Ford Mondeo Mk5 Driveshaft Woes. (120k miles on the clock) The fourth mk5 ford mondeo in the taxi fleet to suffer from an inner driveshaft joint failure.
I've just had mine replaced on a mk4. It's been clunking in first gear for about 2 years. During this time the garage had replaced the outer part only and wheel baring, where they felt some slack. It was fine for some time, then sound came back. After I've had other work done on the suspension, the sound was gone again for a while . Every time work had been done on the right side, the sound would go away and come back. Refitting everything was probably taking up some slack until it would start acting up again. Now I've changed the entire drive shaft and finally, after 2 years it's solved.
Great videos. Love the way you present. That joint looks like it came from the factory without grease. Seems to me (based on my personal observations and your experiences) that Ford are built cheap but repairing them is very expensive.
I think it had grease in the but at some point moisture got in and the bearing didnt have a massive amount of it. It's a trick to get more part failures to get you to get more money from your wallet in terms of parts and labour costs.
I work for a leading automotive parts distribution centre, it’s pretty common for Dealers or garages to take part of a kit and return the rest as not used. We have to check it before we resale. It’s annoying. They even try to return a fitted part as new and get their money back. One garages fraud is another’s inconvenience if we miss it.
I would get my drive shaft from JR Driveshafts in Birmingham 2 yrs unlimited mileage warrant, I have used them many times on various jobs and never let me down great quality and service and Half the price of main dealers
Your videos are amazing and detailed. We need great mechanics like you in London. Most if not all are dumb or play dumb around here to skin you alive. Nobody wants to even open a drive shaft, they want you to buy a complete one, and charge you £100 to fit it on. Minimum. Where are you located?, I might move near you just to have a decent honest mechanic . Keep up the good work. Honest knowledgeable mechanics are a rarity in London.
I think I am going to be sick. 2 months ago I purchased a very lightly used (as in 18,000 miles) 2013 Fusion/Mk5 Mondeo. Perhaps the 1 thing that I am noticing that I am not crazy about is the way it feels LOOSE when you let off the accelerator and then get back on it. My first thought was " spongy " engine and/or transmission mounts. There is no clunk...yet, so I hope this is not the same problem that I am having. Thank heavens I purchased an extended warranty that covers the car until 2026 or the 100,000 mile, whichever is first. EXCELLENT video, btw.
Hi Alan. Really love your videos, as do the whole of the mk5 community. I have a 150TDCI and getting a really bad vibration when i accelerate, in your opinion and experience, it's there a particular place/ side i should be looking on my drive shafts?
My 2015 2.0L Mondeo estate has developed a fault whereby I can also hear a “clunk” and when I grab the outer driveshaft near the cv joint, if moves up and down. Apparently, the outer cv joint is £350 and a complete driveshaft with the inner and outer cv joints will cost £390. I need to investigate further before I spend my money
Hi Alan ! When installing back the complete drive shaft, do you know what's the amount of torque force that needs to be applied when mounting back the 32mm hub nut ? Thanks for all your great videos ! I really like your style :) ... so keep up being you ... you're great !
@Alan Howatt your videos have been such a help to me despite it being a Mondeo, I have a 16 plate S-Max Mk2 (most parts are the same chassis wise though), and I have just had this same exact issue. Ford say replacement every 180k on my car and mine has just done 187k so got my moneys worth. I just bought 2 complete new drive shafts from Ford and its cost me £1149. So you got the lucky part of the deal lol Do you find the rear suspension bushes are atrocious? I have squeaking from my car but not sure what's the one wearing!
Hi Alan We have just got a Mk5 Titanium X 180 and I had a vibration on acceleration. It's just gone back to the garage and they are saying drive shafts. And as you said the Mk4 was fine. We have just sold a mk4 and that was as good as gold.
i don't actually remember having driveshaft issues on the mk4....on the mk5 its nearly always the inner joint bearings that fail and cause vibration when accelerating hard..we change lots of them and they are not cheap
You are one lucky git. Working on stuff that isn't rusted solid. Look how easy it all came apart! Ford does seem to have issues with drive shafts. I saw one worse than that on a Focus ST.
Hi Alan, do you know what type of grease goes into the inner/tripod/spider cv joint (name, type, NLGI grade etc) and where best to buy it? Would it also mix with the existing grease in my 2008 Galaxy 2.0tdci 140ps? The situation is that the inner boot slid off while doing something else and my intention is to simply it more grease without taking the shaft/joint off.
Huge thanks for your videos! Really helpful stuff! Any chance there was a part number on the bearings? would be interested in trying to source just the bearings and dont really want to wait till i have the shaft out of the car to find out, the unavailability of after marked drive shaft components puts a real strain on the budget working on this bloody car!

My inner joint is gone to on my mk4 it half popped out and boot what’s off on same end I found one off the spider bearings the needle bearings had fallen out well most of them how do I get the bit out off gearbox to rebuild drive shaft thanks
Hi Alan :) Today I've noticed a little bit oily driveshaft - the longer one. It's not much oil, no drops, just a little bit wet near gearbox. My car is Focus mk3.5 2 litre diesel 150hp and as I suppose MMT6 gearbox. I think the problem is driveshaft sealant, but I don't know that replace it now or wait - it's not a leak, just maybe 4cm wet driveshaft (counting from gearbox). Anyway. Is it difficult to replace that sealant? As I understood, I must drain the oil from gearbox, remove tyre, remove main driveshaft screw to, remove swingarm pin and unhook it, unscrew the support bearing cover, and what else? After what I saw at this video, driveshaft should go easily out of gearbox? Do You used some lever or something else to get the driveshaft out of gearbox? Thanks :)
Brilliant videos Alan, theyre bloody hilarious! Question is, whats your personal car? Do you like the familiarity of a Mondeo of your own or are you sick of the sight of them?
Hi fella had the same with my mk3 st220 inner cv falled and destroyed the carrier bearing fords wanted over 600 quid for a complete shaft and a 3 week wait

hi, the h7 connection on the led bulbs plug straight onto your headlamp wiring but the plug connector must be fitted the right way round..all is in the box you need, mine are still working well, they are much brighter but i doubt if they will last as long as they say but its a gamble... you could go for the brighter halogen h7 bulbs and weigh up the price difference
Not a good idea to spray wd40 near joints... As we all know oil (petrol) doesn't make a pair with rubber... it corrodes it. I wonder about the grease is it silicone based?
