UPDATE 1.30.23: The Steam versions of all Pixel Remasters have been updated with the console version's changes! It's too soon to say they're 100% in parity but by looking at the patch notes they seem very close. At 10:06 "Modded" and "Vanilla" are swapped. Here is the mod to check out as well www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy5/mods/7
I wish they brought back the customizable menus. They used to let you recolor them for the SNES and GBA games, change the color gradients on the PS1 games, and let you change and alter background designs on the PSP versions, as well as on the SNES and GBA versions of FF6.
Highly meticulous, extremely organized, and very thorough. This was a great video with lots of information to one of my favorite video game series of all time. Thanks Austin! 🙂
I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the original video for it, but one issue with FF6 that I haven't seen discussed very much is that Shadow's dog, Interceptor, will never counterattack in the PR version. He'll show up to tank attacks, but while in the SNES version he would take nominal damage, in PR it always says miss and he never uses Takedown or Wild Fang. I only own the PC version, so I'm not sure if this bug is present in consoles as well. It's a shame because it means there's even less reason to use an already underused character.
@@LeeorVardi I've learnt that expecting even the bare minimum from Square Enix is a pointless endeavour. They gain no profit from fixing their broken games.
13:05 Alternatively for FFV, if you have it available, you can use the Return time spell or the Wonder Wand. In the PIXEL versions those Magic Pots ONLY ask for 1 Elixer and not 2 to 10 of them so you only need 5 Elixers to get rid of them in the Phoenix Tower I STILL had OVER 80 of them IN WORLD 1 of FF5.
I've also been patiently waiting for the console improvements to come to PC, and according to SteamDB, if you check the depots for each game there is a locked beta branch that's getting constantly updated, for over a few months now. So I believe it's only a matter of time.

Hoping they port the console features of the Pixel Remasters to PC and mobile. I really want the new console features and still play the games in ultrawide CinemaScope.
Pretty sure I saw a mod for ff1 pc that actually brings back the bonus dungeons and super bosses from the gba and psp versions. I haven’t installed it myself, I just saw it on a discord and nexus, but still looks rad.
Excellent video. I really Love these. The one thing not mentioned here is the updated magic spells for FFIV on the Console versions. The PC/Mobile REUSES the same PR spells from I, II, III, IV & V. Whereas the console versions updated the spells, most notably the Black Magic spells, to be more in line with the Original SNES FFIV version, along with a bit of a Pixel Remaster touch. This is by far my favorite and most requested update to come to the PC/Mobile versions.
@@Cute___E The console versions updated the spell animations for FFIV Pixel remaster. For example; the Fire, Fira, & Firaga spell, all look more like the original SNES versions of FFIV as oppose to reusing the same animations of Pixel Remaster from I, II, III, V, which they all reused the same animations for these spells unlike FF6 Pixel Remaster. They put more effort with the spells in FF6 pixel remaster, and they made sure it looks like an updated remaster version of the original FF6 instead of reusing the FFI, II, III, IV, & V Pixel Remasters (PC). This is big update that the console version received over the PC but no one talks about it.
@@rune9055tbf I wouldn’t mind the reused stuff for the Famicom era but 16 bit versions exist for I and II which makes it more stand out if anything I would say the PR spells is unique for III since it never got a 16bit version
For console, something I noticed about FFIV's slowdown in battle menus is that it does seem to be tied to how long the game has been running. Even if you idle it or put the console in to rest mode, the lag gets worse as time goes on. Fully closing the game and restarting it clears it up for a few hours. Even on Switch.
I'm really glad I waited until the console versions happened to get into the Pixel Remasters. Played all of them to completion on PS5 this summer in the run up to FFXVI and stuff like being able to increase EXP to like 4x made weapon leveling in FFII way less of a pain than the PSP version which was the only one I had experience with. Being able to disable encounters on the fly also made the gauntlet of Eureka and the Crystal Tower pretty painless and actually kind of enjoyable
@@veghesther3204 By following the old meme and not giving it a proper shot, you’re missing out. It’s better than 1 or 5 tbh. And it probably has the best story of the bunch, besides 6

Got bored and played through the entire original Final Fantasy 1 a few days ago, and was looking for info about the Pixel Remasters. Impeccable timing, I must say.
Was loving hearing the changes until the end when I heard that none of this was coming to the pc ports. Will probably finish 1's PR and wait for these changes to come to pc :(
Thanks for putting the triple buffer and v-sync option advice at the very start of the video, I came back and wasn't sure so decided to watch it all again, and only takes about 2m, so good thinking, thanks! These videos, I'm sure many people comment this, are often reference videos for different members of the community, so are often re-watched by the same people over time.
I'll be honest, the console updates for PC are one of the biggest things I've been waiting for so I can play through the series again. Until then, all I can do is wait...
I appreciate that you decided to re-visit the Pixel Remasters and go over all of the more recent updates. I wasn't aware that so many small aspects had been tweaked. While it's still not perfect, it's probably one of the most convenient ways to play the early FF entries at this point. Although the changes to FF2 won't stop me from beating my party members half to death to increase their HP!
15:25 - Awesome! The seamless music transitions in FF6's final battle was THE single most underappreciated part of the experience; amazing to see it restored! (I thought the PSX port of FF6 preserved it also, but for sure, no later ports did)
Ok I know it’s not FFVI but that definitely did not preserved in the FFBE Series Boss Battle Trial even then those trials did started out pretty nice being like the originals until Ultimatica was completely downgraded to a single phase
I'm still waiting for the PC patch of the console additions. I finished the older games (except II) before the console versions launched, but now I can't play VI without the patch. Playing these game in ultrawide is awesome!
I wish there was an interview somewhere asking why the port contents like bonus dungeons were cut. I imagine that it could be a purity-thing: the bonus dungeons in 1 was not balanced for the spell charge system, and they may just have wanted to preserve the originals and the originals alone, but it'd still be nice to just have An Official Reason, instead of simple speculation. As someone who played these games first on their NES / SNES versions it doesn't really affect my enjoyment personally, and I honestly didn't play all the ports so maybe the bonus content was poorly balanced and no great loss in the bigger picture... but it'd still be nice if it's fans got enough consideration to have their questions adressed, at the very least.
Yeah those game are really bad. Ive never been able to achieve smooth pacing in either of those games even with all the mods and fixes on the internet.@@mr_chere
What I’d like to see in a future update is a third “BGM Type” option for the NES trilogy, which are the old remixes from the versions released in the 2000s, hence “Old Arrangement” option.
That was a huge recommendation to fix the ff6 final battle music transition! I remember playing the ps1 and gba versions of ff6 and noticed it didn’t had it. After all these years I’m happy to hear it had the fix ff6 really deserved!
I don't understand how loading times on a 2D pixel game can be that long on the PS4 and Switch. It makes no sense, what the hell are you taking so long to load on a high speed internal storage for a console that has a CPU thousands of times more powerful and energy efficient than a SNES processor!?
I am also interested in the aspect ratio of each game. Specifically the modern releases. The Pixel Remasters all have their narrowest aspect ratio at 4:3 (1.33:1) and their widest at 21:9 (2.33:1). Any wider would be pillarboxed, and anything narrower than 4:3 would be letterboxed 16:9 (1.78:1). This also goes for the Final Fantasy III and IV 3D Remakes. They all have a base aspect ratio of 3:2 (1.50:1), and it is expanded either vertically (up to 4:3) or horizontally (up to 21:9). Final Fantasy IV: The After Years 3D only supports 16:9 on PC, and it is the widest aspect ratio on mobile. But narrower aspect ratios (specifically for tablets) expand the view vertically, up to 4:3. The old mobile releases of FF1, FF2 and FF6 are locked to 3:2 regardless of your device. For FF1 and FF2, the view is expanded vertically from PSP, but there are missing visual effects. FF5, however, as well as Dimensions, are in a 5:3 (1.66:1) aspect ratio. Also, I hope you cover Final Fantasy Dimensions, which runs on the same engine as the old mobile release of FF5 and is retroactively considered a classic FF game.
I think most of these fixes are good but I have to say I hate that Doogaze is now shown on the map, of course it is easier but it was such a surprise to stubble upon him randomly, this is a shame.
I thought the DS font mods for III and IV 3D no longer worked after the games were updated on Steam, if they do still work or there's a new workaround that's very good to know. The UI of both games on Steam is terrible compared to the DS versions (and PSP in III's case).
Ah FF4 DS, such a good game, they made the familiar enemy encounters more challenging and gave just enough variety with the augments. Grinding Pink Puffs with the combo Draw Attacks, Counter, Brace, Comet.
According to steam DB beta info, it does look like the PC patches indeed coming. Will you be able to do a new video for all the PC ports afterwards? Previous videos will be someone outdated
I don't really know anything about SteamDB so may I ask what in there is pointing towards possible patches? If they really are working on a new update that would be great.
I'm one of the people who just can't unsee the screen tearing/fps jank when you scroll the screen. I was hoping that this would be fixed for the console versions, but I noticed it instantly as soon as I was given control in FF4.
FF3's typeface has always been one of my favorites, I've been trying on and off for the longest time to get that typeface onto my phone or computer. It's just so pleasing to look at.
I just really wish 6 got to keep it's original darker look, I wouldn't mind if it were consistent but it's not because they kept the enemy sprites exactly the same so it's not just inaccurate to the original but it's clashing and looks bad. That's the one thing keeping me from going all in on 6 PR
Do you think it could be possible for mods to restore some of the bonus content the GBA-onward versions of the games had? It's still very frustrating to me that the pixel remasters delisted those versions and didn't have the bonus content.
Most likely in a year Square will release "DLC" for like $10 for each game that includes the bonus content and then release a "definitive edition" collection of all 6 games again but with the bonus content included 😄
Even if they did beating Omega/Shinryu even at lv 99 with ONLY 9 spell charges per spell would be complete HELL SINCE The GBA/PSP dungeon that had them is 40 floors long and WITH spell charges it would actually take more then 9 Invis/Protect spells on the ENTIRE party so that Omega and Shinryu go from Lethal damage to DOING less then 100 damage per turn. Same with Damage Omega's Defense is high enough it would practically take like 20 TEMPER spells on 1 party member to do good damage IE more then 100 per turn to it.
@@veghesther3204 ok, I can definitely allow that the Soul of Chaos dungeons in FFI were not designed for the original magic system, even with casting items to conserve charges. And 3 never had extra stuff in 2D versions. However, 2, 4, 5, and 6 have bonus content that’s well within what you can do with the base mechanics.
@@enlongjones2394 I'd say the biggest thing 2 needs for its bonus content to be implemented is spritework. One enemy, and one party member as Scott was never playable in the base game. And it's probably the best to implement as it's by far the least intrusive, as it was always a side thing that read a main game save anyway.
For comparison, when FFXII was released for Switch, it took a full year for the additions to that version to be ported to the PC version. Square tends to be slow with these sort of patches.
One issue with Final Fantasy V and VI Pixel Remaster is the washed out palette in the overworld, which was taken from the GBA versions. What led to that idea that the GBA display lacked a backlight.
I still don't understand why Square Enix didn't add (update) the QOL in the PC version from the console version. I know that modding is easy, but still quite stupid from them.
Wish the mods enabled more difficulty tweaking, too many of these games removed some of the challenge with the pixel remaster, and I’m not talking about the EXP stuff
I really hope they put in the additional content these games have gained over the years, like FF5 new dungeons and new jobs. But i doubt this will happen it
OMG NOW YOU CAN FINALLY, LIKE, LEGITIMATELY LEVEL UP YOUR SPELLS TO LEVEL 16 WITHOUT TAKING AN ABSOLUTE ETERNITY IN FF2 AND THEY EVEN RESTORED THE ORIGINAL FAMICOM OST AND EVEN REWORK THE MUSIC THAT WAS NOT IN THE ORIGINAL Goddamn now i should get the pixel remasters on the PS4 You know what would be, like, super cool? if the remake FF 7 8 9 and 10 but in the style of the pixel remasters A Final Fantasy 9 Pixel Remaster would legit be one of the best games in history
I'm playing it right now, and reading this I'm thinking about things like when you have to light certain candles to progress through a section, and how that would work in the snes type sprite style. I honestly would rather see them stop remaking things and make some new turn based jrpg games, myself.
The PSP Sprite Overhaul sequence in FF5 Mobile mods was reversed, the footage labelled Vanilla is actually the Modded version and vice versa. Some footage for PR Console is also actually from the PC version (I could tell due to the Xbox button prompts).
The FF5 thing is a good catch. Can you give me timecodes of when the PR Console and PC version are mixed up because I don't see that. If they're there I'll re-render
That PR Console/PC mixup is actually a mistake on my part. I thought the notification on the upper right describes which version is currently on-screen. It’s actually describing which game and which version is being discussed and compared.
Are there mods that would bring the added content from GBA ? This plus Pixel Remaster updated + visual mods would make the ultimate versions of those games.
It changes the balance of the game. Making everything auto target makes fights button mashers and it’s a feature of the game, and is thus designed around it.
I played the PR of 1, 2 and currently finishing 3. I've a SNES emulator lined up for 4 5 and 6, but would you guys suggest I go through with that, or do you think it'd be better to play them on Switch?
If you emulate, I’d recommend the GBA versions. They’re more complete, better translated (than originally), and were honestly far better remakes than PR. And PSP FFIV is still the definitive version.
Switch for sure, I recommend the playlist for all the different versions of these games on the channel as there are too many small changes added to the Pixel remaster to list here
FF4 = PSP FF5 = GBA FF6 = SNES (GBA has shite sound, overly bright graphics BUT gameplay fixes. Plus, I love the OG SNES translation, it has more character)
Hey, I’m sorry about dropping the ball with the chicken knife and not sending you the footage. I had a major life emergency and couldn’t do much of anything
One of these days, I hope the GBA content of FF6 will be back ported to the SNES version. Or ported forward to the pixel remaster. Especially since I can't find a download for the old PC version...

I just really wish 6 got to keep it's original darker look, I wouldn't mind if it were consistent but it's not because they kept the enemy sprites exactly the same so it's not just inaccurate to the original but it's clashing and looks bad. That's the one thing keeping me from going all in on 6 PR
You could just mod it to use the original sprites, it seems.
thank you thank you thank you for making this update🙏🙏🙏
was wishing the og video convered the console ports. now i have my wish
Hello one question
Were those improvements in the pixels of the protagonists also added to Final Fantasy 5 and 4?
Really, the biggest slap in the face is they still havent brought the console changes to PC. First people to support them still getting snubbed.
Impressively thorough. Thanks for the video
I wish we could get more jiggle physics in these pixel remakes
That would appear in a future version of Final Fantasy I-VI, being distinguished from Pixel Remaster, possibly Modern Remaster or HD-2D Remaster.
Did they fix the bug in FF6 where if you leave Albrook in the World of Ruin, you could accidentally return to the World of Balance?
I would say the Brave Exvius sprites lack shadows for some reason
These updates have been great.
What led to that idea that the GBA display lacked a backlight.
i regret buying the PC version. it makes me nauseous with the frame pacing
Now I want to play a few of these again.
That mod's a godsend.
16:06 Woah that's really a game changer.
I still don't understand why Square Enix didn't add (update) the QOL in the PC version from the console version. I know that modding is easy, but still quite stupid from them.
They just needed the bonus dungeons.....they would have all been perfect with the bonus dungeons.....
Can't believe they've forgotten about the PC versions
wait, you can turn off exp and gil gains in FF5 while multiplying ABP gain? THIS IS THE BEST RELEASE EVER
3:29 hey hey
How did Cecil get a lightsaber at 5:35? I'm assuming mods...but I have never seen or heard of that one.
Amazing video, you're the best. I prefer to play multi player so I do the PS1 version of FFV.
15:48 okay thank god, who knows why this is literally the first official time they've done this.
I wouldn't know aboot any of this...I only do physical and they aimed this game at scalpers.
yes been waiting for this update
Wish the mods enabled more difficulty tweaking, too many of these games removed some of the challenge with the pixel remaster, and I’m not talking about the EXP stuff
I just want the GBA content added man
$80 is fuckin hilarious
Did they add the booster’s to the steam version?
i never understood why people hate bilinear filtering. its what it actually looked like on any real console.... even on a modern TV.
Sadly the PC Steam version is still waiting months later for all these Updates the PS4 and Switch versions have
Modding here is insane!
I just want them to patch in the bonus content. That would make these the definitive versions to play.
The stutter during scrolling is so annoying. That's the biggest reason why I won't play these games. Mods can help, but they won't fix it entirely
Praying that modders can work their magic on Suikoden 1・2 "ReMESSter" as well.
I really hope they put in the additional content these games have gained over the years, like FF5 new dungeons and new jobs. But i doubt this will happen it
Yesssss i love this thank you so much
I still hate how the text just pop in and out.
Need to import a physical copy for Switch but it's like $80. Soon if the money is right I will be getting that physical copy.
OMG NOW YOU CAN FINALLY, LIKE, LEGITIMATELY LEVEL UP YOUR SPELLS TO LEVEL 16 WITHOUT TAKING AN ABSOLUTE ETERNITY IN FF2
AND THEY EVEN RESTORED THE ORIGINAL FAMICOM OST AND EVEN REWORK THE MUSIC THAT WAS NOT IN THE ORIGINAL
Goddamn now i should get the pixel remasters on the PS4
You know what would be, like, super cool?
if the remake FF 7 8 9 and 10 but in the style of the pixel remasters
A Final Fantasy 9 Pixel Remaster would legit be one of the best games in history
I'm playing it right now, and reading this I'm thinking about things like when you have to light certain candles to progress through a section, and how that would work in the snes type sprite style.
I honestly would rather see them stop remaking things and make some new turn based jrpg games, myself.
Have they finally added the missing frame to FFVI’s walk cycle?
I'm still waiting fir a definitive edition of FFVI, the lack of the extra content from the gba version still hurt the pixel edition for me.
Are there mods that would bring the added content from GBA ? This plus Pixel Remaster updated + visual mods would make the ultimate versions of those games.
Weird they didn’t keep the FF2 autotargeting thing, that felt like it was meant to be a QoL thing.
It changes the balance of the game. Making everything auto target makes fights button mashers and it’s a feature of the game, and is thus designed around it.
@@thomasffrench3639Is ok to be wrong.
@@sebastiankulche I’m factually correct. Whether it is a good creative choice is up for debate.
@@thomasffrench3639 You are factually dumb if you think something like that changes the game balance.
Switch for sure, I recommend the playlist for all the different versions of these games on the channel as there are too many small changes added to the Pixel remaster to list here
FF4 = PSP
FF5 = GBA
FF6 = SNES (GBA has shite sound, overly bright graphics BUT gameplay fixes. Plus, I love the OG SNES translation, it has more character)
Still hoping we will get the console patches soon. So annoying to not get the boosters.
Hey, I’m sorry about dropping the ball with the chicken knife and not sending you the footage. I had a major life emergency and couldn’t do much of anything
It needs better softening. It either super blurry or pixeled.
One of these days, I hope the GBA content of FF6 will be back ported to the SNES version. Or ported forward to the pixel remaster.
Especially since I can't find a download for the old PC version...
