Final Fantasy IV appeared as the first Final Fantasy on the SNES, Nintendo's brand new 16-bit console... but it has been re-released, remastered and remade numerous times since.
The challenge, is that every version is different. Some feature new graphics, while others feature different scripts, new story and new bonus content.
Throughout this video, we're going to run-through each of the versions highlighting what they brought to the table!

@@TheJbrown60 I dunno. I played the GBA one an it was laggy and glitchy. Not very "definitive" attributes.
Further on the 3D release of the game - we can thank Tom Slattery for the re-translation. The plan during development was to just work off of the GBA script, but Slattery recognized numerous difficulties in just trying to copy and paste it between games (like making the dialogue match adjusted choreography of what the characters are doing in the scene, or how the dialogue windows are just structured different).
So, he convinced his superiors to let him retranslate the entire game from the original Japanese as long as he did it within the same timeframe he had, and he used that opportunity to give the script more flair, like giving the Summoned Monsters a proper term since they had never had one before, fancy terms like "Mythgraven Blade", "the Feymarch", etc.
And why did he go this extra mile? Because Slattery was a personal fan of the game and it was his favorite in the series.

My only problem with some of the newer 2D versions is that Cecil’s battle sprite looks kinda ugly.
I LOVE the look and pixel art of the PSP version. Definitely my favorite version.
It's sad that square is lazy enough to do a decent job for steam, imagine if we got a non cellphone port, and it's quite expensive, a god damn port that lazy is 15 euros on steam lmao, 1 to 6 is like that, pisses me off, wish we got complete collection on steam
@@vinicinfodexota5083 I like the Steam version. It's the DS version with additional content and an option to play on a difficulty other than Kaizo. It's my second favourite behind the PSP version. J2E translation is 3rd best by default.
The GBA, SNES, DS, and PS1 games have all been superceded by the above versions.
Original Japanese, Original US, and PSP versions are respectable. The rest are garbage with gimmicks.
DS version was the sole reason I picked up a DS in the first place. My personal choice of version between that and the PSP Collection.
Me too. I used to play it on a laggy emulator around 2010, which lead me to buy a DS just to play it perfectly.
Ditto, I never even ended up using my DS for any other game.
Isn't DS version like super hard? I played it and you have to grind so hard,not sure what I am doing wrong
@@mikeydubs_tv I didn’t find it super hard, just don’t run from battles, explore all maps for loot and purchase other upgrades and there shouldn’t be much/any grinding needed.

FF IV on the GBA was my first ever FF game, and to this day it is my favorite FF game, and one of my favorite games of all time. It’s very dear to my heart
Good taste man.
All of the early FFs were good, but IV is for sure the definitive 'what a Final Fantasy should feel like' experience. Like, V is cool for the class system, VI is totally epic, but they can be a little awkward. IV just guides you through a nice adventure, never holding your hand too much or too little.

Literally same, I must have played it 20 times from start to end on GBA.
FF4 on DS is essentially what I would have expected a remake to be.
Still maintaining the qualities and charm of the original, but fleshing out its world, characters, and gameplay to be even better. Between this and the PSP, I've probably replayed the DS version the most.

The DS version is better than the PSP version - hands down. Final Fantasy Union, they're a couple of clowns for thinking otherwise.
The gameplay is sluggish and tedius, and the art direction is distracting when paired with the dark tone of the narrative. The only thing it has over other versions is it's high quality voice acting.
@@vgnvideogameninja2930 That's too harsh on them, especially since they didn't even say that the PSP version was "the best". The DS version would probably be the best option for someone who already played FF4 before but for people who are new to it, I think the PSP collection would be better. For one, it is the best version of the original 2D version of the game in terms of graphics (I personally prefer Advance's enhanced pixel art tho), music quality, english script and bonus content. With it also including the tie-in interlude and After Years, it pretty much has all the essentials from FF4.
Don't get me wrong though, as I also think FF4 DS is the best version of the game with all its improvements on literally everything, but the PSP one is a more "complete" experience while still staying close to the original. FF4 DS is almost an entirely different game experience similar to how FF7 remake is. It is best to play it once you go through the original "feel" of the game first and then you'll come to even appreciate the improvements of the DS version even more.
@@RichterTheRat This is SO important. The tone of 3D is so vibrant, colorful and paints such a classic adventure in FFIII. But in FFIV! It changes the theming! The VA is actually distractingly melodramatic and cheezy. I'm not gonna lie it hurts the feeling provoked by the story fairly often...
2021 is Final Fantasy IV’s 30th Anniversary!

FF14 has a expansion with a decent amount of FF4 nods from the looks of it coming Fall this year lets hope we get a interesting FF4 release too perhaps on switch with a more customizable experience combining the advantage of DS and PSP

I wish Final Fantasy 6 was given this treatment. But I love Final Fantasy 4. Definitely in my Top 5.
All these versions of Final Fantasy IV, now a remake of VII, but the version crying out for a remake is VI, still the greatest FF in my opinion.
Agreed. Why has there been so many remakes of 4 but only the GBA remake of six? A lot of people consider it the best game in the series.

@@58jharris 4 was butchered in north America. 6 was not. Majority of those who played 6 got the best possible experience at launch while those who played 4 did not. Square has been trying to retroactively correct that mistake

The first real RPG I ever played was the NA Final Fantasy "II" release of this game. I'll never forget it. Now I need to play the Complete Collection.

FF III Has already been remade in 3D. It's available on PC.
@@vibra7 I wish they would re-release other Square games. We have a million versions of Final Fantasy, but things like Bahamut Lagoon and Treasure of Rudras still never have even had official English releases.

@@infasis Bahamut Lagoon is a cool game, I'd love to see an official English release of that. But the FFIV complete collection on PS4/Switch stores making it more widely available than just the PSP/Vita and PCs with emulation would be great, a solid addition and I'd purchase it. If they can put up Romancing SaGa 2 on the PSN I think they should do this.

@@FinrodFelagundTheFair Some of us played the game when it first came out in 1997 and simply never knew her as Aerith - some of us still don't. I call her Aeris to this day unless I'm discussing FF7 in online gaming communities, but for me to vocally call her Aerith feels weird.

@@Soapy_Papoose sadly... while I understand why many people want an alternate universe where Aerith and Zack can be alive and well together, their deaths were meaningful, emotional sacrifices. Undoing that, removing consequences and such, cheapens the story. Frustrating that SQEX seems intent on doing an AU fanfic of their own otherwise brilliant story.
The good thing with so many existing version is that you are sure to find the one that will suit you.
And you can have a new experience every time you replay it.
Then there is the rabbit hole of rom hacks.
I would love to see more videos like this from you! I’m quite indecisive when it comes to games with multiple ports/remakes/remasters so being able to see all of them laid out and compared is quite brilliant
The Complete Collection for sure, and then throw in the FF4 Remake on PC for a slightly different experience. Love it!
@@theashenogre8948 I think so, but I like the PC interface better and I think it plays smoother than the DS.
Have you (or anyone) played The After Years on Steam? It's TAY content in the DS's 3D style...it's one of the only versions I haven't played. I actually like TAY, but I prefer to emulate the PSP version so I can fast forward.
I'm partial to the DS version, I find the art style has a magical effect.
That, and the compressed files of the redone soundtrack in tbe DS soundchips added this charm that the uncompressed soundtrack just doesn't jive with me.
@@hogoototwilightian628 the only thing that doesn't jive with me is the difficulty. DS version is the hard difficulty of Japanese version of the game (I forgot which one). Didn't notice that until late game 😂 was hard for me.

The Japanese version you're thinking of is the original original snes version. I like it this way because if you take advantage of the new Augment System, you could break the early game. So it really balances out with you being overpowered and the enemies dealing unfair amounts of damage.
I am as well, and the difficulty actually just made it more satisfying to me in the end. It became something that annoyed me and got me stuck a bit only a few occasions (such as a certain fight in the Underworld that begins with everyone besides one knocked out and then a race to revive and fight back; got killed before I had a chance to do much reviving a few times and it sometimes felt unfair). Most of the time it just made things a bit more challenging and exciting and was fine.

Oh, THAT fight. Yes, its objectively the most unfair boss in the game. Because the boss is so fast, and its spells are amplified to just the two party members. When you're whole party is up, the boss only does chip damage. It's the beginning of the fight that blows. And to top it all off, you start the fight as soon as you end one before. It is sincerely unfair.

I say its a big difference, because the DS PC version was originally been modified to be on mobile. So the UI just takes up the entire screen, and the faster frame rate desyncs the cutscenes. I hate that UI, anf its also in another version. That being the rushed, no effort 3D version of FF4: The After Years. What. A. Mess.
It is so interesting to see how the perception of a videogame's difficulty has changed throughout the years! The American public supposedly preferred an easier version of the game back in the days, whilst today more challenging games seems to be more welcomed. Amazing story telling as usual. You guys are the youtube bards of Final Fantasy :)
That was just the Japanese perceptions of Americans at the time. Americans didn't want an "easy" RPG. They thought thats why RPGs didn't sell well here.
The DS Remake...my goodness...I fell in love with this game all over again...Kain, Cecil and Rosa were some of the best characters created in the FF series and this game fleshed them out even more. One of my favorite FF of all time

The only thing I was left wanting were more CG cutscenes like that throughout the game... It was absolutely mesmerising to see everyone fully brought to life as a rendered character.
I thought the DS version was amazing. Graphics and voice acting were spot on. I couldn’t put it down when I played it, and it was way more challenging.
I agree, but one thing I liked about the original is you didn’t have to grind to beat the game. The 3D version you literally got swamped in difficulty everywhere!
@@justacrewchief4561 Fellow miserable (Avinonics) maintainer here! Yes, the Lunar surface was difficult. Then, the final lunar dungeon was absurd in terms of difficulty.
@@smokeyjail4394 exactly! When you went after Bahamut it was nearly impossible! End game was basically unbalanced. It was great visually and the soundtrack was improved. But the unbalancing was harshly done! Good to see another maintainer in the FF nerd clan!
Disclaimer, while I appreciated not having to hourly grind to be able to beat the original, but I did think it was too easy with the only difficult fight being for the Holy Lance and the Ribbons
@@justacrewchief4561 I would rather have an easy than a hard jrpg, since these games aren't really mechanical skill/reaction based. It's not playing a hard action game where your success depends on how good your reflexes are. They're rng and knowledge based. And rng can be a total bitch. I'd much rsther have a game that doesn't need to grind to beat nor does it have bullshit instakill attacks that you can't do anything about other than pray to rngesus that the enemy doesn't attack that way.
The DS FF4 was my first FF game! Though I never knew this was the hard mode lmao. I remember playing through this game so many times as a kid! I might have to see if I still have my copy of it, and replay it
I still have a copy of it, despite it being hard, I loved the hell out of it. One of my Top Favorite FF games.
I stopped playing when I was on the moon at the final dungeon, the game was so damn hard. When the PSP version came out I finished that one.

I have very fond memories of this game. Being a fan of the Legend of Zelda games, I decided to give Final Fantasy 2 for the Super NES a try. Keep in mind this was long before the 32 bit consoles were released. At first I hated it, but decided to stick with it. Soon I found myself enjoying it much more than the Zelda series. Sometimes there is rare occurrence when you play a game at first you don't like, but after learning the game mechanics it becomes one of your favorites. For me this was very much one of these instances. The PSP version looks very cool. I wish they would port this over to PSN with trophies. I would love to relive a part of my childhood with an graphically update version.
I just recently played the steam version (DS version I suppose) and it easily became one of my favorite games. I played through the game in hard mode and yes, it was definitely pretty tough, but after you put thought into the fights and maybe a LITTLE bit of grinding, you’ll come across some of the most satisfying victories ever. I had so many pop off moments during my play through because of this. I’d highly recommend that version for those who enjoy the sense of challenge in their video games.
Its criminal that the PSP version hasn't been ported to Steam yet, as someone who has played FFIV since 1991, its the most definitive version, unless you want the original experience, then Final Fantasy IV hard type on the SFC/SNES with a translation patch. I would pay big bucks to play 1-6 in the sprite style they did for the PSP version.
I've only played my snes version. I love the flaws. The graphics and music still amaze me. The story, doesn't hit like that first playthrough as a kid. But still epic, and my favorite game.
Story wise the complete collection Edition for PSP is the best in my opinion, but the 3D remake for the Nintendo DS has a masterfully orchestrated soundtrack as well as an augment system which encouraged players to go and explore the world after every boss as well as talk to a lot of NPC to immerse themselves in the world. But that's just my opinion.

Great video, this has been sorely needed for years. Would you believe that there are even more versions though? This video covered the officially released ones, but there is still also the usual pirate cart for the NES (actually carts, it's a strange 3 part NES game). And also gobs and gobs of fan translations and script edits.

My all time favourite was FFIV 3D Remake on the DS. I remember losing my mind when it was announced to be released. I waited so diligently and felt a sweet release when I finally got it. I've always wanted to experience good ol 2D FF's in 3D. The cutscenes, the voice actors, the writing, and of course the entire game being reworked in beautiful 3D was a godsend to me. It's also the reason why I even got STEAM in the first place. I wanted to experience that game, but on PC instead since my DS had long been dead by 2014 or so. Timeless classic I can always go back and revisit, probably remembering most of it not all the secrets contained in it upon each playthrough.
The PSP Complete Collection is the definitive version as someone who played the original on SNES when it was Final Fantasy II.
That said, the DS version looks fantastic and was really fun. They kept the spoony bard line, that's all that needed to be done

FF4 DS is the seconf FF game I've ever played. First being FF3 on the DS. It's still one of the best gamesI have ever played.

I think fans should play either PSP or the 3D remake (i recommend the PC version) or both if you are a hardcore fan because both have good things.
Things i like in PSP 2D
*Clean and detailed places and backgrounds
*2D Character sprites
*A few more extra areas
Things i like on 3D version
*3D models... I like how Cecil looks more like his original artworks and Rosa looks better. Also, 3D weapons looks much better! Rosa with a Bow is so cute and Cecil with Ragnarok and Edge with his blades are so cool.
*Voice acting... Not ony the Japanese sounds good (as usual) but the English is also very good, Cecil and Rosa voices are awesome!
*Hardest Super Boss ever?
*No bad random stats gains like getting 0 in all stats at lv up (yes in every 2D versions you can get unlucky 0 stats...)
I also picked up the Steam version recently, and really my only criticism of it is the interface.

Nice video, I'm on same quest, to beat every numbered FF. I have 5 titles left: 1, 2 , 4, 5 and 12. I was picking from "best" to worse, of course from what I remember. And I left 12 as last, since there's over 100 hours of gameplay, where older ones is about 15-20 hours.
For me it's the PSP Version.
Ugh, I skipped that one because I had the GBA, PS1, and DS versions already. I knew nothing about the PSP version, but if I did, I would have bought it. Time to look for it on the after market...

@@Blue-cc7qw Thanks. I found that the PSP version is still around and for a decent price so I got that physical copy instead, though it would look even better on the Vita. May have to check it out on the Vita too. I really like the PSP version graphics over the 3D on the DS, and to me the new sprites are superior in every way for an old school FF game, the PSP version is the definitive one to get.

The PSP Complete Edition is the Best Version!!! When I saw Tellah to Cast Meteor for the first time I got very impressive. Square made a great job on animations.
Can't go wrong with the original version. Remixes can be fun but they are ultimately derivative in nature. You will enjoy the remixes more if you start with the original masterpiece, the towering icon that made all of the other editions possible. You know it's great because it's been republished so many times. You can still feel the love and the resonating cultural impact three decades later. It's a beloved classic and a genuine cultural touchstone for multiple nations and multiple generations.
DS, it forced you, and let you, debuff mobs. You couldn't just mash the attack key, you had to shrink the warriors and turn casters into frogs or you would get wrecked. Also it has the best Black Chocobo song.
I've beat the 3D version several times and never used Toad or Mini on anything; there are other ways to deal with those things.
@@hoodedman6579 I could be remembering it wrong, it's been a while since it came out. I I'm pretty sure I was getting wrecked and PLing not helping much. Then I started to use debuffs and the game becoming fun.

I've only ever played the DS version of 4 (3 too). I like them enough that I never really wanted to play another.
I still have a soft spot for the DS version. I went through hard times trying to stay clean off herion in those days. RE4 got me through the initial withdrawal, but FF4 on DS saved me from relapsing , and too many times to count...FF4 on NDS basically saved my butt from descending into real life hell again .👊

This is my answer: The PSP version of FFIV is so good that I wish Square Enix would do the same for FFIII, FFV and FFVI.

I agree with the others the psp version its best.It may have 2 graphics but its better then playing on double screen like the ds version
The SNES is the only version I ever kept going with. None of the others were as good to me. Of course, I still have my original SNES copy and find its flaws endearing.
Yes! Is and always will be my absolute favorite ff game. Quite possibly my favorite game of all time. I remember playing it as a kid, and just absolutely falling in love with the story and everything about it.

revisiting this beautiful tribute to my favourite Final Fantasy's rich history, feels especially important as the Pixel Remaster. so far my most revered version of IV, is the PSP version on my PS Vita 0LED phat launch. this was one of the most important storyline's, as i grew up in gaming
I must say the Steam Version was a blast to play, and the first time I beat the game.
Im playing the Steam version now. I love the 3d graphics. Ive played the GBA and the PSP version but never beat it. Heres hoping the 3rd time is the charm lol

Having a dad who played heavily was a big influence. He was playing Dragon Warrior before I was born. So in certain situations, even being 6, just do what dad does. I dunno how many kids that young would know to cast "wall" (reflect) on Asura to make it an easy fight.

The PSP version blew me away, I don't think I could ever go back to the original even if it is an amazing game. The added content and features make it a must play if you love FFIV. It's a perfect conversion, absolute mastery.
Great breakdown, but you did miss one thing.
FF4: TAY actually did get a Steam release as well, but it was given the remake treatment. The Steam version of TAY was based on the DS version, therefore it's in 3D as opposed to 2D.
Because of this, that means you have an option to play the PC port of the DS version, as well as a version of TAY based off of that.
Its a simple answer, play the ds version AND complete collection and accept the time commitment 🤷🏿♀️

What about the Free Enterprise Randomizer? In all seriousness, I'd love to see a variant of Complete collection with the added bosses and augments from the DS remake, and re-balanced to make Interlude and After Years "disk 2 and 3" continuations of the story instead of separate games [like introducing certain characters like the older Eblan 5 members early and adding the after years combo attacks early where possible]. It could be an optional mode unlocked after completing the game like a "new game complete". Yes I like long and convoluted games.
I finished Final Fantasy 4 so many times and it is definitely on my top 5 favorite final Fantasy games. And, I was also thinking. If they remade the game one last time, and made it look like how the opening looked on the Ds version, my life would be complete.

PSP version for sure, although I liked the DS/Android version.
I'd recommend the original DS remake version over the Android/PC version. I just really don't like the touch phone UI. Its way to big.
For me its the DS version when it comes to presentation and difficulty.

For the most part I feel Complete is the definitive version, but I did love Yuri Lowenthal's voice acting for Cecil plus I loved all the thought bubbles when you would open the menu. The bubbles had different thoughts after practically every cutscene. Was a small detail that added a *ton* to the characters.
Wish I could plunk his acting and all the thought bubbles into Complete and then it'd be perfect lol.
As an owner of every version (clearly on my top 3 FF list lol). I have to say that the Complete Collection for PSP is the best overall

I disagree. The PSP version always bored me to tears when I played it. Its extra content is crap compared to what's on the DS version.

It’s weird to think of The Spirits Within as bombing, since I enjoyed it so much at release. The music particularly is great, as expected for a FF production.
I took acid and saw it in the theater so a pretty good experience but it's not very good in retrospect.
The voice acting in the 3D version is top-notch…The actors did a fabulous job with the script.

This is the game that made me passionate about video games. I remember playing the SNES version and was immediately hooked. This will forever be my favorite game of all time. Actually just beat the DS version a few months ago. I'm hopeful Square Enix continues with making versions of this game and gives us a modern take on it. Old school classic RPG fun with some of my favorite Final Fantasy characters.

The DS hands down, even if you dont like the 3D graphics the Gameplay improvements and cutscenes make It look like a whole new game

Amazing breakdown FFU! FFIV is my favorite game of all time and I absolutely adore the original US release as FFII. I bought the DS version with VERY low expectation, but was quite surprised, and fell right into the story. My doubts over the voice acting were erased and I am still very impressed by the quality performance by the voice actors. The rage in Rydia's voice after the destruction of Mist literally brought tears to my eyes, and I'm a burly ogre.
That's cool to hear the voice acting was good. I'm usually not a fan of it's use.
I played final fantasy 4 when it was released in the US when I was a kid. First RPG I ever played and in my opinion one of the best, though I was unaware there were alternate versions of the game.
My version is always the one that contains the line: You...SPOONY BARD!!

Everyone swears by the 2d psp but I completely disagree. The remake on ds and pc is far better and actually presents a challenge.
From what I heard, people just don't like the clowny art style. I'm not a fan of the PSP version's RPG Maker style, so it's probably more what you grew up with, and Playstation raised a lot more Final Fantasy fans than Nintendo.
The DS version of the 3D game is the way to go for me. The PC port of the 3D game is really watered down and bad though. The big touch phone UI and the change of perspective is awful to me.
Final fantasy 3 ds and 4 ds are fugly. Psp version is the best IMO
@@gigastrike2 Yeah, the extremely low res chibi models are a huge turn-off to me, as is that gaudy font and UI. A PC does not have a touch interface, therefore I don't need *GIGANTIC FREAKING BUTTONS* that take up a huge portion of the viewing area. In the original game, the battle UI sat neatly at the bottom 30% of the viewing area, unless you pulled an item/spell menu up. In the PC version? You got these HUGE buttons taking up more than half of the whole viewing area and it's just.... it feels clunky and wholly unnecessary and the only reason I can think of why it's like that, is because they just ported the whole thing over from smartphones and the only thing they did was remove touchscreen functionality but left the UI alone, therefore the buttons are still humongous because they were made for 4x7 inch (or whatever they are) screens and not 27+ inch 1080p+ displays.

This was my first rpg. When it came out for the NA snes as FF2. It changed my life, and was the greatest game ever, until FF3 (6) came out.. 6 is still my fav game ever. Nothing comes close. It would be incredible if they remade it like they did 7, added stuff to it, and came out with a collectors version. With an Amano art book. Imagine Zozo, the Opera, the world of ruin, all redone with today’s capabilities! :3 :3

The Final Fantasy II SUPER NES Version is the one I grew Up With. Still to this day I love it
I played FFIV as FF2 for SNES. I rented this game every weekend. I remember renaming Rydia "Food" on my file (my big brother suggested this). So when Leviathan attacked he ate Food.
I have the PSP version, and redownloaded the voice acted DS version recently. I wasn't expecting to hate the DS graphics so much, it really hasn't aged well... and the voice acting is few and far between. go for PSP all the way!

One heads up for you, the JP version uses a lot of non standard japanese, and a lot of archaic language iirc. Just letting you know so you're ready for it c:
Unlike nes games, super Nintendo and Famicom versions use Kanji which will make it difficult for a beginner in Japanese.
Before even watching the video, The Complete Collection is hands down the best version for me, and I highly recommend it. A proper remake of an old 2D Final Fantasy. I'd love to see each old FF done in this manner =^.^=
Lol I just made this exact comment before watching the video. I would pay big money to see 1-6 done in the exact sprite fashion they did for FF4 CC on the PSP.

What I remembered was "wall" got nerfed it was the trick to get bahamut but the mega nuke penetrated the wall spell. Not sent back and the crystal sword just got left behind do to the constant nuke drops.
I always go for the 3d release. After Years is bad, and I love how the 3d and voice acting transform how the story's presented and told. I love my Steam release.
Also the steam version makes it more difficult to use weapons as items.

I wish I'd seen this before. To introduce my son to some of the games I'd played as a youth, I started with him on FFIV - The Steam/PC Release. The intro is well done, and the voice acting is nice, but I wish I'd have started with the Complete Package. I don't think he has the patience to start over, at this point. Great review.
