    At least the font can be easily replaced with snes-ff6-font. The game's look and feel is much better with this font for sure.

      Although the name may feel a little off, but after have tried a few different fonts, I think the best one would be Dragon Quest XI's font.
      FF6's font is nolstagia, and I love it. However I want to help spreading the awareness of a better one (though I may not be 100% correct because it's still a perception), but if you try DQXI's, you'd see that its aesthic is most suitable to play on PC screen. ;)

    I have been very skeptical about the whole "Pixel Remaster" series, but actually I think it has turned out rather well. I'm still not sure if the graphical changes are 100% an improvement, but for the most part, they look good. And the new soundtrack is phenomenal!
    I think it was a big mistake to remove the optional dungeons and endgame party-swap that that GBA version (and beyond) came up with, though.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  3 года назад +7

      Pretty much agree with you! I had low expectations for the Pixel Remasters after I heard they wouldn't incorporate changes made to the previous remakes, but I was very pleasantly surprised, especially by the NES trilogy. Losing the bonus content is a shame, but not a big deal for me personally as I tend not to do that content anyway... 😅

    • @hendrycksputt7165
      @hendrycksputt7165 3 года назад +5

      The last bit about GBA content is my biggest problem. I already own GBA versions and don't believe paying more for less is a smart business strategy, unless they are added in via update(But it's more likely to be paid DLC.)

    • @kyokonull
      @kyokonull 3 года назад +1

      seeing that they removed endgame content here makes me worried for final fantasy v's gba jobs and bonus dungeon, though they already remade final fantasy v (poorly) with the endgame content so they're probably more aware of not forgetting that than the endgame ffiv content

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  3 года назад +2

      @@kyokonull Unfortunately, it's pretty much guaranteed that those features will NOT be in the FF5 Pixel Remaster. None of the Pixel Remasters contain any features that weren't in the original games (except for quality of life stuff and UI functions).
      It's not an issue for me (the original versions of FF5 and FF6 have everything I need, I don't really care about bonus stuff) but I feel bad for the people who enjoy those additions!

    I’d like to see an Octopath Traveler style version of Final Fantasy I-VI. For Final Fantasy IV, it would be based on the PSP version, with the same monster sprites, but the character sprites made from scratch. If Square Enix is going to do a full Unreal Engine 3D version, they should retain the turn-based combat.

      @@Altercate It's definitely quite fun! I dressed up in Rydia Cosplay when the Pixel Remaster came out day 1 and went through the game start to finish Rydia only. I will say that the grinding is much less tedious in the Pixel Remaster vs. the OG Super Famicom version which I also did a Rydia Cosplay Marathon of on FF4's 30th Anniversary, July 19th, 2021. I don't think many guys do this LOL :)
      It would be a lot more difficult if Rydia had to do Magnetic Cave and Zot since Valvalis is very tough to beat and Dark Elf has a ton of magic resistance. However, my challenge just involved Kaipo-Fabul and Golbez-Zeromus (where you get Rydia normally in the game). The first real grind comes right before Dr. Lugae, and the second one is right before Rubicante. It took 18.5 hours to do on Pixel Remaster vs. OG Super Famicom 24 hours in both marathons.

    Call me a cynic or tinfoilhat, but I really think that SE is going to do another remaster of all of these using the Octopath Traveler Engine if the Dragon Quest 3 remake sells well. I just can't see any other reason for them to release these supposed "Definitive Remasters" that lack all the improvements and additions that the previous remasters had added. I can see them in like 3 years going: "Now, THIS is the Definitive Edition. HD-2D, all content included!" and maybe even some other small additions. Like, if they truly meant to make these the definitive versions, then they would be that, the definitive versions. They wouldn't lack anything and probably would even include new stuff.

    I don't know why all the reviewers expected the pixel remasters were going to include all the added content from other releases.
    Square-enix was upfront about these being the definitive versions of the ORIGINAL versions of the games.
    Anyone that expected the extra content wasn't paying attention, or chose not to pay attention.
    Also, why are QoL improvements criticized?
    You can turn off the mini map, and I would argue that the detail on the maps is to help with collecting everything.
    I feel that the pixel remasters are obscenely over priced individually, with the bundle being just tolerable in price.
    Also, the reworked font on consoles is excellent, I believe it is being added to the steam/mobile versions.
    The option for the CRT filter is pretty cool too. I didn't use it, but it has a charm to it, for sure.
    I LOVE the FF4 complete collection on psp, but I would say that the pixel remaster IS the definitive version of the original FFIV.
    Edit)
    Can't believe I forgot to mention it, but the water effects are fucking gorgeous!

    The first final fantasy game that I was to ever beat was FFIV on the DS. Though I much prefer the 2D one since it isn’t as difficult or as grindy as the DS one.
    I like how the game isn’t really that long as almost every time I beat it usually takes me 20 Hours. It’s the only FF game to have up to 5 characters in battle, It has a great blend between medieval fantasy and futuristic sci-fi.
    And Cecil still remains among my favorite FF protagonist. And a game that I still think holds up today 30 years later.

    Great analysis. The one thing you didn't mention that I was hoping you would is whether this was a port of ff4 hard type or easy type. I'm guessing easy since you never mentioned difficulty but would still be a nice tip bit to include.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! And you make a good point. To the best of my knowledge, this is a port of the original Japanese version, but the main difference is that you level twice as fast in the Pixel Remaster. So I would say that technically the game is "hard type" but it's significantly easier because you're always a little stronger than you would be in the original. Hope that helps!

    • @jesseherman5540
      @jesseherman5540 3 года назад +1

      Interesting. If it is indeed hard type with accelerated xp gain then the difficulty may still show itself in the end game. I finished the psx release (which was hard type) and zeromus only used big bang which always one shot edge and rydia despite them being level 95. I wish they would have just gave an option at the beginning to pick between easy and hard. That way people could play easy if they just wanted to experience the characters and story. Or experiment with the battle system. While others could play hard to experience 4's greater emphasis on strategy to get through the game.

The story isn't exactly the best in the series but it's still good, it really focuses more on the characters (you more or less use the same party throughout the whole game). I'd say the highlights are the job/combat system and the soundtrack. In the Advance port and subsequent ports, there were a few extras added including a bonus dungeon which does have a little bit of extra lore. I really hope they somehow add the extra content to these remasters because they would basically be the definitive versions

I utterly HATE they did that to FF4 3D remake. The old game as pointed out had like the needle shot punishment shown, it was hard but fair. But in the 3D game if you don't attack with X character(s) using Y (specific action) the entire group will hit the party with a blow so overcharged if the first hit doesn't kill it'll cripple ending battle. And worse it's not just bosses, but random standard dungeon monsters too ending up with a heap of cheap deaths until you can manage what to use when to use and if the ATB will still trigger it right. The pixel remaster is the way to go to get the right experience, not a punch below the belt.

      I asked because the 3D Remake is considerably harder than other versions of the game, so it's a good option for people who are looking for a challenge! That said, I prefer the original version and the Pixel Remaster. I just love the way they look. 😀
