I still can’t even believe they did the “Reggie give us Mother 3” thing. I remember watching that live.
What Reggie should've said was "how about *you* go get a job you fat, sweaty nerd!"
And thrown a smelly Yoshi egg at him haha.

@@iammaxhailme it actually happened during Nintendo’s 2014 E3 video. I swear Reggie himself wanted to troll us.
Technically Nintendo didn't write it - Robot Chicken did. Nintendo just said fuck it and streamed it
mother 1 took around 25 years to be officially localized
so see u in 2030 everyone
I think the biggest factor working against it is the fact it's on the GBA. Mother 1 was already designed to be played on a television. By the time they uprez the entire game to make it look presentable they'll probably have sunk more money into it than they'll make. The only reason Nintendo ignores these franchises for years or even decades at a time is because they never made a lot of money to begin with.
@@mariokarter13 also the fact that some of the subjects push it from being published. the very outdated and terrible representation of trans with the mygipsies is one that would make nintendo look bad, while other things like death being such a heavy theme push it even further. and because of this, i wonder if it even did get localized, would it be the same story, or would they change it too much?
@@ryelo5448
Yeah, I get the intention Itoi had with the Magypsies, but that was back in 2006 and society has changed a lot since then. I didn't find them offensive, but I understand why some people would find them offensive (especially in sites like Twitter...)
Regarding other themes like death and the TaneTane drug trip... well, just give it a T rating. Earthbound Beginnings got a T Rating when it was released on the Wii U (and that is most likely because of a reference to underage drinking)
@@mariokarter13 maybe back then but earthbound zero and earthbound sold amazingly on the wii-u

Mother 3's fandom in a way surpasses Half-Life 3's, because fans already get to play it and yet still demanding for an official release because they genuinely want the public to experience this special little thing.
My favorite thing about Mother 3 that wasn't mentioned in the video: the rhythm-based battle system is used for musical jokes. A couple hours into the game, once the player has figured out how to chain attacks by following the beat, battle themes start speeding up or slowing down, switching time signatures, or abruptly cutting to dumb little musical interludes, disrupting your hits until you learn the songs and start planning around them. It's amazing and made me laugh out loud several times.
So true!!
As a musician this sound amazing!
Mother 3 is one of those experiences I dont think I'll ever be able to forget. I wish more people would give it a shot.
Gotta install the rom and a Gran Buenos Aires (GBA) emulator right now
the final part is one of the best and really sad that actually made me cry, that final battle hurts

Ive been curious about citizens of earth for while now...
I'm gonna say it. I really think there's no reason to want an official localization at this point. The fan translation is frankly better than anything Nintendo of America could give us, and it can be played easily by anyone with even a phone. Even if you want to play it on official hardware, patched cartridges exist. As someone with massive love in my heart for this game, I don't give a damn if Nintendo ever touches it.
This ^
Very few get this.
It is nice to be able to play the translation on the system the game was originally intended for, but I'd love for it to get a translation just to see how happy everyone would be and to introduce such a masterpiece to a wider audience. If ever there was a console to do that it would be the Switch
I have a deep fear they would censor things for the west if the ever officially translated it
Here's the thing though, the game should be accessible to everyone. Getting a fan translated rom might be easy for you or me but for the average person it might be daunting and an official release would be the first time they get to experience this game
@@NCozy You seem to think the average person is a drooling moron. You can google "Mother 3 translated rom" and quickly find a pre-patched one. And then downloading and setting up a GBA emulator is incredibly simple and user-friendly. The game IS accessible to everyone.
As someone who doesn't even like EarthBound or RPGs that much, I used to think the desperation for Mother 3 to get localized was overexaggerated. When I tried the English patched ROM on my 3DS, however, I was blown away - It's easily the best traditional RPG I've ever played.
The line, "Either way, the game would certainly generate discussions in today's climate, and they aren't discussions Nintendo likely wants to have," had me crying because literally the whole point of the game is to generate discussions...
Thank you. I was rather confused when in this video the irreconcilable nature of the game's core themes with Western Neoliberalism was not mentioned even as part of the picture... which it undeniably must have been from Nintendo's perspective, especially considering when the game was originally released: right in the heart of the Cheney administration.

The Itoi interview was so sweet.. he said he has Magypsie friends of his own, and respects them highly. That is how they come across in the game.
Yeah its a shame that people just see their looks and personalities as stereotypes just because so many before had used those negatively.
**weeping manly tears**
@@TempestDacine Yeah, sometimes people should take a step back and think about why they're upset about the things they're upset about.
The problem is not portraying, for example, drag queens as flamboyant. The problem is using it as a form of ridicule. Which, in this case, does not apply.
They're great and some of my favorite characters in the game, but I definitely feel they're the reason we won't see an official release in the West. If the initial reluctance was due to poor sales predictions, I believe that issue is gone. Mother has a pretty decent sized following nowadays. Nintendo wouldn't even have to translate it at this point!
not the piano at the end actually moving me to tears :sobbing:
this was such a good video, thank you for this
I love how you always tie your videos back to the central thesis statement of the channel, how necessary emulation is.
@3:38
One can mod a GBA to remove most of the Hissing and board artifacts for the audio output. Even though it is competing for CPU power, the CPU itself isn't the primary source for most noise.
You'll have to clean the audio potentiometer out, polish the power switch, and add capacitors/recap the board where the stock capacitance is at its limit.
You can find guides on how to do this through google, I bulk ordered a bunch of capacitors off of digikey and have cleaned up 6 boards myself. People sell kits to fix this, but they are overpriced. Just find the right size capacitors from any electronic supplier and test the board after each swap/addition.
I actually use the sound player in Mother 3 to test the GBA's that i've done this mod on, which is why I feel I should leave this comment. The game deserves to be heard with the noise removed while playing on the original system.
thank you for the subtitles, I am from India and it really helps me focus more on the quality content you make. Now go make new textures for Tinkle in MM you beautiful bastard.
Mother 3 is a prime example of why emulation shouldn't always be a bad thing
Bless Clyde "Mato" Mandelin for the phenomenal fan translation patch of Mother 3 that's existed for over a decade
I literally just finished this game last week for the first time. Masterpiece
Mother 3 is the actual gem in the series. The characters and plot completely outclass the admittedly humorous, yet shallow Earthbound. Both games have excellent soundtracks, battle systems, and climactic finales, so they're both worth playing, but Earthbound merely amuses you. Mother 3 makes you feel.
Me, hearing the love theme in the background: NOOOOOOOOOOOO
0:54 - 1:02 Oh, this is a really good description of what they did to Wario
I like that you say "Transphobic and trans positive" about the Magypsies, because they're actually both. They're not wholly good or bad representation. They come off as well intentioned, but stereotyped.
They're an attempt at positive representation for trans, non-binary, and other gender non-conforming people. However they're written from the perspective of someone who grew up in a time before trans acceptance, when transgender people were more often the butt of jokes.
You can see a similar effect with Eiichiro Oda's famous manga "One Piece", where there's an honest attempt to give people outside the gender norm a form of positive representation, but the creator stumbles on the first go.
Honestly my solution would be to rename them to "Sages" to avoid the name being too similar to a slur used for Romani people, and to change other character's lines slightly to have them be less surprised about the Magypsies being genderless, and more about them being basically mythical or something along those lines, like seeing a unicorn.
Thank You! I've been trying to find someone talking about this in the comments and you're explanation of it is wonderful! And yeah it is sort of bad representation but also kind of good. But also I'm happy to see any representation at all. Since sadly there is no representation for Brown or Black or Indigenous people or gay or trans and gender diverse people. I'm glad that more media to showing trans and gay people as normal.
Since we definitely need more stuff like that after what has happened :(
The Italian fan translation found an interesting solution: MagPsi
If you read it as an acronym, it's "Maghi PSI" (PSI Mages) and if you don't, it sounds like Magypsy
I completely agree about the comparison to one piece, it is one of my favorite anime and there is food representation but there are episodes that I just cannot bring myself to watch (sanjis timeskip one comes to mind)
I don't see why the characters can't be surprised about them being genderlezs however
@@-aexc-one piece def had great food representation. for a japanese manga series it featured a lot of hamburgers, which was very progressive towards the american readers. a top favorite if you ask me!!
"Romani" is a modern term. They are not Romanians and have nothing to do with Romanians.
Just started Mother 2 with a language hack and will soon start playing the other games as well. It definetly is an amazing series
Mother 3 is my favorite game.
One day I want to make a 100 hour long insanely long kojima dense diatribe about every single detail in the game.
There is nothing I could possibly say to describe how much I love this game.
I think I'll watch basically any video on it.
I've played the game quite a few times but I love it so much I make each playthrough mean something.
There are only a few games that resonate with me in every aspect as much as that game.
It has influenced the way I view video games, art, even myself.
That being said, I have made peace with Mother 3 not getting an official release.
I can play it on a multitude of systems with a processor. The fan translation is basically perfect. Nintendo would cut out some stuff. Just like the video said.
Seeing the community of fans of the series make fan games and games inspired by it have left my Mother 3 shaped hole filled somewhat.
Playing Mother 3 with Joycon Drift doesn't sound like an amazing thing anyway, I guess.
All of my hopes for it having an official release have been washed away year by year.
I don't need it anymore.
I've moved on.
In all honesty, Nintendo is only hurting themselves by not releasing it themselves officially.
They're missing out on all of the Mother money.
Itoi said he's not making a Mother 4 or anything so they don't need to do the "sell to gauge interest" bullshit, anyway.
The only reason I would say they should sell it officially that benefits me (that sounds selfish I know) is that it would help making my friends play my favorite game a bit easier.
I would love to share that experience more, yes.
But when that console dies...what then?
I guess we just go back to the emulators until the next release of it?
Games can't be permanent obviously.
Mother 3 is my favorite game but I am more realistic now.
It won't give me everything I wanted like I thought it would when I was younger.
It will just be another way for me to play my favorite game.
Just like lets say the Netflix release of Evangelion.
PS: I don't mind the GBA's Noise in this particular game. It adds something to me. Those clean midi versions feel like they're missing something. But I am a Noise Rock fan so take that as you will.
the only reason i want them to release it officially is because it would reach a broader audience. i think we all want it released officially because we want the game to get the recognition it truly and obviously deserves, and in the state it's in, it feels like nintendo kicked the game to the curb and let it rot.
Maybe I'm naive, but I feel like the controversy to the extent it exists has been had (particularly if they essentially just released the fan translation). Most people who care about the Mother series know what's in the game, and the rest probably wouldn't be made aware if they haven't yet been.
I could see a controversy arising if they watered it down or made a somehow more controversial choice in localization than what fans have done, but I think the latter is unlikely and the former is a very different, much more manageable, controversy.
If anything, do what some media companies have done and put a message saying something along the lines of "This game is presented in a form that is designed to preserve the original artistic vision and may contain content unsuitable and offensive for some players." I understand that potentially pushes away some new players, but at least then we'd have it.
This game is an actual paradox, at least from Nintendo's perspective. Releasing the fan translation word for word, as mentioned in the video, could prove problematic, but any major (possibly even minor) changes to the translation that could hinder said problems would likley cause outrage online from the fandom. The easy solution is to just not release it, but what would that say about Nintendo? I honestly think that their safest bet would be to retranslate it themselves, but damn. Lord knows we all think the direct translation would be preferable. All in all, I really liked this video, and await Nintendo's action on their enigma, if they choose to take action at all
Just fyi, no translation is "word for word" or direct. The fan translation team had to make a lot of decisions, even if they wanted it to be as loyal as they could.
@@fernandobanda5734 Yeah, even though they tried to be as faithful as they could to the original script, it wasn't a "literal" translation. Even then, they had to make several changes since there's a lot of untranslatable japanese wordplay in this game, and also to keep consistency with the localized version of Mother 2, EarthBound.
@@inendlesspain4724 Agreed, the best translation is not a literal translation, but a faithful recreation of the original message presented in a local format and language-context.
I think the best part of the WAP joke is when you replace everything with "Worship and Prayer."
