It has some flaws, but Rebirth personifies exactly what it means when people say a game can be "magical" in my opinion. There were so many jaw dropping moments for me, like just walking around Cosmo Canyon and breathing in the atmosphere and music was a moment I'll never forget

I agree, my only issue was the multiverse, different timelines none sense. I mean with Remake ending, I thought it was gonna be minor changes… or atkeast things would happen in a different way.
But they went straight for certain decisions characters may or may not make would create another new timeline. An I was left just confused as fuk at the end.
Everything else was gold tho 💯 gameplay open world mini games it was just when near the end when it got convoluted.

I think if I didn't have experience with the OG game it could seem a bit meh. But maybe that's because this format of open world game has been over-done since the mid 2010's for someone who has played games that entire time, such as myself

As a near-40 year old man, I have to say I really like what they're doing with this Re Trilogy. If I can sum it up it's basically "same destination, different journey", and I find that fascinating. I love FFVII, it's my favorite, and I have faith in Part 3 after seeing this. It's not nearly as convoluted as people think (people also misunderstood Remake for the most part), just going unnecessarily hard into the whole narrative of FFVII. It's a love letter to FFVII basically, made for the fans, and to me, that's super awesome. They made me like these characters and this world even more than I already have. Not a replacement for the original, but a compliment to it basically.

It’s totally a love letter to original fans. So many little moments that stick out and just make happy. Like when cloud does that dolphin ride to get up on the platform and you see him crack a little smile when he gets up there - like he secretly had fun with it.
In the original at those parts I always just imagined cloud being grumpy and ‘not interested’ - but I feel like how they show those little moments in the remakes really adds to these characters and their personalities. You can tell Square really made this a passion project/love letter.

As a now 33 year-old who first played this "original" at 9 years old...i felt like this game did justice to the emotions i never thought a 9 year old could experience so early in life. I remember how i felt when i left midgar, when i reached the ranch, when i reached junon, when i crossed the ocean, and when i realized this game was more than any game i had ever played in my entire life (albeit 9 years).
This reimaging brings many of the same feelings i felt as that 9 year old. I've been telling many people who have their understandable beef with this game that i view the original as a novel, and we are just experiencing new adaptations.
If i want to play a full version of the original, then it's right there for me in thanks to the remastered version (my ps1 and ps2 broke when it came to playing cd-roms in high school. All i wanted was the ability to play the original) This is a wonderful adaptation to an even better overall story. Yes, i have my issues with the tone at times in rebirth, but overal, i love this game, I love this series, and i love the final fantasy IP. i do have my issues here and there, but to act as though the square brand needs to cater to me is selfish. Im an older fan now...make room for the new ones.
I can only hope they feel the same magic I felt as a child.

i am 3 years younger than ff7. the first ff i played was 9 when i was around 14 or so, and it was my favorite for a looonnng time; I played 7 but knowing most of the plot beats ahead of time i saw it as a great game but a tad overrated. however, the ad from japan that says ff7 is the memories you have with it is totally true. in the leadup to remake in 2020 it was on my radar but not a big deal since i didn't have a ps4, but a buddy at college who did was looking forward to it even though he had never played the original. when school locked down because of the pandemic and i went home, i convinced him to get the original on steam and stream it to the boys over discord where we could all watch together. eventually he beat it (getting bodied by a tonberry along the way) and when remake dropped I pulled up to his crib and we played the game on the couch. I remember being stunned by the attention to detail with the presentation of the game, down to the music and the way the cutscenes used the same camera angles as the original. it absolutely captivated my imagination in a way the original just didn't, and the ending had my brain whirring to see what would happen next. I have been waiting for rebirth ever since. fast forward to now and I bought a ps5 to play this game. because of some stuff in my personal life the themes about grief and memories have really resonated with me in a new way and I was every bit as captivated as it seems like people were in 1997 when this story was first told. the magic is most definitely still alive

With that being said, I still got hit pretty hard during that Aerith scene, and her looking at the Bronco flying away. I think they really did a good job with the characterization of the whole group, especially Aerith and Tifa, that it just hurts to see Tifa's reactions towards the end. And then there's Cloud. Completely mentally broken imo, and tbh, I really fear for the safety of the group with him in this condition. I have grown to love this cast of characters and I can't wait how it'll all turn out.

It's clear how much better than remake rebirth is when you look at what people are complaining about tbh...... In remake, the biggest complaints are entire chapters like the claw arm segment of chapter 8, the first and second sewer visit, the drum, etc. All long chapter problems.
In rebirth the biggest complaints I'm seeing are a couple skippable bad apples in the bunch of amazing side quests. Cloud not getting wet in water is one I saw a lot too. Rebirth is so amazing that the biggest most noticeable flaws are tiny unimportant things.... Of course people will complain about the story no matter what happens, but these are gameplay things.

One part I found interesting about the Final Fight was the way the First Phase with Jenova Lifebringer plays out. You start the fight with the sad theme playing and only 2 allies fighting with you, reminiscent to the OG fight where you could only have 3 people fight. However, no matter how fast you might take down Jenova's HP, she will always knock out your 2 allies from the fight.
When Jenova fires her lasers and rips a rift into the shadow your party rejoins you however their attitude doesn't match with how they should be feeling, they act more upbeat and jovial for a group who just saw one of their allies die. With that in mind, I think when the team comes back into the fight Cloud is actually fighting with the group where Aerith lived, hence they are fighting as if she is still alive.
Then when that phase ends Cloud disappears and I think he becomes the only one aware of the "Aerith Alive" reality, when we come back to Cloud's group later on I think that's the group from the Aerith's dead reality considering what Barret says at the start of the fight.
It was just an interesting observation I made when I was rewatching the scene, I don't think the fight is happening in a linear fashion, it is definitely switching between realities but I'm pretty sure we're also seeing our allies fight from 2 different realities.
There is also that strange disconnect when Cloud is with the group and Aerith wakes up, for some reason he's the only one left in the reality, which makes me wonder if during the 2nd phase of the Jenova Lifebringer fight, when the world is crumbling and they are jumping from platform to platform, the rest of the group ended up dying there. . . and Cloud was the only one to come out alive because he was the only one to go into the rift to save her, in which he's sent to fight Sephiroth but only awoken when Zack touches him.
It's definitely going to be interesting to see how they plan to roll things out when they start releasing teasers but man, 3-4 yrs before that is going to be such a pain.

@@captainpep3That's the same approach for KH story, the fans are mostly just waiting how crazier they can make the lore while being more hyped for the gameplay and i really don't like that this is what they made with FF7.
I like FF7R but at the same time i consider it inferior to the original since they really undermined what made it special (the themes, atmosphere and certain bits of the story that were worse on Remake due to the more Hollywood/Average Anime/KH approach they did on certain things) which is a shame since Remake is mostly better on everything, especially when it comes to the characters interactions and Gameplay, i really wish they never added the Whispers things and kept Sephiroth the way he was on the original only adding a *few* more than they did so far, or at very least, introduced him on Rebirth.
A 1:1 Story Remake with the gameplay changes could've easily been one of the best games of all time.

@@stampoulisrafael5262It's my opinion, 1997 FF7 is in my opinion a better game because i like the narrative and visuals of it more, if it wasn't for the Remake's questionable choices when dealing with Sephiroth's character, Whispers and the endings, it would've been better than the original for me, unfortunately Rebirth's ending made me see the original as better unless on Part 3 they pull up a extremely well thought and incredible story which i really doubt, with that said, Gameplay wise and obviously graphics wise, Remake is way better than the original.

I personally don't like multiverse stories when the different universes/timelines intersects and stuff. I feel it usually takes away the gravity and stake of any situation in the story because you get the feeling there's always a copout or solution in "another" timeline or universe.
I still like the game. It's fun and the side minigames really brought me back to the good old days of JRPGs in the early 2000s where the side stuff were fun. And I think the FF7 story is told much better in Rebirth than OG. But I feel the alternate timeline thing did not add anything to the story at all. It's so much more relatable when it's just a delusion in Cloud's head.

  • @cs8712
    @cs8712 7 месяцев назад +4

Loved OG, thought Rebirth was a 9/10
    My criticisms:
    1. Some disappointment with return to Nibelheim segment (unexplorable shinra mansion replaced by generic shinra basement areas, dragged out cait sith part, combination code puzzle absent in a game with 50 minigames. Overall could have been way better. Vincent battle was an amazing touch though)
    2. Can't return to Upper Junon outside of Ch 4 (I understand they didn't want to code an idle state for the entire town but it's a bummer)
    3. Too many identical tower/bus stop/mako spring experiences and too many chadley interruptions
    4. No quick materia character swaps and loadout saving
    5. Tonally much more upbeat from the original. I do prefer the darker and more depressing atmosphere of the original and thus the remakes feel lacking in some parts. For example, was expecting the prison desert to have the lonely/hopeless feeling here instead of a comedic road warrior styled place.
    6. Whiplash in moments where it should let you sit longer to absorb the weight of what happened. Dyne's death is the obvious example. Going from Jenova to Zack and Sephiroth at endgame is the other big one.
    7. Technical issues that ruin emotional moments. Allowing characters to comment as if in normal battle in the end Jenova fight was an awful oversight.
    8. Some convoluted storytelling in moments where I imagine new players won't have the patience to figure out what is happening

I finally beat the game a few days ago and this was a very nice trip down memory lane. I have not played the original since it originally came out and am pleasantly surprised to see so much of it faithfully recreated/expanded upon in Rebirth.
I'm on the side "this is a great game" but agree the timeline aspect is very confusing (made even more so from videos pointing out that there are as many as 6+ timelines actually seen in the game). I'm hoping they offer a satisfying explanation in part 3, but even if they don't there's no denying the gameplay, design, and acting continue to be superb and this will likely remain one of my top games ever.

Played the PS1 version as a kid and loved remake and rebirth. There are definitely reasons I can see for people not liking the changes, but I know as a kid the death scene hit me hard, and with these multiverse changes I thought I knew the whole game to just expect the death, then for a moment they got me and I believed it had changed just to have it ripped away again and it hit me in the feelings again. I personally am a fan of time/multiverse shenanigans in stories, so the changes are something I love assuming things tie up in the end. too many loose ends could hurt the third game, but I'm hoping there is a vision in place to tie it all together. Given how much I felt like a 9 year old again exploring the world and seeing some of my favorite characters fleshed out, I'm willing to wait and see and just enjoy what we have now without worrying about future execution.

As someone who played the OG as a kid, I love these new games. I will say I did get incredibly annoyed in sections of Rebirth (and remake) that were clearly there just to pad out game time. I would rather get the point, and have a shorter game, than do nonsense task that feel like a chore. But what makes me love the game is the story and camaraderie with you and your friends. It's easy to immerse yourself in this world and get attached to the characters, just like you do with people in reality. I found myself making certain choices with game characters just because I wanted the best outcome for them (just like I would with real friends). I kept reminding myself that how I treated people in game didn't actually matter because these are not real people haha. All in all I had a great time minus the filler tasks, and I am really looking forward to part 3. For those of you upset about the story changes, I would say you just need to look at this as a different game. Think of it as a "what if" game. If you still don't enjoy the game after separating this from the og, then you just don't like the game and that's ok!

Being able to experience the world and story like this was one of the most amazing video game experiences in my life. I never would have imagined that I'd see such a thing like this happen. Nearly everything was just how i would have wanted it to be. My only true complaint was everything that happened after the trials in the Temple. Things just carried on for too long and got weird. Aerith's death scene was a big miss for me, it was just taken over by Whsipers and then an overwhelming series of battles and multiverse stuff that by the time it's done it's just like, "oh yeah, Aerith died". She didn't even get to have the iconic funeral. We also didn't get to explore the Forgotten Capital. Nearly everything else in the game was fantastic, so it's hard to be too disappointed. The game took me 131 hours to finish and I had the best time seeing so many familiar places brought into a new life. This game really brought joy back into my life that I haven't felt in ages.

I DONT think Cloud is seeing a spirit form of Aerith.
I think he actually created a new timeline where she didn't die. If you go back and rewatch the moments after sephiroth's descending stab attack, it shows you his sword in the ground. Then it flashes quickly to another shot where you see the blood emerge. If you actually compare those two shots, they're 2 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. The sword is stuck in a different place in the ground AND at a completely different angle. To me that looks like they were showing us the 2 completely different outcomes of that event. It also explains why Cloud can see the tear in the sky but the others can't.
If that's what they're doing, it does seem like something which will naturally fit into Cloud's whole identity crisis that will happen quite soon into the third part.

I feel like the answer is that Cloud saved her in a new timeline but she still died in the Prime one that we play. Cloud knows this and will want it thus making him succumb to Sephiroth's will ("Let us defy Destiny together.") but he will ultimately have to accept that in his world Aerith died. I think we are going to go through the five stages of grief - right now Cloud is in denial so he repressed certain parts of Aerith's death that we didn't see yet. The Sephiroth clones will lead him to anger but Sephiroth's plan will lead to bargaining. Falling for Sephiroth's tricks will lead to depression along with knowing that Sephiroth's plan will probably bring Aerith to an end in every world (as she's a thorn in his side) which will be part of him being comatose. Tifa helping him bring his mind back in the Lifestream will probably go further by helping him deal with all of his regrets and lead him to acceptance that the Aerith of his world is dead and they'll keep the timelines separated.
Aerith will probably go to other timelines and attempt to get stronger to stop Meteor where she will most likely reunite with Zack and some Cetra thing will teach her Great Gospel that she will use on Cloud for the final fight at the Edge of Creation that leads to Cloud using Omnislash (as Cloud is invincible in that moment - an effect Great Gospel has).

    • @tallgeese3w
      @tallgeese3w 8 месяцев назад +6

Everyone is thinking this has something to do with different timelines but they're all wrong. What is one of the overall themes of ff7 and its media? The fallibility of memory. At the end of Advent Children Sephiroth says "I will never be JUST a memory". What is the LifeStream? According to Remake it is the collective memory of the planet. The ancients could communicate with that and the arbiters of fate ensured that the memory (lifestream is everything that was and is and will be) stayed accurate. Sephiroths "remnant" is attempting to rewrite the planets memory for some reason (presumably his final victory over cloud) after the party defeats the arbiter which appears to be trying to contain sephiroth meddling (he appears to have some measure of control over them) and after his defeat he explodes into a mass of them. If you get the cutscene with Aerith in remake she tells cloud not to fall in love with her because "it isnt real".
What i am trying to say is that the entire remake trilogy is taking place IN the lifestream. Its the memory of the planet itself being corrupted and changed by sephiroth thats why aerith who is part ancient is partially aware of whats going on. Its also why the "other timelines" exist because its the plants memory fucking up from the changes being made after the arbiter is destroyed. @@writer_man5318

I think the marsh Zolom moment in the og game was one of the most memorable moment in the entire game
It served 3 important purposes, 1st it was the game’s way to tell us ok now you are out in the open world, shit is wild and you may stumble onto ennemies much stronger than you so be careful where you step into
2nd, it was also a testimony of Sephiroth’s strength (which we still didn’t know much about at this point in the og game)
We’ve been warned about this extremely dangerous and powerful snake, and when we see it for the 1st time, it’s been completely annihilated by Sephiroth, seemingly effortlessly , which really made you feel how strong and terrifying Sephiroth was
And finally, later in the game after dozens of hours when you came back to the marshes and finally fought the snake, you actually wiped it out like it was nothing, and it really made you feel like so much had happened since you first were here, and you could really feel how strong you got and how long the journey has been, which really was a powerful feeling
Unfortunately the Rebirth sequence does none of that, and make it look and feel like your average action packed boss fight
    (I loved the game though)

Point 2 you mention seeing the snake completely annihilated by Sephiroth effortlessly - again, that happens in Rebirth and you literally see how effortless it is for him. So it still does that.
The only thing the game doesn't do is let you go back and fight it later, but it's entirely possible they'll put that in part 3. So it still does 2/3 of the purposes you mention, and might do the third later.

Love it, thank you for this video. FF7 was my first FF game. I was 16 years old. At first I wished the remakes were more like the original, but in order to make three seperate games with an ending story line to each, I think the developers came to the absolutely best conclusion so far. At least they can stick to the story line in the final game while still making sense of the two previous installments.

I really like what they've done with the "remake" in giving us a fan service filled pseudo-sequel. They were never going to recapture the exact magic and vibe that OG FF7 had when it first came out, and having recently replayed it for the first time in over 20yr it really is far too simplistic to have gotten away with just a graphical upgrade. The only sad thing is newcomers to the game are still missing out on that. Maybe once Part 3 is released they might give us a true remake since all the assets will have been made already. I'd be surprised if modders don't at least give it a go.

Rebirth (and Remake) are way more faithful than people give them credit for. Many of the "changes" are just expansions on the original that only add, not contradict. I'm one of those people who liked the ending. But my interpretation of it is different, I haven't watched any explanation videos yet. (SPOILERS AHEAD)
In that scene where he explains things he mentions that when fate is changed realities are split. His plan was to converge those realities to one. But then it became a question on if saving aerith or letting her die was good for the planet or not. I'm gonna say saving her would have helped. But letting her die would have aligned the realities and given sephiroth a chance to try things again and succeed completely with all the parameters familiar.
But instead it seems like cloud succeeded in saving aerith, so in the end there's no convergence of the realities. There's a reality where he fails, which is what we see mainly and it seems like what sephiroth intended for after he fails is still happening (which is why he's acting weird, and has the black materia), and a reality where he succeeded, and zack is alive cause it's not fixed.
In short, sephiroth (or maybe Aerith) is fucking with fate, and it's causing a lot of fuckery. And cloud managing to save aerith at least in one reality means the fuckery is not over.

It IS an emotional moment, it all has a lot of build up. It's a lot less okay that she dies. And that mentality is echoed in the conclusion of this.

Most of which aren't really that important, but are shown more so as an example of what Sepheroth is talking about when he explains timelines branching apart and eventually converging. Each timeline is distinct by it's breed of dog the Shinra propaganda dog is.
The timelines we see are as follows.
*Beagle Stamp* - The prime timeline that the main party exist in.
*Terrier Stamp* - The timeline where Zack is displaced into the end of Remake and rescues Aerith and Cloud. This Zack ultimately goes up Shinra tower.
*Pug Stamp* - Instead of going up Shinra tower, Zack goes to see Biggs at Reactor 6.
*Shiba Stamp* - Zack is indecisive and instead goes to the church where he encounters Sephiroth. This is the Zack who tumbles into the lifestream and finds his way into the prime timeline to fight alongside Cloud.
*Collie Stamp* - A version of Zack's timeline where Aerith and Cloud from the prime timeline manifest and go on a date in Sector 6.
5 timelines in total. But ultimately the Zack we fight alongside is the Shiba timeline version.

My point is that they did such an excellent job with rebirth and I would go as far as to say that this the best final fantasy game/also JRPG ever, and a lot of other people agree. I would just hate to see false or unnecessary criticism being sent to the developers and not having the next game be as large in scale because of the small but very vocal problems people may have about the open world or story. I’ve seen this happen where unnecessary criticism was being provided and so by the next game they scrap everything good and fun all together. FF 7 wasnt a part of my childhood but having played the original, crisis core reunion, remake and rebirth all for the first time as a 23 year old i think this is a good way to do a remake when the original is a completly different gameplay genre and is also equally (or honestly more) available other than pricing debates. Nothing will be safe or sure. Aerith literally died at the end, yet she also didn't die. Zack died in 1 more reality, while he's taking his fate in his hand in the other reality and again in another reality he meets Sephiroth In front of the church, while Aerith is pushing cloud through the rift. Aerith will live in Part 3, but probably won't be in the main universe we're playing and maybe all universes will have a reunion with the outcome of all characters surviving or even all characters dying. Zack also shouts to Cloud to save Aerith which would make no sense, if they just killed her off for good right afterwards.

I feel the entire tone and vibe of the journey was completely ruined, packed with filler, and jammed cringe and out of place characters into my experience with no option to opt out..
    Combat: Great
    Music: Amazing

    Story direction: Terrible..
Character interactions: Uncanny valley of dialogue, and everybody is flailing around like if they don't get a word in and animatedly spin, dip, twist, and gesture wildly they will literally die. About 75% of it is cringe and nobody seems to really acknowledge the severity of what they are doing, more like.. they are going on a vacation and seeing the sights.

The two key moments that define this game (and potentially the entire trilogy) for me is Aeriths performance and the scene at the very end where her "spirit" see them off. The steps to go between those moments are complex and cryptic and questionably presented, but its amazing. They make the sequence so needlessly complicated, and yet it immediately brings a starker display about what Aeriths motivations are and what her sacrifice is for.
Despite being one of my favorite FF iterations, FF7 is such a patchwork project that sells a rather contrived plot with vibes and art direction. Its paradoxically so technically boundary pushing and yet so derivative of the games that came before it, and one of the consequences is that they establish such great characters that get so few moments, and such awkward pacing. And the biggest victim of this is Aerith, a deep and complex character who unfortunately and ironic to her struggle, spends most of the game being motivation for other characters. This trilogy is about her, not specifically saving her because who knows where the hell this journey will end, but redeeming her. Letting the character behind so many 10 year olds first narative gut punch stand to scrutiny.
I mean its also a messy and catastrophic attempt to make Before Crisis, Crisis Core, First Soldier/Evercrisis, Dirge of Cerberus, and Advent Children into one consistent canon, but thats beside the point.
The bit where Cloud finds hes still in possession of the black materia and instinctually hides from the rest of the team is... Its just a cool set up. The entirety of the greater FF7 series does not know subtlety, even OG, and Im here for it.

I would definitely take Final Fantasy VII over Final Fantasy VII Rebirth due to my visual impairment. The text in Final Fantasy VII is a lot larger and easier for me to read compared to the Rebirth. I'm a PC player and I don't have an XBOX Series X or PlayStation 5. My 42" LG OLED TV is the upper limit in terms of screen size. For accessing the menus, I suppose I can buy a 55" or 65" OLED TV and stand up if I need to see what's on top of the screen.
I suppose I could set the game's resolution to 640x480 not only at the cost of bigger pixels, but at the cost of real estate and real estate in games do not matter if I cannot read the text. My LG 42" TV is arm-mounted to my desk and my TV feels heavy for my monitor mount, but it works out well since 2023. Oh well, since I don't care about voice acting at all and better graphics these day, I don't mind playing Final Fantasy VII just for the sake of my visual disability.
Update after I wrote my comment: Honestly, I suppose I don't mind bending my body forward and standing up a little just to read what's on the top of the screen just so I can strain myself a bit. That is, if I give Rebirth a chance... If the text gets smaller and smaller as resolution increases (7680x4320 or higher), I will have to squint my eyes just to read tiny fine little print... I mean, reading small text in games would be similar to reading fine print in a contract or a service that people would often ignore.
If you have fantastic eyesight, great. Just play Rebirth and sit about 15' away from an 85" TV. Lots of people took their perfect eyesight for granted these days.

Hearing redxiii talk in that voice made me shutter with anxiety. I absolutely hated that motorcycle guy in the first installment of the remake, he's not from the original. The specters are cringe to, I had to watch this to see if the game is worth playing. The original is my favorite game of all time and I grew up playing it, I'd rather not suffer the trauma of seeing the game destroyed further if I can avoid it LOL

I loved how you recapped the OG in this :)
I'd love a video of what happens next in the OG, since I can't remember and it's been 20+ years since I played.
That would get me excited for the next game. Feel free to guess how they'll reinterpret this in the next remake title.

I love that game but HATE the filler

Thats why they shouldnt have split it into 3 games. They could have still fleshed out and expanded on things that matter without adding all the unecessary filler if it was just one game. This way they have to force fillers to make the games articifially longer

Here's the difference. OG ff7 was deigned specifically to try to introduce jrpgs to western culture just like Final fantasy mystic quest (which failed). In order to appeal to as many people as possible, the story had to be as simple and easy as possible (a.k.a final fantasy for dummies 2.0) so that anyone could finish the game. This is why they added bonus content like knights of the round and ruby/emerald weapons. Rebirth didn't have to the same job as the original, so why make it the same?

The story was anything but simple. It was already convoluted; a wildly accepted consensus since its release. In fact, people asking for a remaking back in the day would often cite wanting the story to be cleaned up to make more sense (such as the party actually chasing Jenova, not Sephiroth - which confused most people).
And there's no evidence to suggest Square was trying to appeal to Western audiences with FF7. In fact, quite the opposite. The company was very insulated at that time, and did not respond to feedback or try to cater. Sakaguchi was concerned with making passion projects inspired by Dragon Quest, Studio Ghibli, and other influences. There's even a quote from sebsequent CEO, Yoichi Wada, that his biggest failing was trying to appeal to western audience with later entries in the series (ff13 onward), losing the original spirit of the company.

That's not even true. They didn't dumb down the FF7 plot for western audiences. FF7 was accessible sure, but nowhere near as simple as FF1-5 (in terms of plot).
