  • Square Enix just released the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, which includes a new version of the criminally underrated Final Fantasy 5! But is the Pixel Remaster the best available version of FF5? If you’re wondering what the game is like or if it’s worth buying the new version, this video is for you.

      Yep this and the Seiken Densetsu 3 English patch, my girl couldn't understand why I was so surprised and excited to see the Trials of Mana remake come out. Maybe some day there will be a similarly faithful FFV 3D remake, so I can experience that feeling of visiting a 3D realized Mana Holyland in FFV's setting.

    It's interesting how taste in games or media in general can shift over the years. After my initial playthrough 10 years ago or so, FF5 felt a little middle of the road to me, but after putting in about 8 hours into the pixel remaster now, this is quickly becoming my favorite 2D Final Fantasy. I'm appreciating the job system a lot more, I'm enjoying the character banter way more, and I had forgotten how many astounding pieces of music are in the game. Or maybe it's just the new renditions in particular. But the one that plays inside the meteors always pulls me in so hard. I'm loving my 2nd playthrough, and I think I might try the 4JF for the first time next year.

    Final Fantasy 5 is easily my favorite out of the 2D tiles. And my 3rd favorite overall behind FF9 and 10.
    The return of the job classes and the customization of different job abilities were great. The Dungeons and the boss battles are super rewarding.
    The story and characters are incredibly underrated, and are filled with charm and personality. And has some of my favorite tracks in the series.

    Both this and 6 were from the start the ones I was most looking forward to. Both games, despite being excellent overall, have only seen severely flawed international releases prior to this point (6 having a rough script on SNES and 5 not releasing at all, the GBA releases suffering from the system's weaker sound chip, and the prior Steam/mobile ports looking like...that).
    So having a version like this that looks as good as/slightly better than the original, reads as well as the Advance version, and *sounds* a million times better than any prior release, is a dream come true.

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  2 года назад +2

      That's pretty much how I feel about it, too! These games looked beautiful from the start in my eyes - I don't need new graphics, just a remaster of the original version.

    • @leargamma4912
      @leargamma4912 2 года назад

      The pixel remaster has a few issues, although it is closer to the definitive version. The advance jobs and extra dungeon of the GBA version is not the only reason it is "definitive" for me. The bug fixes and glitch patches in the PR make some job combinations and skills not as broken/overpowering as before, and it also makes certain previous exploits impossible. Hell, it makes the hard FJF challenge even harder. Unnecessarily brutal at times, if you get screwed with the random job assignments. Where as in former versions, the brutality was not there, due to a ton of exploits.
      In addition to the job ability changes and bug "fixes" (like the beserk status from mix command working for a set number of turns except the whole battle), the change of the quick save feature makes it so that encounters are not reset, and you cannot skip the gil turtle encounter in the cave to cheese infinite money. (GBA version) While that is a good thing for some, for those who enjoy the opportunity to buy super good endgame items without worry when doing a challenge or using sub-par jobs, this can be a bigger hinderance than it first appears. These examples are not the only things that change or are rendered impossible by the PR, but overall it adds up to make a significant impact to players who are returning to the game.
      Also modern square enix has a tighter grip on censorship, so the GBA version has the best script as far as I am aware.
      Those are just most of my gripes with it. If you are playing casually and you want to experience FF 5 with all its standard job goodness, then this version is for you. But the GBA version, at least for me, is still the definitive version. The sound chip of the GBA is the only downside, as the music in 5 wasn't as stand out as something like 6 or 4. Battle on the Bridge being the only exception. And I can find it online in better quality and orchestral renditions galore.

    Been into this for about 5 hours, and it's a faithful representation of the original game so far. The only issue that I have is the Ability Points display: The SFC version has the ABP status shown when the user is in the process of choosing a job. Unless I'm missing something, this doesn't happen in the Pixel Remaster. It shows the current level and what weapon that job can equip, but NOT the accumulated points from that character's level. So if you're selective in figuring out how much you need to level up (and you don't remember how much ABP you have from that job or any of the 20+ others), the only way to find out is to actually choose the job and return to the parent menu. Everything else is all good 👍🏽

    • @edyc1989
      @edyc1989 2 года назад +5

      Another thing i kinda find annoying is the bestiary. In the gba version it was under the settings option in the menu but in this version you have to exit the game to the title. So every time i want to check what items i can steal from mobs i have to exit the game to the title screen then load again.

Probably won't bother uncursing the Cursed Shield and won't level above 35~40 so enemies supposed to be challenging are still challenging. I'm almost at the end of FFV, I have a blast, and FFV is far from my fav. FFVI is. I really can't wait for it. Some parts / musics of FFV made me cry. the biggest change in this version is how atb works, and that affects quite a bit. on one hand, the player has more control over holding character actions which is immensely beneficial... on the other side of the coin, the atb no longer pauses upon a characters bar filling, the tldr of which is enemies get more turns. these are not insignificant changes and quite noticeable to a ff5 vet.
    the script is 95% gba except a couple lines that were changed for... reasons?
    the soundtrack is standout with two glaring exceptions; x deaths battle theme is sorely lacking its killer percussion and big bridge is an overdone travesty, as every remixed version of that song tends to be.
    gba content missing is no big deal because lets be honest it wasnt good.
    overall pixel remaster is quite good, id say gba version remains definitive for a first timer, and project demi (a mod for the snes rom which removes all cutscenes) is ideal for a replay/variant game

    Great review! I myself adore FFV, it's always been my very favorite FF. I've 100%ed the original many times, I've also 100%ed FFV Advanced once, mastering every job class, besting every creature including Enuo and the other superbosses and getting 100% items; and that version to me still feels like the most complete package, bar none. I've played the other pixel remaster FFs before this one, and I gotta say, some of the updates are really nice, and I especially like the auto-battle feature; later on, it just makes mandatory grinding a breeze. Still, though I don't mind the more modernized active battle system, it does make some fights a tad tedious including this game's ACTUAL big super-boss and one of the most bs enemies in the entire FF catalogue, Gil Turtle aka Gilgame; that guy can eat a a butt.
    I find it/them so much more annoying in this version because ontop of hitting like the offspring of 12 tanks bred with an iron-clad whale, due to the active battle system, it SEEMS like it/they get/s even more turns/counters in. But that's just a gripe I have with that darn turtle in all versions of V, really; that and the fact you have to slay him before the 2nd main point of no return to get his beast entry (as far as I know).
    I do appreciate the arranged score, since FFV has some really genuinely nice/beautiful songs, and some of the graphical effects, though small look just great, especially big explosions.
    My ONE big actual gripe with FFV pixel remastered is how downright awful the Steal command feels most of the time, it feels like even with things such as Thief Gloves and a mastered Thief ability, the odds of you stealing an item no matter how bad the drop rate, is complete random, and another offender to tie into this package as a whole, is the fact that some bosses have nothing to steal; whereas in the original everyone has something to steal as soon as you obtained the job class, no matter how trivial, and worse yet, some bosses and enemies alike can have a tossup between 2 items, one say, with an incredibly low steal rate, and you can only steal ONE item per enemy(bosses included); meaning for example if Titan has a potion with 96% steal rate, and the Gaia Hammer weapon with a close to 4% chance(that you can't buy til later on in the game, and is quite good), guess which you're most likely to get? And you can't go back to refight main bosses to try again!
    Does anyone else feel the same about the Steal-system? I use it all the time in any version and just don't remember it feeling this unfair. Tmv~

    After playing Chrono Trigger DS, a stellar port marred slightly by the addition of incredibly lazy (optional) dungeons, I’m fine with the Pixel Remasters giving us only the classic experience. I am slightly disappointed by the rebalanced difficulty in 1-3 (and hope the 16-bit trilogy isn’t changed as much). Wish they had included an option for those who want to experience the original Famicom/NES difficulty.

      Thanks for sharing! A difficulty setting would have been nice, for sure. I never played the DS version of Chrono Trigger. The original had such a wealth of content to go through, I never felt like it was missing anything :)

    I just hate the menu. The original snes and gba version had such an elegant menu and it put the job and ability selection right at the top. The redone character sprites are less detailed than the snes original. I feel as it gets into the snes era, the pixel remaster is not a clear improvement over the original. The music is great but the original was also great. Uematsu tailored the composition for the sound of the snes and I feel it still holds up beautifully and the remastered soundtrack is not always an improvement. However, if you aren't into emulation and playing the j2e patched snes rom, then this could probably considered the definitive official release. But the snes version is significantly better imo.

      Thanks for sharing! I definitely prefer the way the character sprites look in this version, but I get that not everyone feels that way. As for the soundtrack, the way I see it is that there can never be too many arrangements of a good soundtrack! :)

      @@Altercate yea. I still love it. Playing through it right now. Previously I had played through the psx anthology version and that version was the worst.

    I dont like the font, you say there is a simple way to fix this?

    • @Altercate
      @Altercate  2 года назад +1

      Sure! Basically you go into the files in the install folder and replace the English font with the Japanese font. Here's an explanation/instruction: www.rpgsite.net/feature/11522-how-to-fix-that-awful-font-in-the-final-fantasy-pixel-remaster-games-on-pc

    I hate that they used the same spell effects for all five games so far, it just feels lazy. Other than that the pixel remasters are great. Here's to hoping 6 finally gets the makeover it deserves.

    Ok but why did they remove the previous versions? That not cool

      Yeah, I can see how it would be super confusing for people to know which version is which if they kept the old version around for sale, but it's still a shame!
