How To Check & Replace Your Timing Chain...Ford Mondeo Mk5 2L Diesel

  • This is a particular bad case of a timing chain that is about to break as the tensioner nylon guides have all broken and worn away.
    Apart from putting a pick into the oil filler cap hole to prod the timing chain to see if it is loose you can also put a piece of paper over the oil filler hole with the engine running...if the paper gets soaked in oil very quickly there is a good chance you will need a new timing chain and tensioner.

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU,. Alan I have just repaired the head gasket on my wife's brother's Peugeot 508 2.0 with same engine. Your various videos on timing belts, fuel pump timing, Egr abominations and chain replacement gave me all the info I needed. It took me quite a while , maybe nearly 30 hours over two weeks, but it seems successful. It started on second turn of the key and only real problem at the end was I forgot to reconnect the cam sensor so it was a sluggish starter. A word to other users, I broke the head off 6 of the head bolts due to the torx part shearing. Luckily a friend was able to weld old sockets and we got them out for the price of a few pints. Thank you once again Alan for your wonderful videos. You've a friend in Ireland now! Thanks, Richard, Dublin.

    These vehicles 'MUST' be very well maintained otherwise they wouldn't still be running sweet with over a 1/4 of a million miles on some of them so give yourself a pat on the back.
    Boss-man (Steve) was right to buy a fleet of Fords by the looks of it because if he went 'German' & bought a fleet of BMW's some of them have cam chains on the opposite end of the engine. (Behind the Flywheel). So it's Engine out, Gearbox & Clutch & Flywheel off to access the timing cover. They are a nightmare !

    Hello Alan! Regarding the factory standard oil leak by the HPFP. I have came up with an idea which i actually used. I picked the cog-wheelunit in its 2 peices and only bolted up half of it to the engine at the time, why? because if you do that you can use alot of sealent paste on the actual gasket itself and not be afraid of it blocking the oil way because if only half of it is bolted up you can easily remove the excess paste from the hole. then after i have done that I bolted up the other half of the cog unit, installing the cogwheel like this when half of the unit is bolted up can be tricky but a bit of wiggling it around it will slot into the camshaft cog drive. I think this can be a good idea to solve the issue

      A car I've just had in with broken rockers has a lot of sealant around the cog box to the head and a bead of sealant on the body of it.
      Car won't start showing low fuel pressure code which is making me suspicious of the high pressure pump and perhaps it's oil feed.
      If the pump fails do they often cause timing issues?

    Hi Alan, I hope you understand my question. I have noticed on a Ford mk5 in the winter months when the cabin heater is on, after a while, I lose 2dcl of coolant from the system, which is visible in the antifreeze container. What could be causing this? I note that there was no mixing of antifreeze and oil in the container (the antifreeze is "clean") and I did not notice any impurities in the oil.

    Just 2 cents from me, video helped a lot, but it's worth mentioning correct torque values for a cover, it's 5nm pretension and 10Nm final tension, and it's very important to not overdo it. Also .. something I should be aware of, when taking injectors out, you have to replace cooper washers, one of mine is not sealing correctly and smoke is coming out so I have to replace it. Other than that, great stuff.

    • @alan4x
      @alan4x  Год назад

      hi christopher, yes when you remove the injectors on these engines you should keep them in order as they are individually coded to each cylinder.
      if you did mix them up the engine will still run but you could get adverse effects like diesel knock.... you don't need original injectors if you replace the fuel pump

    Terrible cars to work on. It’s like they make these cars to laugh of people who want to fix them. I prefer working on VW rather than this crap, but I’m not a mechanic so I could be wrong. 2 weeks ago a friend of mine broke the teeth on the timing belt and broke all the exhaust rockers.. I replaced all the hydraulic lifters and rockers, timing chain and tensioner and the belt kit. I didn’t take the fuel pump out if you fiddle a bit with the exhaust camshaft it will go out without needing to remove the pump. I also removed the harness from the ecu to the right and didn’t had to remove that many plugs from the front of the engine. Other than that, I guess luckily I didn’t had issue with the injectors not working after replacing, and I did release the chain tensioner before putting the rocker cover on.. i knew that wasn’t a good thing to do and I had to tighten the cover bit by bit just touching on the screws on the correct pattern but it worked out. I left the injector pipes undone and the injectors cables removed, cranked it a few times in order to get diesel up to the injectors then tighten the nuts and it fired up right away. My friend was very happy but I told him not to break that shit anymore because I don’t like fixing fords.

That last for about 2minutes, once the engine warms it soon stops tapping and sounds normal I've ruled out the chain as this seems nice and tight, it's driving me crazy 🤣 and the garage I brought it from tells me it's normal, all I can think is it could be a sticky hydraulic lifter, so that's got me wondering if using a oil Additive would help, everyone who has heard me start my car in the morning or after a day at work notice it straight away 😂 it's a bit of a ongoing joke. Would muchly appreciate any insight if possible.

    When I bought the car 1 year ago it was still under power wich I assumed its due to being just 1.5 engine but nowhere near as bad as it is now!!
    If i put high quality fuel from BP for example the car will get just a little better and it’s noticeable!
    No smoke no warning lights nothing!
    I have a 2017 1.5tdci mondeo aswel wich is pulling like a train and there is a massive difference
    Alan please could you give me a hint to what it could be or something please

    Hi Alan, i am looking at changing my camshafts and this video is very helpful in guiding me through it! But it is honestly the last resort! I purchased the car a few months back and it has a very odd issue with it that i cannot get to the bottom of!
    65 plate Mk5 mondeo 2l TDCI. 150bhp. 146000 miles
    It has a hard start issue.. it could be in the morning or afternoon, if the car has been stood for 7-8 hours or more, it struggles to start. Could take 1 to 4 turns of the key. BUT once it has started. It drives fine. And it will start first time every time after.. albeit a little rough. Until its been stood for a prolonged time (usually overnight) then it struggled again.
    With your expertise have you got any common faults that could cause this? Many thanks in advance..
    i am lost/puzzled with it and been recommended to get a new engine. But i dont want to go down that route just yet.

    Great job except excess of black silicone that can block oil passage and size the engine easy. Anaerobic gasket should be used so camshafts will fit perfectly and no silicone problem. Also sounds like tiny injector knock . Thank you for the time you spent!

    Hi Alan if Im going to replace the seal on the fuel pump, cam belt replaced not long ago, cam chain is ok. Do I have to set timing to top dead centre and then put the pump back in correctly as you showed or just line up the marks you just shown on the pump without timing up top dead centre? Cheers.

  • @Taz6688
    @Taz6688 Год назад

    Timing belt and chain is a pretty big job, would it not be cost effective to change injectors or have them serviced, they came out and it would be an ideal time to service them, or was the mpg very close to normal. I think I have had a car you must have worked on, I have seen loads of sealant oozing on camshaft covers before.

    Hi Alan I have a 2018 mk five Mondeo 1.5 diesel taxi i’m having to change the oil every 2 to 3000 miles as the light flashes for oil change then I realised that I was getting oil, dilution I think from the fuel is the dipstick is going higher and higher. How can I fix this problem? And what is the cause?

    • @FatHead1979
      @FatHead1979 Год назад

      The classic starting point on DPF equipped diesels for this issue is checking whether the DPF is blocked/heavily restricted because a failed regeneration cycle can cause the unburnt fuel to end up in the oil sump.
      You mention the car is a taxi, does it just do short (stop start) urban runs or does it get a regular decent run out e.g. airport runs etc?

    • @goodman8498
      @goodman8498 Год назад

      Most of it is urban city i’m also using Lucas oil stabiliser and I’ve noticed that the temperature of the engine on the dash is 3/4 I’m not on the halfway This is what Lucas does stops the engine from heating up so it says thanks for your reply.
