In 2003, i was in grade 7, and the hobbit was a required reading for English class. we had to read it for book reports. i asked my teacher if i could play the game instead and he, in all his majesty, said yes. he altered for the format of my assignment and made me do a plot/level design report speaking about what actions i needed to complete the level and the aesthetics of the game as well as how it presented the plot. got b on the whole assignment

My favorite thing about this game is how openly angry Bilbo is when the dwarves send him to get something like...firewood. And he just has to fight and platform for his life by himself, so when he makes it back several hours later and he's just like "AND I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON IT" and that is so relatable.

Probably wouldn't work as well with LotR, but The Hobbit is a kids story, so it makes sense. This is why Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise didn't do as well. It was both more serious (like LotR) and more whimsical and the same time, creating a weird tonal dissonance for the audience.

    1. Despite beating this game over a dozen times as a kid, I never remembered the awesome “Hello there!” line by Gandalf until today.
    2. The Hobbit movies would have been far better if they’d followed this game’s script
    3. Was I the only one whose game crashed a lot, especially upon completing quests and ESPECIALLY during the mine level where you find the Ring at the end?
    4. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was irritated by the dwarves’ complete inability to do anything themselves. “Hey, thanks for saving all our lives for the 7th time. Do you mind going on a fetch quest for me?”
    5. Gandalf appearing in a flash of lightning between the armies of men, elves, and dwarves to warn them about the approaching goblins was the most badass thing ever.
    6. 21:20 I love the idea that the first thing Beorn does when he finally gets ahold of Bolg is, rather than tearing him apart with his giant bear claws and teeth, he instead give him the world's most epic b*tch-slap

We need games that look fun again. It's like we went back to 2002 but instead of the films all being dark and too high definition, it's the games. Games don't need to look like real life to be worth playing, and it's sad people think they do these days.

I adored this game as a kid. I just replayed the whole thing again for the first time in probably 8 or 9 years and I loved it. It was a lot harder than I remember, no help from my older siblings this time around lol. But it was genuinely the most fun I've had with a game in a long while. I'm biased for sure, but I definitely think this game is really solid. Bonus for Bilbo's sheer sass

Oh! I had this when I was a little kid, literally before I even learned to read. As such, I never really made it very far, I guess I just liked running around, but I remember watching my older brothers play it.

This was the first video of yours recommended to me, and I took a chance on it ... and wow am I glad I did. My family's been on a deep dive of your channel the last two days. Your impressions(?) are amazing, especially in your Return of the King and Sea of Thieves videos. The work you put in on editing, writing, inclusion of clips and references, running gags -- you're a chef of humor. Your videos are as dense with laughs as Arrested Development. You deserve so many more subscribers. Keep putting in the work! You're really something special. P.S. your BG3 thumbnail ruined me.

I was given a second hand copy of the PS2 version as a Christmas gift one year. While I was a big Tolkein fan I had never heard of this game so I wasn't expecting much from it. However, to my surprise I found it really fun, and I still look back on it quite fondly.

5:52 My favorite thing about this level, is if you fall off at a certain point in the level, instead of dying, you just glitch through the remainder of the level into Gollum's Lair lol.

This was my first ever proper video game, I must have played it through dozens and dozens of times, it taught me how to play real computer games. I wore out three copies between the ages of 5 and 12. When the second copy wore out they had stopped making the discs, but my aunt who knew how much I loved it managed to find me a new copy anyway. I used to borrow my dad's work laptop when he came home to play it. I found every secret, knew every cave, trap, and corridor (but I had to get my brother to play most of Mirkwood for me, I was pretty scared of spiders as a child!) The music and dialog are forever burned into my soul. I played it again recently, it felt like stepping through a portal right back into my childhood. I'm not sure nostalgia is a strong enough word to describe the feelings this game brings out in me, it's just memories of times when I experienced pure joy playing this game. I'm fairly sure I played this a little before my brother read me the book for the first time, and I remember being weirded out that my favorite characters, Leanna and Corwin, weren't in it. And yes, it was the first time I'd ever heard Jennifer Hale's voice. For years after, whenever I heard her, I'd go; "It's Leanna!".
This game means more to me than I think any game ever will. Great video, Cyan!

Gosh, I definitely am guilty of forgetting about this game. I remember it now, though. I rented this game from a library in my hometown when I was way young. I don't remember the gameplay at all but I know I rented it from the library - and I remember going to the shelf and finding this game.

Yes. This was my #1 childhood game and taught me who Bilbo was and how he found the one ring. The gameplay and the fighting style was a 10/10 in my book for a game of it’s time and I still have it on my shelf for another play through.
