I was born in Texas but my family and ancestors are Hungarians. Hungarian food is best food. My mother is 84 years old now and still makes the best stuffed cabbage and sausage stew with dumplings.

Lee actually edited and uploaded this vlog from Bratislava... that's the thing about being permanently on the road - you're always trying to work with all the raw footage you've spent ages shooting, but then you're moving on to the next place and shooting more footage! We're lucky that Lee is so motivated - I've footage on my hard drive from Kazakhstan 2 years ago that I keep meaning to work on but it still hasn't happened yet... 😁

We've just looked up goulash and discovered that it's prepared different ways around the world. It's good to see real Hungarian goulash though. We're not too picky when it comes to coffee, so 32 cents for vending machine coffee sounds good to us. Lee's pork stew at Ildiko Konyhaja looks very good. :-)

My recommendation, if you want real delicious Hungarian food at a good price I recommend visiting the smaller cities and counties.
Only downside is you might have to learn a little Hungarian 😂

good video. what time of year did you go, i am looking at january for a visit as its very cheap for flights and hostel but it can be cold in january apparantly. i dont mind the cold though and maybe it will be a good time to visit as will probarbly be quieter,
I think it was January. It was a bit nippy but not that bad really. Just wrap up warm and you'll enjoy it. 👍

We made our own budget version... they got quite expensive the more touristy the area but were very tasty! 😃😀😋

my biggest problem with Budapest's restaurants they doesnt make chance to try out the foreigners the real Hungarian foods. They are just make able to get the most hyped dishes. Here in hungary theres 19 county-s and every of them had their own specialities . so a month would not be enough to try out better and better dishes :)
That's such an interesting point and is something we'd never thought of. The Hungarian dishes we do know have been delicious, so it would be fascinating to lesrn of other dishes that no one outside Hungary has heard of. What are some of your recommendations so I can search for them online? ~ Mandy
@@FrugalTravellers "Dödölle" is #1 for sure :) Its one of my favorite . Its from my grandmothers County called ZALA is the west side of Lake Balaton. I also would recommande to chechk out "Túrós Csusza" "Madártej" "Slambuc" . Fish soups are also very traditional here in Hungary its made out of carp, bream. Hungarian name is 'Halészlé" and theres two main type one is from City Szeged the other is from City Baja. I hope i could tell you some ehat you never heard of.

Do most menus have English?
Generally speaking, if a restaurant has an English menu it will probably be more expensive... but there are some good cheap local places.

@@johnrooney507 It certainly is daunting. One of the most difficult European languages. It's good to learn to identify some of the names of the great Hungarian dishes you want to try. We all love gulyás 😋

THE HAT - DID YOU BUY IT FROM RUSSIA ?
I bought it in a second hand market in Tiraspol, Transnistria PMR. It is made in Belarus in the Ushanka factory that supplies the Russian army.

The Great Market Hall is a tourist trap, I got rinsed 8000 HUF there last time, never going back!!!!!!
Oh no - that's terrible!!!!! We could see it is now a huge tourist trap, which is why we didn't buy anything from there.
@@FrugalTravellers I just wanted a sausage, then she kept asking me if I wanted all these extras, and was too polite to decline. Next thing, I knew the whole tray was filled up with stuff, and she tallied it up to over 8000 HUF, I should of asked to take it back, but all I had was an 8000 note, so she just took that. Can't believe I feel for that trick, but I'm not going back anyway, the ground floor isn't so bad though.

@@FrugalTravellers Overall, it wasn't a bad time I had there, third visit actually, but first time I went to the Great Market Hall.
I reccomend the non touristy market hall on rakozci ter also a nice csigna cafe in that square too.
