My only fear is Sakamoto being involved. They need a shock collar like for a disobient animal, and just put it on his wrist. Whenever he tries to write characterization for Samus or dialogue it just shocks his hand until he drops the pen.
@@CrashB111 Sakamoto can be talented in 2d and even 2.5 just not full 3d. The sad thing is he shouldn't be, alot of Japanese developers struggle with full 3d. Just look at Castlevania, no matter how hard Konami try they can't make Castlevania interesting in 3d, and if the only reason why franchises are in 3d because it's popular then that's not a good sign.
One of the few Nintendo series I've bought all of. metroid primes 1-3 and Pikmin 1-3 I actually bought. Can't say that for any Mario, smash, karts, Zelda, or Kirby game since GameCube. I could have pirated the Pikmin and Metroid games on the Wii and wii u, but I bought them new because they do need that support to get sequels developed.
I'd go so far as to say "If you downloaded and played AM2R you need to buy Samus Returns". The games may be different enough for someone to say one is better than the other, but Nintendo needs to hear Samus Returns checks all the boxes we want in a Metroid game. Also, don't violate trademark and copyright laws so frivolously. Either fight to change copyright law, or suck it up and accept Nintendo has all the control over Metroid- and then play exploration games that don't violate either law like Axiom Verge.
It'd give me a reason to use my switch. The overambitious console that was supposed to realize what the Wii U was supposed to be... has become a Wii U for me. A dust collector.
In defense of Fusion as well, for a game that had next-to the SAME narrative as Other M and did it FAR, FAR better, on a fucking GBA, with NO stylised, animated cutscenes, AND it was 8 years older, it was amazing.
14:37 Metroid Fusion also used it as a bit of a subtle character development device. You were on someone else's script because of the x parasite, but once you start powering up you go off script, to the point that you go and unlock a security level without authorization and basically you have your agency taken away early on, but slowly you begin to take it back. It was a way of making you feel disempowered, just like Samus and then feeling goddamn invincible once you stole your powers back from the parasites.
through most of Fusion, Samus is weak and being manipulated by the Federation, and just as you said, throughout the game she regains her agency. Other M also takes away Samus's agency but doesn't actually let you take it back ever, and doesn't do anything with it narratively or gameplay-wise.
@@Pichu441 And Samus herself doesn't actually resolve any of the plot in the game, all the other characters do that. The only thing she actually does, is kill the Queen Metroid. Every other boss or subplot is resolved by others.
The idea of being unauthorized to do anything blows my mind, imagine telling kratos he's "unauthorized" to use the blades of chaos or telling doom slayer he's "unauthorized" to use the super shotgun.
The idea is that Samus has horrendous Daddy issues and is desperate for his validation, so she's nerfed by psychological blocks. Of course, this was implemented in a way which is so patronising and unrealistic that it does such a disservice to abuse survivors and to Samus as a character to the point it's basically misogynist. And if that ain't Other M in a nutshell, idk what is.
Federation Force is a spinoff hated because the future of the franchise was uncertain. If we had FF with Samus Returns already announced, I'd say people would've been more understanding of the nature of the game.
Indeed. Many folks have championed the idea of a Metroid Spin Off where you play as perhaps a elite team of troopers (around 4 ALA Left 4 Dead) during the Phazon war during Prime 3 and pick up the slack while occasionally crossing paths with Samus who curbstomps whatever is in her way at the time, which may have been a full on boss for your team previously. Moments like that are in Fed Force, but as said, the franchise was in limbo and possibly due to be killed and the chibi aesthetics and soccer game didn't help these matters. Throw in a storyline that makes no sense (how did they capture samus if samus is one shotting everything?) and it really was not in the right place or right time.
When I think of a game centered around Federation Troopers, I think about that unlucky team at the beginning of Metroid Prime 2. Maybe a Metroid themed Republic Commando. Federation Force was not what I was expecting for sure.
@@4Wilko That concept sounds very cool for a game. But I think that from the reveal of FF it was pretty clear that was not what the game was goong to be.
The metroid prime version of Samus is such a badass. She never falters and she's so relentless that even the species she hunts has mythologized her. Excellent traits for a video game character, just look how popular Doom slayer is.
"In general, the game lets the player find their own way and get lost." And that is exactly what we all want in a Metroid game. The ability to get lost and have no clue where the heck to go next
Kasper Jenson That used to piss me off so much as a kid. so much to the point I refused to play any game that had a maze like design. Now it's almost the complete reverse where now i want level design closer to a maze like structure.
Metroid prime remedy this by occasionally telling you where to go next with a hint system that would kick in if you steered too far off from the next upgrade you needed to proceed.
@@derekakaderek No. It's not like I'm better because I have a different playstyle. I just don't like being told where to go, and I actually like the feeling of being lost. How is that flexing?
Proposition: A romhack/remake of Other M, where you have to balance obeying and disobeying Adam's commands. Like, disobeying Adam allows some degree of sequence breaking, introduces new lore/gear, and uncovers government secrets and conspiracies, but if you do it too much, or uncover the "wrong" secrets, Adam may start working against you, leading to him possibly setting off a self-destruct at any point in the game. Conversely, if you uncover secrets that he himself didn't know and is interested in, he will back off and give you more leeway, and may start actively assisting you. Depending on the story route you uncover, it can become extremely meta and break the Fourth Wall, to the point where one ending is Samus and Adam deciding to blow up the ship do they don't have to live and die for your amusement anymore. I call it: The Samus Parable.
This sounds interesting. I still think Other M's premise is fundamentally flawed as it makes Fusion and Samus's willingness to work with the Federation sound nonsensical. I would have gone with Space Pirate Research using corrupt GF scientists/workers/resources. The ...... *sigh* Deleter could have been compromised by the Space Pirates.
@@nousername191 If it was going to be a non-meta game, I probably would have got into something about how a Bounty Hunter's contract with the Galactic Federation required her to follow his orders in a rescue/recon mission, then explored why someone of Adam's rank was slumming it by heading a strike force (probably something to do with trying to figure out which one of the subordinates he brought with him is... urg... The Deleter...; maybe make Remember Me guy be a plant he put in to investigate the others from within) and whether he was worthy of her trust, with them rebuilding their rapport as the game goes on. Maybe make it so that baby Ridley somehow psionically messed with her gear so that using certain functions before she and Adam manage to decontaminate them will mess with her mind, Eternal Darkness style, and have the Varia Suit debacle be something like Adam telling her that the... Deleter... was probably tracking the readings from her Varia suit, so she deactivates it and goes to the last place they would expect someone to go without their fireproof suit so that she could work with Adam and "Remember Me" guy to corner him.
I'm playing through super metroid for my first time currently. I felt so insanely smart when I figured out you could use the grapple beam to kill that boss, and it was almost a pure mistake. I saw there were guns on the side, figured I'd deal with the smallest problem first, so I blew them up. Then I got picked up and thought it was weird how long it held on to me, so I assumed I should do something. I happened to be hovering just in front of one of the guns I'd blown up and the spark from it reminded me of the grapple beam, so I did a hail mary and grappled on to it. The way the boss reacted made me keep holding on even though I was losing health, and then it died. I felt like a complete badass. The designers deserve their weight in gold.
Well you figured it out before I did lol. I was 12 when this game came out in 1994 (yes I am old) I used to always just fight that boss all the way through. With weapons instead of the grapple beam. I am glad you are playing this game. It holds a special place for me being one of the best games I ever owned...if not THE best. I still play it through every once in a while just for the hell of it...and I love it every time.
If you thought that was crazy, you can actually deal the MOST damage by Speed Boosting on the floor and Shine Sparking AT her (Draygon, the boss who also happens to be a mother)
What an amazing analysis. I'm surprised RUclips recommened me this. Fed Force sold barely over 100k units while Samus Returns sold 400k. It's not much (to be fair, it came out at the time when 3DS games weren't selling the best) but it still shows that if you give the consumer what they want they'll buy it. How crazy is that?
Technically Nintendo already knew what fans wanted. Samus Returns started development in 2015 before Federation Force was announced. The Federation Force hate is unwarranted in hindsight.
@@chariotgoblin8060 Yeah good point. I was actually thinking if Samus Returns was announced around the same time Federation Force was, the hate wouldn't be that notorious. It was just a bad time for Metroid fans when Nintendo shut down the AM2R project and didn't even acknowledge Metroid's 30th anniversary.
Gulorful federation force being announced alongside Samus returns reminds me of fusion being released alongside prime. Also I was surprised by the amount of attention the game got.
@@randomduck8679 Federation Force was announced in 2015 and released in 2016 while SR was announced in 2017 and released that same year. I think it would be kind of hard to announce back then.
Metroid Prime was such a great game that if you sample me a piece of a song, I can tell from what map was it, thats what I call a memorable game soundtrack.
Excellent video. Especially enjoyed the deadpan humor ("the key that allows you to open this door also allows you to open a hole in an enemy's face"). Also refreshing to see someone critically analyze Other M while acknowledging it did a couple things right. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos.
I laughed at how he subtly adds the middle finger for the unreachable missile upgrade, then uses the same middle finger in ghost form as "the developer's unseen hand that guides you"
Ambience...thats one of Metroid's greatest points, and I'd dare say the strongest of all games. It's not the game with the greatest graphics, but even Super Metroid or Metroid Fusion manages to make this feel as if you were there,it uses sounds, colors and visual effects to achieve things that even games with high-end graphics cant do
I recently played Fusion, and the ambience of the game is on point. Zero Mission feels desolate as you explore ruins, Super Metroid is a bit claustrophobic but highly immersive with detailed environments that are memorable and engaging, and Fusion is downright creepy, with the limits of screen, the sound design, and the hinting at future bosses (X-Ridley, the Nightmare screaming around ARC for 2 or 3 visits before you deal with it, etc) making me jump at even normal enemies appearing from offscreen. The SA-X in particular brings dread like I rarely feel in games. It helps that Fusion is also hard as nails, though in part simply because everything hits like a truck.
Even the original Metroid has a bang'n soundtrack that really drowns you in the ambiance. What it lacks in visuals to put you in such an otherworldly place it makes up for in audio.
I strongly believe that Metroid Prime was the best looking game ever made when it was released. Visually it was stunning. The entire audiovisual experience was second to none. A work of art and the crown jewel of the franchise.
TET - COM I disagree for the most part snes game graphics are the usual sometimes advanced but I feel the most impressive visual wise is from earthboun if you've beaten the game you would know which part im talking about
@Danielle Anderson look at you hacker you pathetic creature of meat and bones how can you defeat a perfect immortal machine like me Man i miss memorable ai villans in games
@prologue no stop be an salty fan and beat an dead horse other M was good as it have is redeeming qualities and also do yours played other M? or you just keep whinne every time somebody open mouth in an cutscene?
@@novelezra Thank you for posting this because it made me realize I misunderstood the Direct and thought preorders for the Special Edition were still to be announced, but nope. People bought them all up immediately and I just put an embarrassing amount down on eBay.... but it coulda been even worse, so thanks again.
"Then Nintendo showed us that they had learned from the mistake releasing a story based Metroid that ignored the series principles.... by releasing a story based Metroid that ignored the series principles" 😂😂😂
funny thing was, I thought federation force could have been interesting. until i saw the gameplay. now the only thing i remember about federation force is "OVER HERE!"
I still think Federation Force was pretty good. Nerrel judging it in terms of it being "the next Metroid" seems confused at best, but I think that explains a lot of the reaction to the game. People wanted the next Metroid, and Federation Force was a mission-based co-op multiplayer spinoff. It's explicitly *not* the next Metroid. Nintendo didn't read the room. It's not a true Metroid game, but Mario Kart 7 isn't a true Mario game either. The difference is that if you wanted a true Mario game, they were still coming out left and right, whereas Metroid was kind of AWOL at this point. If you go into Federation Force without expecting it to be "the next Metroid," it's an entertaining mission-based co-op multiplayer Metroid spinoff. That it doesn't hit the hallmarks of what a real, mainline Metroid game should be is irrelevant, because it's not trying to be one of those. Other M was a failure because it was *supposed* to be a real Metroid game and failed in most of the meaningful ways. Federation Force was a failure because people *wanted* it to be a real Metroid game but it was just a spinoff.
It surprises me that a company that every time makes what most experts would consider "a risky move", ignores trends and ends up innovating, and setting the standard for future games doesn't seem to care much about the product that has a lot of fabric to cut from. Think back to when Halo and Metroid Prime were released. The first one is an action shooter that charmed everyone with its fast-paced gameplay and many other games tried to replicate the formula while Prime decided to take it easy and add mechanics that even today are used within modern games.
i have been playing super metroid since its release..i have finished it at least 200 times...i have never noticed the droppings under those hanging enemies..mind blown
I wish Nintendo would watch this video. So that they would understand (to a certain degree) what the Metroid franchise misses. I grew up playing the old Metroid games and my favourite was Metroid Prime (1). Mostly because of the athmosphere and exploration (and the scan feature). I wish they could come back to this sort of Metroid with the announced Metroid Prime 4. Thank you for this video. It sums up the things I missed in the last games.
Samus returns really was a great return for the series so I'm even more excited for prime 4. I just hope don't leave us with no info at all XD. It's been more than a year since it was announced.
@Let's Have A Discussion ad ho·mi·nem /ˌad ˈhämənəm/ adverb & adjective 1. (of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining. "vicious ad hominem attacks" "Something tells me you're an incel who posts on 4chan" "What? You are an incel with no girlfriend or higher education for sure." I mean on a technicality with this definition. . . Of course it's first definition might be wrong, but who knows. I got it off google.
@Let's Have A Discussion An ad hominem attack is an attack on a person and is completely irrelevant to the debate. "What? You are an incel with no girlfriend or higher education for sure" has nothing to do with the argument you are having about Metriod. Quite frankly, your remark makes you look stupid.
but it is made by the samus returns developers so i don't have high hopes for it. i expect it to be a 7 out of 10 at best. AM2R was better though returns was not bad. this is kinda like mario party. people hated the last ones so they are willing to put up with an ok game
This dude Biospark is actually trying to create a free exploration version of the game, so to say. It will allow sequence breaking and doing different boss orders. Look up "Metroid Fusion Freedom" for a bit more information.
funny enough, it was through my persistence my not wanting to get the grapple beam that I managed to get that missile tank at 3:10. with a perfect jump it's possible to grab it
Zelda was on a decline and then they took a look back at the original, made BoW, and sales boomed. They need to go look at the original Metroid and rebuild.
what? looking at the release order, it doesnt seem like zelda was in any trouble before BotW, it was just a long wait. on consoles (not ds) there was skyward sword and before that twilight princess. ss might have been just ok but its far better than other m or federation force id assume.
@@agoogleuser4859 most people don't like Skyward Sword and while it's not other m level of bad it was far too linear and did a lot of things that just kinda hurt the experience still a good game in my opinion but it could've been better I'd personally love if in ten years or so they remade Skyward Sword to fix all it's problems cause the story and art direction hold up and it's supposed to be the start of the Zelda timeline so Zelda definitely deserves a better game to fill that slot than what we got even if it's not terrible. all this being said aside breath of the wild wasn't perfect the story was the main problem along with the horrible balancing of weapons among some other things that could be added or expanded upon like cooking and a crafting/ repair system so you can fix your better weapons so it's not like we got a masterpiece after Skyward Sword anyways but definitely a step in the right direction
I would argue they took a compromise between what made the original Zelda the success, and adapted it in a new way to the current trend of open-world games.
Fusion is still one of my favourite Metroid games, just for tone and atmosphere alone. It was different, sure, but it kept the heart of the series still imo.
11:56 That's the part that made me quit the game after an hour of playing! I had to google to figure out all I had to do was watch a shitty cinematic to unlock a door.
A video talking about Nintendo's design choices and flaws, while also covering what is good in a metroid game in their opinion with a voice similar to Keanu Reeves? Not only did your Majora's Mask video make me like your content, but this one made me subscribe too! Keep at it Keanu, tell nintendo what they should do!
I've heard the reason for the appalling voice acting in Other M. In the game, Sakamoto had a lot of control over the voice acting of the localization process, so even though he couldn't speak much English, he wanted Samus to sound like she did in Japanese. In Japan, someone with a flat monotone voice is considered a badass and/or a mature adult who has control over their emotions. So, when he told Samus' voice actor to talk like she had a lobotomy, he thought he was making her sound cool.
You’re very on point man, I’ve played the Metroid games since I was a kid and I’m hoping Nintendo achieves the balance that raises the franchise to it’s true height with Metroid Prime 4. I hope this video explodes in popularity like the last one did by shilling or otherwise so that more people can latch onto your channel.
Aww hell yeah, you're actually making further reviews. I was thinking that MM3D video might have just been a one-off thing you made out of love for the original game.
I watched the video before I played Super Metroid and when I saw that part where you blow up the tube with the power bomb, I kept that in my head so that I’d remember when I got there. I kinda wish that I never saw that so I’d be able to figure out on my own and feel the amount of gratification that you said would occur.
I’ve been running through the Metroid games over the last year and a bit. I’ve absolutely loved these games. I started with Zero mission, I’ve had this one for years and I can practically speedrun it, then Samus Returns, for the first time I got to play Metroid 2, then Super for the first time, I’m a bit late to the party, but I loved it, I just beat Prime, I loved it and I just started Prime 2, I’m hooked. Edit: oh yeah, I also played and beat Other M, but I honestly forget that game exists half the time.
And the talking characters? Can we talk about the humans presence and dialogues? Metroid used to submerge us in a dark atmosphere, cut from civilization and humans, the feeling of being lost in a world we don't belong to... that was so special. And then we had a Netflix drama on Orher M
Awesome video. I fully agree on your points. Especially atmosphere, I'm a huge fan of great atmosphere in games and Super Metroid nails it perfectly... Imo THE best game in the franchise and one of the best games ever made. And now for a less populair opinion.. I love the Prime games ... All three. But instead of going with the obvious and saying Prime 1 is the best 3d Metroid, I'm going with Prime 2. Why? Atmosphere.. The settings, music and especially atmosphere in that game is off the charts. And I love it.
Atmosphere is the defining trait of all my favorite video games as well. I'm a virtual tourist. I'm primarily interested in games that take me to other intriguing places. Oddly, Metroid should be my all time favorite because of that, but for some reason I've just never been able to really get into the whole series. It's great and I've played a great deal of it, but it's just never clicked with me for some reason. Neither did Bioshock, which is just as strange.
there's nothing wrong with having a story, prime 2 and 3 had dialogue boxes, and 3 had a lil conversation stuff, and It wasn't detremental. It's just that the story in other M just actually takes away from the feeling of the character in the exact same way the gameplay does. If the gameplay was open in exploration, and the cutscenes were out of the way and not interfereing and didn't create busy work for the player, they would still come off as grating as they are still the reason behind you having to wait to unlock your powers and it builds this demeaning attitude towards your commander and even samus. Honestly It's not that metorid doesn't need a story to do well, it's that It has to know when to get out of the way, and not to drag on, and when not to make the player feel like an underling. Sure you don't NEED a good story for metroid, but having one isn't a death sentence, it's if you manage to make it work. Story should be minimal and similar to how prime games or fusion games. a good chunk of knowledge should be optional and implied but if you want character interactions you can do that, and they can be brief when they need to be. But they could bookend story beats between areas ONE time when you get to a new location, and not force the player to meander around for Adam. I think that because other M failed on *all* counts it turned people off from this stuff, much how nintendo didn't get the issue with gameplay and focused on removing story, but in the opposite way as well.
“It’s important that the developers fingerprints remain invisible, so that the achievement of figuring it out can feel like your own” - extremely well written and also, a very finely observed point that really does matter. It’s a big part of the magic that made Super Metroid so good
excellent video, but gosh that filter you use with fusion! who hurt you!! serious note, never knew quite how much of a mess other M really was, very enlightening video for someone who's largely skipped the metroid series
Watched this video at least 8 times now, can't stop tearing up at the beginning (playing Samus Aran's theme) and towards the end. It's such effective editing to have triumphant music play as you discuss the iconic features of the Metroid series.
Awesome video, the humor was well done! One aesthetic suggestion: Instead of doing that 2x Filter for whatever emulator your use for classic games (anything Dreamcast and earlier, basically) just use scanlines instead. These games were made with them in mind, they look so good with them.
Just watched this video and your Majora's Mask 3D comparison. I love how you compare these games not only in gameplay, but also atmosphere, music, and other factors that add to the experience. Subscribed, really hope you make more videos like this.
I would love to see your thoughts on Metroid Dreads trailer, and some hopes for the game! I really hope they can improve upon the already established mechanics introduced in Samus Returns, the sliding also seems super cool to maintain the fast pace.
I've watched this 4 times cause youtube just keeps recommending this to me I can't even complain because you're so right with this and i love the entire video.
Would Federation Force truly work as a proper Metroid experience though? It's so obviously a spin-off that you can't truly judge it by the predetermined mores of the Metroidvania genre.
It probably would have been fine if released at a different time when the series was in better shape. The main point is that a spinoff that didn't reflect what Metroid is about was the absolute worst thing Nintendo could have put out at that moment.
Technically Nintendo already knew what fans wanted. Samus Returns started development in 2015 before Federation Force was announced. The Federation Force hate is unwarranted in hindsight.
Chariot Goblin I’d say it’s slightly warranted since Nintendo must have been pretty out of touch with Metroid fans if they thought showing a game like that after not getting a new Metroid nearly six years after what was an otherwise disappointing entry in the series. People would’ve most likely been a lot more receptive to it if it was unveiled at E3 2017 along with Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid: Samus Returns instead.
To me Federation Force feels like it was never ment to be part of the metroid series, but was overhauled and re-skinned mid way through development to make it fit the series mould. They either didn't under stand how Metroid worked, had a rushed development cycle, didn't give a shit and half assed it, or any combination of the three. In the end it was an ok hand held shooter, But a horrible excuse for a Metroid game.
I cannot stand Samus' suit in _Other M_ mostly because it just seems like a lazy design to make it easier to do some pallet-swapping. My biggest complaint about the design (aside from scrapping the purple Gravity Suit for the Gravity _Feature's_ purple glow) is that Samus retains her giant-ass basketball shoulders even while having her standard yellow Power Suit; with the exception of _Metroid 1_ and/or _Zero Mission,_ Samus isn't supposed to have those basketball shoulders until she gets her Varia Suit! It's made even worse when there's an actual cutscene in _Other M_ that briefly acknowledges her original, flat-shouldered Power Suit design. Makes it even more annoying to see the big-shouldered yellow Power Suit in the Mother Brain opening cutscenes. Yeah, in _Super Metroid,_ you can technically toggle off just about every suit upgrade if you wanted to --but why would you? A lot of this stuff in _Other M_ only make me more P.O.'d about Samus having every upgrade from _Super_ but is deliberately holding her full potential back; it almost makes it seem like Samus has been canonically tossing out her upgrades after each adventure. I really hope some day _Other M_ is revisited in an official rewrite that would make for a better addition that fits between the events of _Super Metroid_ and _Metroid Fusion._ I'd like to thank all zero of the people who have read this for reading this comment that'll most definitely be obscured in the comment section
My problem with the other m suit is its too slim. Every other Varia suit was bulky and masculine. It was a nice duality with her Zero suit, a very feminine and slim outfit.
@Veteran Nintenerd, we do not need a rewrite of Other M. It just needs to be not considered canon. I don't consider it canon at all. I don't care what Sakamoto says. He is sort of going senile at this point. He should have been proud of Retro Studios for making a trilogy paying homage to the originals and keeping the series alive, but instead he says it's not canon and says his are better... I respect Sakamoto for helping pioneer the series and especially in creating all the original 4 2d metroid games including the remakes of 1 and 2 (despite the fact that I think AM2R is superior to the official remake), but he needs to get his head out of his own ass.
How Nintendo could've used Other M's narrative driven purpose and story and made it into possibly one of the BEST Metroid games in my opinion: 1. We know from Metroid Fusion that Adam must die in order for this game to make any chronological sense right? Well, if you are to keep Adam's role the same as Samus' navigator, that's fine... BUT, Nintendo could have used this as a massive plot and game design devise in itself by removing that ability part way through the game where perhaps Adam is either killed or kidnapped early on to allow the player freedom of movement entirely whilst also creating an uneasy atmosphere. Think about it, up to that point, you'd have your hand held, be given tips and tricks to look out for, but removing that ability after say the 2nd boss would add a very similar tension to Super Metroid upon landing on Zebes the first time; the player is now under complete control, and they must figure out what to do on their own - Navigation rooms have been hacked and perhaps can only give you suggestions on where to go with no actual map markers. Why is this a good idea?: To me, regardless of the improvements to gameplay this has? This also fits it's narrative role 10X BETTER than what we actually got. It fleshed Samus out as a character and achieves what Retro Studios did with her by allowing us to be molded with her. It also gives more purpose and perhaps more options to take the side story mystery that was oddly dropped mid game: a man who goes by the name - 'the deletor' (if I'm remembering correctly). Which brings me on to point number 2... 2. Using the Deletor as a secondary antagonist was not a problem in my opinion. It's something new Metroid hasn't delved into much. Yes, we've had characters impede our progress before in prior Metroid titles, but non as calculated, and meticulously as Other M's mysterious secondary villain. The character had two problems for me. First of all, the character got forgotten later on, and two, he didn't do anything massively impactful to be realised as a massive threat to SAMUS' MISSION. Yes, he sabotaged the team on numerous occasions and killed them, but Samus was still more than capable to handle him. Instead have him perhaps kidnap Adam and be the plot device needed to GROW Samus as a character into what we know and love. Why is this important? Metroid, as a franchise often features some of Nintendo's darkest themes which play on the atmosphere a lot. If you're trying to build atmosphere whilst still being a Metroid title, this is how it's done! Not by going into obligatory investigatory segments where you can't shoot... POINT 3! 3. A lot of the mechanics are gimmicky, unneccesaary and sometimes downright pointless or annoying. The core gameplay of this game is really fun imo, but both the first person transition and the over the shoulder no shooting sequences are ridiculous. The side scrolling segments and core 3d dmc styled gameplay were both perfect how they were, the other two were simply immersion and gameplay destroying in my opinion. Why is this important? Forget Metroid for a second, games are not and never will be fun when developers put thematically useless portions or mechanics in them. These segments are stale and serve no intelligent purpose and are almost always stand ins for actual content! Ohhhhh baby they're useless... Speaking of babies... 4. Samus' character was misinterpreted and butchered from the previous games particularly Fusion which it was heavily inspired by obviously (not super). The emphasis and relationship shown in Other M between her and the baby are PREFECT EXAMPLES of how the devs took a story element at base value without evaluating the purpose. Her relationship with Adam was also somewhat lacking of using the source material properly. You can try argue against this, but I swear blind, Metroid Fusion was their source material for her relationship with Adam and Baby Metroid as the game gives you plenty of exposition on both through the ADAM computer and the Metroids helping against the SA-X being meaningful to her. NO, Samus' voice actor was not the problem, her tone was believable to me tbh. Her script however was a massive problem as was her character's pathetic progression throughout the game. Why this is important?: If a game is story focused? You need a strong protagonist AND IF IT'S AN ESTABLISHED FRANCHISE AND YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE STORY OF THE FRANCHISE, YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE DAMN SOURCE MATERIAL! Other M is not a reboot which is why this is all essential to me. That's my 4 points I wanted to talk about. Lemme know if you think this'd make an interesting video and if happily convert this into a fully detailed video in the future ^^ Thanks for reading tho and lemme know what you think and perhaps what else you think is thematically wrong with this game! Great video by the way
Metroid is such a brilliant series, I remember playing Metroid Prime for the first time when I was around 10 and the games atmosphere and music would make me afraid and anxious. I really hope with Metroif Prime 4 they find a way to bring back the passion and creativity that was placed in alot of the older games.
I was watching the motion control video and this video started, and since I was so focused on petting my cat I thought this was was a segment in that video for 5 minutes until I realised I'm watching a video about a game I don't give a fuck about, and somehow it managed to still be very interesting
Fusion was the first Metroid i played (and i've replayed it several times on vba since), and though i loved the exploration, more than anything the atmosphere was what sold it, i still have shivers whenever i remember the fist time you "get to" hide from SA-X, the music disappears and you can only hear it's heavy footsteps knowing that if it sees you you're dead, and it's amazing that it gets you actually scared. Still my favorite videogame franchise to date.
The developers guiding players in Super Metroid is the best in any game I've ever played. The hidden e-tank in the room filled with the jumping leech guys is a perfect example. The developers expect you to jump and shoot in all directions, which uncovers a hidden energy tank in the ceiling. Brilliant.
I feel Metroid is one of the few series that doesn't need anything new, you could just hit shuffle on the layout of the caves and powerups in for example Super Metroid, and you'd get a whole new game
Nintendo is obsessed about inovation to the point that every game they release need something like it This is good and bad at the same time series like f zero dont need anything new but they still want to do it and its one of the reasons why we doesnt have a new one Or hey star fox thats a franchise that was ruined for the need of inovating and now the only games in the franchise that do well are reboots of the first game over and over again
Well, here we are. We got metroid dread, an absolute masterpiece in 2021, a gorgeous and much appreciated remaster of metroid prime, and we know that prime 4 is on the way, and will be out next year. I think things could finally be looking up for metroid!
Hey I bought the Samus returns the special edition! I could not support other M or federation, but returns? That's got the heart of the series, and that's more of what I want
This aged pretty well, seeing Metroid Dread being a reality I have hopes this franchise is finally on it's right path
My only fear is Sakamoto being involved. They need a shock collar like for a disobient animal, and just put it on his wrist.
Whenever he tries to write characterization for Samus or dialogue it just shocks his hand until he drops the pen.
I love how well it's selling, it's been the highest-selling game of the last week or so
@@CrashB111 that's gone way too far let him be involved

I could have pirated the Pikmin and Metroid games on the Wii and wii u, but I bought them new because they do need that support to get sequels developed.
sounds like somebody is being a corporate shill here
@@Sheerspeechcraft lol no, he's saying to buy the games if they're good which is what you should be doing if you want the series to progress
I'd buy Prime Trilogy if they'd put it on switch already.
Guess I'm not the only one that wound up on this video searching about that.
I too am patiently waiting for this to happen, I have high hopes that Nintendo will drop the trilogy along with the new Metroid 4 :')

@@antebasic2418 Heey!! Is not bs 😤🤚. Sorry, I love it 😣.
And that's why I love metroid fusion
through most of Fusion, Samus is weak and being manipulated by the Federation, and just as you said, throughout the game she regains her agency.

@@4Wilko A lot of people also felt it'd be akin to Halo ODST where you're just some group of soldiers fighting as hard as possible to not die.

Yeah, that game was stupidly well designed for its time.
Well you figured it out before I did lol. I was 12 when this game came out in 1994 (yes I am old) I used to always just fight that boss all the way through. With weapons instead of the grapple beam. I still play it through every once in a while just for the hell of it...and I love it every time.

"OVER HERE!"
Federation Force was a failure because people *wanted* it to be a real Metroid game but it was just a spinoff.

what? looking at the release order, it doesnt seem like zelda was in any trouble before BotW, it was just a long wait. on consoles (not ds) there was skyward sword and before that twilight princess. ss might have been just ok but its far better than other m or federation force id assume.

I like his botw ss comparison it nails it on the head how I feel about that game

Lol
And the talking characters? Can we talk about the humans presence and dialogues?
Metroid used to submerge us in a dark atmosphere, cut from civilization and humans, the feeling of being lost in a world we don't belong to... that was so special.
And then we had a Netflix drama on Orher M
And suddenly Nintendo grabbed Metroid dread from the archives and told mercurysteam to make it.
"I was using the bathroom. Did I miss anything?"
“It’s important that the developers fingerprints remain invisible, so that the achievement of figuring it out can feel like your own” - extremely well written and also, a very finely observed point that really does matter. It’s a big part of the magic that made Super Metroid so good

''I was using the bathroom, did I miss anything?... SAMUS''
No matter how many times I rewatch this video, this part always cracks me up
16:50 The Federation Forces is staffed by the Dover Boys? That explains everything.
Confound those Dover boys! Ooh, how I hate them! I hate Tom! I hate Dick! And I hate Larry! They drive me to drink!
Cannot wait for the Metroid Dread video
Can't wait for the eventual Metroid Dread video!
excellent video, but gosh that filter you use with fusion! who hurt you!! serious note, never knew quite how much of a mess other M really was, very enlightening video for someone who's largely skipped the metroid series
Watched this video at least 8 times now, can't stop tearing up at the beginning (playing Samus Aran's theme) and towards the end. It's such effective editing to have triumphant music play as you discuss the iconic features of the Metroid series.
Really well done, I love your narration
9/10 Not enough Metroid Federation Force memes (Joking, it was a 10/10 video)
I love the brisk pace of these videos. You can make me crack up with a joke that only lasts 3 seconds. Keep it up!
Awesome video, the humor was well done! One aesthetic suggestion: Instead of doing that 2x Filter for whatever emulator your use for classic games (anything Dreamcast and earlier, basically) just use scanlines instead. These games were made with them in mind, they look so good with them.
Here's to hoping metroid dread is what we've been waiting for
“Nintendo entered years of radio silence”
*”BOING!”*
Great timing, Mario. And despite Federation Force’s bad rep, I enjoyed the game.
Just watched this video and your Majora's Mask 3D comparison. I love how you compare these games not only in gameplay, but also atmosphere, music, and other factors that add to the experience. Subscribed, really hope you make more videos like this.
Theyre headed in the right direction.
I would love to see your thoughts on Metroid Dreads trailer, and some hopes for the game! I really hope they can improve upon the already established mechanics introduced in Samus Returns, the sliding also seems super cool to maintain the fast pace.
i know this video is four years old but seeing fusion and super with pixel smoothing was pain
I've watched this 4 times cause youtube just keeps recommending this to me
I can't even complain because you're so right with this and i love the entire video.
@@Nerrel that's fair
I really hope some day _Other M_ is revisited in an official rewrite that would make for a better addition that fits between the events of _Super Metroid_ and _Metroid Fusion._
I'd like to thank all zero of the people who have read this for reading this comment that'll most definitely be obscured in the comment section
My problem with the other m suit is its too slim. Every other Varia suit was bulky and masculine. It was a nice duality with her Zero suit, a very feminine and slim outfit.
The worst part of the Other M suit is the huge uniboob breast plate.
The last thing Other M needs is a rewrite. The only thing Other M needs is a pyre.
@@raptortobi The non canon prime games thing was a mis-translation.
How Nintendo could've used Other M's narrative driven purpose and story and made it into possibly one of the BEST Metroid games in my opinion:
Why is this a good idea?:
To me, regardless of the improvements to gameplay this has?
Why this is important?:
If a game is story focused? You need a strong protagonist AND IF IT'S AN ESTABLISHED FRANCHISE AND YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE STORY OF THE FRANCHISE, YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE DAMN SOURCE MATERIAL! Other M is not a reboot which is why this is all essential to me.
That's my 4 points I wanted to talk about. Lemme know if you think this'd make an interesting video and if happily convert this into a fully detailed video in the future ^^
Thanks for reading tho and lemme know what you think and perhaps what else you think is thematically wrong with this game!
Great video by the way
DISCLAIMER: ORIGINAL COMMENT ABOVE IS LONG
Metroid is such a brilliant series, I remember playing Metroid Prime for the first time when I was around 10 and the games atmosphere and music would make me afraid and anxious. I really hope with Metroif Prime 4 they find a way to bring back the passion and creativity that was placed in alot of the older games.
Sales are looking really good for Metroid Dread rn, since it was on the E3 this time. This gives a glimmer of hope for the franchise.
As an avid Metroid fan, I wish to God Nintendo would watch this video. Your breakdown of the Metroid experience is on point.
I was watching the motion control video and this video started, and since I was so focused on petting my cat I thought this was was a segment in that video for 5 minutes until I realised I'm watching a video about a game I don't give a fuck about, and somehow it managed to still be very interesting
I never play Metroid but i have same filling for the classic Tomb Raider(s).
Brilliant.
You have a very well spoken way of gripping these concepts. I enjoyed this very much, thanks!
Great video! I'm hoping that MP4 will take heavily from BoTW exploration traits.
I wonder how Dread’s map will compare to Super / Zero’s vs Samus Returns / Fusion’s.
this is such a good video, every time i come back to it i find new stuff to appreciate
I like how Zora Link is still in the trash.
Hopefully more people discover you man because your content is grossly underrated.
I feel Metroid is one of the few series that doesn't need anything new, you could just hit shuffle on the layout of the caves and powerups in for example Super Metroid, and you'd get a whole new game
Super Metroid Randomizer is a thing. Shuffles all the powerups around in a ROM of Super Metroid. It's pretty fun.
Nintendo is obsessed about inovation to the point that every game they release need something like it
This is good and bad at the same time series like f zero dont need anything new but they still want to do it and its one of the reasons why we doesnt have a new one
Or hey star fox thats a franchise that was ruined for the need of inovating and now the only games in the franchise that do well are reboots of the first game over and over again
@@valletas You are right, but god damn it was hard to understand what you were saying...
17:12 is probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen on RUclips.
Great video. And as a side bonus, it reminded me (with a clip at the end) of Pierre Bernards Recliner of Rage...I'd forgotten all about that on Conan.
Same here. "Pierre Bernard's recliner of RAAAAAAAAAGE"
Well, here we are. We got metroid dread, an absolute masterpiece in 2021, a gorgeous and much appreciated remaster of metroid prime, and we know that prime 4 is on the way, and will be out next year. I think things could finally be looking up for metroid!
Dude, PLEASE keep making these videos, these are amazing!
Yes, i too agree
Well you got your wish with Metroid Dread
20:04 Answer: Metroid Dread
Hey I bought the Samus returns the special edition! I could not support other M or federation, but returns? That's got the heart of the series, and that's more of what I want
I've seen this video about five times and I *just* realised the line about Adam being in the bathroom actually wasn't in the game.
