I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike | NYT Opinion

  • Mary Cain’s male coaches were convinced she had to get “thinner, and thinner, and thinner.” Then her body started breaking down.
At 17, Mary Cain was already a record-breaking phenom: the fastest girl in a generation, and the youngest American runner to turn professional. In 2013, she was signed by the best track team in the world, Nike’s Oregon Project, run by its star coach Alberto Salazar.
Then everything collapsed. Her fall was just as spectacular as her rise, and she shares that story for the first time in the Video Op-Ed above.
Instead of becoming a symbol of girls’ unlimited potential in sports, Cain became yet another standout young athlete who got beaten down by a win-at-all-costs culture. Girls like Cain become damaged goods and fade away. We rarely hear what happened to them. We move on.
The problem is so widespread it affected the only other female athlete featured in the last Nike video ad Cain appeared in, the figure skater Gracie Gold. When the ad came out in 2014, like Cain, Gold was a prodigy considered talented enough to win a gold medal at the next Olympics. And, like Cain, Gold got caught in a system where she was compelled to become thinner and thinner. She developed disordered eating to the point of imagining her own death.
“America loves a good child prodigy story, and business is ready and waiting to exploit that story, especially when it comes to girls,” said Lauren Fleshman, who ran for Nike until 2012. “When you have these kinds of good girls, girls who are good at following directions to the point of excelling, you’ll find a system that’s happy to take them. And it’s rife with abuse.”
We don’t typically hear from the casualties of these systems - the girls who tried to make their way in this system until their bodies broke down and they left the sport. It’s easy to focus on bright new stars, while forgetting about those who disappeared. We fetishize these athletes, but we don’t protect them. If they fail to pull off what we expect them to, we abandon them.
But Mary Cain’s story isn’t over. By speaking out, she’s making sure of that.

You don't need to be a nutritionist or a rocket scientist to know at 114lb she ain't losing 50lb. Look she just made a stupid mistake which cost her thousands and thousands of dollars and most importantly her health. Everything she did, she did to herself. Plus, there is no guarantee that she would have been any better than she was in high school. Her body peaked in high school and she had mistakenly thought she would continue to get faster year after year. Everyone has a year they peak and she peaked in high school. Her health problems were a direct result of her trying to maintain the crazy ideals she had set up for herself.

Even as a man, when I competitively ran, 110 miles per week, coaches would say that I needed to be thinner. I was 126 lbs.@ 5’8”. She could easily moved over to train with Shalane Flanagan's group at Nike if she felt abused by Alberto. Alberto's athletes were lean. Galen, Centrovitz Goucher,, Mo Farah, Sifan Hassan, Mark Decker, Jordan Hasay. That's why you gotta be smart and makes your own decisions. Don't trust anyone. You know yourself best and have your own best interest in mind. Sure, listen to a coach after you check what they say, but she should have known they were idiots from the start. She should have done her research and known the information they were giving her was the wrong information.
Edit: I made this comment not seeing the full video so I didnt take Into account she was 16. I understand now that she was very young. I would probably make the same mistake when I was her age if I was in her shoes. Still, moral of the story is don't trust everyone because only you have your absolute best interest in mind. Don't let people make decisions for you.

@@clydefloyd8751 you're missing a lot of points here. Firstly, she was, what, 16? Salazar was one of, if not the, top running coach. Would anyone believe a 16 year old girl is doing the "right thing" by refusing to be coached by a Nike-endorsed program headed by him? Secondly, the information wasn't out there. If her assertions are correct, all the assistant coaches were friends with Salazar and no one would have ever crossed him or given critical reviews for people to see.

Hearing your story is very touching, i myself ran cross country and middle distance track 800m to 1500m, i was good at it running my best time at 1.51 on the 800m it was a massive achievement to say that i could compete with some of the best in the world, i never trained it was clear that i had natural genetics and the ability to run, but when i did start training under vigorous training regimes, i was burned out i could not run even close to under 2 minutes. i almost felt like these so claimed sport professionals did not understand what running was about. I did not run to win, i just did it and pushed myself every race to stay in front whatever the cost, you love running because its about you at the end of the day you are what make it happens and achieve those win and record breaking times, and then you get these Nike coaches who basically make it look like you wont achieve nothing without them, but everything you did to get their was all you. its good to have people that support you but regardless you should only listen to yourself and push yourself. I may of made it as a career athlete but even though i was good at it, i was not happy, athletic ability and personality come as a package, and that why i did not strive for that career they recognize your ability but forget that your human after that you feel used and under appreciated. glad you spoke up and your away from that negativity

To me this sounds more like a cautionary tale about women in sports and how women arent biologically designed to push themselves so hard without immediate repercussions.
This is also why people dont care about female sports: when we watch athletes we watch superhumans, peak physical condition that only the 0.001% and lower can achieve, be it because of physical or mental restrictions.
Watching the female marathon with times below average of the average man....well thats not superhuman or remarkable. Its mondane and boring.
In my eyes she just broke down. She couldnt do what was being asked of her. But i dont blame her. Its ok. She wasnt strong enough, not because of her body but because of her mind. What she calls "abuse" is training for any other athlete.
People push you to your limits so you can destroy those limits and be faster, stronger.
Its like in the military: there they actually abuse men physically and especially mentally, to break down your barriers and rebuild you once you are broken, with discipline and training.
