How does the guy with chainsaw arms refuel his chainsaws? Or pull the cord to start them? Who put the bag on his head? He can't take it off, maybe that's why he's so pissed. I'd like to hear the full story on this guy.
No it's because James is tapping the button instead of holding it down. You would think he'd know, so many games back then had a half jump if you quickly tap the button, you only need to hold it for about half a second and you jump properly. Jesus these are hard to watch sometime.
this was one of my favorite games as a kid! Also, there's a lot more to the story than "you look like jason and kill monsters and stuff" it's got a classic yer car broke down in a storm start, you find a house and go inside to get out of the weather, then you and your girl are knocked out, when ya wake yer stuck with a cursed mask on yer face and girlfriend is missing! Now you have to make your way through the house which is full of abominations made by some mad scientist, who was killed by his own creations, to try to save your girl and remove the cursed mask. SPOILER : part way through the game you find out it's too late to save your girlfriend, she is turned by the monsters and becomes a badass monster herself you now have to defeat! This game had a pretty decent story in my opinion to go along with the awesome graphics for the late 80's early 90's and a great sound track that kept 8 year old me creeped out at night.
If you haven't, you should check out the arcade version of Splatterhouse. The TurboGrafx version is actually pretty heavily censored to remove even more gore, if you can believe it. Also if you all ever want to try this again later, you can do a sliding kick by jumping and pressing down and attack just before landing. It helps to get those enemies that hit you before you can get close to them.
When I was little this is what I always wanted the Friday the 13th game to be like XD Jason going around as Jason and pulverizing the ever loving shit out of anything with a pulse
Yeah I was the exact same, I would always pretend that you were playing as Jason as the Splatterhouse trilogy holds up way better than the Friday the 13th Saga? Franchise? Series? Decuplets? I'm not sure how to catagories them ;)
I bought a TurboGrafx several years ago and instantly broke it. I sat down and didn't notice the cord was so short. Pulled the system off the table, breaking the plug on the only controller I had.
3:02 This is why Mike was the real MVP of Cinemassacre. He was so dedicated to the videos that when he and James mentioned something off-hand like that, he made sure to go back and clarify for the audience afterwards. Mike's the man.
PC-Engine/Turbo Grafx. Highly underrated. Outsold the Genesis/Megadrive in Japan. Was a flop here. Thankfully, many of these games are available via PSN and Virtual Console, although it'd be nice to see them on the Wii U.
Like 1990s American Sega and the Saturn, NEC America and later Turbo Technologies had no clue how to market a console, and some of the best titles, which came out on CD, were left in Japan.
lolavex They cancelled WiFi services for games. Not sure about the Shop Channel. The Wii has the Shopping Channel. The eShop is a different, but similar service.
I agree with Mike, I'll take a wired controller over a battery one. I actually really like PS3's controller (Not sure if the PS4 does the same thing). The rechargeable battery in it that all you have to do is plug it into the system for awhile and let it recharge from time to time and you're set.
Both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers have available dock chargers for the rechargeable battery packs. What I've done is get two battery packs for my Xbox 360, and when one is low, I just switch it for the fresh one sitting on the dock. They each charge in only two hours, and last 35. A $40 investment, and well worth it if you hate constantly having to buy AA batteries for about $1 per battery.
doctor345678 That's still potentially $40 more than just getting 2 dual shock 3s (Assuming the battery pack is charged in a controller... Although reading it again, it may be that you charge the pack separately...in that case it's the same price as getting two DS3 controllers, roughly, so you've still got an extra controller...). The controllers seem to be roughly the same price, but you get the batteries built in with the PS3 controllers... It'd be better if they just made the 360 and Wii ones the same way, with batteries built in... Worst comes to worst, you can USB the controller while you wait for it to charge, assuming you don't need to sit too far from it... At least you can guarantee you'll be able to pause or whatever, if that's an issue. I wish my 360 controllers worked like that... There might be other issues with the internal batteries though... Not sure how easy it would be to replace them... They seem to last pretty well though, although I don't think they last anywhere near as long as 35 hours of playtime in one go, that might make the purchase worth it... Then again, for my PS3 I just use normal 6-axis controllers and swapping them out has never been much of a problem... Ah well, for now I'm doing ok with 6 rechargeable Duracell batteries and a four battery charger... Plus I have a wired 360 controller if I need it... With my set-up wired is generally better, but in a busy living area, having wires can be hazardous... lol My PS2 fell down a few times, I'm surprised it lasted so long... Still, it'd be good to have a wired option... Wii kinda has gamecube controller options, but that only works with limited games v_v Plugging the pro controller into the Wiimote is weird too lol Ah well, most people are probably better off with rechargeable batteries since they are generally way cheaper, multi-purpose and replacing individual batteries is probably easier than replacing a power pack that goes wrong, although I wouldn't expect that to come up much and changing the batteries is more annoying... Ah well, I say if we have to go wireless then the PS3/4 controller design is probably the better one (in terms of battery usage I mean, if nothing else... I prefer the layout of the Playstation style controllers, but that's a personal thing really, it'll obviously vary from person to person). Sorry I get carried away >_> I didn't mean to aim much of this directly at you specifically, it just kinda happened lol. That set-up sounds pretty neat, but if only you didn't have to buy it as an extra >_
People always complain about the short controller cords on older game consoles. But you have to think in the mindset of when the thing first came out. TVs weren't very big, and the picture quality wasn't great. So right off the bat, you were usually sitting closer to the tv, which means closer to the system. On top of that, kids that usually got the systems... a lot of times they're not gonna want to get up and down over and over to change a game, so they sit near the console. So at the time, cords didn't NEED to be longer. They didn't really expect people to be playing on big screen HDTVs from the other side of the room when they made the console.
My father picked up the Turbo16 when I was a kid right and later got the CD add on. It is the only system I STILL have from that era. I have some where between 10 - 30 games. Some of my favorite games are on this system including Ys Books 1&2. Thanks for the memories guys.
Wired controllers are always better. Wireless always has a delay, even if it's just 0.01 second. In some games, specially fight competitions, this makes the difference of winning or losing. Why do you think all fighting sticks come wired? :P
Man I loved that game when I was kid! Can't say I played it on a TurboGrafx-16, but they used to have the arcade at a pizza shack we went to. Nothing more fun when you're eight than playing gory video games and eating pizza.
I had this system and game as a kid. This game gave me the creeps and I would only play it during the day. It took me like a year to master the game and beat it. The level where you fight the mirror reflections of yourself blew my mind as a kid. Brings back fun memories. Thanks guys!
Watching James and Mike play games remind me of myself and my cousin playing the same old stuff. I suck as much as James, it's so funny when Mike just picks up the controller and nails it after James get stuck, happens in almost every game they play, either that or Mike kicks James' ass :D
This game was one of my favorites as a kid!!! You are right about Rick looking exactly like Jason Vorhees. The arcade AND japanese version (pc engine) had the actual white hockey mask, which was removed in the american version. Also, the reason James couldn't hop over the spike balls was because he had turbo switched on the hop button. And bringing both shotguns to the chainsaw guy is the only reasonable way to beat him. Just gotta get the timing down of all the enemies on that stage. The next stage is WAY harder than the one you left off on.
I love the GC controller, but I'll always be a fan of the original Xbox Duke controller. So. Fucking. Meaty. I love it! The S-controller was a worthy replacement for those with babby hands though.
I was fortunate enough to have a TG-16 when I was a kid and Splatterhouse was one of the first games I bought. James and Mike, u guys need to master the slide and jump kick cuz it will help out a lot !!! I always jumped and shot the "Bagman Boss" in the face for some reason and I still do to this day. I know it doesnt do any more damage but at first thats what i thought u had to do so it just became a habit. Im happy to see u guys give the Turbo sum love !!!!\ There were some of us that had this underrated system and loved it,the CDRom was awesome too, and my spoiled ass had that as well.
I loved my TG-16 as well. I've never (in person) met someone that had one. There was a game I had that was similar playstyle to the original Legend of Zelda, I can't remember the name of it though. I never did beat it either, wish I still had it so I could try to remedy that.
Neutopia was awesome. My older brothers birthday, my mom had me pick a game out for him. I chose neutopia (i was probably 9), and it was a wise choice. Best Zelda knockoff ever, and it would be nice for the franchise to get a reboot, or maybe just be released for wii, ps, or xbox arcade.
blackspiraldancer6 I would love a chance to play it again. There are a bunch of games I'd love to replay but I cannot find a working TG-16 emulator. And I don't have the money to try to buy a console and games.
Big_Mike81 Which surprises me greatly, honestly. When I get a game, I look up the controls. I don't care what anyone says - knowing HOW to play the game is kind of important and prevents silly rage moments that were your own fault.
Well he usually can't get the instructions for retro games and so how else would u know to hold the button? Most games use momentum to keep u going, instead of holding the button
TheLindseybk In super mario you hold the jump button to jump higher. I love james and mike as much as the next guy, but you can't really defend them here, they're pretty dumb when it comes to playing games.
I'm amazed on why this didn't become more popular back in the day. The TurboGrafix knew what they were doing! Gosh dang it! I wonder what video games would have been like today had the Turbografix won out on popularity.
NEC America didn't know how to market the console. In Japan they focused on marketing in large cities. While America does have large cities it's not as urban as Japan. A lot of the population still lives in suburbs or rural areas.
Loved Splatterhouse, I remember when I played it in the arcade my mother was shocked and dragged me away from the machine. She didn't realise that I had Splatterhouse 2 on the Genesis.
James is like the cool old nice grandpa who's likes playing old games with his silly rude grandson, Mike, who has to keep his grandpa informed on what all the kids are doin these days.
I had a tubografx 16 growing up. My dad was getting me a console from a coworker, and I thought it was going to be a genesis, turned out to be a tg-16, which I never heard about. It turned out to be pretty good, came with Keith courage and I got splatter house and bonks adventure which was the best.
I like wired controllers simply for piece of mind, you can't have latency issues with wired controllers and the no batteries thing is just another big plus.
***** indeed. Not that I'm responsible enough to wind it up when I'm done and don't have to worry about one of my siblings or parents walking past and knocking over the console, it's just wayyy simpler.
Cool other thing about the Turbografx16 game cards, if I remember correctly, is that they also fit into the portable version of the console. It's like being able to use the same cartridges for both the NES and Gameboy.
That jump part, you jump over the one coming from behind you, then jump again over the one coming from in front of you. I felt so accomplished when I figured that out as a kid... LOL
+Sly Cooper Just watched a video about it what the video says makes sense. The guy says it was probably because of hardware limitations, some of the gore wasn't in the game. It makes sense because a lot of background/foreground stuff like mutilated bodies were no in the console version.
Not that I know of off the top of my head. the TG16 version was edited to lose some (not too much) of its gore, mostly due to graphical limitations, and some things such as the church were made less obvious - e.g. you fight a flying head instead of an upside down cross, and there is less iconography in the chapel itself. It seems the early 90s and late 80s had a thing about possible religious offensiveness, which makes sense when you look at ghosts n goblins which turned crosses into shield (with crosses) or ankhs, and Doom which due to its satanic imagery created a lot of controversy. Yeah, you can probably tell, I truly love splatterhouse!
I bought a xbox charging dock station almost 3 years ago, and all I do is put the controller down and it charges in the station, I have never needed to change batteries.
it's still obnoxious having your game console take up more than one electrical outlet. you could count the TV, though since that's also used for other stuff (or at least it was) it doesn't really count.
ProtoMario and every time I see how much shit they have plugged in I feel worried about electrical fires. regardless, THEY might have more outlets than average, but my house only has like four electrical outlets. when you have to plug shit into the light fixtures you start worrying about how many outlets are being used by every single device you buy.
Bring back wires! and Nintendo does :). Soon we'll be able to use the glorious Nintendo Gamecube Controller again for the Wii U :). Nintendo.. understands older gamers. We are OLD WE KNOW EVERYTHING BETTER! *Tries to put on grumpy face and fails*
TurboGrafx is one of the best systems for import gaming. With games like Rondo of Blood, the best version of Double Dragon 2, as well as some great arcade ports and shoot-em-ups.
About the controller cord length. That's a Japanese thing. The Famicom and Super Famicom had exactly the same problem, and presumably the Sega Consoles did as well. For some reason, Japan assumed that you didn't need a controller length longer than four feet, but my guess is that it has to do with the size of Japanese homes. They assumed that you'd be seated close enough to the TV anyway. *shrug* I guess someone at NEC didn't do any market research of the North American video game market.
I'm betting the jump button had the turbo engaged. That would make you jump smaller I'd think. You guys really lost some retro game cred with this one lol. All good. Nice to see you finally give some love to the TG-16. I've had one since it came out in 1989.
***** If you want to see it that way. Personally, I don't find it fun to spend 30+ minutes replaying the same parts of a game over and over, only to die at the same point every time.
If you use quick saves in a game like this, it kinda ruins the challenge though. This is true for most arcades. A better option is to lower the difficulty level. This is possible at least in all(?) arcades on MAME at least.
Man, I was expecting a reference to HVGN. This is basically his baby. Splatterhouse is to the HVGN what Castlevania is to the AVGN. A pretty cool coincidental contrast between the two in terms of horror.
caprianders Really? The HVGN? The Happy Video Game Nerd? The only expy who was actually worthwhile and knew what he was doing? They were actually mutual subscribers back then.
Like James & Mike Mondays? See more game playthroughs with Mike on Twitch!

I get the feeling no one likes Twitch lol
I every single one man games are f****** dope
Did you guys play the xbox360 splatterhouse? It was a great throwback remake.
@@darylcarrier3137 It even pays homage to "Captain Mozzarella!" 🙃
James looked genuinely upset there
How does the guy with chainsaw arms refuel his chainsaws? Or pull the cord to start them? Who put the bag on his head? He can't take it off, maybe that's why he's so pissed. I'd like to hear the full story on this guy.
I love how nice Mike is at 5:40, he doesn't want to tell James it's easy so he just says he's getting lucky.
That's why we have to face the truth! James is bad player! ))
He is doing that in nearly every game they are playing :D
That's because its not easy, and he Is getting lucky.
No it's because James is tapping the button instead of holding it down. You would think he'd know, so many games back then had a half jump if you quickly tap the button, you only need to hold it for about half a second and you jump properly. Jesus these are hard to watch sometime.
That part is NOT easy. The jumping in the Splatterhouse games is terrible, and that section is probably the most frustrating part.
this was one of my favorite games as a kid! He DID
An appropriate reaction 🤔.
*I liked the sprites in these games. I hope they bring this franchise back ✅🙂*
There's a 2010 version on Xbox 360.
When I was little this is what I always wanted the Friday the 13th game to be like XD Jason going around as Jason and pulverizing the ever loving shit out of anything with a pulse

Yeah, this was the game back in the day. Playing this at the arcade got people's heads turning.
The TG16 version was censored. The best way to play Splatterhouse now is on the Namco Museum for the Switch. 100% arcade faithful.
The Japanese PC Engine version wasn’t censored either, just the US TurboGrafx 16 version was I think
Is it on the switch?
Splatter House for the PS3 was a fun time. Full on death metal soundtrack as well , particularly the Goatwhore track is a total stand out.

Well he usually can't get the instructions for retro games and so how else would u know to hold the button? Most games use momentum to keep u going, instead of holding the button
Good point, but they don't usually do that because it should be self explanatory
TheLindseybk In super mario you hold the jump button to jump higher.
I love james and mike as much as the next guy, but you can't really defend them here, they're pretty dumb when it comes to playing games.
I loved my Turbo grafx 16. Books adventure , splatter house , China warrior, so fun . BUT if you wanna see a super weird game check out JJ & Jeff 😂
I love this series (give or take the mediocre reboot). You're basically Jason beating monsters to a pulp. Nothing about that isn't awesome.
I'm amazed on why this didn't become more popular back in the day. The TurboGrafix knew what they were doing! Gosh dang it! I wonder what video games would have been like today had the Turbografix won out on popularity.
It's legacy lives on...in the PSVita
genesis and snes were pretty stiff competition.
NEC America didn't know how to market the console. In Japan they focused on marketing in large cities. While America does have large cities it's not as urban as Japan. A lot of the population still lives in suburbs or rural areas.
Chuck Norris was once involved in a knife fight. The knife lost.
The dog licked the oil everyone laughed
"Right in the C🌜NT" 🤣🤣
Loved Splatterhouse, I remember when I played it in the arcade my mother was shocked and dragged me away from the machine.
She didn't realise that I had Splatterhouse 2 on the Genesis.
Y'all were like such little kids for the last 3 minutes. That was great. Do more TurboGrafx!!
James is like the cool old nice grandpa who's likes playing old games with his silly rude grandson, Mike, who has to keep his grandpa informed on what all the kids are doin these days.
I bought this system in 92 just for fun. Wish I would have kept it. Loved this game. Thanks for reviewing guys.
Sounds like some new material for a AVGN Halloween special.
Watching this a whole 5 years from when it was published....what a day.
And?
jason's blood lust is so powerful he can kill demons, zombies, and even knifes all in another universe
Because Jason
fandude666 That's not Jason.
Was waiting for James to start repeating "get the knife get the knife!"
If there is a game
That you cant beat
Who you gonna call?
Call Bootsy! I smell a retry video next monday :)
smells like gunpowder lead wood and guts!
6:07 Give "Jason" a flashlight and you have Alan Wake right there 😂
These don't need to be this cut down. I'd prefer if you make 'em 20 minutes if you can.
This game NEEDS A MOVIE! ^_^ I would SO see it!!!! -_- with OLD school creative affects, of course. ^_^
This game was supposed become Friday the 13th. But for some reason they lost a license and released as Splatterhouse
I had a tubografx 16 growing up. My dad was getting me a console from a coworker, and I thought it was going to be a genesis, turned out to be a tg-16, which I never heard about. It turned out to be pretty good, came with Keith courage and I got splatter house and bonks adventure which was the best.
I want to see Cinemassacre beat this game!!! C'mon! It's made for this channel! :D
Loved playing this game when I was around 9yrs old. You guys have to beat this game
This system was bad ass! underrated in america
James & Mike Mondays is taking great form as a show
There's two sequels; Splatterhouse 2 and Splatterhouse 3 on the Genesis/Mega Drive.
The remake of ps3 and xbox 360 has splatterhouse 1,2,3 if im not mistaken.. 3 is the way to go imo
Don't forget the prequel Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti for Famicom.
Splatterhouse 2: The Splattening
Splatterhouse 3: Revelations
Splatterhouse 2009 REMAKE
This is basically the conventions for sequel making
FedorovAvtomat Wanpaku has a fan translation.
I played splatter house It could have been arcade but I'm not sure but I'm so happy to see this game like 20 years later!!! Awesome.
Now that I'm a functioning adult, I love using wired controllers. Prefer them actually.
Winding them up can actually damage the cord, sorry for the late reply btw but two of my wired controllers broke from being wrapped up to tight
Cool other thing about the Turbografx16 game cards, if I remember correctly, is that they also fit into the portable version of the console. It's like being able to use the same cartridges for both the NES and Gameboy.
And I'm watching this on Friday The 13th
Spooky scary skeletons
That jump part, you jump over the one coming from behind you, then jump again over the one coming from in front of you. I felt so accomplished when I figured that out as a kid... LOL
The arcade version was gorier.
You can play the unedited version (plus 2 and 3) on the 2010 game
I forgot that game had the original games on it, didn't realize the Turbografx version was edited
+Sly Cooper Just watched a video about it what the video says makes sense. The guy says it was probably because of hardware limitations, some of the gore wasn't in the game. It makes sense because a lot of background/foreground stuff like mutilated bodies were no in the console version.
Gamesta100 I think I might pick up the 2010 Splatterhouse just for that.
+Sly Cooper I love the 2010 version. The original games was just icing on the cake for me.
You have to play the arcade version!! Way better music and gore. It's disgusting!!! Love it!
PsylomeAlpha
I can understand where your coming from; however those guys have plenty of outlet space, as seen they have alot of extra expansions.
ProtoMario
and every time I see how much shit they have plugged in I feel worried about electrical fires. regardless, THEY might have more outlets than average, but my house only has like four electrical outlets. when you have to plug shit into the light fixtures you start worrying about how many outlets are being used by every single device you buy.
ProtoMario There's always the option of a power strip, too.
"Is that somebody's wallet?" Made me laugh out loud
TurboGrafx is one of the best systems for import gaming. With games like Rondo of Blood, the best version of Double Dragon 2, as well as some great arcade ports and shoot-em-ups.
I love the freakouts in this vid...nice work!
One of my all-time favorites.
Wired controllers are better. Batteries are bullshit.
+Inazuma65 Why won't it let me view the replies?
this was a great game for its time. i remember these when i was a kid.. this game would spook me out.
I'm betting the jump button had the turbo engaged. That would make you jump smaller I'd think. You guys really lost some retro game cred with this one lol. All good. Nice to see you finally give some love to the TG-16. I've had one since it came out in 1989.
Mike does what Jamesdon't - the jumping sequence.
"durrrr, durrrrr, durrrrr"
"what were you like"
"durrrrr, durrrrr"
lolzzzzzzzzzzzz
Back to the Beach... That whole thing with Surely/Shirley and Knife/Nice was masterful.
Would love to see you guys play the Splatterhouse remake for the xbox 360 and ps3, it even has all of the old games on it as well :D
Damn it has the old games? I'll have to look out for that disc.
"Just when you thought you had beaten A CHAIR...Now you encounter...
THE COMFY CUSHIONS!"
Any continues left? Nope.
That's why I love emulators with save states.
***** If you want to see it that way. Personally, I don't find it fun to spend 30+ minutes replaying the same parts of a game over and over, only to die at the same point every time.
I prefer saves also but one fucking life
I prefer saves also but one fucking life
If you use quick saves in a game like this, it kinda ruins the challenge though. This is true for most arcades. A better option is to lower the difficulty level. This is possible at least in all(?) arcades on MAME at least.
I see how that works
I used to play this game soo much in the arcades. I actually finish the game. And this is why I love gore movies and games.
Man, I was expecting a reference to HVGN. This is basically his baby.
Splatterhouse is to the HVGN what Castlevania is to the AVGN. A pretty cool coincidental contrast between the two in terms of horror.
Hungry video game nerd?
caprianders Really? The HVGN? The Happy Video Game Nerd? The only expy who was actually worthwhile and knew what he was doing?
They were actually mutual subscribers back then.
Ethan Byford I love the Hungry Video Game Nerd. He's gonna take you back to the past. To play some shitty games and eat mom's spaghetti.
I loved this game as a kid.
What about Takeshi´s challenge?
I don't they hate themselves quite enough yet....
No, we don't want James and Mike to end up like Jon, NOT AGAIN!!!
Oh, I started playing that game in 2010... I'm not sure what year it is right now, but I don't think it's the same year.
...who are you?
One of my all time favorite games!
