I laugh so much! Really fun to watch you both... favorite moment: - Mike: Ohh... that's bad, that's bad... Don't let that happen again. -James: Weeell...I... I'll just tell her to Stop.
i don't get why people are so intolerant with james and mike not being good at a particular game. i think is part of the fun, i mean, if i wanna see skill then i watch a speed run or whatever. i'm here for the jokes and the commentary. For once they play a game that i know and i'm good at and i don't feel it is "painful" to watch at all
The dude has history of blaming the game for his lack of skill, when the games were perfectly fine and majority of people his age myself included finished it no problem. You can see the instances of it in this very video at the beginning when he couldn't deal with two enemies when all he had to do was stop jumping around like an idiot.
Manhwa Fan he admited that he didn't know what to do, asked for a hint in the coments, and he got them at the second try. Yeah he tends to blame games a lot, but at the end admits that he is not that good and that he needs to practice, the same with mike and the same with a lot of us. Myself included. Even if that is what bothers the fans. Most of the time they complain about james or mike being bad at the game, and not james and mike blaming the controls of whatever
Because that's the way those people are... just as this is the way you are. Although from what I've seen most folks are miffed that they didn't save the animals...
Yeah, I agree. This is much more "real" than watching someone who has perfected the game. I mean, there's entertainment in that, too, but this is like sitting on the couch with your friends watching them play the game and experiencing the same frustrations you would have.
James and mike did once say if you want to see someone play good at a game, go watch someone else. They don't play these games because they're experts they play them because they think they're fun or what not
+TentacularTaku apparently someone's either referencing, or actually believed MatPat's "Hidden Enemy of Metroid" video, where the Etecoons and Dachoras are somehow X Parasites. >.>
3:28 - Those bird things, if you notice every time you try to run away from them, they do a spin jump across the other side to you. You run away from them just enough so they do that, but try and face towards them while they land. Then they will do that leap up and down kick, which makes them vulnerable for a few seconds. And that's all it takes. Once you fight them once after knowing that, it becomes really easy each time after that.
This ending sequence, into Mother Brain's liar, is sheer brilliance. Not only is it exciting and fun, but holy shit, it totally utilizes one of the best philosophies in visual story telling. Show, Don't Tell. So many endings are so damn wordy and overly exhibitiony, it can kill tension and excitement. This keeps you so engaged, till the end. One of the numerous reasons why this will always be one of the best games ever made.
Watching James fight Ridley is downright hilarious. The intensity on his face and the way he panics so much that he can barely tell what he’s doing cause he’s in such a frenzy is pure gold. It just makes it funnier because I think all of us feel this way when we get to Ridley
The super missiles are your best friend when fighting Ridley. I have literally gone into the battle against Ridley with all 230 regular missiles and have exhausted the entire supply and he’s only turned slightly red, whereas with super missiles, if you have all 50, you can defeat Ridley with ease and still have many to spare.
I know it's 5 years later, but that metroid that helps you in the end is the same one you capture in Metroid 2 and deliver to the space colony (that Ridley steals) at the beginning of this game.
To make those enemies turn yellow, you need to stand near them. They will flip over you, turn around and kick downwards, that's when they become vulnerable :) Also, just something else, Ridley is weaker to charge shots more than missiles (I think for the plasma beam, so turning ice beam off helps. I may be wrong on that one though.)
There is a hidden thing at the end of the game when you’re trying to get back to your ship. You get to save some creatures on the way back and you see them survive as your ship flies away. It makes the post mother brain run more stressful but it’s worth it to save those guys.
I got told the names whilst watching an Austrian let's play. It also gets mentioned in fusion. What were they called again? Etekun and Dakora? Or something?
nice for beating Ridley and all, but you forgot to get the E-Tank at the room where the broken capsule that held metroid in at the bottom of the door where you exit from.
Technically the Metroid timeline has two branching paths- one where you save the animals, and one where you dont. In the one where you save the animals, Samus lives and the standard ending of Metroid Fusion happens. If you didn't save the animals, that opens a separate timeline where Samus dies at the end of Fusion.
These Super Metroid has been some of the most enjoyable J&MM videos yet. Such an incredible game and seeing you guys enjoy playing it was a bonus, thanks for the amazing content!
I love how everyone is complaining that they didn't save the animals when they likely don't even know you can do it. Mike, I think, said that he's only beaten the game once before. Heck, the only reason I know about it that I read it on TVtropes.
I usually get them to trigger when I spin jump over them to get to the other side. That makes them spin jump then kick you. It's not 100% this always happens, but 80% or 90% I think is a fair number with this techique
Did you guys do a single Shinespark in this series? Crazy shinesparks are one of the most fun things you can do in Metroid games... you don't have to be a super skilled speenrunner to enjoy them.
Keep up the great work guys. I love the videos that you guys create. I like how every time I watch James play it always sounds like he is pressing all the buttons at the same time. LOL
You can sort of bait the ninja spacepirates to do the kicks that turn them golden and vulnerable, jumping at the right position relative to them triggers it if I'm not mistaken, but it's been a long time since I played it
Don't they realize that that giant Metroid is the baby from the end of Metroid II and the beginning of this game? And the fact that it stopped draining Samus right before she lost all her health is because it suddenly recognized her and that that's the reason why it came in and saved her from Mother Brain?
Oh you made my morning (Sweden). I love that you are just two guys playing, no't speedrunners. That makes me and people like me (40 year old woman who grew up with NES) som much more invided to your thing. I feel welcomed. Sometimes when you look at a speedrun you feel like an amatour. I can speedrun Super Mario Bros though but that's another story. Good work guys. =D
I've noticed since I've went back to classic gaming that Im nowhere near as good as I was as a kid. I beat all the hard games before I was 10, but now I struggle with Mario 3. Lol
They tend to do those jump kicks that turn them yellow when you are standing on one of the two sets of 3 blocks in the middle of the area (not the sets of 3 blocks near the doors)
During the escape sequence up that long shaft where James says you need to use the little jumps and not the space jump, you can actually space jump most of the way up one side of either wall.
The only thing about Super Metroid I don't like is the Super Missile. It's way too OP, and the ammo way too abundant. No wonder they never brought it back after this game. Also the wall-jumping and the Shine Spark are way too finicky to pull off. Other than that, this game is a masterpiece.
Also Ridley's HP is 18,000 and missiles only do 100 damage so you'd need 180 missile hits to kill him. Supers normally do 300 but do double damage on Ridley so you only need 30 Supers. Also if you're using Plasma, Ice, Wave beam then you can kill him in only 20 charge shots. Ridley can keep fighting even after he drops to zero hit points, the quickest way to end the fight if you know you've hit him enough times is to morph into a ball and let him pick you up
The trick on those guys turning yellow is to do exactly what you did when you beat them. They do that jump kick and you screw attack over them then they turn yellow and you use a missle or charge beam.
3:30 to make them turn yellow you must wait for them to use that jump kick attack as seen 2:06 here 3:14 and here; just stand close but not too close to them and wait for that jumpkick attack. it's really easy once you get used to it
you have to be in the air so you trigger the spining jump. after they spin jump, they come with the flying kick. you can also hit the while they're atacking with the flying kick. u don't have to dodge to hit them in the back
Protip to maximize how many missiles you have going into mother brain - destroy those barriers leading up to her, then before fighting her, go back to the previous room and shoot things to get missile drop refills until you're maxed out. When you go back into mother brains room, the barriers will still be gone, thus many more missiles for the boss fight.
great NES game you guys should play is UNINVITED by Kemco-Seika (sp?). So cryptic and confusing, yet fun to solve the mysteries. I dont know how I ever beat it when I was a kid- with no game-faqs or any internet.
9:39 - You should never save in Tourian because once you do you can't later use that save file to go back and explore the game, finding items and areas you missed. Once you're in Tourian you can't leave. The only thing you can ever do with a save file in which you saved in Tourian is fight Mother Brain again.
I have a game that I think is perfect for James and mike, especially James. Slain Back from Hell, its a challenging 8bit platform game. Heavy metal soundtrack. I got it on Xbox one.
Seriously the plasma beam charged does the most damage on Ridley you guys have trouble and the bosses have tricks that make it easy, it's a great game but it takes practice mike you need to do a cinemassacre plays of it.
I laugh so much! Really fun to watch you both... favorite moment:
- Mike: Ohh... that's bad, that's bad... Don't let that happen again.
-James: Weeell...I... I'll just tell her to Stop.
he get`s drained by a metroid- mike: "thats bad"
Pelida Duli only gripe you cant hear sfx or music of game sad face lol
11:29👍
No animals were saved in the making of this video.
That's a agdq reference?
@@Fedekpc you can save some animals at the end, during the countdown. Near the spaceship
did not count as an playthrough imo :D
NOOOOOOO
You don't really save them cause they blow up though.
i don't get why people are so intolerant with james and mike not being good at a particular game. i think is part of the fun, i mean, if i wanna see skill then i watch a speed run or whatever. i'm here for the jokes and the commentary. Steve McCord Yup, and they saved the universe from the X virus!
JEXOL X Seekers Wat
+TentacularTaku apparently someone's either referencing, or actually believed MatPat's "Hidden Enemy of Metroid" video, where the Etecoons and Dachoras are somehow X Parasites. >.>
Steve McCord I noticed too. WTF James.
Michael Alvarez nerd 👍
The giant Metroid that helps you with the mother brain fight is the same metroid larvae you save at the end of Metroid 2 : Samus Returns.
Thank you, Captain Obvious.
hethdavid that's explained in the beginning of Super Metroid, dude! People who know about Metroid 2's story can put two and two together.
Apparently Mike and James didn't know this, lol... "Oh, that metroid is your friend, now!" Unless they were trolling.
And did you know that Samus is a Woman !!!!! SHOCKER!!!
uhhh, you mean metroid?
I really want to see James play Metroid Prime.
3:28 - Those bird things, if you notice every time you try to run away from them, they do a spin jump across the other side to you. Man, every game I watch them play - James panics so hardcore when things aren't going okay. It's frustratingly hilarious.
They never figured out that that big Metroid was the Metroid Baby that recognized Samus as its mother...
@mamuburaa
What is THAT supposed to mean ?!
This ending sequence, into Mother Brain's liar, is sheer brilliance. Not only is it exciting and fun, but holy shit, it totally utilizes one of the best philosophies in visual story telling. That bench story was one of the most unrewarding stories I've ever heard.
3:55 James is so into the game. LOL
Took the Paramount tour 1/7/2018. They did not let us sit on the Forrest Gump bench. Thanks Mike.
"You ain't seeing shit" - Mike
LMAO
My favorite all-time game. Thanks for the memories guys.
Awesome stuff guys, been watching your videos for close to 7 years now. Thanks for cheering me up when I feel down and stay rad. Cheers.
The music in this game is so epic and timeless! I've always loved it!
I know it's 5 years later, but that metroid that helps you in the end is the same one you capture in Metroid 2 and deliver to the space colony (that Ridley steals) at the beginning of this game.
I don't know if anyone said this already, but this is the first four-part episode on James and Mike since the Atari ones way back at the beginning!
I did a trade with a friend for this game when it came out back in 94. I'm now 36 and still remember enough to get a 94% completion rate at the end.
To make those enemies turn yellow, you need to stand near them. They will flip over you, turn around and kick downwards, that's when they become vulnerable :)
Also, just something else, Ridley is weaker to charge shots more than missiles (I think for the plasma beam, so turning ice beam off helps. I may be wrong on that one though.)
This game is 2d perfection. The ending of this game as a kid stirs up emotion comparable to movies at the time.
Its very entertaining watching you guys play and joke around, that what's make it enjoyable, great video. You guys are the best
I'd rather watch dumb girls that chew bubble gum and go in circles with their floss on the floor
There is a hidden thing at the end of the game when you’re trying to get back to your ship. You get to save some creatures on the way back and you see them survive as your ship flies away. It makes the post mother brain run more stressful but it’s worth it to save those guys.

Etekun and Dakora? Or something?
@@gamin9wizard945 Etecoons and Dracoras, I believe.
Etecoons (blue monkeys) and Dachoras (alien ostrich) And since you save them in Super Metroid, they appear again in Metroid Fusion.
nice for beating Ridley and all, but you forgot to get the E-Tank at the room where the broken capsule that held metroid in at the bottom of the door where you exit from.
They might have gotten it off screen cause they had more e tanks between recording sessions
Using screw attack on the ninja pirates tends to make them turn yellow in my experience.
They didn't save the animals :(. Also I thought I got the bad ending cus she only took her helmet off, but damn they went even slower.
There's no "bad ending", it's just whether you go fast or not. It barely changes anything.
Technically the Metroid timeline has two branching paths- one where you save the animals, and one where you dont. Those SNES Controller sounds during the entire Video is what takes me back to the past.
YOU DIDN'T SAVE THE ANIMALS! YOU MONSTER!
Can't tell whether this 1980s guy is serious.
GoingBackToThe1980s are you a fucking idiot? Saving the animals is a cherry on top of a particularly well done run.
I'm as serious as a person can be about a videogame. So...Not at all? Still shoulda saved the animals. It's a happier ending.
Jesus Fucking Christ. Are you really that stupid that you don't understand sarcasm, or humour?!!!?
Samus is now dead
James looked so in the game while fighting Ridley, that's what makes me love this game. Nice video
Favorite SNES game of all time. I could speed run through it all day long.
These Super Metroid has been some of the most enjoyable J&MM videos yet. Such an incredible game and seeing you guys enjoy playing it was a bonus, thanks for the amazing content!
Not only did they not save the animals, but mike broke the Forrest Gump bench.
Adjust your attack strategy.. Turn off freeze beam, use plasma beam (?) screw attack,... Shoot fast don't die! 👍
Missed the E tank in room after Ridley
I would love to seen them have a speedrunner on and listen as they're just amazed by what's happening.
I love how everyone is complaining that they didn't save the animals when they likely don't even know you can do it. Mike, I think, said that he's only beaten the game once before. Heck, the only reason I know about it that I read it on TVtropes.
I have no idea what's all this about. All I learned was in these comments, apparently you shoot a door and animals come out? Big deal.
I usually get them to trigger when I spin jump over them to get to the other side. That makes them spin jump then kick you. It's not 100% this always happens, but 80% or 90% I think is a fair number with this techique

Keep up the great work guys. I love the videos that you guys create. I like how every time I watch James play it always sounds like he is pressing all the buttons at the same time. LOL

You make them turn gold by jumping over them and making them jump at you. You can hit them from both sides.
I never had this on my Super Nintendo as a kid so I can't wait to get hold of my mini Super nes and start playing it
"Congratulations! You get to see Samus in a snowsuit!" - Brawl in the Family
the captured game footage looks really good in this video
Peeka789 yes, more smooth than usual, was it the monitor they mentioned?
I'm assuming it was. Or maybe its the type of capture card they used.
Indeed
Mike: That reminds me of... I'm not gonna say Zelda... (still mentions Zelda while not mentioning Zelda) xD
i always sad for the giant alpha metroid because he dies protecting his mother :(
What was your final time after the credit screen ?
That metroid is the baby metroid you saved in the Gameboy game! How could you forget!
Hope you guys do more multi-part series. I really enjoyed this series!
i just hope they find out that its more effective to use the charge beam sometimes. they can take out bosses pretty fast
Hi james and Mike !!!! Love these videos perfect way to brace for a case of the Mondays. Cheers guys.
I think we all know why that bench broke when Mike sat on it hahaha
James, you just gotta flip over them to trigger their flipping and turning yellow, just like when you succeeded.
Don't they realize that that giant Metroid is the baby from the end of Metroid II and the beginning of this game? And the fact that it stopped draining Samus right before she lost all her health is because it suddenly recognized her and that that's the reason why it came in and saved her from Mother Brain?

Yes I have been waiting for you to do Part II, that game is a pain. lol
Mike when you are gonna play the Shinobi and Treasure games? They're action must plays. I know you're a Nintendo guy but cmon...

why didn't you save the animals!!!
They aren't speedrunners.
they dont know about that little secret ending
speedrunners actually don't usually save the animals either

Makes you wonder if behind the scenes mike plays the games and james acts it out as avgn lol
I'm surprised you guys struggled with Ridley so much; He's fairly easy to kill with the Plasma Beam.
During the escape sequence up that long shaft where James says you need to use the little jumps and not the space jump, you can actually space jump most of the way up one side of either wall.
The Gump Bench couldn't support the weight of Mike's Monster Hog
The only thing about Super Metroid I don't like is the Super Missile. It's way too OP, and the ammo way too abundant. No wonder they never brought it back after this game. Also the wall-jumping and the Shine Spark are way too finicky to pull off. Other than that, this game is a masterpiece.
Good work James and Mike.
The most epic Metroid escape sequence and Mike uses that moment to talk about the Forrest Gump bench. Ha ha.
YOU FORGOT TO SAVE THE ANIMALS!!!
You had a minute and change and you didn't save the animals... they helped you too...
You guys should play BattleTanx on N64 for J&M. That game was fucking amazing to me back in the day
Glad I'm not the only one who find this game too hard. I played it only when I was already an adult and didn't even finish the game.

4:42 Mike praying for James' success. You guys are so cute
Also, you can press 'Select' to cancel sub-weapon selection. You don't have to cycle through all of them by pressing 'X'.
After seeing all these episodes being played by a player, not a dedicate speedrunner, I really feel I haven't missed anything in my youth.
If you jump clear over them they'll try to jump to get you, followed by that kick they do. They turn yellow during the kick

Anthony Watson I agree
Such an awesome game and series 🍒
If you stop in front of them without jumping over them I think thats what makes them do the downward kick and turn yellow
