A broken game where you can build your characters anyway you want, go places you aren't meant to, and do things you aren't meant to, and make the world your oyster. Are we sure this isn't an Elder Scrolls game?
This game definitely has a lot in common with the Elder Scrolls! I don't think FF2 inspired Bethesda, but the game DID come out years before the first TES game 😀
This is a bit controversial, but FF2 was one of my favorite games ever, something about it was so addictive! Im really happy it got a new, improved version
My opinion of FF2 changed a LOT after I finally made the effort to play through the NES original from start to finish! It's an amazing game for its time, no wonder Japanese players remember it so fondly 😀
I love FF2 as well. I’m personally a fan of building my characters how I want too. 3 obviously introduced the better class system which was AMAZING but having the freedom to do what you want just was better. Which is why I love elder scrolls games.
@@Altercate Same. I played the hardcore original as a little kid and didn’t even know about abusing the progression system. I just got hooked when I realized you could sneak to the north a bit from the starting area and, if you were lucky, blast some high level turtles with ICE to get some crazy spells and gear right away. That always stuck with me.
@@OroborOSX11 That's awesome! 😀Honestly, the main thing that's changed is that gamers don't have as much patience nowadays. FF2 had a lot of design flaws but in 1988, what game didn't?
@@Altercate I think the stats and proficiency system themselves aren't bad and will make the freedom of building a party any way you want, but the balancing of monsters isn't good enough that you can stuck not improving anything at all in a while and the time waster dungeon design is horrible (Especially those goddamn trap rooms). Other than those FF2 is a fine game.
I spent a bit of time bashing on my characters early in the game to improve their HPs, maybe half an hour, but I realised later that it wasn't necessary. If you don't run out of the encounters, there are enough to make your party very strong, very fast.
I did the same thing... honestly that probably put me farther ahead of the curve than I expected lol about 9 hours in and I steam roll most stuff pretty easily
Yeah! I got carried away before going to fynn, in that open point and just kept wandering around gatrea, and to the NE where all the wererats, and tougher game are... I ended up with lvl 8 swords on firion, and level 3-4 magics too early.. so I am just steamrolling now, and I am loving it. Lol.
@@bobyoung8730 I did that on my way to Fynn too. The only thing is that I missed the blood sword in Paul's house. I was feeling down because of that. :-/ Don't miss it!!, it's before the cyclone.
I am so happy that stats don't debuff when another goes up. The freedom was there, but ultimately you would have to get railroaded into having a white mage, black mage, and fighter because of how Strength debuffed Intelligence, etc. But now it seems you can truly make hybrids and do whatever you want.
I started with Final Fantasy 7 as a kid in the 90s. Since then I've played 8, 10, 10-12, 13, 13-2, and 15. Now I'm finally going back and playing all the ones I missed. I loved playing FF1 last week and today I started FF2. Having a blast with it so far. So glad to see them releasing the games like this.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the games! I think these new versions make for a great balance - close to the original games but with lots of great quality of life improvements! 😀
@@Rosbergen80 Me too! They're going to be more divisive, I think, because the upgrade won't be as obvious as with the NES games. I hope they do a really good job!
We saw now 5 of 6 ff, and the last one releases tomorrow. I mean, they don't look like an octopath traveler or triangle strategy (although same company, but who cares), BUT with different remakes or remaster in mind, that have been released over the last year, we can be happy. Happy, that every ff from 1-6 now looks really great, and how it was meant to be, but never been possible because lack of technology (nes, snes). And you can take them with you if you buy steam deck
Great review. A lot of others seem to be skipping discussing FF2 when it comes to these remasters, and this really helped me determine if this is one that I want to pick up.
Glad I could help! Final Fantasy 2 has a really bad reputation, unfortunately. Undeservedly imo, especially since newer versions of the game are much more fun to play! 😀
This was the first time I played through FFII and I was surprised by how much I liked it. Know it was a lot easier than the original but I feel like the changes got to the core of what the devs were going for and cut a lot of the jankiness.
Part of me wonders if they had a bunch of teams working on the "pixel remake" series to help train newer employees in how to make games while also being able to re-sell the older games... again...
They just turned it into an easy grind with no balance. It would make sense in real life to lose stats in strength cause you love magic, it wasn't a negative you could make custom warriors. Having everyone at the same stats ruined the balance and specialty. Most players are not gonna spend time maxing out every stat before they win. So by the end of the game you had a class of different attributes. The nes system was better and this remaster should have a way to activate the original skill system. To me it sounds really boring to have a team who is good at all things.
Removing the chance that stats can lower made this a lot better for me. Also, not gaining weapon exp on weaker mobs made the grind moot as well. Overall for me, this pixel remaster of 2 is a great way to experience it for the first time or as a new playthrough with the QoL upgrades. Cheers!
I used to head to Mysidia very early on in the game and level up. You can get lucky and kill the bomb guys and once you do you start leveling up pretty quick.
"great way to play this important piece of JRPG history" is still the PSP version. Yes, PR made some improvements over NES, but PSP version is still the definitive version.
I played FF2 for the first time with this remaster. Simply put : I loved it. On top of the stroy, the music and the graphics, I in fact enjoyed the freedom given by the possiblities you have to break the game, just like in Tears of the Kingdom !
I just beat FF1 on NES (first and only FF game I've played so far!) and I'm planning on playing through 2-6's Pixel Remasters. Shame to miss out on all the bonus content in the PSP versions. Would love to see a video showing highlights from every game's remasters/missing content
For my money, I still find myself going back to the PSP version of FFII. I personally think it's the definitive way of playing the game. Soul of Rebirth and Arcane Labyrinth both added at least a handful more hours of fun, mindless gaming to my FFII experience, and the pixel "remaster" is not enough of an incentive for me to justify the cost of buying another version of the game.
while that is true about the psp version having more bonus content and i agree with that, i think the pixel remaster actually has.. better qol regarding FF2's weapon level/spell leveling system, which would mean it can actually have.. slightly more replayability over the psp version(ie its faster to get through the story). in FF2 psp it takes 100 weapon/spell uses per battle to level up once, which can be somewhat tedious. but.. in pixel remaster of FF2(which i did play a few days ago and watched.) they actually improved and made the leveling far less tedious, as its based on uses overall in the remaster and not uses per battle anymore, which i think is a very good change.
@@MLmaster135 that's not how spell and weapon levels work in the PSP version. I don't know the exact mechanics but it definitely doesn't require 100 attacks or spell casts per battle to level. I do know that each level requires more uses to level up and enemies have ranks that influence how much weapon or skill exp they get per use
@@killxtech1302 ah, thats deff true. for some reason it always took a long time to level up a weapon or spell when grinding against captains, was the slower grind i mentioned due to the captain in fynn's lower battle rank? if so then i apologize, i never knew that. i was wondering why i was gaining a lower amount of weapon/spell exp, but now i understand. it mustve been the captain in fynn's battle rank was lower then the level of the spell or weapon i was using(level 9-10). which would explain how i got more exp later on in the game
This is either my fourth favorite or fifth favorite game in the series so far depending on my mood, and my second favorite of the six in the announced pixel remaster set. Saga/Final Fantasy Legend II uses a similar stat growth system for two of its four races and that was the first Squaresoft RPG I played so I have fond memories of the system. Also I've always had a soft spot for rebellion against evil government or evil corporation plots as well as rebel protagonists or outlaw protagonists.
Thanks for sharing! You might already know this but the growth system for FF2 was designed by Akitoshi Kawazu who went on to create the SaGa series, so there's a definite connection there! 😀
Great review! Very informative. I actually like how this game looks and sounds (unlike other FF pixel remasters), and I would play it, but the lack of bonus content (the side story and dungeons) is what prevents me from buying it. They added other things from GBA and PSP version, why not the bonus content? I think I'll keep playing the PSP version. And you're right, this game is VERY confusing. Still trying to figure out the leveling system, and not die while exploring. It's fun, but it requires a lot of time and patience, which I have very little of lol.
The pixel remasters leveling is way different from what I played on the ps1, I remember when I equipped a weapon I’d miss almost half the time on ps1 but the PR is a lot more forgiving.
Yep! I'm not super familiar with the Origins version of the game, but as far as I understand it, it's a lot more faithful to the original game. And the Famicom version of FF2 is brutal! 😀
The PS 1 version still has many bugs and glitches that make it less bearable. The PSP, GBA, and PR versions are the only versions of FF 2 you should consider playing for streamlined gameplay and a good telling of its story. The only issue I can see with the pixel remaster is the lack of extra content, and no snowcraft mini game.
i really wish they pixelated the textboxes and menus as well. It just seems to jarring seeing the great pixel art with the characters and terrain next to the sleek modern looking menus/text
I was initially worried it would be TOO faithful to the original but I'm glad that isn't the case. As someone who probably won't be able to grab the PSP version I might buy this game.
I absolutely love FFII, it's probably my favorite of the NES era. And this remake is also easily the best looking out of the first 3 pixel remasters. Actually, playing 3 after this was a bit jarring, because its graphics are not up to par.
seeing how EXACTLY the same these 1st 3 look especially the menus makes me a bit worried for the next 3.... 4 and 5 did have a little bit of basic look and feel to them but are still deff a step up and ff6 with its mode 7 and amazing graphics will be a strong outright downgrade in the pixelremaster if they keep this same'ish look and feel trend from the 1st three games released.
I wonder if they intend to add the extras later down the line as DLC. I don't really care for the NES games' extras, but for FFIV and FFV I think the GBA's extra content really added to the game. FFIV got actual super bosses and character swapping, and FFV got 4 extra jobs and a much more efficient leveling area if you wanted to be level 99.
The extra jobs in FFV are only unlocked AFTER you beat all the other extra content which can only be done after you beat the game. So basically you get the jobs after you've done everything already. It's a total waste.
@@sor3999 you can get cannoneer, oracle, and gladiator before the interdimensional rift/n-zone by going to the entrance of the sealed temple even if you can’t go inside the actual dungeon yet. You get necromancer after beating enuo which still leaves omega mk ii, neo shinryu and cloister of the dead.
I had tried (ahem) translations of the Famicom version before, and could never get into it. This version has been a blast - I've got a dozen hours in, and I'm having a great time. Cheesing is no longer required. This is more like a Final Fantasy/Skyrim mash-up.
There are now 3 ways to play this game, and none fully trumps the others: NES with the Chaos Rush translation (the Demiforce translation is obsolete), GBA/PSP (PS1 the same as GBA with load times and without post-game) and the Pixel Remaster. Personally I *would* suggest this version only if you haven't played the GBA/PSP version already, but the music is just so fantastic (aside from one boss remix that came out underwhelming) One big downside of the pixel remaster in comparison to the PS1/GBA/PSP versions is the lack of the in-game cutscenes. For example in the NES version, when you fly into the cyclone, the first levels are literally a maze in the wind and then suddenly the latter levels are an actual castle hidden inside the cyclone. In PS1/GBA/PSP, you see a cutscene of your dragon flying into a floating fortress inside the cyclone, there's no longer a few levels literally made out of wind. In the Pixel Remaster there's no cutscene as in the NES, but no wind levels, you're immediately inside a fortress.
I originally played ff2 on mobile YEARS ago. I've never beaten the game but I put a ton of time into it and I love it. Even though I admit the leveling system seems broken in certain ways I still love it and love the concept that I believe the devs were trying to go for. So long story short it's definitely my favorite final fantasy game. I just got ff2 pixel remaster on psn today and sunk 8hrs into it almost without stopping. And I still love this game
I'm currently working on several videos about FF3! I finished my playthrough of the original Famicom version recently and have been playing the 3D remake and now the Pixel Remaster as well. I'll be doing a review of FF3 Pixel Remaster as soon as possible (sometime next week) and then my retrospective of the original FF3 is coming in the near future! 😀
@@Altercate cool. to me I feel FF3 is really underrated as I rather enjoyed the more simplistic story with the focus being more on exploring and saving the towns like in Dragon Quest games. And I really enjoyed the job system with the many different job classes. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them.
I don't have a lot of experience with this game, but I'm not sure I like it when they make the game easier... I mean if something was truly terrible, but just to make the game easier, I wish it could be turned off.
i grabbed the bundle. and i've already played ff2 for more than 2 hours and im enjoying it quite a bit. never really got to play this one much, so its nice to play an older style rpg that i dont already know everything. to me 10 bucks really isnt much, and if a game that is only 10 dollars can keep me entertained for more than a couple hours, thats good enough for me. with inflation out of control recently, 10 dollars is basically nothing at this point.
Glad to hear you're having fun with the game! Honestly, games are pretty cheap these days. I remember paying more than 100 dollars for a Super Nintendo game in Sweden back in the '90s... before inflation. 🤣
About to hop into this one again even after how many times I dissliked it on mobile back in the day. Let's go! I'm sure I will enjoy this verion since I can't run my ps1 verion.
Pros of note: 1) You can swap out field characters (meaning you aren't stuck walking around with Firion). That function wasn't in the other versions. 2) The soundtrack here is much better than the GBA/PSP versions. That said, I still despise the micro stutter and /or screen tearing. SE! Get your vsync nonsense sorted out. This issue plagues FF5, Romancing SaGa 2 + 3.
I'm not gonna lie I really did like final fantasy ii, I didn't know some people had an issue with it but I be lying to say going from FF1 to FF2 GBA, it was frustrating at first how the leveling up system work and not knowing I needed that bloodsword to take down the villain, imagine having to start all the way over again. Solid video!
I think the biggest flaw of the original version of FF2 is that the system is so poorly explained! I had a miserable experience early on but ended up addicted to the game towards the end 😅
Great reviews! Please review FF3. Ended up sticking with my GBA version for FF1&2 after watching your vid. But I've never played 3 so I am curious if I play this one or the 3D remake @PSP
Good ol' day when I had to pick an action and target, then cancel it as the command went to the next character just to spare me the time to grind mastery level 🤣
In the past, so many fans complaining about the HD remaster graphic being smoothed and blurred just like using 2x scaling on emulator. Now they delivered this Pixel remastered. Yeah they should adding dawn of souls story too. I really want to play the VI Pixel remastered on my android phone. That game should be an epic amazing pixel experience. No doubt!
Not sure if you're using keyboard or controller but you just push the key/button! (On my PS4 controller it was the Square button). You can activate it the moment the battle starts, or anytime during the battle, and you switch auto-battle on and off using the same key at any time. Hope that helps! 😀
No, there is no new content that's exclusive to this version. It's a pure remake of the original Famicom game, just with changes to the game engine, menu system, graphics, and music!
Not really! Dawn of Souls is a great version and has the better content. That said, this version IS imo the most enjoyable way to play the game, just because battles and menus run so smooth - plus the music is amazing 😀
And what about difficulty 1 remaster was easy, but the final boss is just a nightmare, kills everyone without a chance, as for me it was very strange to do this, but in this remaster with bosses and the same problem? Most are light and the final ones are furious now?
Greetings from Brazil (I wrote this words in brazilian portuguese, translate it and read 'em all). THANKS VERY MUCH!
It definitely had a lot of issues, especially in the original version! The remakes all play much smoother imo, I don't really have an issue with any of them (but it's still far from a perfect system) 😀
I think people that say this are lazy. It took me maybe 30 mins reading how the game works to really enjoy it. I think if the game has any flaw is that doing this is required for people to have a good time. You truly can build your characters any way you want within what's available. They delivered that on ancient hardware and limited toolsets. Every run I have makes me appreciate that even more.
You do not have to sit around attacking your own party in this. Your hp leveling is very forgiving in this version. You will have more hp than you know what to do with at the end.
I didn't experiment that much but it seems like the magic penalty is much less severe than in the original game. AFAIK this version handles it the same way as the GBA/PSP versions.
Haha true, I just find it an easy reference to get people in the right mindset! I mention how progressive this game was in my FF2 retrospective. When I did research for the video I had a hard time finding ANY game that did this kind of thing before FF2, actually...
As has every TES for decades. Should he have given Daggerfall as an example, would that satiate your pretentiousness? Since when is giving an easy to understand example a bad thing?
Other than the reworked music, the Pixel Remasters are blatant cash grabs. I bought the bundle and I am very underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy I to X, but with so many versions already available, it is shameful that the Pixel Remasters weren't stuffed to the gills with all the new PS1 and GBA added content, plus even more extras. FF6 teased some 2.5D but it only showed up in the opera scene. When are we, the fans, gonna get some true 3D remakes for 1,2 & 5? Where is the Prelude story for 6 that gives us Kefka's tragic turn to madness, Emperor Gestahl's conquest and a fleshed out love story between Maduin and Madeline? The long awaited Triple A Remake of FF6 in the vein of FF7R?
Great review! I've been LOVING the Pixel Remasters, and although I definitely feel like its easier, I actually really like that because I don't have to spend so much time grinding and such! I recently got covid and have had to stay home for the past 5 days, but its given me so much free time I finished up FFII as well as FFIII AND I went back and finished FFIII Remake and am currently working through FFIV Remake before FFIV Pixel Remaster comes out!
I've never played FF1 2 or 3, but I enjoyed the PSP version of FF4. Interested to go back to these older FF games. I like what they've done with the presentation, especially the amazing music!
@@Altercate ah yes, the game where the most powerful weapon in the game for almost all of it are your fists lol. ( keep in mind I mean the older versions where it's either too hard or too easy cuz of all the weird balancing issues this style of stat progression has.
I personally prefer this version over all the others, but I think the most important thing is how you feel about the graphics. If you look at the PSP version and compare it, do you prefer the more detailed graphics of the PSP version, or the pixel graphics of the new version? Gameplay-wise, the two games are almost identical, but the UI is slightly improved in the new version! Hope that helps 😀
@@Altercate Thank you very much!! I'm not caring too much about the graphics (I liked them both) but I wanted to know which one is better when you compare the extra QoL improvements from the PR version to the extra contents from PSP version
@@Altercate Gameplay wise they have some minor differences and a major one. Because of that major one, i prefer the PSP version: the stat penalty from the famicom version is back.
@4:48 Somewhat disagree, I say cheese the start.....set everyone up with a sword and shield and all front row......beat yourself until nearly dead, kill enemies....next battle heal each character with their own cure spell.....then kill monsters. Repeat until lowest hp is 200....after that just level fire ice and blizzard to level 4 as you explore to get both higher level and more mp.....then just play, but cheese the start. 20 hp on anyone is ridiculous Later buy 2 of each mythriln weapon, split them up amongst chars so all types are used (no more shield) (also except bow)
Honestly, you won't play this game for its story (it always cracks me up that when someone dies, your party doesn't seem to care one bit, haha). And the gameplay is only interesting if there is a challenge. So no, he's absolutely right, you don't need cheese tactics at all. I'm currently replaying the game with only mages (ie no heavy equipment, everyone only equipped with staves...) and it's been pretty fun so far (I'm up to retrieving the goddess bell).
@@armorvil I was making a run through all after doing ff7remake yuffie dlc...started on 3 before they mentioned these.....beat 1 pr now on part after dropping dreadnought with torch. Not so much for the story but ocd completions:) In the last run of 2 I did I did the max lvl toad and cheese hard with the items you get from mini game
0:30 It's the year 2021. Frankly after loads of rereleases of Final Fantasy 2 and 4 each, all the crossover games like Dissidia that label which game any given character comes from, and Wikipedia being a thing for a decade and a half now, anyone who hears "Final Fantasy II" and thinks "the one with Cecil" has no excuse.
Agreed, but it's still happening unfortunately. Every day some poor soul somewhere in the world is having to explain why Final Fantasy 2 is actually Final Fantasy 4. Sad times. 😫
SPOILERS AND TIP! Any idea how one reports to Square there is a game breaking moment at Dreadnaught when it first takes off when you get to it, if you return to the Hilda BEFORE going to see CID for the next code word (Sunfire), he won't give it to you unless Minwu is in your party (which he's not if you see Hilda first). This essentially locks you out of any further progress since CID won't ever mention Sunfire in this state you can't learn how to take down the Dreadnaught and it does not matter if you progress to Joseph or not because he won't tell you any keywords either.
One of my favorite things about the older Final Fantasy games is the targeting. Strategically, I like matching my characters against enemies based on their remaining HP, and realistically it doesn’t make sense to send everyone to attack the little goblin when there is a group of foes in front of you. But I am really considering buying this. Is there way to turn the target redirection off for more classic gamplay?
Unfortunately there's no option to turn it off... While I personally don't enjoy the lack of auto-targeting in the original, I totally get that some people prefer it! It definitely adds more strategy to the battles.
It's about the same as the GBA and PSP versions, which means it's very easy compared to the NES original. Overall, I'd say it's an enjoyable level of difficulty, but not a game you play for a challenge!
You know that in a few years they will be selling these games again, at same price, on the switch. Then years later they will remaster them again, and sell at same prices, with the added content of the paper and gba versions of each title. But we will all buy them again cause we want the ultimate version of each game
Played the pixel remaster it was good but the magic debuff when using equipment made me rely more on physical attacks unless I had to use magic and I'd say the game is lacking for not including the soul of Rebirth for the sake of story and now it wouldn't be much of a pain with the way the stats increase in the pixel remaster
Yeah, it's stupid that they included that penalty from the Famicom version, since the GBA and PSP remakes remove that feature, meaning you can have more "red mage" compositions, with characters well-versed in both physical and magic attacks.
I loved the leveling system, shame they took it from FF and moved it to the Saga games. I just hope they added a real save spot in the final dungeon, I died so many times losing everything running that hell mode run. The release they did for the PlayStation really needed that, though the quick save did help as long as you didn't die two steps away from where you saved that is lol (like I did hundreds of times). same on the save for FF 5 final dungeon, those especially sucked when you where one room away from the final boss when you die after loading the quick save (my biggest ground gears from two fun games)
I would love to see another take on this leveling system in a modern FF game! Regarding save points, the Pixel Remasters all have auto-saving as well as unrestricted quick save (the quick save isn't deleted when you load) so there are no concerns like this anymore. If anything they go a bit TOO far in this regard if you ask me 😂
@@Altercate I loved the system enough that when they dropped the Legend/ SAGA series on Steam I not only grabbed it but also the two Romancing remasters they had too and they were well worth the price for winter playing. The only other leveling system they had I liked was the job system from FF 5 which they made available in FF 12 Zodiac (shame no one has really worked on detailing the job system there though Just a lot of use this or try that in any walkthroughs you can find). Heck sitting in my desk drawer is an original of the game boy version of Final Fantasy legend 1 and 2 that I haven't played in years because the last gameboy I had went kaput and replacements are hard to find cheap

@@Altercate i am very curious about 4 5 6 pixel remaster maybe they use other graphics because it was for snes
@@Rosbergen80 Me too! They're going to be more divisive, I think, because the upgrade won't be as obvious as with the NES games. I hope they do a really good job!
Must play 9, was weird playing a dude with a tail but has the best characters ever
Pixel remasters not having the other version’s bonus content really sucks. I hope people mod it in
That would be nice for sure! 😀
You can't mod a full dungeon in.
@@armorvil Don't underestimate motivated modders!
Agreed! This version feels very close to what the original game should have been like 😀
Part of me wonders if they had a bunch of teams working on the "pixel remake" series to help train newer employees in how to make games while also being able to re-sell the older games... again...
That's an interesting theory for sure! 😂
Great review! I'm glad to hear they've rebalanced the leveling system.
@@HistorysMysterys I agree, the old level up system is awesome the new one is just too easy. AND LAME
Removing the chance that stats can lower made this a lot better for me. Also, not gaining weapon exp on weaker mobs made the grind moot as well. Overall for me, this pixel remaster of 2 is a great way to experience it for the first time or as a new playthrough with the QoL upgrades. Cheers!
This was what I wanted to know: if increasing some stats lead to a penalty on others
I used to head to Mysidia very early on in the game and level up. You can get lucky and kill the bomb guys and once you do you start leveling up pretty quick.
Great job on this video! I will absolutely buy all of the pixel remasters in a big bundle as soon as they are on the Switch.
Thank you so much! And agreed, these games are perfect for the Switch 😀
Thank you for this video! It really helped me decide if I'll be trying out FF2
Glad I could help! :)
Hope you do a review for the rest of the games and accompanying Pixel Remasters, they're great.
Definitely plan to! 😀
I just finished this game again and I Loved it all over again
I played the GBA version and enjoyed it. I want to try the original Famicom version. I will eventually pick this one up, especially for the OST.
Famicom version is quite an experience for sure! 😀
Thanks for commenting! Not a bad idea for a video 😀
Makes a lot of sense! The PSP version is really good! 😀
while that is true about the psp version having more bonus content and i agree with that, i think the pixel remaster actually has.. better qol regarding FF2's weapon level/spell leveling system, which would mean it can actually have.. slightly more replayability over the psp version(ie its faster to get through the story).
in FF2 psp it takes 100 weapon/spell uses per battle to level up once, which can be somewhat tedious.
but.. in pixel remaster of FF2(which i did play a few days ago and watched.) they actually improved and made the leveling far less tedious, as its based on uses overall in the remaster and not uses per battle anymore, which i think is a very good change.
ruclips.net/video/DHC2o3dQj-I/видео.html
I need u to drop the pixel remaster 4 video. I can’t wait til you have a ton of videos that I can just rewatch whenever i’m bored.
Thank you so much! 😍 I definitely want to do reviews for the FF4-6 Pixel Remasters, just hope they don't drop during my vacation lol
@@Altercate no problem. I’m a huge fan just keep it up 👍🏻
Now this is how you remastered the game! Wow, you've sold me!! I don't mind buying this game and other remastered FF titles form the good ole days.
Thanks for the review!
i really wish they pixelated the textboxes and menus as well. It just seems to jarring seeing the great pixel art with the characters and terrain next to the sleek modern looking menus/text
Definitely agree!
Kinda odd how reviews forget the GBA version was the PS1 FF Origins version with a bonus dungeon added...
Great video, I loved your editing! From this version, the only thing that I wish they included was some form of fast-forward in battles.
Thank you! 😀
I actually had the same feeling. Final Fantasy 2 is the best looking out of the pixel remasters!
seeing how EXACTLY the same these 1st 3 look especially the menus makes me a bit worried for the next 3.... 4 and 5 did have a little bit of basic look and feel to them but are still deff a step up and ff6 with its mode 7 and amazing graphics will be a strong outright downgrade in the pixelremaster if they keep this same'ish look and feel trend from the 1st three games released.
@@lenia272 They're going to have to do something a bit different for the SNES games, for sure! I hope that's why they're not out yet 😂
It would be really nice if they did, for sure! 😀
Just completed the first game and absolutely loved it. FF2 seems to be an odd ball, but I will give it a shot.
Good luck, hope you have fun with it! 😀
Thanks for the video! Helped me much.
Glad I could help! 😀
I've been looking into this game quite a bit this week and I think I might get the remaster when I get paid next.
playing through right now, liked and subscribed :)

Great review!
This video really helped me to decide about the buy.. and I bought it! haha
Cool! Glad I could help 😀
Personally I *would* suggest this version only if you haven't played the GBA/PSP version already, but the music is just so fantastic (aside from one boss remix that came out underwhelming)
One big downside of the pixel remaster in comparison to the PS1/GBA/PSP versions is the lack of the in-game cutscenes.
Am I the weird one that loves the leveling system in this game?
It's got its kinks and flaws but it's very satisfying for sure! 😀
I also liked it. Characters didn't get restricted with job concept, I can gear and train them any way I want.
@@Altercate I still think, along with FF1, is much better than the grinding of next games in the series, lol.
Not weird at all, this is a one of a kind gem
I never would have finished this game if not for this version, I really enjoyed it and the final dungeon music was phenomenal
ikr,
every JP games should be dumbed down first so we lazybum murrican can enjoy and actually finish the game without astronomical difficulties.
Since you’ve already done a lot videos on FF1 and FF2 when can we expect a video on FF3?
Square finally gave FF2 the ost it deserves
It's like all of Firion's namedays have come at once! 😂
I've completed Final Fantasy 1 and 3-10 but never could get into 2. I tried the NES version on an emulator and it was brutal.
great content. Thanks for the review.
Thank you so much, and thank you for everything you've done for us, Warrior of Light! 😂
About to hop into this one again even after how many times I dissliked it on mobile back in the day. Let's go! I'm sure I will enjoy this verion since I can't run my ps1 verion.
Let's go! Hope you enjoy it :)
@@Altercate Yeah I am absolutely in love with it. :)
Pros of note:
1) You can swap out field characters (meaning you aren't stuck walking around with Firion).
Good point about being able to swap the character! 😀
In the original you can have someone else walk around the overworld and other places...if Firion is dead. Then they go by party order from there.
@@vintagegamer695 Kind of a steep price.
Too fix screen tearing, make the game run in 720p in windowed borderless in the settings
@@Altercate I see what you mean, I followed ya, you look like you have good content to offer and I'm always curious about stuff I didn't know 👍

Despite that, in the GBA/PSP version there´s a room in the rebel base that explains you the new mechanics.
Great reviews! Please review FF3. Ended up sticking with my GBA version for FF1&2 after watching your vid. But I've never played 3 so I am curious if I play this one or the 3D remake @PSP
Thank you! I'm working on the FF3 review right now and will have it up in a few days! 😀
No doubt!
I’m so glad that they removed the mechanic to reduce opposing raw stat points, that means that we can truly create our own characters now!!
I still think the Anniversary Edition for PSP is the best, it has great visuals , the Pixel Remaster looks like a rush,
I can’t figure out how to turn on auto battles
Not sure if you're using keyboard or controller but you just push the key/button! (On my PS4 controller it was the Square button). You can activate it the moment the battle starts, or anytime during the battle, and you switch auto-battle on and off using the same key at any time. Hope that helps! 😀
Please, does this game have the option to change the font and music style (classic/orchestral)?
So. How much different is it to the PSP version? I remember dual weilding working etc. Yes the prices aren't cut, I know.
It's very similar to the PSP version imo. I didn't do a deep-dive comparison but it feels very much the same! 😀
This is good stuff. Nice job.
Thank you so much :)
Great video!
Thank you! 😀
So is there exclusive content in this version of the game?
No, there is no new content that's exclusive to this version. It's a pure remake of the original Famicom game, just with changes to the game engine, menu system, graphics, and music!
ruclips.net/video/DHC2o3dQj-I/видео.html
If you consider a much improved soundtrack content, then yes. In terms of gameplay, no.
Do you think this is worth playing over the Dawn of Souls version if I already have that?
Great video! Keep it up!
Thank you! 😍
The remastered Overworld theme is sooo good.
maybe they will add the bonus stuff to the game in a future patch?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed! But I think chances are low unfortunately :/
Todos os FF da série Pixel Remaster, esse foi o que mais me diverti, por ser menos "previsível" do que os demais da franquia clássica da Era 8 e 16-bit da Nintendo.

Greetings from Brazil (I wrote this words in brazilian portuguese, translate it and read 'em all). THANKS VERY MUCH!
FF2’s leveling system was always a huge turnoff for me. It sounds good in theory, but it sucks in practice.
It definitely had a lot of issues, especially in the original version! The remakes all play much smoother imo, I don't really have an issue with any of them (but it's still far from a perfect system) 😀
It's shit... I always use cheats to beat this game because I can't be arsed to sit around for 5 hours and attack my own party members. :/
Did they bring the magic penalty in this version? Would like New Game+ for consoles nonetheless
I didn't experiment that much but it seems like the magic penalty is much less severe than in the original game. AFAIK this version handles it the same way as the GBA/PSP versions.
the text size :(
also should have toggle-able difficulty and soundtrack to restore original.
"It's a lot like skyrim" those are dirty words. Ff2 predates skyrim by decades.
@@Altercate Its more like Oblivion to me, this leveling system
@@sinister9665 Makes sense! 😀
The 100% status infliction rate even when the enemies do 0 damage is a huge turnoff.
Yes, this game has some cheating enemies, that's why you need a cheating spell.
Level up your teleport spell can help.

It's a joy to listen to for sure! 😀
Hopefully for the dlc the add on that was in the psp version

Do you think that this version is better than the PSP one for a first run, even without the extra content the latter one has?
@@sebastiankulche Do you mean the penalty to Int/Spi from equipment?
@@Altercate Yeah.
@4:48
Somewhat disagree, I say cheese the start.....set everyone up with a sword and shield and all front row......beat yourself until nearly dead, kill enemies....next battle heal each character with their own cure spell.....then kill monsters. Repeat until lowest hp is 200....after that just level fire ice and blizzard to level 4 as you explore to get both higher level and more mp.....then just play, but cheese the start. 20 hp on anyone is ridiculous
Later buy 2 of each mythriln weapon, split them up amongst chars so all types are used (no more shield) (also except bow)
Definitely a good strat! 😀

Sad times. 😫
Honestly that's just purists and "obtuse-on-purpose" people.
Thanks for clearing up which version right out of the gate! I'm outta here. haha
Great review. Will you be doing the 3rd one as well?
Thank you so much! Yep, I'm working on it and will have it up sometime in the next few days! 😀
Thanks for these great reviews. You made me consider buying the new pixel remasters.
Thank you so much, glad I could help! 😍
Is it really sequence breaking if it's allowed by the game?
I guess it depends on your definition! I can see how you would feel that it's not sequence breaking 😀
It definitely adds more strategy to the battles.
good video !!
Thank you so much! 😀
Well, I'm a PSP and IOS versions orphan, because they removed the extra content. But it doesn't mean I don't like Pixel Remaster versions.
So what do you think of the difficulty?
It's about the same as the GBA and PSP versions, which means it's very easy compared to the NES original. Overall, I'd say it's an enjoyable level of difficulty, but not a game you play for a challenge!
@@Altercate oh well, i'm gonna get the game anyway, FF2 is one of my favorites. Thanks for the answer tho.
Definitely a shame they didn't include Soul of Rebirth!
