How is it "objectively better"? The point of a video game is to make you enjoy it. If Earthbound peaked your enjoyment more than Mother 3 did, than for you, Earthbound was a better game. For me, Earthbound was WAY more fun and memorable. Also, Mother 3 didn't bring anything new to the table. Earthbound was extremely innovative and influential, while Mother 3 was easier and way too plot heavy. Not to say the plot was bad, because the writing is great, but still.

100% agree. Earthbound made me feel like a kid again and restored my faith in the world. Mother 3 took all that away. Both are amazing games, playing Earthbound before Mother 3 made the latter hit way harder. I like to think the series is called Mother because mothers are the ultimate symbol for unconditional love. If you don't call your mother regularly in Earthbound, Ness will get depressed. Mother 3 is all about the absence of that love, having no one to turn to when you're sad, being forced to leave your childhood behind before you're ready to do so.
I call my mother a lot more since i've played them.

There's a lot of grinding in the beginning and the story takes a while to pick up, but that's just how many NES and SNES games were. But I feel like the first 2 games (*especially* Mother 1) have a level curve that's just a bit too steep, because you don't have money or xp and there's enemies that can actually kill (i.e. Skate punks), so to be able to counter that you need to grind up a bit on the stray dogs and all that (that sounds terrible OOC ;_;)

Objectively, both games are great. It's just the fact that they are so different compared to each other, and this is what separes Earthbound-lovers and Mother 3 fans. However,I personally think Mother 3 is sort of better written that EB(please do not attack me,opinions are not reasons of fighting). Just thinking about the huge work Itoi and company did to launch this game would do(almost 12 years, suffering such a development hell is not easy, really). But...there is something special about this one. Being the darkest out of the 3 installments in the MOTHER franchise,Mother 3 tries to combine the utopia(in its two states, perfection and evil) with the sufferings people go through for ages to be stronger, and age really doesn't count(see Lucas' story). And it does that succesfully. But,it still has the humour Earthbound did, using both children-themed jokes(Jar of Yummy Pickles, you'd rather find this in a cartoon, right?)and adult-oriented ones(if I am not wrong, there is a guy you met during the three Porky games who says something about your fly being out?)And then there is Earthbound. It's a more "American" game,in the matter of the fact that you've got anything you want:cops, knives(Franky, got it?) and so on...

    • @sonic40001
      @sonic40001 7 лет назад +3

It's really quirky, and it is unique within its...cartoonish...style. But still, the only mature thing I honestly found there is Porky's case. He was so unlucky,he got some quite crazy parents, lacking any sort of love, trying to get Ness' attention from simple conversing,to kidnapping Paula and anything else you want to imagine. And the Mu training(screwing eyeballs, remember?) It's meant,in my opinion,to be just like an American,90's movie:horror combined with jokes and anything quirky and even romantism.
So...it's hard to say,but I still come to the idea that Mother 3 surely is more deep and does what EB doesn't. The first imagines a surrealistic world, offering sollutions when it comes to tragedies some people have to go through, while the latter is,in its own way,an image of the actual society.
      End of story.

I find it pretty insane you said Earthbound is overrated. Aside from it's pretty small online following, the game has had next to no recognition outside of Smash & having 2 of the games put on the eShop. I can understand your other complaints, they are things that every Mother fan knows. Like you, when I first started playing Earthbound I put down the game for months after an hour or so of gameplay out of boredom. The slow start is a failure of game design. But when I picked it back up, I wondered why I even quit playing it originally.
The game has something no other game I've ever played has, and I don't know what it is. The charm, the artstyle (although it is somewhat amateur), scenery or what. It has never been replicated in my opinion, not even in Mother 3. I love Mother 3 a LOT. But it has always been barely nudged out by Earthbound in a contest of which game I personally like more.
It's not rose tinted nostalgia goggles, either. I first played Earthbound in 2013 when it was released on the Wii U virtual console, and subsequently played Mother 3 a few months after that on an emulator. What I'm trying to say is that I think your points have a lot of foundation, but I can't help but believe you are over blowing them. Earthbound is a game I've always liked to immerse myself in.
The universe it is set in is so different from a lot of JRPGs at the time. The design of some of the enemies is A++, ESPECIALLY Giygas' alien servants. The subtle pop culture references are the icing on the cake. They are there but just spread out enough to not be in your face. Something like the sampling taken from various influential artists or the really minor dialogue that you can easy miss if you're not paying attention is the perfect way to reference anything, and Earthbound really nails that aspect.

    • @MrMariobrosrocks
      @MrMariobrosrocks 7 лет назад +26

I should also add that Earthbound being mysterious is part of the theme. The player is left to decide the majority of personality for each character, the background story for each enemy or scene, whatever. The game literally ends with YOU (Yes, you. Not Ness, not Paula, not Jeff or Poo) saving the universe. When Paula's prayers are absorbed by darkness and nothing else can save the group & universe, the player does. You can dismiss that as a lazy writing cop-out, and you'd have a point, but that's just what I've always felt while playing Earthbound. Like I said, the designs of stuff (The Shamblers, Mooks, Starmen, etc) are all unique and stand out from a lot of your generic video game JRPG enemies.
I feel as if in Mother 3, the game loses a lot of it's creativity and imagination and replaces it with a really strong, hard hitting plot. It's for that reason that whenever I replay Mother 3 (which I have done more times than Earthbound) I try not to judge it as Earthbound 2 but rather it's own thing entirely. It's a game that improved everything wrong with the previous game in terms of gameplay itself but still managed to do it's own thing, and it did it well.
A few comments down +FullmetalGhoul perfectly describes what I mean. It's not just wacky for the sake of being wacky, Earthbound seriously succeeds in being a whimsical experience. In his words, "Earthbound feels like it was written and directed by someone with the talent of a wise adult and the mindset and energy of a child.". It's not childish, it's not adult. It's a perfect mix. It's imaginative in a way that has yet to be replicated by any other game (in my opinion).
Look into the development story for Earthbound if you don't already know it, it'll make you appreciate the final product even more. The game was literally made with nothing but love and joy.

There's a lot of people who love EB more for it's nostalgia factor.
You must *REALLY* like NES games to like Mother 1 more than Earthbound. That game is unfair and a bit tedious (good for an NES game though). Do you like Zelda II too? On an unrelated note, I'm trying to play through that game on the 3DS VC *without save states* or walkthroughs (although I've gleaned information from my last playthrough where I had both), and I'm feeling the pain. 20+ tries to get to the final boss(es) and I've only gotten Thunderbird about half down so far. I made the mistake of not grinding for levels and now I don't have the magic for Shield or Jump, and I'm no longer in a position to get XP safely. I would have been able to finish it in like 4 days.
Also I defeated Dark Link without the crouch and stab method last time, although I used save states (so does it really count? still took me 3+ hours)

    -more pleasant visuals
    -dash mechanic
    -way better plot
    -less grinding
    -better pacing
-hot springs being way more convenient than hospitals
    -more strategy involved in battles
-more interaction in battles with the rhythm mechanic
    -characters are more interesting
    -way more powerful message
-better map design (harder to get lost)
-doesn't copy tons of aspects and designs from its prequel
-he beginning of the game isn't completely awful and unbalanced
Really, all Earthbound has over Mother 3 is it's music (which is debatable), the auto-battle mechanic, and getting exp by instantly defeating low-level enemies. You have to be nostalgiablind or bias against new things to think EarthBound is better than its sequel

I don't think we should compare the music between Mother 2 and 3 because they have drastically different styles. Compare "Battle Against a Weird Foe" to "Hard Rain". Mother 2's music was awkward but melodically interesting. Mother 3 had music that sounded more normal and modern. I personally think they're both great across each game; they just felt different.

I get your opinion, however, I personally prefer EarthBound for its non-linearity and almost parody-like story. Mother 3 actually tried to focus more on the plot but at the cost of being linear as hell as well as occasionally being cliched. Additionally, I found Mother 3 to be more grindy than EarthBound. I never had to grind in EarthBound and I found it very easy, however with Mother 3 I almost always had to grind before every boss after Chapter 3. However, both games are in my top 15 favourite games of all time and this is a very good video, I just like blatantly shoving my opinion down people's throats XD

Amen. Mother 3 lacked the child like wonder and awe of Earthbound. The heavy story didn't allow for the humor and quirkiness to be as easily digested. Also the world didn't feel as relatable as Eagleland. I could continue my rant but, needless to say, I'm glad someone agrees with me on this. Still both great games though.

For me, I think that Earthbound and Mother 3 are trying to be different games.
Earthbound isn’t really focused on an engaging narrative. There’s almost no character development for our party members and the main conflict with Giygas is almost never at the forefront. These are things I look for in RPGs and other story based games, but Earthbound, from almost the very beginning, sets itself apart as a game that doesn’t care about that; rather than a captivating story, it’s a game that just does whatever the heck it wants. It’s humor, quirkiNESS, and emotions are at the forefront, and as such, I don’t like to judge it on a basis that I judge other, more story-driven RPGs. Why say that it’s a failure at something it was never trying to be?
For me, Earthbound’s strengths lie in it’s world, writing, and bat-shit crazy scenarios. The beginning of the game is no doubt frustratingly hard (basically everything up until Happy Happy Village, and even after that it will still kick you in the balls on occasion), but on my first playthrough, I always felt like Earthbound’s stronger elements were so good that I wanted to keep going and see what happens next. It also helps that with Earthbound, I never felt the need to grind (and this might vary from player to player). I always felt that, even if I got my ass kicked, I was still at the very least capable of conquering whatever challenge was ahead.
I don’t blame you for not enjoying earthbound as much. I love it, and I recommend it to everyone I can, but overhype can kill anything, which makes me sad. And depending on the person, you may not favor the good aspects to bad aspects ratio. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy Earthbound, but I’m glad you at least gave it a shot and enjoy mother 3 🙂

Possibly because of it's unique charm: Surrealism, exclusive humor, cybernetics
As previous comments state, MOTHER 3 lost the uniqueness ( besides humor and a fraction of cybernetics ) that was discovered by Earthbound and substitutes it for an interesting story.

    • @unpseudonyme

I thought Mother was too linear. You always know where to go, you don t have a huge world to explore and go back to. You don t really have to talk to everyone to have a clue about where to go next, and that s what I like about Earthbound. You were in this huge world where you had so many funny quirky dialogues. And you had some emotional bits too, especially at the end. Also the enemies and settings were more memorable and I thought the game was prettier. I do agree that Mother 3 has a better storyline and is very emotional but it s a totally different kind of game and I just missed running around in a huge world not knowing where to go next and crazy locations like Magicant ,Moonside or the Happy Happy village.

Cuilleron Claire All great points! One of my favorite changes in Mother 3 was that it always has a sense of direction and plot relevence, but it makes sense that some people wouldn't like the linearity. I mean, the whole island in Mother 3 is basically one big line (which I loved). There was definitely a bigger emphasis on discovery in EB. I can understanding liking the game more for that.

save the fact that earthbound was released 12 years earlier - its beauty and brilliance comes from how open to interpretation the story was and the hidden “depth”. it is extremely easy to miss by the intentional use of children, goofiness, nonsensical elements, etc., but this is done intentionally to try and hide the actual seedy world of earthbound. it is actually extremely dark and an amazing story of good and evil, of growing up and of sacrifice. earthbound was way ahead of its time in dealing with real-life issues and conflicts and this why, for many, it goes down as one of the greatest rpg’s of all time - not because of its mechanics, but because of its story. unfortunately, this is also why it was not well received in the US due to its “hidden” deeper meaning.

I mean, you're entitled to your opinions... that's all good... but I and everything I've asked, who's played earthbound, became emotionally attached to the characters more so than most other games. I think your review would be like someone reviewing Pong now... I can see it now... "Pong sucks, how can anyone think that game is fun, it's horrible compared to COD" or some other non-sense. Jason Cox Personally, I play most games for actual gameplay, and that's why I didn't like RPGs until a few years ago. But I have also come to appreciate story driven games such as Undertale, and of course Mother 3. With Earthbound, sure I enjoy the quirky vibe of everything in that game, but the actual story really is bare bones, and I didn't find myself truly invested until I was about 3 quarters through the game. But with games like Paper Mario, I can look past that due to the gameplay which really pulls me in! But I really find Earthbound's battle system bland, until again, you get through 3 quarters of the game. I'm not saying Earthbound is bad, but Mother 3 just does the story, battle system, and almost everything else better. I feel like if earthbound took place in a fantasy setting, it would go unnoticed. Of course, this is just MY opinion

I would rate it as the most influential game in my life because it was so different. And Mother 3 was more difficult for me but I have only played the first 20 minutes of it.. If you really want to play a challenging game, go for Earthbound Hallows End( I highly recommend that one) or the Halloween Earthbound hack by Toby Fox. And Earthbound as a game, (meaning game play and all that jazz) is okay. I understand what you are saying about it lacking as a "game". But so many games now are just like every other game. It is annoying to me (not to mention a deal breaker). However, the story of Earthbound always kept me captivated. it felt like a drug-induced trip when I was playing this game as a kid because it is so different. It gave me the feels.

Anyways, Mother 3 took out many things that made Earthbound a good game, like the humor and parodies of pop culture, as well as the story in Mother 3 didn't really make a lot of sense to me, Earthbound has a unique storyline. Another thing is Earthbound has Giygas, who was a great villain, Porky was just a fat, lazy, snobby brat, I hated him as a villain. The battles in Earthbound were also just really fun, Mother 3 felt tedious after a while.

The story of Mother 3 is really not even slightly hard to understand as long as you can read.
EarthBound copies its story from the first Mother game and is really, really bland. 4 kids team up to defeat an alien invader. No twists, no turns, no complexity.
Giygas has no personality whatsoever. Porky does. You said you hated Porky, and that's the point, You're supposed to dislike the person you're fighting.
The part about battles makes aboslutely no sense. Mother 3 has rhythm battles, and new songs appear later in the game. There's more control and variance in Mother 3, so it's not more tedious.

      Yo Bala, I agree.
Porky really hits hard as a villain,
ESPECIALLY if you play the games in order and start Mother 3 after Earthbound. Just seeing him as a chubby kid with HORRIBLE parents and a brother that dislikes him and who KNOWS what else, because like as far as we know Ness was "technically" his only friend. During all of his escapades I thought he was a dick, but also that how he is sort of isnt his fault??? You get what im trying to say?
And then in Mother 3 just seeing everything he's done, how he has gone WAY off the deep end,
the things he says, how he talks, the horrible things he's done to the new world. and him being aware that even if he were to stop, there would still be no end to put him out of his misery.
Such a good(bad) character, especially at endgame.

I have to agree that Mother 3 is way better than Earthbound. One important aspect that Mother 3 has a lot of that Earthbound has less of is it's emotional impacts. The death of the mother, the Mecha-Drago, the Magypsies, along with the sadness among characters, from the monkey to Claus in the final battle, those proceed far more emotional impacts than Earthbound.

  • @THEGREATMAX
    @THEGREATMAX 7 лет назад +6

I enjoy Earthbound for a couple of reasons. 1. More freedom to go where you want, when you want. Having a chapter system in Mother 3 made this difficult. 2. Because of the chapters, you don't feel like you really connect with some of the characters... I mean, I love Salsa, but I never felt like I really understood him more than his short part of the story... and bc his part is so short, leveling him up is basically pointless. 3. Same can be said of any other chapter-only character. You level up Flint? There's no point.
    4. Smaller world so things didn't feel as big or epic. 5. The world, and characters of Mother 3 are less relateable than in Earthbound, because of how different the world is. 6. The whole game is more like a mystery about what happened to the world/what is going on right now. Once you solve the mystery, the game is less fun to play through.

U can tackle the last 3 needles B4 the final one in mother 3 in any order. Plus u can go back to areas sometimes to fight secret bosses but I agree it's not as open as earthbound. However getting around is earthbound is also really annoying until u get the warp cus u can only walk. There's a bike but only ness can ride it and I can't use it in most areas. Enemies will still attack you unless you're in a sanctuary and u just beat the boss. Plus I guess I may not know but I don't usually see much reason to go back to past areas in earthbound, unless u need too for the plot.

Being serious though EarthBound has better aesthetics. Lucas in Tazmily felt like nowhere (hah) town suburbs where Ness was in a concrete place. Mother 3's geography was a chore. Snowy mountains here, fire volcano there, flying city hovering in the air BUT IN THE UNDERGROUND OF THAT FLYING CITY was the last needle in this creepy af cave. Not to mention the prologue chapters are annoying. And duster and bony are dull in character (one is literally a dog.) I feel people just relate more with EarthBound. I like both equally but I concede that mother 3 has stronger feels.

kokostale he doesn't have a good point. He exaggerates the no offense defense down yet they are in the game. Not only the fact that mother 3 has alot more grinding than earthbound. Not only that the inventory problem sucks in all three games. The fact that apple kid and dr andonuts weren't memerable makes no sense as the doc was in mother three. Don't even get me started on the whole rolling hp thing. It is a fair trade as mother 2 has life up b dealing 300 hp to party members and only costing 8pp. I will not deny the lackluster story, but it was basically a Pokemon game in a sense which means less charactee development. Mother 3 is better but mother 3 capitalizes on the flaws in the first game and second, fixes them, and then takes the good things and yay. Also the fact that he struggles with earthbound bosses is funny. But either way I like ur profile from dangorompa.

Jayden Battee you don't need to grind in Mother 3 at all. Just like in Chrono Trigger, the progression of the game is such that you will always be at the appropiate level to have a challenge, but never unfairly so. Earthbound has the grinding issue but only in the first minutes. After you beat Frank you will always be at the proper level, unless you constantly avoid battles (that applies for all 3 games actually).

Mother 3 is a lot more polished, and built and expanded upon EB in just about every way. But EB was the foundation that Mother 3 built upon, so which game should take more of the credit?
IMO I think Mother 3 is a better game in general (it was more fun for me, a lot less grinding), but EB was a lot more innovative.

    • @Darticus42
      @Darticus42 8 лет назад +4

***** TL;DR If you play through EB & Mother 3 without grinding for levels, they aren't easy. Trying to rush through the game actually makes it challenging (and more fun IMO).
Not if you don't grind for levels. I didn't grind for either (excluding EB only endgame for Sword of Kings) and both were quite challenging.
In the beginning of Earthbound, the skate punks hit very hard and Frank hits harder, and that's basically first on the agenda. Sure you can farm runaway dogs and spiteful crows and make Frank a pushover. But it takes a while and it's boring. And fighting through the Foursome Dept Store is just hard, especially without knowing beforehand to stock up on items. That being said, compared to most games grinding doesn't take long at all (and it was the first JRPG I've played), but without grinding it's still not easy,
And I didn't grind *at all* for Mother 3. From what I've heard most people ended up level 60-65 by the end and had PK Ground (which makes the boss gauntlet at the end *a lot* easier), but Kuma was at 42 by the end of my playthrough. To get an idea of how hard it was, after many tries I beat Miracle Fassad with just Lucas left, no healing items or PP, and 6HP and dropping. And that was after attacking quickly while my health was dropping and waiting when it was rising.
And don't even get me started on Mother 1. If you think that games's easy you're masochistic. Enemies that can 1HKO you midgame and Ana's the only one able to revive unconscious? Give me a break... I grinded on Mt Itoi for ~6hrs straight to get Ninten's SuperHealing, and I still struggled because PK Flash is broken af and can wipe both of them out in 1 turn. And if you think that game's *really* easy you're playing the wrong emulator version where you get so much XP that you can just kill anything in 1 hit by just playing the game.

Mother 1 was created as a parody of Dragon Quest. Earthbound just continued that joke/parody. That's why the menus look the way they do, and why everything is so minimalistic. Mother 3 I guess he threw out the Dragon Quest parody idea and just wanted to tell his own story.

Earthbounds difficulty at the start is an allegory for hard work. You work hard early on so you'll have an easier time later on due to higher levels due to lots of experience and a lot of disposable income from beating enemies. Look you're not going to be able to beat teenagers rowdy adults and police officers as a child without some serious training and the game makes that quite realistic in a fantasy RPG setting.

In the Earthbound community, I'd say it's likely that your opinion is probably now a common one. I'm not sure how this came to be but I've noticed the community is filled with a lot of younger people that played Mother 3 before Earthbound and also people that never played Earthbound at all. I've noticed that those who played Mother 3 first tend to hold it in higher regard, and same for the ones that played Earthbound first as well. Personally, I have a lot more love for Earthbound, but I also played it during my formidable years in the 90's.
I agree that Earthbound by today's standards was not an easy game, and to address some of the points in the video (enemies being too hard, mushroom status screwing up your movement, etc), all I have to say is this: indeed the game beats you down at times, but it was all by design. You have grind sometimes, you'll get lost sometimes, and die over and over, they break you down but only to build you up again and it only makes the end so much sweeter.
I also think a mistake people make is viewing a 1995 game through a modern lens - games in the 80's/90's were a lot more brutal and didn't hold your hand as much. It was a different era, today games are easier in order to appeal to a wider audience (especially in the west) which ensures more sales but many older games would argue it waters down the gameplay.

I like the way Mother 3 expanded upon what made Earthbound fun. It still has quirky characters and weird enemies. But Mother 3 has something Earthbound doesn't. Character growth. Characters actually have reactions to everything and there is way more of a plot. Which makes the game better in my opinion. I still can have fun with Earthbound's battle system and the quirky moments and characters still make me laugh, but Mother 3 does what a sequel should do: improve on what made the game fun and fix the flaws, like the beginning sections and the fact that there isn't any character growth in Earthbound.

You just shit on what Earthbound works for in a way. You aren't supposed to play it on drugs. You're supposed to play it through the mind of a child. Earthbound feels like it was written and directed by someone with the talent of a wise adult and the mindset and life energy of a small child. A lot of things feel "trippy" and "drug like" in a cheap and chintsy way. Calling Earthbound that is missing the point. Earthbound is my favorite video game in no small part to that. Being wacky is one thing, but having such genuine whimsy is what makes Earthbound feel so natural and heartfelt. It's literally the kickstart of the whole argument: Earthbound is so, so, so, so genuine.

I'm not allowed Emulators and Mother 3 is not localised yet.
So I'm not able to agree with you I'm afraid.
      *YET*
So If Mother 3 comes into the world and I remember this I'll re-evaluate this video.
*Again my apologies, I watched this at 10 PM and was really tired, so forgive me for all that stuff*

@Kaspu011 Apparently I did, my point would probably still stand, but I admit that this year old comment was quite flawed in it's reasoning

@Mark BlackWhite Its not that hard to believe. Just play through the underground in Winters with all the Starman for a while and you could be a lvl 94 just like i was
