Dark souls is basically a hd, 3d version of this, you play as a knight and all world is monsters and everything kills you, the pacing of these games are amazing, most old games are just artificially hard (cheap jumps etc) this game is hard but in a fair way nothing is random

Save PewDiePie I know, the game literally puts the weapons out as you need to use them. they are so fixated on the knife they don't pay attention to how the weapon is working. like how the scythe is better for the dragon heads because you can jump and hit while the enemy is retracted. not waiting for him to come to you, where then you have to jump and be vulnerable.

It would be nicer if the armor's "degenerated" rather than went all off at once...because now you got to work your butt off to get the gold armor only to have something smack it off of you. You'd think having a shield would give you more protection...
I remember, the "Magic Quest Starring Mickey Mouse" was basically Ghouls and Ghosts with Disney characters imposed over the enemies. The final boss is Pete moving like Satan, among others...

Honestly, I love BattleToads on the Genesis the best. They fix many of the glitched and bugs, and bring back the unlimited continues from the international release. Maxim is also another "Play it again for the real ending" but it is the spiritual successor to the G&G Series.
When they were talking about other games that are like ghouls and ghosts where at the end you are revealed to only be half way done, you guys missed Castlevania Symphony of the Night, where you have to re-do the castle upside down. very similar.
Pretty much every game that Taxan (an obscure NES publisher) made required you to beat the game at least _three_ times to get the real ending. Mystery Quest, 8 Eyes, GI Joe...
You have to double jump everywhere to find more hidden chests. There is one at the start of almost every level. Man, you are so going to snap, when you beat the "final" boss. I can hardly wait.

Yeah that's the only thing that sucks about the crossbow. Sure it's a lot more powerful when you get the other armors, and it is homing. But there is always that one arrow that never hits anything it just circles around in a circle. And you can't shoot again until it goes away. It's like ohhh you want to shoot again, well you can't. I'm going to go around in circles and hold you up.
The chests are a sequence. Usually goes Weapon -> Wizard ->Bronze Armor -> Gold Armor -> Shield, unless if you fuck up and lose the plain armor. You have to perform specific jumps to get them to spawn.
The weapon at the end had me in tears. I have been in their shoes playing for hours dying in the same spot. You get delusional and then when something new happens and it doesn't help...you lose it.
Speaking of difficult games that troll you with their endings ill never forget playing tiny tank as a kid for the ps1. And you would reach a certain point in the game on easy difficulty but then the game would abruptly end telling me to increase the difficulty to continue the story making me have to restart everything and then normal difficulty would be a couple levels more but then to my surprise the game all of the sudden tells me to increase the difficulty to hard to continue. It's one game i never beat for the simple fact that i had no idea i was meant to be playing on hard difficulty the whole time. And every time you had to restart your game from the beginning just to play on a new difficulty. So many bullshit games out there. But i love super ghouls and ghosts everyone should give this game a try its super simplistic but a great challenge.
You don't have a malfunction with the Turbo Tunnel, James, it's just badly designed. Going through a platform when it looks like you're gonna land on it is exactly what you criticized the Wizard of Oz game for.
so much of my childhood in this game, could probably sit down and complete it in one go again, but that's not a testament to any kind of skill i have, just the insane amount of time i spent playing it as a kid! and the music truly is legendary!

They've both been used in the past, but I think mostly because the people wielding them couldn't afford proper weapons, so just used farming tools.
Woah... I just realized that the graphics and music in this game are almost identical to those of "Super Empire Strikes Back." Especially this ice level vs. the Hoth level. That AND James and Mike mention the Tauntauns in S.W.E.S.B. SNOKE = KNIGHT ARTHUR CONFIRMED!!!

I swear to God, for all the AWESOME parts of this series of games (music, graphics, level designs, exciting and interesting creatures, cool weapons, VARIED weapons, fun upgrades)... ...some of the gameplay is just an INSULT to games in general, lol. The repetitive nature of having to hit everything like 30 times (literally), limited jumping distance, slow character movement, being "forced" to take weapons, and unfair "I'm off the screen but will come flying in at 50mph" characters, not to mention the idea of 2 hits and you're dead thing. It seems to me if they reduced how many times you had to hit "regular" creatures (not bosses)... increased movement speed by 50%, increased jump height, allowed every suit of armor to increase HP (say 2, 4, 6 hits?), allowed a secondary weapon, and doubled the amount of checkpoints... ...this game would have been WAY beyond epic. It'd be priceless. :)
You have to keep in mind that these type of games were expensive when they came out, so when you bought a game back then, you had to get your money's worth. I think what you suggested would have made the game too easy, and thereby take away from the joy of beating such a difficult game.

Ever heard of the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels) for the Famicom Disk System? Easily the hardest Mario game and technically an NES game.
That game is so fun. I play it with Luigi though with Mario it would be extremely difficult. I think I completed it but it's been a long time. I had it for super mario all stars.

Just going off the Ghosts & Goblins review James did years ago, and how this game is now taking three parts to complete...I'd have to say that Ghouls & Ghosts is much harder. But, according to everyone else, it's easier. If that's so, why does this look so insane and impossible to do? At least Ghosts & Goblins doesn't seem as complicated or unfair.
They aren't very good at this game. But to be honest, that's not their fault-- this game just requires practice, and it helps to know which weapons are good. I'm not sure James has ever beaten this game before; I think he had a lot more practice at Ghosts & Goblins.

I miss this in video games, where you get so frustrated about some hard ass part of the game and you won't let it beat you and you try for hours, and you finally beat it. Its rewarding, you get a little dopamine rush. They don't have that anymore its all press X to do this, and the game usually just holds your hand.

***** when wearing metal armor the metal isn't against your skin, if it was every moving joint in the armor would bite and pinch you skin whenever you tried to move, you always wear leather under metal armor, and that separation between your skin and the armour creates a warm barrier that the metal absorbs all of the cold, and the cold doesn't reach through the leather. Vikings and Norse warriors would wear full metal armour in the northern climates, where it's cold and snowy all year round... plus on a sunny day, the metal would actually absorb a lot of the sun's warmth, that the metal would be warmer then the air around it...

Ah man Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is one of the hardest games ever, I played through it recently and completed it but I think I aged 20+ years while doing so ;) That pick up near the end is the biggest Troll weapon in video game history! ;)

Super_Kami_Popo Yeah sure, if you have enough patience and perseverance you could also get through I Wanna Be The Guy. Its hardly a piece of cake to get through Dark Souls without prior knowledge/help though. The game's not designed to be a cake walk, so unless you have super fast reflexes / massive luck / prior knowledge of set pieces you're definitely not in for an 'easy time'.

DudicalDudeMan Yeah thats the main strategy to do it, combined with the initial hits you can do by throwing the weapons above his head, it becomes pretty less harder.
I played this game for so many hours, went through the whole game twice and I apparently still didn't have the right gear to fight the end boss. Incredibly frustrating, but once you memorize the game, it's easier. Good luck on the finale.

I have to disagree. It is very hard but not quite as hard since you get epic armors for powering up and even a spare shield. The only serious downside to this game is limited continues compared to the original where you have infinite.

Maximo is a spin off of the series with its concept based on ghouls n' ghosts so its natural to think that.
I miss this in video games, where you get so frustrated about some hard ass part of the game and you won't let it beat you and you try for hours, and you finally beat it. Its rewarding, you get a little dopamine rush. They don't have that anymore its all press X to do this, and the game usually just holds your hand.

Vikings and Norse warriors would wear full metal armour in the northern climates, where it's cold and snowy all year round... plus on a sunny day, the metal would actually absorb a lot of the sun's warmth, that the metal would be warmer then the air around it...

Ah man Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is one of the hardest games ever, I played through it recently and completed it but I think I aged 20+ years while doing so ;) That pick up near the end is the biggest Troll weapon in video game history! ;)
I always prefered the Ghouls and Ghosts version on the Genesis. It allowed you to shoot up and down!!! Thats why this fucking game was so frustrating.

Basically all that game needs is patience and perseverance.
Super_Kami_Popo Yeah sure, if you have enough patience and perseverance you could also get through I Wanna Be The Guy. Its hardly a piece of cake to get through Dark Souls without prior knowledge/help though. The game's not designed to be a cake walk, so unless you have super fast reflexes / massive luck / prior knowledge of set pieces you're definitely not in for an 'easy time'.

DudicalDudeMan Yeah thats the main strategy to do it, combined with the initial hits you can do by throwing the weapons above his head, it becomes pretty less harder.

I played this game for so many hours, went through the whole game twice and I apparently still didn't have the right gear to fight the end boss. Incredibly frustrating, but once you memorize the game, it's easier. Good luck on the finale.

Ghost81 the game has unlimited continues until you get to the final boss.

easily one of the hardest games in the nintendo catalog...Capcom hit a home run with this one and i always remember as a kid never being able ot get past the second level but always still persisting and playing...glad to watch other people owning this god forsaken game

You could spend years to master the original. Very few ever complete one round, not even whole game.
I have to disagree. It is very hard but not quite as hard since you get epic armors for powering up and even a spare shield. The only serious downside to this game is limited continues compared to the original where you have infinite.
