    Wicked video Alan. So far 350miles and it’s been perfect. Il bring it round after a clean if you want to show a video of what a vignale has. I never even got to meet Monica 😔

      Just common sense says Ford probably messed up fitting when new as it's not exactly the typical boy racers car, don't ask don't get.

      I love the satisfying feeling when you get to the bottom of an issue like that, especially if it's something you wouldn't haven't even considered at the start... Yes you're a few quid more out of pocket than you'd like (or was probably necessary) but you now have so much more understanding of the clutch system on your car (we all do now 🤣)!
      The Vignale is a beautiful motor, so much more than a Mondeo, fingers crossed that you can enjoy it hassle free for a while now🤞🏼

    Interesting problem and good diagnostics for the solution. FTE has designed and added several mystery parts to clutch hydraulic systems. The large damper that you unscrewed is a vibration dampener for the hydraulic system. It's job is to minimize engine buzz that can be felt in the pedal. The pipe that connects to the CSC you showed a brief exploded view but the part that is about 2 1/2" long and has a black plastic horseshoe retainer, open that one up again by prying out the retainer. Pull apart slowly to catch all the parts. Note the component orientation. In the pedal going down mode all of the fluid flows thru that little shuttle/piston assy. In a normal pedal up mode fluid returns thru it easily. But if you dump the clutch that hi speed return flow closes the shuttle/piston down and restricts the fluid flow. By controlling the engagement the hydraulic system is helping to protect the drivetrain from a CLUTCH DUMP shock engagement. And if you go a bit farther into removing the guts from that restrictor you'll find a rubber grommet inside that has a small air chamber outside of it, again another mini damper by the air getting compressed. It's small but it's there. The diagnosis of the clutch being held released was a very good diagnostic clue as to what was not the problem. I used to have an engineering paper describing these features, but its "in the bin". In the USA one of the first places we saw this combination was in about 2005- Dodge Ram pick up with the Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L diesels with the G56 6-speed trans. BTW the "guts" of the mini damper flow return restrictor can be completely removed and reassembled, no leaks. But then you loose the clutch dump drivetrain protection. As far as the DMF destruction, not a good idea why, depends on who made that DMF as to possible internal hunches for failure. Good job finding the RED X. Gary, A Clutch Guy.

    Hi from Scotland, really enjoy your videos, so much enthusiasm for your job and i can relate to what you put up with from the drivers, i used to drive taxi's and as an engineer myself i had to repair some of the cars that got damaged or fuelled with petrol instead of diesel. keep up the great work, you make watching your channel so enjoyable with your wit and humour, cheers.

    What a relief..I had the same problem with a hiab lorry crane many years ago, there was much head scratching for a while too, but a fabulous moment when I discovered it. Great vids.

    Good work to both Ben & yourself. Didn't give up on this problem. Even more so for Ben, going back to basics and taking all parts off and fully inspecting them. Hindsight I know but it paid dividends.
    Good for Ben to stay in touch with the problem and show you what the cause was.
    Very good video with perfect detail and back ground stories.
    @Ben - hope you can fully enjoy the car that you paid for and I hope that you show this video to those that matter and it goes some way into getting all or at least most of your money back.

    Every time I take a Ford box out ( I work at the Blue oval company) that little rubber seal falls out caught me out once saw well done for finding that problem. not had that one my sell but thanks for the heads up. Love your vids makes me feel like I'm not the only one with these problems. Keep safe

    That's interesting and makes sense. But never heard something like that to happen. My good friend is heavy equipment mechanic and he has seen rubber brake line (or clutch line, I can't remember which), but once he had case where pressure wasn't released and he had gone through the system and changed hose and sliced it open. It had had a very small piece of rubber torn at inside which had worked as one-way valve. He mentioned that the line hadn't looked new, but not really that bad. But anyway he said that it was one hell to diagnose and find out. As it's easy to figure he had disassembled many other pieces on system to eventually found this. Pretty much identical as that Rolls Royce thing that was mentioned. Anyway good reminder for all mechanics that they should always check out seals on disassembled components that something like this wouldn't happen. I mean if you take part out, visual checking doesn't take virtually any time. As machine mechanic I have seen somewhat similar thing, that automatic solenoid valve didn't work properly and cause was that fitting apparently had been assembled with PTFE-tape that had unwound, possibly cut by threads and stuck in orifice ("pilot hole") near rubber membrane.

    Had the same problem, pedal would stick down, no drive, a pillock reversed into it and wrote it off before l could repair it, your videos are brilliant.

    This is a great video I experienced similar type of fault had it checked out at my Ford dealership it was a very good experience they did checks on all components and topped up oil with reassurance that all seemed okay but to keep an eye on next few hundred m miles
    I'm glad checks out as there can be some other things that contribute to this type of fault in any event I'm glad my servicing is being done at a place I can rely on
    Keep the videos coming as it's great to gain depth of knowledge on the essential car systems
    I believe the courses held at technical colleges in the past g ave folk a good sense of security and know-how leading to safer cars and driving

    Great video very informative, when the video was running i was stumped but when alan mentioned about the rolls royce pipe made me wonder if someone had covered the pipe with a glove and not got all of the glove out of the pipe. Have seen this before and had very similar problem. Either way great that its sorted

    I’m with you on this Alan. O ring leaks, you inspect it. If there’s pieces missing you have to ask where it’s gone. This is why I fix as much on my own motors as I can. I just don’t do main dealers, I’ve worked in one.

    Exact issue next door guy had with the Meriva four clutch kits several master cylinders few slave cylinders
    And several months later when everyone was about to give up sticking clutch pedal issue me come around tried several tricks none worked then at the joint to slave cylinder find some rubber bit acting as one way valve removed that was fine since
    The car was sold twice due that problem first one mechanic bought it from customer after a couple clutch replacement attempts then he sold car to his daughter problem still there so another salvo from a parts canon still no luck until I came along
    Car got fixed and sold onto another customer
    Got to love these tricky faults

    You are lucky Ben is mechanically minded and understands that sometimes things with cars just aren’t straightforward and easy to diagnose, customers seem to think that a mechanic should be able to immediately put a finger on a problem and as we know that’s rarely the case, what a find this was though lol ....     The inline “disk” is actually a damper. It’s to remove vibrations transferred from the clutch itself through to the clutch pedal. Very simple design, also used in hydraulic pump industrial applications.

    I know what you mean Alan, about finding that thing that just makes you think "that's the bugger" that'll be causing that, main reason why only changing one thing at a time is a sensible approach, otherwise we never find out the problem.

    Thinking about this, The O ring would have to be partly torn for a piece to fall into the slave cylinder on fitting, so that means whoever refitted the original pipe didn't look at it.
    Then as you fitted a new clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder and the damper valve the dislodged part of the O ring must have been sitting inside the pipe that connects to the slave cylinder.
    Probably got flushed back into the new slave cylinder on bleeding up the new parts.
    Then it lurked there till the fluid flow picked it up and backed the restrictor in the Tee Piece.
    There is a lot of unnecessary complication on that clutch pipe.
    Every part of a system is a potential failure point, really a problem on modern vehicles.

    Just throwing it out there Alan, but from experience Ben's car could of been a "Trial" car for Police forces. I've driven a few when we have had them and obviously they can put through their paces usually by the driver training unit and operational officers to see if it meets their own requirements. The fact it will of been registered to a dealer is normal as that's who supplied the demo vehicle. I can't think of anyone else who could knacker a flywheel & clutch in 15K other than a pursuit driver! Even a clown of a sales person would be dragged over the coals by the dealer principle if they caused that if it were a normal demo car dealer motor. Glad it's sorted now and the cause was discovered, great detective work!! 🤣👍

    Brilliant bit of detective work! I wonder whether that bit of o-ring was floating around from the factory, perhaps responsible for clutch slip and overheating of the flywheel leading to a replacement at such low mileage then another the same interval later. I find it hard to believe it would be possible to drive hard/badly enough to ruin it in 15K miles otherwise.

    Cavitational effect in the hydraulic fluid caused by the bit of o ring in combination with the spring in the fluid damper probably lead to premature flywheel issues. Cavitational effect is often mistaken for air in an hydraulic fluid. It is in fact a micro vacuum of bubbles of nothing. This sets up a very high frequency pulse onto the clutch release bearing which as it rotates creates a small swash plate effect. Anything that resonates in harmony with this vibration can actually fail. Very often the thing that is designed to compensate for such things such as a dual mass flywheel can actually be effected as its being stimulated out of tune with what it's meant to do and then eventually fails a lot quicker. The vibration cannot necessarily be heard or felt but will be there and can be very destructive.

    Fiesta st180’s can suffer a similar issue with the clutch pedal getting stuck down. On those engines it can actually be too much end float on the crank shaft from time of assembly . Only cure is bottom end rebuild or new block assembly .

    Thank you Alan & Ben, I am having a very similar problem with may 66 plate Mondeo, except I dont lose drive I just bring the clutch pedal back up with my toes, if it gets any worse ii know what to replace first

    I own a 15 plate Mk5, 2.0tdci that had a rattling flywheel replaced after 12k.
    It was bought from Motorpoint that are well known for selling ex enterprise rental cars. It has now covered another 90k on the replacement flywheel with no issues as I have driven it carefully.
    I thought it had been hammered after I bought it and found the mpg to have been averaging 32. 5.
    I've never had less than 42 from it!

    Crikey only thirty thousand miles did the vehicle have a tow bar fitted ? or been wheel clamped in the past and somebody's tried to drive away with it attached and totally shagged the drive train, It's obviously come under a massive amount of stress on the vehicle wanted to move forward but something was locking drive and something had to give out 100% abuse and well done Ben, and thanks Alan for sharing this video just subscribed.

    This kind of problem will never get solved if you keep taking it back to dealers unfortunately, its enough to cause people to sell the car. there's part fitters and proper mechanics. You boys are proper mechanics! Enjoy the car Ben, I hope the clutch is still good👌

    Had the same problem on a 2000 Ford Galaxy. Shards of plastic in the clutch fluid line. Found it myself after 3 new mastercylinders.

    Had smilliar problem on a Insignia B. Thought first it was master cylinder or the vale you took apart changed all that. (i thik its for let the pedal more easy/slowly.) The car had done 80.000km and i was the first to work on the car. (dealer), The slave cylinder looked fine and also the clutch. So we changed the slave cylinder and i worked

    Great piece of detective work. I hope Ben did not pay much for the car to start with as your bill would have been --well pretty high. I wonder you don't get others taking their Fords to you. BTW I have a Mk3 2L petrol estate 77K still on first clutch/flywheel . 2005 and first owner Avis! But wife and I careful drivers.

    Cracking video! I've got an idea about the 'first owner', I used to work at ERAC (Enterprise rent-a-car) and a lot of our ford fleet had reg numbers beginnings with E (e.g. EA66 like on this one) and that could explain why it's had an absolute hammering? Hire cars are so often found on the used car market but it's hidden really well even in used car stock. 😬

      Any truth in the rumour that hire companies now register cars using the names of employees or directors, simply to increase the cars resale value when the likes of BCA get hold of them?

      @@6ettinold The closest I've heard is that the dealership will say the first owner was called 'Eric' bit they got the I mixed up with an A.. but no you know it's ex enterprise because it will say 'ERAC' as the name on the V5. It may be different for other hire firms as they often lease vehicles as opposed to Enterprise who own all theirs.

Started around 2 weeks ago with the pedal feeling loose, since this morning the pedal is not returning anymore but the gearbox is changing the gear fine when I’ve got the pedal pressed. Would you mind saying what should be checked first? To avoid on taking the gear box out?

    had the exact issue on an old MK2 Focus it didn't allow fluid to return quick enough.

    'Clutch non judder valve' The Mrs, Yaris had 2 clutches before they found this. Bypass it.

    My 2015 transit connect van at 90k miles sometimes the clutch pedal came up about half way and I had to pull it up by putting my foot underneath and lifting. It was worst driving in town.
    It went through MOTs and service guy said ignore it until it breaks proper.
    I sold it like that telling the dealer that it probably needed a new clutch.
    Still that mondo went through two duel mass flywheels in 30,000 miles I hope there isn’t something else wrong.
