I think a big issue with the pixel remaster is that it doesn't seem to take into account the artistic theme of a given FF game--Locke's original sprite is dark and gritty to fit thematically with the steampunk world and darker story of Final Fantasy 6. These sprites seem to have been made haphazardly without much care for the game they're being placed into. Same thing with the Android+iOS sprites.
That's exactly what I was thinking! IV and V already had bright colors anyway, but VI's new sprites are especially jarring because they're not supposed to be so vibrant. That's missing the whole point of that game's art direction and mood.
You mean Squeenix is only doing this the easiest way possible by redoing sprites across multiple games with vastly different worlds in one similar style without taking the time to even investigate if there was a reason behind the original artistry?! No way! It's not like this is just some mobile game that they're gonna spe-
Hmm? What's that? It _is_ on mobile? And that definitely not hyperbolic or sarcastic thing I said is almost certainly true?

I was gonna try and think of a clever way to end whatever the sweet, tasty hell this is but if half-assed is good enough for massive companies, why should I put in the effort?
@@Naterkix honestly, a straight up port of the gba versions (specialty with all the but fixes for 6) at this point would be the best option
@@j0j0dartiste21 That probably would be ideal but I think there might be some rights issues there, since they were on a Nintendo system originally. Squeenix'd have to pay multiple companies for console versions too and I'm guessing (but don't know for sure) they can reach more people and make more money by plopping them to phone app stores.
Maybe I'm wrong but mobile seems to have _way_ less quality control than consoles even if it sometimes may not _seem_ that way (lookin' at you Life of Black Tiger and Final Sword).
Frankly, you're making a lot of assumptions just because his jacket is a lighter shade of blue.
Is like to see an HD-2D remake of FF6 similar to what Dragon Quest is doing.
Obviously it involves much more works because DQ3 HD in essence is a 3D game with real-time 3D lightings and modern post-processing fx.
Simply put, Square is being lazy with these "pixel remasters".
@@ultracapitalistutopia3550 Yea but the new soundtracks arrangements are really tempting me to buy it, damned Square tempting me again with their music
Ive been saying this for a while i still hope we get it
YES!
Omg, ever since Octopath came out, I've been wishing that someone from the Doom modding community of all places to use its 2D-sprites-in-3D-environment engine to emulate an RPG maker in that style. From there, I really need someone to remake FF6 like that.
All I wanted was for FF5 and 6 to get the PSP treatment, those graphics are gorgeous and the animations for spells in FF4 in particular were beautiful too
Hundred million dollars say you probably said the exact same shit about the PSP remakes back when those came out lol.
@@mamayareborn The PSP remakes were widely loved though, stop trying to create an argument.
LowHP comic ff6 did not need any treatment. You just need to re-release something very close to the original with a remastered soundtrack like the rest of the pixel remasters and you'll have the best possible experience
@@mamayareborn nah, you kidding?? I fucking LOVED those remakes, they were beautiful and visually Innovative!
@@alanlee67 wouldn't that just be a modded version of the FF6 with the mods being brighter sprites and changing the music?
I'm fine with the sprites. My issue is the price and lack of console ports.
and the lack of content?
ff5 and 6 are snes base game... so no extra dungeon
Those games its only be available for mobile and steam what hell square. No switch, ps4 or xbox.

Better like that
If put in console
10 years later....you might not have the console or access to that digital game.
Pc, you'll have access on any computer forever lol
@@rodrigozbarros Nobody gives a single solitary dump about extra dungeons. They just want to play the games on a modern console with the bugs fixed with music and graphics that keep the same feel as the original. They want updated ports, not remakes. That seems like what these are, but the price and lack of console release is stupid.
I'm actually the guy who ripped the FF4 sprites from the trailer and made the initial comparison, RPG Site asked if they could use my sprites for a further comparison and I agreed, hence why if you look closely, the FF4 sprites on the sheet are much sharper than the other rips.
I'd rather see an Octopath Traveler Style classic FF Game remake than just these rehash of sprites.
I'm happy to get faithful 16/9 HD classic ports, here. They did a perfect job with romancing SaGa 3 for example. I really have no idea why they're not doing the same with FF.
What would be my ultimate dream would be a remake of FF VI with a cel shaded look based on Yoshitaka Amano's artwork. My God, it would be beautiful.
@@TheRelen222 YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!
I want it! I want a remake with graphic engine like in Ori and the Blind Forest, as in, that's how i want it to be animated like, but everything would be drawn in Amano Style.
Ditto-- looking at these games and the Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD remake just makes me sigh in dismay. About the only game i think really benefits from this pixel remaster is FF3 NES as it never had a redone sprite-based remaster. There's the 3D version for the DS/PC/Mobile but the 2D sprites have a certain charm to them, and it's nice to see them cleaned up a bit and in HD for people to experience the 2D version for the first time, with improved visuals. It's a nice option, but the other games already have much better looking alternatives, with the exception of FFV/VI I guess. People don't really like the water color/pastel sort of look of the current PC versions. FF1, 2, and 4 have very nice looking PS1 and PSP remakes, however, and with extra content. All of that is gone in these 'pixel perfect' versions.
@@ryker3508 Previous Steam versions of FFV and FFVI have additional content, so i prefer them.
4:58 At first before I was like "what, I don't see anything really wrong with it, it looks fine"
Then he started reworking it and I was "OH WAIT that's WAY better how the--?"
lol, it's not "way better" at all. Just added some random shading to it that stops making sense once anyone with a functioning brain understands that there's no definitive lightsource, and thus it looks unbelievably stupid to give character sheens and shadows. This looks even stupider inside a cave. It takes a little bit of skill to edit someone else's hardworked sprite -- but it takes intelligence, forethought and talent to actually create.
@@mamayareborn Lack of shading is just as bad, if not worse. If a game doesn't have dynamic shading, you need to make something that won't make perfect sense everywhere, but still looks decent. The ones in the pixel remaster don't make sense in a dark environment because of how bright they are, and also don't make sense in well-lit environments because there are no shadows. Pointing out that a game without dynamic shading will have inconsistencies in lighting is not an intelligent or insightful observation. Keep clutching those pearls though.
From what I saw of the FF1 gameplay, it looks even worse in game, because you have the contrasting art style of the sprites with the very detailed backgrounds along with the hyper realistic water physics. Nothing goes together. It feels like an asset flip, or someone's first fangame where they just shove together different sprites from entirely different games.
The water for sure is a real issue. It uses modern rendering techniques and won't show up on some machines.
The issue is that it doesn't "match" with the style of any of the original art.
Yeah, to be honest the water fits much more with the more realistic approach of the PSP port.
Exactly What I thought.
Summarizing it looks like MUGEN
The PSP remakes look the best (1, 2, 4)
Hell yeah, brotha! They abandoned a worthy opportunity to beautifully remaster the first six and make definitive versions of each, but took this stupid, long winded back step, f*ck'n Square!
And IOS 5 and 6 looked similar tho 1,2 and 4 for PSP as well... As far as people think they are awful, I think they put more life in the characters. That Terra shown in 0:38 for me was the best. It's a shame they had removed it from the stores.
I wish 5 and 6 had the gorgeous PSP treatment they deserved, instead of the hideous IOS sprites
@@lowhp_comic Seriously, each PSP version got better and better. I can only image how awesome it would have gotten with Final Fantasy VI. Square enjoys toying with us..
The PSP collection for 4 set the example they should have followed if they wanted to make the "definitive" version of each game. Absolutely all 2D material related to the game (bonus dungeons, after years, artwork, and music player) with beautiful but faithfully redone spritework. The music is about the only thing the pixel remasters have going for them over this. Hopefully we'll see some decent mods!
I don’t like that you made the fighter pink with blonde hair instead of red with brown hair, but I like the shading and depth you added to the characters, I hope a mod that revamps the sprites but still sticks true to the original sprites could be made in the community when this remaster releases.
I love when a content creator has the skill to attempt improvements. Naysaying is fairly easy; improving is far more difficult. You do the difficult thing, and that deserves praise. Good on ya.
It's not difficult to edit a sprite. It's difficult to redraw by hand 6 entire long-form RPGs entirely made OF sprites in a short timespan. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't an improvement on anything, it's virtual grafitti. The original author of the original sprite was asked to hand-draw all of the games again, and so she did. I value her work above and beyond any random naysaying youtuber nobody.
@@mamayareborn Okay, but if the work is bad then it doesn't deserve to be valued. It's the painful truth that Square Enix hired an amateur pixel artist because they really don't care about the quality of these products, same thing with the mobile versions of V and VI. If the company is going to be lazy and put out a shitty product then you shouldn't be celebrating that. They did a bad job and we should call them out on doing a bad job.
I would desire for them to allow you switch between the ability to view, play and hear the games as once they were, or the new style.
The same obviously goes with any additional content that was not in the original versions.
I think Square did this with Secret of Nana in the form of the mini map is the OG game map.
Also, Wonderboy III did this perfectly.
I appreciate that you credit the music picks in the description. Keep it up!
Great video overall and while I'd agree, I think you're missing one potential motivation for the odd gradient choice in the sprites (or you just skipped over it too fast):
To me, these sprites with their colors feel as if they tried to imitate the color bleeding that was typical for the dots on a CRT screen, which is no longer the case on modern displays due to the technology and their pixel size. I'm sure you know what I mean, just mentioning it for those reading this: On a CRT you couldn't turn the electron beam on/off perfectly per pixel, so rather than having stark contrasts between bright and dark pixels, you'd often see some bleeding between them, so the overall brightness would essentially be a blend between neighboring pixels.
As an example, look at 2:25 and compare the eyes of the characters. When considering left to right (and right to left), the direction the electron beam would have moved, you've got bright, dark, bright. As such, a CRT wouldn't show that dark pixel as dark as it should and instead the brighter colors would bleed into it, causing the eyes to be quite a bit brighter than in the raw image. And that's something the reworked sprites indeed imitate. Similar can be said about gradients, like the hair, the blade, etc. They clearly changed a bit more in some cases, sometimes neglecting old sprite size limitations, etc. but think that's an important detail one shouldn't ignore.
I - and probably many others - never had an issue with the sprite-work in the previous rereleases (like FF6), but with the inconsistent and forced filters being applied.
Totally agree, it is obviously what they tried to recreate. But I think the ultimately failed. It is way too exagerated, unless you had a very bad CRT it wouldn't look like that. On the other hand, I think a lot of people don't like it because they remember or compare these games from emulation/virtual consoles/snes classic, etc which are displayed on modern screens and they surely think it looks different now.
They should have taken the PSP graphics they made for ff1 2 and 4
Personally I'm a huge fan of the ps1 looks, they look a bit old now but there is still some great sprites into thoses
@@Sanshpixel they want you to pay for a downgrade mate. And a efty price.
I really want to play ff2 with the psp graphics, but the Appstore version seems to be extremely buggy :(
Yes. YES. I have no idea why that isn’t the aesthetic they’ve used for all of their retro remakes
@UCymUpWzclfUQqf0DptcLt1w for 3 as well. Let's be honnest, they look dumb.
Honestly, the sprites look pretty good! A lot better than the "angry, puffed out chest" from those mobile ports.
Now if only they released to console...
I think the worst part is the font they're using, it's no lt pixellated at all.
The good thing about these... uh, "pixel remasters"... Is that the enemies will get more detailed sprites. I'm especially looking forward for the updated enemy sprites from FF3!
They're really not more detailed than the PSP sprites, or even the iOS sprites for 5/6 (while character sprites were lame, enemy sprites were nice).
@@stardustsdd Huh, you are right... The enemies' sprites look like they came out of the GBA games... Geez, they couldn't even give us detailed enemy sprites like FF5/6. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't because all of FF3's enemies already got 16-bit sprites in Record Keeper.
i'm more happy with the sprites they did than the ones you came up with tbh
Same
Same, those looked awful
They should have just remade them like the PSP remakes of 1, 2 and 4.
But then it'll be "not pixel" remaster... PSP remakes aren't pixel-based, they're just 2D.
@@ilhamuharam it's still pixel. Anything 2d is still pixel based. PSP resolution is low so if you blow it up to 4k then you'll see the pixels better.
god those were bad, why would you want that?
Downgrade? These sprites are exactly the same as the old ones. How's that any better? PSP versions are way better, audio too.
@Tom Ffrench yeah so what's the point of these? Either go full Remake, HD2D or PSP style.
These new sprites are hideous.
Final Fantasy Record Keeper uses essentially the same sprites from the 2D games, and they look great.
There's no excuse for what they did to these characters.
It was a shameless cashgrab, plain and simple.
Cashgrab? They actually put work into this game to make it worse. As they did with the iOS version. This isn't even a Chrono Trigger situation where they just blew everything up. Someone in charge of pixel rereleases for Final Fantasy is just fucked in the head because none of their other games have this problem where they waste money to make things worse.
Record Keeper made sprites for every game not 16-bit and they look great.
@@BlueLightningSky Yeah Squaresoft died when Enix bought them.
The IOS sprites were bad, but I'm not seeing why people don't like the pixel remaster sprites.
Love the editing! I still feel conflicted by the new sprites tho, especially FFVI which I love the esthetics way back. Btw what application are you using for those pixel arts ?
Ooh that book looks pretty sweet. Might need to pick that up.
I liked how the PSP remakes handled the sprites, I haven't compared how they look next to the Steam remakes though
They look a lot better.
The gameplay tweaks of the pixel remasters are unparalleled tho
@@beegyoshi8401 For 2 and 3? Yes. For all the others? No. 1 PSP is still the better version. 4 PSP and DS have their major differences with PSP being based off of the GBA version, and DS being made to be a challenge for those already familiar with FF4. 5 and 6. Their GBA counterparts didn't really add much of worth, especially in 6's case since the GBA music for it sounds down right awful. 5 on the other hand looks a lot better on GBA than the pixel remaster, and a lot of the music in both GBA and Pixel Remaster are hit or miss compared to the SNES version.
@@Blackpapalink 1's pixel remaster literally added the auto battle feature and a mini map plus it halved the cost of items and lowered the encounter rate. You have any idea how big that is? 1's caves are literally a nightmare to go through since they are so big with that high encounter rate and confusing layouts. Grinding also became less of a pain. Not to mention the updated ost.
@@beegyoshi8401 1 was already easy as hell on PSP. I just did every battle and didn't need to grind at all. The music in pixel remaster is good, I'll give you that. But I find the extra content from Dawn of Souls to be just as if not better than the main game. Not to mention all the kick ass remixes the PSP version got. Going back to vancian-esque slot system limits magic to the point where using auto battle will quickly drain your resources unless you buy enough gear.
When they announced "pixel remasters", I was expecting a 2D/3D style like Octopath Traveler. But when I saw they were more-or-less HD color touch-ups, it was disappointing. Octopath Traveler was great and opened the door to so much potential, and yet they're choosing to do precisely nothing with it. It's such a waste.
The reason they aren't doing Octopath Traveler style is because they'd have to completely start from scratch since the world is 3D instead of 2D. With this they just have to change the sprites (2D models) and maybe change a little bit of code in the original. To do an Octopath Traveler style they would have to recreate the entire game in a 3D engine and make 3D models for a lot of the world pieces. They're also doing this treatment for 6 games instead of just one so it would've been a ton of work, and it seems like the pixel remasters are trying to be remasters of the original versions of those games instead of making another version.
@@Madmonkeman they're asking a lot for these games, it makes sense for us to ask a lot of them as well. In terms of fluidity of gameplay I appreciate what they did but in terms of graphics the psp version is clearly superior.
@@chicoti3 I 100% agree. PSP visuals are so much better! I only got the pixel remasters for 1 and 2 so I can play them on PC (already had 1 and 2 on my phone with the PSP visuals). But I think they accomplished the goal they were going for since they wanted these to feel as close to the *original* releases as possible with some visual upgrades. The only thing is, the originals aren't the best versions so they're definitely not for everyone. I'll only get 5 and 6 if I like the visuals more than the 2013 and 2014 versions. Won't be getting 3 and 4 because I already have the 3D versions and think those look better.
@@Madmonkeman I wouldn't recommend getting 4, 5 or 6 because they aren't famicom games, they're super famicom games, so the visuals they're going with (which are basically the same as these ones) make them look like famicom games so it's almost like a downgrade.
Did you see the comparison with the pixelart for locke? It looks like they made him a famicom character
@@chicoti3 I did see that comparison and I think the newer version does look better than the original but I'm not sure if I like it more than the 2014 version.
The PSP remakes of 1,2 and 4 should have been the goal. These remasters are huge downgrades. The GBA Remakes were great too. People only complained about the blurry sprites of 5 and 6, not the whole classic series.
The psp version are the absolute best
I have been shouting this exact same thing from the rooftops of every twitter post they make. How could they get it so right in 2007 - 2011/12 and so WRONG in 2013 and currentyear? If there's ever been an example of regression it's this, right here.
@@GabTheDrummer They should be, but 1 & 2 have some difficulty issues from what I've heard
Pretty hard to argue that IV isn't though
Awesome! I love seeing pixel artwork, and I love Final Fantasy! Your cleanup's look great!
SNES and the GBA sprites look a ton better imo
Man, nice video, you really handled the topic! Glad to see a pixel-artist on RUclips that takes display into consideration.
Looking foward for more videos.
Display argument is kinda invalid, as CRTs, especially Arcade monitors, PVMs and artist quality PC monitors all display the sprites the same. Comparing a phone camera photo of a low-grade uncalibrated consumer TV obviously connected over Composite video and not S-Video or RGB is not even close to fair.

Would be cool if someone made these sprites similar to yours as a mod.
I enjoy this video: I disagree because I like the color pop in the new sprites but I enjoy how you explained the other perspective and I can understand the criticism now . Where you really got me is when you went a step further to show how you would prefer it to look, I think I do prefer your version with a smaller palette and higher contrast shading 😅
I got this video recommended before and didn't click because I assumed it was going to be 'complaining' about the different style, but I appreciate that its an explanation of different preferences. I just subscribed, and wish you well on your journey Sansh 😄
Moonbowmusicmovie's version of Legend of the Eternal Wind is probably my favorite version of the song beside the one used for the opening of the 3D remake. Thank you!
Forgive me if this is dumb, but is there any mod/hack where the black mage isn't hooded with yellow eyes?
I was thinking of reworking the pixel remaster sprites myself, but Is it possible to modify the game to use our reworked sprites?
Admittedly the brighter colors reminds me of the old GBA ports of the games, considering the original GBA had no lit screen, and darker games, such as Castlevania: Circle of the Moon made it a challenge to see what was going on... but there's little reason to keep those brighter palettes since screen lighting is the norm for every bit of technology today.
The sprites don't look too bad, as everyone agrees, it's far better than those horrid iOS sprites from before. Though I will agree "less is more" and a lot of the added colors kinda muddy the character designs a little... just looking at Locke's hair reminds me of how Minecraft has the player character Steve with that fuzzy, old TV static effect all over his body... you can't tell how the hair is supposed to be combed and they even removed the shiny highlights to not make the character look TOO dull. The omission of that highlight effect is the MOST notable on Cecil's helmet.
Again, it's not bad, as it could be worse... bit of a shame they didn't go with the level of quality for the PSP version, but at least the sprites still look recognizable instead of the flat wooden mannequins of before.
The worst parte of those games is the user interface, not the pixel art.
What software was he using at the end? I'm a novice at pixel art but I want to get better. I've been using GraphicsGale and occasionally GIMP.
It looked like Aseprite to me, but the software doesn't matter as a much your skill does.
What program did you use for redesigning the sprites?
That was very informative and also sort of confirmed what I was fretting with any kind of "pixel remaster". But may I be so bold as to ask what program it is you use in the video for the drawing? It looks ideal for such a task!
They're using Aseprite.
@@JeremyMcElhone Thank you for the info! :)
After seeing this thing I just think SQEX need to love their own games much more like the fan who playing this series for many years. Just that!
A lot of entertainment creators tend not to hold their creations as sacredly as their fans do. There's always an urge if you see a "flaw" in an earlier title to go back and polish it up, or update an old title to fit current industry standards, which often creates more flaws than it fixes, especially if the creator can't remember the frame of mind they were in when creating the original material. George Lucas is the perfect example of this; with new technology he's touched up his old films to the point that some scenes are extremely busy, also occasionally removing cool lines improvised by the actors in favor of the flatter lines they were scripted to say or changing characters' early actions to be in line with their later behavior which cheapens their character arcs.
Fans don't value anything in their games, please.
They only value the shallow things, absolutely nothing else. If anything, they love media less than corporations, and that's a tough feat.
They're loving the original one tho. They're never disappoint us in original one. But FANS! fans always bark about making a remake remaster etc, like hello it requires a LOT more work + sqex said that they're missing a lot of older games' original data. So, it's the same as making a new game. In this case, making a new game is better rather than remastering an old game.
@@theinvisibleskulk4563 I imagine that very few (if any) of the original creators are still working at Square Enix, and even if they are they're probably not in the department that was in charge of the remasters. People seem to forget that companies are not singular entities, they're a conglomeration of people that change over time.
@@RialuCaos Very good point, but that only makes it worse. If one person can have as little regard as George Lucas for the integrity of their work, imagine how much worse it is when people who weren't even working for the brand owner at the time the original work came out get so much creative control. To my example about George Lucas, see Disney Star Wars. Sure, Mr. Lucas brought us the special editions and did all he could to erase the old versions, but at least he kept the plot, physics, metaphysics, status quo, and everyone's character traits and abilities completely internally consistent for all six movies he supervised and multiple multimedia projects he oversaw closely. That's pretty hard to do without close creative oversight by a single person. Now under Disney's control, almost none of that is consistent at all between any two movies, and there are even inconsistencies within movies and TV shows.
i didnt grow up with games like ff2 or ff6, but i did grow up with ff1 and personally i like the new sprites. and this new remasters is giving me the chance to go back to the final fantasy's i missed and play them for the first time, so im playing ff2 for the first time, and i dont have a problem with thier sprites.
Why they didn't use the modern sprite from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (IOS/Android)
"Often in pixelart, less is more"
Me: *adding my 30th shade to my pixelart*
How many colors did you use in the altered sprites?
People missed the point that Pixel Remaster is not meant to redesign the pixels too much. If they did that it will be another Remake and not a Remaster. It's meant to be as close to the original as possible. They already made another pixels in GBA, PSP and etc... The Pixel Remaster has another purpose.
I enjoyed your effort to redraw the pixels but I think I stay with the ones made by Shibuya Kazuko, who actually did the original ones back then and returned to design the Pixel Remaster.
artistic choice for Pixel Remaster is literally best of two worlds FF1-3 on NES and FF4-6 on SNES
i can see why FF4-6(or PS1/PSP FF1-2 remakes) fans disliked PR but they literally missed the point of PR. i guess its easy to do when when you blinded by nostalgia
Oh MAN! Your re-done sprites look AMAZING! I hope the Steam version at least has mod support so we can import great sprites like the on you made. I know it would be a HUGE task, but if you could, I would LOVE to see your renditions of every character from 1-6 and all their different poses!
I love how you used LESS colors in Locke, and still it looks way more colorful than the remake one (in a good way)
Just goes to show how important pixel shading is
The monster sprites from the IOs remakes look phenomenal, but the character sprites... UGH...
Character portraits were amazing too. Shame the character sprites and Audi were such garbage. And some of the backgrounds were too bright (like the snow in Narshe).
When this was announced I really thought that this will going to be a Octopath Traveller style remaster. But I'm a fool. This is Square Enix in 2021.
Im sorry but that ff 1 sprite you “improved” is godawful☠️
The ff5 one is great, and I think that the ff1 when looked in the smaller screen where it compares with the official one is an interesting blend of original NES and PSP styles
The warrior doesn't look good to me either imo, i think its mostly the color choice for me. With ff6 he didn't really improve it for me, locke needed to have darker shadings and the green just made it more colorful. The ff5 one looks fantastic.
I overall liked the video tho
really is a situation of "your design looks like shit, let me do it better" and makes it look even worse, not sure what the guy in this video was trying to accomplish... but he went further backwards than forwards.
I really enjoyed your recolour of these sprites. FF6 is one of my favourite retro games and I felt the new sprites lacked in contrast as a result of using gradients with too many colours. Also, I think the new colour choices don't reflect the original tone of the game.
Love your work and excellent pixel art breakdown!
I agree with everything mentioned in the video. The grittiness and the lack of saturation in the sprites and environment really adds to the steampunk setting the original game focuses on. The medium and execution really matters as well when it comes to experiencing FFVI for the first time. Dancing Mad on the SNES heightened my passion for music by an insane amount, and I don't know how it would be like had I experienced that on the GBA first-hand. I also hope they add a hard mode as I do find the game easy nowadays, knowing the quirks.
5:55 - So that color, which in hex I believe is #D847C0, is a shade of magenta. This was generally avoided back in the day for two reasons: It's an unnatural color...an optical illusion generated by monitors, and it especially became avoided starting in the mid 90's when magenta became the transparent color. I know that it's a bit off from pure magenta, but it was close enough (despite being mathematically way off) to still give me pause.
Why Cecil Knight sprite on 4 looks so off? Something about his leg looks off
Why not make it HD-2D like Octopath traveler? They already did it in Dragon Quest, why not invest doing all HD-2D for Final Fantasy 1-6, surely they will earn more money from this.
I guess SE thinks invest in the old class FFs is a big risk. They can't sell it for $60
Well, i don't want any game to have the same look as Octopath.

@@DARS_04 Guess it depends.
thanks. great explanation from a sprite artist perspective. your edits make them look much better. nowhere as flat as the ones in the trailer - i agree with the colors too. less is more.
They're supposed to look flat. You didn't see pixels on old CRT TVs. The dark pixels and light pixels in their hair were meant to blur together to form a single color for the hair. The new pixel designs are supposed to look on LCD screens how the old sprites looked on CRT screens. This guy actually has no idea what he's talking about.
Oh, I don't get it? "Less is more" but he did recolor the sprites with more shading?
@@ilhamuharam the official sprites use a lot of small pops of different colors that do almost nothing to the sprites because they're so small. his recolors uses more gradient, but appears to use less "distinct" colors in all. i also think some of the gradient tones are the exact same color (hex). and its subtle but you can see how it less flat.
but all in all it might not matter because in the grand scheme of things the sprites aren't meant to be viewed this enlarged and when used in motion won't be as noticeable i think
@@ericstaples7220 absolutely. It's all about how they wanted them to look, flat like they looked back then. Not 3D. Also nothing is wrong in pixel art when the sprites are clear and recognisable. It's all about style and personal preference.
The psp version of FF1 is the best looking version
You have to try making your new sprites available for a mod. I might get the versions of 5 and 6 if only they had decent looking sprites.
I personally really dig it. I’d like it better if it went for a more Octopath look, but it’s good for what it is.
What program are you using to edit sprites?
i really like your new sprites but i feel like there is something off with the palette/colors i wonder how it would look if you used the colors of the original snes sprites
Great work. Well done!
Great video! Although I don’t like the new versions, if you go back to the original concept designs for characters in Final Fantasy VI I think they look very similar, so that may have been what they were going for there.
I think the character pixel art from the IOS/Android previous remaster was really great, for me the real problem was the way that sprites were presented. Modding the pc version kinda corrects this and it looks great. uwu
Eh, the mobile version seemingly dumped a smoothing filter over the sprites and a lot of people, myself included, hate that. Pixel Sprites are supposed to have pixellation. You can't just dump a filter on it, or it will just look terrible.
Agreed, I like the old versions/mobile better than the pixel remasters.
I actually really like the pixel remaster versions, but yours are indeed an improvement. Are you planning on releasing a sprite mod for these remasters?
They hate it because they’re FF “fans” that will hate absolutely anything FF that’s thrown out. Even the original games in their original format.
So far the biggest disappointment is they change FF1 princess Sarah look, we already had Lenna as a pink haired princess, could’ve left Sarah with the teal color hair design
Sarah got her look updated many years ago. I remember her having pink hair already in the first theater rythm game
I actually like the new sprites in the pixel remaster... this is after the first three have been released and I've played them all - my only big complaint is about the text... it should have been done in a pixelated way but it looks like the text from the phone games...
I liked this video as well! Really well done and your redesigned redesigns were very good. I really liked the third one, the first looked really good "how you'd see it in game," but the close up I wasn't big on.
I'd like a mod pack of these reworked sprites for when ff4 comes out... hahh!
I like the way the characters look on the PSP versions the best.
Reminds me of some crap deviant art bs.
@@WhiteSupreme Then you have never looked at actual final fantasy artbooks because PSP sprites for all entries mimic exactly the way the designers envisioned them back then.
@@zander3100 That means nothing to me. Also with a simple "Final Fantasy IV concept art" search on Google you can see for yourself that you're wrong either way.
@@WhiteSupreme of course it wouldn't, I mean it was all documented via interviews and artbooks but what do I know eh? Then again you're not the developer of these games so whatever you say is irrelevant when most of the audience likes the style they went with already.
@@zander3100 Of course it was 😉😂
The full Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster bundle is also available for pre-order and is priced at $95.94. Individual games are priced between $11.99 and $17.99.
That’s not that expensive considering the alternative buying og copies would cost more.
Good job! i really liked your ideas, i prefer it but i'm not saying i don't like what SQENIX remake did. it's just your version is much better. do you think in the future players can change the files and use 3rd party sprites or files?
After playing a lot of games with Retroarch and CRT shaders, I cant play these remasters that dont have CRT Royale, idk if there's an injector for that, but the old TV look really does help these games.
I couldn’t have said it better myself less is more. A lot of modern Pixel artist could learn a lot from this video alone, great job! I’m sure there will be mod fees for the steam version just like the other PC releases of FF5 and 6 hopefully they see this video and reach out to you for advice or to help with the mods.
Great video! Loved your pixel edits!
When will the 4.5.6 be release? The 6th will be so epic.
A bundle of 1-6 was one of my biggest wants but *not like this*. I mean, 6 still looks fine so why is it so impossible to get a direct port?
@Tom Ffrench That's what I mean. Why not do a direct port of the original?
Is it the main thing I take issue with in the pixel remasters is the fact that as far as I'm aware it's missing the content of the later ports and they pulled the versions that had that content
I came here because I am in the middle of playing ffvi on my iPhone and started getting these weird notifications telling me they are going to stop selling it on the store just to come here and find out they are remastering it again 😂 thank you for making this video 🙏 i would love to see how it changes for the future
I have a hard time telling which one is yours and which is the old one at the end besides the fighter but I think I like the old ones better anyway assuming those are the top ones. I like the colors of the top ones more. Although I have never play Final Fantasy and have no idea who any of these characters are.
I'm not playing Final Fantasy 1-6 yet (except 3D version of Final Fantasy 3 & 4) so I can relate haha 😂, but yea I prefer the top one a.k.a remastered one too
The only thing I don't agree with your rework of the sprite from ff1 Wol is the hair color
I don't really mind about the sprite, but would it be better if all the games have FFVI styled sprites? i mean it's an iconic look for the series AND they already have a gallery of it in Final Fantasy Record Keeper (even post FFVI got the sprite treatement)
I hope they can see your video so they can adapt your recommendations.
I think I can sum up the issue regarding FF6: FF6 was stylized like an oil painting. A lot of rich, dark, often desaturated colors, with prnounced shadows and highlights. You can see it most clearly in the rerelease battle scenes. The enemies look mostly fine, that's because they've kept their deep darks and heavy shading. But the player sprites all look like cardboard cutouts. That's because they've been massively smoothed out and brightened, it's a very smooth gradient from light to dark hues which axed all the highlighting and shadows and makes them clash with the rest of the game's style. Even if nothing else, the shading on the player sprites is simply incorrect, they're far too brightly lit which is why they stand out like sore thumbs.
Nice video. I think the sprite from SQEX is quite let down , flat and low contrast. It’s not bad but should be a little bit more detail but still better much than FF5-6 in mobile version.
Also amazing work bro!
I did feel like the new sprites looked off somehow. Wasn't until I watched this that I realized why.
As far as I loved the sprites from PSP and old mobile versions, and knowing almost everyone hated them (I loved that Terra from IOS FFVI 2013 shown at 0:36 and 01:45 for me these were the best...), I don't really care about these sprites in pixel remaster. I only feel sad they are removing their old versions from store, and along with them all the extra content like dungeons and bosses that I really enjoyed to play back then.
Final Fantasy 6 has such beautiful sprite-work. I REALLY hope the remaster can match it.
685 subs?!? your content is fire
Your work is amazing!!
ピクセルリマスター版、のっぺりしてるのよね
色味は最近の流行としても、立体感がなく見えてしまう
yo, are you from the netherlands by any chance?
i Think that spite book is really cool. now if they could make one with all the Ogre Battle sprites i would be ecstatic
I was and I'm still fine with the sprites, at least it's not horrendous with 3 different styles and resolutions at the same time like some of the ports for both FF and DQ, but your demonstration clearly shows the potential that could've been exploited !
3:00 Am I the only one who thinks his right hand looks too big in the new sprite?
i personally loved how the black mage no longer had his hat after upgraded to wizard in ff1.
Just wanna say that your take on the sprites look amazing! What software did you use?
looks like a custom theme for aseprite
I can't understand why they didn't use the octopath traveler style beautiful art style for 2d sprite.
Actually, they working it with the dragon quest 3... It looks great!
I'm expecting 3D remake to these FF series. 😶
With high possibility, that shouldn't be happening with this remaster release...
