9:30 I went and watched the video they referenced here, and it was amazing! Super informative and broke down the technical details into a level that totally made sense. If the *really* nerdy tech about speedrunning appeals to you, go watch it. Also, fantastic run! I always love seeing TASbot.
I stayed up just so I could see this live. Was worth it, TASbot really delivered. Very impressive. Thanks to all the authors who made this TAS. Also: Deer Force!
It was a miscommunication of how the run is timed, RTA timing for Metroid starts on first input, which is on Ceres, unfortunately there's nearly 3 minutes of cutscene before that
Personally, I like the version where the graphics still get screwed up, but fixed at every door transition. The fully unlocked cam is just a bit too weird for me.
What's funny about some of the things I see breaking these games is.. when i was younger and playing these games figuring these things out... I never realized I was doing things that would become part of a movement.. and it's so cool to see a computer run it and exploit things I found on my own and see them done perfectly
i wish it was explained at all why the TAS goes to so many areas that RTA was not. they say so many things about RTA being different and never explain why
kinda both? basically the inputs themselves are recorded in sequence and played back by plugging it into the game, so it is possible for it to go off-sync if it were to get unplugged for a second, for example
Tool Assisted Speedruns (TAS) are recorded using emulators to control the game frame by frame with perfect precision. This allows the TAS author to break the game doing things that a physical controller and actual humans cannot. Ordinarily, you would playback the TAS on a compatible emulator to watch the game play out. Physical verification is the process of performing the run playback on a physical device, 'proving' that the TAS is valid. TASBot is a physical device that plays back the controller inputs in real time, serving as both a physical verification and a really cool looking piece of tech. You could accomplish the same thing with a relatively low-tech PCB and the know-how, but it wouldn't look nearly as cool in a live setting. There has also been a ton of work to improve the accuracy and performance of the device over the years. So yes, TAS is pre-recorded. The physical ROB the robot model is just a cool looking model casing for the PCB that plays back exact controller inputs.
@@eudaimonistic While most TASes shown at GDQ are being played by feeding inputs to the console in real-time, this one was actually just an emulator video (well, a *pair* of videos, due to Save vs Kill) being played back. Unfortunately Super Metroid is very difficult to Console Verify because of desyncs between the CPU and SPC. Dwango made reference to that in this video, he went into more detail at SGDQ2018, where that TAS *was* being played back on a console. They needed to do some weird movement to make sure it would still sync up, which made the Ceres Escape time worse than many human runners are capable of.
This was a video recording of the TAS. For most TASBot shows, they are sending the controller inputs directly to the console. Unfortunately, SNES TASes are extremely challenging to sync with the console due to some timing variations in the audio processor.
Nothing is truly random in a video game - the "random number generator" in this game is actually doing a bunch of fancy math to make a fixed sequence of random-looking numbers. The "seed" for the random number generator is generally user input or the system clock, so if you make the same inputs at the same time the game will always get the same random numbers.

Wait, so is this TAS or a person playing? The inputs are crazy accurate and NO mistakes.... crazy 11:53 and how's he falling so fast consecutively? Is that the normal moon fall? I also noticed he was spamming the jump before a fall.
I've noticed this in a bunch of the GDQ videos from this iteration, but what's up with the bits and pieces of people talking in the background? Were the mics just too sensitive or was there a hot mic that wasn't supposed to be or? It could be worse but it's certainly distracting. If anyone is aware of what happened with this I'd appreciate knowing more.
Wait a minute. If this is a TAS, what the heck kind of effect would the bid war have on Saving / Killing the Animals? The TAS input sequence doesn't have realtime forks, as far as I know. That part seems phony.
I know this comment is 5 months old, but iirc they were running two versions of the tas simultaneously, and just switched the video feed to reflect the dono goals
What do you want, the slightest change in routing? The point is entertainment, if you had sniq make a separate rbo tas it would be 95% the same, there wouldn't be a point to a separate tas.
It's an odd decision, but TASvideos has always been very aggressive about "quality over quantity"; they don't want too many runs for any one game and have no problem removing a category if they think other runs for the same game are more entertaining. RBO will probably return eventually when someone finds a way to do it that's different enough. Anyway, "obsolete" runs don't go anywhere -- they're still hosted on the site. (If I had to guess, the reason for this philosophy is that TASing was incredibly controversial in the early days. Speedrunners felt, with some justice, that these impossibly fast runs would steal their audience. The TASers had to prove their work could be entertaining for its own unique reasons instead, and so there was good reason to have only the best examples on TASvideos.)
wow they really shouldn't have shown the bid war at the bottom of the screen for the last 5 minutes of this run, like clearly someone sniped in a fairly large amount for save right after tasbot stopped updating totals, but god it looks real bad to hear 'kill the animals wins' when the read out shows save winning.
AGDQ 2024 is live right now! Tune in to watch at www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick
Of all the runners, how the heck did Tasbot go over the estimate!?!? That is not acceptable at all! 🤣
35 minutes wasnt enough to contain the awesome.
One of those, "this hasn't happened before" moments.
If it were allowed to report its own estimate, this wouldn't have happened.
"Stick around for the funny item percent."
Video ends *IMMEDIATELY* prior to the number.
Right? I wish I could remember what it was.
Yeah Ikr? It was 21% btw
They've done it.
They found the Super Metroid BLJ.

Amazing video, agreed.
It's amazing that the incredible atmosphere of this game still comes through even in a TAS presentation. The end still gave me chills!

I'm not sure why but I find it funny that they got the estimated time wrong for a pre-recorded run. >.

As TerminalMontage showed us, it's either the animals or us.
According to the bids, it was an anonymous donation for $3,500 in the final seconds. Anyone giving bets that it'll be rescinded/reversed?

I can’t believe that Microwave Beam is a strat in TAS now.
I thought the clock would start after the opening credits. It seems like runs I’ve seen do that.
GDQ needs more Tasbot!
Why did they include the intro in the time? Usually the timer starts at ceres station. run was closer to a mid 33
I believe that TAS timing usually starts as soon as the power is turned on.
It's my understanding that TAS starts at power on, unlike RTA.
TAS runs start when the game is powered on, there is a TAS time and an RTA time, and also the in-game time.
Is the tas a prerecorded run? Or a robot capable of making frame exact inputs and responses, while doing a new run?
kinda both? basically the inputs themselves are recorded in sequence and played back by plugging it into the game, so it is possible for it to go off-sync if it were to get unplugged for a second, for example

This is only true for old games and games where the developers have specifically chosen to seed random number generators like that
it cut out before the item percentage
