) and know when to buy a horse which takes a few hits before it dies so it's like extra lives.
The reason it aint 2 players is: They didn't code it to be 2 players.. it may sound easy but everything you implement is a lot of work in game development. they probably didnt think multiplayer was a priority
I absolutely LOOOVE this game!! Took a while to realize you gotta shoot EVERYTHING to find the wanted poster to get the boss, but that’s the only gripe. But everything about this game is awesome, the music, the gameplay, the cheesy story, all of it
I remember playing this game because it was in one of my bootleg Famicom cartridges! This was also released on Famicom Disk System as well, but due to FDS hardware limits, the boss music BGM was in place of the stage music included in this NES port.
Gunsmoke was one of my favorite NES games. The wanted poster let's you get to the boss without replaying the level again. You need it to finish the level and get to the boss.
It makes me mad to watch they seem to ignore you can shoot up by pressing both A and B buttons even though James made it by accident a couple of times and never noticed it
At fist I thought that was an over exaggerated pun of one of the games problems, thing they usually do in AVGN. To be fair its tiresome to do it right without a turbo controller but I was shocked to see they went on and on and on without noticing it
I was rewatching this on a whim and I just realized something. The game includes a Machine Gun more then a decade before the Gatling Gun was invented. The Gatling Gun was a US Civil War weapon but this game is set in the late 1840s.
It's hard to get a real cartridge, but y'all should play Elemental Master on Genesis; another good vertical shooter where the main character is a human (wizard in this case).
When it comes to Western movie bad asses you can find at least one in the silent film era. William S. Hart. A lot of his characters are described as "the good bad man", an outlaw who also has some decency in him. It was after his time in movies that Westerns started having goody-two-shoes characters like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. There's several cycles of different filmmakers playing with the Western genre.
The reason for two box covers is because it had a Saloon on it (that clearly says Bar) and Nintendo had them change it because of their well-known, strict American censorship policy from that time.
sounds about right.
Dude, honestly, THANK YOU, for replying with actual useful information and not another stupid ass joke that has been beat to death.
We'll never get away from idiots who think the same thing is funny EVERY single video, but it's people like you who make the comments worth visiting.
stupid Prohibition!
@Barking, it is stupid. But Nintendo had a lot of stupid policies cause they thought only kids play games.
It could also be because the original artwork looked faded out and dull. The new one has more vibrant coloring.
Pressing A and B at the same time makes the character shoot forward
But it still wouldn't allow them to shoot behind them. =P
ColdWarfare 007 lol that was bugging me the whole time
Bugged me too.
Haha I wondered how long it would take them to figure it out :)
James and Mike really need to learn to start reading the manuals.
Wow, i was obsessed with this game when i was a kid, and when i got the turbo controller it was on. i played this everyday after school.
hell yes, me too
Yeah the Indian dude fucked me up when I was 5
It's singleplayer because it's about a LONE gunman.
Never heard of the Lone Rangers lol?
osp80 yes! Haha thanks for getting the reference
That's a good point
You are right Mike, Gunsmoke was a tv show, and when they put the game out they didnt want people thinking it was related to the tv show, and they wanted to avoid copyright infringement. So they made the name Gun.Smoke
Doing some research, checking some facts, and skimming through game instructions before recording a video isn't always one of Cinemassacre's strong suits, lol. They just pick a game, and go "What the hell is this? Why this title? How the hell do you play this? This game sucks!"
OJ The Viking But thats what gives the show its charm for me, it's not preplanned and choreographed like many of the lets play videos on youtube
My comment was purely neutral, not meant as a complaint :) But for the most part I agree, it's funny. Sometimes, though, slightly frustrating, as they equate not knowing how a game works with the game supposedly being poorly designed, lol.
I'm sure a lot of people also do that at home themselves though, which can then make it more relatable haha
They should call it Gun (Smoke).
Remember that time on Gunsmoke where Marshall Dillon was captured by ninjas and Festus used a machine gun and some smart bombs to rescue him? That was a really great episode.
I remember the time the Didact was going to destroy the Earth, and Marshal Dillon and Miss Kitty had to defeat him?
Festus' Quest.
I only remember the crossover episode with baywatch.....man was that an epic fight between Hasselhoff and Dillon.
Every time James comments negatively on the game, Mike dies a little inside.
So happy James mentioned Legendary Wings. Underrated NES game. My Dad to this day talks glowingly about the game.
very underrated game for nes
I was about to post the same comment. Awesome music too.
The wanted poster is like a ticket to fight the end level boss. Buy it or find the poster to make the boss appear soon, otherwise just scroll up shotting goons for infinity.
This is undoubtedly a classic NES game. I'm surprised neither of them had played it before
they're definitely a younger generation
I'm 35 and fucking loved this. James is like my age right?
The music for this game is amazing. Especially the title and selection screen.
It is Gun *.* Smoke because they were ahead of its time and prepared everything for the URL links.
(Woman stands around, a blistering gun fight raging all around her) "I'm on your side!" (holds out shotgun)
(You reach for the shotgun, she slaps your hand away.) "That'll be $6,000."
When you have the smart bomb selected and you get hit it explodes, it's like a extra health bar, and at that ninja stage it's good to use the shotgun for those in the back.
Andr0ids and all the enemy's on screen die.
This is actually one of those "hidden gem" games you never hear about. It's a really fun shoot'em up that has quite a bit of depth as you go.
If it was 2 players; it couldn't be a "lone gunman" anymore
That's what I was thinking. The designers were trying to embody the "lone gunman" cliche featured in many western films.

James obviously doesn't like this game. I always thought it was awesome. Great setting and gameplay, plus the music is fantastic. :)
This music is fucking awesome. Loved it since I was 4
This game was an excellent shooter. Loved it. Looked forward to renting it for the weekend
I don't think he's a fan of westerns. It's a lot more fun when you're invested in the subject matter. I get the feeling he probably would have liked the game more if they were on a space station blasting aliens.
I wanna see a part 2 to this one. Mike, you should beat this!
If it wasn't for this video i wouldnt know today is monday.
same
clean your room
I had to check my calendar to confirm myself. Mondays are quite infamous.
Sort yourself out
Mike hella consistent with the cowboy impersonation, he loves that one
Anyone else screaming at the screen for them to push A+B to shoot vertically?
Yep! And I was almost screaming at the screen for them to do a lot of other things too that they weren't doing.
It did piss me off actually
Nice hair
Nash J. Who said anyone's watching this from their phone?
i tried, its not work
this was one of my favorite games when I was a kid i use to get so pumped when i got the horse.
For some reason I remember having to push select to use the smart bomb, could be wrong as it was 1991 the last real time ive played this much.

mark murphy the fuck you talking about?
And most overhead shooters from that era (although they were mostly space shooters?) did not let you shoot backwards.
Yuri Suzano Silva Uhh, I think you're confused or confusing me with someone else. I only posted twice on this video and the other post is explaining the items in the game
Spiriax you can shoot down. Press both A and B
the smart bomb is for killing fools who come at you from behind, also it works like a shield so getting hit by a backstabber actually kills all mobs on the screen

Oh god yes. This game is amazing.
You guys should change James and Mike Mondays to a live stream so we can talk to you guys live while you play.

I used to play this game with my turbo controller and you become like unstoppable. It's actually really fun.
Game seems awesome. James seems like he was having a rough day or something, seems grumpy.
+Odexian
I feel like he was looking for something to criticise.
But I guess that's what a lot of people subconsciously start doing when they don't like a game from the start.
Odexian He was grumpy because he had to do some work in his 6-days-off-week, and had to be an hour away from his daughter.
Stephen Hawking appearing in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1993. Actor Brent Spiner was quoted at the time as saying it was "the most notable moment in television history since Albert Einstein guest-starred on Gunsmoke."
Of course, AE never actually appeared in the GS TV series.
Malaikat31 smh
Einstein had a very soft, almost feminine, voice and played the brothel Madam on the episode titled "Trigger Finger"
Two things stand out to me about this video: 1. Mike goes ape shit on the accent thing and fucking cracks me up. And 2. James seems to hate this game a lot for some reason
I feel like Mike isn't having ANY of James' shit this monday.
Don't you miss the old days? When an airport just was "The Airport" and when towns were called "Hicksville?"
Oh man Mike, that Moe Knows shit takes me back. My old man had one back in the 90s. Very cool.
I remember Gunsmoke the TV show about Marshal Matt Dillon shooting machine guns and killing ninjas.
The town is under siege by outlaws! Quick, call in a mass-murderer!
the reason is cartridge limitations, just because other games like this were 2 player does not mean anything, this game could be longer overall than the other games and the only way to fit 2 player might be to leave out 1 of the levels, final fight on the snes was cartridge limitations for sure 100 percent. that is why they released final fight guy

The Boogeyman Have you seen the way sprites flicker on the NES when too many are on the same line? It would've been an absolute mess.
Cesar C.T. But rom size isn't an issue here anyway. 2 player would use the same sprite pallet swapped. Hardly any extra code.
If they made it one player for technical reasons, it would be because of performance.
Indeed. Legendary Wings may have looked similar but didn't have a shop system and dialogue among a bunch of other things.
I mean, Mr. Han was a kung-fu master with a sadistic bent. We saw his various hands in the torture display room. Using a badass claw hand makes perfect sense.
Man this was one of my favorite games on the NES as a kid. What a classic!
The smart bomb is like insurance. You select it from menu, and when you get hit, it blows killing all in the screen (except boss ofc)
Good game, perfect turbo controller game.
This was not an NES game, it was a 1985 arcde game originally, then ported to NES in 1988, as shown on the beginning of your video
Still makes it an NES game. It was a game that got ported to NES, so it's an NES game. That's like saying a ton of Sega Genesis games aren't Sega Genesis games because they were ported from an arcade game.
I preferred the NES version to the arcade, but still loved the game. That fourth level, with all the ninjas is insane.
When was this one made, it could be an early game and that is why they were not able to program it single player yet. Games started to get better over the life of the NES.
Funny thing, there is a real town called Hicksville in Long Island NY.
Ikr, I’ve been there multiple times. I thought they would know but ig not cuz New York and stuff 😭
Hell, MegaMan was a 1 player game and it used to freeze!
Mike might be right. It might be a performance issue. If you program the game for two players you'd have to double the amount of enemies, otherwise it would be too easy. Or maybe James was on his period and felt like comlaining about every little thing.
One of my favorite games for the NES
One of my fav nes games , grew up watching my dad play it, so many good memories! hands down such a great game
This game was soooo dang good as a kid. I never beat it. My cartridge was the one on the left of the screen with the bright clothed cowboy.
Mike's T-Shirt is based off the spoof of Bo Jackson's "Bo knows.." back in the 90's
False
I love these type of games Commando is one of my all time favorite NES shootem up! Especially with my NES Advantage joystick. Turbo up!
AHMAN! I love this game. Good going guys!
Final Fight for SNES was one player because the big sprites on a home console game were a big deal and it was probably pushing the console limit with just one player. Seems with the sequels they had to reduce the sprite size to allow two players without exceeding the sprite limit.

Mike should really consider voice acting as a career. I'm serious.
His classic puberty crack-ups would be great to hear more of.. ;)
Funny how this game also becomes much more difficult when you get to death mountain
Great to see james again take me back to the good old times
This is such a great vid, one of my favorites now. Something classic about this ep than usual. Great work.
Legendary Wings is a CLASSIC! I'd love to see you guys play that one, if you haven't. I still have the cartridge on my shelf.
I think there might be two versions of this game, although they're very close. I had this game when I was a kid, and I'm seeing variations from what I remember from the version I had.

Used to love this game so much. It was one of those games I could just play through as I got home from school from start to finish then dinner :)
The reason it aint 2 players is: They didn't code it to be 2 players.. it may sound easy but everything you implement is a lot of work in game development. they probably didnt think multiplayer was a priority
Darth Vader's helmet is based off of a WW1/WW2 German military helmet. That design is the gold standard from which all other countries have adopted.
I absolutely LOOOVE this game!! Took a while to realize you gotta shoot EVERYTHING to find the wanted poster to get the boss, but that’s the only gripe. But everything about this game is awesome, the music, the gameplay, the cheesy story, all of it
DINO RIKI. Would be awesome!!
I don't like shooters typically but I like this one.
One of my favorite games from NES; loved all the sounds and music! Thanks.
One of my favorites on the NES, still play it every now and then
fond memories of this game, have I
The”wantedsigns” makes you to”find”the boss. Otherwise the level will loop until you found the sign och buy it.....
They had already fought two bosses at this point. Did they buy the poster then, too, or does the boss appear after X number of loops?
@@benjaminoechsli1941 You can find the wantedsign on each level OR buy it….
I remember playing this game because it was in one of my bootleg Famicom cartridges! This was also released on Famicom Disk System as well, but due to FDS hardware limits, the boss music BGM was in place of the stage music included in this NES port.
Please do Guerrilla War by SNK! That game supports 2 players and it singlehandedly redeems SNK for that godawful Ikari Warriors NES port.
Seems like the NES version of Sunset Riders on the SNES. Which is a game I have been wanting to see you play for a long time now.
This game was 4tg grade for me
I remember renting this from the library all the time. Loved the intro music for it too.
Great game, I loved this as a kid.
I beat this game a few months ago and it took me like 7 hours to do it. Its probably the most repetitive game ever but it was so satisfying to finish
Gunsmoke was one of my favorite NES games. The wanted poster let's you get to the boss without replaying the level again. You need it to finish the level and get to the boss.
I thought the claw was a well known kung fu weapon, but I like your reasoning james.
loved this game so much, did not have it myself but played it loads at my cousin´s place. :D
It makes me mad to watch they seem to ignore you can shoot up by pressing both A and B buttons even though James made it by accident a couple of times and never noticed it
If this makes you mad, you better not go outside or watch TV, man, it could give you a stroke
thanks for worrying for my health Nash J. but it makes me angry, not somatic symptoms sick
delaorden How can they always miss so much stuff. Are they slow or stoned or what?
Mike is very sharp in his streams but when playing with James his iq drops to the low 60s where James's seems to reside.
At fist I thought that was an over exaggerated pun of one of the games problems, thing they usually do in AVGN. To be fair its tiresome to do it right without a turbo controller but I was shocked to see they went on and on and on without noticing it
James is being pretty douchie in this episode.
Loved this game as a kid. Great music!
The music is so good in that game!
James was a real downer this video. Mike is better by himself.
I was rewatching this on a whim and I just realized something. The game includes a Machine Gun more then a decade before the Gatling Gun was invented. The Gatling Gun was a US Civil War weapon but this game is set in the late 1840s.
The original arcade game was not simultaneous 2 players.
It's hard to get a real cartridge, but y'all should play Elemental Master on Genesis; another good vertical shooter where the main character is a human (wizard in this case).
james coburns knife throwing in the magnificent seven was pretty badass..

Battling ninjas in the old west! That's awesome!
They got hired by the Wingates'!!
