You have to try and start as close to the wall as you can. He'll move a bit to the center but then start moving in a spiral pattern. As long as you have enough health, you can usually wait until he gets close enough to the side to grab one, but you're right - it sometimes takes a couple of tries.
It was so much fun exploring the sprawling areas of Super Metroid and finding the upgrades back in the day and it still holds up well today, then theres the music.
I wish I had it growing up, I discovered it back in 2010 through the Wii virtual shop. I wasn't a huge Metroid fan, I liked it a lot playing only Metroid II and Prime 1 previously, though Super Metroid blew me away. Greatest game of all time.
3:21 - 3:30 Now that is true teamwork! Awesome play! And you can finish the bossfight at 6:10 quickly by selecting the Grappling beam, then letting the boss lift you up. When it's lifting you up, try and hit the electric sparks in the wall on either side of the room with the Grappling beam and hold the button. It'll do some damage to Samus too but the Boss should/will die before your Energy runs out.
And /or shinesparks , mockballs etc. Not that Im a speedrun pro but I never use the grapple beam once to finish the game. I know this is for fun and the commentary thou.
the Draygon fight can be done in 10-15 seconds. destroy the guns on the wall that shoot the tiny energy pellets and they'll leave a little static patch on the wall. when Draygon grabs you after spitting that shit on you, latch onto the static patch with the grapple beam and it'll drain its energy!
180 missiles / 30 supers / 20 charged ice+plasma+wave shots each will kill him If you guys had wave and a little more health this probably would have gone differently
it feels like they cut 75% of their gametime, didn't see them grab the wave beam, plasma beam, so damned many missile upgrades Still just under an hour of video and a part 4 coming. Maybe this game truly is too big for this particular series
So have I, but we're not James & Mike. They're taking their time, don't use walkthroughs, having fun. It's part of what makes the videos entertaining, since they're doing it their way. I just wish we could see the entire sessions.
Lol entire sessions would be hilarious, if the stuff they are messing up made the cut, just imagine how many times they died to regular enemies or how long they spent trying to wall jump.
Meridia boss is not hard. You guys missed alot of energy tanks for starters. Secondly, when he picks you up, switch to your grapple gun and you can latch on to those energy node things against the wall and funnel life out of him. Those two things would have made the fight alot easier. Love you guys! :)
ThePalskinator I guess this is what I get for not reading the comments section before attempting to take on that boss again. I finally beat it but not before getting really pissed off.
ThePalskinator omfg this is not a 100% video! They are playing for fun! "You guys missed a lot of energy tanks" no shit moron they're just trying to beat the game this isn't a 100% game play.
Thank you James and Mike!!! I have always loved playing Super Metroid. Since you guys have been playing, I have been too. I am almost at Ridley myself again. When I am home from work, and on my days off, I keep playing. I used to hate Monday, but, I always have something AWESOME to look forward to.
Super Metroid has to be my favorite SNES game and I LOVE that you guys are committing to an entire play-through! I understand that you guys are very busy and so it doesn't bother me that you aren't systematically collecting everything in the game. Don't let these trolls get under your skin, both of you guys are quite skilled at gaming and have impressed me many times! Besides, you were both clear about your familiarity with the game and so it's ludicrous for anyone to expect some crazy 100% speed run.
Hey James and Mike just a tip on doing the bomb juggle/jump. There is something there that allows you to keep your timing right. At least in the beginning stages, listen to the music, tap the button to the beat double time, so if youre counting 1-2-3-4 you hit on every up and down beat so in a count of 4 you would actually hit it 8 times. So a count of 1-2-3-4 would actually have 8 hits of the button. Youll hear it, just start by tapping your foot to the fast beat, then try it out on the controller, once you get it, you really have to try to keep pace with the music, but once youve figured it out, you wont forget it. Anyways, give it a try I was able to get to the top of the cliff outside the ship on the right side doing it, and I suck at this game, ive only gotten past the 3rd boss. It was just something I figured out, I tried it, and it was perfect. Hope I get to see you use it in a video someday. Thanks for all the videos!
Great video guys. Did you know that you can electrocute Draygon? You just need to let him hold you and use the grappling beam on one of the broken electrical things on the wall and, voilá! The boss will get major damage and die after a few seconds. The only catch is that you lose health too, but it's totally worth it! Keep up the good work!
Ivan Drago can still fight for sure James+Mike. Look up the music video: Imagine Dragons - Believer. He fights the vocal lead in the video lol...and it's recent. He looks like he hasn't aged at all! WTH, is that dude a vampire?
James got really lucky after killing Botwoon at 01:50, because Botwoon's body parts can still hit you after you've depleted his health. :) Fortunately he got 'health bombed' because he was low on health right before a farm spot...
00:35 -- "Why does this game get a pass, and that doesn't?" Haha, Mike just summed up the entirety of most of his review videos. From one game to another, or one franchise to another, he'll either complain about, or celebrate/ignore similar elements.
What's interesting about the space jockey being obscure is that in old interviews from the late 70's/earl 80's, Ridley Scott already had the idea of doing a prequel that focused on the space jockey. But once Cameron came along and put the focus on the Xenomorph, after the success of Aliens, Fox felt that every sequel from then on had to focus on them instead of the jockey and that backstory.
During the Meridia boss,i was actually expecting Mike to say "Hey let me show you an awesome trick to take this guy down"...in case you dont know what im talking about, when you shoot those turrets out and Draygon grabs you, while he's holding you you can latch onto the electrical fields that used to be the turrets with your Grappling Beam when you get close enough and although it will still damage you,you can fry Draygon in just a few seconds...still,im glad they did that fight legit and with so few energy tanks,i was pretty impressed...also those Metroids that you encounter there are not called Metroids...they're called MOCH-troids...but who cares they look the same so lets just call them Metroids.:P
8:20 there was another way of beating that boss if I remember correctly. You have to grapple at those energy things on the wall when he is holding you and you will electrocute it.
In that part where they talked about "jumping into spikes" and "how did we figure it out when we were 12", I think you're supposed to have the X-Ray Scan by then, and you'd see the passage in the illusionary spikes. And they fought the 3rd boss with 5 energy tanks. That makes it harder -- and IMHO the 3rd boss is the hardest of them.
I'm loving this Super Metroid playthrough you guys are doing, this is your best one yet! Makes me really want to replay that game ASAP. I'll wait it out until the SNES Classic gets here.
One of my favorite James & Mike plays yet! And yeah, always struggled with the Maridia boss too. Even compared to Ridley and Mother Brain, I always thought this one was harder until just a few years ago when I got better at the game
I'm glad that they didn't kill that boss the easy way like everyone here is talking about. It was much more entertaining to watch them do it the challenging way.
Hey James and Mike! Thanks again for producing great episodes like this. Not for the next episode, but for a future episode, could you please play Star Fox Adventures? That would be such an awesome multi-episode game! Thanks for pumping out such great content for over 10 years!
You guys should definitely do D on PS1 sometime! And damn, Ridley's definitely That One Boss, since unless you're incredibly skilled, there's just no plowing through him without having a great stockpile.
I know you guys are retro but for October (not specifically this one) can you play Alien Isolation? I am a huge Alien nerd and it would be great to see you play something more modern for once.
I am shocked you didn't know to grapple beam onto the electrical fields when fighting the Maridia boss, it makes the boss trivial but it's so fun to do it that way. I am 41 and I can beat this game in just a couple hours still lol, It's like muscle memory for me.
"Why does this game get a pass and ninja turtles doesn't". Because no one does that. You can use the speed booster on ground level, and shine spark through that room.
Do you guys have Little Nemo Dream Master? That was a pretty good game when I was a kid, getting to ride mythical creatures through each stages. I have fun playing that game.
I've always thought it's weird how well I remember certain things, like how do you not remember the grapple truck but you prepped for it? How do you not remember that those aren't metroids they are really bad clones, later the clones get better and look different. Or that the little guys before that boss are babies. Am I the weird one? Like your a proffessional nerd (props to you for making that a career, your awesome) which is why I think it's me that's the weird one...
I never got the chance to play Super Metroid when I was a kid (due to me being about four years old when it came out and the fact that I never got a SNES) and I've only played parts of Fusion and Zero Mission, so it's great to see something like this. I'll definitely pick up Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS when it comes out, though.
No you don't. Some of these games are so bad they're not even fun to make fun of. (Don't) watch their Spirit of Speed video. It's the worst game ever, at least Big Rigs and Plumbers Don't Wear Ties are funny and I wouldn't consider it a "game" but Robert Mapplethorpe was a great photographer (he also took lots of pictures of naked kids...wonder why they never made a sequel)
The easy way to beat the maridia boss is, when he picks you up, plug your grappling beam into those electrical outlets
i did that boss recently and i knew that was a way, however, i never managed to be grabbed close enough for the grapple to connect
that's the only way i've ever beat him
You have to try and start as close to the wall as you can. He'll move a bit to the center but then start moving in a spiral pattern. As long as you have enough health, you can usually wait until he gets close enough to the side to grab one, but you're right - it sometimes takes a couple of tries.
I thought this was the only way. Still learning new things about this game after 20+ years.
the intermediate way is to get all the super missile upgrades and just nuke him
The Metroid's you saw at 0:50 are actually called Mochtroids. They are the result of failed experiment to clone the last Metroid.
miff nnnnneeeeerrrrrdddddd
Only found in Maridia.
Thank you for being the one to say that. I can't believe we still remember this shit after over twenty years lol
Was going to comment the same thing lol
were even do u get that info from?
It was so much fun exploring the sprawling areas of Super Metroid and finding the upgrades back in the day and it still holds up well today, then theres the music.
Those tactile sounds from the SNES controller are nice.
It sounds like its shattering!
A(Snes)MR

Well, obviously James's tomb stone have to say "You can just walk over it". Anything else would be letting millions of fans down xD
3X73RM And if it doesn't, you'll probably track his tombstone down and chisel or spray-paint that on it so I wouldn't worry too much.
I thought it was going to be "FUCK", as seen in the AVGN Games episode.
3X73RM “no more continues....ASSSSSSS”
This is my still my favorite game of all time; Even over 20 years later!
I wish I had it growing up, I discovered it back in 2010 through the Wii virtual shop. I wasn't a huge Metroid fan, I liked it a lot playing only Metroid II and Prime 1 previously, though Super Metroid blew me away. Greatest game of all time.
The way Mike looks at James at 10:20 lol. Such great friends very cool.
Co Worker: "Aww looks like someone has the case of the Mondays."
Me: "I dunno what you're talkin' about lady its fuckin' James and Mike Mondays!"
It'll do some damage to Samus too but the Boss should/will die before your Energy runs out.
am I the only one screaming "use the grapple hook"?
Haaaaahaha
ironically, during most of the grapple hook moments, i mentally screamed 'why aren't you walljumping that part?!'
And /or shinesparks , mockballs etc. Not that Im a speedrun pro but I never use the grapple beam once to finish the game. I know this is for fun and the commentary thou.
lol nope my mind is ablaze with those four words
Cory Brand i think he meant use the grappling beam on draygon, it ends the fight almost immediately.
no, you're missing so many health tanks is the thing!
Talok85 they're just trying to get through the game. Not be completionests.
the Draygon fight can be done in 10-15 seconds. destroy the guns on the wall that shoot the tiny energy pellets and they'll leave a little static patch on the wall. when Draygon grabs you after spitting that shit on you, latch onto the static patch with the grapple beam and it'll drain its energy!
Would be fun to see u guys watch and comment on a super Metroid Speedrun
180 missiles / 30 supers / 20 charged ice+plasma+wave shots each will kill him
If you guys had wave and a little more health this probably would have gone differently
Dark Tzitzimine They have the wave beam.
it feels like they cut 75% of their gametime, didn't see them grab the wave beam, plasma beam, so damned many missile upgrades
Still just under an hour of video and a part 4 coming. Maybe this game truly is too big for this particular series
Haha it's funny you calling it "too big". I can beat it in 1.5 hours.
The maridia boss is actually very easy if you use the grappling beam.
That's the only method I use for defeating Draygon.
Agreed. I always thought that was the point, since they put the cannons on the walls that you can blow up.
The fact that he only has 4 Energy tanks at this point in the game hurts my face.
Hurts more to know it took him all 4 tanks to kill the boss. USE MISSILES
To be honest using that trick takes all the suspense from the fight... I prefer beating him the normal way it's still not hard at all like that
ThePalskinator omfg this is not a 100% video! They are playing for fun! "You guys missed a lot of energy tanks" no shit moron they're just trying to beat the game this isn't a 100% game play.
Lmao Draygon made the Godzilla sound pitched up and James gasped
I was hoping to see you guys use the grapple on the electricity.
Thank you James and Mike!!! I have always loved playing Super Metroid. Since you guys have been playing, I have been too. I am almost at Ridley myself again. When I am home from work, and on my days off, I keep playing. I used to hate Monday, but, I always have something AWESOME to look forward to.
Absolutely loving the super metroid. My favorite James and Mike Monday series yet.
I do wonder overall how many people tell of THAT way to beat Draygon now. As well if James and Mike even knew of it?
10:13 cutest moment. i love james and mike
Super Metroid has to be my favorite SNES game and I LOVE that you guys are committing to an entire play-through! 4:25 you totally nailed it on Creed's son fighting Drago's son
13:00 has to be one of my favorite music pieces in games
That's pretty true when they were saying "we figured this out when we were kids?" I think that sometimes when replaying Zelda games

I live for the clicky goodness of controller sounds over game audio
F-Zero is probably my favourite SNES game. I could never get enough of that Big Blue theme song when I was little.
I was always the "Mike" when playing these old games, the kid who had the smart ideas telling my buddy what to do, LOL!
That boss fight was intense AF.
Why is it that every game James and Mike play, I immediately get the urge to play the game myself.. xD.
You don't need more missiles for Ridley. Charged plasma beam does way more damage, get some more energy and then just use the charge beam.
James got really lucky after killing Botwoon at 01:50, because Botwoon's body parts can still hit you after you've depleted his health. :)
Fortunately he got 'health bombed' because he was low on health right before a farm spot...
I cannot describe how much I love this game!
There was a much easier way to beat Draygon... Just use the grappling beam and connect to the electric outlets once she picks you up. Insta kill.
Pizza pizza is the name of a Canadian pizza shop
James does everything the hard way.
0:35 because you're just suppose to perch on the corner and duck to reach it. You don't need to jump.
00:35 -- "Why does this game get a pass, and that doesn't?" Haha, Mike just summed up the entirety of most of his review videos. From one game to another, or one franchise to another, he'll either complain about, or celebrate/ignore similar elements.
The part at 15:06 to 15:15 looks something straight out of Castlevania!
I still can't unhear that "I was watching television" song from when The Runaway Guys went to Norfair
I think we just had way more time back then so we found many more tanks and missiles and it just was easier with double the life.
'He's doing popcorn' (Mike on Draygon). Sweet kids!
Alright we'll see ya next fall lol ! That part was funny, by far my favorite series and such a great game keep em coming James and mike
3 health left. Unreal. Those sorts of moments are awesome.
You can use the spring ball during the Ridley fight to lay the super bombs in the middle of the arena and get a much wider blast radius.

Searching for all the jimmy jams is half the fun! Best of luck!
8:20 there was another way of beating that boss if I remember correctly. You have to grapple at those energy things on the wall when he is holding you and you will electrocute it.
Nothing better than hearing that snes plastic controller noise in the background.
Nothing beats hearing the sounds of the Snes controller squeaking as they play.
11:19 Why did you guys wait this long to get the wave beam???
I'm loving this Super Metroid playthrough you guys are doing, this is your best one yet! Makes me really want to replay that game ASAP. I'll wait it out until the SNES Classic gets here.
One of my favorite James & Mike plays yet! And yeah, always struggled with the Maridia boss too. Even compared to Ridley and Mother Brain, I always thought this one was harder until just a few years ago when I got better at the game

Hey James and Mike! Thanks again for producing great episodes like this. Not for the next episode, but for a future episode, could you please play Star Fox Adventures? That would be such an awesome multi-episode game! Thanks for pumping out such great content for over 10 years!
I honestly didn't know you could beat Draygon without the grapple hook lmao
Best game ever made!! I'm loving this series!!
You guys should definitely do D on PS1 sometime! And damn, Ridley's definitely That One Boss, since unless you're incredibly skilled, there's just no plowing through him without having a great stockpile.
lmao when Mike has to take the "X" too good. Always entertaining guys.
Please make more of these videos, were you guys play through an entire game. :)
I know you guys are retro but for October (not specifically this one) can you play Alien Isolation? I am a huge Alien nerd and it would be great to see you play something more modern for once.
Or maybe do a back-to-back Alien 3 Genesis/Super NES?
Dom! What's up man, it's Jericho!
Oh! Hey! What's up??
Wow I never thought about the Ridley/ Ridley Scott tribute thing!
Damn! That actually IS the Roar of Anguirus!!
17:55 ALSO get more Reserve Tanks if you know where to find them!
2:51
Mike: "Get up there!"
AVGN quote.
10:25 Or you forgot that the boss is very weak to the grappling beam, killing it off really quick :P
2:20 - 3:30 You can just run through it! Then go up from the right side.
I am shocked you didn't know to grapple beam onto the electrical fields when fighting the Maridia boss, it makes the boss trivial but it's so fun to do it that way. I am 41 and I can beat this game in just a couple hours still lol, It's like muscle memory for me.
3:25 LOL, you actually have to speedbooster to the other side. Amazing you glitched it like this.
For the water boss, a trick: after taking out the cannons, equip the grappling beam & latch onto it. It'll electrocute him to death.
It's hard because you missed like 2000 secret rooms
14:03 you could've called it "The Nintendo Triforce" and get another of your mandatory Zelda references.
Love this. Keep lookin' for energy tanks. See you in the next episode. =D One of the best "mondays" ever. =D
"Why does this game get a pass and ninja turtles doesn't".
Because no one does that. You can use the speed booster on ground level, and shine spark through that room.
I remember when I discovered you could use the grappling beam to kill that boss by electrifying your suit.
You guys were supposed to wait for the Maridia boss to grab you, then grapple to one of the broken plasma cannons on the wall to electrify him!
On the fish boss your supposed to lock onto one of the electric zappers with the tractor beam when he's holding you. Wham instant fishzap
Do you guys have Little Nemo Dream Master? That was a pretty good game when I was a kid, getting to ride mythical creatures through each stages. I have fun playing that game.
I was actually so happy that they didn't know about the grappling hook trick.
You forgot that when he grabs you, you can get out by grappling onto the electricity from the broken turrets.
That controller sounds like it's going to snap at any moment lol
You would think with James and Mike's vast experience with nes games, super metroid would be a cakewalk for them, but it's the reverse.
For Meridian boss, let it pick you up, use your grapple beam, and shoot into the broken sockets on the top sides of the room. It does instantly
PROTIP: @9:00 you need to use your grappling beam and attach to the electricity on the wall when he grabs you.....
"It's called getting old"
Fuck, that stung a little bit
I wanna play every single game from JaM Mondays so fucking badly.. :D
including Sailing?
yeah it looks like great drinking game :D
We pretty much own almost every game they played with original consoles (besides the few rare one of course ) but there's just not enough time :(
No you don't.
Verty eh, I'm 23 and don't know anyone my age who has played it, save for myself. Seems like closer to 30 is the age that most likely played it
12:58 , I was watching Television , If you've seen the Runaway Guys Lets play this game you'll recognize that
Summer of 94. This game was my angry obsession. Had to call the Nintendo Power hint hotline to figure out that damn false spike floor.
You can use the grapple beam on the electric things in the maridia boss when it grabs you to insta kill it
5:46 _"we figured this stuff out when we were 12"_ , more like.. Nintendo Power :P
James couldn't tie his shoes without the Nintendo Power guide.
That boss fight halfway through the stream was tough to watch. I saw the electricity turret. I saw your grappling hook.
