For Final Fantasys 1-6, you can even change the music via mods, like 1-2 gets the ps1/psp music, and 3-4 get their DS remake music, or get the OG versions.
The games are literally perfect now. On console Fixed fonts PR fixed all bugs like insane crystal tower This bundle should itself be rated as one of the best game(s) ever created Perfection.
As a modder for the Pixel Remasters, there's also plenty of mods for the PC versions to be found. If you want the classic character sprites, for example, because the new ones seem a bit too unshaded and bright, or the FF5 and 6 overworlds are way too bright and clash with the new town and dungeon tileset improvements, we've got mods for that. These games are made on the Unity engine, so they're a lot easier to mess with than the old iso and rom files of before.
I have a lot of respect for the modding community that continues to help modern remakes more accessible while simultaneously showing tribute to the original games. That respect, however, doesn't carry over to SE in many places (though some things were improved). If fans are the ones spending their own energy to be the labor of love that's indicative of the original titles, if they're the ones truly turning the PR projects into something I would want to play--then why would someone praise SE for having their work corrected? Again, because I see the angry comments forming already, I'm not saying the PR games are the worst thing I've ever seen. I'm saying that the fans are doing a better job at creating a lasting experience than the companies getting paid to do what these modders end up having to do for us.
Does there exist a mod that makes Dancing Mad work like on the SNES? That is, making the music only change tiers at a specific point in the loop, rather than when you beat the previous tier.
The other cool thing about the opera scene is that it's voiced NOT JUST in English in Japanese, but in EVERY LANGUAGE THE GAME IS IN! I was playing in Spanish and the whole opera is voiced in Spanish too! That was so cool! I guess in the English version, she didn't sound like an opera singer, and that was *intentional* because Celes would NOT have been an opera singer, but just someone who can maybe sing.
I do not understand this reasoning at all. I do not know a single opera or musical where the characters are supposed to be professional singers. The whole point is that we are supposed to enjoy the music, so only the best singers actually get casted. It shouldn't be any different for this scene.
@@gubruikertje They mean that in the context of the game, Celes, the character who sings in the opera, is not a singer. She was infiltrated as a singer, in order to protect the actual proffesional singer who was being targeted by someone. It's not the character of the opera that's not a singer, but the actual performer isn't a singer herself.
@@Zaleos Well I suppose that makes sense but isn't she supposed to successfully impersonate a singer? We aren't assuming everyone is tone deaf in universe are we? Besides, the scene was always very famous even in 16bit, so why make it look so much better while not making the singing as good as possible?
@@gubruikertje That much I wouldn't know. I guess for artistic and enjoyment purposes it'd make sense if it sounds as good as possible. I haven't played this version yet so no idea how it sounds myself. Personally I wont mind much either way, I'll still love the game anyway xD
@@gubruikertje She didn't take her place because she sounds like the opera singer. She took her place because she LOOKS like the opera singer. Setzer wasn't going to be in the audience so he wouldn't be able to hear her sing which is why she didn't need to have the best voice. You can actually fail that scene, the impres.... whatever he was called, gets mad and tells you "you have x more chances". I think this alludes to everyone in the audience knowing it's fake, like special viewings designed to draw Setzer out to kidnap Celes. You have only so much time of keeping it "shut down" before they have to reopen. Lore wise, it's a good choice and makes sense. She is a General, not some Opera Floozy. She needs only learn the part to keep the Opera going long enough for Setzer to kidnap her instead of the actual Opera Singer.
I'm glad they listened to feedback on the animation for suplexing the train. Having it continue to chase you down with no loss of speed even after being dropped on its back always made me smile, gave the game a little more charm. Which, when it comes to making a game catering heavily to nostalgia, it's so important to get those little touches right.
V and VI's sprites look much better than the previous mobile releases, and I/II/IV return to the iconic pixels after the PSP chibified them differently. I think this is even the first remake that keeps the changed proportions in FFI's promoted classes.
@@browncoatkevin there's mod for PSP style sprites for FFV and countless edits for original 6, including Brave Steel with FFBE style sprites that look so much better than anything else, people should mod pixel remaster to allow for actually good sprites but no.
Jared the reason that 6 is harder is probably because you have the battle speed turned up which disproportionately affects enemy attack speeds, buff durations and dot ticks without having an effect on your own characters atb meters
@@menthols4625 ironically now it's fixed as in many older ports of 2D FF games (including up to GBA versions) the speed only effects the enemies and not the player.
I like playing at max speed still cuz aw nice more speed and also the remasters are all a bit too generous with gil and exp so the extra difficulty is fun
Actually i heard that the pixel remasters fix this so the battle speed affects everything but animations, so it kinda makes the game harder like aways because of status effect and enemies having more time to attack, but not so much as it did before where it only affected enemy attack speeds.
My biggest nitpick for VI is how they took away the opening credits. I like how it feels like a film in the original. Otherwise I'm having great fun with all of them, they did a good job.
@Orange Guy Compare the first Zelda with the 3D games. One lets you start right away, the others "wanna tell a story" and it takes ages till the game goes on.
@@keen7youtubeistoast796 So we meet again Keen and by the looks of it, you haven't learned to respect other's opinions. So you think that games shouldn't tell a story. Well, people can and will disagree with you on that aspect and you must learn to respect that and move on.
@@keen7youtubeistoast796 in the case of role-playing games which includes Zelda, you SHOULD immerse yourself in the story or else the game isn’t going to be as much fun as it could be or you’ll just get bored.
@@Ahappysandwich i wanna say they were trying to give an experience as close and true to the original as possible, but better, like fixing bugs and improving gameplay beyond the old consoles' limitations. And/or they are saving them for one more dlc pack to add to the games, with possibly more on top. But that's just my guesses.
Song list (all songs composed by Nobuo Uematsu): 1. 1:30 Battle Scene - Final Fantasy I 2. 2:41 Ahead on Our Way (Main Theme) - Final Fantasy V 3. 3:54 Into the Darkness (Dungeon Theme) - Final Fantasy IV 4. 4:31 - Terra's Theme (Main Theme) - Final Fantasy VI 5. 6:05 Celes Theme - Final Fantasy VI 6. 6:40 Battle With The Four Fiends - Final Fantasy IV 7. 9:58 Town Theme - Final Fantasy I 8. 14:00 Main Theme - Final Fantasy I (and all of them lmao) I'm always frustrated when I hear cool music on a video with no indication of what it is on the description or the comments, so this is my way of giving it back.
my biggest complaint for the remasters is taking out previous bonus stuff, like new bosses's dungeons etc. So say you wanted the extra stuff from FF1's dawn of souls you are out of luck. Also taking away other versions even if they were inferior is a low blow
@@jackimus8987 No? The Dragon's Den is actually amazing, with the Dragons getting new gimmicks that make them a lot of fun. Kaiser Dragon is also a very fun fight. Soul Shrine was kind of meh though. FF 1 and 2 also got some pretty good extra content.
FFV suffers the most from the battle screen layout, as it removes the feel of Neo Exdeath in the final battle rushing after you in a big chase scene, caue he's too far away from you (plus it removes the illusion of him being a long tower of horribleness). Not a deal breaker, but certainly a gripe.
Plus they fixed some bugs and glitches which make the GBA version able to try more party combinations amd boss exploits for that classic FJF playthrough.
The layout biggering really gets to me more than it should, it cheapens the scale of the fights and makes larger than life threats look like worms. Also for some reason some character sprites (like cid and yang) are objectively less detailed than their snes counterpart probably because of this.
I'm shocked there was no mention of the removal of the Peninsula of Power Leveling. Sure, it's not necessary to beat the game, but considering it was so iconic in helping with the intense difficulty curve of the original, I was hoping you'd at least address the removal of it.
@@sirmanguydude2383 Yeah, but...the peninsula of power always felt different. Like Nathan said, it was included in every other re-release of FF1, because it was so memorable. So it not being here just feels wrong
The PSP/GBA ports of FFII have the Dawn of Souls epilogue which is honestly the coolest part of FFII. It's not in the Famicom or Pixel Remaster versions.
Im surprised you haven't mentioned the difficulty changes. I played 1, 2 ,3 and im in the middle of 4 right now. And almost all of these versions seem to lower the amount of grinding and overall difficulty significantly. Its overall a good change but it has been making the difficulty trivial for me, I would have loved some kind of option to tune the exp/gold gain.
Yet for FF3 a lv 99 party NOT in the Onion Knight class can STILL lose if the final boss USES PARTICAL beam EVERY turn and you can NOT out heal its damage. FF2 still uses its crappy stat system one I hated so much that when not IF the 6 PR versions get a PS4/PS5/Switch ports I won't be playing that one just the other 5. FF6 removed Vanish/doom/Rhodox (Mu Rage) so intangirs are no longer worth fighting even my lv 40 FF6 party does CRAP for damage against those.
@@jonny_codphilo7809 This is my first time experiencing most of these games, even then I could pretty quickly figure out that there is something wrong with the scaling. Yes I know more about weakness exploiting nowadays but that doesn't even matter. I only needed to grind 1 time, and that was for the final boss of FF 3. For the rest all games you can just ask your units to auto battle for 95 % of the battles in all of these games. Especially while playing FF 1 I felt something was wrong, I would sequence break a lot of battles because I could just run wherever I wanted to. The reviews on steam also mention the lack of difficulty a lot so I am at this point just going to assume that my experience is right in this.
If they do, they are going to HAVE to address the font thing. Mods won't save them this time. And, really, it should be an easy fix, it's astounding they haven't already.
They all are much easier than the originals. I think Square should have added an option to be able to pick a way to pick also the same difficulty they originally had. Apart from that, they are very cool.
I really don't like how the new character sprites look. I feel like making the colors brighter and using smoother gradients was the wrong direction to go when upgrading these sprites. I wish 6's sprites would've stayed the same and the other games should've been adjusted to be more in line with how 6 looks, as I feel that game has peek snes spritework.
And the best about in pc is that you can mod most of these stuff. There’re mods of the color palette, sprites, fonts, UI, music, difficulty. The only thing missing now it’s the randomizer.
@@TShadowStalker It's not really that subjective. As addressed in the video, the character sprites don't match everything else in terms of color palette, texture, and rendering style.
Yes! The PSP versions of I, II, and IV are so much better than every other one (unless you like the 3D and voice acting of the DS remake for IV the most). I'd wager Square could have even done PSP remakes for other games during that time like Chrono Trigger or something.
I get why they did it but I'm still very disappointed they didn't do an HD2D remake of 6. Hopefully they're doing that with Chrono Trigger because that's the only thing that makes sense for why they ported Cross to modern consoles and not Trigger
I grew up playing FFVI through GBA and I loved everything (the music included). It hurts to think that it does not really compare to other versions, but hey! At least I know now what versions to try (most likely the pixel remastered).
Romhacking has the graphics restoration patch and sound restoration patch that fix everything Jared mentioned in this video, and you can buy a repro cart that comes with both patches pre-installed if messing around with emulation or flash carts is too much hassle. That's easily the best version of the game.
I'm surprised you're so dismissive of the text issue. Menus are huge part of this series and we've seen with games like Persona 5 that a quality UI can take a turn based RPG to the next level. Here I really feel like they detract from the experience which is literally advertised as a graphical remaster. Great to hear mods are available but I wouldn't say it's hyperbolic to have an issue with the presentation of something so central to the games feeling.
This is a nice rundown, but I'm kinda surprised there's no mention of the bugs, which vary in severity. I only watched Jared and Yunalesca play VI, but there's that bug where the enemies stop doing anything when all your characters are frozen. There was that one where Setzer stands in the same spot as other party members when you re-recruit him. I saw a couple videos about one where if you exit Albrook through a certain tile in the World of Ruin, you end up back in the World of Balance with no way to progress or fix the game, which was unfortunate for this guy who saved without realizing what had happened. They should have fixed these before releasing the game.
They fixed the bigger ones but still need to patch some in-battle softlocks. I've had one today when a Destroyer rhino in the magitek factory used Reraise on itself (in the original it can't because it doesn't have enough MP, but they gave it enough in this new version) and revived as an invisible and untargettable monster. The battle stopped progressing at that time so I couldn't even run or get a game over by killing my own team, I had to kill the FF6.exe process.
I had a bug where you are supposed to follow Locke after meeting Kefka for the first time, and he went to the wrong room, started to go down a staircase and went back up it and vanished. I think he was supposed to go to the other side of the castle where the bedroom is but instead he went to the library and bugged out.
I have a few problems with the pixel remasters. Most of which I could forgive. -Changing the difficulty and giving no option to have the original difficulty (a bit strange for something claiming to be the original experience. For example the experience and gold values in FF1 are not even close to original) -the text (at least that's easy to fix, and honestly not a huge deal to begin with.) -I have mixed feelings about the brightened sprite remakes, especially in FF6 I feel like it robs some of the atmosphere of the game. -But the one which I absolutely can't forgive and why I would struggle to play these over the original is the judder/microsutter, it drives me crazy. I know it's not uncommon in modern games, but the old versions are buttery smooth.
Yeah, Jared mentioned neither the lackof smoothness when you move around, nor the bugs that still plague some of them to this day. They managed to create more annoying bugs in FF6 (mainly sotftlocks) than the original had, and the original was a buggy mess.
Thanks to these remasters I've finally beaten the first three games in the series this month, and have just started on IV. Call me spoiled by modern gaming conveniences (maps, quick-saves, etc.), but I honestly don't think I would ever have stuck with any of these three games in their original versions.
Love the pixel remasters. They’re my new go-to versions of all 6 games. Did have to use a mod that fixed 4’s exp gain requirements, though. They totally nerfed 4 in particular, for whatever reason. The game was already easy enough without the exp change. One of my favorite things about these versions is the ease of modding. I can make tweaks and touch up things here and there to make these games just about perfect.
The main problem with the text isnt how plain it is, its how small and thin it is. It becomes unreadable on a TV especially for people with eyesight problems. they couldve at least had another text option in game considering the proper font is in the game files (you change the japanese font filename to EN and it fixes it on pc)
If you have an issue with the text on PC, it is 90% of the time the resolution mixed with aspect ratio. Like you plugging an n64 to a 60”, it becomes all whacky. I lowered my resolution on my Pc and even on a project or TV it’s perfect! I suggest 1080 though. Anything higher seems overkill for pixelated game and it’ll cause the font and other aspects to shrinj
On Steam, there is/was an alternative to the Final Fantasy VI Pixel remaster, the Old Mobile Version port, which was delisted, when the pixel remasters came out. Some may yell, "Noooooo!" but with the mod pack that's currently out, it can go toe to toe with the pixel remaster, to the point where I'm undecided which one to play.
the old mobile version was cosndiered the WORST version. People think the pixel remasters style clashes? the mobile port clashes HARDER and more blatantly.
@@sarafontanini7051 At least that one was trying its own style and had a readable font, the Pixel Remaster just takes the SNES style and makes it worse
this was my main issues with the pixel remasters, if you like them there is nothing wrong with that but the people prefer the old ios versions get screwed
Hi there. According to YT, it is now 1 year after this Video. No physical release, but digital. At Least on Playstation. And I gotta admit, it was my first time playing all of those games. It is incredible how FF 6 holds up, it even is the new number 1 game for me, right before Chrono Trigger. third would be Sea of Stars. Thanks for the video man, nice to hear that the Pixel Remasters are good remasters
wow, that FF6 opera scene with the 3D castle is that first ive seen of a game having the original(or remake) sprite palette applied to a low poly 3D model. ive only ever seen some fan animations of that particular type of style in use. edit: WAIT, THESE STILL ARENT ON ANY FUCKING CONSOLE!? HEH!?
I'm 100% on board with bringing them to console. I'm going to wait until they do too because I just want to experience them on a TV as they should over a phone
The best version for Final Fantasy 2 ist NOT the pixel remaster since it's missing the whole afterlife part which was included in the GBA game. It's not just an additional dungeon but more like a whole DLC with new playable characters, new story elements and a new final boss.
The new text is entirely what sold me on these remakes. I play on PC but on a large screen TV. I often have trouble reading text in even modern games. These remakes text is so crisp and readable I can read it easily from across the room on a 75 inch TV. Perfection.
No matter the console, I just want it to be on the Switch most of all. At this moment, that console is portable and fun to take anywhere. Add in the fact that it also has 7, 8, 9, X, X-2, and 12, it would be the first time that we have all the classics on one system (Barring XIII and XV since those are more modern games, while the MMOs don't really count either)
Not to mention the first 6 we’re on Nintendo consoles to start with. It would bring it full circle. And it would be so nice to have the full collection in one place, preferably physical so I can have them for years to go back to.
the sprites could be better but I am fine with their new choice, but what I do really dislike is the font type (I know there's mods but this would be a deal breaker if they release the pixel remasters to consoles) and the huge empty space on the battlefield. On the bright side the music is worth owning the games alone, they really nailed with that aspect.
Jared, I beg of you, PLEASE give the Old Version another shot with Atma Weapon. There was just a mod released to make it have Brave Exvius sprites, and plays SMOOTHER than the Pixel Remasters (I can get stable 60 on Old, PR keeps stuttering around 30-40). It has all the content of the GBA version, and if you're already jumping in on mods, you might as well.
One nit-pick I have with the FF6 pixel remaster is how they removed the text bar customizations (goodby demon chocobo) and also the ability to order your magic by type. I know this is a small nit-pick, but why would they remove those?
The music for ALL of them was brilliantly done. I was blown away with how good it was with every town, every boss fight, every character theme. A masterpiece, each of them. Look forward to playing them again soon.
The pixel remasters of Final Fantasy were great. But I loved 6 the best, it was a delight to see you play it on Twitch since I watched the original version of 6 vods on RUclips and Twitch in 2020. I laughed and cried with you and the Jerd Herd through out the whole thing. It was a great experience for me and I’ll never forget it as long as I live. ♥️👏👍🤗😭🤧
I played these games decades ago. Why would I play them again with nothing different. I could care less about better pixels and music. In fact the games are even easier than before.
Did he seriously not mention the jittery scrollings and the tons of bugs and glitches/softlocks, especially on FF6? And don't tell me "I'm honest because I didn't experience any of this" since anyone can see in this video that the games aren't smooth. I liked you awhile back ProJared but you're acting way too much like a square-enix employee these days. There ARE more problems than just "they're not on consoles, durr". The last patch for FF6 was more than 10 days ago and I experienced another softlock today (they gave sufficient MP to the Destroyer rhino monster in the Magitek Factory so his Reraise works, but when it revived it was invisible and the battle stopped progressing). And it's just one of the many examples of new bugs they created with this version.
I'm amazed that people are complaining about the font when the sprites look like garbage against the backgrounds. Consistency is key, and these 'remasters' have *_NONE_* of that.
The biggest issue I have is they left out the GBA bonuses. Extra dungeons, extra jobs (FF5), and extra magicite (FF6). Which a lot of people theorize it's so they can nickel and dime us with DLC later on. Which I would be surprised if modern Squeenix *DIDN'T* do.
I just found out about this. Was disappointed. I purchased the bundle and am playing them back to back starting with 1. My favorite so far is FF5 and to hear that I won’t be able to have four jobs was a little upsetting.
You know. I kinda wanna see Square go through all these pixel remasters, and upgrade them even further with HD-2D. Give them the same treatment as Live A Live.
You know, it's kind of funny that you mention how good these games look, when I actually thought otherwise. Perhaps it's just me being a pixel art snob, but all of the character sprites look almost amateurish to me, which is odd because, as you mentioned, the environment and enemy spritework is, for the most part, pretty solid. It's just the characters, which are what you're going to be looking at and dealing with for the entire duration of the game, that are off. Seems to me that the contrast isn't high enough, resulting in a flat, almost muddied look, despite there being more shades used than in the originals. I guess it all boils down to personal preference in the end, and the character sprites that we got aren't necessarily *bad* per se, it just seems like such a baffling difference when you compare it to a lot of the enemy sprites, which very clearly have higher contrast in their color palettes and look so much better because of it.
I'd say a lot of the flaws of the character sprites are less subjective than objective. If I ignore my plethora of nitpicks against them, I'd still consider them pretty bad for the reasons you've mentioned. The oversaturation and brightness of every color either gives nothing space to itself aside from the dark outline that contrasts far too much. It all just ends up feeling like a mess of colors lazily implying the vaguest possible idea of what the sprite is meant to be. This issue becomes worse on characters with a lot of colors. So much visual noise is bound to give someone a headache after a play session. Not every character sprite is that bad. In fact there are some of them that are actually really good, but I have to go out of my way to search for them to confidently say they exist.
The PSP versions of FF 1-4 look absolutely amazing on PPSSPP at 8x internal resolution. So that's my fav ways to play those games in particular. I'm glad that the pixel remasters offer great ways to play these games now.
@@MrDurant123 For FF 1 and FF4 the PSP versions for sure. Everything else the pixel remaster for sure. But you won't go wrong with the pixel remaster versions of 1 and 4. The PSP version of FF3 is also one of the best ways to play the 3D version of the game. Like FF4, the 3D version of FF3 is just as relevant as the 2D version, you'll want to play both versions. FF3's 2D version is the pixel remaster, although heavily based on the NES game so it's a lot different from the 3D version. So FF3 and FF4 both have two games to play. If you wanted to go entirely with the pixel remaster for all FF games 1-6, you won't really have any regrets, they're generally good. You can even add some mods to make it a bit better for yourself.
They actually fixed the text, letting you use a much better pixel font, alongside putting it on console, the full bundle being 75 is a bit high, hell even $70 sound high, but you can buy each game individually, the nes trio being $12 and the snes trio being $18.
It's tempting to play FF6 just for the change to Cyan's bushido system, and I'd love to know more specifics on how they changed or improved classes in FF3.
I don't think 3's classes are improved, it's just there's no longer any limiter on switching Jobs. The NES game had a currency you spent on switching, the 3D game gave a job sickness period whenever you switched that varied in length depending on the type of job, this version has neither of those so you can switch as much as you want with no penalty. In my eyes, this is the *only* objective improvement these remasters have on the gameplay side. Maybe the mini-map and diagonal movement too, but just for fighting.
Funnily enough, he actually got that detail wrong, Cyan's Skills were changed to work like that in the previous Mobile Version already and the Remaster just carried that over. As for FF3 Classes, off-hand I know they gave Dark Knight Bladeblitz (a free AoE Attack Command), gave Rangers Barrage, and rebalanced some Class Stats, for example Red Mages now have better physical Stats.
PIty about losing the extra dungeon and espers in FF VI, I really liked collecting everyone's ultimate weapons even though they were just cherries on top when Genji Glove x Master Scroll, Quick, Dualcast Ultima, etc. exist, and it's not like they add story or anything. Gotta pour one out for loss of old Gilgamesh, though, we'll miss you Greg. ;w;
Yeah. I don’t care about losing the other games’ bonus content but I was disappointed to lose 6’s bonus stuff. The Dragons Den was a great addition to the game and added more to the World of Ruin.
@@sammyshehole It was entirely recycled maps, and most of the new ultimate weapons were actually worse than existing items. The boss fights in it were the only thing worth a damn.
I definitely noticed the remaster of VI is more difficult. I think it's that enemies use their special abilities more consistently. I got hammered around a few times, then did a lot of grinding to make it more survivable. But I'm playing it very differently than normal. Like, I'm actually buying potions and using them.
The pixel artwork is magnificent. Got the entire bundle on my iPad Pro now -- an excellent way to play it with the quality screen. Kind of an odd omission to not include controller support though, when most of the other mobile games were among the first iPad games to support controllers. Not a deal breaker though, as it's final fantasy -- point and click or the virtual thumbstick works fine.
It took over a year to finally release the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters Collection on PS4 and Switch releasing on April 19th. Whatever at least it's getting released for console players but Xbox players pretty much get nothing for some reason.
You know when you mention the difficulty I thought it was just me, I find the enemy attacks far more frequently(Kefka during Narshe battle would attack me 3-4 times before my party even que up their attacks, died twice here) than normal in FF6, and yes I died a few time too. I felt setting the battle speed in game to the slowest helped a bit. Idk it may just be me...really should read patch notes lol.
Thanks to you I purchased the FFVI Pixel version and am Loving It!! I especially loved the Opera part where Celes actually sings!.. and the other 2 guys do too. That area is way better visually too. The game has great music and special effects. At the floating island currently. Thanks for the reviews.🤓
Was wondering if you'd tackle this. My favorite of 'em was easily III though. I like the rest just fine but it really felt like III got that golden touch up and took the best parts of the original and the 3D remakes, making it the "perfect" version. I think only II suffers from the removed extra stuff of other ports.
Yeah, I'll stick with the 3D remakes of III and IV. I prefer more expressive character models and voice acting, and I wish V and VI had been remade in that style on the 3DS. Oh well, I'll go with the pixel remasters for those two.
I just finished all 6. It was nice since I never beat 2,3, and 5 before. They were good but should have left out 6. It deserves more of a stand alone remake.
Yeah, I think 2 is way too overly hated. It’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. My only real gripe about 2 is some of the dungeons can be confusing to traverse and can feel like they go on too long. But that’s about it.
X3 I played 2 (the PR version) solely because I'd hear some folks say it doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Then I beat it, and now have a deep deep fucking burning hot hate for it. There's cool stuff in it, and I'm glad I played it, but I also never wanna touch it again. The dungeons suck and I would almost dread getting new spells cuz it meant having to grind my brains out again.
@@sammyshehole Also, inconsistent difficulty where you are either horribly weak or horribly overpowered. Really repetitive music. Forgettable characters and story. Nah, 2 deserves the flak it gets and i'm not surprised Square Enix never attempted most of what it tried ever again in the main series.
@@okagron Horrible characters and story? Compared to both 1 and 3, 2 was Shakespeare. 😂 I mean, at least it HAD characters and story. 1 certainly didn’t. 3 wasn’t much above 1 in that regard, either.
@@koladearasanmi2005 and it looks like it's back to a fantasy setting. Though considering I really didn't like 13 or 15 I'm not getting my hopes up of it being amazing.
I'd love to see a continuation of the 8 to 16 bit series kinda like Mega Man 9 and 10. They did a few things like that but they weren't really satisfying to me. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years was so boring. It felt like they forgot to include the actual game part in their game.
My only gripe with VI is that the sprites are too colorful, every previous FF had that style so it's fine for them, but the SNES sprites had a darker and detailed palette, and the remaster should reflect that.
the fact that he called it muddy shows how he really feels. he should delete his entire account, its all worthless now. can never take him seriously anymore.
Yeah I personally really enjoy having postgame content. FFIV in particular had a ton of post game content in the gba/psp/ds versions, none of which are included in these. Like I spent all game gearing and leveling give me fun things to do with all that
I want the Pixel Remasters to get the extra stuff added. The one thing I disagree with is the graphics of the Pixel Remasters, especially FF1-3. I feel like the character and enemy pixel density should've been increased.
It looks cool, but the lack of the extra content is kind of a no-go for me; while the QOL improvements seem awesome, that extra content in the GBA and PSP versions, in my opinion, improved the overall experiences for these games... I can't believe they didn't keep them for these remasters and make these the ultimate versions
@@landmine36 Now makes me question why not just make them a part of the game instead of leaving it unused. And people like to bring up the fact that they were trying to be a faithful as possible to originals and say the extra content wouldn't fit, but then claim that that content hardly matters and it's just "stuff" when comparing versions.
@@zeroskaterz92 oh man you're a bundle of fun aintcha, extra content is more time to play a game you enjoy with some requiring new strategies beyond Mash A and win, if they are that awful to you, you probably didn't enjoy playing the games that much. since they were out of the way, they took nothing away from the core game itself, while adding more for those who actually wanted more.
Hey Jared, just wanted to share one thing that you might have missed. When i was playing FF6 (which is also my favourite game)... I'll try to avoid describing without spoiling it outright but, when you reach that important scene with celes on the island in the second half of the game... they forgot to turn off the mini-map... you can see the rest of the world while you are in that small island... Yeaaaah... they really fucked that up, it essentially ruins that whole scene because you already know the outcome. Maybe it's fixed, but i've been reading the patch notes and i've seen nothing about it. Because of that i would definitely not recommend the pixel remaster for first time players. The "instant text" that these pixel remaster have also bugs out some kefka lines in the floating continent (when he gets stabbed).
My only complaint left after they fixed the text is no ability to edit the UI, changing the colours like in FF6 originally but at least they recolored the menus to be a bit darker for FF6.
I absolutely loved the remasters! I played through all 6 and even got every achievement on Steam. The only things I modded were the font, hiding the auto-battle icon when not in use, and hiding the minimap my default. That's all I needed and I was exceptionally happy with the remasters. I wish they'd put this level of attention to detail into Chrono Trigger on Steam.
There's a couple of caveats worth mentioning with the pixel remasters that I feel this video fails to properly discuss. if you'll allow me to do so, I'd like to voice some additional things that Jared did not. - certain resolutions and DirectX settings do not properly interger scale the environments and characters, leading to probably the worst screen tearing and shimmering artifacts I've seen involving pixel art in ages. I've heard some folks say this may just be some sort of VSync issue? all 6 have this. - a fair bit of FF4 and FF5's personality are stripped out thanks to the pixel remasters sharing spell effects with one-another. while this isn't AS egregious in the NES trilogy which were already pretty minimalistic, the only PR that got it's own spell effects is FF6, once again showing that they clearly showed love to the most popular and beloved one. a thing that strips them all of their personality is how each game seems to be using identical UI layout rather than trying to mimic the UI of their original releases. - FF2's system changes seem to be more lifted from the PSP version, and I know at least one person who feels that later releases ruin Final Fantasy 2's delicate gameplay balance and that he will be sticking to the Super Famicom version. also, they changed Dual Wielding by making characters retarget with their second weapon if they manage to defeat the first enemy, so... that's kinda wild and makes Melee far better! Between balance changes and there still being some DNA from GBA/PSP releases underneath the hood of each of these, it makes for releases that honestly are a bit hybridized. - Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 in particular suffer from some serious bugs that rival their original releases or even surpass them. Yes, you can't wear a potion for a hat as the supreme ultimate armor, evasion works, and you can't corrupt RAM by attempting to sketch an invisible Intangir while someone in the party is an imp, but you CAN take a specific tile out of Albrook and get dumped out in the World of Balance and revisit an empty floating continent, or having your savefile rendered unplayable if you equip Gau with equipment that shadow had on during Sabin's scenario and then the game wigs out when it tries to reequip Shadow during the Thamasa leg 8 hours later in your playthrough, not to mention just all the various soft locks relating to the freeze status effect or the game just not looking a series of animations overlapping. FF5 had things like the control command causing a huge memory leak, Bestiary entries and Blue Magic spells not properly flagging, equipment like the Gold Hairpin not functioning at all or dualcast not properly working with certain magic types... of course the funniest one was soft-locking your save by landing your airship in a desert and then diving it as a submarine deep into the core of a continent, only to become locked within the soil for all eternity.
Thanks for this comment ! I also have huge issues with tons of bugs that magically appeared in the FFVI pixel remaster version. I usually play in "memory" for the control. Which is particularly useful for Gau in VI. But the targetting system is all over the place. If you cast an offensive magic at all enemies and then want to cast a cure on all your party next turn, it will target enemies by default. And vice-versa ! When you enter the magic selection screen, the cursor won't appear before you move it at least once. Also, it seems that entered commands will not reset once Gau appears during a battle on the Veldt. So you have to be super careful when grinding Rages. Speaking of which, there are tons of new options to order litterally anything in the game... (to the point that Magics can be in a quite messed up order by default, see how Terra and Celes can end up having a Cura in the middle of offensive magics, for example) Why are the rages still not in alphabetical order or sortable ? That's like the only thing with items that actually needed to be sorted ! What do I care about sorting blitzes, seriously ? A separate option between Shadow's specific throwable items and normal weapons would also have been a welcome addition, rather than having to scroll all the time between shirukens and scrolls... Who actually throws weapons away in FFVI ? Also, the benefits of relics that gives you special status ailment disappears if a character dies and get revived during a battle. Not a deal breaker, still, but that was rather disappointing... What's worse is that it's not the case for the bad status ailments you get from the Cursed Shield! Die while the counter is not yet over, revive, and the counter resumes ? Plus now it defaults to 40 instead of 60... I know Hermes Sandals (formerly RunningShoes) are too strong, but given the fact they fixed the evasion-related bug, I'd like stuff to work as they were supposed to ! I'm also not a big fan of the fact spells won't show if they miss... Also what happened to the Ultima Weapon animations ? :( The new music, translation, compatibility with large screen and special effects make this worth your money. But given the history of FFIX or VIII, I have very low hope that Square Enix will actually fix their mess :( I couldn't care less about the font they used. But all these issues make FFVI Pixel Remaster NOT the definitive version I was hoping for. It's definitely better than the Playstation or GBA versions but... Go get a SNES Mini, rather.
Projared's review in general just felt kind of half assed and forgot to mention several things a lot of people reported. Specially in 6, which to be fair he did claim to be a massive biased fanboys towards, it seem like the remastered music just made him turn a blind eye to a lot of issues.
@@okagron I'm a huge biased fanboy too. Nevertheless, that new version is rigged with bugs, so much that it's hard to miss ! And I was pissed off when I got my savefile corrupted by the infamous sketch on Intangir bug as well in the original version.
@@Chipstouille I played through to the World of Ruin and now I’m screwed because Humbaba doesn’t flee when you fight him in Mobliz - the fight just keeps going and I run out of MP after like 10 minutes. Also battles freeze sometimes when the last enemy is dispatched but the music still plays as if the game doesn’t recognize that the fight is over. It’s a huge mess and an even bigger disappointment. I feel like not even picking it back up until they patch it.
@@doubleecho1980 The worst I got was when my characters all got frozen (already mentioned), when enemies just stop doing nothing. Since Ribbon doesn't protect you anymore from Frozen status, what a joy ! Maybe it was never intended to, but try getting Marvel Shoes at the Collisseum now, good luck ! Otherwise, I get tons of unnecessary "no effect" messages at the end of battles too, it feels really screwed up. But luckily, so far, it didn't fully froze (in battle at least) or softlock for me. I guess you could blame the lack of compatibility with PC hardware regarding this kind of issues. But I've played Bethesda games (in the past!), I get you, I know how bugs can be totally random, believe me. Sorry if you got softlocked. That's a reason to never pick up a game again at all for me (for ex: Kingdom Comes: Deliverance save bug got me right after playing like 2 to 3h, never picked up the game again...) That's another reason why I'm a fan of Final Fantasy and not Ultima, Fallout or whatever to start with. Because it played on CONSOLES. You know S-E, those little things that used to have no compatibility issue, where you released your games once upon a time... With far much less bugs. There's so many reasons I'm pissed at Square Enix I'm not able to enumerate them anymore. Never I have seen a company screw up so much their own legacy.
Played them all, at least 5 of them on the GBA from Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Dawn of Souls. To Final Fantasy 4 Advance, Final Fantasy 5 Advance and Final Fantasy 6 Advance. Best retro Final Fantasy games are best to be played with the 2D Graphics they were originally played as but with the visuals only being updated when needed but everything else kept. Final Fantasy 4, 5 and 6 are best of these collections and really shows how much SNES games were when it came to JRPGs. Dragon Quest needs this sort of update to their first 6 games too.

^ This. These issues are the only things that bothers me in the Pixel Remasters. Thank you, modders, you have my respect
Can the modders also add the content from other releases, most notably from FF5, please and thank you?
Hey I got a question, is it possible to mod the sprires so it can be bigger than 32x ?

Which, when it comes to making a game catering heavily to nostalgia, it's so important to get those little touches right.
they could of fixed the crappy sprites how can they be worse then the originals make no sense to me
V and VI's sprites look much better than the previous mobile releases, and I/II/IV return to the iconic pixels after the PSP chibified them differently.
@@browncoatkevin No. they look terrible. the unaltered sprites from the SNES should be used.
Jared the reason that 6 is harder is probably because you have the battle speed turned up which disproportionately affects enemy attack speeds, buff durations and dot ticks without having an effect on your own characters atb meters
That must be a bug? I always crank battle speed to max on JRPG's and they are supposed to effect party atb bars as well.
Yeah, the battle speed in reality is a difficult meter.
"...how it feels like a film..."

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is now on PS4 and Switch on April 20, 2023. Don't miss out !
my biggest complaint for the remasters is taking out previous bonus stuff, like new bosses's dungeons etc. So say you wanted the extra stuff from FF1's dawn of souls you are out of luck.
Also taking away other versions even if they were inferior is a low blow
Outside ff4 the new content they added is really bad though
@@jackimus8987 I like dragon's den. Soul shrine on the other hand...
@@jackimus8987 In your personal opinion. I (along with many others it seems) happen to enjoy the extra stuff.

And it's being intentionally left in all ports and remakes for 20 years or so...

Its overall a good change but it has been making the difficulty trivial for me, I would have loved some kind of option to tune the exp/gold gain.
is there a difficulty change or is it that youve played them a bunch and you know everything to exploit
This January they finally updated the PC version to get the changes from the console versions which added a new pixel font!
I agree with this. I wish they made a hard mode or just something else extra aside from the visual change.
They should have just used the ready made sprites from FFRK

And the best about in pc is that you can mod most of these stuff. There’re mods of the color palette, sprites, fonts, UI, music, difficulty. The only thing missing now it’s the randomizer.
@@TShadowStalker It's not really that subjective. As addressed in the video, the character sprites don't match everything else in terms of color palette, texture, and rendering style.
Wished they had expanded the PSP remasters to all 6 of the old Final Fantasies. Those got me to play 4 and enjoy it without it looking terrible.
the PSP remaster was my first experience with 4. Those remasters were great.
3D FF4 is the best version
I'm pissed that they took those versions off the Play Store, we should have been issued refunds.
I grew up playing FFVI through GBA and I loved everything (the music included). It hurts to think that it does not really compare to other versions, but hey! At least I know now what versions to try (most likely the pixel remastered).
By now, there are miltiple patches for the GBA version that put it on par with the other ones.
Lol
he is right to dismiss it. you can read it, right? good enough.
Here after they made it to switch and PS. They fixed the font!!
For example the experience and gold values in FF1 are not even close to original)
-the text (at least that's easy to fix, and honestly not a huge deal to begin with.)
-I have mixed feelings about the brightened sprite remakes, especially in FF6 I feel like it robs some of the atmosphere of the game.

Call me spoiled by modern gaming conveniences (maps, quick-saves, etc.), but I honestly don't think I would ever have stuck with any of these three games in their original versions.
these modern conveniences just makes the games too easy.
I've watched this multiple times projared. Please keep making this great content. You are by far one of my favorites and one of the most knowledgeable
They're even better now with the updates to speed up grinding and the font.
It becomes unreadable on a TV especially for people with eyesight problems.
they couldve at least had another text option in game considering the proper font is in the game files (you change the japanese font filename to EN and it fixes it on pc)
my first reaction to the font was thinking it was like a default font in RPG maker or something
Octopath Traveler font would be perfect

Square should make a Jetsons RPG. I'll let them use my amazing character portrait of George Jetson
wow, that FF6 opera scene with the 3D castle is that first ive seen of a game having the original(or remake) sprite palette applied to a low poly 3D model. ive only ever seen some fan animations of that particular type of style in use.
edit: WAIT, THESE STILL ARENT ON ANY FUCKING CONSOLE!? HEH!?
It IS one of the few games on steam that recognizes a ps4 controller for on screen prompts, so it's probably getting a console port sometime soon
Many games read PS inputs and Valve recommends to devs to do so based on their controller use data.

easy solution, hook your PC up to your tv, and play it on your tv through steam.
Or you can use any remote play app on your mobile devices and hook it up with bluetooth controller?
Hooking a PC up to a TV isn't any harder than with a console. You take the HDMI/DisplayPort/whatever cable and you hook it up. Bam. Console port.
@@garburias Nah, as far as I know, the pixel remasters still don’t have controller support on mobile. For some bizarre reason.
really looking forward to the OUYA release
I'm still amazed by VI having so many different language versions of the Opera. Like, I never imagined I'd be hearing it in German
Steamdeck is basically a console
Ya know what also has all those final fantasy games and can probably emulate the psp and GBA versions of those games?
Yeah the steam deck
Not to mention the first 6 we’re on Nintendo consoles to start with. It would bring it full circle. And it would be so nice to have the full collection in one place, preferably physical so I can have them for years to go back to.
the sprites could be better but I am fine with their new choice, but what I do really dislike is the font type (I know there's mods but this would be a deal breaker if they release the pixel remasters to consoles) and the huge empty space on the battlefield. On the bright side the music is worth owning the games alone, they really nailed with that aspect.
This was a fantastic detailed breakdown of these pixel remasters. Very informative and well-balanced. Entertaining as always! Thanks Jared!

The fact that someone has mentioned the Ouya in 2022 is apalling.
THIS! AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE ADDED VOCALS-
The pixel remasters of Final Fantasy were great.
@@omensoffate Why are you here then? Just to complain?
@@CoralCopperHead We get it. You hate the sprites. How many times are you gonna repeat the same crap?

The Switch and PS4 versions added several small yet very much welcome changes.
The effort they put into the remaster for 6, makes me want an HD-2D remake for it
since Octopath I´m amazed enix haven´t done that
I totally agree put them on all the consoles. I'd buy them for the ones I have, which is most of them.😄
You know, it's kind of funny that you mention how good these games look, when I actually thought otherwise.
It reminds me of those ios sprites just without the puffed up chests. I'm just not a fan of such saturated colors done this way, it hurts my eyes.
the fact that they did this and didnt just rip from the SNES sprites show its just a soulless cash grab.
Kind of surprised the crt filter wasn’t mentioned in the video or the comments, that was a huge surprise that made 6 look so good
Damn man, your passion for these games makes your videos so much better
Great video. And yeah this needs to be on consoles. Crazy they aren't.
Ohhhhh I've been hoping Jared talked about these
Since he's kind of going through the Final Fantasy series, it makes sense that he'll wanna go over whether the Remasters are worth it
The PSP versions of FF 1-4 look absolutely amazing on PPSSPP at 8x internal resolution. So that's my fav ways to play those games in particular. I'm glad that the pixel remasters offer great ways to play these games now.
Which would you say is better? PSP emulation or Pixel Remaster

14:17 Yes, Squeenix! Do what ProJared says and put those Pixel Remasters on all console storefronts. It's easy money in da bag. Do it mon!!
Yet they did on PlayStation and Switch. I have FF6 obviously as the best.
Many of FF3PR's jobs do seem to more closely resemble the ones from the DS version.
It's same as it was in the mobile and old steam version.
PIty about losing the extra dungeon and espers in FF VI, I really liked collecting everyone's ultimate weapons even though they were just cherries on top when Genji Glove x Master Scroll, Quick, Dualcast Ultima, etc. exist, and it's not like they add story or anything. Gotta pour one out for loss of old Gilgamesh, though, we'll miss you Greg. ;w;
I actually downloaded this game for my switch emulator on my Android phone. ❤
I gave a try to FF2 for the first time, I enjoyed it overall. The story is pretty good and music are pretty good.
my favorite run of FF2 was still soloing running a guy with base armor, base fists, and a buckler on the DS version, that game's so broken I love it
Yeah, I think 2 is way too overly hated.

My only gripe with VI is that the sprites are too colorful, every previous FF had that style so it's fine for them, but the SNES sprites had a darker and detailed palette, and the remaster should reflect that.

The whole "no extras" thing is the ultimate dealbreaker for me.
It isn't "just stuff", like wtf... o.O

For real, when I played ff6 for the first time my jaw literally dropped for the entirety of the small island sequence.
IDK, I personally don't think any game is perfect if you need to apply mods to be happy with it.
The new music, translation, compatibility with large screen and special effects make this worth your money. But given the history of FFIX or VIII, I have very low hope that Square Enix will actually fix their mess :(
I couldn't care less about the font they used.
That's a reason to never pick up a game again at all for me (for ex: Kingdom Comes: Deliverance save bug got me right after playing like 2 to 3h, never picked up the game again...)
That's another reason why I'm a fan of Final Fantasy and not Ultima, Fallout or whatever to start with.
Square Enix: "Wish Granted"
Hey Jared when’s the FF12 review ?
