17:21 That fight was intense! You could hear James mashing the buttons and I think it was even closer than they realize because he almost ran out of time.
+BullsEye3333 Haha yeah, i just noticed that after reading your comment, if Mike & James were aware of it at that time, that wouldve even made it more intense, 6 seconds left is pretty close.
lol, I guess this is part of the reason I can't help but like the AVGN videos. There's just a genuine quality to them. Like the way James just goes crazy with the effort of making a tough jump "EHHHHHNNNNN!, or the way he says he actually felt that last hit from Abobo. It's nostalgic, I guess. Just takes me back to the days when I played these games and lived and died with every victory and defeat. This video just puts a smile on my face.
Wow this brings back memories of when I was young in the 80's and would root for my older brother to beat this game, then goof off on the vs mode. Thanks for doing this guys!
I think this was the first NES game I flung across the room out of anger of losing during my youth. Mission 3 and beyond is like screw you, shit-switch is flipped, you're on your own. Fly like an eagle.
+autumnsarsenal Wait a minute, James and Mike had a five digit score when they said that, so it's not like insanely far off... *HOLY SHIT LUCAS RACKED UP 50K WITH THE WILLIAMSES TRICK I JUST FIGURED IT OUT!*
@bee boo well I can't really argue with you since it's all subjective but I've played a lot of games and the music in this game just impresses me for a NES game
This is your best J&M Monday episode yet, along with Perfect Dark(I mean Goldeneye). I loved how you actually gave it your all to the point of frustration. THAT'S what we want to see! And you guys had tons of fun along the way too.
There is a bunch of games on nes I didn't beat as a kid and then years later I beat them as an adult. Double dragon is one of them. Classic game I love it. I beat it every year or so now and it's really fun. Very nostalgic. The music always makes me smile. "Watch out for the knives" (juke moves directly into the knife)
another great quote from James and Mike, reminded me of some girl i knew... someone must make a compilation of J&M quotes "let´s fukcing do this.." is another from Mike
Of everything y'all have done, this has honestly brought me the most joy. It was like I was experiencing my childhood all over again. Thank you so much.
Double Dragon 2 has the best attack; you jump, and after landing and before the character getting up, you jump again, making a jumping knee kick. That thing is so brutal is really fun to attack with, even the sound it makes. I'm hoping for a Double Dragon 2 James & Mike Mondays.
***** Back in the day when my brother and I got that game, there was Saint Seiya airing for the first time. There's a technique called 'Rozan Shoryu Ha' and the translation was "Ascending Dragon." Naturally we called that move in DD2 ascending dragon, because it's so powerful that you may be able to stop a waterfall like in the animation. We still play it from time to time. Good times.
Yeah, i used to call it a knee flurry, remember using that for later in the game. Also cheaped out when playing solo, and start with 2pb i think, as you kill your partner you gain his lives so after that you can start the game with 8 lives instead of 4, something like that.
One of the best episodes of J&M imo. Such a blast of nostalgia haha. A real visceral experience too. I’ve never felt more tense watching James play something lol.
Finishing off those Abobo's in the woods with no health was CLUTCH. The key to the game is getting to the last level without losing a life, then getting past the bricks. All downhill from there.
Noah Hopkins I am by no means degrading Patthenespunk, but he has only half what I have, and he plays with James, and are even in his videos too. Nothing wrong with that, just noting size never matters. =)
Thanks for the help Mike, I remember my brother showing me the bat trick 25 years ago and forgot all about it. Good video guys, I like it when you guys play games you enjoy. I really appreciate seeing you guys have fun and share your personal memories for games like this instead of games you don't like. Leave those to the Nerd.
Double Dragon 1&2 was one of my favorite video games of all time .. I could just remember me going to the arcade room and spinning a lot of quarters playing this game .
I was hoping for a reference to The Wizard, and was not disappointed. As much as that film gets trashed for its poor story and unnecessary character development ("Show me the games!"), just the idea that video games had a supporting role in the film was/is great. I watch it more often than I should probably admit to in a public forum. As for the NES version of Double Dragon, it's one of my favorite ports. I like the RPG-lite element of leveling up your character and having him learn new moves; it's a bit deeper than the coin-op original in that regard. There's also a great soundtrack here. Finally: I didn't know about that glitch Mike mentioned until now. I'll have to use this!
NintendoWolf88 It's hard to tell with the written word sometimes. I thought they were serious at first, you get used to seeing stupid comments on here, it can get confusing.
15:30 I've had that happen a few times, like the game hadn't finished loading the next part. Like done here, just go back down the previous ladder, and it fixes itself. As for the sliding blocks parts, the thing I learned was that if you get as close to the edge of the floor without falling off, you can literally walk past them without getting hit.
Funny you mentioned the part with the Door "Imagine You didn't know you had to go into the Door..." Well that was me. I used to Play Double Dragon on Arcade and on the Arcade there are no doors so when I played it on NES I didn't know what the fuck was going on as I kept scrolling the screen to the right. I ended up turning off the game in frustration and never played or bough it again (back when it was a new game) I own the game now, picked it up years later to add to my collection. hehe
Oh wow.. I never knew what the hearts were for in this game as a kid. I never really made the connection that some of the seemingly random new attacks I was doing had anything to do with them! I also never really got far enough along to get six or seven hearts to get the elbow or roundhouse kick they were talking about either! o.O ...guess I better dust off my NES again and try it out! :D EDIT: Jeez.. I never knew to go in the cave on level 3 either! I always had too much trouble with the two Abobos.
Single Dragon. Heh. Speaking of, I always feel singled-out when people reminisce over the NES game. As a kid, I dropped so many quarters in the arcade version before I even owned an NES or saw that version of it. When I finally got my hands on the NES version, it's not like I expected the graphics to be as good, but... Single player? The weapons disappearing after a few uses? _What a shitload of fuck._ I understand that is kind of my own unique experience, and if you didn't grow up falling in love with an arcade game that was at the pizza place right by your house... (Like who the fuck are "Billy and Jimmy"? That's Hammer and Spike; it said it right there on the artwork by the buttons, duh...)Then the NES version probably seemed pretty cool.
Kool J Yeah, that one is a pretty straight-forward port from the arcade if I recall. I have to agree; DD II arcade didn't make any real improvements (besides maybe less lag on a full screen) and DD III arcade was an absolute abomination! Usually video game sequels get better... but DD arcade seemed to want to follow the sequel quality trend of movies.
I think I wanna try my hand at this game again. Thanks for another great video. It was obvious how much you connect with this game.I hope you make a episode of you finally beating it.
Such proof of simple gameplay and really well made because it was actually fun.. I miss the fun and innovation of the early days of gaming, this game is definantly a gem, great video boys
Man I played this game a lot as a kid. I chuckled when you went up the ladder thing and fell so the whip was still up there, I used to do the exact thing.
I was inspired by this video, so I put Double Dragon into my top loader. After getting to the random jutting wall bullshit and dying on my last life, I started again and beat the game. Willie was tough because the bastard kept running away when I would try to pin him in the corner. I kept having to weave up and down in hopes that he wouldn't shoot, and he never did. I kept kicking him, grabbing him by the hair, and filling his face full of knees. The last boss is actually pretty simple. He just takes a lot of abuse. My first fight with him ended because of the game's stupid timer, but I got him on my second try. I kept kicking him and landed three spin kicks. I got in a good, uninterrupted series of punches, too. Throw in a ton of jump kicks and a few back elbows, and it's a victory for me.
Oh god the memories! I was exactly the same when I played this game as a kid, such an intense game if you die before you reach the cave you may as well start again. Managed to get to the machine gun guy a few times but never beat it. So frustrating but was a great game and I loved the music. Thanks for the vid, would love to see one on Tecmo world wrestling on the NES that was another really frustrating game for me! Keep up the good work guys!
Beat me to it. Let me add that you can do the elbow by keeping your back to them and hitting punch when they get close. Friend showed me that when I was a kid. :)
Man I remember this game and seeing these guys play also reminds me of my frustration playing and never beating the game. I was glad to see this game come out on the Wii U e-shop. Downloaded it quick and picked back up on my frustrations lol.
Mike perfectly encapsulates that moment when your round a friends house and they're fucking pissed at the game but all you can do is just awkwardly sit there in fear that anything you say could channel their rage over to you.
James was really into this one. I remember how that felt as a kid with actual limited lives. Every time you get hit your like "Ugghh!". Was also funny seeing them mess around in the 2P part. That's about how me an friends played games like that too.
Like James & Mike Mondays? See more game playthroughs with Mike on Twitch!

It's so funny to see these guys having a blast. Makes me wish I had a BFF like that.

Couldn’t agree more
BFF? What are you a 12 year old girl?

12:11 James is SO into the game that he has to yell at Mike: "Count my hearts! Count my hearts!" X'D
How to beat Double Dragon
Step 1: GAME GENIE
Step 2: RED BULL
Step 3: GET THE KNIFE
Step 0: GROW SIDEBURNS!
Step 4: PROFIT
Step 5: GET 50,000 POINTS, GRAB YOUR CELL PHONE, TAKE A PICTURE OF THE TV AND TEXT IT TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS WHILE MAKING REFERENCES TO ‘THE WIZARD’.
lmao
I beat it once, then could never do it again lol.
I really like how you can feel they are having real fun playing these games xD I miss playing games like that with my friends.
What's stopping you?
lol, I guess this is part of the reason I can't help but like the AVGN videos. There's just a genuine quality to them. This isn't part of the AVGN series though
"He's too big to mount" That had me laughing for a while.
That ending is absolutely hilarious!
LOL
OMG Yes!!
Lovin' those half mutten chops, James!
Indeed.
hey max make some prank videos.

One of the greatest James & Mike Mondays so far!
the music in this game is amazing
+omegaweapon116 nothing else comes close to the double dragon theme.
@bee boo well I can't really argue with you since it's all subjective but I've played a lot of games and the music in this game just impresses me for a NES game
Still the best soundtrack to any Double Dragon game. DDII was the better game, but the original's soundtrack is way better.

This is your best J&M Monday episode yet, along with Perfect Dark(I mean Goldeneye).
I loved how you actually gave it your all to the point of frustration. THAT'S what we want to see! And you guys had tons of fun along the way too.
Wait, when did they do Perfect Dark?
They didn't do Perfect Dark, although I would love that, it's my favourite video game.
MediaGold When they were in college, probably.
They played Golden Eye, I'd love to see them play Perfect Dark with the pinball grenades and laptop gun sentries though.

Yeah it was Goldeneye. Sorry guys, had a major brain fart there
Best video ever! Mike + James = magic
Thanks!

you guys should play River City Ransom

This game aslo has many glitches that can be pull like magic with Billy Lee.

I was wondering how to do that knee kick. Thank you, sir.
That move was mad easy to do with a turbo fire controller. Really that was the only way to play that game.
Walter White But it feels awesome when you do it on command without turbo. That's how I roll.
Yeah, i used to call it a knee flurry, remember using that for later in the game. Also cheaped out when playing solo, and start with 2pb i think, as you kill your partner you gain his lives so after that you can start the game with 8 lives instead of 4, something like that.

It says TJC (Techno Japan Corp, or the company that made the game)
@Rensune I've always wondered why the boxes said TJC on them, but that actually makes sense.
Double Dragon 1&2 was one of my favorite video games of all time .. I could just remember me going to the arcade room and spinning a lot of quarters playing this game .
That fight was intense as fuck. i had to remind my self to breathe
Man I was so addicted to this game back when I was 8 years old. I would get up 2 hours before school started just to play it more.
You guys bring me back ..I remember these games and at the time they would new lol ..crazy ..thank you guys.
This game was a favorite of mine.
Double Dragon's shadow knee kick - with accompanying sound effect - is probably the most awesome/violent move I've ever seen.
I was hoping for a reference to The Wizard, and was not disappointed. As much as that film gets trashed for its poor story and unnecessary character development ("Show me the games!"), just the idea that video games had a supporting role in the film was/is great. “The Wizard” is every 80’s gamers’ guilty pleasure! Myself included!
When they're talking about the plot of The Wizard, I can't help thinking we'll be saying the same thing about their movie.
Is it out yet? ( i'm sorta new to the channel.
Yeah! Nobody wants to see Jame's epic adventure... we just want to see E.T footage!

We can always hope that they'll give it updates regularly.
just download the games u can download 27 more games online
Jake Bishop lol
15:30 I've had that happen a few times, like the game hadn't finished loading the next part. Like done here, just go back down the previous ladder, and it fixes itself.
As for the sliding blocks parts, the thing I learned was that if you get as close to the edge of the floor without falling off, you can literally walk past them without getting hit.
Remember River City Ransom? NES!
RCR is also two player...
Super Dodge ball
RCR is brilliant. Nintendo World Cup (the most hilarious soccer game) was based on RCR.
That’s an Nes Nintendo online
This is the funniest video released on this channel in a long time.... was great to see James and Mike playing something they truly enjoy.
Funny you mentioned the part with the Door "Imagine You didn't know you had to go into the Door..." Well that was me. +Kool J super double dragon is a fantastic game especially if you get the harder version
Brings back alot of memories. I was playing "bad dudes" the other day on an original arcade setup, soo fun.
I remember the nerd saying he could beat double dragon without dying more than once. He said it in the double dragon 3 review.
I think I wanna try my hand at this game again. Thanks for another great video. It was obvious how much you connect with this game.I hope you make a episode of you finally beating it.
14:28 genuine rage
it's so much fun rewatching these videos
"Watch out for the knives!"
Immediately gets a knife in the head 🤦♂️😂
Battletoads and Double Dragon. Two of the hardest NES games of all-time. No coincidence that they both starred in the same game.
Fun fact: Enemy’s names are from Bruce Lee’s masterpiece “Enter the Dragon 🐉 ”
This here sir is a masterpiece...
Take chin for example
@@blustickman0285 There was no character called Chin in Enter The Dragon.
Such proof of simple gameplay and really well made because it was actually fun.. I miss the fun and innovation of the early days of gaming, this game is definantly a gem, great video boys
I've got this game on the SEGA master system and it's two player. Just another example of SEGA does what NintenDON'T!
The Master System Version is bad......regardless having 2 player.
But actually, NES had 2 player too. Making this game a ported version.
The masters system was dope a lot ppl don’t remember DD bein on there but I do nd BOBOs were red colored too great times
The Master System version is so much better!
No way. Sega was cool but was definitely inferior to the NES. Everyone knows that.
Love that shirt James! Got to see that tour back in September of 97 with openers Coal Chamber and Machine Head.
Niiice!! Like mondays only for this!
true,
its like the only thing worth living
Man I played this game a lot as a kid. I chuckled when you went up the ladder thing and fell so the whip was still up there, I used to do the exact thing.
you should play Zombies ate my neighbors for SNES in a 2 playes mode its a really hard game, its harder than a solo mode. i love your videos.
The story of James's dad and the hammer is like, wow, that was the birth of the Nerd.
Ending was hilarious! rofl
I was inspired by this video, so I put Double Dragon into my top loader. After getting to the random jutting wall bullshit and dying on my last life, I started again and beat the game.

If I remember correctly, in the vs mode when fighting the CPU, your opponent has nearly twice as much health as you do.
I don't know if they read this much but here's some feed back. I like how you guys do the cuts with Mikey keep up the good work.
Elbow the Abobos 4 times each and they're finished.
Beat me to it. Let me add that you can do the elbow by keeping your back to them and hitting punch when they get close. Friend showed me that when I was a kid. :)
sdhubbard Yeah man. It's either that or the 7 Heart roundhouse kicks that take them out.
Thanks fellas for bring back my childhood. I was born in 80's
Those Abobos, just walk in front of them at an angle and back elbow when they come into range.
+Bill Beerstein he didn't have enough hearts to do the elbow.
Mike is awesome! He is totally underrated by most of the fans, and of course, James is most deserving of the credit but we must not forgot Mr. Matei!

James was really into this one. I remember how that felt as a kid with actual limited lives. Every time you get hit your like "Ugghh!". Was also funny seeing them mess around in the 2P part. That's about how me an friends played games like that too.
