@azuremistkingdom I'm just a huge sucker for FFV. Gilgamesh is my boy, haha. Hopefully, luck will be on your side if you attempt it again. If you do, maybe solo with Galuf to save you from the technicality when he rescues the rest of the party, and to make that part easier, haha.

I don't know if you would count it as an exploit, but using the Razer sword can help out a lot. Tiamat even has a weakness to it, at least she did in the original release.
Tiamat's insta-kills from the original release exist in the Wonderswan/PS1/PSP versions, but I've heard it was patched out of the pixel remaster.
Something to note about FF1 is that the back half is surprisingly non-linear. You can access Crescent Lake immediately after opening the canal, but you do need to defeat the Lich to get the canoe. Something I like doing when I play is to do the Ice Cave before Mount Gulg so I can access the airship. Gather every Ribbon you can find, as the give protection against every element in the game (including all instant death attacks). There are three in the Pixel Remaster version. One in the Waterfall Cave, one in the Sunken Shrine, and one in the Flying Fortress. As an aside, there is a fourth obtainable in the Dawn of Souls, PsP, and 20th anniversary versions at the bottom of the Hellfire Chasm. Not sure if this is in the Pixel Remaster, but the in the Dawn of Souls version trying to use a piece of equipment will display which classes can use it. Also be sure to read item descriptions as many later pieces of equipment cast spells when used as items. Finally, again not sure if this was changed for the Pixel Remaster version, but in other versions the lower a party member is in the formation the lower their chance of being attacked is. Top slot has 50%, second has 25%, and third and fourth have 12.5% each; assuming your entire party is alive.
Is that surprising? That was like a key feature of the game that made everyone love it, and a precursor to open world RPG's. I remember beating the lich last of the 4 fiends on my first playthrough just because I could. Easy fight. Feels good man.
Shadow is not a thief, he is a ninja. By occupation and use on FF6. And yes I know that Ninja class functions as a thief in some games... well actually I think only in FF4 but anyway! He's not a thief. lol
Personally I think you should have gone with the Tantalus boys, Blank, Cinna, Marcus and Zidane. Could have even nicknamed the airship Tantalus.

In most final fantasy? How many FF games are there where you get a job promotion or gain the job from training the thief class? Excluding FF1 I can't think of any up to 13, except maybe Tactics and the MMORPG games, all of which I have either not played or couldn't get into long enough to see how the class/job systems work.
And yes I know Edge is a Ninja but as he could steal so I didn't feel it was necessary to mention him as he does double as the thief in FF4, albeit in ability only.

I remember there being a final fantasy tips website in the early 2000s it ranked starting parties out of 10. The 4 thief was ranked -99 out of 10 haha

To be fair, prior to the (I think) GBA remake, Thieves were a wasted slot until they class changed. Literally the only thing they were good for was running away, except the running mechanic was bugged and the luck stat didn't affect run chances. They also had much lower accuracy compared to the more recent versions, so they couldn't really kill anything either.

Would love to see this with red mages. It's such a grind heavy run cause of all the gold needed to buy all the spells and gear for everyone. I named mine after the 3 Musketeers when I did the run way back when. Great videos though! Always love seeing challenge runs.

Chaos in PR is stupid buffed. He had perfect accuracy.
So, if you decide to do more challenge runs, one thing that might help to know is that odds of an enemy attacking a character when using single target attacks is determined by party order.
The toon in the top slot has the highest chance of being targeted.
Unless they changed it,
Slot 1: %50
2: %25
3&4) %12.5
So using someone in slot 3 or 4 as your DPS can help a lot to keep your damage flowing.
Yes I read that somewhere as well, but on both of the 100% runs it didn't feel like that at all.
Watched this video right after your monks video. I like your content, definitely hoping to see a white mage run that would be the most interesting of the classes to use i think
Gamechamp3000 has a solo white mage run for the original FF1. The big difference with the white mage is that they can use magic.
one piece of advice for healing. you can grab the heal staff and the heal helm as well for if you run out of healing. it'll cast Heal on the party and can be a good supplementary.
Thanks to your videos, I'm doing my own challenge runs of FF1 PR. Finished the white mage only run. It was rough until I got the magic casting items. Then it was stupid easy. Lol. Now I'm doing monks only. Just beat Lich, and about to do the ice cavern so I can get the airship. I don't think I'll be doing thieves only though. Black mage only might be my next one.

@@azuremistkingdom if you do, you'll have a way harder time thanks to the crap physical damage they can do. And be sure to stock up on ethers too, since you'll be doing a lot more healing with spells rather than items.

I never did only thieves, but I loved doing 4 thieves into ninjas. 4 ninjas was OP, third best party net to to 4 knights or 4 masters. Start every boss fight by casting fast on yourselves then 2 or 3 turns you've stripped away all their hit points. Give them all cat's claws and go to town.
Naming them after other iconic thieves is super sick. 🎉🤩

I can't give too much specific details, though some equipments can be used as spell casting items in battle. For example, healing staff casts heal and Thor's hammer casts thunder. Best part is any party member can use these equip casts indefinitely even if the equipment isn't equipped (though you can only use a piece of equipment once per turn so if you have one thors hammer only one person can use it per turn, and anyone that is equipped with said equipment can access it exclusively by going to the items menu and pressing up). Hope this helps either in future runs, or for anyone else reading this.
Edit: nevermind, just realized you're doing that. I mistook things with the clip of the black flan being attacked physically.

Are there any interesting routing changes or side quest objectives trying to get all achievements? Just open all chests and fight the mech? Also, nice challenge runs!
Thanks! For the 100% there isn't any routing changes, but for progression there are a couple variants. Normally it's earth>fire>ice>wind for the crystals, but after earth you can go to ice to get the levistone for the airahip. if you compare this video with my thieves video you can see what I'm talking about.
Also later tips, I cant tell by the sped up fights or how you played, but Giants gloves cast saber to up the users attack and accuracy, it stacks if used multiple times. and there should be 3 healing items in the game. now i dont know how strong they are when the thief uses them but you can aoe heal with the 3 other members by using the items which should be usable multiple times. I dont have the PR version so unless they changed the items for single use per battle that could be more effective than high potions on 3 people per turn if the heal gear does more than 50 aoe health a pop.
This was something I thought about, the only issue I found with trying to use the healing items Instead is how quickly the bosses can attack, so I need the up front hp the hi-potion offers. As for the stackable giants gloves, that I didn't know!
@@azuremistkingdom That tactic was more to save potions between mobs. You kill all but the weakest enemy. Have 3 use the heal equipment and 1 waste turn with a buff item. was almost required in the NES and PS1 version, 99 potions, No Hi-potions, No phoenix downs and revive spells didn't work in battle, Max 9 spell casts per level of spell. Max level was also capped at 40.
If and when you do all white mages, it can get really easy but takes time if you need it. Save scum every level for one of the white mages to be sure they always get a strength and any other stat you want boosted every level(this can take an insane amount of time the more stats you want). this can be your "fighter" white mage who will eventually get masamune and do insane damage while the other 3 will so buffs and heals. you will run into the issue where exit curaja and diaja and all of level 8 magic will be locked away behind the class change. but item/gear buffs and the one super roided white mage will be easy if you find that challenge with not enough dps at the end.
Maybe I could name one Yuna and just whack things for max dmg
For future challenge runs, you might find it interesting to use advanced classes but fewer characters, like three ninjas or two knights. Personally, I prefer high difficulty but lots of options, as opposed to brute-force numbers games, but I have a low tolerance for grind.
I really didn't notice a real difference in commentary style. At least not to the point where one is worse than the other.

Just discovered your channel and am enjoying these runs. Small bit of constructive criticism for runs like these...if people are watching a challenge run, they likely know the basics of the game. Sometimes, I was hoping for an explanation of what gear you were using, what levels, etc. For example, I've done this sort of challenge and I know it's a BIG DEAL when you get the Mystic Key because of all the weapon upgrades you get, but you sort of glossed over that part. 😅

Doing a min level Ascension run might be a fun video idea. It's probably my favorite run type to do in this game
Thief is IMO the coolest looking original FF1 design. Red Mage is my favorite mechanically. Turning the thieves into dudes with green bandannas instead of blue hair was a downgrade in most remakes, glad this one just updated the original appearance.

GBA versions are kind of near the bottom of the list, mostly due to challenge runs already being done for a lot of the earlier FF titles; but I dont want to limit myself; so its certainly an option.
I haven't seen your other challenges - but this one is quite neat, thank you for putting it together :)
Edit: I wonder - in the original you could use the white robe for Invisra multiple times, and it would stack to the point where enemies basically couldn't physically hit you anymore. Is this still the case in the repixelmaster?

No the Pixel Remaster got rid of it and all the GOOD over leveling up spots so not only is it NOT in the Pixel version but the Hall of Giant's Earth Temple where you fight Lich is no longer in game since you no longer trigger random battles their for EVERY Step you take.
the Infinite Demon Eye enemies in the Ice Cave area no longer exist the Pixel Remaster only allows you to kill it ONCE.
INT stats DO work on the Pixel version that's why the healing helm is useless for the Thief/Ninja/Monk/Master classes since they will barely restore 30 to 40 HP to the entire party using it when Chaos end game can take a lv 99 Thief party and hit them for OVER 400 damage.

Maybe I'm odd but I don't think that ascending the classes should be disallowed on a 100% run since ascending them is actually a requirement of 100%. Thought i guess I understand why some would consider it that way. But to me the ascended versions are not a different classes. They are just an advanced version of the same class, kind of like leveling up and gaining new abilities.
I ascend at the very end to get the achievement, but not ascending is for the extra challenge :)

So....not to be "that guy" but back in my day, FFI only had potions. No hi-potions, x-potions, etc. And you could only carry like 32 items or something ridiculously small (99 of a single item was the talk of fever dreams and madmen).
Also, I'm pretty sure you had to equip the items before battle so each character only had maybe 2 potions max or 1 potion 1 revive in any given battle. (That might have just been FF2 on the PS1, it's been a while)
This run is super impressive, don't get me wrong, but I'm thinking it'd be near impossible to do this on the NES or PS1.
FF1 is such a simplistic and linear game but it's damn good.

I have seen people complete a 4-thief, no class change run on the original NES. I don’t recommend it.

Why the choice of 1 for 1 healing. You should have collected 2x Healing Helms, and a Healing Staff. These are AOE heals, with three users casting them every turn you can heal the entire party 250+ damage. Do this in conjunction with casting Saber multiple times with Giants Gloves on main character(effect is stackable), and you will start dealing much larger damage very quickly, while still maintaining party health.
So...100% with White Mages coming soon? ^_^

how about a red mage 100% run? but if you want some extra chellange only go to lv 3 spells, iv heard red mages are easy vs alot of other classes nace the extra layer.

Its doable but like 4x Monks its going to be brutal since the healing helms when used by any NON Black White Red mage/wizard users barely restores 30 to 40 HP and at LV 99 Chaos in a SINGLE hit to 4x Thief/4x Ninja's can still do OVER 400 damage in 1 hit/or all at once with HIS attack spells.
Black Belts get more INT than Red Mages, or did on my playthrough at least.

Lucifer isn't necessarily evil. It roughly translates to "bringer of light".
So the Luciferians would be "those that bring light".

Did I miss something? Why does Shadow start taking double damage later in the run? Is it a quirk in how boss attacks work? Does he have worse armor? Did he die enough that he fell into a die/miss XP/die because lower level spiral that affects defensive stats?
The game only gives 3 ribbon helmets, which give a big defense boost, he was the one who didnt have one
Sorry but Shadow ain't a thief. Edge is also not a thief but a Ninja and it's clearly stated as such in FF4. That being said he does have a command to steal which Shadow is lacking.
Theres a tas of the nes vefsion being beaten buy 1 white mage. Its wild to watch them manipulate the rng.

Nice job. I think that if you routed better, you'll get the items you want faster that would make the entire game so much easier. My recommendation is to skip the Volcano and go directly for the Ice Cave (run from most battles, since you're trapped there until you leave) and then go for the Castle of Ordeals. The Sunken Shrine should be your second Fiend, and it will give you a massive upgrade in gear that you can use to pretty much mop up anything else. I personally don't bother with the Volcano until I've finished everything else.

I did this on the PSX version... on easy mode. No way I was doing it on normal.
No idea how the PR's difficulty and balance compares with that but having phoenix downs at least makes this look less painful.
I think the pixel remaster is about the same as the easy mode. At the least the normal game didn't have phoenix downs, high potions or quick saving and leveling up was much slower. That would have made this run much, much harder.

Is NO ONE going to tell him that saber stacks, and that he can use the healing helms, and the healing staff, which is 3 items that are permanent use all heal around 50-70 each?
I have seen all of your runs this far, and since the first one I've been screaming in my head about this, and yes, you can 100 percent the game with white mage's far easier than thieves.
They get equipment that nullifies all stats effects in the village with the fairy, they can also just spam the healing helms, and healing staff while your main guy stacks Saber.
You are fighting the GBA version of Chaos, if it was the original like it SHOULD have been, Chaos would only have 2k HP.
I also have to point out, the person in the first row usually have the highest chance of getting hit from non AOE attacks.
It less that that I had the healing Helm/Staff restore ONLY LIKE 30 to 40 HP on all when any NON MAGE uses it but that still sucks when Chaos at lv 99 in 1 hit STILL hits for 400 + damage that 2 healing helms and 1 Staff user using those every turn won't OUTHEAL 400+ damage at all.
@@veghesther3204 it's around 30-50, I'm doing the same run and it works really well with Saber.
And that's his physical attack, which he targets anyone randomly, so eventually he might take someone down.
Overall the triple use can out pace his damage, I can't recall how much it did on the mage's, but I can tell you that int does nothing in the remaster.
The only bullshit thing they did besides make the pixels look better in FF1, was put the much harder GBA version of Chaos into the NES version of FF1. Again, I REPEAT INT does nothing outside of the origins version.
So hey, look at me knowing what I'm talking about. :D
Edit: Yes on the mage's using it better, obviously, but you shouldn't count it out anyway.
I had Chaos's FULL party spells still do like 300 to 400+ damage to the entire party
and non mages still can't outheal those.
On the PIXEL version I DID have INT make the Healing helm/staffs go from like 40 to 50 HP recover to up to around 70 to 100 PER use but ONLY if the Red White or Black Wizards/Mages uses them.
No I did not know the saber/equipment stacks when using them in combat, so more power to me by not doing that? :D

Playing the PR version is not very challenging, try the NES version. That would kick you in the teeth.
I feel like you using quick saving should be banned it kinda makes things too easy.
