Corrections/Nuances below*. The stat that says that Berlin is a net negative for Germany is quite outdated, and it's important to note that many German cities are quite strong, economically, which skews Berlin down more than, let's say, other French cities and Paris.
Make the episode explaining the reality on the ground in Gaza and what the IDF is doing with German and American weapons. I will support the channel if you make this video.
I am a reguar at Berghain (I even have the Berghain logo tattooed) and can confirm that this is pretty accurate and not cringe like many other videos about Berghain.
I think it is well researched. Just one think was strange. That someone thinks, that the bouncers would more likely refuse people, that do not look like a german person.
I remember seeing this name in a dream where it swapped places with Washington DC. The sea level was different, and North America was sparsely populated. The world capital was on the Azores. The dream was set in a different zodiac age.

I loved the fact that in order to explain what's inside this outstanding building, you explained all the context and history behind it. I'm an architect and listening the impact that war and Berlin's division had in one single building and how the past still has a huge impact on today was a wonderful journey. Thank you for this video.
😂😂 its so true. I used to go to the Subclub a lot and you'd see a group like that queuing up in the freezing g cold knowing there's not a chance they're getting in but its Glasgow so it's better not to say anything and let the bouncers deal with it andd they're all sound.
@@Eighty94 that description is so condescending and pretentious. I’d bet the British dudes being described are more fun to be around than the snotty person describing them
If you get inside, its mostly just another club. but i have to admit there is a special atmosphere surrounding it. Also the Hitman level "Berlin" is a reference to that club, its a great level
I remember the first time in Berlin I was with a group of 4 other friends and we were all dressed up to go clubbing but none of us even wanted to attempt Berghain out of fear of waiting in line for hour only to be rejected. We asked a local where we should go and after taking one good look at our group he said Berghain with such a confidence that it propelled us to get there. Long story short we went, queued for what must have been 15 minutes and once we got to the door we all got the sign to go in. Granted we were a mixed sex and mixed race group, and not too flashy but we got in very easily. Needless to say the whole experience was a blast. I left the club about 16 hours later, long after my friends had already left :)) Also probably the greatest feeling is leaving the club during daytime after having experienced one of the most unique nights. Stepping out into the sun and seeing there's about 300 people waiting in line outside truly leaves you speechless.
I went to Berghain a few weeks ago on a recent work trip to Berlin. I'm 33 now, but I've been multiple times since I was 19. As some other posters have said, Berghain is *just* a club, and you can find many spinoffs of it in other cities in the world. What Berghain has that many of the others don't, though, is: scale (it's massive), commitment to aesthetic (you don't find an old East German power plant anywhere anymore), freedom (you can kinda do whatever you want within reason), and originality (it is the remnant of an older era of Berlin and partying that doesn't really exist organically anymore). The world changes, and so do the meanings of places, but what has remained so impressive about Berghain is its ability to maintain its identity and values in a constantly changing world. It abhors voyeurism and nightlife tourism, and I am fully behind the club's rejection of people who are there for the wrong reasons, even if it means I've been rejected 30% of the time for not being German. Just like the Brooklyn hipster aesthetic has permeated many corners of the globe, so has Berghain/Berlin-style nightlife. It's the CBGBs of this era of techno. On my most recent visit, I did feel like the crowd was becoming a bit of a parody of itself, but maybe that's just me being 33 instead of 27 (my previous visit there). I still had a great time, but something inside of me felt like the era of Berghain would be soon coming to a close. I feel 5-10 more years.
Techno has gotten really popular recently, similar to how electro and progressive house got really popular and commercialised in the 2010s. So there are a lot of people who jump on the bandwagon without that genuine natural love for the music, and are just not self aware enough to appreciate the way crowds and atmospheres at techno events should be. So yeah, I'd say clubs like this are going to quickly deteriorate in terms of enjoyability for the people who truly love techno and only add positively to the atmosphere of the dancefloor. You see more and more dickheads taking stickers off their cameras to take pictures inside clubs these days, it should result in an instant lifetime ban
@@Dom-fw7nz So is there a no filming policy in many clubs then? What stickers are you talking about?:D Do they make you put on a sticker on your camera?:D
@@-AxisA- yes in many clubs (especially in Berlin) no cameras are allowed. They put stickers on your phone cameras. It makes a better experience for everyone. Taking it off is insane disrespect and selfishness.
Sven Marquart has stated in interviews that they pick the guests aiming to create the right blend of people. Each night is supposed to be an unforgettable party, it takes a certain blend of ages, sexualities, nationalities and styles. Yes, there are some guidelines that will help your chances to get in as stated in the video, but often it comes down to pure chanse. Like the doorpolicy or not, if you have been in there, you can't deny they do an amazing job in selecting a great crowd. It in not just the young, cool and beautiful. It is not just middle-aged gay men, or only germans, or only tourists. It is all kinds of people. Since everyone knows they might be turned away, everyone who gets in enters the building with a feeling of euphoria, a feeling of having been selected. It is all a game of psychology, and it works! You get in and you feel this amazing rush of exitement that carries you into the party. I have been to Berghain many times, and that feeling still hits me every time. Berghain is for those who got in that night. They will experience something amazing, but this magic trick only works if four out of every five people in the line gets rejected.
Sounds like they enjoy wasting the time of paying clientele. Sounds like a gross & elitist ideology with a veneer of mystique to make it more palatable to posers. Have fun with all that, I'll just find a welcoming little club with an approachable door staff because I value not having my time wasted.
As someone who loves the techno scene here, I really appreciate that this comment section is so understanding and didn't immediately judge the club for being "exclusive". There are plenty of great clubs in Berlin and yet so many tourists try to get into Berghain, simply because they want to tick it off their bucket list. That spirit can bring a nervous, judgy and unrelaxed vibe to the club. If you come to Berlin and are interested in the techno scene, here are some lesser known (outside of Berlin) but great places: - RSO: Similar style as Berghain, dark, fast, monotous and meditative - Else: Outdoor club with varying genres, great soundsystem and amazing atmosphere - Club Ost: More popular among early 20s crowds, also varying genres and mostly good vibes Most importantly: Don't come when there's a famous DJ, because it will attract tourists, more rejections. Check the DJs out on Soundcloud and follow the sounds you like. And welcome to the scene!
Went to Tresor while in Berlin, of course more of a 'mainstream' club, but the atmosphere walking towards towards the basement, with smoke blocking any vision more than 1 meter away, stroboscopes, the metal bars everywhere, the hard techno, everything, was unmatched by any club after.
i am a canadian and really wanted to try and get in to berghain. i just want to come and dance to techno and understand the vibe of the people in there. is it that frowned upon for tourists? or are you talking about the people that dont understand the scene and just are coming because of the berghain fame?
@@waterturtle2919 Most people that go to Berghain are regulars. Yes, Berghain could easily fill their floors with the hordes of tourists that want to get in on a given weekend-but they don't, for the reasons outlined in the video. So marketing may make you come through the door the first time. The experiences, friendships and adventures are what makes you come back.
@@theceohq It couldnt fill the floor with hordes of tourists because that would destroy its marketing scheme. Thats the entire point behind artificial rarity and the same principle thats behind diamonds. If it was a club with regular entry policies, it would be just another edgy club in Berlin. No one would talk about it, no one would care.
Found your channel through this video, great visuals! I went to Berghain 4 years ago and made a video about it, one thing that took me by surprised was it's way more warm and comfortable inside than it looks from the outside, radiators are on the walls, the panorama bar feels like a swanky bar with art on the walls which serve cocktails. The ice cream parlour is also a fun addition. Wild place!
the first time I went I ate icecream with a middle aged office worker from Hamburg who spent 2 hours lamenting how much he hated his job, truly a unique place
@StonedSpagooter I think if you're into techno and club culture then you're generally gonna give the right vibe to the door staff. I think it's hard to fake, and hard to define.
Fantastic work!!! This is like an award winning, long form New Yorker article in illustrated video format. Content Creators like you are making this era a Golden Age of knowledge transfer!
Thought to myself "oh boy, here's another clueless Berghain video" but was pleasantly surprised. Nice job adding the history of Berlin and talking about how a person's vibe is what gets them in, not following the unwritten "rules". Also, the model is quite accurate so great job on that too!
Ended up in front of Berghain after I raved a night through Berlin and Berghain was on my way home to my hostel and I thougt why not give it a try. Either I get on or I go to bed. Queue was not to long and after 20 minutes I stand in front of the bouncer and he let me in. Was 100% sure not to get in because I wore the total opposite of what is recomended. Had a great night, but had to leave around noon to get my train because of a strike of the Deutsche Bahn :D Long story short, would go there again but never ever would I wait in front of Berghain if the queue is longer than 40 minutes to an hour.
Went to berghain once. One of the most entertaining and surreal atmospheres I’ve experienced. Met and talked with lots of strangers (locals and travelers), music was great, and each dance floor had its own vibe. In all, there was an energy to that place as mostly everyone was there to enjoy themselves in their own way ☺️
Wonderful video, thank you! As someone with visual impairment, the fonts and the subtitles were really hard to read though. But the visuals and the production value are through the roof as always.
I love berghain, have been dozens of times... never once rejected! It is a bit ironic because I went there initially not even knowing much about techno or berlin clubbing, but I guess they liked what they saw from me and let me in regardless. It turned out to be something way beyone what I expected, a totally immersive experience where yes the crowd does really matter. It is hard to put into words. I love the place and will return when I can.
What made them accept you? (It came out rude but it is a genuine question). Did you have to dress a certain way or have a certain amount of money or something like that?
@chamelion2879 Let's just say that I look like I'd be at home in the Laboratory. Large septum piercing, bridge piercing between my eyes, gay on the harder side of things... But one of my former colleagues from work who's a very clean and proper blonde girl right out of an Enyd Blyton's kids book, managed to pass the door and had quite the adventure of her life that she wasn't expecting nor was prepared for. 🤣. I don't know how, but she managed to catch a glimpse of the Lab, and she remembered it vividly. Some of my friends are more mainstream looking and just pass the door without issues either. I'd say you can be a tourist, and look like one, but you should wear or express on your face the idea that you're prepared to experience it fully and not be a spectator at the zoo. Another door that's supposed to be difficult but it's just a question of vibe and looks or dress code is the KitKatclub, another wonderful club where you can be yourself without much limits. If you're half rejected at KitKat, just undress and you'll pass, as you can be naked. They'll prefer that over an outfit that doesn't fit well with the crowds of the night.
I got to go to Berghain for CTM as a guest of one of the headliners for the festival and had full run of the place more or less. They let us into the club a few hours early for soundcheck and got to meet all the staff and management which was super cool. Gave us access to the green rooms and let us have all the food and drinks from the green rooms we pleased. Was really cool to see beyond what regular patrons who get in are able to see, we also had our own door we got to use to the left of the main door everybody lines up for. We literally got to break all the rules of the line, being foreigners dressed however we wanted and getting to talk to each other in line. A group of about 10 of us all got to go as part of my producer friends rider. Still have the orange stickers they put over my phone cameras even though I don’t even have that phone anymore. It was certainly quite the experience being from the North American west coast rave scene getting that kind of access in such an exclusive club. One of the greatest memories I will ever have
@@jamesdrummond7684 we got to break the rules of waiting in line because we were guest listed. Management literally came out and met us to bring us in. We got to stand to the left of the line just chatting amongst ourselves, we got in and we behaved. We didn’t do anything against the rules inside by any means and I don’t know where you may be conceiving this from what I wrote. You’d think if we were hanging out with the crew that we were pretty well behaved 😂, I also don’t know how you took my comment for anything but showing my admiration of the place which would imply that we respected it
@@jamesdrummond7684 can you explain to me what exactly we did incorrectly? When I say loud and obnoxious what I mean is that we got to stand to the left of the line and chat as a group of friends stoked to see their friend about to play at Berghain about to be let in our own door by management while everybody else had to stand in line all serous. Yeah, we broke that rule because we had permission to break that rule.. management literally came out and met us at the door to bring us in. We still all got stickers on our phones. Nobody took any pictures. We got to have an experience as a group of friends from a far away place that not many people get to do. We didn’t do anything unbecoming inside, we had fun, we were allowed access to the green rooms and to help ourselves to food and drinks that all the artists are welcome too as we were guests of an artist. I don’t understand what you think we did wrong but we certainly behaved ourselves well and we didn’t disrespect any rules inside the club at all. Dunno where you may be getting that from
The narrator's voice perfect cadence at 92bps plus the choice in the background music - aided and backed by outstanding 3D renderings and visuals -, will rocket this channel to #1 on any social media in no time. Kudos. Thank you for sharing your content.
Regular here and can say most was pretty accurate. Been going there since 2015-ish and never got rejected opposite to a hand full of friends which are also regulars but had bad luck on a specific day. My personal highlight is enjoying a yoghurt-orange ice-cream on a Sunday afternoon, or even watch the sundown from the panorama windows. Klubnachts are all unique, it's never the same vibe/people/music in there. Which leads to a few amazing party memories but also horrible ones when the atmosphere was totally off and even kinda threatening. I've made good friends there as it's a safe-space for weirdos to totally expressing oneself not having to hide or assimilate certain behaviours and more eccentric ways. Many artists and creatives like myself. And that's really about it- it's made by "outsiders" to "outsiders" so there isn't a formula on how to get in. And I really do believe that the harder you try the more "out of water" you make yourself seem. I go to the events that interest me musically or when friends are playing to support and that's it- never put much more of thought into it. And if it ever happens that I get rejected is unfortunate but at the end it's them missing an interesting guest for their night. Peace out!
I’ve had the best nights of my life in laboratory, Berghain, Panorama and the garden. It’s a banging place. However it’s not the only brilliant club in Berlin. There’s many many other venues where you can have similar experiences. Berghain is special though. I’m a British Berliner and this video was so well researched it was uncanny. That graphic of Sven is a famous piece of street art in Westberlin that was my phone background for a year. Also I’ve seen Sven walking around with his mum in Prenzlauer Berg before 😂 😁
i dont know who you are or what your usual content is like, but this just got posted in the berlin reddit and as a former berghain enjoyer, this made me laugh so i will subscribe :) good video.
As a Berliner whose been in Berghain a few times I can say that the way Sofie described the experience of standing in line is spot on, but I have a couple of additions/comments: It’s hilarious and completely tru that having a backpack significantly increases ur chances of getting in, the part about the vibe fits too, more than the clothes u wear, Berghain doesn’t have a Dresscode I would say, it’s all vibes, but black docmartens boots are better than white Jordan’s, then again I’m a white, blonde finance bro who doesn’t drink or take drugs so my vibe is not really the vibe😂😂😂. Regardingthe bouncers, yes you pretty much always have Sven there and up to around 5 others, with sometimes some walking around. These 6 bouncers are constantly sifting through the crowd, meaning u need to get ur act straight as soon as ur like 30-50m away from the entrance, they also talk to eachother, funny enough in code, they talk in numbers, like cops giving codes to certain types of behaviors. You should not have your phone out in those last 50m. Also if u don’t have guestlist, don’t get into the guestlist line. When it comes to arriving there there are 3 things I can say: Never really go there expecting to get in, plan another club or maybe 2 to go to if it doesn’t work out, go there after you’ve been to KitKat on a Saturday, meaning u line up at Berghain at around 5/6am on Sunday, by that point the line is tiny. If it isn’t, skip it to the last like 50m. As Hoog mentioned, the line is filled with internationals, who’ve prolly been standing there for hours, they won’t make a fuss and ruin their chance to get in and it’s not worth standing in line for more than 15 min. If someone does make a fuss, ignore him, it will most likely hurt him more than you. Last thing I would say, when you dress for Berghain, don’t be flashy in any sense. Be casual, but Berliny u Kno. As for the club, the location is awesome, it’s huge, spacious, and the music is quite good at times, but more than once or twice, or thrice is not a vibe. The thing with it being open the whole weekend is that on one hand ye u can party all weekend, but on the other hand everyone is fucked up, the vibe is grimy and druggy, the air is stuffy and reeks of piss (mainly because on the ground floor right next to the entrance and main stairwell there are booths where you can piss on people willing to be pissed on), the floors are sticky, the people aren’t really friendly, it’s dark as hell, but in a meh way, and doesn’t really feel all to welcoming. Then again I’m biased because I like clean clubs, good atmosphere, and so on. If you like sex clubs, or techno clubs with variety i recommend the KitKat club, my personal favorite and the one I frequent regularly. On Saturdays it has 7 floors, with a variety of techno and other arts, a sauna, good beds and such for sex, very inventive costumes (usually worn by women) and just a very friendly and welcoming vibe, and a clear Dresscode so you don’t have to worry about this whole vibe bs (although vibes and being not too fucked up before you enter are important). Generally I would say (if it’s not a big event) get in line at around 22:45/2300, then you have to wait barely 20min and they are more lenient on Dresscode.
Holdup, there are golden shower booths? I’m from NL and always kinda wanted to atleast try to get into Berghain but I honestly think this made me rethink that tbh. Like say your dancing and some piss drenched mf touches you, hell the fuck no. I always thought I atleast somewhat fitted the vibe enough that I had a chance but nvm thanks for saving me from this huge letdown lmao.
@@vommir. I mean kinks are fine, I don’t judge we all have some, but I’d say things like golden showers are best kept in spaces where there aren’t a ton of people bumping into each other hahaha. Like it’d ruin my night if some piss drenched guy gets in my aura and now I’m drenched in piss too, I’d just go back to the hotel, clean up and go to a more normal club lmao.
The planning of the Berghain reminds me of a cow barn: no dead ends, no sharp corners, designed for toddler-like behavior, easily cleanable, openings for a “Garden”.
I have so much respect for the vibe curation of berghain, as a massive German techno fan it’s on the bucket list for sure. A lot of other videos skip over it’s origins (and current status) in the gay community and talk about the exclusivity as gimmicky rather than as a necessity. Tourists have a tendency to gawk, act inappropriately, and scare off regulars. Weeding out the people who won’t fit in allows the people who do a more comfortable, safer environment. Their number one goal is to maintain the atmosphere and I think they’ve succeeded.
The 1st and only time I've been here with some friends most of us had no idea it was that hard to get in. I still don't know how we managed to enter and others not. But we all remember this place has one of the best club we've been, it's special and I hope they'll keep it that way as long as possible.
Berghain is an epic party. I have been 4 times, on each visit to Berlin, and while the door policy might seem tough, it creates an atmosphere that I have not found at any other club in the world. I have been part of the techno scene since the late 90s, and even as a 40 something man, I never felt out of place at Berghain.
I love the story of people at Netherland's Beyond Festival where they made pop-up Berghain, just so people can stand in the line and then get rejected.
There are some other clubs in Berlin where a lot of wild wild things happen. Truly people being "free" together and exploring each other out in the open. Such a wild city.
12:35 - If it was just another "exclusive" nightclub it would be boring, but as you explained it had a fair bit more thought put into the design than I'd expect of such a place, which makes it a lot more interesting
Amazing. From the sound design, to the usage of 3D models and textures. What a pleasant journey this was to be on and discover Berghain. I am impressed by your combined skill.
It´s actually a classic marketing strategy, nothing new. Once you're inside it's just another underground club with a labyrinth of passages and dark rooms. And a great sound system indeed.
well just an underground club is an understatemet. Yes it is true what you say that it is a "club", it is just that the whole architecture, all details, the sound system like you said, the strictly selected public makes it unique, like a perfectly designed piece of art.
Sick video, I don’t watch RUclips much anymore but this was a very well realized video and got your final point across super effectively, loved the humor too man
Hands down one of the best videos i have watched on youtube ever! And i’m talking about the direction, narration, artwork, progression of the video, music, script narration, everything! Great work man! I have been to Berghain but couldn’t enter. But i’m sure i’ll go inside one day, and that too very soon!
I used to went there frequently so I had the privilege to skip the queue and could get in immediately, but this was 10 to 20 years ago. I had a great period of time between the age of 20 and 30, now my life has a different content and I don't do clubbing anymore in my first 40's.
Sounds like me haha...I used to fly in from London every month. I always got in. Like you, I'm now in my 40s and don't go clubbing anymore, different priorities now. Still in love with the music though.
The answer to the question in the title starts at 09:30 And I would highly recommend @Hoog to change the title to something less misleading because I didn't care for a 9 minute history lesson and a dramatic story of the average Berghain goer. I just wanted to know what's inside. A simple 2min render would have sufficed.
Went to Berghain last weekend. What a vibe, what a party. I’ve been to different parties in Berlin and around Europe, and, no other club can compare to it. Had the best party experience of my life.
This is a perfect example of storytelling, I was visually hooked (and i have the attention span of a drug addicted goldfish) from start to finish. Please please please continue to refine and love your craft, what a wonderful channel to stunble upon.
Best techno I've ever heard inside...felt so lucky to make it! The bathrooms were an experience in itself. Great video, loved hearing about some of the history!
I moved from Berlin almost 10 years ago after spending almost 3 years there, and at times, I surely miss many parts of it, including Berghain. I was there first time in 2016 with some friends, we showed up late on a sunday morning and with our pop-rock looking style, we barely got in to see Carl Craig spin. Anyways, I've been there countless times and been lucky enough to only have been rejected once or twice. While it is indeed a game of chance (since they are trying to create a perfect mix) there are some solid tricks to get in. The great thing is that you can see the colest goth style, edgy people, dancing next to the less sexy 40 year old German fat guy in a red washed out T-Shirt, and that is what is so cool about. But like I said, there are some solid ways to get in, such as darker rather than colorful clothing, being a little older, e.g. 35, rather than 19, not being to animated, smiley and happy, coming alone as a man (Berghain is a reincarnation of Ostgut which was more of a pure gay club), not coming there drunk or high in any obvious wat, but don't look to "sharp" either, in general etc. All of these are generalisations that "tend" to work but any rules can be broken at anytime by Sven or any other doormen. The one thing that surprises me is that it is still open and if my maths are correct, it would have been 20 years this year (2024). I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. I haven't been there since 2016 so I wouldn't know what it is like now with a new generation that might have been like 3 years old when I was there the first time, but some things don't age well and it might be time for a farewell party soon.
I lived in Berlin for a couple of years in the early 2000s in a strange apartment on Mariannenplatz 1. It was walking distance to Berghain. It wasn't a big deal to get in then. I remember a giant Wolfgang Tilmans photo on one of the floors. One of the best clubs I've ever been to in my life.
Best club in the world! I go to Berlin 2-3 times a year just to go. Last time i queued 7 hours… long. More than anything else, the people and community are what make this club so special. I always find it full of an open, creative, fashionable, gorgeous collection of the most interesting people. Doctors, lawyers, DJs, models, leather daddies, gremlins, and wide-eyed first timers. Sven let me in last time. He was wearing Mugler boots and an Adidas kilt. Icon.
Oh ive been here. Was invited by a friend named Gladys to go clubbing, not really into it but she insisted. His friend says I'd be in for a "baptism by fire"... Didn't know the history of this club nor know what it is about, but i saw a lot of gay people, and i was like "oh... I think Im gonna get puked on tonight" Got in at around 11PM, line was unexpectedly short even though it was a saturday, like waay shorter than what the video showed. I dont think the people there were even waiting to get in, more like hanging out outside. We kinda waited outside but Gladys was just waiting for another gay friend to arrive. Got in, music was boring. Went to the basement, i hear wheezing for some reason. They're having fun while i was just there at the basement sitting on a stool looking very bored. Went to the bathroom, at least two cubicles were closed, they're having a fuck party inside. Went back, Gladys took me upstairs with his friends, New people asked if i wanna fuck in bad English. Said I'd rather go home and sleep. They laughed at me. The repititive music killed whatever anticipation i had, it was not even good. Idk why the video Said theres different music venue in each floor, it isnt, same DJ controlling all the speakers on the main floor. Song that ruined it for me was a heavy base song with a little boy singing "1, 2, 3.. 10, 9,8... Kiss me in the night" in German. Might be mishearing it since my german is worse than a kindergarten, but that phrase kept on repeat all night, the only thing that changed was the accompaniment tempo or instrument playing, but the base is ever present. Gladys had fun, i did not. Idk what's so great about that place
@@kittikorn6674 yes, either a syth or some vocaloid stuff.. sounds like a little boy, high pitched but definitely does not sound like a girl at all... if i have to guess, its a gay dude speaking sexily then they increased the voice pitch digitally. couldve been the DJ
I am in no position to fathom the idea of visting this club. I cannot imagine the state of mind that Berghain regulars have. My life could not be further from theirs, which is the exact reason why they fascinate me so much. I would love to understand where they come from in life, what they are up to and how the got into this kind of clubbing. I wonder, what would have had to happen in my life that I would be one of them?
Your life would be the exact same bro, the only difference is you get high in a club for as many hours as you want listening to techno. A lot of "normal" people do this with booze and their favourite poison, usually cigarettes and alcohol listening to some old school rock for hours on end. Who's to say the guys raving on different chemicals are doing any harm?
I got in there once, must be a decade ago though. I didn't even knew anything about Berghain before and mostly learned of all the hype just later. I went there in a group of four, one girl, one more or less obviously gay dude, another dude and me - the girl and the gay dude were kinda regulars. I remember they were the most nervous though, I said I don't even really want to get in, I rather go for breakfast (like 5-6pm on sunday), the gay dude said "great additude!", me "not an additude, I mean it!". Well as said, we got in - I remember Sven the bouncer seems tuff on first glance and well he probabaly is but he got that certain sensitivity for people. I didn't payed much attention to how the crowd was selected but now I think about it, it was quite nice - you know no phony people, a wild mix of very diffrent characters but all authentic in some way. For my personal expierence, I wasn't wrong with my inuition to rather go for breakfast, I just not enjoyed it that much because it is so heavily crowded, so not really space to dance and the soundsystem seemed a bit too good for my ears, meaning it was a bit too loud so is was rather hurtful. Besides that I can see how people are really enjoying it there but I guess that's just not me - although another comment mentioned how the bouncer selectes by if he thinks if the person in line can handle it and I felt perfectly fine there, so I guess they were not wrong it that sense. Although I could understand how many people might not be fine handling it, so the selective entry might make sense beyond the marketing-standpoint. Like the Britts described in the video - like dudes what do you even want there, no way you are comfortable in that place... Anyway I only stayed for 2-3h and went for my breakfast which I personally enjoyed much more. But yeah after I learned more about all the hype of Berghain I do enjoy to tell people I was cool enough to get in and I might even was a bit too cool for that place to stay :D ...anyway if you honestly think you can enjoy yourself in there you will have a good chance of getting in, if you are just in line because of the hype it's probably not worth to take a shot, there should be something else attracting you - in my case it was just a bit of curiosity and my friends.
I’ve been to berghain about 3 times and got in each time. My wife and I are from America and on our first visit we were being shown around Berlin by a German friend. He would go every weekend to Berghain just to get rejected. When we came with him, they let us in. Everyone kept talking about how amazing this club was, that it had the best sound system and lighting and all of that jazz. It was just an abnormally large club with very small shot glass sizes. I’ve been to clubs in Atlanta with better lights, drinks, and sounds. I didn’t understand what was so great about it. I did have fun and you will come across people having sex if you want to see that. Also, The Lavortory section was closed due to an STD outbreak lol
There is this very sad undertone to techno culture in general, a lot of the glam is a delusion. In the end, the scene essentially harbours angst, drug abuse and denial of ones self and fear of others. I definitely enjoyed some of my time, but eventually you start noticing how broken and afraid a lot of these people around you are, drowning their insecurities and sorrows in social validation, sexual gratification and drugs. So much for the STD outbreak as well.
Create a mystery around it and have a name in the world, is what makes it unique. People talk about it, cause they know the person listening knows the name. You talk about clubs in Atlanta, you don't mention their name, cause you know people don't know the names anyway. This is what makes the difference.
I very rarely leave comments on RUclips, but the commentary, visuals and overall production quality is great. I subscribed, liked and will definitely be back!
As a Spaniard originally San Antonio, Ibiza I have seen and/or experienced things in the Lab that are absolutely and extremely way, WAY beyond anything I've ever witnessed at the super clubs from back home 😉

The stat that says that Berlin is a net negative for Germany is quite outdated, and it's important to note that many German cities are quite strong, economically, which skews Berlin down more than, let's say, other French cities and Paris.

@@tastyboi77 the bouncer next to entrence is also inspired by sven, also just to make clear, Club Holle was inspired by few clubs not only berghein
I found out about Berghain because of Hitman. That really is the best level.
Except the dark rooms. Sadly there aren't many clubs out there that have dark rooms and differently themed sex-positive rooms.
I left the club about 16 hours later, long after my friends had already left :))
Also probably the greatest feeling is leaving the club during daytime after having experienced one of the most unique nights.
5-10 years will pass by quick! Not that long.

They will experience something amazing, but this magic trick only works if four out of every five people in the line gets rejected.
this is some facts
Sounds like they enjoy wasting the time of paying clientele. Sounds like a gross & elitist ideology with a veneer of mystique to make it more palatable to posers.
Have fun with all that, I'll just find a welcoming little club with an approachable door staff because I value not having my time wasted.
Make each second spent inside a reward, and the patrons will behave themselves more. Easy as that.
Such a great summary
faaaacts
As someone who loves the techno scene here, I really appreciate that this comment section is so understanding and didn't immediately judge the club for being "exclusive". There are plenty of great clubs in Berlin and yet so many tourists try to get into Berghain, simply because they want to tick it off their bucket list. That spirit can bring a nervous, judgy and unrelaxed vibe to the club.
If you come to Berlin and are interested in the techno scene, here are some lesser known (outside of Berlin) but great places:
- RSO: Similar style as Berghain, dark, fast, monotous and meditative
- Else: Outdoor club with varying genres, great soundsystem and amazing atmosphere
- Club Ost: More popular among early 20s crowds, also varying genres and mostly good vibes
Most importantly: Don't come when there's a famous DJ, because it will attract tourists, more rejections.
My personal recommendation, just across the street of Club Ost: renate. Best vibes ever
i dont recomend looking the dj up at all. just go in without any expectations
Void club also plays techno sometimes, a lot smaller but it's easy to get into and cheap
i am a canadian and really wanted to try and get in to berghain. i just want to come and dance to techno and understand the vibe of the people in there. is it that frowned upon for tourists? or are you talking about the people that dont understand the scene and just are coming because of the berghain fame?
This must be the building with the most interesting stories in the world tbh
The marketing behind it is probably the only truly interesting thing about it.
@@waterturtle2919 Most people that go to Berghain are regulars. Yes, Berghain could easily fill their floors with the hordes of tourists that want to get in on a given weekend-but they don't, for the reasons outlined in the video.

Peace out!

nice production man. i really enjoyed the mood, style, grading and pace of your video.
Thank you :)
That's a good summary, danke!

Their number one goal is to maintain the atmosphere and I think they’ve succeeded.
gotta say your ad transitions are some of the best i have seen in this site.

The Tunnel Club, or whatever it was called, in New York in the '80's was kind of like that.
well just an underground club is an understatemet. Yes it is true what you say that it is a "club", it is just that the whole architecture, all details, the sound system like you said, the strictly selected public makes it unique, like a perfectly designed piece of art.
i was watching this very seriously till i heard geopold voice acting 😭😭
What a gorgeous video. Just amazing, all the history and careful design of the place.
Thank you Mark!
Excellent as always, and the merch is brilliant. Will be grabbing one for sure.
@@hamelindabell1222 did you partake in the filthy activities that go down in there?
What is the appeal of this kind of life/event? I’m not judging just always been intrigued (I used to live next to Fabric in London).
the collab that i never knew i needed until now
hoog deserves 50 million subs tbh and I don't think anyone would argue with that
Thank you Ryan :)
Man...amazing and impressive production quality!🔥
jaw-dropping quality of this video. Storytelling, animations, sound design... Amazing! And I have never been to Berghain :D
The answer to the question in the title starts at 09:30
And I would highly recommend @Hoog to change the title to something less misleading because I didn't care for a 9 minute history lesson and a dramatic story of the average Berghain goer. I just wanted to know what's inside. A simple 2min render would have sufficed.
Hearing Geopold voice that brit made me burst out laughing… didnt expect that at all
One of your best so far. Love you Hoog
I really enjoyed the structure of this video. The waiting line bits mixed between history parts.
Amazing video. Came here just to appreciate your effort for the animations.
Geopold's cameo caught me off-guard haha. Another wonderful high-quality video, as always!
It always brings me joy when something is hard to get (in) and I don't care one bit about it and the exclusiveness of it
Went to Berghain last weekend.
Lekker bezig Hoog! Watched the interview en je docu's zijn echt top notch, ook op Fern.
The world before the collapse of the Soviet Project is fascinating. The buildings are relics of Soviet ghosts in the wake of WWII.
Quick tipp ... if you want to get inside, go at Sunday afternoon. It's open, there is virtually no line - you get in quite handily.
The story is really original and loved the production value. Incredible work. Captivating. Subbed!
@@spaceagejava was at the 20 year birthday this weekend and it was beautiful, hopefully it continues to last
Call the girls i speak to berghain the way they reject me!😎
You've got to expand your vision beyond girls my guy become monkey
When you been there many times, this is like a comedy. lol
💯💯💯
Icon.
Some people dream of going to the moon, others want to climb mt Everest, but some set their ambitions far higher: a nightclub in the Alabama of europe
Oh ive been here.
Was invited by a friend named Gladys to go clubbing, not really into it but she insisted.
His friend says I'd be in for a "baptism by fire"... Didn't know the history of this club nor know what it is about, but i saw a lot of gay people, and i was like "oh... I think Im gonna get puked on tonight"
Got in at around 11PM, line was unexpectedly short even though it was a saturday, like waay shorter than what the video showed.
Went back, Gladys took me upstairs with his friends,
New people asked if i wanna fuck in bad English.
"little boy singing"
could you elaborate that?
@@kittikorn6674 yes, either a syth or some vocaloid stuff.. sounds like a little boy, high pitched but definitely does not sound like a girl at all... if i have to guess, its a gay dude speaking sexily then they increased the voice pitch digitally. couldve been the DJ
Gladys sounds fun.
Hilarious
I absolutely despise electronic music in general. I think I'd just be observing people like animals in a zoo. Maybe I'd enjoy this place 10 years ago.
Best feeling in the world to get in after watching the people who cut in front of you get rejected.
Awesome video, amazing production quality 👏 Glad I got it recommended 😀
Love the production value and styling!
This is what I wonder about but the buddha or Jesus lol not some acid heads
Your life would be the exact same bro, the only difference is you get high in a club for as many hours as you want listening to techno. A lot of "normal" people do this with booze and their favourite poison, usually cigarettes and alcohol listening to some old school rock for hours on end. Who's to say the guys raving on different chemicals are doing any harm?
I'm only part way through the video but I'm cheering for Sophie to get in.
Edit - yay!
0:05 What is this? A center for ants?
Oh God I just watched Zoolander recently lmao That took me off guard

The video is so beautifully crafted...kudos for that
what a beautiful video! Amazing animation
I was SA'd at Berghain and was viciously beaten when I tried to speak up.
omg am so sorry... how are you holding it? did you tell anyone about it?

One of the best video designs and edditing efforts ever.... you did a really good job!

I love the storytelling and modeling! I will be visiting Berlin soon, and want to go to Berghain, this video makes me so excited, hope I can get in!!
