    As half Dutch/Hungarian I cook Hungarian dishes at least two times a week, from the simple ones to complicated and time consuming ones (the latter mostly in the weekends because good Hungarian cooking is mostly slow cooking). I love every Hungarian dish, even kocsonya, which non of my (Dutch) friends even dare to try (it sounds like vomit in Dutch 😂). I always have homemade savanyúság to go with the dishes, káposzta, uborka, paradicsom, karfiol, retek és vegyes saláta.
    Luckily I can get all my Hungarian food stuff and ingredients from a (web)shop over here in the Netherlands. The owner drives to Hungary every weekend to buy everything, even turó. You have to be quick for turó though, most of the time it’s already sold out on Tuesdays. If anyone reading this would like to try Hungarian cooking, please try to get some real Hungarian paprika (powder), it tastes so much better than the red muck they sell in the supermarkets over here!
    Μy favourite dishes, apart from the ones in the video (I make them all regularly and I really love lecsó, for breakfast, lunch or dinner), so many. But if I have to name a few: csontleves májas gombóccal, hideg cseresznye leves, töltött paprika, rakott krumpli, paprikás krumpli, rántott csirke és Bécsi szelet, turós tészta, májas hurka, Bakonyi szertésszelet, csigány és csángó pecsenye, lángos (az eredeti, ahogy nagymama készítette; nem az, ami pizzává változott), mindféle rétes (nagymama túrós rétese volt a legfinomabb, amit valaha ettem), flódni, vargabéles, beigli … Túl sok, hogy megemlítsem.
    As is the case in most places: I would recommend anyone to have dinner outside of the city centre or touristy places. You get better food most of the time for a lot lower price. One of my favourite restaurants is “A Harapó Mókus” in Óbuda. It’s a bit out of the way (though easily reachable by tram 1, 17, 19 or 41) but I never had better food in Budapest. Downside for tourists is that the menu is in Hungarian only so keep Google translate or DeepL handy.
    To Stuffed Cabbage: love your channel, keep it up!

    My lovely hungarian lady has made several vegetarian versions of some of these, her stuffed cabbage is amazing. I eat fish but hate Carp which is everywhere and often full of bones. Had a woodland mushroom ghoulash in Budapest that was awesome. Being an utter pain in the arse I don't like deep fried food very much either, I'll run from the breaded deep fried cheese but an slowly learning to embrace LANGOS. The buckets of lightly pickled vegetables from the supermarket are my favorite thing and always get a bucket into the suitcase coming home

    I live in Western Europe. The goulash I know is more like a stew and saucy. We eat it with rice and add sweat peas. Don't ask me why. But it's good. Maybe it resembles pörkölt more than it does goulash? Whenever I make it myself, I add lots of smoked paprika powder and a little garlic.

    Nice video! Can you suggest some restaurants where you can find these traditional dishes and maybe accompanied with some folk music? I'm visiting Budapest next week!

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey there! To be honest, when we talk about folk music in restaurants in most cases those will be gypsy bands playing music (which is part of our culture indeed and is nice to listen to). But having a band play usually requires space and is expensive for the restaurants, so perhaps only a few places do this and those will have a higher price tag. There is Kacsa Étterem on Buda side which looks to still have regular Live Music. New York Cafe regularly has Gypsy music being played by a band, but I would only go there for the Architecture and maybe 1 coffee and a cake. This practice of having a band playing in a restaurant is more often found in the countryside these days.

    I visited Budapest on a day trip while I was in Slovakia to visit relatives. I found stuffed cabbage on restaurant menus in Budapest but none in Bratislava, which was surprising to me because stuffed cabbage, or cabbage rolls, was THE family favourite from my Slovakian great grandmother. I wonder why it's less popular there now... It's maybe more of a home food or perhaps more associated with other places and therefore not distinctly Slovakian enough to be on restaurant menus 🤔

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  4 месяца назад

      Perhaps because it's a bit tedious to make, stuffing the leaves then having them simmer for long. Even here, not all restaurants have it on the menu.

      You can say : "Tejföl nélkül kérem szépen" - as in I would like it without Sour cream please. It's not rude at all, maybe a few old school waiters may raise an eyebrow but shouldn't be an issue. There are people who are lactose intolerant who may want to taste a dish but can't have things like sour cream, so it should be accepted 😊

      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  2 месяца назад

      Hey there! As a local my knowledge about Hotels is limited since I do not stay at any of them (hopefully one day some of them may invite us for a stay 😅). There are however Facebook groups like "Budapest Holiday, Hotel and Travel Tips for Tourists" and "Things to do in Budapest" where many visitors share their experiences and hotels they stayed at, and many are also asking for recommendations. Perhaps a post in those groups could help with getting some ideas 😊

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  6 дней назад

      Hey there! Most of the traditional food has an element of meat... we even have a pasta that is mixed with curd and we still put bacon into that 😅 There is a place called Vegan Garden restaurant in the city center, they have some of the traditional dishes made vegan style, the Forest Mushroom Paprikash is one of my favorite dishes that doesnt have meat :) They also have a version of Ghoulash that is Vegan. Other than this, I hear a lot of people praise the "Happy Cow" app, which helps with finding vegan, vegetarian and gluten/lactose free places. You should be fine with trying Lángos or Chimney cake, those are considered vegetarian (although there can be meat toppings for Lángos, but just don't order those :))

    I am surprised to hear that in Hungary people eat so much less fish than other countries. Why do you think that is? Is it because fish is expensive? Or just not popular?

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  4 месяца назад +1

      That's an interesting question. While there isn't really a definitive answer with a source, based on some studies and my personal opinion it's because of 2 things : Hungary as a landlocked country needs to import most of the sea based fish which increases the price. On the other side the freshwater fish we have like carp has a lot of fish bone which makes the preparation more difficult and eating them is also a bit more of a hassle. We Hungarians eat a bunch of bread with Carp so that the fish bone we miss can go down easier 😊

    Hello Sir,
    If you don't mind,, I'm visiting Budapest next month and if you can recommend a trusted money exchange office (( no commission )) or (( hidden commission)) I will be so thankful for you 🙏

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  4 месяца назад

      Hi there! Most exchange in the offices in the city center will be fine. Just don't exchange at the airport, the rates there are usually the worst. If you walk around at Deák Ferenc tér (Budapest Centrum), look at the exchange offices on the streets, check their rates and decide which one you like most. The difference in rates won't be very high, there may be a few outstanding ones with super high and bad rates but not many. I never really had problems with Exclusive Change, Interchange or Western Union Change offices which are franchises. On a side note, almost all places accept cards these days :)

    Gulyás is not equal to Goulash.
    Goulash is Pörkölt.

    • @StuffedCabbageAdventures
      @StuffedCabbageAdventures  4 месяца назад

      Indeed Goulash is different most of the time abroad, especially if you look at what is served as Goulash in Prague for example. But if someone goes to a Hungarian restaurant here and looks at an English menu, they will see it listed as Goulash, sometimes as Goulash Soup. :) Wikipedia also mentions Goulash as "Soup or Stew."

      There are some restaurants in Budapest which offer gluten-free, lactose-free or completely vegan versions of some of these dishes. One we've been to was Kata Restaurant which was nice, but a lot of people recommend the Happy Cow app to look for places which may suit these specific needs :)
