Imagine if HD2D (the people who made Octopath Traveler and are remaking DQIII) decided to remake the first two games and release them in one bundle, now THAT would be the best remake of these games! Like the first enemies you encounter in Final Fantasy 4 PSP already fill the entire screen, but that should be saved for boss sprites. Pixel art closer to the original is more charming, IMO. Final fantasy 1 is an excellent adventure. All the necessary information to progress the story is in the dialogue with NPCs. It makes you pay attention. Every town reveals something new. • @vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898
    @vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898 2 года назад +16

    Since the original game was based on 74s Dungeons & Dragons, there's a reason why characters attack air when an enemy dies. Turn based is a simulation, not a real-time battle. Each turn, all PCs and NPCs/Monsters attack, more or less at the same time. The order of attacks simulates initiative, a speed-based mechanic, with faster characters acting first. So, all players state their actions for this specific round, and two PCs attack the same foe, both striking at the same time, but one connects his attack before the other by mere fragments of second; when damage dealt is deducted from the foe's reservoir of hit points, he is dead after the first attack, so the second attack hits a dead body. It was not a flaw but a feature. A bad feature that made the game annoying but a feature nonetheless. I'm glad they changed it, just like 77's Basic D&D changed it.
    And speaking of Dungeons & Dragons, it is incorrect that it contains spell points. In D&D, in all 11 versions*, the magic system is the same as Jack Vance's system: memorization. At level 1, you can memorize one spell per day, meaning once you cast that spell, you can't use it again until the next morning. Each level, you gain extra spells per day, and every few leves, you learn more advanced spells.
    *Yes, there are 11 editions of the game. The 6 Advanced versions are actually 6 entirely different games with different rulesets and goals, but one of the few things that remains the same is Vancian Magic. These are the 11 versions:
    OD&D
    Basic
    Basic/Expert
    BECMI
    Rules Cyclopedia
    Advanced 1st edition (1e)
    Advanced 2e
    Advanced 3e
    Advanced 3.5
    Advanced 4e
    Advanced 5e

    Great review. I reached the same conclusion as you did. If you haven't played the originals or other ports, this a good way to go and I know it pleases a lot of people that it's on Steam to play on PC. However, I'm cynical in a different way. I actually preferred the PSP remake because it looks more updated. I'm old enough to appreciate the retro graphics (I played the original on NES and owned the original cartridge), and honestly, there's nothing significant this version does that you can't do via emulation. Therefore, paying more than $10 for an old game on a modern console isn't worth it for me. However, if you're of a younger generation and haven't played the originals, this is good way to go, albeit overpriced in my opinion.

      I'm kinda torn myself. On some levels, I definitely prefer the PSP version for the updated graphics, and the item dupe glitch that makes speedrunning the game a lot of fun. On the other hand, any version of FF1 with an MP system feels too easy for me, because the game was serious balanced around the old school D&D spell points, so the gameplay balance of this version feels better.

    • @tamerkoh
      @tamerkoh 2 года назад +1

      @@RagnarokB It's all in your head. Spell charges versus MP change very little, due to how much the spells cost and how little max MP you gain per level. Say in NES FF1, you have 4 Level 1 spell charges at Lv 3, but in the MP based games, it's around 23 or so max MP, but the level 1 spells all cost 5 MP, so you can still only use them 4 times. Not to mention, all it really makes you do in the long run is never cast spells until bosses, or healing out of battle, thereby rendering the mages less effective attacking units until such times. This made them easily replaceable with another class, like another Warrior or Monk, or a Red Mage for the improved physical hits.

    Your review had a lot going for it in only 7 minutes. I'm impressed. FF1 has always been the easiest game in the series to pick up and replay as I constantly think about how I would go through the game with a different party setup.
    That said, I smiled with glee that I saw the promoted Warriors of Light all grown up like in the NES original. The biggest charm with the older Final Fantasy games is that since the main protagonists get no character development story-wise, there is a greater emphasis on their growth as adventurers and warriors (investing time grinding for experience and job levels helps with this, too). Seeing the characters "grow up" when they get promoted is IMO the best part of the first game.

    The one thing I don't like about these remasters, (I can forgive the extra dungeons) is going back to spell charges. I know why they did it, but I have never liked it even when I played it on the NES as a kid. Spell charges was the reason why I went with 3 Fighters and a Red Mage as a kid.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  2 года назад +2

      Spell charges in FF1 are far too limited, which takes the fun out of playing a mage imo. They stuck too close to the D&D numbers (max 9 slots for each spell level), which doesn't work in a game based on fighting dozens of random encounters between each rest. In FF3 the spell charges are much more generous and I never really had any issue with it! 😀

    You start by going to the Chaos Shrine to find Garland. You beat Garland to get Princess Sarah to give you the Lute and to get a bridge built to get to the rest of the continent. You take the bridge to get to Pravoka and find the pirate Bikke. You beat Bikke to get a ship. You take the ship to Elfheim and walk across the continent to the west to find the Marsh Cave. You get the Crown from the Marsh Cave and take it to the Western Keep to fight Astos. You beat Astos to get the Crystal Eye. You take the Crystal Eye to Matoya to get the Jolt Tonic. You take the Jolt Tonic to the Prince of Elfheim to get the Magic Key. You take the Magic Key to unlock a door in Corneria Castle to get the Nitro Powder. You take the Nitro Powder to the dwarves at Mt. Duergar to open a canal into the world ocean. You sail through the canal to get to Melmond. You go past Melmond to the Terra Cavern and go as far as you can to beat a Vampire and get a Star Ruby. You take the Star Ruby to the Titan in the Titan's Cave so you can pass and get an Earth Rod from the sage. You take the Earth Rod back to the Terra Cavern to get all the way to the end to beat Lich and relight the Earth Crystal. Then you sail to Crescent Lake and talk to the sages to get a canoe. You take the canoe to Mt. Gulg to beat Maralith and relight the Fire Crystal. Then you take the canoe to the Ice Cavern to find a Levistone. You take the Levistone to a desert to the south to get an airship. (If you like, you can fly the airship to the "left wing" of the northeast continent, land on a tiny patch of grass, and walk to the Citadel of Trials. You go through the Citadel to get a Rat's Tail. You take the Rat's Tail to Bahamut in the Cardian Isles to get a class change.) You take the airship to the Desert Caravan to buy a Bottled Faerie. You take the Bottled Faerie to Gaia to get Oxyale. You take the Oxyale to the submarine in Onrac to get to the Sunken Shrine. You go to the top of the shrine to get a Rosetta Stone and to the bottom of the shrine to fight the Kraken and relight the Water Crystal. You take the Rosetta Stone to Dr. Unne to learn to speak Lufenian. You go to Lufenia and talk to the people there to get a Mirage Bell. Then you take the canoe to a cave in the waterfall north of Onrac to get a Warp Cube from the robot. You take the bell and the cube to the Mirage Tower to get to the Flying Fortress. You go through the Flying Fortress to get Adamantite (if you want to) and to beat Tiamat and relight the Wind Crystal. (If you want) You take the Adamantite to the dwarves in Mt. Duergar to get the Excalibur. Then you go back to the Chaos Shrine and step through the center tile to get to the Temple of Chaos. You walk through until you get to a stone and use the Lute to reveal the last part of the dungeon. Finally, you walk through to the end, defeat the Lich, Maralith, the Kraken, and Tiamat a second time, and finally Chaos.
    Got it? Then do all that and you've mastered Final Fantasy.

    Does it have the additional dungeons added like in gba? Or anything additional end game?

      Unfortunately not! Content-wise, it's the same game as the original NES version, which is a shame.

      Magic heavy! 😮 Don't you feel like the red mage is a bit squishy given the gear limitations compared to the fighter?

      Altercate as kids my friends thought you couldn’t beat the game without a warrior it is entirely possibly when you use the spell to raise melee damage on nes the spell stacks so he gets stronger if you cast it on him a few times, try it sometime it’s fun and very op at the end

    Nah, I think I'll stay with the PSP versions of Final Fantasy available over there even if there are no auto battle option with it but at least it's a definitively fun experience.

    As someone who loved this game as a kid, I love that they updated things like combat and did bug stomping, while retaining the old magic system. Mana Points are cool, but FF I wasn't balanced for it.
    EDIT: My only beef was landing the airship got tricky in some spots. But that was minor.

    I hope the PC version gets UI and sprite mods since the visuals absolutley kills my desire for it. The sprites are very drab and low effort compared to even the GBA rerelease. And the UI is clearly designed for mobile in mind since i don't doubt it looks great on an iphone or galaxy screen. But on PC it's a miniscule eyesore
