- In this episode of The Melanated Files (MFiles) we introduce Angee Floyd, a Comedian and Entrepreneur who has been living in Vietnam for over three years. I caught up with Angee after one of her comedy shows in Saigon and we had a long chat on the side of the road. Angee, a single mother of two first moved to Vietnam as an English Teacher. Shortly thereafter, she took the leap to live life on her own terms by becoming her own boss. Watch to hear her story.

@Ed Ward The sad persona of someone with a backward mind who feels we as black people should continue to suffer for the cause. We are all now free to come and go as we wish to wherever we choose. We as fellow human beings should be supporting and empowering those who have decided to try something different and it has succeeded. Angee with no man by her side consciously researched and chose her path with her precious children beside her who experienced many firsts with delight. Instead of praising her you berate her. You are of no use to fellow black people.

George Duckson I wouldn’t either. We are in Thailand and I’ve homeschooled the entire time. Luckily we have some friends with cool kids so after they are out of school, the kids play. It’s tricky finding balance but not impossible

I lived in Vietnam for 4 months when I was working at one of the universities in Hanoi. By far the most rewarding experience, I've ever had. There was an ease of life that I appreciated. My co-workers and teachers ( who taught me Vietnamese) were amazing to me. Cannot wait to go back

In fact, foreigners are completely wrong when thinking that Vietnam really welcomes you, perhaps you have not surfed social networks for articles related to Vietnamese politics. My country has the right to curse the US and capitalist countries in the worst way possible, that's what the Vietnamese government wants, if someone defends Americans or capitalist countries there will be countless virtual accounts personally attack that person

She's absolutely right about local Vietnamese just being innocently curious about different skin colours and hair textures. And it is NOT just exclusive to black skin and hair. As I white male living in Saigon for a very long time, I cannot count the number of times young people have politely asked (or motioned) to touch the hair on my arms, my beard stubble, or examine my green eyes closely. I've never once felt it was racist, but instead endearingly affectionate and playful. In fact, we usually all end up united in cheerful laughter afterwards. A gentle human touch is the cornerstone of breaking down social barriers. In the West, we build trust and new friends with handshakes. Hand in hand is very intimate too, and rarely considered rude.
That's so called a privilege. Think about this, you see an asian in your country, Would you be curious about their appearance? Would you be so welcoming like they treat to you when you visit Asia? Could asian easily get a well paid teaching job in your country? No, for most of the south east asians, they don't even have a passport. How unfair the world treats asians!

I have lived in America for 2 years and im not gonna lie thay people here are kinda fake. They smile at you, they will talk to you but then if you are not there, they will talk shit about you. I find it very hard to find a TRUE friend here. But oh well, i'm going to college soon so hopefully i can find one there. I'm still trying to adapt to American culture. I just miss Vietnam so much. I had so much fun there. I really wanna come back
I laughed out loud at that part 'cause it is just too accurate we are just really curious most of the time, and find meeting foreigners no matter the race really amusing because by that way we can learn new things. I have to admit genreally most of the time schools would prefer to hire white ppl as teachers over black ones. However the highschool I go to is in the same area as the University of Languages and International Studies as well as National Uni and I see a lot of black teachers on my way to school everyday or during lunch breaks, like, a lot. The owners of the shops and restaurants in the surrounding area seem to be very used to seeing them too, that the teachers can sometimes get a discount if the owner is in good mood.
This is the type of woman that would excel anywhere she decided to live because of her amazing ability to adapt and to be positive.

@Silent Rage I lived in Vietnam in 2017 and it was amazing but he's quite right, Vietnam is still a communist country, there are no opposition parties and dissenting voices that run counter to the State are threatened or shut down. It's important to remember our privilege as foreigners in Vietnam and how unaware we are of the intricacies of daily life for Vietnamese which happens due to not knowing the language and the barrier this creates in understanding the nuances of Vietnamese culture, that being said, Vietnam is welcoming, the people are warm and I concur with most of what the Angee said as it mirrored my experience.
Crazy. But that means maybe it isn't what u think.
Real freedom is available here in America but one must work and contribute because nothing is free.

@@dan-andreinafureanu6046 I don't think so. There's still no mass testing in Vietnam so we the Vietnamese still contact with asymptomatic cases but we still don't know and we can't do anything about it. The government lose track of the original cases. By the way, Vietnam has 30 death cases for now.
Okay, I agree Vietnam is not perfect, but compare it to other countries in the region or to major world powers such as the USA, Brazil or the UK and you will see who is actually failing its population. Now, let us compare Vietnam to a country that also has no mass testing and has lost track of the original pockets or people that introduced the virus, a country that has a similar GDP as Vietnam - my own country Romania.
Total cases (as of 30.08.2020): 86.785 (RO) vs. 1.040 (VN)
Deaths (as of 30.08.2020): 3.578 (RO) vs. 32 (VN)
New cases (as of 30.08.2020): +1.365 (RO) vs. +0 (VN)
So, is she doing better in Vietnam than she would in the USA or in a similar small country like Romania? Yes! Though, I may be wrong and it that case I would like to be educated by somebody here in the comments - I am open to criticism.

She was so right about fact that Vietnamese are curious about a difference skin colors, it's not racism, just curious.
My girlfriend is Vietnamese and she was forced to moved back to vietnam after they found out she was dating a black person. Vietnamese are racist.
Vietnamese don't discriminate like as some other countries, whoever you are, you will be respected in our country.

I remember when I was a child, I learned the song "This Earth is ours" by Truong Quan Luc and put it to music… This song is very popular with Vietnamese children. The most famous lyrics

I have been in Vietnam for a long time, I see here they do not discriminate against people of color and do not discriminate against skin color. Here I am loved by everyone. Many people often look at me, not because they are discriminating but because they are curious. I find Vietnamese people quite friendly and hospitable

This was an absolute wonderful watch. As an American born Vietnamese, this just warmed my heart. And many blessings and good fortunes to this beautiful black queen for having an open mind and open heart.
My boyfriend and I traveled to japan and we loved it so we figured why not travel all over Asia. Next is Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. We hope to eventually move to Vietnam one day!
Love when people give more respect to Vietnam. Remember when I first studied abroad, people only know Vietnam as poor country, Vietnamese war, dangerous country,etc. It hurted me so bad. Vietnam is beautiful country with rich culture and friendly people.

The first impression of Japaneses about Vietnam when they talked to me is A country which drowned in long-term wars. Poor and not safe. But I know what, guess which country's doing so well, much better than some great, superior likes.

There's a lot of downside with living in Vietnam, especially for its citizens. The fact that it has a highly negative immigration rate (many more people leaving than coming), should tell you that it's no heaven on earth. It's a peaceful, quickly developing country with a lot to offer, to be sure, but also very flawed. That's my honest opinion as someone who grew up there.

love the video.. I also completely relate to everything she said from my travels to Vn, everything from riding the scooter and the chaos, to feeling free and unjudged.. Never felt racism in Vn.. But I also didn't expect everyone to love me either. I didn't mind at all folks wanting to find out more about me etc as she described. That said the bottom line is I felt respected as a person in Vn and that is core to the cullture that really appreciate. Excellent interview. I'm here in Vietnam now and she is absolutely correct. I just wish they had a retirement visa. I'm Black, from America and this is my favorite Asian country.
@ don't be fooled by how it may look to you, I'm a Vietnamese who's have been living in Viet Nam for 23 years. And colorism exists in VN much like every SEA countries. Some people might don't say it to your face but what they truly think of you especially if you have a darker skin tone is the opposite of "friendly". Sure, they may act nice in front of you, and that is called mannerism, and Vietnamese mannerism works differently than Americans. it is a good thing that you don't talk ill about your country but keep in mind that they aren't all facts, it can even be propaganda. I'm not here to generalize all Vietnamese will act like that toward dark skin people but there are a lot of individuals who are racist just like white people.

Ranzo, really don't know how I missed this one - it was already 2 years ago, BUT it is excellent! Can't tell you as a parent who drug her kids all over the world how much inspiration it gives me. I was right, those early experiences stay with them and assist them in critical thinking, leadership skills and just be an overall great and happy person. I used to take my 2 children to the Air and Space Museum once and week and just turn them loose. They would school me! Love it sis, carry on!
I traveled through SouthEast Asia alone in 2001 and I was a naive Chinese American female and the kindness I experienced from the locals in Vietnam were truly amazing. When I got lost and asked a woman for directions, she insisted on driving me there. I didn’t speak the language but she kept pointing for me to follow her and we walked to her motorcycle. Another random woman noticed I was reading a guidebook and offered to take me on a tour of the area. People were so kind and expected nothing back in return.

when she said, "you have freedom out here" I felt that. This is exactly how I feel in South Korea. The freedom and safety I feel does not compare to America, at all. There are truly easier ways to live and when you travel you see that.

I recently returned from Vietnam... Ho Chi Minh City or Old Siagon, Hoi An, and Halong Bay my favorite! She is absolutely right and brave to ride the scooter especially in Siagon. I'm black, retired from military and own property in two countries abroad, it's refreshing to see other blacks actually living abroad. It really is not that hard, just take the leap... you will not regret it!

You said you currently own property in 2 countries abroad. Does that include Vietnam?
I think the biggest stumbling block is language and culture. But once you can get past that, Asia is pretty safe.

I’ve had a friend from Vietnam and a few from the Filipines and I will say that they are truly beautiful in the soul as they are visually. Amazing personality and very appreciative.
I’m ashamed to say that when the Filipinos came to my part of the United States to work they were treated badly..next to nothing. So I brought them onto my crew and I was shocked on how excited they were. I wondered why they were so excited and anxious because they were hardly ever near me, being that the Hotel was so large, I only seen them during pre-shift meetings.
I asked them why were they so excited when everyone else was already saying that I, as a 24 year old black guy, was mean and strict. Angie is truthfully speaking because they saw what, like everyone else did, that I was a very hard worker but they also saw that I was mean and strict but very focused on my task.
Both groups told me you that they see that I am constantly smiling and laughing and they seem that other people enjoyed being around me and so they wanted to experience my atmosphere. They observation of people is off the scale and they helped me to understand that about myself which has made me a better person on the inside because we all have that deep off feeling that’s hidden within.
Their attitudes are unrealistic. They appreciated me so much that, unlike my American group, the Vietnamese and the Filipino group would not allow me to do any type of work, lol! They say I work to hard..to much and I can just sit, relax and trust them to do everything. I didn’t like it because (1) I like to clean my way (2) I don’t like to just sit and watch others work. When I say their Observation was off the scale I meant it! I sat, because I didn’t want to offend them, and when I say they cleaned the very same was as I did..they did just that and did not miss a beat.
I’m grateful to have met such a live, proud, honest, gracious and beautiful group of human beings. Eventually I turned them over to another supervisor only because they treating me like a King was not me. I love them all but they were spoiling me to heavily plus I couldn’t take them leaving me because their visa was expiring and the 5 months we spent together we became like a family.
They told me they didn’t like the others and were upset with me but I guaranteed them that their new lead’s personality was on par with mine so they will be happy. They were happy and they took what they learned from me with them and I still have them in my heart and is still living by what or how they saw me.
Their mentality, from what I saw, is “treat me good and I’ll treat you greater”. They know “value” and they know “worth” and they treat people accordingly. It’s a shame and I hate to hear that they are trying to whitewash that uniqueness away. I’ve heard this about both groups and this means that their genuine nature will become corrupt.

Well, actually... there are quite some murder cases by the cops usually when the suspect is in custody. I do love Vietnam and my people for all the good things, many of which are mentioned in this video

I love how Angge can expressed herseft freely and commented about Vietnam’s education without hesitation. And I agree with her, we have ridiculously hard exams system, choosing school for children is not based on that child’s interests but it’s all about his/her parents desire. Kids need to develop their imagination, creativity and most of all independence. I know some so-called adults about my age (20s-27s) still rely on thier parents with daily basis and can not decide anything in their life without parent’s guidances. Sad reality!

Angee is an amazing person and I love this. I am a white guy from New York who has been living in Vietnam since 1995 but who has been here part of each year since 1988. I met a Vietnamese woman in New York in 1976 and were married in 1977... still married. If I could learn Vietnamese then so can Angee so please take the step of confidence that you can learn and then go ahead and learn it. The Vietnamese love word play and Angee can have a ton of fun with some simple spoonerisms (syllable reversal like "hu ai yow = how are you".) People will love that! On my first trip in 1988 I can say it was so different than now. There were still Amerasians all over. America took them in a few years later, Anyway, I remember meeting a group of about 15 black Amerasians hanging out on Le Loi Street (Saigon) and my wife and I took them to the Bach Dang Ice Cream shop on Le Loi Street and had one of the most memorable evenings in my life. Today that would cost a bit of money but back then it was nothing. One interesting thing about Vietnam is that there are people of many ethnic backgrounds and some with very dark skin. Generally speaking people prefer light skin as Angee said but regardless... I don't think that anyone could comprehend the notion of separating people on a public bus according to skin color as was done in parts of American when I was growing up in the 1950s. And Angee is right about being able to do anything with exception political stuff. But I can say for the things I like to do I have never had any issue.

Being Korean-American, I had the blessing to know what life is like outside of America early in my life. Many Americans have no idea how insular US society it is. We claim to be a "diverse" nation that is accepting of all cultures and a melting pot, but any minority knows that you never feel truly accepted and deal with being racially profiled, stereotyped, and marginalized on a frequent basis. I am glad to see more and more African-Americans see that there are better living opportunities for them and not have to endure a situation where they feel stifled.
Truth. It many places it doesn't even feel like a melting pot of any kind -more like a bunch of different communities keeping to themselves and forming stereotypes of "the Other".
Thats because the idea of a successful melting pot does not exist, when you put people together who have different values they are bound to clash with each other. Most eastern asian countries are smart enough to realize this and put severe restrictions on who comes into their country.
@@Lost_Hwasal Thankfully, in Asia, unlike many Western countries they did not enslave millions of people only to claim later that they had no claim to the land and want to preserve racial homogeneity. Therefore their want to preserve their culture can be seen as cultural preservation just like Africa's can. Unfortunately the West decided to take Native land, use African people and work Chinese people and only now want to claim its their land and everyone should get out.

This woman’s attitude is open, honest, and easy going. What she says about the meaning of how words are used in terms of pitch and accent is a very common thing throughout different languages in several African and other countries of the world. Because language is art, the little details have the greatest meanings. I wish that the world prejudice towards Blacks becomes less of a stigma as for the upcoming generations of Black race.

Next to my house, there are two Dutch ladies. They are quite happy living and working in VN. They always greet my dog first then me. Many foreigners drink beer in a shop near my house. They always laugh and relax.
