My daughter made a new friend at school recently. Her new friend's nickname is Ninten. When she told me about it, I said "oh, that's the name of the first Earthbound's hero!"
My kiddo said "yeah, I know. Ninten is CRAZY about everything Earthbound! She told me that she discovered it because of Smash and she went looking online for them because she couldn't buy them. That's how she learned about emulators and stuff like that."

It's a difficult case with Mother 3, it seems like the game's OST would likely cause a myriad of lawsuits from various musicians and record labels against Nintendo over here in the US. Earthbound may have done the same thing with its OST but they got incredibly lucky because of various factors.

As a kid, I was always so bummed that I couldn't play Mother 3 officially, but that's because I didn't have a computer I could use to play the fan translation. When I got a phone, I tried to play it on there, but it never felt right. Then, one day, I got a tablet with Smartview and I played the game with a pair of Joy-con connected to my tablet connected to a smart TV. It took nearly six years, but I finally managed to find a way to enjoy the game in full on the TV like I played the other games. And thus it became one of my favorite games of all time.

Honestly, I’m just happy the game is on the switch. It’s impressive that Mother 3 has a great fan translation in the first place as (not as an insult to other fan translations) others aren’t on the same level as Mother 3’s. I’m hopeful Mother 3 will have a western official localization in the future (by sheer hope, by the looks of it, seems like all of the chances are void). What's interesting but also disappointing is at one point it seems Nintendo was going to attempt to release an officially localized mother 3 I think way back around the Wii days... but couldn't because of one small issue. You see at the time for no apparent reason at all, almost the complete soundtrack for mother 3 was released on music streaming platforms (along with a short official arrangements album if I remember correctly) only for both to disappear about a year later. Why were they taken down? Well it turns out that the soundtrack has WAY too many musical homages to many well known songs, and most copyright systems are very unkind to such tributes. In Japan they can get away with this no problem because Japan's court system is... weird, to say the least, which is also why the albums remain on the streaming platforms in Japan only. It's possible Nintendo may have been testing to see if they could get away with putting out the music without any issues, but they got hit with strikes. Basically what this means is Nintendo either has to get permission to use all the tribute melodies or have new compositions made to replace them, which they are never going to do unless they think it is absolutely without a doubt worth the headache.

    • @spazerdazer8421
      @spazerdazer8421 6 месяцев назад +7

Yeah that would be confusing if that is what they did.
In actuality though, Mother 1 had already been fully translated all the way back during the NES days, but because of factors such as the upcoming release of the SNES NoA ultimately never ended up releasing the game.
So tl;dr: Earthbound Beginnings as an English Translation has just been sitting in a vault at Nintendo for years, and then they for some reason suddenly decided to release it on the eshop.
It did feel like an easy first step to gauge interest in the series that could lead into a M3 Translation, especially with the attention given to it during E3 around that time, but ultimately nothing came to pass.

I feel sad that Nintendo has essentially confirmed that they will never translate the game to English
I’m sad because an English translation, despite being worse than the current fan translation, would make it more accessible to western audiences
At the moment if someone is interested in playing the game that Lucas originated from then they either have to
    1. Make a Japanese account and learn to read Japanese
    2. Have a computer, be informed that there is a fan translation and find the fan translation download
But an official translation would not only simplify the process to “buy Nintendo Online, download and open Gameboy emulator” but the advertising would allow people to discover Mother 3 or even spot Mother 3 on the Gameboy emulator as they are about to play a different emulator game like Minish Cap
So in short, I’m sad for no official translation because an official translation would allow more people to discover and play mother 3, and some of those people might even become fans

@@BigAlvideos101 well confirming such a thing is just bad PR, “hey, we are officially announcing that there will never be a localisation of Mother 3”. Such an announcement would probably also have people pestering Shigesato Itoi to “change Nintendo’s mind” which I am sure those at Nintendo do not want to happen.
In short the Switch era was Mother 3’s best opportunity to get a translation, we had gotten an English translation for a fire emblem game that had never gotten a translation before, Nintendo Online is the easiest way to shadow drop old games, there is no more region locks so people are able to play the Japanese version of Mother 3, and there is a fan translation that the team behind the translation gave Nintendo permission to use their translation (and I assume has taken every legal opportunity to let Nintendo know that they can have the translation) so no resources needs to be spent on Nintendo’s side. But despite everything going in Mother 3’s favour Nintendo still decide not to localise the game so I extremely doubt they would localise the game when the conditions aren’t as favourable as they are/were with the switch

Not true. Many can be aware of it but just may not have the means or ability to get the translation playable.
Or they could just have moral/security issues with downloading stuff like this and just want
an official release so they can buy and play it like anything else without the extra hassle.

To be honest, I rather not have a localization of Mother 3 as there is already a fan translation available and plus, I don't trust the NoA localization team trying to push their nonsense politics into a perfectly good game.

one thing that I think holds nintendo back from bringing Mother 3 over to the west is the Magypsies, We Mother/Earthbound fans have no problem with them for the most part but I honest to god could see a huge uproar in the LGBTBBQ community about their portrayal

That is misinformation. Reggie said that the content wasn't an issue, it didn't make sense from a business perspective. Makes sense, a lot of copyright infringement could be targeted and Nintendo doesn't want to waste their time on something if the reward isn't worth it. The magypsies were never a problem

Replace Magypsies with Music and it'll be legitimately more understandable. There's too much copyright infringement for Nintendo to deal with.

Nothing risked, nothing gained. If people get offended over the Magypsies, then that's their problem.

This is backwards. There’s nothing wrong with their portrayal. With recent politics, LGBTQ issues, specifically trans issues, Americans have been especially violent over their opinions on gender. The problem is not fellow LGBTQ people, it’s transphobes who would be upset over the existence of canonically non binary characters in, in what their uneducated minds, is a “kids game”.

This is backwards. Why would fellow LGBTQ people have a problem with canonically non binary characters? The issue is with Americans, and it’s similar to why they cut so much from the other mother games in their localizations. Americans get offended over little things like smoking and blood. With politics the way they are in the US, anti LGBTQ and especially anti trans sentiment is very high. These are the people who would be mad at a group of canonically non binary characters.
Any real mother fan would recognize the characters for who and what they are, lol.
