- Engine cut out & won't restart, what's wrong, ford mondeo mk5 2l diesel.
After initially thinking the high pressure fuel pump spring was broken which would have been a simple job to fix, this one turned out a bit more serious ending up with a broken high pressure fuel pump shaft.
Saw the taxi by the side of the road - somehow knew there might be a video on it 😅
🤣😂
Take a bow. Well diagnosed. The car is now in good running order. A treat to watch.
Throw less parts clean before dismantle calm down. Your the best!!!!
lol
Hats off! This man is amazing. Thank you Mr Howatt! I start wonder if the taxi drivers should be obliged to carry with them a fault code scanner to make repairs easier. Or for that matter, all the car drivers should be...
i don't think that will ever happen lol
That’s brilliant that started for you well done for all your hard work on the cars and the same for the videos as well
Thanks 👍ben
Allen
You are the man just fantastic you always know how to find these faultsgreat entertainment we want more please nate we miss ur videos your the best

cheers phil🤣
I decided to buy a mondeo because of your suporting videos!
I learn so much about a car i will never ever ever ever ever own or allow in my shop
Great job Alan, I learn so many things watching you work! "Won't break down without a good reason" - well, I must be the most jinxed Mondeo owner, my 210 ps diesel just shaved the timing belt at ~ 65000 miles. It cost me ~2200 pounds to have it repaired (62500 miles warranty expired just few weeks ago), and Ford only agreed to pay 220 pounds to "help" me. They changed both camshafts, timing chain, timing tensioner, fuel pump, well, timing belt kit, everything they saw connected there, but they didn't find the real reason for it. I guess I swore too much, because the belt snapped again after just 600 miles. Ok, what?!?! Now they did it on their warranty. After less than 100 miles, my car suddenly stopped while climbing a not so step slope, with some fuel pressure error. It refused to start again, I was just talking with a trailer owner, when I just tried one more time, and miracle, I was able to drive my car at the nearest Ford garage for a diagnose, while driving there the car worked like new just because. They changed the fuel filter, and recommended fuel injectors to be changed! Really?!? They weren't even able to tell me what injector was the faulty one, because they don't have a testing stand lol. But hey, why not recommend to change everything? Ok, now I drive my 70k miles Mondeo waiting for some shit to happen again, without a reason, just because my car sucks.
Wow, this is awkward, sorry to read such a story :/. Never keep one of these when the warranty expires, it appears that lately Ford simply uses cheapest and unreliable suppliers for their parts...
Omg, I just bought an mk5 2.0 tdci 170hp mondeo and I just read on the german forums where a few persons were complaining about that, especially one person whos cars cambelt snapped (i forgot the mileage) and he had to have his whole engine replaced and guess what? The next cambelt snapped at 2500kms (around 1600miles) again, he had to change the engine again (this time under warranty) and the third time it snapped again without engine change and now he dont know what to do. And other similar stories where the cambelt snapps, now one more person that I see on youtube complaining.... now I am afraid lol. But I am buying a used one with about 120k miles on it...
@@AshleySamLeslie Sorry to hear that (you bought a MkV Mondeo sadlol). The story continued, and not in a good way. My injectors were clogged with metal shavings from faulty injection pump. Changed all that, and thoroughly cleaned all fuel lines, gas tank, low pressure pump, injection rail. Although didn't make much sense after spending a ton of money, I sold the car right after, I hated Ford too much. For me Ford doesn't exist anymore, and I warned all my friends about these bandits.
@@TheDoRelian How much mileage did your car have? What is the probability a car that already drove 120k miles without issues to start having those issues that you guys have? Is it more like pop and flop that some cars have problems while others work flawlessly? I had a mondeo mk2 before and drove from 80k to 160k miles before I sold it and I literally never had to repair or replace anything special besides the fuel filter. (Not counting regular things like oil/air/engine air filter etc)
I am sorry for you. I fell in love with mondeo mk5, its so beautiful...
Really appreciate your efforts in making these videos, keep em coming.
Thanks, will do!
Ware is you servis
Tbf, if your first thought of a breakdown is a cambelt snapping, then the engine must be pretty reliable
Peugeot make a good diesel engine.
Usually are, any other faults usually come up on the computer.
@@t1ghe Generally all French diesels are good.
These are by far the best videos I have seen. It's good to know, and make an ideea, about what could go wrong with them.It did help me with my mondeo m4.5 ( facelift ). Keep on doing them! Cheers!
Well done for doing the cambelt and water pump you don’t want that to slap
Another great video Alan I'm amazed at much in in the engine bay of these 2.0 l diesels there's not an inch of room it must be a pain having to remove loads of other parts to get to the part you need anyway keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
You doing the best videos for mk5 ever .great job knows exactly what is going on this mk5 through out.i know a bit more what to expect from my monde mk5
Excellent video! Saving that old engine definitely a bonus! And no Mrs Monika today ?
yeah i keep lots of used engine parts, monika in the next vid
Thanks a lot Alan for quick reply you know your stuff.
Brilliant, mate. Just goes to show that fixing stuff 'aint just about the text books ! It's geezers like you that can think outside ' the box ' to get to the problem. Excellent ' heads-up ' about the timing marks on the pump... that could easily have caught me out.. ! Question.... Is there an upgrade to the high pressure spring.. ? If it's a ' known ' and an obvious go-to in these situations, then replacing it with it's big brother could avoid future hassle. Keep 'em coming, mate... Spot on.
Great job Alan on the Mondeo pump
cheers
Cheers for this mate, my mates galaxy stopped dead it was the spring now to try and find the bloody spring from somewhere
those springs are hard to find but pretty sure someone will be selling them on eBay etc
@@alan4x well we replaced the snapped spring but unfortunately the thing still won't start, it's so frustrating because it's my mates taxi. I'm wondering if something else has gone like the fuel pump pressure regulator, it's all guess work now.
@@darynsaxmight be worth removing the high pressure pump. The pump shafts sometimes can shear in half. I have had broken springs where the car still runs fine so looks like you may have multiple problems
Well got her running today, we had checked that shaft inside but it was intact, the fault was further inside, the connector and cog that connects the high pressure pump to the cam, literally right on the end of the camshaft it had sheared off from there, we changed the high pressure fuel pump for a new one but it didn't show the fault until you went further in. WOW I can't believe it went should have found that before replacing everything else, it's cost a small fortune although we have spares I suppose. We were just standing there in disbelief when she fired up and I guess we are experts now on the fuel system side of a ford galaxy and mk5 Mondeo lol@@alan4x
My mk3 Mondeo only done 55k so according to these videos it's got many years left in it👍
Hi Alan,, another great video,,, good bit of detective work, look forward to your next video.
cheers stephen
Another detailed Mondeo fault-find, well done mate. Keep those shorts for indoors.
What a ballache,I still like the look of the Mk5,but don't think I'll ever buy one.
I'm just hoping my Mk4 will last another couple of years. 😉
I've just had to take a company car and lay up my MK4 Estate, now I'm lumbered with a Passat, not a fan 😕
Thanks for very informative video, therefore I’m not the lucky one just had a pump out but it looks good no broken spring or shafts. Also no fuel coming out from it does it mean I need to look for something else or pump failed internally. 50k miles on the car just stopped whilst driving 2017 Ford Edge 2.0d
Hello Alan, was wondering if you have yet replaced the timing belt on the mondeo ecoboost 1.5 tdi engine ..2018 model. and if so do you have a video please
Love watching your videos, I have a ford smax 2016, I find your content very helpful.
Awesome, thank you!
That's pretty bad for the high pressure pump to go at 102k as there not cheap I'm really not to sure how reliable that 2.0 tdci is in the mk5 I still think the engine in the mk4 is a lot more stronger
Hi Alan, having a similar issue with my 2.2 Diesel S Max, engine is cranking but won't fire. I don't think it's getting fuel. I cracked off the fuel feed pipe to the injector rail and I'm getting no fuel while cranking. Just wondered if you advise locking the sprocket on the cambelt before fitting a new HP pump on that particular engine too? Thanks!
Well done! This happened on my 2.0l Kuga with just 28000 on the clock :(
Good stuff 👍👍👍
With these buggers pinching cars nowadays the way they do. factory fitted security being undermined with these scanner/signal blockers etc. breaking in and stealing keys, is their a way to turn off the pump very easy or something else from the cockpit if a short harness was made? (ideally enough to get them a mile or two from your house before they dump it).
I had a rocker switch on an old Metro in the 80s. that was petrol and wired up between the coil and battery and very easy to fit all those years ago.
thank you Alan, I really appreciate your video. Just one question, have you ever get one that could not start even with brand new fuel pump, with correct time etc?? Here in Australia does not have much information about and I am having trouble to troubleshoot it and the vehicle does not starts.
Cam is turning, also in time...but I don't have fuel at high pressure pump and a code about low pressure...In my thoughts I do have Eletronic pump, but is my guess, because so far I do not know for where goes.
Thank you so much in advance
the low pressure pump is in the fuel tank, when you switch ignition on you will hear the fuel rush in the fuel pipes under the bonnet
@@alan4x sorry, re reading my comment I did not explained good, apologies for it.( and when I said Eletronic pump, I supposed to wrote Eletronic system )
when I said I don't have fuel at high pressure fuel pump, I mean at on the actually high side, because the low pressures is working fine.
Now I am fighting to troubleshoot the valve at high pressure fuel pump, on the both wires on it I am having power, one with 12.4 12.3 volts and the other with 9.something.
to be fair with you, I do not know what this means, I supposed that the ecu cuts one of them send negative signal to it? or am I saying stupid thing?
more 4 hours at this car today and I could not start it rsrs
I’ve got a 2lt mk5 fitted with the citreon hdi engine. It was booked in for a cam belt but it’s failed early. I’ve been told they are a fail safe head meaning it might not of done valve damage?? Not sure if this is right or not but I do remember doing a c5 hdi that broke a belt and it just broke the rocker arms.
Another brilliant video Alan, thanks mate, keep up the good work 💪
Thanks 👍
hi there alan i have a 2010 mondeo it cranks over but no fuel pump at the tank i can here the front one going but not the rear i have put in a new filter in rear but no fuel going through ,plz help dash man australia,
i have reset comp .
Hi Alan just a quick Question, when setting timing and locking flywheel etc is piston 1 supposed to be on TDC or is it slightly below TDC (Cylinder 1) ?
Looks like mine just took a dump too. Done the filter, now to check the pump. Guess I will find out if it's spring or shaft when I investigate on sunday
excellent job alan!!!!....my ford smax 1.8tdci needs clutch replacement, do you have time to do it please?...thank you...
Hope you are staying safe and well
yes all good, cheers ben
Well done again Al great knowledge mate and spot on diagnosis
Hi 👋🏻 Alan. Hope your ok matey 🤣Great video as always 😀 Love the humour with added technical advice is brilliant 🤩 This is what’s fantastic about your channel 😆 Cheers Stevie 😎
thanks stevie, hope all is good with you too
Is it possible just to replace spring unit held by the 3 bolts with one from a spare pump if the spring breaks.
This would save replacing the whole pump unit.
Yes. That's what I did.
you are a good specialist, sorry that it is not in Belgium)
Alan love your videos, but could you suggest what could be wrong if I have a hard cold start? I mean only when it's cold otherwise its fine, could it be heating element gone i don't get any errors.. and when would you change chain on these vehicles? it got timing belt and chain.
the timing belt should be changed at 125k miles but the chain would be worth doing at 200k miles if you keep it that long however the chain is a long and expensive job,
not sure about the starting, would have to see the car as they don't really suffer from bad cold starting
@@alan4x Thank you, here where I am they said they would charge for 100eu labour cost and 120e for part of the chain. I would bring it if i would be in Uk but unfortunately I am not 😅
You get some strange ones. Never had one shear a pump on our fleet. Had plenty of pump springs go to a point that I change them out at 80k had plenty of injectors go down usually cylinder 3. Had a few pumps seize up and if the cam is at the right place it will shatter the cam pully
ohh, well i not had any pumps seize up myself
@@alan4x only ever seems to be drivers who come in in the past with engine light for failed regens and freez frame shows sod all in the tank. So putting 2 and 2 together I think its caused by the fuel being to hot and losing liberation properties
Probably know the answer before watching to the end had similar on a 2009 galaxy 2.0 HP pump drive flange was spun on the cam and was creating pressure to a degree engine was trying to start but would start spin flange once pump resistance would exceed the friction so will be watching to the end
Take care
Oh my god those disks !!! Great video as ever :-)
Excellent work, well done Alan.
thanks
Hi Alan.. My Mk5 2.0 diesel occasionally won't start (A few thousand miles in between...and does start eventually)..The AA guy guesses it might be the 'Fuel Lift Pump', which, by it's name, suggests to me that it's, maybe, in the fuel tank.. Is this something that's accessible to the DIYer, or is it best left to a garage.. Your advice would be appreciated..Many thanks.. John.. Bristol

Hi
My Ford Mondeo mk5 kept showing transmission limited function message on screen for few months now. Today on motorway car downshifted and stall itself and a spanner sign came on dash.
