I’m retired, not a mechanic and not a business owner. But I enjoy working on my own vehicles whenever possible. I love how you teach people about different problems with different vehicles. Things we may have no idea about and hopefully before we have to take it to a shop. It’s amazing how your business has evolved. I’m sure it’s not without great deal of honesty and dignity!👍🏽
I'm currently 16 years old and what you have done here is clearly a reflection of my dream, what you are doing here truly inspires me! I'm currently going to a tech school studying diesel technology and hopefully next year I hope I can get an apprenticeship at a diesel shop.

id like to think after that many years you could build a good starter customer base so you could indeed open you a shop, a good mechanic will always have a job. if your a bumper to bumper tech youll probably be just fine, and especially if you live in a populated area.
Your story is close to my Uncles when he started his Ambulette company. Converting vans to Ambulette's. I'll be sending this link to him and his son. It was a family business. Husband / Wife and Son. I worked for him for 2 summers and I called it a sweat shop. But the best times and stories and more importantly learned how to use tools and machinery. I do believe working hard and always get up when your knocked down. I believe that's the hardest part. Many people give up once they are knocked down a few times. After working hard for many years sells the business and lives well in retirement. The true American Story.
Thanks for sharing Dave. You have a great testimony to God’s faithfulness and the primacy of capitalism. You are an awesome Dad! Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant! ❤
Congratulations Dave, with how you treat customers you deserve it. Please continue to make a great name for great technicians please, some of us just can't win in certain situations
Thank you Dave! Great motivational video! I was 42 when my business partner and I opened our business. Now 8 years later i have similar sentiments. Worked for 3 different companies over 25 years and was scared to death to leave and run our own. Realized i worked harder for myself than i ever did for someone else. My cup runneth over, and I am so grateful for the way God has continued to open doors for me.
@DrRussell it changed my life! I've made mistakes, but the biggest one was letting myself believe i wasn't good enough. I was led to believe i was an average or below average employee, while watching idiots with less experience move up faster. Come to realize I was well respected and needed to stand up more for myself. God works the magic in many ways.
Dave, I watched this video and had to comment. I hope you read this and it gives you some joy. For years I've struggled. And I mean I've STRUGGLED. Post divorce I lost myself. Not to drugs or alcohol, just the inability to know who I was any more. Homelessness. Poverty. Christmas with my kids where the only tree we could afford was sticks hung on the wall with strings and lights and a couple small gifts that I'd gotten from goodwill... No cars. And all that comes with it. My dad built race cars. But I never learned much from him. Somehow my son gained his passion for automotive, and he's truly got an eye for it and the mind. He looked at me once day just under a year ago, while we were living in a tent, and said, "dad, I want to open a shop with you." I knew NOTHING about cars! NOTHING. I once called a valve cover a "head"... Ok. So you have an idea of where I was at. But I decided to put in the work. Got a job at Walmart in the auto Care center and started studying stuff on my own. Then went to Les Schwab working on suspension, brakes, etc. Well, that's ended now. Lost that job for better or worse. And at the same time I traded a car for a truck, made a mistake and found a lot of work that needed done. Work that I couldn't afford. But I kept it running. Then bought an 07 Mercedes e350 for $600 with a bad intake manifold. Supposedly that was all (besides having to replace the sunroof, which was easy enough). Had to fix that, then found a whole string of other issues. Electrical systems, relays, fuses, ground issues, fuel pump failing.... A real mess. Mechanics have misdiagnosed EVERY SINGLE ISSUE I've brought to them this year. Every one. So I've learned, diagnosed, and fixed everything myself. Now friends come to me, family, and others. They ask for help. I give it. I change their oil, maintain their vehicles, diagnose, repair, and service them all. Jeeps, Audi, Hyundai, Honda, Jaguar, etc... All of them. As long as it's minor enough, I do it. I do more than anyone ever asks. If I'm doing brakes, I clean every surface, check runoff, ensure everything is functioning, check all fluids, belts, etc. make sure oil and differential fluids are good, and clean under the hood. They trust me because of what they see when they're done, and because when I'm done, they drive that car more confidently. And here's the point of all this. My good friend just passed. He was an older man with a shop at his house for 30 years doing custom automotive. I was one of two people he allowed in his shop for a year before he passed. And now, having lost my job days ago, I'm terrified. I'm not finding any local shops with a reputation for excellence, who care for their customers genuinely, and care enough to go above and beyond. I will not tolerate second rate service. But, my friend's wife let's me use his shop still. And is open to discussing allowing me to rent it from her to work out of part time so I can go to school and get my certifications and the knowledge I still lack. But... I'm absolutely racked with terror. And then your video... Opposition is an opportunity with options to overcome. And your story. Thank you. I know what I have to do.
“Don’t ever be afraid man, you can do it” is the best advice we all need. I was born in Jackson hole WY in 1989. Started my own business at 31, best leap I ever took. Love this channel, thank you Dave and team
I proudly worked for Goodyear as a mechanic back when I was in my 20's for quite sometime. I am 60 years old now and I wish my boss would have been like Dave, because he really knows his stuff and I probably would have learned a lot from him. I really enjoy Dave's videos because they remind me of some of the things I came across during my time as a mechanic. Thank you Dave. 👍🙏
In life, most good men have a good woman with them. Her being there makes him want to be the best he can be for her, for their family. Many say I am fine on my own, but the truth is you can reach much further with love as your motivation. First rule, SHOW UP, do good work at a fair price, even if you have to take the hit sometimes to make things right. In the long run, you will have enough work that even 30 hr in a day is not enough. This man has let his blessings flow to his work force, in the respect he gives them, the pay and the benefits they receive.
Hearing how the boss lady responded to your decisions and risks is honestly priceless to me. A big struggle to starting my path to success was getting my wife to get on board. I refused to do so unless she was and a few good opportunities passed because of that. Finally, I took the leap. I just did it and then asked for forgiveness. She stuck by my side and said “if this doesn’t work you’re gonna go for a canoe ride without a life jacket.” I see this story everywhere. She’s standing on your ladder to success, and for good reason; sometimes we go out and buy two acres of raw land with no way to develop it. But as we cast out, they reel us in to the right spot. Find a lady that takes care of you. Best advice I’ve ever gotten.
Thanks for sharing Dave. This should be inspiring to a lot of younger folks. Way to take the risk, find success in failure and keep going. You have my admiration.
Hard work is an understatement when you are running your own business. Everything seems to be working against you, so you are rightly proud when you are successful.
Thanks for this Dave. Im 26 years old and trying to start something of my own. Its not going bad but it could always be so much better, and it can get discouraging. You rock man.
Dave thank you for your videos. I am 35 and just recently became the service manager at the 5th oldest Subaru dealership in the country. Your passion and care inspire me. I nearly started my own shop a few years ago, but having moved to a new city I had zero clientele and went back to the dealership world. I treat my work like I own the place, and I love following your content and learning how to create a better experience for my customers and a better, more profitable shop for the owners and my employees

Love it Dave. Been following for a while now. I'm in my 8th going on 9th year of business for my high level detailing. Started in a little garage at my house. Then 4 years ago my wife and I moved across town to a 6 acre property with a 2400sqft morton building on it. I have a 1200sqft ac and heated shop now with a lift and things have been cranking. But like you I was so nervous taking on this project between the increase in our mortgage and spending the money to get the new shop up and going it took a toll. But super glad we did it. I feel you need to be put out of your comfort zone in order to grow.
Dave, I wish I'd known somebody like you back in '85, I had a man who was going to put me in business for the first 4 years and pay everything. But as you know everything was changing over the computer and I was scared. I mean really scared that I would fail so I didn't do it. Now I'm looking back. I could have something like you've got if I just had the courage and the right person to talk to at the time so I know you're going to help a lot of guys that don't want to take that step thank you for paying it forward forward I really think you ought a franchise and several other locations because you'll have to work. Got to see to that. It's just an idea but I think about it. Advise you cuz you you've gone a long ways in 35 years.
You think your business is rocking finally after 30 years, but it’s not!!! It’s just getting started, for you it will be interesting to look back at this video in 5 years and see the progress. But now new chapter, you and your kids (especially miles), are fixing to take it 10x the level it currently is, and to be honest I think within 5 years you will need a shop double the size. All those machines for engine building, etc. yall have so much more coming your way in growth, etc. I feel you got the foundation built and it’s about to explode even more. Especially with miles idea of using social media.
Hi Dave, Now this is an expiring vid. The road you have walked is a true example of belief, passion, commitment and inspiration. The seeds you sowed in your youth have come to pass. You followed HIS leading then and now you are a true witness to this generation. Bless you brother from Western Australia 👍👍
It is your honesty Dave. No matter what you have to be brutally honest. Sometimes it hurts. But you got to do it. It can make you feel like a fool. But it will work out cause you didn't do anything wrong. Than in time your reputation gets known for being honest. That is what makes you money. Being honest means responsable and dependable.
Dave, thank you for sharing your story with us! Your faith in God along with your Christian values helped build your business! A good, honest business is difficult to find these days! I can tell by watching your videos dave you and your team are second to none . Awsome inspirational videos and top notch employees. Amen
I just started following a German couple It’s LR (Land Rover) time. Made me smile as they mention you several times, “what would Dave say”. Good video what a history.
This man is what America is all about you work hard work day and night and you make it love you Dave you’re good at what you do you’re the best still wish you would put one down here in Newnan Georgia, but I know you’re not so if I have any major problems, I guess I’ll have to drive to Centerville, Utahtake care, brother thank you for sharing
Hi Dave, what I find impressive is your boys how they look up to you and you can have a laugh- now thats priceless with this pressure cooker world.😅
Dave, as you know hard work and a little knowledge will always pay off.
What a quality dad you dont work you dont eat. Love it.
I'm currently 16 years old and what you have done here is clearly a reflection of my dream, what you are doing here truly inspires me! I'm currently going to a tech school studying diesel technology and hopefully next year I hope I can get an apprenticeship at a diesel shop.
You can do it!
Dave , I'm 70 years old and still run circles around some young bucks. I'm selling my house in California next year and moving to Farmington. I will look you up for a job.
Thank you for making this video! Very inspiring!
I’m 23 years old, struggling with the economic mess out there, but this is very encouraging! God bless you my good sir!
You CAN do it!
@@nancyk3615 Thank you!
I shuddered a bit when you talked about the hard times, I remember them. You sure had good timing! Way to push through!
Tear
Dave thank you for your inspiration and courage and congratulations on your success and great family.
Congratulations Dave on your success. You & I are self made & have paid for our success dearly through sacrifice & very hard work. I must also congratulate you on your choice for a terrific wife that stood by you through thick & thin. God Bless you Dave, your family, and your crew. TMP from N.J. 🙏
Clean shop, best way to make a 1st impression! Because you never get a second chance to make a 1st impression.
Awesome story, I am a plumber but I enjoy following you.
Awesome! Thank you!
Dave; such an amazing inspirational story, you should write a book, Dave you are the man no doubt.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man as a dealership tech for 5-6 years this makes me hopeful, through school I always wanted to open my own shop
Do it man you have enough skills and knowledge just do it
id like to think after that many years you could build a good starter customer base so you could indeed open you a shop, a good mechanic will always have a job. if your a bumper to bumper tech youll probably be just fine, and especially if you live in a populated area.
First, I found you at the beginning of the year and absolutely love watching. Nice to see how your journey started
You deserve better than that, because you carry magical hands and the long experience 👌🌟
Dave your ability to tell a story and educate the public is above and beyond. You are amazing
Thanks for sharing Dave. You have a great testimony to God’s faithfulness and the primacy of capitalism. You are an awesome Dad! Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant! ❤
My wife and I got married at the courthouse with 2 county workers and a photographer as our witnesses. Wouldn’t have it any other way!
Right on👏👏
Congratulations Dave, with how you treat customers you deserve it.
I was fearful that at 40, it was too late for me to start my own business. Thank you for sharing your story. It inspires me to get going.
He looked at me once day just under a year ago, while we were living in a tent, and said, "dad, I want to open a shop with you."
I knew NOTHING about cars!
She stuck by my side and said “if this doesn’t work you’re gonna go for a canoe ride without a life jacket.”
I see this story everywhere. She’s standing on your ladder to success, and for good reason; sometimes we go out and buy two acres of raw land with no way to develop it. But as we cast out, they reel us in to the right spot.
Find a lady that takes care of you. Best advice I’ve ever gotten.
I just started a new career two weeks ago and my training is over. I get thrown to the wolves Saturday and this has inspired me further!
Thanks for sharing Dave. This should be inspiring to a lot of younger folks. Way to take the risk, find success in failure and keep going. You have my admiration.
Dave you are SUCH an inspiration. I’ve always dreamed of owning a shop like yours. That and a happy family is literally all I want out of this life
Hard work is an understatement when you are running your own business. Everything seems to be working against you, so you are rightly proud when you are successful.
Congratulations Dave on your Mega journey.
Golden words of advice from a wise man. Young bloods, heed this council and learn from those Giants whose shoulders you may be honored to stand on someday
You're a hero to all of us Dave! As a tech, I'd say you've changed the way I see the industry, and my life! You're the man, I look forward to all of your videos. I really can't tell ya.

Dave’s advice applies to life … not just mechanics. Thanks Dave … you’re one of the greats
Your passion for your work is obviously always present and out front. The real amazing thing is your passion for sharing your life lessons and formula for your success. Most successful ppl are too busy working toward the next goal to find time to share anything. Its your passing for sharing that seems to be the next level for you, and it's amazing to watch this journey.
I do love a grass roots success story. So glad I found your channel Dave. All the best to your family, your employees and your business.
I’m inspired this really hit home for me I myself am turning 30 this year with 2 children of my own been a diesel mechanic for 10 years and have been telling myself for years I want to go out on my own this video has definitely lit a fire under me
Dave thank you for sharing I’m in my 1st shop been here for 3 years no running water or a bathroom I have to use a spicket on the back side of the house on the property I’ve been mostly word of mouth specializing in Subarus I’m at the point now that I want to move and find a property with a house and a shop on it to work from home I’m looking for someone who will carry a loan since I don’t have much credit because I pay everything cash I did buy a new truck to help build my credit and it was nice to have a newer Cummins in still thinking about keeping old reliable my 2nd gen. I use my trucks to tow vehicles I purchase to repair and resale and that’s how I’ve been building my clients. Thank you again
Dave is an amazing human being with an amazing family. I love your videos. And Your crew at Dave’s auto!!
Can't tell you how much I enjoy your posts. Keep up the good work and your posts!
You guys are an inspiration to a 20 year mechanic. Thanks for all you do.
Our pleasure!
Hey again Dave. Watching you from Canada 🇨🇦. At the age of 76 and retired from the industry, you still inspire me. Love you, brother. Blessings to you and your wonderful family.🙏
Very inspirational. Loved meeting your wife in this video! You have a great one, hold her close. There’s no way you would’ve been able to pull this off without her!
It’s amazing what hard work can pay off
You took a big step and it paid off for you
I started my first business with just my hand tools had to buy all my equipment one piece at a time... My second business it was a little bit better but still started with nothing... Just started another business about 6 months ago and pretty much.
Starting with nothing, But a dream... My grandparents were entrepreneurs and they taught me the same values. If you don't work, you don't Eat...
Man the 90's were just the perfect time to start a business. Hope I can make something of my own and not always have to work under someone else.
Living the American dream! God bless dave
13:55 i will be keeping that quote in mind, thats definitely very powerful thank you
Great story. Better advice. Small business owner makes good. Quality and hard work. An American story.
I can’t believe it! My dad says the exact same thing “you don’t work you don’t eat” and I whole heartedly believe in that saying. I admire your dedication and determination Dave. Appreciate you showing your history 👍🏻
Dave I find you video great info I love to help people as well I am a car dealer in New Jersey. I have two bays. Tackling brakes and simple stuff with my son. I am 53 and started back up 2015. I enjoy your videos. I will love to get into the auto repair field or just service what I sell.
This is such a powerful video for me... I can't tell you too much about why, but you hit the nail on the head when you talk about fear. It can gab hold of you so tight. Only now in my later years am I starting to feel more confident and brave about starting my own business. Thank you for doing this. You're truly a good man.
Thank you for the inspiration ❤! I need to come see you guys about a solid lifter conversion on my 21 hd ram !
Getting fired with a new baby 2 days married, thats prett low, but you can look back now and smile!
its that sort of event that drives someone (like Dave did) to say "I'm going to work for myself" going forward
As they say one door closes 1 door opens but that second door had a long a** hallway
I didn't think much of you till you talked about your faith and journey... now I think very highly of you mate
Awesome and inspiring story Dave!
I enjoyed this walk back in time of how you got started. Peace be with you

Greetings from France Dave. You are more than business inspiration, you are hapiness inspiration. As an entrepreneur, I know having a stable and happy family life is the first big step to be fully succesful.
I will visit your shop whenever traveling to the US.
Great story Dave. Im sure along the way you have inspired many people, and to me that's one of the greatest measures of success. Our stories are very similar. God bless you and your family and may you continue to prosper and inspire the ones coming up behind us. Peace, blessings, and respect.!👍🏼🙏🏼
Hats off to you and your family. I’m impressed on have far you have come. I’m also impressed how you have turned over business operations to your son’s. A former Employer of mine has turned over his business operations to his son. They are doing very well. Thanks for posting. I love your videos and the way you involve your family.
Agreed. Business owners are a rare breed who can do that. Good to hear your story 👍
Thank you for your story. Truly a inspiration for us all.
Thanks for listening
I could tell by the way that dude was waddling that he was gonna give you some shit lmao
😂
That's a very enlightening story Dave and proud of you. I can tell the first episode I watched that you knew what you were doing.
Hats off to you Dave, you're one hard working SOB!!
This guy worked his ass off to get where he’s at. The fact of the matter is anyone can do it. Only smart people watch Dave’s channel.
You're one in a million! I also enjoy how you encourage & teach young people getting into the business on how to do it right! Keep up the faith and keep fighting the good fight!
Grateful for that bit of wisdom: "Opposition is an opportunity with options to overcome." The stuff you upload, man, it's a great encouragement to me, a 12 year tech with hopes of his own shop one day.
Cheering you on
That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your life’s journey. It is a reality check when you are the sole breadwinner for the family and you lose your job.
Been there, done that. Proud, very proud of where you are now versus where you came from.
