Which surprises me, because I found the content in BotW very one note and pretty boring tbh. I can only see so many 2 braincell solution shrines before I eventually tap out lol
Jedy Zichterman I’m actually working on a video essay about why BotW isn’t Zelda right now and honestly the more I work on it the more evidence I gather.
@@weebsportsresort682 Are you going to use low fi hip hop beats in the background while usually beeing an english native speaker and advertise skillshare to us around 40% into the video?
Seeing how the footage from sonic adventure 1 in this video is glitches that actually have to be forced to happen. not accidents. he is gonna have to take awhile.. quiet awhile.
Same, man. I get that the guy is up to his neck in work and videos like this one takes way too much work, but I really enjoyed the Sequelitis videos and I wish there's another one at some point
Still one of my favorite thing's Egoraptor has ever said... "what am I doing with my life, I am harshly criticizing Ocarina of Time on the Internet. I'M GONNA GET CRUCIFIED!" this was the last we heard of him, no one knows if he was crucified or is in hiding. Sources say Arin Hanson of Game Grumps may know his whereabouts. Edit: this gem is at 17:25... Egoraptor still has not been found to this day, and Arin Hanson of Game Grumps refuses any comments on the matter of his whereabouts, 8 years after this video was made, and 2 since my comment was. Journalists still trying to dig for the truth.
He does do "walking away from the mic while shouting" moments really well. I like the "NO BIG DEAL" one, too. Maybe he's related to Arin Hanson of Game Grumps.
Like an older, rudimentary Dark Souls. Man that'd be something, wouldn't it? If instead of the Dynasty Warriors/Zelda crossover that's coming up if instead it was a Souls/Zelda crossover
:3 hi ....haha its funny cause i was think dark souls as well xD a sense of exploration an that feeling of you can go anywhere and challenge and such...yeah okay bye vaati :3 love your vids an your awesome
He's a really cool dude but he's such a yes man to everything Arin says, I'd like it if Dan could say just once something that combats with Arin's point of view.
I mean when Arin says stupid stuff without justifying it or giving a good example and Dan just takes his word for it, like with sonic Arin is very rarely fair with Sonic, and I know that most of his games aren't great but he never gives a good reason why he clumps all the games together when he doesn't even give the original trilogy a chance. Dan just agrees with him when he knows nothing about Sonic. An example of someone being fair with sonic even when they don't really like him would be Vinny from Vinesauce. Vinny said that he disliked sonic as a kid because the commercials for genesis told him how to hate and he could never really get into Sonic because of those experiences. Despite that he still gave Sonic a chance by playing through Sonic 3 and Knuckles with Imakuni, and by the end he said that he really enjoyed it.
+NintendoCapriSun hey man I never played a Zelda game except for links awakening and I think its okay but(t) it might be true what he says about the format it could be better with some games like idk say gta is always the same and it sold millions of copies and that is not a bad thing but it might also not be good thing seeing as difference in gameplay is important and that is also what games should do improve the gameplay with new thing but keep the overall feeling of the game the same so yeah give me your idea btw I'm 14
+NintendoCapriSun My issue is more that he sometimes bases his opinions from false information that he provided. Like putting that Lizolof in the wait for an opening thing. They have no way of defending so what was Arin waiting for?
Shit games. What fun is exploration when you already know the best thing you are gonna get is a fucking shrine lmao. You get to a huge area to find shrines lmao
A Link to the Past changed my life as a kid. When I heard a 3D Zelda was on the way for the N64, my 12-year-old imagination exploded into images of mind-blowing cave exploration in an open world. Arin hit on some important topics in this video, and whether you agree with him or not, he did a fantastic job of analyzing what makes Zelda fun and what possibly takes away from a great experience. Exploring the ideas behind what makes games fun can lead to new ideas, which might just inspire some awesome new games!
Aye Smooth! I absolutely think you're right. I agree with most things Arin said, but I still love Ocarina to death. He really did a great job on it and it made me think about a lot of stuff I hadn't payed attention to before
Well said. My favorite game in the series is Twilight Princess. And while I did get frustrated, confused, etc, I still enjoyed the game and what it had to offer. People have their own opinions and that's okay. And they're free to share them, especially if they can explain their train of thought like Arin did. For the same reason Arin doesn't like Ocarina, someone else loves it.
***** Smooth McGroove may have just shared this video on his Google+ page, if he's active there, and his post automatically logged as this "comment." RUclips has been weird lately about pulling in Google+ posts and displaying them as comments on videos when people share them there. Happens to us all the time. ^CG
"There's no challenge jumping over things, no trouble! I just need to press up! I can close my eyes and do this!" Later, Arin has a mental breakdown over just "pressing up" in Majora's Mask.
"You can click that subscribe button right there, and that'll let you know when a new sequilitis is coming out" The wait has been long, but our vigil holds: we must be ready should the signal come. I am sure it will be any day now...
he's said many times he doesn't want to do more but I still hold to hope. These videos are both interesting and so funny that they're a joy to rewatch every now and then
Honestly, the similarity between Arin's suggestions and the product that is Breath of the Wild is uncanny. The only main difference may show up when we get to see villages and NPCs, which may provide plot-based context to some sidequests, perhaps.
@@waterguyroks slower? How is it slower? Its bigger so sure it takes more time to move around. But it not slower. A game that lets you go to the last boss within the first hour is not slow.
@@Darkstander Sure, but at that point you're not playing the game. You're playing a single boss fight. And I get that some people find that fun, and it is good that the option is at least there. But if you want to actually play the game for everything it has to offer and do all the wondrous exploring that Arin spent 30 minutes arguing for, it's hella slow.
@@Itsthatbun one of the best things about botw is that you can play it however you want, at any pace you want. and the world you're in is huge and fun to explore. so even if it slower paced, i feel that its hard to be bored in botw. its not a bad thing to take your time. and again, the game doesn't force you to take your time if you don't want to
Maybe a controversial take, but Zelda isn't really about exploring and hasn't been since the NES games. It's become about exploring again with BOTW and TOTK, but for most of its run, the main gameplay of the series has not revolved around exploring. It's mainly about going to specific locations and solving puzzles there, and completing some levels. I don't even think OoT pretends to be about exploration, it's pretty blatantly guiding you from one dungeon to the next. The fact that people love the game in spite of that tells me that you probably shouldn't judge it as an exploration type game. It should be reviewed on its own merits.
I'd say much of what he says still stands when looking at Ocarina in isolation. Definitely not a perfect game, and its wrinkles in how it tries to translate Zelda into 3D get ironed out (more or less) in its sequels. Even taken on its own, I still think the game is a bit bloated and, at times, lacking in good pacing in its second half. I think the massive asterisk to Ocarina's name is that it was really the first of its kind in 3D, and the fact that it got a lot right on its first try is incredible... ... But that said, this video is entirely about removing Ocarina from the context of its time, seeing how well it stacks up today when _compared_ to its brethren. I think it would be a little narrow-minded to try and encircle Ocarina and other 3D entries in their own bubble of "different," when they bare the name of the series and still attempt at loosely following the exploration/combat template set by Ocarina. Especially after Breath of the Wild, I think Arin was on the right track when he essentially questions just how "Zelda" is Ocarina of Time? Considering they trended the series back to the roots of the series with the last couple of entries (though I think TOTK was far less successful at that), Ocarina's shadow over the series needed some productive rethinking.
tbf though I've done that a few times, but I was just leaving the boots on out of laziness and not wanting to switch them out after every area that needed them like in the water temple
@@xXMalakianXVII Yes. Yes, it absolutely is. ...did you think you had something? It's not even comparable. What saves the item switching in OOT is the fact that you can have 3 equipped. This makes it bearable DESPITE the slow, clunky menu. The boots aren't equipable on C buttons, therefore, they suffer from this issue. Majora's mask improved the menu speed, but doesn't have boots, so it's also not an issue there. You should avoid embarrassing yourself by making smartypants sarcastic remarks when you don't even understand what the issue is. Cheers.
I feel like through playing oot and majoras mask there’s a lot of times where I’m like, “what other items can I find before I go where I think is the main path to the boss” i wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing
Watching this video, it really seems like Breath of the Wild was specifically designed for Arin. All the way down to the fucking bats. They make it so the bats are always in swords length like he explained.
MrChocodemon I'm sure you know by now, but he hates it. If you watch the clips while he says "Bomb bowling", they all show Link missing, or a explosion (from a bomb) hitting Link. He stated that in Game Grump's last Mario Maker video.
People mentioning how BOTW answered all his concerns here. He predicted a ton. But he ALSO predicted TOTK with the goron friend section and that was insane.
Gooty cuz he's too busy with game grumps which I personally don't enjoy at all. I think game grumps is annoying, unfunny, and I can barely sit through one minute of a video. I liked it back when egoraptor did these kinds of videos. But sadly it seems like those days are long gone.
The Japanese version of A Link to the Past doesn't tell you where to go. I think they just put that in the western releases cause that was back when Nintendo was convinced that we were all really bad at video games.
2015: oh arin is just taking his time with the next sequaltis 2016: i bet he's making a 2 parter or a hour long vid 2017:please answer my prayer arin, make the next sequaltis 2018:God is Dead, he has forsaken us for our sin of believing Ocarina of time is better than a link to the past.
I honestly think it's dead now because of this one. Because I guess apparently the really immature Zelda geeks couldn't handle his opinion of this game.
+Lightning Shy mean, I don't know why Arin would give a single fuck about the stupid Zelda geeks, look at the video, look at them 250K likes, dude he KNOWS that VASTLY more people like these videos than not. Maybe its because he's doing Star Bomb and goes on tours for that and he's doing grumps (which he also goes on tour for) And he had his youtube red show... I think the guys free time to do sequelitis is non-existent
I love sequilitis. Just the way he presents everything and the pacing and the Arin jokes, it's so good it makes me feel so good. I am constantly in a conflict to where I would LOVE more sequilitis but I am also aware that if he was just forced to make more it would be phoned in and it would not be merely as emotional or passionate as these episodes are....so instead I just watch these over and over again. I would love to make a series in honor of sequilitis. It's so good. It's probably my favorite work of arins
Agreed, I love how seamlessly he flows from topic to topic. It's unfortunate that this video is so poorly received. While his opinions didn't agree with the majority, the way he structured the video was incredibly entertaining, which was kind of the whole point.
@@lordsuinax3470 The video is really bad when you give it any thought. Watch even parts of the "this is how you don't play" series about Arin playing the Zelda games. All he does is cry because he is bad at the games and refuses to get better. Its like if someone fell into the first pit in a Super Mario game and complained that the game expects you to jump over obstacles.
Someone did a couple episodes of The Fake Sequelitis, but I hate to admit this, the guy's voice just isn't that funny to me. That was what did half of this content for me: Arin has the voice and deliberate inflection of a natural entertainer. I kept WANTING to hear him say more. It was hilarious. It reminded me of this episode of Last Comic Standing where one of the guys had some really funny jokes but he was telling them with this scared voice and expression, and I was like "wtf is wrong with you, if you can't chill out for a small panel of judges then are you really going to make it onstage" it's a bit rough but honest. The judges were laughing some of the time, but I couldn't, even though the jokes were legit funny. If someone like Arin told them, I would have been rolling on the floor.
Okay, I've often called Ocarina of Time one of my favorite games of all-time, BUT there were a LOT of very valid points made in this video. I'm not going to defend them, but the thing is, any film professor will tell you, "You can't take a film out of its time." And to a certain extent, the same can be said about a lot of video games. Not all of them, but a lot. 1998 was still during a shift in the spectrum, companies were still learning how to go about the new world, like 3D movies were a little while ago. Companies weren't sure how to go about things, so a lot of design choices were borrowed from actual film (see Twilight Princess). And it was the first one. But my fondest memory of Ocarina of Time, was fighting Ganon. As a child, the scale of everything was so epic, and it wasn't clear what to do right away, as there was no clear "dunegeon item" to use. There was every item you collected throughout the game and had to figure out how to do it. THEN, the ONE THING that was always constant was taken away: your sword. You had to get creative and really think about how to win. That is why Ocarina of Time stood out. It was the lasting impression I was left with. I wasn't thinking about the water temple and all that bullshit after beating Ganon. I just knew, I beat Ganon, it was an awesome fight and I had a huge sense of fulfillment for doing it. Yes, it's about time to break down OoT critically, because Nintendo fell into a slump of getting very formulaic since then. But since A Link Between Worlds, it makes me think Zelda could be headed back in the right direction again. But as I started, you can't take some things out of its time and looking at what Ocarina of Time did in its own time, it was a huge achievement. Ocarina of Time isn't perfect, far from it as pointed out here, but it is definitely one of the most memorable experiences I had playing a game as a child.
The problem here isn't really admitting whether or not Ocarina has flaws. It's the fact that a lot of the things he pointed out as flaws and bad game design- aren't really flaws so much as they are just him REALLY sucking at the game.
RustyKoi he is joking and trolling acting like he sucks at it, the waiting fighting system does drag the combat down or possibly the combat is slightly flawed enough to anger or annoy someone really listen to what he says about z targeting and the design of traps and levels due to 3d what is okay with 2d might not work out in 3d
I can’t believe this was made seven years ago. I remember being so excited when it showed up on my feed, because I’d been waiting years for another sequelitis.
Watching in 2018, this is still funny as hell. I know people gave Arin a lot of crap about his sequelitis videos, but his art style and the way he talks and get legitimately angry is just too damn funny.
Minumer he’s doing a show and it’s recorded at 1:00 am after he runs a company. It’s not the same arin that reviewed these games because it’s all he did. Think about it with that in mind. It’s not 100% power arin. It’s 5% power arin, who is using 3% so the show can be entertaining and he doesn’t leave Danny hanging.
Every single other Sequelitis is fine, it's this one that's a complete crapshoot and has done nothing but stir the pot when discussing OoT with insanely stupid criticisms that are just mimicked from this shit. If there's any consolation though, it's that he'd probably perform awfully at ALttP as well.
I mean he has ADHD. And he’s trying to run a show at the same time and be funny. Everyone learns in different ways, and for him, tutorials and text don’t do it. Probably same reason he struggled in high school. He’s just not wired that way.
@@sloppyphart7879 That’s my point though, I don’t think he understood how anyone could enjoy them. Nowadays he’s mellowed out on a lot of these things, probably because he’s older and has less of a belief that everyone plays the same way he does. You can see that he generally makes less criticisms like this in GG episodes, and when he does, they’re more presented as obligatory gestures to be funny that always end in (essentially) “but whatever though-if you can enjoy it, good for you.” He’s more willing today to view his opinions on game design as opinions rather than fact-which, if you liked his habit of ruffling feathers, makes him a little more boring, but it does definitely make him more palatable to people who think differently about games.
But he also refuses to try and learn, resulting in him then pissing and moaning or shitting on mechanics when it takes 2 seconds to read how to play or just do the damn tutorial. I have ADHD, not a excuse for him.
@@VGamingJunkieVT But like... a clam isn't a dark souls boss? It's hard to be patient when you're dealing with a clam because there's no good reason that the clam should be a threat, and it shouldn't block your progress.

I KNOW RIGHT? when I was watching the trailer and looked at nintendos description I couldnt stop thinking about Arin! I want to know his opinions on it!!!
If this video taught me something... it is that you can nitpick every game. That being said, all criticism shown in this video here are valid. It shows that with increased complexity of games things can sneak in that are negative. Sometimes those things are there because of the engine, sometimes because of the way it is programmed (like the time it takes to open the menu to put on the iron boots and get out again... it could have been put on some hot key). This video still rings true 10 years later.
You're actually taking Arin's gaming-related opinions seriously? After Game Grumps has proven, on hundreds of different occasions, that he's terrible at games? That, for all he complains about "bad game design", whenever a game shows what he believes to be "good game design", he just gets fucking pissy That he's just an impatient twat? That he's just a nostalgiatard? This is the guy who got lost on Dragon Roost fucking Island, for crying out loud. He complains about games giving you an objective, when HE'S THE PERSON THAT NEEDS THEM THE MOST. /pointlesslyangryrantover
I kind of don't get all the hate Skyward Sword gets. I have seen people treating it like it is the devils version of Zelda 2. I mean the gameplay were okay, the world design were pretty bad, but the story, characters, bosses and dungeons were much better than other entries in the series.
I've been thinking a lot about this video since I first saw it, because it is a fantastic example of Arin's duality. On the one hand, he can make fantastic, intelligent arguments. On the other hand, he is incapable of separating his arguments from his own bias at times. Arin's most consistent failing as a critic of game design, I think, is that he builds entire critiques on the foundation that games which place an emphasis on player discovery and more free-form gameplay are inherently better than more guided experiences. Except, they're not inherently better. It's simply his preference. There's something to be said for experiencing an artist's exact vision, the same way we do with film and literature. It is still art, and you still have the freedom to interpret it in your own way whether or not the pixels on the screen have the same freedom as in other games. Again, I get it. It's not Arin's thing, and that's fine. How many times have we heard Danny chide him for never, ever reading? How many times has Danny been surprised at the movies Arin hasn't seen? He'd probably scoff at me comparing games and books to each other because he wants to experience his entertainment in a way where he has full control to create his own story. He really, really doesn't want a story told to him, or an experience meticulously designed for him to go through in a specific manner. Doesn't matter how good it is. Again, that's fine because everybody has their preferences. It's not a solid foundation to critique anything, though. Essentially, Arin makes the mistake that separates good critics from bad ones. He Judges a game based on what it is vs what he wants it to be, rather than how well it achieved what it was actually trying to do. He criticizes Ocarina for being less open than the previous games, and for telling you where to go, completely dismissing the fantastic art, music, deeper combat, and dungeon/puzzle design. The combat makes him wait a little bit, so it's worse even though it's better (what?). The puzzle elements don't all fit in your eyeballs at once, so the puzzles are worse. Does he lack object permanence? The disparate puzzle elements and vertical, layered dungeons of Ocarina are precisely why those puzzles are more satisfying to me. You had to actually remember shit as you went along, trying to keep everything that you knew did something in mind while you saw new things that, might, have a connection with it. Most importantly, it doesn't let him wander around an over-world forever, trying to find the next dungeon and discovering secrets that rely on sheer luck to find, so it's not as good as the the first game, or even LTTP. To him, player discovery and agency trumps everything. Which is totally fine, as long as he knows it's a preference and not an objective quality upon which to critique a game, which...he doesn't always seem to. Certainly not in this video.
ForeverMasterless i think what arin meant with the combat thing is that it is better, it is just poorly implemented in oot though i agree with everything else you said, hell i play a lot of jrpgs and wrpgs and i can tell you that that jrpgs are not as open ended as wrpgs and focus more on the story and shit while wrpgs focus on the world and exploring but neither is inherently better than the other and i love both genres
From the first sequelitis (castlevania 1 vs 2), I'd say that your assumption that Arin's bias is towards free form exploration isn't quite accurate. The whole free form thing comes from the context of "Zelda games", which is why he starts this LttP vs OoT video with neither of those games, but with the first Zelda, which is a very unguided game that relies on the player's desire to explore for most of its progression. The video details the slow progression of Zelda games from a wide-open "choose where you want to go" exploration set-up to a series of set pieces and challenges for a player to clear, culminating in what Arin believes to be the representation of this progression: Skyward Sword. "Is it better? Is it worse? I dunno, but it's not the same!"
ForeverMasterless "He criticizes Ocarina for being less open than the previous games, and for telling you where to go, completely dismissing the fantastic art, music" 4:24 He did touch on the graphics and music. Or were you stating that he didn't go into enough detail about how good it is? "deeper combat" 6:28 pretty clear detail about the combat. and just in case you missed where he says something good about the combat 9:29 "Dungeon/puzzle design" 11:30 It seems that everyone only noticed when he spoke poorly about the game, and not the good things he mentioned. Also, He loves ALTTP, but he did critique it as well 2:00 People need to understand that to truly love a game, you must acknowledge its flaws and embrace them, not ignore them like it doesn't exist. I love FFVIII, The Drawing system (although new and innovative, and genuinely a cool idea) sucks, The tutorials all over the first 3 hours of the game, The Junction system is dumb and the characters rely on it too much (same with the GFs), The Stupid Queen of cards, and many more...I still love FFVIII
pakapakapaka I'm not saying it's a flawless game, or that he didn't throw it a couple (very small) bones. I'm saying ALL of his critiques are based on this idea that play agency and discovery trump everything else, no matter what, at all times. They're all coming from that place, and it's a flawed starting point. I find combat in LTTP boring, and the hitboxes are fucked. I'm much more likely to feel like I got a cheap hit on me in that game than Ocarina. But, yeah, I guess you don't have to wait for an opening ever and you can can kill bats multiple at a time, so that proves how it's better, right? Arin really just comes across here as an impatient gamer, using his own preferences as a basis for critique, and lauding his favorite game while decrying a sequel that wasn't made with his exact tastes in mind. It's quite annoying.
For anyone that wants to see a FAIR review of Ocarina that still pinpoints every flaw, go seek out Mattewmatosis' review on youtube. Arin himself mentioned liking the guy, which is how I know about him, but he's a million goddamn times better at it than Arin could ever hope to be, and Arin would probably even agree with that.
I definitely wouldn't wait over a decade for this video. Sry, I just checked how long the wait was. Ten fold would be 26 years and 8 months. Still was a fun video though :D
Alexander Inoa we criticize him because many of his complaints are changes that were put in to cater to the part of the fandom that he's not part of...
Because he doesn't want to sit around reading bullshit just to know where to go. If the game can't tell you how to do something purely from intuition, then it's not well designed for an explorative adventure game.
Neilson Truong - If he’s not willing to read the text then it’s still his fault he doesn’t know where to go. If he can’t even do that much maybe he should stick to linear games where he can’t get lost.
@@LucaxCorp Thats his point though. Ocarina of Time is more linear than 'open world'. Most of the time its literally finding an item and using it on a block way to get to another segment of the exact same thing. If you need to read to progress in an 'open world' game then thats not good.
@@lilkxdude5659 But Ocarina of time never tried or wanted to be an open world game. If it was made to be an open world game then of course it'd fail at that, but that's the point: Ocarina of Time is story focused and linear while games like Breath of the wild give you all the freedom you want. Both are good at what they're doing. If you like them or not is up to personal preference.
My favorite part of Game Grumps was when Arin died repeated to a Shell Blade in the water temple and ragequit Majora's Mask cuz he couldn't beat Gomess. :)
I don't think Sequelitis is coming back. Arin is a busy dude with Game Grumps, (his let's play channel) Starbomb,(the band he's a part of) NSP, ( the other band he's a part of) etc... plus, he's married. You've might've already seen at least one of Barry's (Barry is the former editor of Game Grumps, just in case you might not have known) "how about this game" videos, but they're pretty much the new Sequelitis at this point. Also sorry if you already knew what Game Grumps, Starbomb, and NSP were, but I didn't want to just assume that you knew what they were.
He’s lost all credibility though after they played through OOT & Majoras Mask on game grumps. Like Erin sucks so bad his arguments are so invalid. And Erin just tends to put his foot in his mouth.
ruclips.net/video/UFWI5Ff5NEI/видео.html watch from 30:45. Im saying he so bias and negative towards 3d Zelda's. And his ability to "look at the game objectively" gets shit on by him not adjusting his play-style, tactics, or ability to read. The game tells you how to play and gives the player what they need to continue. Erin just wants to cut corners, skip anything, and be done asap. But Erin plays through, while blaming his mistakes on the game and then making a video where he's right and the games wrong. Thats why his critics and opinions fall flat.
+Sir Ridley Same. I think they should make uploading a bit more rare, and just put more effort into their videos. It now just feels like all these videos are made in a fabfic.
+Evelyn G Except their subs are constantly and consistently increasing, so your statement makes no sense. +Sir Ridley Having what amounts to 15% of your followers watching every single video is actually really good. What, you think most subscribers watch even half the videos a channel uploads?
The problem is, that people just aren't interested in all games. Unlike other channels, that go into some kind of direction(either specific genres, specific consoles, or specific franchises) GG go for everything. This leads to people not being interested in some stuff. I am a die hard GG fan, but even I don't watch all their stuff, because some games just don't interest me at all. I mean, the main point of GG is the commentary and not the game itself, but if the game is really boring or stupid, even the best commantary can't make me watch it.
Every Zelda fan ever: (including me) "THE FIRST ZELDA I PLAYED WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD IS THE BEST!" "NO, THE FIRST ZELDA I PLAYED WHEN *I* WAS 12 YEARS OLD IS THE BEST!" So I have accepted the fact that all Zelda games are outstanding in their own right. The person who says the best Zelda game is ____ and is better than ___ means absolutely nothing and is going to change nobody's opinion anymore.
Alex Vennos Ha! Very funny! Get this: I know this kid who played Hyrule Warriors when he was 12! While it was a great game, in my opinion at least, he's gonna get crushed in the future when other people are arguing for skyward sword and Zelda U.

To be fair, he's never really tried that hard. He's said before he doesn't really focus on gsmeplay during playthroughs, choosing just to roll through and have fun. Plus, he already hates the games, so it's kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The funny thing is years later Arin starts playing Majoras mask and tries to follow the formula that ocarina of time gave even though the game was mainly sidequest heavy and doesn't want you to play it like you would ocarina of time.
Arin is so busy trying to prove a point that every 3D Zelda is bad or the same thing as OoT (excluding BoTW) that he tries to brute force his way from point A to point B only stopping t talk about how bad and linear it is when a game is open or in the case of SS get lost on a path that is on 1 side a straight line to you goal and on the other a shortcut to an earlier location for if you come back to the begining instead of using a later on bird statue then he runs around for 3+ episodes complaining that the game holds your hand to much while struggling over 45-60 minutes to find something that will take most people about 10 minutes to find bc he's so busy complaining that the game doesn't let you figure things out and when it does it's in an "unintuitive way" Arin thinks that being told that there is a switch hidden in a room isn't a puzzle even though it's what all Zelda's do In 3D Zelda's they hide them out of sight and make you look around for them in ALttP they are usually under pots or skulls or something else that hides it from the players vision so you have to look around
@@alexskocy9948 Its like with Castlevania, he played part 1 and Zelda 1 and since then thinks every Zelda/Castlevania has to be like that but the games switched their main genre pretty much after part 1. LotP and Castlevania 2 and later are no longer adventures/linear jump n runs. Zelda went more towards adventure-RPG and Castlevania went towards Metroidvania but that is not inherently bad, its just a taste thing. The things he says about Z-targeting for example are all true, clunky and sloppy but when he starts talking about the story its just a taste thing...dialogue in a game isnt inherently a bad thing but for him it is since its "not what Zelda 1 was like". Yeah guess what the genre is different....
Arin really was like, a very different person back in this era. Its so, unfamiliar now, despite this being the Arin most people knew cause of his animation days.

@@Ro-gp8lj But it woildn't be good. Content made by people who don't actually want to do it is not good. Have you watched pretty much any of the 3d zelda playthroughs on the grumps channel, Arin just keeps complaining all the way through and it's boring. All that just means that instead of demanding them to do stuff they don't wanna do, we should just appreciate what we're getting.
@@erikasakura7721 No you're super right aboyt that (i think, i stopped watching grumps for almost that exact reason) but there was an interview that he said he just had to choose between grumps and animation, but then he does the starbomb video... im just hoping.
Back here after TOTK. Gotta say, they did what Arin wanted in BOTW and only expanded on them now. Cave exploration, it’s own take on the dark world/future world, and they made our dungeon companions super useful. When the Sages in Ocarina gave us their seals, they said we got their power… but no we did not. Now the Sages have unique abilities and fight along side you. This Sequelitis criticisms were fixed and exceeded imho. Edit: Oh and like BOTW they have actual puzzles that army whacking a diamond or shooting an eyeball. And they’re FUN! I hate when I find a “Rauru’s Gift” shrine where all I did was find it in a cave. That’s not hard. At least have me carry the crystal thru the cave. Other than that, they’re all fun!
Even though I really like those games their dungeons are hot garbage, and the puzzles can be cheesed in so many different ways that they’re very often underwhelming
I love how he talks about how OoT has so much waiting but never mentions the part where you have to wait the most... “Mweep... mweep... mweep... mweep...”
That part is super weird because it's clearly intentional. You don't make something that is obviously objectively not fun and somehow not notice and leave it in the game accidentally. So ... why? Were they just playing a joke on the player? Maybe they just thought it was funny. It kinda is. Maybe the designer sketched out the layout and had the king dude sitting in front of the door and after they'd actually designed the character they realised that he wouldn't be able to move quickly and no one considered changing it so that a door just opened up beside him or something.
@@satan-kun8974 There are a lot of enemies who if you just let hit you when your shield is up they open their hit window sooner and more predictably. But yeah there's still so much god damn waiting in this game. I'm looking at you mr sqeaky ass zora.
There have been SO many goddamn times playing BotW (and now TotK) where I would think back to this amazing commentary vid and genuinely wonder if they watched Arin's analysis and REALLY took it to heart. Because he is so directly on point with his critique and the Switch Zelda games are such a profound, invigorating, mind-blowing breath of fresh air that recaptured that feeling of eager exploration, rewarded curiosity, and versatile resourcefulness of the OG Zelda.
I love Ocarina of Time as much as the next guy, but every piece of criticism Arin gives is absolutely correct. It doesn't mean it's any less of a good game. Every game has flaws. Appreciate Arin for having the balls to point it out. This was an extremely interesting and informative video.
Joey Matheny I grew up with all the Zelda games, and the treasure chest thing is something that I noticed myself! I always got incredibly excited to see a treasure chest, but now I don't feel that excited because I can usually guess what it's going to be before I even open it. But getting the big key was always like, "YES!!!! NOW I CAN GO OPEN THAT HUGE AWESOME LOOKING CHEST AND DESTROY THE BOSS!!!!" See the difference? It goes from "I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!" to... "meh... lame... another compass."
I notice that most of arin's complaints seem to be, for the most part, fixed in Breath of the Wild. Open world, free exploration, no nagging companions, Story isn't forcing you to do things in certain orders, No waiting to attack enemies, a real sense of adventure, and a different item mechanic and dungeon mechanic Edit: Years later, after becoming an actual adult and having a better sense of my own opinions, as well as finally being able to look past nostalgia, I actually agree with Arin a good bit. I’m not with him trashing 3D zelda. But me personally, I like the higher sense of adventure, discovery and freedom that 2D zeldas bring. 3D zelda is great of course. But I see those being better at telling more straightforward, linear stories, rather than being an adventurous explorative experience. But that’s just me
as I rewatch this today, I wonder how blissful and liberating Egoraptor might have felt when playing Breath of the Wild - it basically responds to all of his critiques about Ocarina of Time's 'open' world
You should watch the let's play of him playing Breath of the Wild on the Game Grumps channel. He loves it and keeps raving about how cool and fun it is.
that, my dude, was a precious tip! I did not know about game grumps and now I'm hooked watching them talk about Breath of the Wild and enjoying it a lot! thanks so much
juca oliveira a month ago was when u found out about gamegrumps?!he fucking made a video on this channel about it like 4-5 fucken years ago. when it was starting with jontron an now with danny. geez what have u been doing with your life.
haha I know I know, it's just that I hadn't really been following egoraptor! I had come across this sequilitis video long ago and then when I finished BOTW, I remembered this and came to rewatch it! the game grumps are amazing though, and I've been thoroughly enjoying their content since I found out about them
My own thoughts on Arin's opinion is that... well this wasn't exactly Link to the Past vs. Ocarina of Time, this felt more like Ocarina of Time vs. Modern Games. A lot of his points of what Ocarina doesn't have... weren't in Link to the Past either, and he contradicts himself with the mention of Link Between Worlds. He doesn't like Ocarina of Time because of the waiting you do... yet in Link Between Worlds the waiting is even worse.
in OOT u do a lot of messenger work like the death mtn example is it fun to go back to the castle (in a huge empty overworld) that u already came from so u could go to death mtn what was the point to lengthen gametime this game is long and half of it is for that shit right there(constantly crossing huge hyrule field) sure u have epona but at the 2nd half of the game so 1st half u hav to go through that it was in attempt to makeit seem big and spacious the problem its empty and that's boring that's why I like link to the past more I don't hate OOT but the game isn't one I can play on the fly I know its gonna take a lot outta me which is why I barely revisit it
Wayne Ekeh I'm not a Zelda fan at all and all I'd really agree with is OOT is... well overrated is a strong word, but you may get what I mean. It's not a masterpiece imo, it was a tremendously successful transition from 2D to 3D, yes and had a revolutionary game mechanic used later, but the game itself is... it's ok. (Note this is the exact sentiment I feel over FF7) Link to the Past is just... well basic. Neither of them really lose the "spirit" of Zelda or whatever... on a personal note if Arin needed to wait for Link Between Worlds to get his fix of nice combat and dungeon exploration/chest placement, I'd have given him a copy of Ys: The Oath in Felghana and told him his prayer was answered a decade earlier. :v
AmAxel35 "Overated" is not a strong word. OOT is definitely overrated. No game can live up to the reputation that OOT has somehow accumulated. That said, OOT is a great game; it's just not the pinnacle of civilization that some people would claim it is.
Just a mention on the comparison with ALBW. Waiting may be present, but I don't find it at all worse than OoT. Also, there's no set exploration at all. Like, with the way the item system works, you can take the game in whatever order you want. Granted, the whole "order of exploration" idea made the game more accessible, it took the whole "adventure aspect" WAY down, to me at least. So there's that. Also, OoT, while a really fun game, is definitely overrated.
While a lot of Arin's observations about game design make sense......you just know that if he WASN'T given those specific instructions and locations on the map he'd be going "WHICH WAY DO I GOOOO? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DOOOO?"
I've thought about this, since it's a common Egoraptor complaint. What you've got to understand is that Arin isn't just playing the game. He's devoting 50% (probably more) of his attention to making an improv comedy show, attention that he can't focus on problem solving. Additionally, if he doesn't know where to go, he can't get to new material off which to bounce.

Cusionmon maybe that's because danny actually agrees with what arin says.

Less handholding but even slower
Thats.... kind of the point of the video?
Did no one explore in Ocarina?

Watching this video, it really seems like Breath of the Wild was specifically designed for Arin. All the way down to the fucking bats. They make it so the bats are always in swords length like he explained.
Zachary Haynes Even the Goron thing. It's like Nintendo was watching this while they were making BoTW
Koopa Kool Nahh. The Goron sequence was SHIT and he was just a ball and chain tied to the player. Fucking hated that part.
Phantom Hourglass already did the "Goron helping you through the dungeon" thing much better anyway.
The Last Wind Waker Yeah but that game in general wasn't very good. And it's pretty forgettable as far as Zelda titles go.
I really enjoyed Phantom Hourglass. Granted, it's one of the only two Zelda games I actually PLAYED.
I still don't know if he liked bomb bowling.

I'm sure you know by now, but he hates it. If you watch the clips while he says "Bomb bowling", they all show Link missing, or a explosion (from a bomb) hitting Link.
He stated that in Game Grump's last Mario Maker video.
MrChocodemon it's pretty obvious that he hates it considering after he was talking about it he's like FUCK THIS GAME

The Japanese version of A Link to the Past doesn't tell you where to go. I think they just put that in the western releases cause that was back when Nintendo was convinced that we were all really bad at video games.

2022:oh hey he made that sequeltis
I honestly think it's dead now because of this one. Because I guess apparently the really immature Zelda geeks couldn't handle his opinion of this game.
I remember him telling dan in a not so recent game grumps episode that he wanted to do a sequelitis for BotW so keep your fingers crossed!
"Phoned in" is the Arin Hanson MO recently
I admire your ability to be able to accept that something that you love has flaws.
The problem here isn't really admitting whether or not Ocarina has flaws. It's the fact that a lot of the things he pointed out as flaws and bad game design- aren't really flaws so much as they are just him REALLY sucking at the game.
I agree with you 100% Ocarina of Time is my favourite game aswell. Thinking that it's perfect and doesn't have flaws is just silly.
RustyKoi
he is joking and trolling acting like he sucks at it, the waiting fighting system does drag the combat down or possibly the combat is slightly flawed enough to anger or annoy someone really listen to what he says about z targeting and the design of traps and levels due to 3d what is okay with 2d might not work out in 3d
RustyKoi That's hilarious because Ocarina of Time is so fucking tame compared to a Link To The Past.
I can’t believe this was made seven years ago. I remember being so excited when it showed up on my feed, because I’d been waiting years for another sequelitis.
You’re gonna be waiting for another 7 years
Lol it’s at 9 now
Watching in 2018, this is still funny as hell. I know people gave Arin a lot of crap about his sequelitis videos, but his art style and the way he talks and get legitimately angry is just too damn funny.
It kinda does though. He can't actually live up to his own advice.
Why doesn't he upload on this channel anymore?
@@tristenporter9811 Game Grumps and other projects. Or maybe he just doesn't like animating anymore. Those are my guesses
Coming back to Egoraptor's old flash videos armed with the knowledge that he's incapable of learning game mechanics really clarifies everything.
I mean he has ADHD. And he’s trying to run a show at the same time and be funny. Everyone learns in different ways, and for him, tutorials and text don’t do it. Probably same reason he struggled in high school. He’s just not wired that way.
@@Foggovor I have ADHD. It doesn't make you retarded.
@@Foggovor then he really shouldn't be critiquing games that he's not "wired" to enjoy then.

I may have just stood up and applauded that rant about Skyward Sword.

/pointlesslyangryrantover
I know I did.
Daniel Herzig
There is a difference between a good opinion and an opinion fueled completely by autism.
SSGuy
Which is in itself another opinion fueled by subjective force. Put on some diapers, you're leaking.
Also, He loves ALTTP, but he did critique it as well 2:00
People need to understand that to truly love a game, you must acknowledge its flaws and embrace them, not ignore them like it doesn't exist. I love FFVIII, The Drawing system (although new and innovative, and genuinely a cool idea) sucks, The tutorials all over the first 3 hours of the game, The Junction system is dumb and the characters rely on it too much (same with the GFs), The Stupid Queen of cards, and many more...I still love FFVIII
pakapakapaka
I'm not saying it's a flawless game, or that he didn't throw it a couple (very small) bones.
The thing with the waiting is that there are ways to get around waiting. Like circling your enemy. Or getting closer to them.
Even if you disagree with any points raised, there is no denying this video is immensely entertaining. Worth the weight ten fold.
I definitely wouldn't wait over a decade for this video. Sry, I just checked how long the wait was. Ten fold would be 26 years and 8 months. Still was a fun video though :D
i like how you mention it's worth the wait even though the whole video was practically about waiting and how it's bad

Mouful's Second Channel Yes, but people are being ridiculously disrespectful and arrogant when they criticize Arin. That’s the problem here.
Arin: I hate how modern Zelda grabs you by the hand all the time.
Also Arin: WTF DO I DO!!!!

And Erin just tends to put his foot in his mouth.
ruclips.net/video/UFWI5Ff5NEI/видео.html
watch from 30:45.
I would dedicate the rest of my likes to this, forever if that was a possibility. And that Woodland never liked again

Having what amounts to 15% of your followers watching every single video is actually really good.

The funny thing is years later Arin starts playing Majoras mask and tries to follow the formula that ocarina of time gave even though the game was mainly sidequest heavy and doesn't want you to play it like you would ocarina of time.
Arin is so busy trying to prove a point that every 3D Zelda is bad or the same thing as OoT (excluding BoTW) that he tries to brute force his way from point A to point B only stopping t talk about how bad and linear it is when a game is open or in the case of SS get lost on a path that is on 1 side a straight line to you goal and on the other a shortcut to an earlier location for if you come back to the begining instead of using a later on bird statue then he runs around for 3+ episodes complaining that the game holds your hand to much while struggling over 45-60 minutes to find something that will take most people about 10 minutes to find bc he's so busy complaining that the game doesn't let you figure things out and when it does it's in an "unintuitive way"
Arin thinks that being told that there is a switch hidden in a room isn't a puzzle even though it's what all Zelda's do
In 3D Zelda's they hide them out of sight and make you look around for them in ALttP they are usually under pots or skulls or something else that hides it from the players vision so you have to look around
Arin really was like, a very different person back in this era. Its so, unfamiliar now, despite this being the Arin most people knew cause of his animation days.
Whether you think think that ocarina of time is good or bad, we all can agree that the music is awesome
Abso-fucking-lutely
Definitely! The music is absolutely the aspect of OoT that has aged the best by far.
Oh def
The rrst of the game,,,up to debate
Ocarina of time had some music from the previous Zelda, like A link to past and NES Zelda.
Arin complained about that too. He said they are all tuned in the same key. They're all the same...i wonder when his childhood committed sudoku.
You can tell that this isn’t gameplay from Arin because you see that the player uses the shield.
And the player is actually good at the game.
I wouldn’t compare someone playing the game to gather footage for their persuasive video essay with someone playing while only half paying attention (at best)
I think it's pretty clear Arin wouldn't use his experience from game grumps to write a detailed essay on a game...
@@fidget0227 Except in this video he still fights most enemies by either impatiently mashing B, or by using his inconsistent and unsatisfying "wait, attack" method. He also never killed the shellblade.
Shields are worthless in Oot honestly unless your unskilled or speedrunning the absolute only times a shield is required or is the only viable option is the three deku scrubs at the deku tree before ghoma and the short time in the spirit temple as well as the one sun in ganons castle. Otherwise there are better or faster methods

All that just means that instead of demanding them to do stuff they don't wanna do, we should just appreciate what we're getting.

No, they didn't. ToTK is somehow even less of a Zeld agame than BotW was. The dungeons are just gone now, replaced with single puzzle rooms.
Even though I really like those games their dungeons are hot garbage, and the puzzles can be cheesed in so many different ways that they’re very often underwhelming

I've watched that Big Beluga Whale scoot aside at least 40 times in my life. We can all perfectly hear it just reading your comment.

Funny to see Arin doesn't use his shield in any of these clips either lol

I love Ocarina of Time as much as the next guy, but every piece of criticism Arin gives is absolutely correct. It doesn't mean it's any less of a good game.
Every game has flaws. Appreciate Arin for having the balls to point it out. This was an extremely interesting and informative video.
I felt the treasure chest thing was a little nitpicky, but he did have a lot of good points.
If you truly love something- you admit it's flaw's, accept them, and continue loving it
I like this comment.
Nycro 1) Comment makes perfect sense.
2) Doesn't realise I whore myself to Arin and not Zelda fanbases. 0/10
arin accidentally produced about a decade of memes from this video alone
I notice that most of arin's complaints seem to be, for the most part, fixed in Breath of the Wild. Open world, free exploration, no nagging companions, Story isn't forcing you to do things in certain orders, No waiting to attack enemies, a real sense of adventure, and a different item mechanic and dungeon mechanic
Edit: Years later, after becoming an actual adult and having a better sense of my own opinions, as well as finally being able to look past nostalgia, I actually agree with Arin a good bit. I’m not with him trashing 3D zelda. But me personally, I like the higher sense of adventure, discovery and freedom that 2D zeldas bring. 3D zelda is great of course. But I see those being better at telling more straightforward, linear stories, rather than being an adventurous explorative experience. But that’s just me
Seems like nintendo has listened to people like arin, and is giving them what they want. I think Arin's gonna love Breath of the Wild

He doesn't like Ocarina of Time because of the waiting you do... yet in Link Between Worlds the waiting is even worse.
in OOT u do a lot of messenger work like the death mtn example
is it fun to go back to the castle (in a huge empty overworld) that u already came from so u could go to death mtn what was the point
to lengthen gametime
this game is long and half of it is for that shit right there(constantly crossing huge hyrule field) sure u have epona but at the 2nd half of the game so 1st half u hav to go through that
it was in attempt to makeit seem big and spacious the problem its empty and that's boring that's why I like link to the past more
I don't hate OOT but the game isn't one I can play on the fly I know its gonna take a lot outta me which is why I barely revisit it
Wayne Ekeh I'm not a Zelda fan at all and all I'd really agree with is OOT is... well overrated is a strong word, but you may get what I mean. It's not a masterpiece imo, it was a tremendously successful transition from 2D to 3D, yes and had a revolutionary game mechanic used later, but the game itself is... it's ok. (Note this is the exact sentiment I feel over FF7)
Link to the Past is just...
By making fun of the Spinner, you have officially provoked a gang war
While a lot of Arin's observations about game design make sense......you just know that if he WASN'T given those specific instructions and locations on the map he'd be going "WHICH WAY DO I GOOOO? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DOOOO?"
i love you.
***** That's bad conveyance. According to HIMSELF. His argument is invalid--one of them, anyway.
Which is exactly why I couldn't get into Skyrim.....
I bet he shit the bed and punched his computer when he torrented LoZ on an NES emulator.
I think Arin made this for the soul purpose of insulting Skyward Sword
