Thank you for talking about the racism and prejudice against brown-skinned peoples. This lady spoke about discrimination against muslims. Thank you for including it in your video. Here in Japan brown-skinned people suffer just as much as black people do. I personally think your RUclips channel is THE BEST on RUclips. I was once worried that your channel only addressed discrimination against black people, I'm happy a few minutes of this video highlighted the problems that brown people face. Yes a lot of brown people themselves are racist. But a lot of brown people are not and they support antidiscrimination against black people. Your videos really help me to plan my life in Asia since I experience racism a few times a week here in Tokyo. Thank you, keep up the good work. ♡

The problem is that if you are of a different culture where being confident and speak out is a strong trait - Singaporean take it as arrogance probably. Singaporean understands asian culture only and I feel like a “bad asian” rather then “of a different culture” while I live here.
In the US, it is the people that scream about diversity and inclusion all day that care the most about race. And yes, a lot of these people are super arrogant and rude as well.
She is very beautiful. I love her hair. It looks so gorgeous and healthy. There is nothing like seeing a black woman being proud of her crown. It is so inspiring and heart warming. Proud of You!
Hey guys, just to manage expectations, Ashley is living an expat life so she seems very removed from the daily realities of Singaporeans. The locals aren’t untouched by racism and xenophobia. The truth is, if you’re a foreigner in shades of brown, things can get a little tricky when you’re in the thick of local society. The vast majority Singaporeans are very innocent & oblivious to cultural nuances, but there are some who will display acts of micro-aggression or casual racism in public transportation or elevators. It’s not going to be easy for you to rent a public housing flat unless you rent it from a Malay or Indian homeowner. Agents will ask for your race and filter you out. It will probably also be easier if you have western accents compared to having African accents. But yes, on the whole, Singapore is a wonderful, peaceful, safe, tolerant country. You will be free from the disgusting racism seen in western countries. It’s my home and the best place in the world for me. It’s by no means perfect, but it can be a heaven for peace loving, productive people.
Agents have to filter out certain races if the rent is in a HDB flat though. There is this thing called ethnic quota by HDB to balance the racial diversity in the area.

Personal Opinion, South East Asians are the friendliest and have the most down to earth personalities, compared to the Big Three of Asia, China, Japan, Korea...just better overall personalities.
mak 10 The Black people where I live are friendly and polite. The old women sit on their balconies and bid you a good day and address you as “baby.” Don’t generalise a population as bad please.

Singapore is the best Asian country for travel in my opinion, especially for black people. How i wish Singapore was more popular than Japan and Korea and had their own "wave". I advise any black person going to Asia to go to Singapore. People minding their business, less rudeness, making your money and a good time.
@dubeei4u one of the Japanese ministers once went on a benter and said something along the lines "Japan is one language, one culture, one nation ,one race and one person" that doesn't see very open minded to me dude.
@dubeei4u most Japanese pretend but deep down not all Japanese like black people.however you will find people more tolerant of black people in Japan than korea and China.thats a fact. Japanese nationals are also really strong in racism.
I notice everyone is speaking about his eye contact but it is called having respect and discipline. He is a married man, people and the respect for his marriage is present. Not only that but he is the face of this channel. Why would he start being disrespectful to his guest now? That will set the tone moving forward. I could say more but do negate the fact that he is a great interviewer, his ease makes his guest comfortable. Ashley is young, confident in herself and her body. She is gorgeous and charismatic, her skin is flawless. The did mention that it is hot and humid, as well as them coming from an event she held. GREAT CONTENT!!!
People are commenting on her dress (or lack of it). I can see towels in the background, hear water in the background and it looks as if she's wearing a swimsuit/bikini underneath her top. She's probably at a pool, in which case her attire is entirely appropriate. So quit the judginess people. She's very interesting to listen to, makes a lot of salient points and this is a great interview.

Ikr! I was thinking this was a spontaneous interview because of the background sound and lighting. Someone as smart as her surely know how to dress properly for an interview but this might be something rushed so she can’t dress up properly and just winged the interview.
There’s a clip of her partying with a lot of other people - supposedly at the same place because she’s wearing the same outfit. But everyone else is properly dressed. Hers were the only bazooms hanging out there as she danced.
“One thing about Singapore, is it’s the first time I’ve ever felt American” A lot of us share that sentiment. I was born, raised, and live in America, yet I don’t feel American, which is why I don’t get upset when people from other countries generalize Americans; I simply don’t feel American. When you’re treated as less than, with suspicion, and not embraced by your own country, you naturally become detached.
Doing your genealogy will probably erase that feeling. If you dig deep and find that you have ancestors on this soil going back further than they programmed you to believe, you realize that not being embraced by invaders, is to be expected and should have no bearing on your connection to America.
I feel like she’s in a bathing suit and cover up for her pool side brunch. I think that she’s great telling her experience and giving us a clear view in. Plus she had coordinated a friggin event for all the black ppl and is willing to go to an interview afterwards. I’m proud of her for being at Google, for getting other blacks together and for telling her truth in a respectful eloquent way.
I hear you. But it was very distracting nonetheless. And this was one of the times he did not have the camera switch back and forth between different angles. That might have broken up the focal point of her breasts being on display, either way beautiful woman. Good interview as usual.
Tsunade Hime, correct, she was indeed wearing a bathing suit, she's a highly impressive woman from a career and perseverance standpoint and it's unfortunate that many of the comments are only focused on her physical attributes. The fact that she is highly educated, articulate and worldly makes her all the more attractive.

Honestly, there is a lot of systemic racism in Singapore as well. Glad to hear that you didn't experience it but that's because you're from the US. Here in Singapore the system and the govt are biased towards people from the west AKA the Expats, so even if you're darker-skinned or black they favour you because you're American or European or even African. However, speak to any brown local like Indians and Malays and brown foreigners like South Asian migrant workers and all of them will have multiple stories and instances to share of systemic racism and daily racist microaggressions.
Absolutely. It's an extension of the relative wealth and military power enjoyed by all Western European + Anglo-colonized countries (all white) due to centuries of imperialism.

Lol even the EIC or HEIC for noob can call them colonial British company said that Temasek or Singapore is more valueable than a continent in their report to HQ in India from their expedition.
As a Singaporean, I can tell you that this country has some of the strictest standards of hygiene when it comes to F&B (food and beverage) preparation and restaurant cleaniness, and heavy fines and penalties are imposed on errant restaurants and sellers. There are no unlicensed food stalls anywhere. No idea how she is getting the food poisoning.
They are probably mistaken. When a person eats crappy food full of GMOS and Chemical Additives like the people in the U.S. are subjected to, when you start to eat clean food again you can get a Herxheimer or detox reaction. It's also possible to react to foods you simply aren't used to. I have always heard that Singapore is very clean.
I am Jamaican too I honest never had to acknowledge that I was black. I was just Jamaican. We had Black, White, Asian, Indian we was Jamaican first. We was just Jamaican. We was more proud of the culture that let me know what color we were. After being here in States for 12 years it was constantly force on me state I am black be apart of the black experience in America. My experience is highly influenced by cultural experience of islander. We think differently and we see the world differently.
I appreciate your comment - people place way too much of a focus here that I think it (unintentionally) ends up feeding into creating more racism. I don't mean my comment in any disrespectful way, I just think that a lot of focus is placed on race in the US and it ends up creating a lot of tension whereas in other countries that's not such a big focus.
If you are a dark skinned Westerner visiting Asia, you are not likely to encounter much prejudice. An African American or British person of African decent would most likely get the same amount of respect as their white expat counterparts. It would be a different story if you were a dark skinned migrant worker from a poor country working in those lowly paid jobs the locals won't do.
@Vick Nad nope asians are anti black/ anti-dark GIVEN that you come from a poor background. eg. asians that live in their ethnic countries see western culure as powerful so when they encounter a black person they associate them with a western background and treat them with respect, however, when asians "level up" and move to culturally powerful countries, they look upon darker skinned folks from poorer backgrounds unfavorably and mistreat them (this includes but isn't limited to black people). It's a little more complex than simple anti blackness/ anti darkness (STILL FUCKED UP THO)
I have not experienced racism in Mexico as I have in the United States. But I have gotten a few Bad looks while I was in Mexico City. Where I live I am appreciated for my darker skin tone and my kinky hair. It’s a much different feeling of admiration that people give me.
Food poisoning common in Singapore? I am SIngaporean, I have never seen food poisoning as a common thing. Our Hawker stalls have food hygiene ratings and they have to maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness conducted by our NEA. Sure, if you eat food that is too spicy, you gonna have some tummy upset, food poisoning, seriously? Could it be the food issues in Google? LOL.
Our food hygiene level is good here. Maybe she just cannot stomach the coconut milk in our curry or laksa. Just not used to the ingredients. Not a hygiene issue.
Maybe you have not read the news? It may not been a daily occurrence, but there have been shocking series of food poisoning cases hitting the news since the Spize headlines came up
@@matreen427 That is catering. Food that is kept for too long before being consumed. Of course there are but few. Ashley said everyday, someone will be unwell due to food poisoning. That is so not a Singapore thingy. Maybe a particular food stall or canteen in Google.
Yes. Food poisoning is very rare really unless you buy food and leave it aside and not eat it until many hours later. It’s warm here so u should eat your food within 1-2h tops.
The Black Experience Japan, that was an outstanding interview with Ashley. She shared great viewpoints and excellent comparison between Singapore and other countries...especially the work environment and friendship development between different cultures in the workplace.

Did you know that Lisbon is one of Europe’s emerging art cities. New galleries are constantly opening, international dealers are scouting artists, and numerous artists are moving to this seaside city for the low rents and affordable studio space. You can live in Lisbon for about 1500 Euro/Month. If that's not in your budget, it may be better to go to Thailand or Indonesia. Or, if you aren't afraid to get out of the box, may I recommend Accra Ghana, Dakar Senegal, or Kigali Rwanda. Just try it for 6 Months (you can always come back).

Review my suggestions to ammy doodles. What I tell many AA's is that if you can get a job as a telephone support rep (which is easy since there is a demand for Native English speaking reps), and make sure this job will allow you to "work from home" (fairly common now), your home could be anyplace on the planet with decent Internet. A $15/hour phone support rep working for a U.S. company, but living in a place like Kuala Lumpur - lives like royalty because the cost of living is so low in comparison. Whereas $15/hr in the U.S. = broke as hell.

I love how proud you wear your natural hair. That is the way it should be in general for all Afro women. Of course wigs etc. are okay some days but the Afro hair is beautiful in its own way and I love how we begin to embrace it .

Its funny that in Asia a majority of black women wear their natural hair and the black men still are not with them, they’re with the locals or someone else. She's so right about people seeing "black" before "American". Teddy Roosevelt was famously against hyphenated Americanism. We are all one people. I’m an American and I do feel the bubble of being here and have been longing to travel because of how left out I feel here..watching these videos helps me so much on realizing how the world is amazing brilliant and vast and it every nook and cranny has intense quiet tension towards a group. I can’t wait to find places to learn about and hopefully move to.

I'm a black woman in Tech and she got me wanting to have my boobs out in Singapore too hahahaha. I'm loving this interview and so happy to see such a positive place. I live and work in the South and I tell people all the time. I don't feel like I belong in my own country. Thanks so much for this uplifting conversation. Also when he asked about why there aren't many black people in Tech, in the South at least we are overlooked. If there were no equal opportunity laws in place, I doubt I would even have a job. I have excellent experience and work performance history but, outpaced by any other person because the opportunities are rare. The majority of my IT class were black so the ratio of us in the workplace is underrepresented. Most black people, I know have moved into other industries but I think things are finally starting to change.

I grew up in Germany... My dad was in the military and retired there. I moved back to the States when I was 24... Was back in Frankfurt within 3 months! I have NEVER experienced as much racism as I have living in the US. A country my father fought for. I joined the military myself to be stationed back overseas and the camaraderie of the military.
Singapore is not free from racism as most Chinese boomers are still very close-minded. Nevertheless, the country had 0 tolerance towards hate crime/speech and most of the younger people here welcomes all races!!!! All in all, i love you guys and welcome y’all ♥️ always had mad respect for people from your culture, and I’m damn sure I’m not the only one!
I've travelled a great deal and visited Singapore in 1997 for a holiday. Of all the countries I've visited, Singapore is up there. I do hope to revisit it again. I just want to make a special mentioned of how clean it was there and friendliness of the people. We were two black girls travelling alone and we felt safe. I remember seeing a poster advert telling local people to remember to smile at strangers who are visiting Singapore. How lovely! 🙂

My Aunt who is originally from Jamaica and her kids (from America) lived in Sinvapore due to their father being in the military and they absolutely loved it and my cousins eventually want to move back. They made tons of genuine friends there
It so sad that in America people feel like this. I’m from South America and grew up in America since I was 4. I feel more American outside of the US than in the US.
@@sunnydale6903 The science answer is in a simple biological and neurological explanation; it has to do with base brain mechanisms that promote the powerful bond of a mother to her infant. An unconscious evolutionary drive prompting us Males to activate powerful bonding circuits that help create a loving, nurturing bond. As well as signaling to a man that a woman is in good health and therefore an excellent prospect to bear and raise children. The attraction is a natural one, and oft-times a distraction for us guys...as is the case here because (after actually having to *listen* the presentation again) the Sista is an accomplished, highly educated, goal oriented, and focused woman that would be extremely attractive in that light alone...sans the plunging neckline.
I really felt that opening comment. As a very dissatisfied Black American, I have never felt at home here and I'm looking forward to traveling extensively and maybe living abroad when I retire.

i have a friend just like her who moved from Miami to Singapore for about several months to a year. She is a senior position in HR and also experienced the same thing. I’m so glad i met her and her then boyfriend who also came from Miami. I totally feel her that we asians (especially Singaporeans) are too reserved and avoid saying anything even if something is so glaringly wrong. I battle with this my whole life as a Singaporean as my personal orientation is opposite of it. So glad she’s happy.
I find this conversation so positive and empowered. Really thoughtful questions from the interviewer and thoughtful responses from the interviewee. It makes my heart happy.
Yeah in Singapore, BROWN people (indians, malays, bangladeshis etc) are treated badly... not Black people. So YOU, as a black woman may forget about racism in Singapore, but WE brown people experience it everyday. Trust me, speaking as a Singaporean, no we are not all that fantastic...

Every time I see videos with black peoples living anywhere in the world outside of United States you can see the difference in behavior. They are humble well spoken and the nicest people ever. This is because they are treated like humans and respect. Here in America they are forced to act the way some do because of racism because of how the system label they and push them down every time. How society separates all of us our skin color and how some have privilege. I saw a video of a young girl born and raised in Japan who didn’t know she was black until she came here to attend high school. It’s sad to see how here we are label and the rest of the world treat people for what we are , humans.
@@djgroopz4952 Hello, malaysian mean its malay from malaysia as Malaysia is a country, NOT a race. The word "malay" is a race. There is a diff between malay singaporean & malay malaysian. When u start living here then u will realise almost everyone on the street is from somewhere; If u work here, u will also realise its vy common to find 50-100 nationalities working in a company. Also, our govt actually put PRs (permanent residents, just like green card in USA) as part of our 5.6 mil populations. The original singaporeans actually only 1 mil, over the years NEW citizens grew & they are ppl came from all over the world & naturalised as citizens.

Hey guys, just to manage expectations, Ashley is living an expat life so she seems very removed from the daily realities of Singaporeans. The locals aren’t untouched by racism and xenophobia. The truth is, if you’re a foreigner in shades of brown, things can get a little tricky when you’re in the thick of local society.
The vast majority Singaporeans are very innocent & oblivious to cultural nuances, but there are some who will display acts of micro-aggression or casual racism in public transportation or elevators. It’s not going to be easy for you to rent a public housing flat unless you rent it from a Malay or Indian homeowner. Agents will ask for your race and filter you out. It will probably also be easier if you have western accents compared to having African accents.
But yes, on the whole, Singapore is a wonderful, peaceful, safe, tolerant country. You will be free from the disgusting racism seen in western countries. It’s my home and the best place in the world for me. It’s by no means perfect, but it can be a heaven for peace loving, productive people.
Agents have to filter out certain races if the rent is in a HDB flat though. There is this thing called ethnic quota by HDB to balance the racial diversity in the area.

Honestly, there is a lot of systemic racism in Singapore as well. Glad to hear that you didn't experience it but that's because you're from the US. Here in Singapore the system and the govt are biased towards people from the west AKA the Expats, so even if you're darker-skinned or black they favour you because you're American or European or even African. However, speak to any brown local like Indians and Malays and brown foreigners like South Asian migrant workers and all of them will have multiple stories and instances to share of systemic racism and daily racist microaggressions.

As a Singaporean, I can tell you that this country has some of the strictest standards of hygiene when it comes to F&B (food and beverage) preparation and restaurant cleaniness, and heavy fines and penalties are imposed on errant restaurants and sellers. There are no unlicensed food stalls anywhere. No idea how she is getting the food poisoning.

When a person eats crappy food full of GMOS and Chemical Additives like the people in the U.S. are subjected to, when you start to eat clean food again you can get a Herxheimer or detox reaction. It's also possible to react to foods you simply aren't used to. I have always heard that Singapore is very clean.

I am Jamaican too I honest never had to acknowledge that I was black. I was just Jamaican. We had Black, White, Asian, Indian we was Jamaican first. We was just Jamaican. We was more proud of the culture that let me know what color we were. After being here in States for 12 years it was constantly force on me state I am black be apart of the black experience in America. My experience is highly influenced by cultural experience of islander. We think differently and we see the world differently.
I appreciate your comment - people place way too much of a focus here that I think it (unintentionally) ends up feeding into creating more racism. I don't mean my comment in any disrespectful way, I just think that a lot of focus is placed on race in the US and it ends up creating a lot of tension whereas in other countries that's not such a big focus.

If you are a dark skinned Westerner visiting Asia, you are not likely to encounter much prejudice. An African American or British person of African decent would most likely get the same amount of respect as their white expat counterparts. It would be a different story if you were a dark skinned migrant worker from a poor country working in those lowly paid jobs the locals won't do.

@Vick Nad nope asians are anti black/ anti-dark GIVEN that you come from a poor background. eg. asians that live in their ethnic countries see western culure as powerful so when they encounter a black person they associate them with a western background and treat them with respect, however, when asians "level up" and move to culturally powerful countries, they look upon darker skinned folks from poorer backgrounds unfavorably and mistreat them (this includes but isn't limited to black people). It's a little more complex than simple anti blackness/ anti darkness (STILL FUCKED UP THO)

I have not experienced racism in Mexico as I have in the United States. But I have gotten a few Bad looks while I was in Mexico City. Where I live I am appreciated for my darker skin tone and my kinky hair. It’s a much different feeling of admiration that people give me.
Food poisoning common in Singapore? I am SIngaporean, I have never seen food poisoning as a common thing. Our Hawker stalls have food hygiene ratings and they have to maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness conducted by our NEA. Sure, if you eat food that is too spicy, you gonna have some tummy upset, food poisoning, seriously? Could it be the food issues in Google? LOL.

I live and work in the South and I tell people all the time. I don't feel like I belong in my own country. Thanks so much for this uplifting conversation.
Also when he asked about why there aren't many black people in Tech, in the South at least we are overlooked. If there were no equal opportunity laws in place, I doubt I would even have a job. I have excellent experience and work performance history but, outpaced by any other person because the opportunities are rare. The majority of my IT class were black so the ratio of us in the workplace is underrepresented. Most black people, I know have moved into other industries but I think things are finally starting to change.

I grew up in Germany... My dad was in the military and retired there. I moved back to the States when I was 24... Was back in Frankfurt within 3 months! I have NEVER experienced as much racism as I have living in the US. A country my father fought for. I joined the military myself to be stationed back overseas and the camaraderie of the military.

Singapore is not free from racism as most Chinese boomers are still very close-minded. I've travelled a great deal and visited Singapore in 1997 for a holiday. Of all the countries I've visited, Singapore is up there. I do hope to revisit it again. I just want to make a special mentioned of how clean it was there and friendliness of the people. We were two black girls travelling alone and we felt safe. My Aunt who is originally from Jamaica and her kids (from America) lived in Sinvapore due to their father being in the military and they absolutely loved it and my cousins eventually want to move back. They made tons of genuine friends there

An unconscious evolutionary drive prompting us Males to activate powerful bonding circuits that help create a loving, nurturing bond. As well as signaling to a man that a woman is in good health and therefore an excellent prospect to bear and raise children. The attraction is a natural one, and oft-times a distraction for us guys...as is the case here because (after actually having to *listen* the presentation again) the Sista is an accomplished, highly educated, goal oriented, and focused woman that would be extremely attractive in that light alone...sans the plunging neckline.

i have a friend just like her who moved from Miami to Singapore for about several months to a year. She is a senior position in HR and also experienced the same thing. I’m so glad i met her and her then boyfriend who also came from Miami. I totally feel her that we asians (especially Singaporeans) are too reserved and avoid saying anything even if something is so glaringly wrong. I battle with this my whole life as a Singaporean as my personal orientation is opposite of it. So glad she’s happy.
I find this conversation so positive and empowered. Really thoughtful questions from the interviewer and thoughtful responses from the interviewee. It makes my heart happy.

Yeah in Singapore, BROWN people (indians, malays, bangladeshis etc) are treated badly... not Black people. So YOU, as a black woman may forget about racism in Singapore, but WE brown people experience it everyday. Trust me, speaking as a Singaporean, no we are not all that fantastic...
@@lishr4536 i think it's more of classism not much of racism because most of low paying wages migrant workers in SG are unfortunately brown people like bangladeshi, indians, indonesian malays.

Every time I see videos with black peoples living anywhere in the world outside of United States you can see the difference in behavior. They are humble well spoken and the nicest people ever. This is because they are treated like humans and respect. Here in America they are forced to act the way some do because of racism because of how the system label they and push them down every time. How society separates all of us our skin color and how some have privilege. I saw a video of a young girl born and raised in Japan who didn’t know she was black until she came here to attend high school. It’s sad to see how here we are label and the rest of the world treat people for what we are , humans.

@@djgroopz4952 Hello, malaysian mean its malay from malaysia as Malaysia is a country, NOT a race. The word "malay" is a race. There is a diff between malay singaporean & malay malaysian.
When u start living here then u will realise almost everyone on the street is from somewhere; If u work here, u will also realise its vy common to find 50-100 nationalities working in a company.
Also, our govt actually put PRs (permanent residents, just like green card in USA) as part of our 5.6 mil populations. The original singaporeans actually only 1 mil, over the years NEW citizens grew & they are ppl came from all over the world & naturalised as citizens.
