Sequelitis - Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 окт 2011
- Mega Man was a game that was so simple and yet so ahead of its time. It defined an entire genre and continues to be considered one of the best titles in video gaming history. But, does its spin-off sequel, Mega Man X fair so well?
- Развлечения
To recap:
Megaman X is the best game ever because
1. The intro stage
2. Movement
3. Nggffffffffffff
Well I mean just from watching the video he listed:
1. Graphical improvement from NES Mega Man to the pixel art in Mega Man X
2. Very smart mechanical communication (in movement, attacking, enemies, platforming, optional collectibles, etc)
3. Intro Stage does a fantastic job in laying the structure for the entire game
4. Motivation (mainly mechanically, unless you *really* care about the narrative, all the power to you) very early on to progress and master the game
5. Great Level design in general
And so on. I’m pretty sure he meant to only share about conveying to the player what the game is, it’s mechanics, and why you should keep playing, all while not forcing it. Plus, this was partially satirical, not entirely informative; he made a funny video that also talks about his favorite game.

@STRONG BIG It's not that he lacks the confidence to continue this series or that he doesn't know it was important, he just doesn't want to make this type of content anymore. It doesn't interest him. And there's nothing wrong with that. If it doesn't fulfill him and if his artistic expression doesn't bring him to make these types of videos, then he shouldn't make them.
@@ladisgust I see what you mean. Like why would I want to watch a video he half assed just to appease the masses? If there's no passion put in a creation it's no longer a work of art. Its a cash grab and it doesn't really appease anybody

We just want to hear you talk about sequels again.
When's he gonna talk about Sonic The Hordgehog? HAHA
ain't that the truth
Seriously. Me, and my friends were just reminiscing about we used to sweat our balls off, listening to this in middle of the summer while playing chess. Good ol' days. Arin is just too damn funny.

Where did he say this?
@@Jacquelinsane probably in one of his reaction videos to the grumps playing his Mario Maker World
I assume it’s cause he’s gotta do commentary with Dan while he’s playing, but yeah still pretty true
The best example to describe how Arin plays games is a puzzle game he did where you had to do the opposite of the rules. The rule said "be careful" inna room full of vases which obviously meant you needed to break the vases. Arin immediately broke them all and then went "I wonder what that rule meant." It's like his subconscious picks up on good game design even when he doesn't realize it.
thats really not obvious at all lmao. Its video gamer instinct to break all the vases and boxes in a game when you see them.

Dear Sequelitis,
It's been 4 years, but not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I know we never really got a proper goodbye, but that doesn't change how I feel about you, and nothing ever will. My pipe dream of a hope is that, someday somehow, you'll find your way back to me and we can be happy again, even if only for a moment. But whatever happens, I'll treasure the moments we've had as we both go forward to something better.

I just got an emulator device from a secret Santa party and Megaman X was the FIRST thing I played due to this video. Ego is spot on about how awesome Megaman X is
Yeah, same, but this does come with the issue of it making it that much more grating when the Gamegrumps incarnation of the dude intentionally acts like he's one of those people the obnoxious tutorials were made for instead of a normal person.
It's like dude, please just stop. We know you're not really *that* dumb and the bit is just kinda obnoxious

@@blackghostcat I hope so! There are some great examples of games that do this fairly recently (Breath of the Wild and Hollow Knight come to mind). But yeah, I come back to this video all the time, the principle it teaches is one of the most useful things I try to keep in mind as a designer.
What projects are you working on?
@@alexchacon778 You should know however that if you actually ever meet someone in real-life like Arin, they're a lost cause.
This is probably one of the videos he enjoyed making the most. He's just so excited and fond of everything he's talking about.
Of course it is; did you not hear him state how rock hard the game makes him? He could sing the praises of MegaMan X until he's blue in the face, and still not lose that enthusiasm.
Ironically, Mega Man X 5 would end up doing the exact same thing Arin talked about in the "MEGA MAN MEGA MAN" scenes
Yes, Alia is fucking annoying.
@Weston Thomas The video was him praising the games for not having "MEGA MAN MEGA MAN" moments. It is ironic because X5 starts a trend where all of the future games have those moments.
DO YOU SEE THE DOOR?!?!
Yeah, that's the origin of it, I'm pretty sure Alia only does that in the later X games
Megaman ZX Advent Starting levels on easy. I'm fine with the Biometal and psudeoroid explanations but not the basic tutorials.
Modern games should have an "I've played video games before" option that skips the stupid intro part that tells you that you need to push A to jump or some shit.
Developers feel the need to include a tutorial because they think they might have added an element to their game that's alien to usual game mechanics.
Having the option to skip tutorials would be nice to get right into the game, but wouldn't it be annoying to be hindered in a game because there was something you didn't know from the developer's tutorial?
Well yeah, for that, a tutorial would be pretty useful, but for people that have played the game and understand the mechanic, it could still be nice.
Games that don't add any mechanics like that and _still_ give a dumb tutorial really don't have much of an excuse, though.
NEW IDEA FOR MY GAME
+Danny Vo were mean like ones that have "press a to jump" its like NO FUCKING SHIT. having a tutorial for new stuff is a good idea though

Me after watching Arin play a lot of games in game grumps: But were they wrong?
The non gaming masses.....does not include a channel named GAME grumps.....they are bad...but they are part of the gaming masses....thats why
In the case of people like Arin or DSP?
No. They are 100% correct.
@@LucaxCorp Not sure what you're saying but the original comment is talking about Arin's argument where he says modern game design treats people like can't recognize simple patterns and treats player's as stupid; but then shows he is stupid himself while playing games
First law of UX design: Never assume that users are idiots, but never forget that they are.
To be fair, Arin actually does quite well with games with less intrusive tutorials like Bloodborne or Dark Souls. He seems to really excel at games where the information is conveyed in ways that don't feel like tutorials.
Remember when we all thought Arin was being hyperbolic about a player not understanding anything about the game they are playing in the opening stage.
And after 7 years of game grumps we now realize that that is just how Arin approaches games.
You'd think, but it's really just a persona, which is the real reason why it's so grating. You think you're irritated because "he doesn't get it and should" but deep down, it's really because "you *know* he gets it and is feigning stupidity since he thinks that's what gets him views"
@@InfernosReaper it absolutely doesn't. its not even that popular of a topic surrounding game grumps, people watch them because of the presence theyve built over the years in making lets plays.
the real thing that probably attracts new audiences is all the fan animations honestly. I guess in that regard, arin and dan having bombastic reactions can feed into those being made, but they can already have plenty of that by just... reacting to the games they're playing. annoying people by being obtuse and ignoring telegraphing _every time he plays a game_ only sounds like a way to get people to click off if anything. At best it makes people like me want to talk about game grumps if only for a moment, but thats not how you retain viewers, and thats not how you inspire fan artists.
the only conclusion that leads me to draw is either that arin is as dense as he acts on camera when playing games by himself, or he just doesn't care anymore.
@@dandyspacedandy I mean, here, we have clear proof that he's *not* that dense, unless some incident happened that caused him to have brain damage that no one on the channel ever mentioned.
Otherwise, the only conclusion is that he started acting over the top for moments that could be memed and to try to bounce off his counterpart, but gradually flanderized that persona into the realm of overly obnoxious.
What keeps people coming is the fact that he's not the only one on the channel and the Grumps doing videos on things people actually want to see.
That aside, when was the last time they had something on the level of Racist Bassist or Sad Hoshi?
@@InfernosReaperThen the persona isn’t funny, it’s just annoying

This is what I really liked about Super Mario 3D World. The game was so fucking simple. It was like, "Bowser captured these Sprixies. You gotta go save em" BOOM!! NO FUCKING TUTORIALS ABOUT HOW TO USE THESE GOD DAMN CLEAR PIPES. THERE'S NO GOD DAMN TUTORIALS HOW TO CLIMB UP FUCKING WALLS. THERE'S NO ANNOYING CHARACTERS ALWAYS TALKING EVERY FIVE SECONDS BECAUSE IM PRETTY SURE THE WAS ONE SPEECH BUBBLE IN THE ENTIRE GAME. That game was, probably, the most perfect Mario game of modern times when it comes to bringing back the classics.
I mean, yeah, there were tutorials on how to do some stuff like ride Plessie, but there were very few tutorials and my god the game was just perfect. I know we're talking about Megaman, but c'mon? Who doesn't agree?
I mean, when you get the lamp, you don't see a message saying "You use this thing to kill these fat-ass ghost creatures" NO. YOU SEE THE LIGHT AND ASSUME "SHIT, MAYBE THESE CAN KILL THE GHOSTS" they make you think about that.... Maybe 3D World's lack of tutorials, dialouge is what Arin likes about it so much, as well as it being simple. But hey, that's just me.
I can, though, understand the tutorials on how to blow up the platforms and tap the blocks because who the fuck in their stupid-ass mind would ever think about using the Gamepad to find shit when they're focusing more on TV... I sure wouldn't, I can tell you that.
Also it's the first game where mario and luigi actually do their job, fixing pipes.

Games these days give you all these buttons to work with, but there are a lot of modern games in which there are mediocre controls, a weird inability to step over a curb, and if there is a jump it isn't affected by how hard you press the button. .
I've known some dumb gamers, but hell, some of those people still figure stuff out in games the old fashioned way. Maybe it's the economy and developers trying to push games out in under a year's development time.
what do you mean it was under powered compared to its competition? not trying to sound crappy, but it was stronger than the Genesis and the TurboGrafx-16.
Jeremy Kamperveen but the genesis also hard expansions such as the 32 x that made the genesis more powerful
Jeremy Kamperveen That's why the snes got a toned down port of Rondo of Blood?
There is a brazilian youtuber called Zangado, even Ubisoft, Konami, CAPCOM and others developers recognize his work. Too bad his only audience are portuguese speaking folks.
turbografx had the cd expansion, so...
bro i can't believe my game theory teacher showed us this video, i'm so happy
Ten years later and this STILL one of my favorite videos of all time.
Still one of my absolute favorite videos. Ever. On the entire internet.
This NEEDS to be required viewing for ANYONE interested in Game Design!
w0rd.
12 years later and still quoting this series... here's to another 12 years woop-Megaman-SHUTUP
'I'm sorry I just-- I don't feel sorry for you' is one of my favourite lines from anything ever.
There is one thing you forgot to mention. When you attack the Mavericks with the weapon that they are weakest against, it does more than damage them more, it also fucks up their attack patterns. Like when you hit Spark Mandrill with the shotgun ice. It freezes him and he has to break out.
They showed us this video in class. Awesome
THEMING
INTRO STAGE
FUCK

Bump'n'Jump

Still love this ... whatever this is. From Newgrounds, to Game Grumps, and these essay things. Man, what a ride.
I’ve watched this video so many times over the past 10 years that it became like a comfort blanket. If I’m ever having trouble sleeping, I put it on. It’s so comforting I fall asleep before 10 minutes in. Love this video so much.
I came here to say RIP Obama. I can see that at least 3 other people beat me to it. Good show!

In the year of our Lord two-thousand and twenty-four I still think about "Where do I go? What do I do? That's bad conveyance," when I play a game and I get stuck because I don't know what to do next.
I don't know why I always come back to this video, sometimes once a month... This is probably the only RUclips video I viewed a lot of times. Hmmm I guess maybe this is my favorite video on RUclips.
I feel you, I have shown this video to everyone I know. I mean this guy is hilarious, the Obama joke comedy gold, and also megaman x is just my favorite game it has everything I don't think there's one video out there giving life to something just as this video does
Same ^^

Electrical engineering = pretty smart
General relativity =pretty fucking smart
The intro stage in mega man x = FUCKING.... GENIUS!!!!!!!!!
Yo I love egoraptor

Lolol
Sasuke Uchiha Tell your brother I said Hi... ohh wait
I come back to this video 12 years later to relive the nostalgia of life being simpler
Honestly the way Arin went through the process of what a new player would more or less do on first introduction to the intro stage is pretty accurate to how it was for me. Mega Man X was my first ever time playing a Mega Man game, so I had no idea what I was doing at all, and eventually figured out what I needed to do just by playing that stage
Pause at 5:43.
My, how the times have changed.
Remember when the player was square and the description was on the right, and you could rate videos 1-5 stars?
Yeah, 2007 had that kind of stuff
Palatano This is 2011 though....
Dude, I'm replying to the guy above me, you serious?
Palatano You didnt tag his username, so yuh
“They don’t know Obama” broke my voice box
"They dont know Obama" while showing a Nelson Mandela picture
- sigh -
I miss Obama.....
Edit: I still lose it on, "Mavis Bacon"
I really hope he just randomly starts doing these again. These are my favorite to watch or listen to before bed
i seriously desire more quiet tutorials in modern games. i don't want the game to pause and read me a short paragraph on how a mechanic works. half life 2 does tutorials so well. a little prompt comes up that will say "use e to pick up objects" and you see some boxes that you can figure out for yourself you can stack up and you understand physics puzzles will be a part of the game. it feels good to figure that out for yourself and not be barraged with a paragraph of information or a cutscene.
Megaman! Megaman! This is called a comment! You can-
Too far
HEY NO FUCKING SHIT!!! I CAN SEE THAT!! ITS JUST SO.... GRRRR... I'M GOING CRAZY HERE!!!
SHUT YOUR MOUTH! I DON'T NEED YOU!
I already KNOW THIS!!
SHUT UP I DONT NEED YOU!!
See, if Egoraptor was a motivational speaker and he believed in you as much as he does this game, the world would feel empowered.
"YO REMEMBER THAT ONE TIME YOU PASSED THAT TEST!? FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK"
This is the video essay that put video essays on the map.
This video right here is going to be 10 years old, and it still great to watch, such an amazing work.
