Those magnets did a good job protecting the rest of the gearbox. Impressed with your work and the long life of the gearbox. Not many could do that repair nowadays.
Despite the intentional cheese at the start😂, I love how informative this channel is, without taking himself to serious but shows old school time served mechanics ….love it 👍
That’s the bearing that went on mine last year at around 160,000 miles. £50 bearing but cost me £1300 inc new clutch fly wheel and slave cylinder. Mechanic said he’d charge £1800 if he did the job again as it was a bit of a pig getting the gearbox out. Think it was the dpf in the way or something
Had exactly the same problem on a 2005 Mondeo 2L diesel. Pretty much an identical gear box. About 160,000kM on it at the time. Mechanic swapped gearbox for one from a scrap yard. I tool the old one home and did exactly the same strip down and it was exactly the same bearing gone. It was about 20km after I replace the clutch and DM flywheel. Clutch was not slipping or anything but the flywheel was rattling like hell. As that bearing is on the back end of the input shaft I put it down to the rattling of the DM flywheel. I reckoned the bad flywheel took out that bearing. Now got the same rattling starting on a 2016 Mondeo 2L diesel. Same Gearbox again. 175,000kM on it. So I reckon I would be better replacing that clutch and flywheel asap. Looks like a got a nice weekend project coming up 🙂
my mk1 zephyr use to snap an axle often, l use to carry a spare n the boot, l could change it in 30 minutes on the side of the road, and they were solid, the look of surprise was on my face when l saw the mondeo axle was hollow, how much stronger have metals become over the last 70 years, you hardly hear of axles snapping now
Nice work Alan 😊👌 I have a 2015 1.6 tdci mondeo with 230.000km on it and the exact same noice, i'm going to change the bearings this weekend 😬🙊 I have orderd the front and rare bearing on the input shaft, maby I only need to change the rear one 😃🙏 Again, great video! Gave me hope 😄
if i am doing a job which is not often being disabled and old so i get the son in law he is well trained by me and we always take photos especially doing hub brakes for where the springs go but if nobody thought of it great of you to suggest it and great video
Really good video thanks, I have a 124k 1.6tdci c max with the same issue, rough bearing noise at idle and in 1st and 2nd but press the clutch and it disappears. Just had the clutch and flywheel replaced because I thought it was that ( first one it has had since new) but the problem persists. Could be a trip to have the gearbox reconditioned next
Alan. Alan. Alan Taken a brave pill. As a motor trader with a ramp thinking tackling an input shaft bearing Fiat 500 1.2 common petrol. Noisy in 1, 2. All other gears ok. Wondering if you’ve done one. It’s not split the clutch and box. It’s a casing onto box. Apparently can do it from engine bay. Below battery cage ??? Just easy 13mm bolts. Seal and bearing. And oil. Unsure.
Hi there Alan I have a 2012 mondeo estate it was the granddaughters and she got a focus and given me the mondeo it's a nice car but it jumps out of first gear but you can still use it you have to keep your hand on the gear stick and let the clutch out very slowly until you started to move then get it into next gear but the car drives lovely in all the other gears I do not go to far in the car and it is not getting used every day so I thought if I could use it for now until we can get it fixed I am a lorrie driver so I was used to letting things develop as the mechanics would say do you think I will get a bit more out of her nice videos
Hello. Can you Alan or someone else with experience help? I own a ford mondeo titanium mk4 2.0 liter 140 hp automatic hatchback. When I stand still with the car and press the gas pedal approx. 30-40% in, the car behaves relatively normally until the turbo starts to spin, suddenly the motor revs high and stands there for approx. 2 seconds before the car shifts and the revs drop. I know that all cars with turbos have turbo lag! but here it seems that the data in the car is not programmed correctly, Is this normal behavior on this type of car?
once did a gearbox out of a ford galaxy ,locked up going forward but ok in reverse was a bolt from a selector came loose stripped and replaced cost time and £2.00 for the bolt
Awhile back i mentioned this same problem to you on a live chat. You said that you really haven't had any real issues with this type of gearbox. WelI I tore down the gear box on my 2013 ford mondeo 2.0 tdci 6 speed and found the exact same problem. Replace the bearing and seals and good as new. Still don't know what caused the problem with only 117000km
Hi Alan, I have the same sounds coming out the gear box on my 2016 Mondeo, how long do I have to change the bearing? Thank you and I hope I will have the chance to meet you one day. Kind regards, Sam
hi sam, i am right now doing another gearbox which i will upload..it has the same bearing gone which seems to be a thing with these boxes, i can only think if you leave it too long the bearing could break up and cause the input shaft to tip and cause more damage so really needs to be done as soon as possible
Hi Alan, Great video like usually! I drive Galaxy 2012 2.0 tdci manual gearbox with same noise! But I have a struggles from where to buy that bearing (they offering me whole gearbox or whole bearing set, which is not for me)! Could you share some link please or an other option! Thanks in advance!!!
Alan its blody weird why bearing sink in oil bath has oil seals on both sides??? its really stupid before fit new bearing you should remove rubber seals from this stupid bearing, other way endup like old one,any bearing in gearbox sink in oil shouldn't have any, repeated any oil seals on bearing, otherwise dirt have no way to go ,temperature keep rising, all thanks to close bearing in rubbers seals
I would have replaced all the bearings just on principle. While the magnets have done a damn good job they only grab the metal when it pass's close enough to the magnet. You can guarantee that there has been a lot of excessive wear on all bearing surfaces. Half the cost of a gearbox repair is usually in the removal, dis assembly, re assembly and re installation. New gaskets, seals and bearings as a rule (there are exceptions. Some bearings are so ridiculously expensive you replace only when necessary)
Glad to see your all wrapped up !, hard to remember the cold from when I lived in the uk, here in townsville ,australia , most days now are 30 deg plus, too blinking hot I say,, as a mk5 mondeo owner , I enjoy your videos, only issue with mine is on over, run there is a weird noise, I’m thinking alternator pulley ?? Thoughts ?
Countershaft bearings on 1-4 just gone on mine at 150k, DMF failed so i have a feeling thats what killed the gearbox. Replaced both so here's to another 150k 🍻
Amazing thank you Alan, that's a good video to reply to my original comment about a bearing failure on a MK5 Mondeo. What was the millage on that gearbox roughly?
Interesting as always, Alan - can we call Monika The Dragon Lady now, seeing she's spewing fire? 😉 Now, that round magnet, where is it placed? It looked like you just picked it up laying loose in the gearbox housing. And I'm wondering - we never see him - so who is Steve and where is he?
Safety first? Um, please put the safety guard back on your grinder. I've had grinding and slitting discs go on me over the years and the guard every time has done it's job.
That shows a good mechanic... to "repair" such parts without replacing the whole gearbox 👍 I'm in the same job since 52 years... best regards from 🇩🇪
Those magnets did a good job protecting the rest of the gearbox. Impressed with your work and the long life of the gearbox. Not many could do that repair nowadays.
Hi Alan, nice to meet you in person this week. Keep up the good work and the videos, they are much appreciated.

I think you must be the worlds expert on Diesel Mondeo Mk5's! Brilliant video Alan - many thanks
And mk IV ( probably MK3 MK2 MK1 as well) I started coming here for mk IV knowledge and still do , Merry Christmas.
Great video Alan, “safety first”then the garage guard-less grinder comes out😂😂
Just about to write that when I saw your comment 😁
Thanks Alan great bit of repair work and very educational for people like me who don't know much about gearboxes, thanks again,
Alan, the best of the best.
thanks marius, merry xmas and a very happy new year to you
Fantastic video I don’t know a lot about gears and my car has got a whining deep tone noise when it’s in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.
cheers, your best getting that checked out
The magnets have done their job, they prevented the rest of the box from detonation.

your probably right about the flywheel, happy new year

Wondered if this is the same 6 speed manual that's also used in the Peugeot Expert 2007-2016
So now we know how to do this job - thanks Alan! - top job!👋👍
Good use of brake cleaner! I used to work with a guy who thought it was hilarious to spray it at me when I was welding, gotta love the motor trade :)
Always wanted to have a look at a mk5 Peugeot gearbox!
You have some skilled drivers - I have never seen a shaft snap in half like that before...

Great stuff Monika and Alan, great detailed video Alan, Thank You👍🙏🙂
Enjoyed this vid and learnt something.... cheers buddy
Well done mate. Always learning from you which is very much appreciated
Great video result saving the gearbox with a new bearing 😀
Hi Alan great video as usual, are these the same gearbox as in the transit custom ?,is it a Ford gearbox or a Peugeot/Citroën gearbox?
i believe they are a german gearbox getrag and yes pretty much the same box as in transit custom, just different casing and gearing
@@alan4x Thanks Alan for the reply hope your keeping well 👍
Another great school day Alan!! "Thank you" 😀👍
Is that bearing a sealed one if so why is it not lubricated from gear oil
Good question🤔... Alan??
Excellent Video...

Boa tarde, qual o sintoma que apresenta quando esse rolamento está ruim?
Why do think I get gear box rattle at idle and nothing with the clutch in?
Enjoyed the teardown really helped , can I ask if should all the gears on the input shaft be fixed , the one on the 5th spins freely , thx 👍
How is that an RS bearing in a internal application? surely it should be open to let the oil in to the bearing? anyone else spotted this?
Is this same gearbox as used on 1.5tdci mov mondeo estate as I am having the same symptoms at the moment
RS have some cheap bearing pullers that work wonders !
MSC have Thor copper / hide hammers at sensible prices, ideal for use on aluminium castings !
FAG bearings made in Slovakia are not the same quality as when they were made in Germany, best to stick with NSK or Toyo bearings for top quality.

Nice 1 Alan, might wait till summer to do mine, mine is a high pitch whine, dip the clutch goes, its on all gears up to 4 th. Great video 👍
I've got exactly that issue
Is this the MMT6 Gearbox? Same as in 2009 V70 2.0 Diesel Manual?
once did a gearbox out of a ford galaxy ,locked up going forward but ok in reverse was a bolt from a selector came loose stripped and replaced cost time and £2.00 for the bolt
I saw a Steve's Taxi in Ryde Isle of Wight today ,i thought of you😁
I’m actually in the process of repairing a 64 plate woth 166k with out you have explained it seems like I’m going to have to do the same thanks
Taxi drivers must be very hard on the cars Alan.
those cars get well abused, yes

Gearboxes...usually a dark art but this one seemed fairly straightforward to take apart.

Alternator clutch pulley is worth a gamble. 👍🏻

Top info as always.
